My name is Kim
Cruse. I'm 30 years old.

I'm from Woodville, Texas.

Woodville is a super
small country town.

We have three stoplights,

and they're literally
not even a mile apart.

I grew up singing and playing
music with my whole family.

My dad's a pastor.

I can recall the first time
she ever sung in the church.

She was about 3 years old.

She stepped up
to the mic fearless,

as if she'd been
doing it her whole life.

And after I heard that, I said,

"This girl going somewhere,"
you know?

One day, I was on my lunch break

at McDonald's, in
the drive-through.

And I just posted the
video of me singing

this song called "Jesus."

A viral music page shared it,

and it got up to like
1.5 million views.

And I was just, like, crying.

It literally just
happened overnight.

From there, I was one of
Monica's background singers,

and then I had the
opportunity to sing

with a gospel group in Germany.

Since COVID, I've
been my own manager.

I respond to my own bookings.

I do everything by myself.

So, I need "The Voice"

so I can take my
career to the next level.

The amount of talent that
God poured on you, it's insane.

voices a little bit separate.

Each one was very good,
but they didn't flow for me,

My dad plays the drums. Uh-huh.

And when I grew up,
he was playing in bands.

I did not take
interest in the drums.

We had a drum kit
in our house, too.

My dad played, and my
brother took the drums

I do open mics. Mm-hmm.

I was actually in
a band last year.

I did that.

I do write my own stuff. I started
writing when I was probably 12.

That stuff will never see
the light of day, for sure.

and all that kind of stuff.

I think all of those
things help you become

a better storyteller
as a vocalist.

And so much of what
we're looking for here

is more than just

you're 16 and doing that,

first-generation American.

My mom's from Peru,
and my dad's from Mexico.

They both came
with their families

at a very young age
for more opportunities

and to establish a life
for themselves here.

Growing up, I learned Spanish
before I learned English.

I'm very in touch
with my culture,

and it's a big part
of who I am today.

My parents have always
been extremely supportive.

Once I let the tears pass.

What they've instilled in
me is resilience, persistence,

and to always do the
best you possibly can,

not just in singing and
performing, but in life.

I see it in them. Like,
they're such hard workers.

I look up to them

For example,

traditional flamenco songs

and then she came

which was flamenco mixed

with these hip-hop,
rhythmic beats,

and that is what set her
apart and made her Rosalía.

And you can show that
in your cover choices.

You have a lot of potential,

and I'm really proud of
you for representing us.

My mom is also a teacher,
and she encouraged me to go out

for every solo at school,
every talent competition,

and she really supported
me with my music.

"Dad is going to the hospital.

We believe he has COVID."

They put him in an induced
coma, and he passed away.

I just remember yelling out,
"I didn't get to say goodbye."

It just felt like I've been
punched in my stomach,

and I'm gasping for air.

I'm grateful that I get
to carry on his legacy.

And doing this, I'm
able to do something

that I know my dad would be
so proud and so happy about.

relate to this story

is the power and the

I've had to overcome depression

I've always loved singing.

And when I was 15,

I started taking voice
lessons and I learned guitar.

My grandparents were

and working on kind
of getting that deep end

of my voice rounded out.
