someone my age to

What I try and do is I kind of
modernize it for people my age.

I got introduced to music
about 2 1/2 years ago.

My grandpa... I saw
he had an old guitar.

I remember he picked it
up, and he started playing.

I look over, and I
just see my grandma

just crying, just totally moved.

I knew, like, in that moment,
like, that's what I'm gonna do.

I started learning
Hank Williams,

Elvis, Johnny Cash.

I kind of try and
pick and choose

the good parts of
each one of their voices

that I like and try to make
my own sound out of it.

When I'm not doing
music, I'm with my dad.

We do our own screen
printing and embroidery.

We put basically
anybody's logo on anything.

Starting it up.

It's fun to have him
out there working with me.

He brings joy and
excitement to it,

and it's... it's fun just
to hang out with my kid.

The first time that I heard him

up a daddy's girl.

The way this man

simply watching TV,

and out of nowhere, I
would get a kiss attack.

March of 2021, he passed
away due to COVID.

He used to always tell me,

He knew I was
ready to finally soar

and really show the world,
like, what I was meant to do.

As soon as I got the call
that I was gonna be here,

like, it was hard not being
able to get him on the phone.

because I was

The genre that I play...

I grew up listening to a lot of
rock, Green Day and Incubus,

to the crooner stuff,

like the Sinatra and
the Nat King Cole,

then mix that in with,

and then you've got... like
California country, maybe?

When I moved from San
Diego to Los Angeles,

I got a pretty harsh dose of
reality, 'cause you move there

and you think that
someone's gonna be like,

"Hey, do you want
a record contract?"

And you'd be like,
"That's so crazy.

Actually, that's why I'm here."

And that is not how it works.

In more recent years,
I'm now a teacher,

and that sort of
funds music for me.

It's definitely hard doing both,

because any teacher
will tell you that it's

more than a full-time
job in and of itself.

When I went into teaching,
I had kind of given up on

being able to do
music full-time,

but I don't think
that dream can...

Once it's inside you,

I don't think it
ever really dies.

"The Voice" is a once
in a lifetime opportunity.

think this season's gonna be

like no other season
because it's so young.

Seems like our young talent
this season has been exceptional,

better than they've
ever been before.

that are coming from

uploading their

This generation has had less
live performance experience.

That's very true.

They need the

them get that. It's true.

is something I'd never
bargained for or expected.

This is the American
dream for my family, for sure.

I'm first-generation
Muslim American.

My family moved here
to escape war in Lebanon

and find new opportunity.

I'm very proud of
my Lebanese culture.

My faith is incredibly
important to me.

It's something that
has guided just the way

that I try to treat people,

and it's synonymous
with goodness for me.

There is a wide history in
my family of musical people.

Dad and his brother used
to have a band in college,

and that was actually what
introduced me to music.

One day, out of nowhere, he
got me like a cheap starter guitar.

Coming from an
immigrant background,

all my parents knew
is that you work hard.

That's your mom

a couple years
before you were born.

When you decide you're
going to become a musician,

nothing can really sway you,
and so there's this mutual respect

I think I now have
with my parents

where they see that
commitment that I have

to this career.

I admire him just because

he fought so hard
for his passion.

That's what makes
me proud of him.

I'm in a band called
Latchkey Kids,

and we play alternative music

somewhere between a little
bit of Americana and punk rock.

We played 200, 250
shows this past year.
