"Bruises" by Lewis Capaldi.

I'm adopted, and so, like,

the emotion behind the song
kind of connects

with the proverbial "bruises"
that are left behind

from feeling, you know,
those questions.

Samuel: I struggled with
a sense of self‐worth,

so I reached out to my birth mom
in hopes to find some answers.

Something that I found out
was how I came to be.

It was nothing like
I had imagined,

and to understand now
that my adoption was not

a position of
"I don't want you,"

it was out of sacrifice.

"This is what
I need to do to give you

the life that you deserve."
So, that was a big realization.

Ed: What I loved about
Samuel's voice

was the rasp he gets.

I love when people can get
a bit of grit behind it.

I do feel that your connection
with this song is deeper

than just you liking it.

I love it when, in the chorus,
it goes gruff.

And I think there's
tiny bits in the verses

sometimes where you force it
just a little bit,

but I think keep
the verses chilled,

and then when it gets to
the chorus, it explodes.

The question is, are you able
to deploy it selectively?

It's inherently got, like,
pain built into it.
