this show is it's based upon a voice,

and now more than ever,

music is so key to help
bring everybody back together.

I love that this group
of coaches are back together.

There's just something
about this combination



that really works well.

I took a season off,
but I'm back

and I can't wait to get out
there

and find the next big artist.

I'm 30 years old,
and I'm from Bowie, Maryland.

my gosh. This is really happening!

My childhood was
incredibly colorful.

My family is all Caribbean.
I wasn't really aware

that everybody's household
wasn't like mine. Ha!

Can you imagine being,
like, in the 3rd grade,

pulling out a lunchbox
with curried chicken

and rice and peas? Like

um, not cool.

Picture it... Jamaica, 1970.

My grandmother heard

that she could get a better
life coming to America.

She was willing to give
up everything to create a life

for my mom and aunt.

It's been hard being
away from my family.

I wish they could
be here with me.

But, you know,
this is the circumstance we're in.

Hi! Hey, girl! Hey!

How are you?

How are you? Y'all look pretty.

My mom is a musician,
so our childhood

was just filled with music.

Tamara gets her voice from
Mom. And I got mine from her.

2016,
I packed it up and moved to New York.

New York was good to me, honey.

Within three months,
I was able to do shows at the Apollo,

to do some off-Broadway shows.

Last year I performed
on the VMAs with Lizzo.

This was my year. I was touring.

I had seen six countries
by the beginning of March,

and then everything stopped.

When this pandemic happened,

I had to just sit still and say,
like, "Okay, God.

What we doing?"

So it means the
world to be here.

It's really beautiful to see
my grandmother's vision

come full circle.

this a long time,

and I'm always gonna
be honest with you

because I want to see
you go as far as you can go.

And I, in my heart,

First of all,
the fact that you can rap sing,

the fact that you can sing these big,
soulful notes,

and then what sealed the deal
was the very end of the song,

where you kind of sang it more
gracefully and more tenderly.

she can do literally everything."

My dad is a farmer,
and he has been his whole life.

He grows sugar beets,
corn, beans,

Living rural has kind
of its pros and cons.

It gives me a lot of time
to focus on my music

without having to worry
about neighbors hearing me.

My parents always made
sure that I had social outlets.

My mom found the
School of Rock in Aurora.

It was a long drive,

60 miles one way,
3 or 4 times a week.

That's where I
learned to sing rock.

I started doing open mics,
some songwriting competitions.

I started to find my
voice as an artist.

I've always wanted to
try out for "The Voice."

I've watched since I was little,

and so I think it'd be
an amazing opportunity.

point of view as a singer,

and that's crazy if you were 32,

but the fact that
you're able to do it

Onstage, I go by "Joseph Soul."

This is the beach right across
the street from my house.

I am originally
from a tiny little town

on the island of Maui.

It's called Hana. We live very,
very simply.

We don't have electricity.

That's probably why music
was so important.

Thankfully,
I had that ukulele from my auntie,

so I'd just be playing it all day,
every day.

This is where I'm from.

Outside of that,
you kind of have to get creative.

You can surf,
or you can go spearfishing.

Sometimes we'll
all line up in a row

and we'll jump off into
the ocean like dominoes.

I started deejaying
at 12 years old,

and I'm deejaying parties.

You got this little
kid over there,

trying to make everybody dance,

It was fascinating.

I've deejayed
all over the world.

I had a residency in Las Vegas,
and I won two deejay battles,

but singing was always
something that was a part of my life.

Deejaying just paid the bills.

So I've been pushing for
my solo career as an artist

probably the last six years.

I got a long way to go,
but I feel like I've come a long way, too.

To step on this stage,

it's probably the biggest thing
to ever happen to my career.

I'm so proud to represent
the Polynesian culture.

It was scary to
leave the island,

I'm Ian Flanigan,
I'm 30 years old,

and I live in a motor
home with my family.

Alright. And I'll
crack eggs. Whoo!

I love being from New York,
I love living in New York,

but the winters here are
pretty long and pretty cold.

So since last year,
we set out to get out of the snow,

and we wanted to find
as many gigs as we could.

We find the most beautiful spots

we can in this country
to park the R.V.,

and then I go out to
different shows in that state.

That's how we've been
living for the last eight months

with our daughter,
and we're just homeschooling her.

There's a lot of driving.

An average day could be
between 6 and 11 hours.

Pros of living in an R.V....

You can go anywhere
your heart desires.

You can also spend a
ton of time with your family.

I gotta go to the
bathroom! A con is definitely

having one bathroom.

Can't get any privacy.

So, the pandemic came,

and it basically just
put all tours to a halt.

At the moment,
I want to show my daughter

how to just never give up. Yay!

"The Voice" is
really a chance for us

to prove what we're
doing is worth it.

It's very hard to be
away from my family.

I'm missing them pretty bad,

but I know that they're doing good,

and now living in Bakersfield,

I'm a third-generation pastor,

but when we were growing up,
we lived on the road.

My parents would go
from church to church,

all across pretty
much the southern part

of the United States.

From a young age,
I was onstage with them.

They'd march me and
my little brother out there,

and my mom would lean over
and she'd whisper the words

in our ears so that
we wouldn't forget

as we're singing our little song,
you know?

We want to celebrate with you.

And I became a campus
pastor five years ago.

My wife, too... I mean,
she developed into an unbelievable pastor,

and now she pretty
much runs the show.

Me and my wife were
born in the same hospital,

delivered by the same doctor,
about a week and a half apart.

Back in Arkansas,
my mom and her mom were best friends.

They grew up back door to each other,
basically, you know?

He moved out to Bakersfield

when he was 18 months old.

But when I was a
freshman in college,

my mom wanted to send me
out to California for spring break,

and he came and picked
me up from the airport.

When she comes
walking off the plane,

I was just like..."Dude!"

And we were married
that following June.

It's a very redneck version
of an arranged marriage.

From day one,
she's been the biggest supporter

when it comes to music.

She's just constantly
putting people above herself

and, uh

I've spent
half my life with this woman,

town in South Carolina

called Hartsville,

and I am 34 years old.

My parents divorced when I was young,

took custody of me
and my two sisters.

I was the only guy in the house.

I did watch a
lot of chick flicks.

I first started playing
music around 13.

14 is when I got my first band.

I've been doing
music for 20 years,

and it got me through
the ups and downs of life.

It was everything.

This has been a hard
year for my whole family,

small-cell stage IV
lung cancer to brain.

And, uh from what the doctors have said,

that's the cancer that's
not curable.

She's still going
through immunotherapy,

was a whole thing.

When I was 2 years old, I'd be,
like, touching the piano...

Just, like, wanted to play.

It was always piano,

Two to four hours a day,
practice,

go to school,
practice. That was my life.

When I was 19, I applied for
Belmont University in Nashville

and decided to move down there.

When I left Staten Island,
it was almost like a culture shock.

I was just like,
"Wow. Nobody does anything

the way I was growing up.
Are you kidding?" You know?

But at 21,
I realized that I wasn't totally straight.

I like girls, love girls,
love women.

I wanted to come
clean with my parents.

Like, I wear everything right here,
you know,

but they just did
not take it well.

So I was forced to go to
these religious morality classes

that made me feel like
I was being converted

into not being gay.

They made me feel
like I had to hate myself.

So I did for the longest time.

It's not what I thought
I wanted for my child.

I sat down with my mom and dad.

My dad says in
his Italian accent...

"Cat, my God. It's okay."

"She's born this way."

And then my mother chimes in,
and she goes, "It's okay.

Every family has one."

That's so Grandma.

I love her, and there is nothing
worth losing your child over.

Accept them for who they are.

Because I started to love
myself and accept myself,

I started going to the
gay clubs in the Village.

I started to really blossom.

My father came every
Wednesday night to the gay bar.

All the drag queens...
They all had a crush on Dad.

I was really bullied growing
up because I had a high voice,

But I'm lucky to have my grandmother,

in my life.

She has
been my biggest cheerleader.

On my 25th birthday,
I said, "Big Mama,"

"I have something to tell you. I'm gay."

"There is nothing in this world

make me love you any less

I wish that kind of
love for everybody

because it allowed me to
be myself without apology.

It freed me,
and it allowed me to soar.

I'm known as an opera singer,
but I love jazz. I love gospel.

over in a big way.

that looks like me doing it,
not in the mainstream.
