The Voice (2011–…): Season 17, Episode 13 - The Knockouts, Part 3 - full transcript

All right, guys, let's talk
about the knockouts.

Okay.
How do you think
it's going so far?

I'm feeling good.
I feel like

I've seen a lot of people
come to life.

Yeah.
In the knockouts, your artists
are picking their songs.

Yeah.
Yeah.

How do you feel about
when they pick their songs?

It's kind of cool when they play
a song that you don't expect.

You know what I'm saying?
And you're like, "What?"

Gwen: You want to know
something, though, guys?

You guys haven't heard Rose yet.
Ooh.

Oh, Rose is really good.
I love Rose.

It's kind of crazy.

Gwen: Well, I have
the most incredible team,

who's literally gonna lose
their minds...

Oh, really?
...as soon as they see you.

Man.
Like, they don't
know you're here.

Oh, my God, they're gonna die.
Okay. I don't know what to do.

How do I stand?
Just like this?

[ Laughs ]

All right, well, let's, uh,
bring 'em out.

Gwen: Destiny and Rose are
my two big powerhouse singers,

and I paired them together
because I really need just one

to fulfill that kind of lane.

[ Screams ]
I knew it!

Oh, my God!
I knew it!

Hello!
I don't know why

I felt like it was gonna be her.

She was looking good.
She had that bad suit on, honey.

I hugged her, felt like money.

It was just amazing.

I'm speechless.
Look, this is --

It's a nail-off.
Look at this.

I know!
My nails is messed up,
but Imma do this thing.

This is great. No, it's not.
It's good.

You're not just saying yes.
It's good.

Taylor Swift is one of the most
incredible songwriters

of modern times.
Yes!

You know how to make
catchy songs

that don't get out of
your brain.

Yes.
Thank you.

Oh, my God.
Okay, so, Destiny --

I stole her from John Legend.
You just went...

But I had to fight Blake.
..."Mine now."

And I -- Wait,
did you get that on film?

I fought Blake,
and I won Destiny.

The winner of this battle
is Katie.

Katie, congratulations!

I was sad that I left
Team Legend.

Right as I'm about to walk out,
Gwen and Blake

hit their buttons,
and I just screamed.

Like, I was just so happy.

I don't want to fight
with my girlfriend.

[ Laughter ]
But I'm willing to for you.

-Whoa!
-Not only did Gwen turn

her chair for me in the blinds,

but she hit her steal.

In that moment, I'm like,
"She really is pursuing me."

I pick Gwen.
Yay!

Gwen's pop, and that's the route
I want to go.

And I'm beyond excited to be
on her team now.

The song I'm doing is "Tell Me
You Love Me" by Demi Lovato.

I feel like this song represents
the style of music I like to do.

You're a Nashville girl, right?
I am!

And you're a songwriter
in Nashville, too.

Yeah.
I always wonder how people write

those kind of songs
because it's so many runs.

I don't really do vocal runs.
So I have no idea.
Yeah.

[ Laughs ]
Me, neither.

That's why we're, like,
looking at you.

She's like, "Few times
I've been around!"

[ Laughter ]
Bananas!

We're like, "Actually, tell us."
We would like to know.

[ Laughs ]
Show us how it's done.

Thanks.
[ Laughs ]

? Oh, no, here we go again ?

I feel like I can connect to
this song

because it's a song of
vulnerability.

When I moved to Nashville,
I met with some record labels,

thought that
I was gonna be signed,

and then the doors closed.

And it can really
make you think that,

"Maybe I'm not good enough."

So I'm definitely gonna use
my own experiences

to really share my heart
behind the song.

? All right, yeah ?

Wow!
Wow! You're a good singer!

I think Destiny
has so much access

to so much greatness
in her voice.

You could kind of start at more
of, like, a gentle approach.

Okay.
And then you could escalate it

so that people are, like,
clutching their heart.
Okay.

It can be easy to belt your way

through a number
if you feel like,

"Okay, I'm in a vocal
competition," but I think

it's about delving into
the emotional side of it.

? Is standing
right in front of me ?

? I know that we will be ?

? All right, all right, yeah ?

Yeah!
[ Screams ]

Wow!
That was great!

It was like,
"Ah, we told you that,"

and then all of a sudden,
you're awesome.

The dynamics, dude!
Yes!

That was so good!
Thank you, guys!

Thank you
for telling me that.

To be able to take direction
is so important.

I went in
with Dr. Dre, right?

Yeah.
And I was terrified.

I learned so much
by trying it

the way he was trying to
make me do it.

Yeah.
But being able to execute that

is a really huge thing.

Gwen: She took the song
to a whole nother level,

so I think Destiny
has a really good shot

of going somewhere on this show.

Your rings are good.

Thank you.
I love.

No way.
This was my sapphire,

We have matching this,
too.
And that's -- Those are...

Hey.
Do you want to look at her rings
with us?

I've been staring at this lady
every time I see her.

I don't want her to think
I'm being weird.

What did I tell you?

So, she was trying to be
insecure.

I don't even need to try.

[ Laughter ]
I got that down.

From the beginning, I didn't
think you would turn for me.

[ Cheers and applause ]

Gwen: This is
an amazing crash course,

and I know that I can help you
find your personality.

I was taking everything
that you say.

And you did it. Just the way
she walked on the stage

out of the battles,

people were falling
in love with her.

But, you know, I couldn't move
'cause I had Spanx on, girl.

I was sucked-and-tucked.
[ Laughs ]

That was great.
Nothing's ever gonna be perfect,

especially in
a live performance.

I got stuck
in an elevator lift

and just had to talk
for a long time.

[ Laughter ]

You learn ways
to get out of situations

that look like a mistake.
Yeah.

And it sounds like you've
already got that down,

which is amazing.
Yeah. Yeah.

I'm so excited
to see you perform.

Yeah. Let's do it.
So act like we're not here.

Oh, okay.
[ Laughs ]

? Sitting in
a big white room alone ?

The song I picked was
"Big White Room" by Jessie J.

? Feel the tears ?

I am a songwriter.

I've written scores for plays,

write my own music,

and this song was my life
working at the prison.

? I don't wanna
be here anymore ?

I would wonder, "Is this it?"

but I would always say that
this can't be it.

? In this big white room ?

Taylor: With Rose,
I was watching her,

and I didn't quite know
what to do with my face.

? I'm going crazy ?

She's got such a magnetism,
as well as having the kind of

voice that makes you just go,
"What?!"

? Big white room of ?

[ Laughs ]
Oh, my God!

I'm crying.

I love you.

That was so incredible.

Taylor: Phenomenal.
Are you kidding me?

It was emotional
and perfect,

except I would just want
to see your eyes.

That's it.
Mm-hmm.

Because it's a song
about isolation...
Yeah.

...and loneliness, I would agree
that maybe opening up your eyes

earlier than you did,
but, oh, my God, your
taste is incredible.

Y'all are freaking superstars.
What is you saying?

Knowing what I had to sacrifice
to be here,

and to have those two
say those things about me...

it means the world.

Y'all are so real. Like, I loved
you even more when I met you.

I've got body makeup
on my entire body right now.

I know! Listen!
I mean, it is what it is!

I got lashes on.
I mean, I got a whole wig on.

It's understood. But I'm
talking about your heart.

Aww, I love you.
Like, I just --

I fell in love
with this lady.

And look at you, girl.
Like, I can't.

Thank y'all so much.
Seriously.

Gwen, I love you.
That was -- That was phenomenal.

This is gonna be
a really hard decision.

You know, they're both
phenomenal singers.

This is some serious girl talent
right there. My gosh.

I don't want to lose
any of my team.

I just really have to follow
my heart, like, in the moment.

Yeah, I guess you're gonna
just have to see

what happens
in the ring.

[ Cheers and applause ]

Come on, Rose!

All right, Rose!

Now singing "Big White Room,"
here is Rose Short.

???

? Sitting in
a big white room alone ?

? Tilt my head back ?

? Feel the tears fall down ?

? I don't wanna be here
anymore ?

? Wanna be somewhere else ?

? Normal and free ?

? Like I used to be ?

? But I got to stay
in this big white room ?

? With little old me ?

[ Cheers and applause ]
All right, Rose!

? Everybody's looking at me ?

? Everybody's staring at me ?

? Yeah, yeah ?

? What do I do now? ?

? What do I do now? ?

? Do I just smile? ?

[ Cheers and applause ]

? I'm going crazy, yeah ?

? I'm losing my mind ?

? I'm going crazy ?

? In this big white room
of mine ?

? I'm going crazy ?

Yes!

? I'm losing my mind ?

? In this big white room ?

? Big white room of ?

? Mine ?

[ Cheers and applause ]

All right.

Wow!

Yeah.

With "Tell Me You Love Me,"
here is Destiny Rayne.

???

? Oh, no, here we go again ?

? Starting over what I said ?

? I'm sorry ?

? Yeah, I'm sorry ?

? And all my friends,
they know, and it's true ?

? I don't know who I am
without you ?

? I got it bad, baby ?

? Got it bad ?

? Tell me you love me ?

? I need someone ?

? On days like this, I do ?

? On days like this ?

? Oh, tell me you love me ?

? I need someone ?

? On days like this, I do ?

? On days like this ?

? Can you hear my heart say? ?

? I need someone ?

? Yeah, yeah ?

? On days like this, I do ?

? Hey, on days like this ?

? Oh, can you hear
my heart say? ?

? Everything I need ?

? Oh, oh ?

? Is standing right
in front of me ?

? Oh, oh ?
? I know that we will be ?

? All right, all right ?

? Yeah ?

[ Cheers and applause ]

Whoo!

Wow!

Oh, my gosh.

Man! Destiny and Rose bringing
the diva vocals.

I love it.

Destiny, Demi has a big voice,
a big range,

and that was really smart
to show that off.

It's actually
quite impressive,

just the feeling and the vibe
of that broken-down section.

It let me know who you are
as an artist

more than any other part
of that song.

And, Rose, you are
an impressive singer.

-Thank you.
-There are certain people that

walk in and have a presence
not only vocally,

but just your spirit
and your vibe.

It was really great.
I'd probably go with Rose,

although, Destiny,
you killed it.

You did.
Thank you. Thank you.

Thank you.
[ Cheers and applause ]

Hey, Destiny, I've always
thought you were a great singer.

But I feel like today,
that song,

it felt like it had the best
of you in the higher register.

And, Rose,
I couldn't be happier

for you that you have Gwen
as your coach.

Because I've had Gwen
as my best friend,

and I can see the effect
that it has on somebody,

the way she helps you
to believe in yourself.

Hands down, that's been
my favorite performance

of the knockout rounds
so far.

I thought
that was brilliant.

[ Cheers and applause ]

I guess
I'm gonna cry over here.

-That was beautiful.
-Yeah.

-That was very sweet.
-That was so sweet.

My God. Whew!

This man actually has a hear.

[ Laughter ]

Destiny, I loved
working with you.

You just attacked this song
with power and charisma,

and I thought it was really
a strong performance.

But your challenge, of course,
was going against Rose.

And, Rose, your notes were just
gorgeous and clear

and, oh, they made us all
feel something.

It was phenomenal.
Thank you.

Thank you, Coaches.

All right, Gwen,
it all comes down to you.

Before we find out the winner,

give us your thoughts
on the performances.

Destiny,
you did an amazing job.

But you're trying to do such
a great job singing

that maybe you're just losing
who you are a little bit.

But that's all I would say.

Rose, to choose a song that has
the lyric that really reflects

where you are right now,
I think,

is what really came across.

That just made it moving for me,
as well.

Daly: Gwen, it's time.

Who is the winner of
this knockout?

Well, I'm just so proud that I
got to work with both you guys.

But right now, I have to choose,
and I'm gonna have to say...

???

...Rose,
you won the knockout.

Congratulations!

Rose is a two-chair turn that
turned into a major threat,

and everybody is definitely
scared of Rose.

This is so magic.
It's so magic!

I've made it
to the live playoff, hey!

They let a real one
on the TV, hey!

Destiny, anything you want to
say to Gwen?

Gwen, thank you so much
for picking me twice

and for everything
you've poured into me.
Thank you so much.

Thank you.
Thank you.

Give it up for Destiny Rayne,
ladies and gentlemen!

Thank you!
Bye, guys!

Rose.
That was controlled.

That was gorgeous.
I loved that.

She made it about the song
and not about her voice.

That was beautiful.
Daly: Still to come...

? In case you didn't know ?

Daly: ...with Blake and John's
steals in play...

? Oh, kiss me ?

Daly: ...the fight to advance
to the live playoffs

leads to
emotional decisions.
Whoo!

It's moving me to tears.

It's just rapturous.
It's beautiful.

Carson,
why are you crying?

I-I'm not.

I'm just kidding.
It's me.

Blake, please, say something.

You're screwed.
How's that sound?

Daly: That's the sound
of a steal!
Yes!

? This is "The Voice" ?

Daly:
Welcome back to the knockouts.

Man: 30 seconds out.

Everybody's good now.

Every single one of my people is
steal-worthy, I-I swear to God.

All eight of them were.

I still have my steal left,
and I'm very much

looking forward to the rest
of the knockouts

to see the rest
of the great talent.

Going head-to-head from
Team Kelly,

it's Kiara Brown...

Kelly: I love the knockouts
because it brings up

everyone's "A" game.

Daly: ...versus Shane Q!

Kelly: But it is the hardest
thing, to watch such talented

and gifted singers go home,

especially having been one of
those artists previously.

???

You're one of those people
that really, genuinely care.

It means a lot.
I feel the same way
about you.

Like, I can tell how much you
care about their performances

and them as people and...
Yes.

...you know?
So, next up, we have Shane,

and we have Kiara.

Kiara,
I stole from Team Gwen.

? I want to give you
some love ?

Kiara, I should have turned
for you in the blinds.

You shocked me.
Kiara: For my battle,
I did think

I was going home because I lost.

Kiara is available to steal
or save.

Kelly stealing me, I didn't
really have words for it.

I was really grateful
and blown away.

Like, I did not expect it
at all.

So, I'm gonna go with Kelly.
Yeah!

She is somebody that I've looked
up to vocally my entire life,

so to get stolen by her,
it was just such a crazy moment.

Kiara
has a heart of gold --

sweetest human ever,
sweetest voice.

Shane is --
I mean, you'll just hear Shane.

Awesome.
Like, it's like,
"Where did you get your voice?"

My God.
Aah! What's up, y'all?

Taylor Swift is here.

Aah!
Hi, guys.

I'm freaking.
Shane Q: I did not expect
to meet Taylor Swift.

I was scared to look at her.
That's how amazing it was.

It is incredibly intimidating

to just meet somebody
at that caliber.

So, what song did you pick?
"The Bones"
by Maren Morris.

That song is amazing.
I love Maren.

Me too. I met her.
It was really cool.

Yeah?
I won
this songwriting contest

and got mentored by her
a little bit, so...

That's crazy.
That's so cool.

Aspiring singer-songwriter
Kiara Brown.

This spring, she was picked
from hundreds to be mentored

by Maren Morris.

You got, like,
so much soul in you.

Oh, thank you so much.

That was a crazy experience.

And now, the fact that

Taylor Swift and Kelly Clarkson
are willing to help me

develop as an artist,
that's amazing.

? When the bones are good,
the rest don't matter ?

Kelly: To be able
to full-circle it and perform

"The Bones" by Maren Morris,
'cause she's inspired by her,

is really cool because
that's what Kiara is.

She's a singer-songwriter.

Kiara: ? Ain't a crack in
the foundation ?

I love this song, and she did
an amazing interpretation of it.

She's also just, like, a really
warm, lovely, sunny person.

That makes you sort of gravitate
towards her and her performance.

My only note for you is,
I want you to bubble like crazy

just so you have so much air
to just get those big notes.

[ Trilling ]
Just through the whole song,

'cause you're doing that,
"Ahh!" 'cause it's very easy.

Yeah.
Wow.
To make it --

I know, it's just like
nothing for her.

No, it's nothing for you!

What?
It's nothing for you.

Just like that, huh? Okay.
No, I just mean like,

it'll be easier.
-Breathing is such a thing that,

like, you just forget to do it.

Like, once you're in front of,
like, huge celebrities,

like, you're just like --
[ hyperventilating ]

You're, like, almost
hyperventilating at that point.

That hook...
? When the bones are good ?

? The rest don't matter ?

Yeah.
...is so good, and that's what

people watching at home know.
Right.

So the first time you hit it,
maybe hit it just what it is.

Okay.
When you go into that second
half of the chorus,

then you can expand it and you
can do those higher notes.

Okay.
Be more adventurous, yeah.

Yeah,
'cause you are so skilled

at exploratory stuff...
Thanks.

...that you don't want people to
take that for granted.

Okay.
And it's more impressive
the less you do.

For sure.
Yeah. It's like when

an "A" student gets an "A" minus
and everyone's like [gasps].

Well, all right.
All right, cool, cool!

We're gonna bring Shane up.
You nailed it!
Shaney!

I'm excited, dude.

You did dope.
You're gonna kill it.

Okay, Shane,
I got to say,

I was really excited
when I saw your song

because I love when people
don't categorize themselves.

? I can't count the times ?

? Almost said
what's on my mind ?

For the knockouts, I chose

"In Case You Didn't Know"
by Brett Young.

? Baby, I know that you've
been wondering ?

This song is about a guy,
he loves his lady,

and he can't live without her.

Personally, I have never
been in love.

? Case you didn't know ?

And growing up, I was scared
to talk to people.

I was extremely shy.

[ Cheers and applause ]

[ Shouts indistinctly ]
Kelly really brought me
out of my shell.

She's given me
so much great advice.

Kelly: When you
let that wall down...

Those are relatable moments,
yeah.

...those are
relatable moments.

Shane Q: Kelly is great at
crossing genres,

and that's exactly what I want
to do with my music.

? In case you didn't know ?

I loved it.

Dude, okay.
Thank you.

There was this one spot,
though, you held out a note

and I wanted you to hold it
a little longer.

A little longer?
And it was real big and open.

Okay.
? Know ?

It's so funny,
most singers are so rigid

that I have to be like,
"Just loosen up and be free!"
Right. Right.

And da-da-da.

You're the one
I'm gonna tell, like,

be a little more mapped out,
to where it doesn't sound like,

"And I just thought of this
riff, and I'm gonna do it."

All right.
You know, there's nothing

quite as sad as
unrequited love.

That's what I wrote about
for literally the first like

seven years of my career.

You're really, like,
plugging into the confessional,

desperate aspect
of this song.

And if you made it
less of a, like...

An act?
...hero's triumph, like...

Right.
...where you expect him to get
the girl at the end.

Okay.
It would almost be more
emotional if --

You weren't the one that got
the girl in the end.

The hard thing about Shane

going against Kiara is the fact
that they could not be

more different.

All right, come on up here.
Come on up, Kiara!

Great job, y'all!
It's gonna come down to

if Kiara stays on pitch
and has enough air.

It's gonna come down to
if Shane can control

when the spirit moves him.
[ Laughs ]

[ Cheers and applause ]

Whoo!

Now singing "In Case You Didn't
Know," here is Shane Q.

???

? I can't count the times ?

? Almost said
what's on my mind ?

? But I didn't ?

? I just couldn't ?

? Baby, I know that
you've been wondering ?

? Mm, so here goes nothing ?

? In case you didn't know ?

? Baby, I'm crazy 'bout you ?

? I would be lying if I said ?

? That I could live this life
without you ?

? Even though ?

? I don't tell you
all the time ?

? You had my heart
a long, long time ago ?

? In case you didn't know ?

? You've got all of me ?

? I belong to you ?

? You're my everything ?

? In case you didn't know ?

? I'm crazy 'bout you ?

? I would lying if I said ?

? That I could live this life
without you ?

? Even though ?

? I don't tell you
all the time ?

? You had my heart
a long, long time ago ?

? You had my heart ?

? A long, long time ago ?

? In case you didn't know ?

[ Cheers and applause ]

? This is "The Voice" ?

Daly:
Welcome back to the knockouts.

Whoo!
Kiara!

With "The Bones,"
here's Kiara Brown.

???

? We're in the homestretch ?

? Of the hard times ?

? We took a hard left ?

? But we're all right ?

? Yeah, life sure can try to ?

? To put love through it ?

? But we've built this right ?

? So nothing's ever
gonna move it ?

? When the bones are good,
the rest don't matter ?

? Yeah, the paint could peel,
the glass could shatter ?

? Let it rain ?

? But you and I remain
the same ?

? Bones are good ?

? The rest ?

? Ohh, it doesn't
really matter ?

? Paint could peel ?

? And the glass ?

? Oh, the glass, oh,
the glass could shatter ?

? Bones are good, the rest ?

? Oooooooh ?

? When there ain't a crack
in the foundation ?

? Baby, I know any storm
we're facing ?

? Will blow right over ?

? While we stay put ?

? The house don't fall
when the bones are good ?

? Oh, mm ?

Yeah!

[ Cheers and applause ]

???

Yeah!
Yes, sir.

Blake: Kiara, you're one of my
favorite people this season.

You just have this spirit
about you.

Thank you.
Your smile is infectious.

You just put me in a good mood
when I see you walk out here.

I appreciate that.
And I thought you stepped up

to the plate
and did a great job.

Thank you.
Shane, you did a perfect job

of singing that song.
Thank you.

I got to say, though, I would
urge you to feel a little more

urgency and more connection
and more passion when you sing,

because I know you're capable
of it.

This is about to start getting
narrowed down more and more.

Right.
I would go with Shane
on this one.

[ Cheers and applause ]

John:
Both of you were excellent.

Kiara, I really agree with Blake
about your energy.

Thank you.
You have a peaceful spirit.

It's very alluring.
Thank you.

You've pushed yourself
and challenged yourself.

Shane,
you always have delivered

really stunning,
beautiful vocals.

Thank you.
And, actually, I disagreed

a little bit with Blake about
the way you carried yourself,

because I felt like you were
conversational with the audience

when the time was right,
and then you still dazzled us

with your big notes and
your runs and stuff at the end.

And it all worked for me.
Thank you.

I would pick Shane.
Thank you.

[ Cheers and applause ]

Hi, Kiara.
Hi! [ Laughs ]

I love you.
You know that.

You're just learning
in this short amount of time

that you're vocally better
than you even probably

thought you were, and you can do
runs, and you can do bold notes.

I think you're really special.

Shane,
you're so effortless,

it's coming across
less passionate, maybe.

But it's hard to criticize.

It's so fun to watch.

Daly: Thank you, Coaches.

All right, Kelly,
it comes down to you.

Give us some thoughts
before you tell us who won.

Kelly:
Kiara, what you've done

just in the tiny amount of time
you've been on my team

is incredible.

Like, those high notes.
Thank you so much.

And, Shane, you're phenomenal
every time you come out here.

But there's
some kind of hesitancy,

and I don't know
if that's belief in yourself.

Because people, they don't want
to just hear you sing.

They want to feel you.

And that is what is completely
infectious and contagious

about not only
your vocals, Kiara,

but you are
such a beautiful light.

And, Shane,
you're that way, too.

I just need you to
show everyone.

[ Laughs ]
I'll get to it.

Let's do it.
You're like that in rehearsals.

He gets out here, and he's,
like, all shy,

and I'm like, "Where'd you go?"
[ Laughs ] I was like...

And, you both, I couldn't be
more happy that...

I'm fine.
Carson, why are you crying?

I'm -- I'm not.
It's fine!

I'm just kidding.
It's me.

Um...
[ Laughter ]

Kelly, I'm sorry,
but the time has come.

Yep.
Who is the winner
of this knockout?

Ugh!

The winner of this knockout
is someone, I think,

who is just a little more ready
than the other right now.

And the winner of this knockout
is Shane.

Shane Q, congratulations!
Thank you.

You're moving on to
the live playoffs.

So awesome.

Dude, killer job.

Thank you so much.

I agree with the coaches
about them saying

me kind of holding back
a little bit.

I just want to show
more emotions.

I want to give everything I got.

Kiara, anything you'd like to
say to Coach Kelly?

I'm just so grateful. Like, I've
looked up to you my entire life.

This is such a blessing,
seriously.

Thank you.
Yeah, Kiara!

Give it up
for Kiara Brown!

Kelly: It was so hard
seeing Kiara go home.

She's literally
the greatest human ever.

I'm gonna miss you.

That's -- Aww!
But I'm really excited to keep
working with Shane.

He's just so capable of just
so many amazing things vocally

and -- and even personally,
and I just can't wait

to show everybody that.

Daly:
Do you have a song for your
"Voice" favorites to perform?

Tell us using
the "Suggest A Song" feature

in the "Voice" app.

? This is "The Voice" ?

Daly: Welcome back.

Do you own
Taylor Guitars?

I never owned it.
Blake: Huh.

Didn't start it.
Do you own a Blakery?

[ Laughs ] That's good!

No, but I frequent them.

[ Laughs ]

So, Kat's been on my team
since day one.

I love her voice.

And just stole Lauren, so
I don't know as much about her,

but I know
I love her voice.

Blake: Both of these girls have
similar approaches to singing.

They have a softer side
to what they do,

but they also get up there
and belt when they want to.

Oh!
[ Gasps ]

I have a feeling
that's not for me.

Well, hi!
Okay!

Oh, my God.
They never react like that
when it's just me.

No, it's your outfit.
It's incredible.

[ Laughter ]
Hi.

I was so
star-struck walking in there,

like, "Oh, my gosh,
that is Taylor Swift."

Whoa! This is so weird!
That's sweet!

Oh, my gosh! Wow. Okay.
Oh, man.

I-I've seen you in concert
one time, and it was, like,

the very back row at Petco Park
in San Diego.

Oh, really? High five!
We did it.

So, yeah.

Getting advice from Taylor Swift
is a complete honor

because she knows exactly what
she's doing in this industry,

and I-I want to be
where she's at right now.

What song
are you gonna sing?

I'm singing "Kiss Me" by
Sixpence None the Richer.

I love that song.

Yeah, it's one of my mom's
favorite songs,

which is why I chose it.

My mom is super stoked
that I'm singing this song.

When I told her, she was, like,
freaking out.

I'm the youngest of five kids,

and my mom has made
every sacrifice

for me and for my siblings.

My mom was a teacher,
and I'm teaching piano,

and she has been
a big inspiration for me.

I would love to make my mom
proud by winning this knockout

and do this song for her.

? Oh, kiss me ?

I have been in
a relationship before

but not really serious
relationships --

just kind of, like, for fun.

? Out on the moonlit floor ?
Singing it kind of gets me

excited for the future
of maybe one day

really being that
intense about somebody.

? Kiss me ?

Taylor: Kat doesn't remind me
of anyone who's out there.

It's great when you see someone
who doesn't directly remind you

of anyone at all, 'cause that
means that that's a spot

out there in the musical world.

? So kiss me ?

I worship her voice.
Worship it.

Wow, I do, too. Oh, wow.
Thank you.

We talk about,
all the time,

how incredible
she'd sound on a record.

Oh, yeah, definitely.
T-That voice -- oh, my God.

I was thinking that same thing.
Mm-hmm.

The only thing that I could
think of --

look at the lyrics
and think about, like,

how you could move in a way that
kind of expressed those lyrics.

I would just make sure that,

since you are getting up
from the piano,

there's a way to kind of, like,
take time with it

and smooth it out
and don't look nervous

when you're making
this transition.

Being coached by Blake
and Taylor Swift together --

literally, the coolest thing
that's ever happened to me

in my entire life.

People are gonna love it.

Don't be nervous.
You're gonna kill this.

Thank you so much.
Yeah.

At this point, I haven't not
loved anything Kat's done.

I just love the sound
of her voice, the tone.

There's just something so
innocent about her and so pure.

I really believe in her
as an artist.

I'm so, so honored that
you picked me.

Lauren: For someone that's been
dreaming about this exact moment

for literally seven years...

The winner of this battle
is Hello Sunday.

[ Both screaming ]

...I was crushed.

Blake used his steal on me,

and I was so thankful.

I'm just learning so, so much,

and I want to continue to
keep learning.

I really wanted to challenge
myself, so I picked

"Breakaway" by Kelly Clarkson
for the knockouts.

I feel like it tells my story.

It's literally my life --
me moving from Chicago to L. A.

This is how I feel about
being here.

? Grew up in a small town ?

? And when the rain
would fall down ?

? I'd just stare out my window ?

Blake: Lauren's gonna be singing
a Kelly Clarkson song

in front of Kelly Clarkson.

So, as if there's not
enough pressure

in these knockout rounds,

Kelly's gonna be staring at her
while she's singing this.

? Break away ?

I kind of admire how she's just

willing to step up to the plate
and try it.

? Make a wish, take a chance ?

? Make a change ?

? And break away ?

Taylor: What I loved about
her performance

was the emotion and the rawness
and the honesty of it.

I guess it's three-quarters
of the way through the song,

you kind of went into
your head voice.

Falsetto.
And you ran out of air...

Yeah.
...at the very end of
the phrase, and so...

I'm nervous about that.

Yeah, you need a new plan
on where to get a breath.

What I love about your voice,
it's that break

that you have
in your voice.

I call it a dolphin squeak,
yeah.

There you go. There you go.
I love it.

I loved it. I really did.
But, I mean, that's so funny

that you say that,
because that's the part

that I'm insecure about.
It's my favorite thing

that happens while
you're singing, so...

Yay.
The talent that I have heard

on Team Blake
is absolutely incredible.

Group hug, everyone. Yes.
Group hug!

Group hug.
This is tough.

I really, really can feel
the coaches' anxiety about this.

Like, it's palpable.
Nice to meet you.

It's impossible to call
at this point.

I thought it was funny that you
stole her from Kelly

and now she's singing
"Breakaway" by Kelly Clarkson.

Oh, and using one of
Kelly's own songs...

Yeah.
...to shove it
back in her face.

Or to explain how hard
this was for her

to make that decision,
but, sure.

Seen that movie "School of Rock"
with Jack Black?
Yeah, yeah, for sure.

He's talking about how you
stick it to the man?

Yep.
Kelly's the man.

Okay. Okay.
Mm-hmm.

Should I tell her that
when I see her?

Well, if you think
it'll upset her, yes.

Okay, great.

[ Cheers and applause ]

Highly adorable.

Let's go, Kat!

With "Kiss Me,"
here's Kat Hammock.

???

???

? Oh, kiss me ?

? Beneath the milky twilight ?

? Lead me ?

? Out on the moonlit floor ?

? Lift your open hand ?

? Strike up the band ?

? And make the fireflies dance ?

? Silver moon's sparkling ?

? So kiss me ?

Whoo!

? Kiss me ?

? Out of the bearded barley ?

? Nightly ?

? Besides the green,
green grass ?

? Swing ?

? Swing the spinning step ?

? You wear those shoes,
and I will wear that dress ?

? Oh, kiss me ?

? Beneath the milky twilight ?

? Lead me ?

? Out on the moonlit floor ?

? Lift your open hand ?

? Strike up the band ?

? And make the fireflies dance ?

? Silver moon's sparkling ?

I love it.
Yeah.

? So kiss me ?

? Oh, mm ?

? So kiss me ?

[ Cheers and applause ]

That was great.

Whoo-oo!

? This is "The Voice" ?

Daly:
Welcome back to the knockouts.

[ Cheers and applause ]

Whoo! Yeah!

Now singing "Breakaway,"
here is Lauren Hall.

I love it!

? Da da-da da da ?

? Da da-da da da ?

? Da da-da da da da da ?

? Grew up in a small town ?

? And when the rain
would fall down ?

? I'd just stare out my window ?

? Dreaming of what could be ?

? And if I'd end up happy ?

? I would pray ?

? I could break away ?

? I'll spread my wings
and I'll learn how to fly ?

? I'll do what it takes
till I touch the sky ?

? And I'll make a wish,
take a chance ?

? Make a change ?

? And break away ?

? Buildings with
a hundred floors ?

? Swinging 'round
revolving doors ?

? Baby, I don't know where
they'll take me, yeah ?

? Gotta keep moving on ?

? Moving on, fly away ?

? Break away ?

? I'll spread my wings
and I'll learn how to fly ?

? Though it's not easy
to tell you goodbye ?

? I've gotta take a risk,
take a chance ?

? Make a change ?

? And break away ?

? Out of the darkness
and into the sun ?

? But I won't forget
the place I come from ?

? And I'll take a risk,
take a chance ?

? Make a change ?

? And break away ?

? And break away ?

? And break awa-a-a-ay ?

[ Cheers and applause ]

Whoo! Whoo!

Lauren, that was, uh,
quite a challenge,

to take on a Kelly Clarkson song

right in front of
Kelly Clarkson.

Kelly is one of the great pop
singers in the world right now.

And...
[ Cheers and applause ]

...I'm not just saying
that 'cause she's here.

That's a fact.
But you really did a great job.

My favorite part of your voice
is when you're up in

the high notes, but it has
that crackle to it.

You just feel, like,
the intensity

and the pain in your voice.

It's very compelling.

Kat, though --
that was a revelation.

I loved all the little slides
you were doing,

all the melodic changes.

It couldn't have been
a better song for you to cover,

and you executed the vocal
almost flawlessly.

If I were to choose,
I-I would pick your performance

as my favorite
from this round.

Gwen:
Lauren, I agree with John.

My favorite part is kind of
when it became you

and your -- your voice
was crackling at the top.

That is a really beautiful part
of your voice --

Thank you.
And I think you did a great job.

Kat, your voice, I was like,

"My God, it is an angel!"

It is so original
and so soothing and comforting,

and you were holding notes out

that wouldn't normally be
held out,

and there was so much confidence
in you.

You're one of my favorites
on the entire show,

so congratulations
on your performance.

[ Applause ]

Kelly:
Lauren, when you started,

I mean, you sing that better
than I do, really.

And especially when I recorded
that, I was --

I was very young, and I --
I don't know that I really

grasped, like,
what I was singing --

like, the lyrics
and the meaning.

And it almost sounded like
you honed into that message

better than I did.

"Breakaway" is a waltz.
? Da da-da di, da da ?

And it's like
a sing-along.

So I wanted
to hear more of you

and less of the song.

Like,
you know what I'm saying?

Kat, I thought you did
an amazing job.

I do think you have
a very similar tone

and sound to
the original singer.

I just want to commend you
'cause it's really hard

when you do have a similar voice
to someone

and you cover their song.

Sometimes we get trapped
in that imitation game.

And I did think that you did
a really good job

of actually showing us
who you are.

Really well done, Kat.

Daly: Thank you, Coaches.
Thank you.

All right, Blake, it all comes
down to you, buddy.

Give us a few thoughts
on each of these performances,

and then tell us who won.
Well, my thoughts are,

I'm really happy for --
for both of you

because this is
a big stage

and you both have handled
this thing really well.

Lauren, you know, one of
the things that we talked about

in rehearsal was,
I wish you would embrace

that part of your voice
that starts to break up.

That's the sweet spot.
Yeah.

And, Kat, I am literally blown
away by your originality

and your talent
and how humble you are.

Tough one here, Blake. Who is
the winner of this knockout?

???

The winner of this knockout
is Kat.

[ Cheers and applause ]

Kat, congratulations!

This is insane. This means
I'm gonna be delaying college

a semester, so this is
a big performance

for me to really figure it out.

So I'm --
I'm just blown away right now.

I don't know what to say.

Lauren, anything you want to
say to Blake?

Um, thank you for stealing me
and giving me a second chance.

I mean, singing this
on this stage in front of you

is one of the best moments
of my life.

Give it up for Lauren Hall one
more time, ladies and gentlemen!

Thank you, Lauren.

Dude...
you're killer.

You know
I love your voice.

I love your voice.

Keep singing.

Blake: Kat just got this
once-in-a-lifetime style,

and the other coaches
are starting to figure out

she's a threat to everybody
in this competition.

Daly: Coming up,
an artist takes a risk.

What song are you singing?
"Like I'm Gonna Lose You"...

Oh!
...by Meghan Trainor.

Aww!
Meghan Trainor and John Legend!

Kind of nerve-racking
singing his song

in front of him.
Daly: And later...

? Maybe I am just not enough ?

Oh, my God!

? 'Cause sooner or later ?

I'm fully crying.
Oh, my gosh!

Daly:
...moving performances...

? Almost is never enough ?

...and a crucial steal.

Yes!
[ Whoosh ]

Yeah!
That's the sound of a steal!

[ Laughs ]

? This is "The Voice" ?

Daly: Welcome back.

Okay,
so, our next pairing --

we have Will,
and we have Zoe.

John: Will and Zoe both are
very charismatic performers

in the same genre --
soulful pop --

but very different voices.

It'll be interesting to see how
they go against each other.

Zoe: Oh, my God.
I'm so nervous.

Hello!
Oh, what?!

Hi.
Look who's here!

This is cool.
To see her in front of me,

it's just like,
"Whoa, you're Taylor Swift.

Please don't make me sing in
front of you."

Hey, I'm Taylor.
Nice to meet you.

"Holy cow. It's Taylor Swift."
I'm Will.

Hey, what's up?
Hi!

I used to have pictures
of her on my wall.

And the fact that I was hugging
her -- I didn't have words.

So, what are you gonna sing?
I'm singing "I Don't Care"

by Ed Sheeran
featuring Justin Bieber.

Ah!
I kind of relate to it,
you know.

Yeah.
Growing up on
the autism spectrum,

I'm always kind of awkward
in social situations,

so it stood out to me
when I first heard it.

Will: Ed Sheeran is probably
my biggest influence

in terms of this is who I try
to emulate when I'm onstage,

but I want to try and make it
different by including some of

my vocal heroes --
Aretha Franklin,
Al Green, Marvin Gaye.

He did karate.
Yeah.

I saw him do
a karate move.

[ Laughter ]

Being one step away
from the live playoffs...

Let's go!

...I want to win this bad.

I don't want this journey to end
just yet.

? I'm at a party
I don't wanna be at ?

? And I don't ever wear a suit
and tie, oh ?

John: Will --
he's such a great performer.

He's a great singer, but that
charisma goes a long way.

? I don't like nobody but you ?

? I hate everyone here ?

Taylor: Will is such
an interesting performer

because he's really got
his own thing.

It's, like, adorable.

You know, he'd do this little
kind of shuffle-y,

anxious-looking movements, and
I just thought it suited him.

It's really cool.
? Do do do do do do do ?

[ Laughs ]
Yeah, Will!

What I really love is the very
beginning, just how, like,

swagged out and, like,
super cool you entered the song.

It was so fun.

It felt like you were playing
with the point of this song,

which is that parties
are awkward.

Yeah.
And it felt like you were
teasing us

with that awkwardness,
but doing it purposefully.

But maybe there are times
you could make things a little,

tiny bit easier on yourself
vocally.

Fair. That's fair.
I think one of my favorite

things about Ed Sheeran's
writing is his ability to create

a hook that anchors a song
and it's immediately memorable.

So a way that you could simplify
it is to just sing the...

? I can deal with
the bad nights ?

I would kind of stick
with that hook.

Okay.
There's always a power to
holding notes.

Yeah.
Maybe go...

? When I'm with my baby,
yeah ?

It might just be a nice way
to put a button on it.

Okay. Love it.
You sound so good.

Oh, man, thank you.

Zoe!
Kill it.

What song are you singing?

"Like I'm Gonna Lose You"...

Oh!
...by Meghan Trainor.

Aww!
Meghan Trainor and John Legend!

[ Both laugh ]

It's kind of nerve-racking
singing his song

in front of him.

? Woke up in tears
with you by my side ?

? Breath of relief... ?
The message of the song is

to cherish the moments
that you have with people

'cause you never know how much
time you have with them left.

And I do relate to this song
with my godmother, Sarah Gaines.

She recently passed from cancer.

[ Voice breaking ]
Um...yeah.

I'm definitely keeping her in
my heart and doing this for her.

There it is!

Knowing that John
used his one save on me,

I just want to show him
that he didn't go wrong

by making that decision.

? Like I'm gonna lose you ?

Taylor:
Zoe is so talented.

I think she even has really
great instincts about

how to convey the emotions
of the song.

You have such a good intuition
about what you should be doing

on a stage.
Thank you.

Like, there's nothing I can say.
This is so crazy.

You sound perfect, too.
Yeah.

It's just like
everything's perfect.

But it's truncating
every section.

Yeah.
I'd rather live in a section

and just not do a section,

rather than try
to get to every verse.
Sure.

Maybe just do one verse

all the way through just to let
it breathe, one pre-chorus,

and then the chorus, and then
do that little breakdown

and build to the end,
and then that be it.

Yeah, it's just the arrangement.
Yeah.

Literally, you're such a pro.
Thank you.

That was one of the examples
that showed me

how much John really cares
about his team.

He's very hands-on as a coach.

Both:
? Like I'm saying goodbye ?

John really wants to win this.

[ Laughs ]

This is gonna be tough.

John: This knockout
is gonna come down to

who delivers in the clutch.

Thank you.
Good meeting you, too.

When the moment calls for it,

are you gonna rise
to that moment?

I will go in
and just be open.

And you see how people react
to pressure.

Exactly.
Sometimes people shrink.

Some people get bigger.

The ones that get bigger,
they got to keep going.

That's really cool.
Yeah.

[ Cheers and applause ]

Whoo!

Wow, she's so pretty.

Now singing
"Like I'm Gonna Lose You,"

here is Zoe Upkins.

???

? I found myself dreaming ?

? In silver and gold ?

? Like a scene from a movie ?

? That every
broken heart knows ?

? We were walking on moonlight ?

? And you pulled me close ?

? Split second
and you disappeared ?

? And then I was all alone ?

? Woke up in tears
with you by my side ?

? Breath of relief,
and I realized ?

? No, we're not
promised tomorrow ?

? So I'm gonna love you ?

? Like I'm gonna lose you ?

? I'm gonna hold you ?

? Like I'm saying goodbye ?

? Wherever we're standing ?

Yeah!

? I won't take you for granted ?

? 'Cause we'll never know when ?

? When we'll run out of time ?

? I'm gonna love you ?

? Like I'm gonna lose you ?

? I'm gonna hold you ?

? Like I'm saying goodbye ?

? Wherever we're standing ?

? I won't take you for granted ?

? 'Cause we'll never know when ?

? When we'll run out of time ?

? So I'm gonna love you ?

? Like I'm gonna lose you ?

? I'm gonna love you ?

? Like I'm gonna lose you ?

[ Cheers and applause ]

Zoe!

So good.

Whoo!

? This is "The Voice" ?

Daly:
Welcome back to the knockouts.

[ Cheers and applause ]

Yeah!

With "I Don't Care,"
here is Will Breman.

???

? I'm at a party
I don't wanna be at ?

? And I don't ever wear
a suit and tie, yeah ?

? I'm wonderin' if I can
sneak out the back ?

? Nobody's even lookin' me
in my eyes ?

? But then you take my hand ?

? Finish my drink, say,
"Shall we dance?" ?

? Hell, yeah ?

? You know I love ya,
did I ever tell you ?

? You make it better like that ?

? Don't think I fit in
at this party ?

? Everyone's got
so much to say ?

? Oh ?

? When we walked in,
I said I'm sorry ?

? Ah, but now I think
that we should stay ?

? 'Cause I don't care ?

? When I'm with my baby, yeah ?

? All the bad things disappear ?

? And you're making me feel
like maybe I am somebody ?

? I can deal with
the bad nights ?

? When I'm with my baby, yeah ?

? Do do-do do do do do ?

What?!
Let's get your hands in the air!

Let's go!
? I don't like nobody but you ?

? It's like you're
the only one here ?

? I don't like nobody but you ?

? Baby, I don't care ?

? I don't like nobody but you ?

? I hate everyone here ?

? I don't like nobody but you,
baby, yeah ?
Oh, my God!

? 'Cause I don't care ?

? When I'm with my baby, yeah ?

Hey!
? All the bad things disappear ?

? And you're making me feel
like maybe I am somebody ?

Whoo!
? I can deal with
the bad nights ?

? When I'm with my baby, yeah ?

Sing it!
? Do do-do do do do do ?

? Whooooa ?

? I can deal with
the bad nights ?
Whoo!

? When I'm with my baby, yeah ?

? Do do-do do do do do ?

[ Laughs ]

Whoo!

[ Cheers and applause ]

John: Yeah!

Wow, you guys.
That was so good.

Zoe, that sounded like
your album.

Your voice is perfect
for that song...

Thank you.
...and the fact that you're
a 16-year-old girl

and have that much confidence
and ability

to really channel the lyric, it
was a really good performance.

Thank you.
And, Will, I think there's

something really magnetic
about you.

You're so unique.

The way you sing,
you're so effortless.

These, like, runs that come out
that you're like,

"How did he just do that?"
So it's like

you just want to keep watching,
and then you're doing

all this other stuff onstage,

and it's getting us
all involved.

I'm such a huge fan,
I'd have to say

Will is the winner
of this knockout for me.

What?
Okay.

Thank you.

Will, Zoe, those were both
phenomenal performances.

Yeah.
This is gonna be a really hard

thing for him because one brings
straight-up fire.

Will,
every time you're onstage,

I have to stand up
and dance with you.

Ed Sheeran
is not easy to cover.

He's like a white rapper.
Yeah.

But, then, Zoe,
that's not normal.

Like, how fluid you are,
how comfortable you are.

And when you were going up
so high and then right there

at the end you brought it back
down in the alto range --

that's incredible.
Yeah.

I am really mad
that I don't have a steal,

because
I really don't think

either one of you
should go home.

I am not gonna help
Mr. Legend out.

Oh, come on, Kelly.
Nope, nope.

I-I don't know why
you put them together.

That was dumb.
You want me to help you?

Uh-huh.
Blake, please, say something.

You're screwed.
How does that sound?

Will, I got to say, every time
this guy gets on this stage,

something that we're all going
to smile about

is going to happen.
Mm-hmm.

And it's really special.
Thank you.

-"Zo-ee" or "Zo"?
-"Zo-ee."

Do I do that every time?
He said this last time, too.

Yes.
It's not that hard.

There's famous people
named Zoe.

I can't even remember
what's in this cup.
Leave me alone.

[ Laughter ]

Zoe Saldana.
Zoe Kravitz.

These are famous people
named Zoe.

There's no one famous
named "Zo."

I'm gonna screw up names.
Get over it.

[ Laughter ]

It truly is special that you're
that calm and standing there

like a normal grown-up human
being right now, and you're 16,

and you're looking at me like,
"Yeah, that's what I do."

[ Laughter ]

That's my help.

Aw, come on. Come on!
No, you --

you already beat me up
about the name.

I'm not helping you any more.
Wow.

Yeah.
You guys are worthless.

Thank you, Gwen.

-Thank you, Coaches.
-Wait a minute.

"Toe" is not pronounced
"To-ee," okay?

So, if I have to say,
"Is it 'Zo' or 'Zo-ee'..."

You had a Chloe.
...that's why.

Chloe Sevigny.
Chloe.

Khlo? Kardashian.
Kardashian?

Khlo? Kardashian.
There's a --

There's Khlo?
in the Kardashians?
Chloe Sevigny.

Yes.

[ Laughter ]

Who you gonna choose,
John?

I'm trying to stall because
I don't know who I'm picking.

John, give us some thoughts
before you tell us the winner.

I think Zoe has consistently
shown me that she is so poised,

such a gifted singer,
so beyond her years.

You're gonna dominate in
whatever realm you want to do,

Thank you.
So thank you for letting me
work with you.

Will,
you do have that fire

and that energy that everyone
is so attracted to.

I don't know what's
gonna happen next.

When certain people do that,
it makes me feel uneasy,

but when you do it,
it makes me feel, like, excited,

because I know
you're gonna pull it off.

-Thank you, John.
-It's really fun to watch you

perform, hear your creativity,
hear your artistry.

So, yeah,
I have a tough decision.

You do, John. Who is the winner
of this knockout?

You don't have any advice,
Blake?

[ Gwen laughs ]

What are you gonna do? You --
Are you stalling right now?

I'm stalling!

? This is "The Voice" ?

Daly: Welcome back.

John, who is the winner
of this knockout?

I'm still stalling.

Um...

the winner
of this knockout...

is Will.

Will, congratulations.

You should've won this.

What a tough competition.

Will is so creative
with his vocal choices.

He's really, really
exciting to watch,

and I'm excited to continue
to coach him.

Thank you, sir. Can't wait
to keep working with you.

It's unreal, man.

It's unreal.
I don't know what to think.

Hoo!

[ Applause ]

Coaches, let me remind you
that Zoe is available to steal.

You have a chance to steal.
If I had a steal,

I would steal you.

Zoe, anything you'd like
to say to John?

John, you have been
the best coach ever,

and I'm so blessed to have

been able to work with you,
and just thank you.

Thank you.
Aww, I wish I had a steal!

Give it up for Zoe Upkins,
ladies and gentlemen.

Zoe sounds like a star,
but I didn't use my steal on Zoe

because I'm just looking
for something really unique.

There they are.
Taylor: Hey.

Oh, snap!

Boom!

Hey.
Taylor Swift!

Whoa!
I'm Taylor. Nice to meet you.

I'm Royce.
I was completely blown away.

Royce: Taylor Swift hugged me.

One of the best songwriters
of our time.

All the feels.
This is rad.

This is really cool.

So, Royce --
he is my reggae guy,

but he's not in
a reggae box,

and he's a really good
performer, too.

Thanks.

? I wanna give you some good,
good lovin', hey ?

Wow!
The battles were rewarding.

I felt really proud of myself
and my partner.

Royce, really, really incredible
with your whole style.

It brought tears
as I walked backstage.

Ahh!
Why am I crying?

I'm super happy right now.

I've been spending the last
10 years of my life

making ends meet
as a professional musician.

Anywhere anyone wanted to hear
a message of love,

that's where I played.

I'm excited. I'm so excited.
Oh, man.

All right, who's going first?
Jake.

Jake, you're rare, because your
style -- it's something

that we all grew up on
but nobody does it anymore,

and he's been touring with
his dad since he's -- how old?

From like 13 to 16.

After playing with my dad
for a long time,

I started a rock 'n' roll band

with people that were
a little closer to my age,

and now I've been playing music
on my own for nine years now.

? Instead of making me better ?
Whew!

Rock needs a voice like you
right now.

[ Laughs ] Wow.

? Oh, oh, oh,
there's an energy ?

For the knockouts,
I'm gonna be singing "Powerful"

by Major Lazer featuring
Ellie Goulding and Tarrus Riley.

? It's so powerful
I can feel it ?

Normally the song is played
with EDM-type of sounds --

But I rearranged the song
to show my artistry,

make it more organic
and stripped down.

? Powerful ?

Wow! Whoa.
Jake, my God.

It's crazy...
That's insane.

...what your voice
can do.

My only thing that I'm missing
from you is just you.

You need to be a little bit
more exposed and...

Please break my shell open.
It's all in the eyes.

Yes.
It's the difference between

looking front and down
a little bit,

and just bring it slightly up,
and, like, there are times

when you can turn your head
and sing to them.

You turn and sing to them.

'Cause everyone in this audience

is someone that you can
communicate with.

It's really gonna make
a huge difference.

He's so effortlessly good
at everything

that he almost looks like
he's phoning it in

even though he's not.

When people go and they solo

and they make it look like
they're, like, living...

Yeah.
...and they're bleeding into

their guitar, it's like it's --
Like my life depends on it.

Yeah, absolutely.

Which I really do feel like,
you know?

Which -- yeah.
This is my dream.

Aww, get in here.
Just need to sing.

-Buddy.
-I'm usually a very energetic

performer, but being on
"The Voice," it's a scary thing.

It can be kind of nerve-racking,
so I'm gonna try to really

open myself up to the audience.

You play Taylors, huh?

Yes, I do.
Good taste.

[ Laughs ]

Hi.
Hello.

Wow, I feel so awesome
right now.

You should. You look awesome.
It's gonna be awesome.

? Life's a game
and meant for everyone ?

? Yeah, and love is a prize ?

? So wake me up ?
I chose "Wake Me Up"

by Aloe Blacc because I want to
show Gwen

this singer/songwriter
heart that I have,

and I think the lyrics are
touching me even more

being here on "The Voice."

I want my wife and my kids
to hear this message

to never give up
on their dreams...

? So wake me up
when it's all over ?

...and not to be afraid
to be vulnerable.

? I didn't know I was lost ?

Gosh.
God, you're so natural.

You have this cool creepin'
around thing you do that's,

like -- it's very signature,
and I like it.

I think I was just so in awe
of the genre switch-up...

Mm-hmm.
...which, this is so smart

for you, but I'm voting
for no clapping.

I don't think
it's necessary.

What you could do for that
moment where you were gonna

do the clap...
Mm-hmm.

...it's coming up here
and singing it

right to the audience
and be strong.

Yeah.
Like, the strongest you ever are

in this song is when you, like,
stand here and convey, like,

a real clarity.
And be the star that you are.

Yeah.
And be able to control the room

the way you have done already.
Yeah.

Thanks so much for the advice,
like...
Sick.

Gwen: Royce has star quality
onstage.

He just needs to figure out
where he's gonna move

and what he's gonna do
with his body.

Taylor: Amazing, amazing job.

Gwen: Jake -- I can't connect
fully with him.

It's like a star-quality thing.

If he can let that shield down,

then he is going to be
a major threat to Royce.

Make it really hard
on me.

I literally sent my team to
Blake to try to help me pair,

because I was like,
"My heart will hurt

if I have to pair them,"
and then he didn't --

I sabotaged her.
He didn't even --

No, he never responded to
my text.

[ Both laugh ]

Sabotage.
Sabotage.

[ Cheers and applause ]

Daly: With "Powerful,"
here is Jake Haldenvang.

[ Cheers and applause ]

? Oh, my, my, my,
what you do to me ?

? Like lightning
when I'm swimming in the sea ?

? From the very first time
we loved ?

? From the very first time
we touched ?

? Yeah, walking on wires
and powerlines ?

? When you put your body
on top of mine ?

? Every time that you
lift me up ?

? To the heavens
and stars above ?

? Oh, Lord of Mercy,
I'm begging you, please ?

? I'm feeling drained,
I need love ?

? You charge me up
like electricity ?

? Jump-start my heart
with your love ?

? Whoa, whoa ?

? There's an energy ?

Wow!
? When you hold me ?

? When you touch me ?

? It's so powerful ?

? I can feel it ?

? When you hold me ?

? When you touch me ?

? It's so powerful ?

? Powerful, yeah ?

? Ooh, yeah ?
Dang.

Wow.
? I couldn't leave
if I wanted to ?

? 'Cause something keeps pulling
me back to you ?

? Every time that you
lift me up ?

? To the heavens
and stars above ?

? Oh, Lord of Mercy,
I'm begging you, please ?

? I'm feeling drained,
I need love ?

? You charge me up
like electricity ?

? Jump-start my heart
with your love ?

? There's an energy ?

? When you hold me ?

? When you touch me ?

? It's so powerful ?

? I can feel it ?

? When you hold me ?

? When you touch me ?

? It's so powerful, whoa ?

? Powerful, yeah ?

[ Cheers and applause ]

So good.

Yeah.
So good!

? This is "The Voice" ?

Daly:
Welcome back to "The Voice."

[ Cheers and applause ]

Now singing "Wake Me Up,"
here's Royce Lovett.

???

? Feeling my way
through the darkness ?

? Guided by your beating heart ?

? I can't tell where
the journey will end ?

? But I know where to start ?

? They tell me that
I'm too young to understand ?

? They say I'm caught up
in a dream ?

? And life will pass me by
if I don't open up my eyes ?

? Well, that's fine by me ?

? So wake me up
when it's all over ?

? When I'm wiser and I'm older ?

? All this time I was
finding myself ?

? And I didn't know I was lost ?

? Oh ?

? I wish that I could be
forever this young ?

? Not afraid to close my eyes ?

? Life's a game,
and it's meant for everyone ?

? And love is the prize ?

Now you sing.
? Wake me when it's all over ?

? When I'm wiser and I'm older ?

? All this time
I was finding myself ?

? And I didn't know I was lost ?

? I didn't know I was lost ?

? I didn't know I was lost ?

[ Cheers and applause ]

Whoo!

Yes.

That was so good.

Jake, you have this
incredible range.

It's like Prince-esque.
Thank you. Damn.

You got major falsetto, but
those lows are really beautiful,

but, man, Royce, you have
stage presence for days.

Like, it's a party.
Thank you.

But I will say,
I'd probably lean towards Jake

just with those
two performances.

Okay.
[ Cheers and applause ]

Did you say "Prince-esque"?
Like, Prince-esque, you know?

I like that. Prince-esque.
Not a princess,
but a Prince-esque singer.

I think the thing for me,
Royce,

is I still haven't quite
figured out

who you are
as an artist yet.

I certainly didn't expect that
style a-and that song from you,

and, Jake, I think we need
to start seeing

some of your personality
coming out...
Yeah.

...and to see more of you when
you get up there and perform.

Jake, when you hit some of those
notes, it's just rapturous.

It's beautiful.

And then, Royce, we loved
the charm of your performance,

the ease that you have
on the stage.

That is not something
that's easy to do.

So, it is close to me.
It is very, very close.

I think I'm gonna lean
a little bit toward Jake

just because I think he's
a slightly better vocalist.

[ Applause ]
Daly: Thank you, Coaches.

All right, Gwen,
it all comes down to you.

It's a difficult decision
indeed.

Give us your thoughts.
I'm just really impressed

with my fellow coaches
because they are picking up on

all the things
that we talked about.

Jake,
your vocal blows me away.

To be in this pressurized
situation where you have

that much control --
it's moving me to tears.

I'm so in love with you,
Royce.

I love that you bounce genres.

This is super hard.
-But the time has come.

Who is the winner of
this knockout?

Okay, um...

I love you guys both so much,
and purely in this moment,

I'm gonna say that...

???

Jake, you're the winner
of this knockout.

[ Cheers and applause ]
Jake, congratulations,

you're moving on to
the live playoffs.

Gwen:
Jake has this undeniable voice,

and his vocal ability
just shocks you.

Thank you so much.

Jake is the only rocker
in the entire competition.

He's definitely in his own lane.

We gotta work.
We gotta work.

We gotta work.
I know.

Gwen said that it almost was
bringing her to tears,

so, you know, I don't want to
say that's my ultimate goal,

but...it feels incredible.

Coaches, let me remind you,
Royce is available to steal.

Royce, anything you want to say
to your coach?

Royce:
I'm taking so much with me.

I was a sponge around you,
and I really appreciate it.

Thank you.

Give it up for Royce Lovett,
ladies and gentlemen.

John: I didn't steal Royce
because I'm waiting for somebody

that dazzles me, that wows me,
that makes me think,

"I need them on my team."

Aw, that's hard.
That was hard.

That was tough.
It was so close.

I think you definitely made
the right choice.
Yeah.

I mean, that guy has
a huge range.

And when he hits those big
notes, it's like, "Hwah!"

Yeah.
It's, like, nobody does that.

? This is "The Voice" ?

Daly:
Welcome back to the knockouts

at Universal Studios Hollywood.

We didn't even plan this --
black and black.

I know, I know.
It's a whole thing.

You've got rainbow sparkles.
I've got rainbow stripes.

Yeah, and you've got rainbow.
It's amazing.

I totally peaked
in your window.

I was like,
"What is she wearing?"

I'm just kidding.
That would be creepy.
Oh, yeah, I mean,
I would respect that.

I would -- [ Laughs ]
That's just research.

Kelly:
Okay, so, these next two --

Alex is alternative
singer/songwriter.

It's kind of all there.

And then these two girls are 14.

They're ready.
They're good students.

Let's see.
What's up, y'all?

This is Taylor!

Hi!
Look at her.

[ Laughter ]

What's up, Alex?
What's up?
Hey, I'm Alex.

Nice to meet you.
I'm Taylor.

And this is Hello Sunday.

Both: Taylor Swift!

Oh, my God.

[ Both laugh ]

I'm good.
I'm -- Okay.

Basically, y'all win for
greatest mega-mentor ever.

You get Taylor,
so you're welcome.

I usually have one of her CDs
on repeat all day every day.

[ Laughs ]
Yep.

Y'all picked songs this week,
so what'd you pick?

Yes, I picked "I'm Not the Only
One" by Sam Smith.

That's a good song, brother.
Yeah.

It's a bit daunting.
No, not for you.

Your range is sick.
Thank you.

I want to make you cry, like...
You want to make us cry!

Get it! No pressure,
just Taylor Swift. [ Laughs ]

? You and me, we made a vow ?

I chose this song because
I've been in relationships

where trust has been broken,

and I feel like this
is my chance

to use things in my past and
really sell the performance.

? And maybe I am
just not enough ?

Before coming to "The Voice,"

my band that I had been playing
with grew apart,

and it was time to -- to call it
quits, so I've been kind of

homeless musically, and having
"The Voice" has really

helped me find that home.

? Said take me ho-o-me ?

Now I'm here, I want to keep
going on this journey.

Dude, Alex, when you do
that low stuff,

and you go all the way up
to the high, it's so cool.

You are a very,
very strong singer.

My concern was I didn't get
a glimpse of your personality

that much as a vocalist.

Kelly ultimately chose me,
and I'm really happy,

so I do not want to
let her down.

? I'm crazy ?
Hey!

Taylor:
Alex has an amazing voice,

and he has a really great
presence onstage.

He had a great idea
with starting with a stool.

I think it's cool to have
performance dynamics

where you start doing something,
you end up doing something else.

I was like,
"Okay, that's promising."

I love -- heart! --
the breaks in your voice.

We would like more of
the aching.

Yeah.
Thank you.

I love how you're really using
your body.

Thank you.
Maybe you could simplify the run

on "by lying and tearing us up."
Yeah.

'Cause you do some really
complex stuff after that.

Right, right.
And open up the vowel.

Oh.
You closed it down on "up."

[ Vocalizing ]
It's just such an easy thing

to impress people by --
just holding and sustaining,

you know, some big note, and
then doing the runs around it.

Right. I was gonna play guitar
on this one, but, you know,

John was hard on me for my
battle, saying that he wanted to

hear more personality, and,
like, I feel like I can give

that with this.
You know what I mean?

Yeah.
For the end, the...

? And I know, and I know ?

...I've been doing that one in
falsetto, but I feel like

it's been up, and, like,
that's a good place

to bring it back down.
I think you could do both.

? And I know, and I know, and I
know, and I know, and I know ?

Thank you.
All right, well, great job.

Yeah, thank you.
Killer job, man.

Amazing. Unbelievable job.
All right, come on up,
Hello Sunday.

I love how nervous
you make people.

Make sure y'all are giving
the same energy.

Like, I shouldn't hear
one over the other.

It should sound like
one voice.

? I came in like
a wrecking ball ?

In the battles...
We proved ourselves.

Hello Sunday,
the fireworks were like, ahh.

We had to work
our way up there,

but I think we did
a pretty good job.

Yeah.

Being at the knockouts,

it's a life-changing experience
for us.

Back home in Atlanta,
we've been doing a lot of music,

going to the studio,
working at events.

We did one that was called
Heal the Hood Memphis.

The whole purpose of
Heal the Hood was to raise money

for the kids who don't have
book bags and supplies.

Seriously, y'all,
it's so good.

Me and Chelsea
definitely want to show Kelly

that she made the right choice
turning for us...
Mm-hmm.

...and we're going to knock out
this knockout round.

? I'd like to say
we gave it a try ?

Yeah.

We chose to sing "Almost Is
Never Enough" by Ariana Grande.

? And maybe
we just weren't right ?

We thought it would be the
perfect song to evoke emotion

because we want to, you know,
stretch and grow.

? 'Cause sooner or later ?

When I started out,
I was 10 or 11 years old

singing for people, but seeing
young performers

who so firmly have their musical
identity figured out --

I was so completely shattered
by it.

I fully fell apart.
It was that good.

? Never enough ?

[ Gasps ]
Oh, my God.

You're 14.
I'm fully crying.

Oh, my gosh!
I don't know why.

It's just really,
really great.

Hello Sunday brought
Taylor Swift to tears.

I definitely have my work
cut out for me.

They're really talented
beyond their years.

Oh, my God. It was so...
Thank you.

It's so good, y'all.
It was perfect.

Thank you!
The amount that you were

connecting with each other,
the amount that you were then

facing out and connecting
with the audience --

Oh, my God.
I'm so sorry.

She's blown away.

When she walked on that stage
with tears in her eyes --

like, they weren't just there,
they were --

There.
It assured us that

we could actually move people
when we sing.
Mm-hmm.

[ Laughs ]

I promise I'm okay
in my personal life.

This is not
from some outside place.

I'm gonna hug her.
[ Laughs ]

[ Sighs ]
It is very touching.

That's the thing, like, and it
was a perfect song to pick.

It's amazing how well you
connect to something

that maybe you don't even know
what it feels like.

Literally, at any age, that
would've moved me like that.

That was almost perfect.

But it was just like there are
notes that y'all really --

Yeah.
...have to be in sync

and make sure those harmonies
are dead on.

Okay.
I think that'd be really cool.

I think that
Alex and Hello Sunday --

that's gonna be my toughest
moment of who to pick,

'cause I don't have a save.

We want you to be stolen.

Honestly, I'm super screwed,
because everyone of my --

Don't say that word.
Yes, ma'am.

Aim higher.
Um...but --

She's in
a difficult situation.

Yes, I'm in
a difficult situation.

She finds herself
in a complex predicament.

[ Laughs ] All those words
are necessary.

I'll be here all day to
translate.

Yes.
We'll see you for knockouts.

Okay. Bye!
All righty, bye!

[ Cheers and applause ]

This is really good.

[ Cheers and applause ]

Yeah!

With "I'm Not the Only One,"
here's Alex Guthrie.

???

? You and me, we made a vow ?

All right.

? For better or for worse ?

? And I can't believe
you let me down ?

? But the proof
is in the way it hurts ?

? 'Cause you say I'm crazy ?

? But you don't think
I know what you've done ?

? But when you call me baby ?

? I know I'm not the only one ?

Yeah.

? Oh, no, no ?

? And I have loved you
for many years ?

? And maybe
I am just not enough ?

? Oh, oh, oh ?

? You've made me realize
my deepest fear ?

? By lying ?

? And tearing us up ?

? You say I'm crazy ?

Yeah!

? 'Cause you don't think I know
what you've done ?

Whoo!

? But when you call me baby ?

? I know I'm not the only one ?

? Ooh, and I know, and I know,
and I know, I know ?

? And I know, and I know, know ?

? I know I'm not the only one ?

[ Cheers and applause ]

Good job.
Whoo!

Great job.

Very good.

Wow, he's so good.

Yeah!

? This is "The Voice" ?

Daly: Welcome back.

[ Cheers and applause ]

And now with "Almost Is Never
Enough," here's Hello Sunday.

???

? I'd like to say
we gave it a try ?

? I'd like to blame it
all on life ?

? And maybe
we just weren't right ?

? But that's a lie,
but that's a lie ?

? And we can deny it
as much as we want ?

? But in time
our feelings will show ?

Yeah!
? 'Cause sooner or later ?

? We'll wonder why we gave up ?

? The truth
is everyone knows ?

? Knows ?

? Almost ?

? Almost is never enough ?

? It's never enough, babe ?

Oh, my God.
? We were close to
being in love ?

? So close ?

? If I would have
known that ?

? That you wanted me ?

? The way I wanted you ?

? Babe ?

? Maybe we wouldn't be ?

? Two worlds apart ?

? But right here
in each other's arms ?

? Each other's arms ?

? And we almost ?

? We almost knew ?

? What love was ?

? But almost
is never enough ?

? Ooh ?

? Almost is never enough ?

[ Chuckles ]

[ Cheers and applause ]

Whoo!

???

Yeah.

You guys sounded so good.

[ Cheers and applause ]

Yeah, great job.

Alex has to be s-standing here
right now going, "Really?

You had to put me against
the two cutest girls

in the entire competition?"

I'm sweating a bit.
[ Laughter ]

Alex, that surprised me, to sing
that song the way you did.

You had a great pocket. I just
thought it was really good, man.

Thank you so much.
Your problem right now

is Hello Sunday.

Every time you get onstage,
I have noticed

that it gets
a little better,

it gets a little tighter,
you get a little more relaxed,

and then you did that whatever
those jazzy notes at the end --

I heard John over
here go, "Yeah!"

[ Laughter ]

Right up his alley, so...
I got to say, I would probably

go with Hello Sunday
on this one.

Thank you.
[ Applause ]

There are moments, Hello Sunday,
where you're very creative

with the way you
harmonize together.

It's unconventional,
and it's really fun to watch.

Both: Thank you.

John: But, Alex, you really did
surprise us.

Thank you.
I hadn't seen you perform

this well yet,
and it was thoroughly great.

You approached it with
a subtlety and a taste level

that was very impressive
for me.

I would lean a little bit more
toward Alex

after that performance.
Thank you so much.

[ Applause ]
Oh, man.

I admire Kelly for turning
for Hello Sunday

because you're just so
interesting and so different.

I'm so curious to see
what you're gonna do next,

and there was a run
that you did -- it blew me away.

I was like, "T-That is a woman
singing that."

Like, an older woman.
Like, what?

Both: Thank you.

Gwen: Alex, it was just was,
like, getting better and better

and better to the point
where you were like,

"I'm just gonna show you
everything I got

in this performance."

It made you stick out
for the first time for me,

so congratulations on that.

If I had to choose, I would have
to say Hello Sunday

'cause it's so original
and so different.

Daly: Thank you, Coaches.
Thank you.

This was a hard one
for me, y'all.

Alex, you made it
sound effortless.

And the fact that you're
confident enough to end

that song
in your low kind of tone --

it's why I fell in love
with you.

I love your range.
Then you have Hello Sunday.

I never know what you're gonna
show up with at rehearsal,

and it made Taylor cry.

It is very moving,
and Taylor was right.

Not just 'cause you're 14, it's
just incredible what you do.

You literally come to
rehearsals, and I'm like,

"Okay." I'm like, "I'm supposed
to coach you, right?"

I could pick either
one of y'all. You're so great.

Tough one, Kel.
It is so tough.

Who is the winner of
this knockout?

[ Groans ]

I can't not see
where it's gonna go.

???

The winner of this knockout
is Hello Sunday.

[ Squeals ]
Hello Sunday!

Winner in the knockout!

Ow. [ Laughs ]

Congratulations.

[ Applause ]

Congratulations.

Ahh!

Kelly: The only reason why I
ended up going with Hello Sunday

over Alex -- they come back with
these crazy, amazing harmonies

that no one does.

When y'all nail it, it is
the most amazing thing ever.

-Thank you.
-Thank you.
-Yes.

I cannot wait to see
what Hello Sunday does

in the playoffs.

???

I'm just excited,
grateful.

Both: It's amazing.
[ Laughs ]

Coaches, let me remind you,
Alex is available to steal.

Alex, anything you want to say
to Kelly?

I expected this to be
a really fun experience,

but I didn't expect to have,
like, the level of connection

and mentorship that I got
out of it, and I just --

I really appreciate everything
I've learned.

Aww, so sweet.
You're so great.

Give it up for Alex Guthrie,
ladies and gentlemen.

[ Cheers and applause ]

Oh, come on, come on, come on,
come on.

[ Whoosh ]
Yes!

Daly:
Wait, Alex, don't move!

Yes! I love you!
That's the sound of a steal...

Thank you!
...from John Legend!

Yes! Yes!
Alex just got stolen!

Great job.

John: I liked Alex before,
but in the knockout,

he really came
with his "A" game.

I really felt like we can do
some great things together.

I think he's great
for Team Legend.

When Hello Sunday does
what they're supposed to do,

it's magical, and I was like,
"He doesn't deserve to go home."
I love them.

Still in it!

I'm still here.

That makes me happy!

[ Chuckles ]
'Cause they're both here.
