The Odyssey (1992–1994): Season 3, Episode 11 - No Holds Barred - full transcript

(apprehensive music)

- The doctors said I was in a coma.

Maybe I was,

but there is a world beyond consciousness

that they know nothing about.

(intense music)

But when I came back,

nothing was quite the same

and I couldn't leave
that other world behind.

My odyssey continues.

(cars hum)

(light music)

- It's him, my dad.

- What, you think I made him up?

- Everyone thought I did.

I guess this finishes off you and my mom.

- Well, that's my problem.

Why don't you go in and speak to your dad

then we'll figure out how
we're gonna break this

to your mom?

- Wait.

How'd you find him?

- Well, in my business,

you sometimes run into dead beats.

So I know people that track them down.

- You told them my dad was a deadbeat?

- I told them I was seeing this woman

and her husband ran out on her and her son

and he was behind on the support payments.

- That's not true.

He has his reasons.

(intense music)

You don't know.

- Sneak attack, Finger?

You say those words
together it makes sense.

We shoulda been ready for it.

- No way.

We never figured he'd be ready so soon.

- Medea warned you.

He's fighting for his life.

- What are we gonna do?

- We can still beat him.

We'll be ready for him next time.

- If it was just me and him.

I could play the hero.

I just can't ask other kids
to make that sacrifice.

(car horn honks)
- [Guy] Hey dude, wake up.

(intense orchestral music)

(people talk indistinctly)

- [Woman] This better be good.

- [Man] I know it will be good.

- What am I gonna tell him?

We got beat before the fight even started.

- Whatever you say, don't wimp out.

We can't fall apart.

- We lost one battle, not the war.

- Finger hasn't even declared war

and look what he's done.

- It was a sneak attack.

The good news is

the incredibly bravery of our troops.

- Forget bravery.

Whose fault was it?

- Those kids were set up
like rabbits in a trap.

We wanna know who's responsible.

- What good does it do to blame anyone?

- That's easy for you to say.

You don't have a club to take care of.

- We have a right to know.

- Don't you see?

Finger's trying to scare
us, to split us up.

- Who made you the big leader anyway?

- I didn't see you rifting
your tights in the front line.

- The only reason they listen to you

is because we told them to!

- So, either you come up with a new plan,

or we come up with a new leader.

- Get over it, Jay.

Instead of worrying about the last battle,

you have to prepare for the next one.

- But we need more time.

- You don't have time.

You have to bluff him.

Make Finger think that the Alliance

is stronger than it is.

- But Styrene, Cork and
Thor, they're ready to bail!

- Now that they know
there's a price to pay.

- I'm sick of being
everyone else's fall guy.

- Well, kids don't wanna blame themselves.

Don't make the mistake of thinking

that your allies are your friends.

- [Alpha] Are you sure
you're not hallucinating?

- Positive.

This is not coma part deux.

- [Alpha] Well, if your dad's

right across the street,

why are you talking to me?

- You gotta help me.

I don't know what to say to him.

- He's your dad.

Why not start off with, "Hi, Dad"?

- Oh, sure.

I'll say, "Hi, Dad," then
he'll say, "Hi, Jay,"

then he'll look at me and say,

"God, Son, you're getting big.

"Great to see you."

- See, I told you you could do it.

It's easy.

- It's easy for you because
your dad's always been there.

You don't have to say,
"Great to see you, Dad.

"Where have you been for seven years."

- [Alpha] Give yourself a break, Jay.

You don't have to hit
him with the heavy guns

right off the top.

You can work up to that.

- How do I know he'll
stick around that long?

(melancholy music)

(intense music)

- [Fractal] Finger?

Finger?

- Can't you see I'm busy?

- I'm surprised you have
time for this recreation.

- [Finger] No, Fractal.

You should keep in better shape.

In these times of crisis, you have to know

how to defend yourself.

- You call this museum piece defense?

There are some very
interesting new developments

in my laboratory.

- [Finger] Lately I find
cold steel more reliable

than your technology.

- But the possibilities are so limited.

This requires a personal proximity

that is antithetical to an
efficient modus operandi.

- Fractal, you're missing the point.

I like the personal touch.

It comes straight from the heart.

It's a basic instinct.

You're heartless.

Besides, I heard you were
having second thoughts

since you offered your
bookish little friend,

Alpha, sanctuary.

- She's a great mind, Finger.

Don't underestimate her.

- I'm sure she is.

Go back to your bunsen burner, Fractal.

(Savage chuckles menacingly)

See, the thing about brains is,

when it comes to winning,

genius is greatly overestimated.

Don't go.

- [Alpha] Why?

What do you want?

- I know we've had our
disagreements, Alpha.

- You destroyed the entire contents

of my dead letter office.

All the knowledge I've
worked so hard to preserve.

- Yeah, well,

now, we find ourselves

on the same side of another issue.

You and only you

can help stop the total war

that Jay and his alliance committed to.

- You started it.

- That hardly sounds
reasonable for a pacifist.

How can you justify

the continued maiming
and butchering of kids?

(intense music)

- A peace offer?

Are you on his side now?

- Jay, I'm not taking his side.

Finger figured I was one of the people

that could get through to you.

Consider the alternative!

Just look at the offer.

- Why don't you just tell me what it says?

- Cause I haven't seen it.

I'm only the messenger.

(intense music)

- Look at this.

It's not even addressed to me.

"Brave leaders of the alliance."

- "Too much damage has been done already.

"We must settle this
little squabble quickly

"or I will not be responsible
for the consequences."

- See, kids don't wanna be responsible.

- Seems pretty clear to me.

What's there to talk about?

- Oh, really?

What's your answer, then?

- We meet with him.

What's the harm in talking?

- Yeah, right,

like you'd sit down and
talk with a rattle snake.

Well, maybe you would.

- Hey, there's no reason to knock Styrene.

- She's right.

We all have a say in this.

- I say we can't give into him.

- Who says we're giving in?

We make a list of
demands and we negotiate.

- Yeah, sure, me and
Jay drop by The Tower,

have a chat with Finger.

I don't think so.

- Me neither.

- 'Cause I don't remember
Finger saying anything

about talking to you.

- [Styrene] Specifically.

- Two of you even said
Finger can't be trusted.

- Sure he can.

If he's handcuffed.

- Inside a trunk.

- Under 40 feet of water.

- Finger didn't have to make this offer.

He coulda just decided to
kick our butts some more.

So I say we send Cork and Styrene.

- No way!

Jay's our leader.

He has to go.

- No, Flash.

If they think they can do a
better job for The Alliance,

let them go.

- Jay.

What's going on with you?

- It's okay.

I never meant this to be a one-man show.

- [Flash] So, what's the big deal?

You don't wanna talk to the jerk?

- I know, but he's my dad, I should.

If you really believed that,

you wouldn't be calling me.

- I don't know.

It's too weird.

- It's simple.

Seven years ago, the guy walks out on you.

- [Jay] Right, and I had to hunt him down.

- Now what?

He's gonna want you to
forget that he ditched you.

If I did that--

- I'd bury you.

- Trust me.

The only good thing that's
gonna come out of this

is that you know you
weren't nuts all along.

Though you sure had me convinced.

- Ha-ha, very funny.

- All right, so it's not a joke,

but if my dad came back
after all this time,

I wouldn't even cross the street

to tell him to get lost.

Just hang up at meet me at the Jay Planet.

- Uh-uh, I can't.

(light music)

- [Lila] So, what'll it be?

- Surprise me.

- What if I pick something
that you don't want?

- Whatever you pick will be fine.

I never realized how easy
it is not to make decisions.

- All right, then.

One gunk dejeuner coming up.

- Oh, come on, it's lunch time.

- Order takeout.

Look at this.

Our list of demands.

- Those bozos, how could they forget it?

- I found it in a ditch
by the road to The Tower.

I don't think they lost it by accident.

I knew we couldn't trust Cork and Styrene!

- They're planning on selling us out.

Thanks, Lila,

but just get us a couple of
your best sandwiches to go.

We're dining at The Tower.

(swords clink)

- [Finger] Yes, what is it?

- Our scouts report the
delegation from The Alliance

is on the way.

(Finger cackles)

And when they arrive,

they'll discover that things

aren't exactly as they expected.

Hello!

Goodbye! (cackles)

- Savage.

You're always in such a hurry.

- But what are we waiting for?

- First, we sign the peace treaty

so it looks all nice and fair.

Then, on the way home,

the delegates have an
unfortunate accident.

- A fire.

I'm good at fires.

(Finger chuckles)

No, a rock slide.

We can make a really good rock slide.

Bury all the evidence.

- I was thinking more like a flood.

- Good one!

Innocent victims.

But how do we start a flood?

(dastardly music)

- Styrene!

Cork! (laughs)

You can't imagine how nice it is

to have these negotiations
with reasonable people, hm?

Quite a change from Jay
and his headstrong helper.

- Dinner is served.

- What a change from gunk dejeuner.

I could get used to this.

- I think we all know
what's going down here.

Let's get to the point.

- Doesn't anybody savor betrayal anymore?

- All right, where is he?

- In there.

- I'll go get him.

- No!

He had years to make up his mind.

Why are you forcing me
to decide this second?

- Somebody has to do something.

- What do you know about it?

- I'm your friend.

Just because I haven't lived your life

doesn't mean I can't care about you.

(intense music)

- Blank paper.

From your office.

This should fix the
damage Finger has done.

Look at this!

- [Alpha] What is it?

- It's not blank anymore!

- How'd you do it?

- It's called total recall.

It will restore all the knowledge deleted

by the total wipeout.

All the words are located
in this dictionary here

and this mnemonic device generates them

on the paper where they belong.

- "Not your country, do ask
for you, can do but what"?

- So, they're not exactly
in the right order.

It's merely a first approximation.

- Come here!

Maybe you can make sense of this.

(apprehensive music)

- [Fractal] Alpha.

- Jay?

Flash?

- [Fractal] What are you doing here?

- We need your help.

- Finger's up to something
with Cork and Styrene.

- Didn't I explain it to you?

They're making peace.

- No, they're cooking up a conspiracy.

- I got a bad taste in my mouth.

- [Alpha] Your demands?

- Alpha, if Finger finds them--

- Fractal, you mollusk, grow a spine.

Given Finger's previous record,

we'd better check this out.

(intense music)
(Finger cackles)

- [Finger] Who would
have guessed that a fight

could be such good, clean fun.

Now, you boys better hurry.

You wanna be waiting for Cork
and Styrene on their way home.

(cackles) And they were
worried about their weapons.

They're gonna wish they
brought their snorkels.

- Aren't you glad the
alliance didn't send us?

- I can't believe I was such a dope.

Finger planned to kill off
the leaders one by one.

- Why am I not surprised?

- [Alpha] What are you doing here?

- I'm here to take him away

before he does something stupid.

- [Alpha] How would you
know the difference?

- Jay, you don't need to talk to your dad.

What you already know is

he wasn't there when you needed him.

He's just gonna mess with your head.

- Whose dad are we talking
about, yours or mine?

(light piano music)

(moves into intense orchestral music)

- [Finger] Now take your time, Cork.

I think you'll see the
treaty is most generous.

It gives you everything we discussed.

- [Cork] What about Thor?

I feel like I owe him something.

- Good, we're not too late.

- It's up to you,

but I think of the world like a big pizza

and there's only so much
cheese to go around.

- [Cork] So we cut him in.

- [Styrene] Let's cut him out.

But where's Cupid, cute is overrated.

- Then there's nothing more to discuss.

(intense music)

- Those guys would sell their
souls for a slice of pizza.

Let's get outta here.

- Wait.

- For what?

They deserve whatever Finger dishes out.

- They may be scum, but they are scum.

They betrayed us, they
have to answer to us.

- So, what's your plan?

(intense music)

What am I, Zorro?

- You can't let him slip
out of your life again.

If he goes, it's because
that's what you want.

You have to decide.

- And right now.

(light music)

- Dad, stop!

Hold it right there.

- Jay, Flash.

Unexpected, but I like surprises .

- No surprises here.

You're all a bunch of rodents.

Dad, where are you going?

- Jay!

Well (chuckles).

Look at you.

(dramatic music)

I've been waiting a long time for this.

- Me too.

- I'm sorry.

I wish I could have come back sooner.

- No one else believes that you're alive.

- Well, you know that wasn't my choice.

You know that.

- What about now?

Were you gonna walk away?

After all that time,

you couldn't wait an hour for me?

(intense music)

(swords clink)

Hold it right there.

- (laughs) What's the matter?

Isn't this what you wanted?

Just you and me, one on one?

(Jay grunts)

Savage, where are you?

- [Jay] This is the time, Finger!

(Jay grunts)

- You're so pathetic, Jay.

To quote our mutual friend, Medea,

"Only a blockhead fights
when he can't win."

- Jay, look behind you!

- Ow!

- Sorry, Sir.

Only blockhead believes he
can see into the future.

- Go on.

Finish me off.

If you've got the guts.

- I've got the guts.

After what you tried to do,

pushing around the kids,

making them afraid of you,

making them your slaves,

you deserve to be finished off.

- Shut up and do it already.

- Fist it to him, Jay!

He can't do it.

- He's a wuss.

- The Alliance is taking over The Tower.

The worst thing for you will be

to learn how to live like a regular kid.

- Just finish me off!

- That would be too easy.

You've got too much to answer for.

- [Jay's Dad] I don't know
that I have all the answers

but we can try to find a few of them.

- [Jay] Does this mean
you're back for good?

(intense music)

("Closing Theme")
