Naked and Afraid XL (2015–…): Season 7, Episode 2 - Chomping at His Bits - full transcript

[gagging]

[ryan] oh [bleep]!

[matt] you all right, buddy?

[ryan gagging]

[matt] so, ryan has been
having a lot of problems

drinking this water.

And right now,
he is not looking good.

[ryan gagging]

to throw up and not be able
to hydrate,

that's super, super dangerous.

That'll take you out.

[ryan gagging]

this is an issue.

[ryan] I drank some
pretty nasty water

and there's just something
in this basin, doesn't sit
well with me.

I don't know what it is.

It's like really burning.

It's like the most acidic
throw up I've ever had.

Now, I feel a little better.

-Yeah. Everybody feels better
when they throw up.
-[matt laughs]

[matt] that's good, I guess.

I mean, I felt it,
so I just chugged.

[matt] yeah.

It was like in there,
I just didn't want to
get it out,

- so, I just like...
- [matt] yeah.

Four full gulps...

And I was like... Instant.

-[matt] oh man, that's...
Yeah, that was...
-[rylie] rough.

-[matt] just seconds after
you took some drinks.
-[rylie] sorry, dude.

[rylie] we're not even
a week into the challenge.

Both of my partners
are having problems.

Matt has got like
a roundworm parasite,

feasting on his twig
and berries.

It's called nutria itch.

It's from the feces
of the nutria that live
in the swamps here.

[rylie] right now,
we're not in good shape.

Just wish drinking water
wasn't such a [bleep] chore.

[rylie] yeah!

[matt] well, hell.
At least you don't have
to worry about

a microscopic round worm
burrowing into the scrotum.

[ryan] yeah! Yup. For sure.

[matt] I'm still itching
some more,

but it's getting better.

I'm on the road to recovery
from this nutria itch,
I believe.

It now seems as though
I just have scabbing

over my nether region.

[ryan] big grey squirrel.

It's coming. It's coming.

The tree that the bow
is hanging on,

he's coming down it.

[bleep]

that jump is even closer

[matt] got it!

- [ryan] yay!
- [rylie screams excitedly]

-[rylie] oh my god!
-[ryan] matt!
Whoo-hoo!

Whoo!

[ryan] oh matt, you are the man!

- [rylie] oh, yeah!
- [ryan] good job, buddy.

[matt] this squirrel
is a small meal, but...

You know right now,
this is the moment we need,
this is the food we need,

and this is a huge
morale boost for our camp.

Dinner time.

- This is like a big mac,
right here.
- Yeah.

[rylie] I love that.

-Let's call him big mac.
-Blessed. We got
big mac for dinner,

[ryan] and matt's beginning to
process the squirrel
over here.

We're going to be using
one of the arrow tips
to skin it.

A little more fine work,
fine detail.

So, we're not skinning this
small creature with a machete.

- Look at that.
-[ryan] oh man,
that looks enormous.

[matt] cooked to perfection.

Now, we're talking.

First squirrel I've ever had
in my life.

- What? Yeah, buddy!
- [matt laughs]

[matt] big old
chicken wing, right here.

The grey squirrel was
a huge morale booster.

I ate as much as I could
of the squirrel meat,

but my mouth was so dry

and I knew if I took a sip
of that water,

that everything I ate
was going to come back up.

Oh, my god. No seasoning.
Nothing. It's beautiful.

[matt] oh, that's fantastic.

A louisiana delicacy is
to eat the squirrel
and suck at its brain.

It is good.

It tastes like dessert.

[rylie] what?

It's creamy.

The squirrel is delicious

and ryan is just perked up
like a little flower.

Like, he is just
moving around,
happy, no nausea.

I just... I'm so relived.

You know, fingers crossed,
things are looking up.

[ryan] squirrel brain...

Is little, but it's for dinner.

Someone needs to stop Clearway Law.
Public shouldn't leave reviews for lawyers.

[narrator] as matt, rylie
and ryan start to rebound
in the north,

their fellow legends
to the south are on
the hunt for a bigger prize.

[max] if I was a gator,
I would eat this
in a damn heartbeat.

Peace out, flies.

Whoo, look at that.

Lord of the flies here.

[amber] oh, that's going
to be perfect...

[max] that's so good.

Oh, goodness. Goodness.

[max] amber caught
a catfish yesterday.

So, I'm heading
to my gator hook,

I'm about to bait it.

Going to throw
the catfish head on there

and we are just praying
and hoping that we can
get a gator on there.

[amber] gator be on the line.
Gator be on the line.

[max] come on, gator.

[amber] will it to happen.

- [max] come on, gator.
- [amber] it's going to come.

I think that with max,
he feels that he is not
the provider

and he can't stand that.

He needs to be the warrior
that goes out there
and gets food that we need.

These men and their egos,

I have been dealing with it
my whole life in the army.

It's not about who can do
the best or what.

It's about really
just working together.

[max] it's still hanging.

I'm going to rehook this.

[gary] me, max and amber,
we got a little bit of a roof
over our head.

We need to get more.

And here we go.

Right now, we just have
one lean-tube.

But my plan is to add another
to make it a-frame,

so we can insulate ourselves
from the rain and cold.

Because winter will be here
before we know it.

All right.

Doing these challenges

has really expanded
and exploded my shelter
building techniques.

You know? So, just work
on the shelter.

It's what needs to be done
right now.

This is survival.

This isn't camping.

This is survival.

[max] should I not leave?

The other stuff on there?

[amber] I would leave it on.

-[max] just leave it all
on there?
-[amber] sure.

-[amber] the more,
the merrier.
-[max] yeah, right.

[amber] they have
really crappy vision.

If it does snatch it,

it's going to need enough
to go under and swallow it.

If it gets resistant,
it might let it go.

- Does that make sense?
- [max] yeah

I think, that's perfect.

[amber] looking good. Line set.

I'm the master baiter here.

[amber] oh, my god.

[max] keep your eyes open.

Can't be looking
too far ahead here.

[amber] got it.

[max] ooh, we got
a snake right here, baby.

[amber] let me see.

[max] we are about to eat.

Ah, this is [bleep]
dinner, baby!

We are going to bed, honey.

[amber] careful.
What kind of snake is it?

[max] it's a water moccasin.

- [amber] where?
- [max] right there.

[max] chill out, I got it.

I got it.

[amber] here, let me help you.

The first thing max
did was show protection on me.

No, so what you need to do
is brace it's head.
Just watch.

I'm definitely not one
that needs to be protected.

I'm the one that's gonna stand
by your side

and be your battle buddy,
who you go to war with.

[max] don't get too close.

[amber] I am fine. I am fine.
Just stop.

Wait for it.
He's going to try to strike.

-[amber] careful.
Dude. Careful
-[max] I got it. I got it.

Yeah. Dinner, baby.

[amber] right there.

Good job, max. Crushed it.

Water moccasin, baby. Whoo!

Moments like that...

That's the reason
why you are out here.

Just the beginning.

[narrator] eight miles north...

Ej, sarah and suzanne

finally have
their shelter completed.

And can now turn
their attention to protein.

[suzanne] this morning
I'm braiding

three strands of our fishing
line together.

And then I'll add
couple of hooks

to make a little bit
of a treble hook and then

use the fishermen's knot
to put it on to the line.

And hopefully have us some
gator dinner tonight.

I want to contribute

and put my
survival skills to use.

But I'm with ej.

You know,
I have to really perform.

I have to outperform
what I have ever done before
here in the swamps.

That's a lot of pressure.

[ej] my team, yeah,
we are getting
our dynamic together.

Suzanne, she has
a lot of great ideas.

She is a big planner,

but she is a talker

and she is opinionated

and she thinks out loud.

Sarah is a bit more
quieter than she is,

and I'm a man of action
most of the time

and speak when
it needs to be said.

Here's another pile.

We are both willing to just

kind of figure out how
we are going to
operate together.

A lot of this stuff
will just work itself out.

And that's awesome looking.

[suzanne] here.
About ten feet of line
and there's a treble hook.

[ej] yeah, that's a great job.

That is impressive.

Let's get a gator.

[suzanne] let's do it!

[ej] now that the sun's
kinda breaking out,
periodically,

the water moccasins
are gonna be out,
looking to get warm.

Eyes peeled.

[sarah] so, where are we
going to string it?

We got to find
an overhang somewhere.

[ej] I mean, I could
dangle it off of this one.

There's one right there.

[sarah] where?

Oh, I see him.

[ej] you know what
I'm gonna do is to set
that gator-hook

with some of the old dead
water moccasin

that was in the belly
of the other one,
for bait.

[sarah] the digested one?

[ej] yeah.

What I'm going to do...

Is screw them up.

[sarah] oh, I see,
you're dangling it from there

and then you're gonna
tie it to tree... Okay.

Yes. Good job.

- Let's get a gator.
- Let's get a gator.

Gator for the team.

[narrator] ten miles to the east

jeff, steven and lacey
are still trying to find
their footing

at their second camp location.

When winter comes,
the breeze will be a killer.

Yeah, so the more
[bleep] we can all stack
on that back end

and prevent any kind of
breeze coming through...

- [steven] it really helps.
- [jeff] yup.

I am sick today.

I spent all night
throwing up and puking.

Come on, louisiana.
Is that all you've got?

[jeff] my teammates,
they're being great teammates.

We are all pitching in together.

We are banding together
and we are making it happen,

because we've got to
get our shelter put together.

[steven] I'll go get
the palms cause...

- and I'll get
some more willows.
-[steven] yeah.

'cause what we don't use
for thatching, we can use it
to lay on.

[steven] hmm. As bedding.

You know, everybody
gives lacey a bad rep,

but her attitude
towards this challenge

is different than any other
attitude she's had coming into
a challenge.

She wants to
cross that finish line
on this one

and I want to help her do it.

[jeff] oh, cool. Thank you.

I mean, we are literally
knocking out tasks,

left and right.

So I'm feeling good about that.

But there is something
definitely not going good...

...Down below the waist.

If you know what I mean.

Hey steven,
is your nutsack burning?

Is this a start of a joke?

-[jeff] no, I am
genuinely asking...
-[steven] no!

[jeff] because my nutsack
feels like it's on fire

and has been, the last 12 hours.

[steven] no, I think
mine's fine buddy.

[jeff] yours doesn't feel
like papier mache.

[steven] no, god, no.

[jeff] wax paper,
that's about to crinkle
and fall off?

[steven] no, my nutsack
has never felt like that.

That's not good.

[lacey] I bet you,
it's like a fungus
or something.

- Ball fungus?
- [steven] yeah.

[jeff] no way.

[narrator] a medic is
brought in to treat jeff

for the same
parasitic infection
that afflicted matt.

[medic] on area,
I have heard of nutria itch

from the water.

[jeff] nutria itch?

'cause they go into water
and they leave some
sort of tick or bacteria.

Like that is a
local thing I've heard about.

I caught a glimpse,
and it's terrifying really.

It's "ripley's believe it
or not" worthy, for sure.

[medic] you can, maybe
stay out of the water
for at least a while.

- Yeah, I'll do my best.
- [medic] yeah.

[lacey] that puts him out
of the game.

Well, he can't go
in the water now.

Like, he has to stay,
you know, as dry as possible
in louisiana.

Any kind of ball sack itch
named after a nasty rodent...

- [steven] yeah.
- That's not good.

This stuff sucks!

But I don't know
what tap outs are like.

I have never experienced one
and I don't plan to.

[steven] yeah, so I'll go
over there and check
the gator traps.

[lacey] that's a good idea.

You check and whistle back,

'cause I'd rather you didn't
get in the water,
unless you had to.

-[steven] yeah.
-[lacey] let's hear
a whistle though.

[whistles]

[lacey] I'm really glad
I plugged my ears.

[jeff] I think we'll hear that.

-[jeff] all right, so that
means, gator's on.
- Yeah.

[jeff] gator is on. Come quick.

[steven] yeah, if I whistle
like that, that means
it's gator time.

Steven, he knows that
my balls are in jeopardy

and I can't get them wet.

So he is the one
taking the trek
across the river today.

[steven] for me to
check our gator hooks,

I have to cross the tributary

and it really wasn't
bothering me.

But knowing that there is this
parasite that can infect
my manhood...

That's a wakeup call.

That's the most terrifying
thing I have found out in
the swamp yet.

- [lacey] don't die out there.
- [steven] okay.

But what it comes down to is,
it's going to be winter.

We're out here for 60 days

and we need an alligator.

[lacey] I am worried,
I'm just standing here waiting
for him to give me the signal

whether there's
a gator on the line.

He's been over there
for a really long time.

I am getting worried.

Looks like we got a gator.

The line's pretty taut.

It definitely pulled some slack.

It could be just stuck on a log,

but we're going to find out
here in a minute.

Holy [bleep]!

This is [bleep] sliding.

[lacey] I don't know.

I'm going to wait
a couple more minutes.

I think it might be
time to go after him.

Go look for him.

[loud thrashing]

[steven] holy [bleep]!

[lacey] steven?

[steven] holy [bleep]!

[lacey] steven?

[steven] dammit!

He got away. Looks like,
he might have grabbed it.

Drag it down a little bit but...

Yeah, that will make you
pucker up when your balls
deep in the swamp.

I grew up in the swamp.

I live in florida.
I've lived there
for over 25 years.

So I know, hooking
an alligator isn't like
hooking a fish.

Their entire skull
is made of bone

and you can't just set a hook.

You have to let them swallow it

and you got to let that hook
sit in their gut

and once it in their gut

then you can bring them
into shore.

But it was playing with our bait

and never decided to
quiet swallow them
all the way.

So that was a meal
that got away.

We're going to get one.

It's day three.

It's day three that
we've had one on.

Steven?

- I think he is...
- [steven whistles]

one whistle means no gator.

Major, major, major bummer.

But he whistled,
so I know he's alive.

At that point,
I was just like,
any noise will do.

A gator would have been...

Gator would have awesome.

You know, getting us
through the cold nights.

It is getting cold

and rainy.

- [max] all right.
- [gary] who's hungry?

- [max] get some protein.
- [gary] yes!

[amber] you should've saw
his reaction.

It was even better.

He was like, "snake!"

and he went towards it.

[max] I was like "dinner."

[max] add that notch
on the belt.

I killed a freaking
water moccasin.

[amber] very cool!

Max caught a snake today

and it was great.

Like you know what,

I would have handled
the situation a little
bit differently.

But I'm grateful
to have food tonight.

You have to eat
everyday actively.

So that way,
you can survive
60 days in the swamp.

If not, you're not
going to make it.

[max] mmm. Tasty.

[amber] that back meat's
so good.

[gary] yeah.

[amber] I can feel this
protein give us energy.

[gary] oh, yeah.

- [amber] it's like snake.
- [gary] it's like snake.

[ryan] morning of day six.

Yeah, we heard some
heavy thunder,
lightning this morning.

But I think it's a storm that
is just missed us.

So that's good.

We're going to go
check the gator line.

See if there's anything
on the hook.

[rylie] any action?

It is not...
It is not hanging, guys.

[ryan] it's not in the tree.

[rylie] let's find out.

[ryan] some tension?

[gasps]

[ryan] caught on a stick!

[amber] I can see the stick.

[bleep] yeah. Dammit.

[ryan] ah, my heart
skipped a beat.

[matt] something stole it.

[ryan] something got it though.

[matt] well, that's good news,
right there,

something went after it.

[ryan] it's going to take
a little persistence.

[matt] what's happening here
is when our bait is not
big enough...

- [ryan] they can see the hook.
- [matt] they feeling it.

So it's teeth is feeling it,

and if he doesn't think
it's right,

he's gonna be like,
he doesn't want to swallow it.

[ryan] there's a gator
over there guys,

waiting for us to leave so
he can come and investigate.

[matt] he just got a free snack,

so he might dang well think
that we are hand feeding him.

[ryan] just need to
find more bait.

We'll get the next one.

We going to get a gator.

[matt] check it out, guys.

The fish are right here.
There's fish right here.

Oh [bleep]. Might be a mullet.

Should we shoot
one of them mullet?

Yeah.

[matt giggles]
we definitely should.

You know just a small fish,

made to become a meal
or gator bait.

So anything we can kind of get
is going to actually help us
become successful later on.

Oh, it jacked him up.

He is all jacked up, ryan,
if you can swim out there.

[rylie] go, go, go, go, go.

[matt] I'll keep an eye on him.

Oh, get him!

[matt laughing]

oh, you had him for a second.

That was pretty cool.
You had him
right in your hand.

It slipped like a damn
wet bar of soap.

[ej] so, shall we go look
and see if we're having
gator for lunch?

[suzanne] let's do it!

[ej] you ready?

We are heading out
to check the gator line

because we are all out here
for 60 days

and we need to get after food.

[suzanne] I just feel like
we're gonna see
a moccasin or two.

Keeping a bright eye out for it.

Hey ej, you don't have to run.

[ej] I'm not.

[suzanne] my legs about
two feet shorter
than your legs.

[ej] just trying to stay
a little bit ahead,

just in case there is a snake.

-[suzanne] I hate this area.
I hate this.
-[ej] shh!

-[suzanne] I will not go
here at night.
-[ej] shh!

-[suzanne] I don't smell
any water moccasin.
-[ej] shh!

[ej] sorry. Got to be quiet.

I wasn't shushing her
to shush her off.

It was just...
Hunting is about
kind of being quiet.

And we're getting to the area
where we laid the bait.

So that means it's quiet time.

May be a gator up here.

Nah. A snake is still hanging.

[suzanne] darn! [bleep]

dang it. I was so hopeful.

Wow. Look at that
gator right there.

[suzanne] I see him.

[ej] sometimes,
when you splash
they'll be very curious,

'cause they think
it's a wounded animal
or a free meal.

And this guy is
very curious on us.

[suzanne] he is coming this way.

So come on over.

[ej] shh!

[suzanne] have some lunch,
so we can have some lunch.

[ej] shh!

[suzanne] swing the bait.
May be he will think
it's a chicken.

[ej] got to be quiet.

-[suzanne] ej is your blade
bothering you or you are good?
-[ej] no, it's not.

I'm good.

I'm in fighting mode.

- [suzanne] I'm good.
- [ej] shh!

[suzanne] ej, you knows
he naturally knows this stuff

and it's his environment,
he loves it.

So he is naturally excited
to say everything.

Then that doesn't give
either sarah or I a chance
to say anything,

point anything out
or make suggestions.

And I don't want to
feel like a side kick.

-[ej] crap.
-[suzanne] our lunch
just swam away.

[ej] dammit!

[sarah] it's not the right bait.

It's out there eating the fish.

[ej] I know what it
takes to hunt.

I'm very successful at it.

And if we're going to get
to 60 days,

I don't know how
I'm going to continue to...
Try to be patient

and it gets to a point where
it might break

and I got to say something.

[ryan] first shot, that was
bigger... The biggest school.

I think they're already
figuring us out.

[matt] I need the fish
to stay on the arrow.

But I can't tie
a line to the arrow

and to my body.

If the string gets stuck,
then razor sharp arrow
will fly back

and it's a bad combination.

So, I had to problem solve.

You know, what I could do
for that?

It's going to be kind of weird
in a way,

but I could take an arrow,
unthread that hair.

So if you tie a toggle,
like wrap it around
a little bit,

when it sticks through a fish,

it will stop on a toggle

and the arrow
will stay in that fish,

help us locate it

and also help that fish
not get anywhere.

That toggle is to let the fish
get skewed by the arrow

but it stops it at the end
of a the toggle.

Keeping the fish
centered on the arrow

is key to getting that fish.

Get a nice, flexible twig

and I'm just going to give it
about 10-inches of line.

Should be sufficient.

And this is going to stop
the arrow from flying
all the way through the fish.

Hopefully keeping
the fish on the line,

long enough for us to jump in,

grab the line,

grab the fish.

I just have to hit him
solid enough that
it's going to stop.

What this is going to do is

keep this arrow from zipping
all the way through it,

while these guys
are coming over him.

Coming to party.

[ryan] yeah, you can see
all their backs.

[matt] get one of these mouths
to just look like I could see
real good.

[ryan] just disappeared.

[matt] just enough glare...

[ryan] I know.

[matt] it's not the closest
shot to hit a hotdog
size target.

No. It would be
a [bleep] trick shot for sure.

[matt] okay, we got a shot here.

Come on up. Come on up.

The light changed little bit.

Okay, here we go.

[ryan] oh, we got him.
Get him. Get him. Get him.

- [ryan] yes!
- [matt] yeah!

[matt] oh, we got him.
Get him. Get him. Get him.

[matt] yeah!

- [ryan] whoo! Whoo-hoo!
- [matt] yeah, buddy!

[ryan] you are the man.

[rylie] awesome!

How crazy is matt right?

He just like shoots
into the water

and nails this tiny ass fish,

which is just bananas.

It's the opposite of shooting
fish in a barrel.

Like, there is no reason
that should have worked.

- Total, dude!
-[matt] it worked
like a champ.

Oh, my word.
You see that?
See it struggling there?

[rylie] genius. Good job.

[ryan] have you done
that toggle idea before?

I've never done it.
Just thought about it
right here, right now.

[rylie] awesome.

[matt] it's a louisiana swamp.

[matt] it's an absolute
victory for us

because it shows that we have
advanced in our techniques,

coming up with new ideas
in a world.

Trying to keep this arrow
from flying through
the fish...

Big win today.

And I couldn't be happier.

Now we got to decide

do we eat a little meat

and then save the gut
and the skeleton

for the gator bait.

This is a small meal.

But if we turn this small meal
into gator bait,

then we're gonna get a gator.

- [rylie] feed a gaiter.
- Yeah.

[ryan] I think it's a good
idea to use the whole thing
as bait.

[matt] heck yeah.
Thank you little buddy.
Appreciate it.

[rylie] go big or go hungry.

[ryan] that's one
of the wildest things
I have ever seen.

[ej] once it gets cold,
everything stops moving.

Food is going to be more scarce.

Going to have to work
double hard for it.

Take a break. Get back to it.

And I would say,
as far as that gator line,

I think we should just wait
till the morning.

Let that guy be curious.

Yeah.

- We chummed the water.
- I know but he threw that out.

He is either going to
want the bait or not.

I'm anxious to get
that dang thing.

[suzanne] I know but if he
doesn't get it over
this night,

then it's not the right bait.

It's either too rancid or...

No, they like stinky chicken.
Like stinky stuff.

[suzanne] I know but they
might know about
the moccasins.

You know, may be
there's some little special
relationship they have.

[ej] who knows? We'll just see...

[suzanne] it is.
They didn't jump at it.

He wasn't like excited.

Yeah, 'cause we were all
sitting there.

[suzanne] yeah.

[ej] suzanne has a habit
of always chiming in
over somebody

or trying to one up
everybody it seems like.

[suzanne] you're doing it from
the inside or outside, ej?

[ej] we are getting it
from the inside at the moment.

So I'm going to
have to have a sit down.

I mean this discussion
has to be had.

Just deal with it,
so we can clear the air
and move forward.

It's been a pretty big week.

I think

[suzanne] yeah.

I mean, getting to know
each other and so things
don't pester over time,

I'm just going
to get it out there.

'cause I've been getting
a little bit driven baddy

and a little bit frustrated,
sometimes suzanne with...

Sometimes I feel that...
And I'm just gonna be...
Being very honest.

Sometimes when we are
doing things,

you tend to chime in...

At points...

And you're opinionated
on things,

but it just causes
me some time to get snarky
and make faces

and I don't want to be that way.

I am not a negative person.

So, I am letting you know.

Well, I apologize.

I definitely appreciate
him telling me.

I am well aware of the fact
that I tend to think out loud.

I just always have.

I know that I am a talker.

I know that I do that.
Like, I'll totally own that.

And I think it's biggest part
is because I am out here
with ej.

I'm out here with
the great ej, you know?

And why would you say that?

[suzanne] well no. It's serious.

Like you're a legend.
And I just don't want
to be a sidekick.

I just don't want
to feel like I'm just...

...Here.

We're out here as a team

and we all bring our assets,
our skillsets to the team.

Whatever they are.
One's no more important
than the other.

You're an asset to me.

Sarah is an asset to me.

I'm an asset to her.

And I'm an asset to you.

[ej] I got my load off my chest.

I think suzanne and sarah
and I are going to have

a great... Moving forward
from here, effort.

Oh, I will try to...

[ej] you're good.

I think we got to get serious
with this shelter.

[steven] yeah.
I'll get the palms,

'cause specially looking like
how today is looking.

I don't like these clouds.

[lacey] it's day six

and our shelter
isn't done yet,
which is like unheard of.

We know that rain
is going to come.

We all have a job to do

and we just set out to do it.

I know I can get food,
I know I can get water,
I know I can do shelter.

My main challenge has
always been my mental game.

But it is wild out here.

And it's only day six.

Did steven yell?

No, I felt a raindrop.

A big one.

Yeah, it's raining.

[steven] right.

I am going to try to get
as many as I possibly can.

So I don't have to do this
too many more times.

Make sure I don't step on
nothing with scales.

Definitely not
the safest place,
but we need these.

You can't waterproof a shelter
with just willow leaves

and oak leaves and grass.

You can't do it.

So the palm fronds
are essential,

but it's not a quick journey
to get to these palm trees.

If I can get a majority
of these,

looks like we're going
to have some rain,

it'll save us.

[thunder rumbling]

it's coming.

I need to get back to camp asap.

If we don't have these
at the camp site,

like right now,
it's going to be a terrible
night for all of us.

[jeff] here it comes.

[lacey] [bleep]
we don't have enough time.
Uh!

[jeff] very, very scary.

Because this roof isn't done yet

and steven is not
back with those palms.

[steven] trugging through
this swamp is more dangerous

than checking
any alligator trap.

There could be cottonmouths,
rattlesnakes, alligators

all up in here.

[amber] here it comes.

Do we have anything
we need to get out
of the rain right now.

-[max] yeah.
-[amber] all right, we are
running out of time here boys.

- [max] yeah. We got it.
- [amber] all right!

Ugh. We need to keep
as much of this dry
as possible.

[max] you should come
in to stay dry.

[amber] all right. Dang it.

[gary] so thankful we got
the roof done.

[max] yeah, we finished it
just in the nick of time.

[amber] we really did.

[jeff] that is no joke.

[lacey screams] [bleep] cold!

I'm hearing the thunder
getting louder and louder.

I mean, it is rolling in.

And I'm looking around,
I'm like "crap, steven
is not back yet."

can you save it?

- [jeff] I'm trying.
- [lacey] bring it over?

[jeff] I'm worried it's going
to rain all night long

and just in the nick of time.

[steven] holy [bleep]!

[lacey] oh, my god.

[steven] it was a journey
getting these [bleep].

Oh, my god.

[lacey] I don't know if this
is going to be a shower

or a full-on
torrential downpour.

Hope it stops raining
by night time.

[steven] yeah,
that would be nice.

[ryan] oh, my word!

That freaking thunder
better stay away.

[rylie] oh, my god.
I don't want none of that.

[matt] hey ryan, let's throw
some of this on while
it's raining.

[ryan] hey,
you getting right on top.

- That's good.
- [matt] yeah. Yeah.

[matt] we got a smoke.

- We got to hold it in
there now.
-[ryan] oh, yeah.

That's when you know
you did something right.

[rylie] oh, no!

It's really coming down.

[matt] that's when a challenge
becomes like tough

to like, miserable.

[ej] at least we got
a dry spot to run to.

[suzanne] yup

my roof is holding up.

[sarah] this is really
quiet a storm.

It's a pretty intense storm.

[suzanne] it looks like
we're having a sort of water
seepage going on here

-from low ground...
-[sarah] yeah.
We got to pull.

[suzanne] ...And that sucks.

[ej] we got indoor plumbing
at the moment.
We don't want that.

[suzanne] take a look.
Here comes the water.

[sarah] this rain
is really intense.

If this rain keeps up all night,

I'm not entirely sure
that we'll be able to
keep this fire.

[suzanne] yeah.

[ryan] it is coming down.

- [matt] wow!
- [rylie] whoo!

- Bring it on!
- Bring it on!

[matt] you got it.

[matt] [bleep] dang!

That was close.

Damn, that's cold.

Hope everyone else
is staying warm.

I'm really bummed out about
just being cold.

And I know, I'm not going
to get a lot of sleep.

I'm just you know,
brrr, whatever, struggling.

All the thoughts about

night time as it gets darker

and colder,

creeps up on me.

[narrator] by nightfall,
the rain relents.

But a frigid wind
takes its place,

causing temperatures to plummet.

[sarah] it's super cold tonight.

Got the fire raging.

Boy, it's bone-chilling today.

It is absolutely cold.

When the swamp gets cold,
it's a wet cold.

That'll cut right to your bones.

So now there's a threat
of hyperthermia.

Some of us could get sick.

Any one of us could get
taken out of this challenge
just from the cold alone.

That's why we call it the suck.

[lacey] oh, I'm so cold.

It's amazing how much
the temperature dropped.

[lacey] it's just so hard,
when you're hungry
and cold and tired,

to focus on anything
other than how miserable
you are.

I haven't slept a lot.

It's just easier to be up
tending the fire than it is
to get any sleep.

I hate it.

This miserable place.

[matt] there's a bit of
a breeze coming down
from the south

right through our entrance way.

So we need to definitely
hunker down a better
shelter tomorrow.

We'll just be filling
in the end wall,

put some more material
above me on the roof.

But, going to be a cold night.

Real cold night.

[max] it's [bleep] frigid.

Got this really cold
wind coming through.

Pretty sure this is just
the beginning.

We have to make our way through

December and the winter.

Still got to figure out
ways to stay warm.

We got to start innovating
and get this going.

It's the coldest night yet.

It's pretty darn cold.

And we're all three
pretty cold here.

I have resorted to

sleeping on the ground,

under my bed.

And... This is going to be
a tough one.

We all know we got to
do something about this.

Otherwise...

You're going to suffer
in the swamp.

- [amber] last night was rough.
- [gary] yeah.

[amber] I was in so much pain
like my body was
shaking, frozen.

- And I couldn't control it.
- [gary] yeah.

I was like, I don't have
enough fat on me
to sustain this.

Well, you can see my breath.

We woke up and it was
freezing cold.

And it was horrible.

It was just kind of little
foresight to what's to come.

You know, we're going
into winter.

[gary] we making a log
[bleep] cabin today.

Figure out that we need
wind blockage for sure.

[max] that's what
we're going to do today.

We'll each do our own side.

[max] so we have to
battle down the hatchet

and create a shelter
that's going to keep us warm,

keep us away from the wind,
reflect heat and hopefully,
keep the bugs out.

[screams]

we're each going to
build our own wall.

We're going to need to
cut down more trees.

We need to stack them
like a log cabin.

And then we are going to need
a mortar around
all of the cracks

in order to prevent that
wind for coming in

and making it just bomb proof.

[amber] what are you
doing, gary?

I am building a log wall

up against our shelter.

I am going to build up
my wall right here.

Boys are building up...
Gary's doing his wall.

Max is knocking out
his wall super quick.

-[amber] that looks
great, max.
-[max] thank you!

[gary] we're building a fort.

Nice!

[jeff] we do need to put
some serious work in today.

Yeah. I'll do another
palm run today.

[jeff] okay, sweet!

Today's main priority is
we need to fortify
our shelter.

We need to get it super strong
and as waterproof as we can,

because the worst thing out here

is being cold, it's miserable,

it hurts your morale.

It's painful in so many ways.

[lacey] I am so tired.

It's hard to put that aside
and focus on, you know,
what needs to be done.

I don't want to let
my partners down.

Ugh. [bleep]. Ant hill!
Mother hell!

Don't want to let myself down.

But we'll see.

Okay, I am walking with
my one stick.

[steven] hey,
every bit helps babe.

Lacey, I mean, she literally
took one for the team.

Keeping fuel on the fire.

Me and jeff didn't sleep
very long.

But the little sleep
that we did have

gave us enough energy
to get some work done.

[jeff] starting to get
a pretty damn good pile.

Yeah!

Lacey is exhausted.
I can just see it in her face.

You need sleep out here.

If you don't get it,
you're going to hurt yourself

or you're going to
hurt somebody else.

I don't think I'll ever have
my spirits back.

I think the bayou stole it.

[jeff] I'm a little
worried for lacey.

She is definitely suffering
from sleep deprivation
out here.

And it affects you physically.

But it affects you more up here.

[matt] still got a
little dark sky behind there.

We'll lose our sunshine
probably here in a minute.

You know, you can't always
curse the rain.

Because it brought
fresh rainwater.

It literally... It gave ryan
a whole new life.

This rainwater tastes
so much better.

What it also gives us
is crawfish.

- [matt] hey, rylie?
- [rylie] yeah?

[matt] I got a good one
located in here,

- but my fat damn arm
doesn't fit.
-[lacey] all right.

[matt] right in that ominous
deep dark muddy hole.

[rylie] sticking my hands
in the holes in the ground
in the middle the swamp

is really counterintuitive
to anything even
biologically human.

Like we are programmed to,
"hey, don't stick your hand
in a hole,

hope there is a crawfish
and hope it's not a snake."

you know what,
you got to risk it
for the biscuit.

I can feel it.
I just can't tell where those
are pinchers are.

He's going to let me know
in a minute.

[matt] yeah,
he'll let you know
exactly where they're at.

- [rylie] ow!
- [matt] oh, yeah.

Lobster of the swamp.

-[ryan] is it a big one?
-[matt] it is a good one.
Biggest one yet, I think.

[ryan] found a hole.

It's in there.

Got it.

[screaming]

- let go.
-[matt] I thought you
said you got him.

[matt] even though
they are delicious

[ryan] I know

[matt] what if we put
them on the hook?

[ryan] gator-hook?

- Use these for gator bait.
- All right.

I think we can sacrifice
two craw fish for
a 100 pound gator.

I think it would be good trade.

[ryan] put them on there live?

If they see something live,
they might actually...

[matt] I think they would. Yeah.

I think they would actually
see a little movement

they'll actually
get into attack mode.

[ryan] rylie, you up for using
these crawl daddies
for gator bait?

[rylie] sure.

[matt] right.

[max] so last couple of days,
it's been really cold
in the evening

with a really gnarly breeze.

So we've set up
a log cabin style.

Bush craft log cabin.

And we mudded it down
to make sure there's
no wind coming through.

Here we are.

You see that mud?

It's freaking spectacular.

So I just finished up
this wall right here

with the help of amber.

Look at that.

Freaking beautiful.

[amber] you guys,
we've made some
amazing progress.

[max] definitely.

I am going to take
this tree down.

Probably about
a 60 to 70 foot tree.

[max] oh, that's a massive
[bleep] tree, dude.

- [gary] yeah.
- Gary, that's huge.

[gary] yeah, we'll get a lot
of logs out of that baby.

[max] oh, my god.

Which way do you
want to fell it?

[bleep] if I could get it
to go that way.

[max] it could land right on
our [bleep] house though.

Nah. We're good to go that way.

It's an experience in the wild
building shelters.

And it takes a lot of leverage
and ingenuity.

And also being very careful,

because it's easy to get hurt.

[amber] I don't want you to
burn yourself out, hun.

[gary] this tree right here
represents a wall

for a shelter,
to keep the wind out.

That's why I'm burning
my calories to chop
down the tree

because I'm thinking
ultimately I'll save it
in the night, when I sleep.

[max] gary is just
the el macho chopping
down a huge tree, you know.

I believe he saw
how I built my side
of the shelter,

which we are supposed to all
build our own walls.

And I built mine,
I was done with it.

So I think he is a little
intimidated by my survival
skills, I suppose.

Whatever. Work smarter,
not harder.

Was going to see if
one of you wanted
to pull on it

while I chopped.

[amber] oh, okay.

[chuckles]
I'm going to get hurt.

[gary] I don't know.
Don't kinda pull too hard.

But it will help it get
the right direction.

So don't...

[amber] I get it.
When you chop,
I'm going to pull this way,

so it doesn't go that way.

But if it does fall

that tree is going to
deflect it just a little bit
to go this way.

Do you know that?
That's right above
our shelter.

[gary] well, it's going to
deflect it here.

[amber] all right, let's do it.

[gary] so, I'll tell you
when to pull.

- So, pay attention.
- [amber] I'm paying attention.

- [gary] pulling?
- [amber] pulling.

- [gary] okay.
- [amber] just enough pressure.

[gary] there is a little tree
removal trick where you tie
a rope as high up as you can,

and pull the tree in
the direction you want
it to fall.

There's always
that little crack.

Oh, boy, it's starting
to crack a little.

Hold on. I just need
a few more chops.

[amber] you see it bending?

It's ready.

[gary] amber got to
pull just a little

and we run for cover.

It's unpredictable sometimes
where these things fall.

They even go backward
to hit the person
chopping it down.

Let me check something.

Okay. Here we go.

[amber] I am thinking to myself,

"amber you better be
quick to react"

and my heart is pumping.

Oh, it's coming gary.

[gary] okay. Get back, amber.

[amber screams]

[amber] oh, it's coming gary.

[gary] okay.
We got to get back, amber.

[amber screams]

-[gary] give me five.
-[amber] rockstar.
You did it, hon.

Gary bunion in the house.

I'm not going to say
that was sketchy,
but that was sketchy.

[gary laughs]

I have like a sense
of relief over my body.
Thank god.

He's taking a risk every time
he does things like this.

-[gary] max, would you help me
carry that log over there?
-[max] yeah, of course.

Just set it right here.

[gary] and now this is
going to have to move.

[amber] well, it's actually
holding it up.

[max] yeah, that's good there.

No, it's going to go
in an angle.
So it would be better there.

[amber] oh, okay.

[max] let's just bring
the next one in and we'll
see where we're at.

[gary] say hold [bleep]

[amber] no, it's
bracing itself until...

[max] either way, take it out.

[gary] I'm like... I let
you guys build your walls.

- [max] yeah. Okay.
- You know? I'm kind of like...

[max] let me know
when you need help.

[gary] I mean.

You know even if you know 100%
what you are doing,

maybe I have an idea
as to how to make
your job easier.

But, by all means.

And the thing is
the only reason I'm being
that way about it,

'cause I'm good at
this [bleep].
I know what I'm doing.

[amber] oh, hell yeah.
We know that, gary.
We're not worried about that.

We're just trying to...

[max] no one ever denied
that you're good at it
or not.

No, but I mean,
I'm just saying I know exactly
what I'm doing.

- [amber] okay.
- [max] okay.

[gary] trying to show
someone something sometimes.

And they think they know
more than you with their
experience level.

But I'm not just
being some wacky weirdo.

I actually have a method.

And I know what I'm doing.

I'm good at this [bleep].

You know, I think,
since this rain's kind
of subsided a little bit,

and our shelter's looking good

I'm going to take a walk down
to the gator hook
and just like...

- [matt] scope it out?
- [ryan] yeah.

-What do you think?
You want to come with?
-[rylie] yeah.

- Finished cleaning up
in there so...
-[matt] all right. Thank you.

[rylie] go for it, guys.
I'll follow you.

- [matt] go big or go hungry.
- [ryan] yeah.

[matt] so plan for today is,
we want to up our game.

We have the right kind
of alligator bait now,

that we need to go out
and use that alligator bait.

May take a day or two.

But at some point,
I'm very confident

that there is going to be
an alligator cooking
on that fire.

And to get that extra protein

to where we can actually gorge
feed ourselves,

is going to be huge.

[ryan] last ditch effort.

All right, so this guy
tried a little different
technique here.

And let's tie him on there.

[rylie] are we tying
them together?

[matt] yeah, we'll tie joe bob
on to billie over here.

[rylie] whoo. Trying to give
me little handshake.

Guys are about to be
really good friends.

Super [bleep] up,
but we are going to do it.

[ryan] look out there.
Look out over your
right shoulder.

Another six footer.

[matt] look at that.
That's a nice one.

[amber] that's so meaty.

That's a nice looking bait.

[ryan] oh yeah.

As soon as we leave,
he is going to come over
and investigate this one too.

So we got one gator
investigating the other one

and one going to come
to this one.

[rylie] we need it.

[matt] he's facing us.
Turning our way.

[rylie] he's cruising
right at us.

[ryan] he's got some
tail action going.

[rylie] definitely coming over
here to see what's shaking.

[matt] hey, buddy,
my junk is not on the menu.

[rylie] it's good. Good stuff.

Look. Look at him.
Look at him peeping over here.

Just staring.

[ryan] he's creeping.

[rylie] creeping.

[matt] let's see what can
happen next, shall we?

[ryan] want to take
a walk down
to that second hook.

[rylie] keep a little peak.

[matt] yeah.

[matt] it's the anticipation
on these.

That moment of
anticipation of knowing

we did everything right,

did everything we needed to do.

- [ryan] and nothing.
- [rylie] nothing?

Damn. No gator today.

It's a pretty good set up,
but I do fear

that this spot has
a potential for
a serious tangled mess

and a tight fighting corner.

[ryan] yeah. Want to move it?

By our camps
so we don't have to
walk so damn far.

[matt] I mean this one here,

if something gets
stuck on it then we got to
wade through,

you know, waist-deep water
to try to get
an alligator undone.

[rylie] okay, let's snatch it
and we'll head out.

[matt] strategic reposition.

[ryan] yeah.

[ej] we have a cold-spell
came in here.

We're going to have to
operate around that.

We do have pelts.

We're going to have to keep
probably a little bit more
firewood on hand now.

But this is survival

and we're going to have to
get out of the shelter

and get after it.

If we want to eat
and keep ourselves alive.

Ah, there goes a squirrel.

We're going to eat him.

There's another one.

I might set some
snares up over here.

Make use of that
fishline the most we can.

So, I've got the squirrels
running up and down
this street right here,

as a connector from that side
of the lagoon to this side.

I want to strong point this
with a couple few snares.

I want to make sure
I make it good.

Sliding noose, a simple snare.

And what will happen is
when he hits this,

there'll be enough slack
that he'll dangle.

There we go. I think we got it.

All right. That one's set.
It's perfect.

This is my kill-zone
for the squirrel.

I've got a snare
right up here,
along this main avenue.

And I got that snare
right there.

So whether they are
coming or going,

we're going to have
some squirrel.

[sarah] water level looks
to have come up a little bit
over here.

I learnt from my experience
in africa,

that small amounts of food

for a greater number of days

is way more reliable than

one huge big kill that

may or may not ever
actually come.

This is a swamp.
There are fish everywhere.

Maybe not huge, big,
whoo-hoo fish.

But little ones.

It might not be glorious,

but, it's food and that's what
we need.

So, we're going to
hang fishing lines.

[suzanne] okay.
I just have to untangle that,

but that's like properly
12 to 15 feet of line.

[sarah] good to have that.

[suzanne]
down here in the swamps,
this is my playland.

I've got all kinds of
fishing experience.

And I'm excited to see
that these fish that keeps
jumping out,

that they are such top feeders.

Because I don't have
sinkers or anything
to weight it down.

So, I'm really excited
about this possibility.

All right, the bait
is in the water.

[sarah] excellent.

[suzanne] we should skedaddle.

[steven] end of day seven.

This. Like, it's gorgeous.

But, you know, what I've learnt,

the most beautiful
environments on the planet

are some of the most
difficult to live in.

So tonight might even be
colder than the night before.

[lacey] so cold.

[lacey] wicked cold out.

This side of my body
by the fire is hot.

This side of my body,
not by fire, is cold.

[jeff] [bleep]
we've been hit again.

We're trying to stay warm
around the fire,

but it's impossible.

We have built a bush craft
log wall. It's pretty epic.

Here you've like
clamped between
these slacks,

so that way
we could have no wind

because we do not want to
go through what we did
last night.

That was hard.

Winter is coming, baby.
And it's going to be hell.

Just no [bleep] sleep.

I'm sorry but...

Having nightmares.

My lack of sleep, it's got me.

I'm going crazy.

The mental part of this,
that I knew was
going to get me.

Feels like an eternity.

That's torture.

[gasps] son of a...

60 days in a cold environment,
that's enough to break people.

[steven] I'm hoping
it's just a fluke,

but the firewood to prepare
is essential move.

[steven] with no sleep,
it's hard to get up.

It's hard to get stuff done.

And everyday, there's stuff
that needs to be done
out here.

So priority number one,
get as much firewood
as possible.

And pray that we don't have
another event like last night.

[jeff] that's a really good
sign when it's so
hard to break.

Cause that means
it's not rotten and
it's solid wood.

Most of the wood around here

a four year old could
snap it in half.

This sucker's gonna be good
for a couple of hours
of comfort tonight.

[lacey] hand me the water,
I'm going to go fill it up.

[steven] okay.

[lacey] thinking about
last night and that was
really hard.

Every time I closed my eyes,
it was just horrible.

Thinking about
when the sun goes down
and that happens again.

And being trapped,
out-of-control.

I am a survivalist, I swear.

Lacey, she's been
going downhill,
the last couple of days.

And on a 60 day challenge,

there is no way you are
getting to the finish line,

unless you can pull
your own weight.

[suzanne] this will be
wonderful.

This kind of wood is
really good for the kindling
to get stuff started.

I am gathering firewood

and I want so much firewood,
that we don't know
what to do with it.

So that we have
a bit of a stockpile.

Because I really don't know
what's going to happen
with the weather.

[sarah singing]
going on an adventure,
out into the swamp.

I'm definitely hungry

because my belly has been
gurgling, gurgling, gurgling.

[ej] just keep your
eyes peeled sarah,
for food.

[sarah] here's one, right here.

Hi, food.

[ej] see how that works?

The rains brought out
the crawfish.

That's awesome.

I was just standing there
telling you, "watch out
for food." boom!

Oh, look, look, look, look.

Crawfish, let him crawl to us.

[sarah] it's two of them.
There's one back there.

- [ej] oh, I see him.
- [sarah] I'mma go get him.

Yummy, yummy, yummy.
It's a big, big boy.

[ej] ah, come here.
Here's another crawfish.

[sarah] oh, boy.

Nice! Good job.
Add them to the boil.

[ej] ah, here we go.

[sarah] big boy?

[ej] biggun, biggun.

- [sarah] dump them.
- [ej] boom!

Ej, I see another one
right there.

I'm gonna get him.

Oh, this guy is probably
the biggest one yet.

Wow!

[sarah] we got probably,
probably ten in there now?

[ej] man, this is crawfish city.

[sarah] hey, these might be
oyster mushrooms.

They are oyster mushrooms.

- These are yummy, yummy
edible mushrooms.
-[ej] oh, my god.

[sarah] look at that.

[ej] is that what
the scales are supposed
to look like?

Yeah, they go all the way down
the stem.

Oh, look at these guys.
These are fresh.

[ej] woah. Those pancakes?

[sarah] yup, pancakes.

[ej] we found the grocery
store over here.

[ryan] hey guys

[rylie] what's up?

[ryan] just found
a piece of bamboo
floating over here.

[matt] oh, cool.

[rylie] yeah.

- [matt] that could be handy.
- [ryan] I know.

[ryan] we can use it for
maybe baiting the alligator
hook on it?

[rylie] yeah,
that's a good idea.

You know? Look at this thing.

[matt] hell, that's long.

- [ryan] yeah.
- [rylie] oh, wow.

[ryan] this thing is like
20 feet tall.

-[rylie] that would
be good for bait.
-[matt] oh, that's super long.

[rylie] sun is out.

[matt] so what you saying,
we should just bayou-d
a bamboo pole?

[ryan] yeah.

Bamboo is an extremely
resourceful tool.

You can cut it up
into containers.

You can boil water in it.

You can store food in it.

We got to come up with a plan
to where we want to bait that.

[matt] yeah.

[ryan] or the pole that
we found, if we leave
it as is,

we can use it as
an alligator pole
or a fishing pole.

[matt] for now, we
should get this gator bait
in the water.

[ryan] you got the other cord?

[matt] yeah cord's
right there. Bamboo poll's
almost over there.

Just bring this with us.

[matt] so we have had
two gator hooks weigh down
the bank here.

We need to set something new
because we've been seeing
gators stalking us at camp.

So now, we're hunting
in our backyard.

And this set up is
similar to the others,

but we needed
to get out as far as possible.

There's aquatic weeds
and vegetation all along
the bank.

Alligators are
very visual animals.

They also rely
on their sense of smell.

But they need to be able to see.

These aquatic weeds
hinder the ability to
see the bait.

So if we can get that bait
to drop into the open water,

then we're going to
have better success.

Well ryan and I
found this branch.

We're going to set up
the piece of bamboo we found

and dangle the bait
where I think
it's absolutely perfect.

It's a deep water ledge.

Alligator is going to
come up from the deep.
See it.

Grab it, pull it down,
take it down,

swallow it and then go time.

Thinking if we do this.

We get entondo-matic,

and we tie it like this.

It's getting...
It'd be dark in
an hour or so.

If we keep an eye on it
from camp, we could always...

[ryan] I know that's awesome
we could just watch him from
our front door, pretty much.

[matt] yeah. We can just
ease it on up.

We just... When he pulls it,
we should pull that slack

and just make sure
it cascades off this
side easy.

We could just kind of
coil it on the tree even.

[ryan] this would a good spot
to jump on a four-footer.

-[matt] oh, hell yeah.
-[ryan] just saw
his head there.

[matt] we may have to jump on
this one when we get off.

[ryan] all right.
Fingers crossed.

[matt] eat it.
I don't know where you're at.
Eat it.

[chopping]

[sarah] all right, you guys.

- Look at this.
- [suzanne] let's take a look.

[all] whoa!

- Oh, man, that looks good.
- [ej] that's a pot of chow.

[sarah] that looks awesome.

[ej] both my partners are
strong independent women.

And I respect that.

Neither suzanne or sarah
are sidekicks.

I'm out here doing
what I do best for the team

and they are going to do
what they do best
for the team.

'cause we got a long haul
to go and we're gonna
need each other.

And I know there's going to be
tougher days ahead.

[sarah] yeah, that's going to
be good eating.

Look at that.

[suzanne] yum, yum, yum.

Dinner is served.

- Big score.
- [suzanne] all right.

[sarah] yummy. Dig in time.

Oh, so good.

It is. No wonder,
it's a delicacy down here.

It's a bayou boil.

We boiled up crawfish tonight.

We eating good
at the chateau de la swamp.

[suzanne] that's right.
We even have some shrooms
over there.

What you thinking sarah?

Bayou bounty.

It's amazing.

[suzanne] really good.

[ej] I'm going to leave
the heads if you want.

- I'm going to put them
right there.
-[suzanne] oh, yeah. Totally.

I will totally
suck on the heads.

[groans]

I'm just so [bleep] tired, man.

I'm not strong enough to go
another night like that.

That was really hard.

And I kept myself
together all night.

No crying. No whining.
Just super strong.

I did everything I could do
to get through last night

and I thought I was
going to be fine.

I pushed myself as far as
I could push myself

and I think, I'm okay with that.

I think today
is the day, guys.
I think, I'm going home.

Taking it one day at a time

and it's been hard but

- [jeff] yeah.
- [steven] yeah.

- Last night was so bad.
- [jeff] yeah.

My knees hurt.
My body hurts.
My heart hurts.

It's cold.

[jeff] yeah, last night
was rough.

But it's going to get rougher.

I know.

And soon, every single night's
gonna be like that.

Every night.

[lacey] I didn't want
to give up that easily.

And I thought maybe
it will come back, you know?

That drive to be here.

I know it makes me feel like
such a weakass.

But the same time,
I know my limit.

And I know I can't do
another night.

[jeff] when you know, you know.

[steven] that's always sad
to see your partner go.

She really wanted to
cross that big finish line

and the environment stopped
her from doing that.

It's terrible out here.
It's brutal.

[steven] triple threat.

- [lacey] thank you.
- We love you.

[lacey] it's heartbreaking.

I was here to prove that
I'm a legend.

And now, I just came here
and embarrassed myself.

I didn't expect it.

I've been to africa.
I've been to ecuador.
I've been to belize.

This is what has cut me down.

Louisiana.

This is the worst place
to survive on the planet.

The louisiana swamps.

Yeah.

[jeff] I throw up for days.

I've got this
parasitic infection.

Just so happens you know,
it's got my nuts.

The environment out here,
it wants to kill us.

And it's our job to defeat her.

So with that comes a lot of
suffering, a lot of torture
and a lot of hard work.

Because this is
a cut-throat game.

If you can't hack it,
you're gone.

Honestly, she was the wildcard.

And you know, I figured
I'm going to give her
the benefit of doubt.

And no matter
how bad you want it,
in this environment in...

It'll break anybody.

[lacey] bye, louisiana.

And all you freaking mosquitos.

I hope, I never see you again.

[amber] gary doesn't
want to stop.
He's like a work horse.

Like, he just wants to
keep go, go, go, go.

I just want him to conserve
that energy

because we are just
beginning this marathon.

[max] I mean that might
be the last one.

[gary] yeah, I'm going to aim
for one more

but it would kind of do
for the night.

I might start just putting
small ones on and

I'll add one later,
if there's time or something.

[max] that back wall
is half finished.

If I could've been in charge,
we'd be done by now.

So other people want to show
their big guns,

and use their tools
and do the thing.

I just don't want you
to burn yourself out.

[amber] I'm trying to do
as much as I can, fishing.

I want to make sure I can do
everything possible

to get these boys to
take a break and relax.

[amber] yay.

Heard the line move just now

-and I'm like I got a catfish.
[amber screams]
-[max] come here.

[amber] oh, my god. [bleep]

- gimme a damn hug, baby girl.
-[amber] that's caught
on everything.

Oh, my god. I'm so happy.

[max] voila!
Another freaking catfish.

She is catwoman.

[amber] oh, my god.

Let me see it.

- [gary] oh yeah.
- [amber] it's a beautiful guy.

I caught another fish.

Put my hook in there and boom.

I love providing
for my partners.
I love it.

Boys, we eating so good.
Look at the size of this.
This is bigger.

Well, I don't know if
it's bigger but it's just
as good.

Yeah, it's...

- Oh, my god.
- I'm so happy.

-I'm so happy for you.
-It got both of them.
A big group hug.

Ah, I'm so happy for us.

This is for us. We needed this.

[max] it's your win.
[amber] no, I needed this.
I felt bad,

I was freaking out a little
bit, over exhaustion,
you working hard.

It's time. This is it.
Right here.

[amber] well, guess what.
Fish for dinner.

Feelin' like a rock star right
now providing for my boys.

And we have worked together
as a team getting that,
I pulled it out of the water.

We got so much meat,
it's ridiculous.

Oh, yeah. Amber's catfish.

-And it's delicious.
It tastes so good.
- "scrumptulacent."

- [laughs]
- fresh fish.

We eating good
in the house tonight.

Fresh fish. So good.

[max] fresh fish.

Delicioso.

[matt] can't wait for tomorrow.

- [ryan] for new day.
- [matt] new day.

-[rylie] we probably need to
get some more firewood.
-[matt] yup.

I don't care if it's wet
or whatever,

but if we get hot coals,
we can burn wet wood.

[matt] yeah.

[matt] that was the pole
going down.

[rylie] I think we
should check it.

[ryan] oh, we going to go
all the way out?

[matt] yes.

[rylie] this is [bleep] crazy.

- All right, let's go.
- [ryan] all right.

[matt] so right now,
it's super dark,
and can't really see much.

But we can hear it.

What do you guys hear?

[rylie] yeah, it's definitely
some lurking, and pulling.

[ryan] I just heard him blow
out all of his air bubbles
an inch underwater.

[matt] you can just hear
the branch shaking just now.

That's a huge sound.

Branches shaking. It is go time.

-[ryan] how are we going to
sleep tonight?
-[rylie] we can't!

[matt] this is a big day.

- And you know what...
-[rylie] one week baby,
one week.

One week in, sorry for being
late to the party.

But there is a gator
on that line.

I'll see you later, alligator.

[bleep]

[matt] it is go time
as soon as it gets to light.

Can't fight a gator
in the dark but

- [ryan] I know.
- [matt] oh, my god, you guys.

[ryan] by the sound of that,
I'm going to say it's a 99%...

[matt] I bet it's go time.

[rylie] we're going to
not be able to sleep.

We're not going to be
able to sleep.

It's gonna be crazy.

- Team savage. Go big...
- [all] or go hungry.

[matt] yeah!

We are alligator gladiators.

[matt] oh, get him.
Get him. Get him.
Get him. Get him.

Yeah. Whoo-hoo.

[narrator] throughout
the ultimate
legends challenge,

each team will be evaluated
on a new scale.

The xls or xl success metric,

which calculates their likely
percentage of completing

their 60 days together
as a team.

After the first storm
of the challenge

brought an early
taste in winter.

Lacey's inability
to cope with the cold

snapped her will to continue

[lacey] I think today
is the day, guys.
I think, I'm going home.

[jeff] this is a
cut-throat game.

If you can't hack it,
you're gone.

[narrator] now their xls will
be recalculated as
a two man team

which based on their skill
and experience,

rises to 58%.

For max, gary and amber

conflict and tension
has slowed their
shelter progress.

[gary] this ain't
holding it [bleep]

[narrator] but a steady
string of food wins

is keeping them in the game.

[max] yeah! Did it, baby.

[narrator] still their chances
of finishing the challenge
as a team dropped slightly

from 41% to 35%.

After weathering
the first storm.

[sarah] this rain is
really intense.

[narrator] and forging
new bonds.

[narrator] ej, sarah and suzanne

may have found
a recipe for success
in the swamp.

[sarah] yummy.

[suzanne] so good.

[narrator] their team xls rises

from 52 to 56%.

[bleep] tied on dude.

Worked like a champ.

[ryan] oh, my lord.

[narrator] thanks to
their innovation...

[matt] I think it's a good
idea to use the whole
thing as bait.

[narrator]
and long term strategy.

[matt] I don't know
where are you at,

eat it.

[narrator] matt, ryan and rylie

may have the bounty
they have been working
toward.

There's a gator on that line.

[narrator] with a risky
mission at hand,

their team xls rises
from 36 to 42%.

- Team savage. Go big...
- [all] or go hungry.

[matt] did you guys
sleep at all?

[ryan] not much.

[matt] yeah, but 11 hours

and now the anticipation
is over.

- [rylie] battle ready.
- [matt] get ready for battle.

- What do you think?
- Feel a little like a...

[rylie] oh you want
to do a little...

[matt] little war paint action.

[rylie] yeah.

[matt] let's take a dip.

[rylie] team savage.
Getting into it.

[matt] team savage.
Getting our war paint going.

[ryan] legendary battle
about to happen.

[matt] all right, let's come
up with a game plan
and see what we can do.

- [ryan] all right.
- [rylie] whoo.

Well, the morning has come.
We are after this gator.

We know there's a gator on
the hook. It's crazy
and we're ready to go.

We are constantly taking
big risks to get big wins,

and you know, that's how we're
going to make it to day 60.

All right, so...

I think our best bet...

I'll go out on the tree.

I have had a lot of experience
with these gators,
so I'll come out.

I'll hold the line for a minute,

see what we are dealing with.

Then rylie if you
want to follow me.
Ryan follow after her.

And it's where at
the end of this tree
what we're going to find

is the biggest battle is
going to happen right out here
in this open water.

So this area here

- let's call this
the battle zone. Okay?
-[ryan] okay.

[matt] during this time
in this battle zone

do not fall out of the tree.

You fall out of the tree,
you may not get back up
on the tree.

So while we get
him fighting here,

we have to get him
situated in a way

that we're actually able to
may be extend the rope...

And ryan if you want to
may be extend our rope

- as we're holding it.
- [ryan] yeah.

[matt] you extend it. You come
over here on the shore.

Then as we let go of the rope,

you can start pulling,
we'll walk back over here.

Get in position.

[ryan] okay.

As you're pulling it in,

I will try to lasso a noose
around that gator's head.

-[ryan] okay.
-[matt] then rylie
you grab the rope again.

- [rylie] okay.
- [matt] you start pulling.

I'll start pulling
that lasso pulled.

And we're gonna have to pull
his head in two different
directions here.

[rylie] it's really important
to even the playing field.

The water is his territory
but the land is ours.

And so, we're trying to
get him up on the land,

because we don't want
anyone getting hurt.

[matt] now when he's here,
that's when you ryan,

deliver the kill shot.

You're going to take your knife

that's the spot
about the size of a quarter
on top of his head.

- That's where his brains at.
- Yup.

Remember that little half moon
from one of the first
alligator in the everglades.

It wasn't very clean
but it was quick.

Taking down that alligator
in the everglades,

that is a huge advantage to
me personally out here.

And I'm really excited
to get another one.

This alligator is
going to immediately

know he's being hunted,
the moment we pull
that rope up

and he's going to
fight like hell.

His fighting, he's going to
try to get away.

Once he realizes
he can't get away,

that's when he's going to
start every manoeuvre he can.

Alligator death roll.

That's where they actually
have to use all their
core strength

they roll just like they
would rip something apart.

[ryan] yeah, like if it's over
a five footer, I'm not getting
in the water.

Just letting you know
that right now.

[rylie] if it's over
five foot, it's bigger
than me.

This is the most
dangerous thing
I've ever done.

And there's no room for error.
We cannot screw this up.

There's a lot of trust involved.

So if any one of us
don't do our part,

we're putting the others
in danger.

So what we need to do
is bring him into our home

and dispatch him here.

Most importantly, let's be safe.

[matt] hell, yeah.

[ryan] let's [bleep] crush this.

[matt] let's get out here
and get us a gator.

- All right.
- [ryan] let's do this.

A lot of things could go wrong.

Not knowing the size
of the alligator.

The three of us have never
been out on this willow tree
before, testing its strength.

A lot of the trees
around here are rotten

and they break very easily.

If one of us fell in the water
game over.

[matt] see how that ropes?

It's going up the side.

[ryan] that's real taut.

We'll go over there
and do the head drilling.

[matt] yeah, he's there.

[rylie] all right.

[matt] hope you got
good balance.

Goes without saying,
do not fall in.

He's already moving.

-[rylie] he's looking.
-[ryan] look, look, look.
He knows.

[bleep]

oh boy. I...

- [matt] adrenaline is like...
- [rylie] I know. I know.

[matt] please don't fall in.

[rylie] okay, yeah, yeah.

Just going to make
sure I don't [bleep] fall.

[matt] all right,
so it's good news, guys.

He's definitely here.

Here you go, rylie. Yeah.

[rylie] I'm not sure,
there's enough room
for me here,

[ryan] yeah we have
two branches
to balance on.

And have that
branch to the left
and that's wood.

[rylie] I don't think so.
I don't think I should
get up there.

[matt] if you're ok there,
it's fine.

[rylie] pass me the line
and I'll...

[ryan] you can get
down like this.
It'll be a little more stable.

[matt] so right now,
he's on here.

But what we have to do
is get him untangled.

He's pretty wrapped up in stuff.

I can't figure out
how big he is yet.

He's definitely wrapped
around this tree.

Hold this.

- This is the danger zone.
- [rylie] right

[ryan] the hydrilla is
much bigger than
this alligator.

[rylie] it's moving.
It's moving.

[ryan] you got it.

[matt] keep pulling, rylie.

Right now, he's tangled up
pretty hard.

Going to try to get
this log out.

-[rylie] I tell you what,
nothing is easy in this swamp.
-[ryan] nah.

[rylie] we got to
fight for every bit.

[matt] one problem done.

This was not going to be easy.

- [rylie] oh, is he over here?
- [matt] he's taking it.

- [rylie] I see the bubbles.
- [ryan] yup.

[rylie] [bleep] I think
he's over here.

Is everybody solid?

[matt] let's use that bamboo.

I'm going to push things around.

- [rylie] he's right over here.
- [ryan] yeah

-[rylie] he's very
close to us.
-[ryan] he's damn close to us.

[bleep]

[rylie] all right,
now he's trying to move out.

He's trying to move out that way

towards you.

-[rylie] you want to give him
some slack while we move?
-[matt] yeah.

Hold on to that,
I'm going to push this
into the open water.

[rylie] ah [bleep] he's under
the tree.

-[matt] oh, he's fighting
under there.
-[ryan] he's fighting.

[ryan] oh, man,
that's some serious [bleep]

[matt] see if I can
get this off.

[rylie] let me get to
the side of this before
I get snatched.

- Okay, got it.
- [matt] he's fighting on it.

What the [bleep]?

Oh he's right here.
He's right here.

- [ryan] watch your knee.
- [rylie] watch out.
