Naked and Afraid: Last One Standing (2023–…): Season 1, Episode 4 - More Hides Than Friends - full transcript

Competitors battle for new resources in a grueling migration across punishing, elevated terrain; an injury puts Matt's challenge at risk; Waz unleashes a game-changing response to Jeff's cutthroat strategy; two survivalists exit t...

[Cheeny] This is different.

[Wes] This is something
we've never done before.

[Matt] You gotta watch your back

for not just animals this time,

but for the other survivalists.

[Gary] Run!

[Shouting]

[Exclaims]

[Narrator] For
the first time ever,

12 of Naked and Afraid's
most skilled survivalists

are competing head to head

for 45 days in the
South African bush...

Whoo!

[Laughs]

[Narrator] ...To crown
the best of the best...

Yeah!

[Narrator] ...And win $100,000.

This is what I live for!

[Jeff] I will do anything
to win this challenge.

[Narrator] Failure
means elimination.

Don't bitch about
[Bleep] losing.

[Narrator] Only one
will reach the end...

[Gary] It has
changed, it's so real.

[Narrator] ...And will
be the last one standing.

Previously on
last one standing...

...sensing Stacey's
frustration with Jeff,

Gary and Waz plot to eliminate

one of the biggest
threats in the competition.

[Waz speaking]

[Narrator] According
to challenge rules,

if Stacey chooses to leave,
Jeff would also be eliminated,

encouraging Gary
to make a bold move.

[Gary] All of us were talking,
and we're like, "hey, Stacey,

tap whenever you want."
'Cause then we all feel it.

[Stacey] Oh, could tap him out.

[Gary] 'Cause he's
been ripping you off

and all of us off.

Now there's a strategy.

[Narrator] Now with the second
migration just two days away...

I'm feeling like
[Bleep] this dude,

I'm out of here, I'm leaving.

[Narrator] ...Jeff's fate is in
the hands of someone else.

[Jeff] That's like
you laying in bed

with your significant
other, and them telling you

I almost slit your
throat last night.

I'm feeling like you
are holding control

over this entire situation,
and it's very upsetting to me.

I've been, like, on edge
the last couple of days.

We gotta fix this, I
can't live like this.

- Okay.
- We need a roof on the shelter.

That was why I
kind of, like, came to,

um, a precipice

- while I was not sleeping last night...
- Mmm-hmm.

...that [bleep] this dude,
I'm out of here, I'm leaving.

Oh, my gosh.

Well, thank you for,
you know, talking to me.

I didn't realize how
bad it was getting.

Um...

...you are the only
one in this challenge

that I have given my
full word and myself to.

Like, we are partners.

We are in this together.

[Stacey] Gary already mentioned
how awesome it would be

and how I would go down
in Naked and Afraid history

if I were to tap Jeff out.

Everybody seems
to feel so bad for me

about my situation,

you know, they're amping
me up to tap him out,

but they're not
considering that that's

a pretty selfish
statement because

I give up my opportunity to win.

And I think that's
kind of selfish as well.

All right, let's do this.

I will put all of my energy
into making you comfortable.

I want us to be happy.

I mean, we've got this,
we're doing really well.

Let's continue talking about
the little things that pop up,

and let's fix them.

All right, well, we
can work through this.

- Yeah.
- I won't take us both out...

- Mmm-hmm.
- ...Yet.

[Laughing] No, I'm just kidding.

Jeff was very receptive
to my demands,

and what I wanted.

Between taking him out
myself or beating him,

I think beating him
would feel a lot better,

fair and square.

[Jeff] I need to make my
partner happy right now.

I'm going to sacrifice
my health and comfort

to make sure she's as strong
and positive as possible.

Now of course I
need that, right?

Our fates are
intricately linked here.

So I'm going to put
a roof on this shelter

because this is
scary at this point.

I collected as many
palm fronds as I could,

and I hope this helps smooth
some rough edges today.

[Stacey speaking]

- [Jeff] Yeah?
- Yeah.

[Jeff speaking]

- [Sarah] Hey, Cheeny.
- [Cheeny] Hey, what's going on?

[Sarah] I was
gonna go fish again.

[Cheeny] Look at that wake.

[Sarah] Dude, that thing's huge.

So at this point, we're
all doing the same thing,

which is trying to get
as much food as possible

in preparation for
the next migration.

We have no idea
what to anticipate

from the next area.

It could have more,
but it could also

have less resources.

So right here, right now

is where we need
to be stocking up.

[Cheeny] There's
a lot of big fish

moving around in here.

Catch anything?

- [Cheeny] Nothing yet.
- [Sarah] None are biting.

[Cheeny] Hey, Wes.

- [Wes] Hello.
- [Cheeny] Come on over, man.

[Wes] As a solo person,
it's hard to do everything.

If I had a partner,
they could fish all day,

I could be out
getting survival tools.

I could get the water.

When you're solo, it
makes it that much harder

'cause you just don't
have anybody else.

It's all you, all
day, all night.

I'm sorry, Wes.

[Wes] It's okay.

When Amber left,

all of the sudden, I
knew it was only me.

I miss people.

Uh, this whole alone business,

I never wanted to
do a challenge alone,

and I don't like it.

[Cheeny] I've been
seeing the fish move around

in the pond and jump.

I know it's not fished out.

I just don't think,
uh, anybody's

gonna share anything.

[Dan] Whoa.

Yes!

[Cheeny] Oh, I got one too!

I got a turtle!

- You got a turtle?
- [Cheeny] Yeah, I got a turtle.

- [Dan] Cheeny!
- Yay!

- [Dan] Yay!
- Yay!

- [Dan] Whoo!
- We're not gonna be hungry today.

[Sarah] That happened so fast.

I thought I got a stick.

[Dan] I've never eaten a turtle
before on these challenges,

so it's super exciting.

It's starting to get
more competitive.

Sharing with others
not happening as much.

All these people out here
fighting to win $100,000,

you need to take that
into account at every step.

[Wes] I tell you, I think
I'm gonna go ahead

and head back myself.

- [Sarah] Okay.
- [Wes] I haven't got a lick

of firewood started
for tonight yet.

I'm starting to get hungry.

It's plain and simple,
I'm starting to get slow.

I can feel my body just not
being able to do what it did,

you know, four or five days ago.

I think tomorrow
I'll do some hunting

'cause I notice I am
getting a little weak.

And with migration
coming up in a few days,

somethings gonna have
to happen here soon.

[Jeff] Gonna go
down, pace things out,

basically try to find
the exact location

on the other side of the river

where the map will be.

My mind is all on that
migration right now.

I want to have every
advantage possible

over every other group out here.

I'm trying to predict
what's coming up,

and if I can, I'm gonna have
an advantage over the others.

I think this is perfect for
what we're looking for.

It would be easy
to jump in here,

swim out and float right
down to those rocks.

I think what I want to
do is I want to give a go

on going all the way
across to feel it all out.

- [Stacey] You gonna swim from here?
- [Jeff] Uh, yeah.

[Stacey] All right.

[Narrator] In two days,
teams will be migrating

an unknown distance
to the third zone.

On day 14,

all groups will need
to cross the river

where they will find maps for
the next phase of the challenge.

[Stacey] I am really exhausted,

everything hurts.

This challenge,
it's not been easy.

I'm kinda feeling a
little like the underdog,

but it's been known
for the underdog

to win gloriously.

So I think that it's
feasible for any of us

at this point.

[Jeff] Once we get
out to these rocks here,

it's very shallow
all the way across.

We have little risk of
getting taken off our feet,

washed downstream,

but it's gonna
take an initial swim

from this point to get
to those first rocks.

So it's important to
do it now on day 12.

That way we know
exactly what we're doing

come migration day.

[Matt] I would assume Jeff
is trying to figure out a path

across the river on day 14.

I'm assuming he's
trying to figure out

how he can get a step ahead.

This is still my competition,

and I'm playing to win.

I'm wondering if
Stacey is going to finally

pull that trigger and
try to eliminate Jeff.

That would be perfect.

I'll let the bird dog over
there figure out the best path.

Some people just like
to figure out how to get

as much studying in
before the course, I guess.

[Waz] I'm intrigued because
you're holding an arrow,

- and you have no bow.
- [Gary laughs]

[Waz] So we got two days
left here before migration

and, um, until we leave here.

It would be nice
to get out of here

and get some good food.

You ever had nopales, my friend?

[Waz] No.

- That's paddle cactus, is it?
- [Gary] Yeah.

- [Waz] You cook these up?
- [Gary] Yep.

[Waz] Nice.

[Narrator] Nopal
plants are a good source

of vitamin C and calcium

and offer about a
gram of sugar per cup.

[Waz] They don't have
hairs on them or anything?

Not those ones.

I'm considered the
wildcard always,

and I'm the oldest one here,

but I'm a noted survivalist.
I'm definitely the real deal.

[Waz] I like this sort
of extra line of calories

that we're getting in.

- [Gary] Hell yeah.
- [Waz] Outside the box thinking.

[Gary] Absolutely.

[Waz] You're gonna bake some?

[Gary] Yeah, first
I'm gonna bake one.

[Waz] I like Gary as a person,

I respect him as a survivalist,

and I think he's got
as good a chance

as anyone out here to win.

That's good.

Yeah.

There you go, dude.

Good, delicious nutritious food

right at our fingertips.

[Waz] I love the
scavenger lifestyle.

[Laughs]

This is... this is forager.

- Forager.
- Scavenger was the maggots.

Oh, forager.

[Jeff] So I do think

this is gonna be the
best way to cross.

The current, once I got in
to where I couldn't touch,

you could feel it pushing
you, and it just required

a few little swims, and
you were right to rocks.

[Stacey] Okay.

- [Jeff] I like it.
- Something to consider.

Yeah, good scout.

[Jeff] Survival you
try to give yourself

every advantage you can.

I'll get firewood

if you want to grab
us a pot of water,

that would be awesome.

[Stacey] Yeah, we can do that.

I have been
chronically dehydrated

for the past two to three days,

and you want to make
sure that you're hydrating

as much as possible
before a move.

And so I need to drink
as much as possible

before we hit the road
again 'cause we do not know

what the next
location's gonna be like.

Okay.

Never gutted a turtle before.

- Let's see how much we get out this way.
- Good idea.

- Oh, its eggs.
- Whoa, eggs.

- It's eggs! [Exclaims]
- Eggs! My favorite.

- Yay!
- [Dan] So much fat.

That's awesome.

They just keep coming.

- [Gasps]
- [Cheeny] Oh, yeah.

It's amazing how many
eggs these things have.

10, 11, 12, 13,
14, 15 eggs so far.

Eggs are full of
fat and nutrients,

they're one of the
best things for you.

Exactly what we need right now,

especially with migration
coming up in a few days.

Oh, my God.

Mmm.

Turtle doesn't have
that much meat,

but the eggs were
really the score there.

Nom-nom-nom-nom.

And, I mean, the bass
has a lot of meat on it.

Chewy.

Some sizable protein
for us over here.

[Cheeny] Mmm-hmm.

[Dan] You know we need that.

[Cheeny] Dan and I have
had pretty good success

at this location, but
moving every seven days,

you gotta constantly start over.

So you just have to be adaptive,

and keep rolling
with the punches.

- That's awesome.
- [Cheeny] Mmm-hmm.

[Wes] Well...

...it's not raining,
so that's good.

It's a long night
though, really long night.

It's chilly,

and I hate being alone,
I'm more of a team player,

I like people around,

and I'm just getting wore out.

Migration can't get
here quick enough.

I'm just alone more
and more and more,

and it's killing me.

We'll see how the day goes,

but I hate being alone...

...and hungry.

[Stacey exclaiming in pain]

Oh, [bleep].

[Jeff speaking]

[Stacey speaking]

[Jeff speaking]

[Stacey exclaiming]

[Breathing heavily]

[Jeff speaking]

[Stacey exclaiming]

[Jeff speaking]

[Stacey speaking]

[Jeff speaking]

[Stacey speaking]

[Jeff speaking]

It's the morning of day 13 and

Stacey is not doing
good right now. Um,

she can't even sit
up to drink water.

She's been,

um, breathing funny all night.

She's been complaining
of heart pain.

[Stacey speaking]

[Jeff] I don't want you
doing anything today.

[Stacey] We gotta
prepare for the migration.

It's okay, like, your health is
more important than anything, so...

...you just, you stay here.

I'll take care of the things
that need taking care of.

- [Stacey] Thanks.
- And...

- [Stacey sighs]
- ...Try to pay close attention

to whether it's getting
better or worse today.

[Stacey exclaims]

Rather than sit and
watch Stacey struggle,

I'm gonna head
to the fishing hole,

and try to get us some food.

Yeah, all right. Check in later.

Joining forces with Matt,

we're gonna go
out on a dual hunt.

See if we can
play off each other,

and one of us bring
something down.

I'm going to a place where
I've seen impala in the past.

Matt is going a little
bit to the east of me,

and hopefully we can push
the impala towards each other.

I'm hungry. I need
something to put back in.

If we don't get
something to eat...

...honestly,
honestly I don't know.

Right now...

...this impala,

they have the
high point, so it's...

...very hard to know...

...how to get up close to them.

What I think I'm gonna do

is walk like I'm not hunting...

...and just see

if they make a mistake.

[Jeff] I just got to the
fishing hole once again,

and sure enough,

there's an entire herd
of impala right up here.

And once again,

I don't have the bow.

And this all comes back to Matt

not wanting to trade the
bow for a survival knife.

It's one more morning that
I would have impala meat

on the table for everyone.

And that's not
happening because...

...other people are, uh,
treating me differently.

[Matt] Obviously we know
around this water hole,

this is gonna be the
best opportunity to hunt.

I think people should
stay out of the water hole.

You stay out of the water hole,

there's a better chance
to hunt something.

And then there's Jeff...

...at the water hole right now.

You don't need
to catch these fish

first thing in the morning,

it's already been
proven these fish

actually bite better in
the middle of the day.

At this point...

...for him to come this
early in the morning,

to me...

...it feels like he's actually
trying to sabotage our hunt.

[Wes] Okay, hunting was a bust.

I had a bunch of impala
coming towards me,

and then Jeff, turned out he was

going to the pond for
some early morning fishing.

And all the sudden,
they blew and took off.

I mean, this is awful.

This is just terrible.

[Stacey speaking]

[Jeff speaking]

[Stacey] I know.

[Jeff] I mean, this
is something serious,

this isn't just
survival fatigue.

I'm gonna have to
call someone, Stace.

Medic, this is Jeff and Stacey.

We have an
emergency, do you copy?

[Medic over radio]

[Jeff] Stacey is not doing well,

I've very concerned.

Um, can you guys come
here immediately, please?

[Medic over radio]

[Jeff] Okay, they're coming.

[Stacey sighs]

She can't even sit
up to drink water,

she's crippled with pain now.

[Stacey] Hey.

- [Stacey] Uh-huh.
- Okay.

- [Stacey exclaims] Yeah.
- Okay.

No, it's more up high.

- Just under here.
- Yeah.

- At the back here?
- Mmm-mmm.

- Nothing? So just your under the ribs, yes?
- Yes.

- [Stacey] [Groans] Ah, yeah!
- [Medic] Okay.

[Medic speaking]

[Heart monitor beeping]

[Medic speaking]

[Stacey speaking]

[Medic speaking]

- [Stacey groaning]
- [Medic speaking]

- [Stacey] That's good.
- [Medic speaking]

[Narrator] With vitals
appearing stable,

the head medic is called
for further evaluation.

[Bird cawing]

[Wes] This challenge
is absolutely brutal,

especially as a
solo survivalist.

Makes my challenge
infinitely harder.

Ugh. I didn't wanna
ever do an elim challenge.

I didn't wanna do
it alone in Ecuador

when Suzanne tapped.

It is another cold night.

It's like every
night is a cold night.

Good lord.

Only us idiots think this
is fun, I swear to God.

[Sighs]

I never thought I'd had to
do anything alone again.

And that was good, 'cause
I hate doing alone stuff.

I just don't like being
by myself. I never have.

Yeah. It's not in my nature.

- [Jarryd Haupt] How are you feeling?
- [Stacey] Crappy.

[Jarryd] Crappy, eh? No
change from this morning, Stacey?

Nothing? Okay.

We're gonna assess you real
quick, see what's happening.

[Medic speaking]

Of course I feel bad for
Stacey, but I'm a competitive guy.

I... in order to be the best,

you have to be as
strong as possible.

And it may get to the point
here she might slow me down

during migration.

[Medic speaking]

[Jarryd] In the medical field, we do have
a saying that the abdomen always lies.

It's kind of having a hundred
dominoes, but you can only see one.

That one falls, and you don't
know which direction it's gonna go.

There's not much more
we can do for you out here.

We don't wanna
keep you out here,

um, 'cause we can't further
diagnose what's wrong.

And we don't want your condition
to progressively get worse.

Okay? So we're gonna
have to pull you medically.

And we're gonna have
to get you to a hospital,

where we've got a lot more tools

to try and figure
out what's going on.

Okay?

So, currently at the moment, we
need to pull Stacey from the challenge.

She's complaining of severe
abdominal cramps or diarrhea,

which could be
from the ravine water,

bacteria-born diseases
from the water source.

- Thank you for everything.
- Thanks, Jeff.

You've been a great partner.

[Stacey] You've been
a great partner, too.

You work really
hard, I'm sorry I was...

I pre-judged you
before we hung out.

- [Stacey] You're welcome. Thank you.
- Mmm-hmm.

[Stacey] It's not how I
thought this challenge...

I didn't think it would
be a medical situation.

I thought that either I
would be eliminated early,

or I would win. [Laughs]

- Bye, Jeff.
- Godspeed, Stacey. Get well, please.

- [Stacey exhaling] Ooh.
- [Medic] Slowly.

[Stacey] Any of the
opinions I had about Jeff prior

were based on previous
challenges or hearsay.

But getting to know
him, I don't know.

He seems like a
really, really nice guy.

I'm going to, from
this day forward,

just give him the
benefit of the doubt.

I thought I could do this.

I really wanted to do this.

But I'm not going to
be the last one standing.

I'm just grateful to be given
an opportunity to be out here.

And I hope the best wins.

[Jeff] And then there were nine.

And I'm one of the nine.

My chances of being the
last one standing just went up.

[Wes] I'm going to fish.

I've got no food.

I'll see if we can get
something. Doesn't matter.

I gotta be up front
about something.

I'm considering removing
myself from the challenge.

I'm really not doing well.

My body is sore.

I'm 52,

and just gets harder
every challenge.

No fish today.

I guess when all
the signs say stop,

I guess you just stop.

Ay-ay-ay.

- Hey, guys.
- [Cheeny] What's up, Wes?

[Wes] I'm going home.

[Dan and Cheeny] What?

- [Wes] Yeah, I'm gonna go home.
- [Cheeny] Oh.

So, I've got some items
that I'm gonna redistribute.

There's some people who've been
really good to me on this challenge,

Dan and Cheeny, for one.

[Cheeny] I'm gonna
miss you, Wes.

I know, honey.
I'll miss you, too.

- I have an axe for you.
- [Dan] Thank you.

And...

...you are gonna get this hide,

because you need to
stay as warm as possible.

- [Wes] Take that.
- [Dan] Yeah, you need it.

[Wes] All right. Love you, guys.

- [Cheeny] Love you.
- [Dan] Love you too, Wes.

[Cheeny] Aw, Wes.

[Wes] I've done everything.

I've done challenges in
the hardest places on earth...

[Inaudible]

[Wes] Feel like
I'm in crisis mode.

...the coldest
places in the world.

I feel just absolutely
whipped and helpless.

This is really,
really challenging.

This is a crazy challenge.

It absolutely is.

It's just as hard
as it's ever been.

Maybe even harder.

I've never quit
anything in my life.

Exiting a challenge on your own,

that does hurt your soul.

But coming out here,

you're setting yourself
up for, uh, for struggling.

[Gary] What's up, neighbor?

[Waz] Hey, what's happening?

Came to share the
news. Stacey's gone.

No!

[Jeff] She was just
medically pulled.

[Exhales]

I just hope it's
nothing serious.

- Did you put something in the water?
- [All laughing]

[Waz] It might've been nice
if Stacey had just tapped.

But to be honest with you,

it's gonna be nice beating
Jeff, uh, fair and square.

[Jeff speaking]

We'll put a little bow on it and
send him home in a couple weeks.

Two in a... two in one day.

Oh, you didn't hear?

- Shut up.
- [Waz] Wes is gone.

[Waz] Wes walked out.

[Jeff] No way!

- [Waz] Yeah.
- So now there's eight?

[Waz] Now there's eight.

- [Laughs] Crazy, huh?
- Yeah.

[Jeff] One-third of the
survivalists are already gone

out of this challenge.

And we're only two
weeks in. This is crazy.

Africa is thinning
the herd naturally.

That's what nature does, baby.

The strong survive,
the weak die.

[Gary speaking]

[Waz speaking]

[Cheeny speaking]

[Dan speaking]

[Cheeny speaking]

All right, it's time to pack up.

[Dan] That wet dirt
should do the trick.

- [Dan] Let's start packing up.
- [Cheeny] All right.

I got a bunch of burlap, I got a
bird's nest to start making a fire.

More cordage.

Strategically put these in play.

Efficient packing
is very important.

I'm excited to go
to a new location.

I'm excited to potentially
find more resources.

That's been my
strategy since day one,

acquire as many items as I can,

and this is just one more
opportunity to do that.

[Steven] According to this map,

-gotta go across this
river, so, -[Sarah groans]

[Steven] Not really
looking forward to that.

[Matt] I'm right about here,

and this is where
the map is, here.

I believe the best spot to cross
the river from what I've seen,

is right up just above it.

So, we'll assess when
we get down there.

If it's just gonna be one of us,

I'd say you're gonna be
way faster getting across that.

I'd say you dive
across, get that map,

come back, we'll
have a read of it,

and see what we
gotta do from there.

- Okay.
- You good with that?

[Gary] Packing it
up. So, I was thinking,

- like, transporting the grasses...
- [Waz] Yeah?

[Gary] No scrambling,
no figuring it out,

- we got a fire right when we get there.
- Mmm-hmm.

[Gary] Man, we're pretty
equipped. I'm ready to rock and roll.

[Narrator] Every seven days,
competitors must move to a new location.

Today, survivalists
will migrate to zone 3.

But to get there, they
must first cross the river

and locate a new map
on a set of nearby rocks.

And speed will be a factor.

The first survivalists
who arrive in zone 3

will have the first shot
at the new caches.

[Steven] All right, got it.

Crossing this river is
incredibly dangerous.

[Matt] Morning, everybody.
The gang is here.

All right. Let's get
across that river.

- [Cheeny] You good?
- [Dan] Let's go.

- [Dan] Here we go.
- [Cheeny] Oh, [bleep].

[Matt] Let's get
across that river.

Getting to this map location,
it's like a scramble of field mice.

We're running around here and
there, swimming across the river.

[Waz] Dan's already three-quarters
of the way across this river.

And I watched
Gary get in that water

and come out on the other
side at the same time as Dan,

so he's flying
across that river.

[Blows whistle]

[Waz speaking]

Standing up on shore, so I had
a bit of a look and I did spot him

a little bit upriver.

[Dan speaking]

[Cheeny speaking]

- [Dan] Ready?
- [Cheeny] Yeah.

[Jeff speaking]

This river is
completely chaotic.

These rocks are so slippery.

I'm falling all over the place.

[Reading]

[Steven reading]

[Matt reading]

Four pronged spear, okay.

[Narrator] The survivalists
will navigate to a waypoint

marked by a large acacia tree.

Here, they must pass a
test of primitive survival skill

by building a functional
fire-hardened four-pronged spear.

Only when they have
completed this task

can they advance to zone 3.

[Gary] We got here, at least.

[Waz speaking]

Keep an eye out for a stick that we
can make a four-pronged spear out of.

[Gary] Yeah.

[Cheeny] Might as
well grab one here

when we have all this
straight monkey tree wood.

[Jeff] I need to build a four...

...a four-tipped spear.

[Gary] Chop the bottom there.

[Waz] Ah, [bleep].

[Gary] I got it. Let's go.

- [Cheeny] Sweet.
- [Dan] That's fine.

[Cheeny] Yeah, we'll
just hammer it in fourths.

- [Sarah] So this is the challenge, then.
- [Steven] Yeah.

- That's easy.
- To hunt small game, we're gonna make a, uh,

- fire-hardened four-pronged spear.
- That's easy enough.

This is a really nice,
strong piece of cane.

- That's perfect.
- Makes perfect for,

- especially for making four-pronged spears.
- Yeah.

Sometimes you rush, sometimes...

...you don't wanna rush.

Some people are really racing.

I noticed Gary, I noticed Jeff,

they are foot racing it.

Me, I'm going as
safely as possible.

Let's see if this stuff
is strong enough here.

I've used river cane
before for a spear.

I've speared small
game with it...

...plenty of times.

So what I'm gonna do on this,

I'm gonna grab some
embers from my fire

and actually help
to get that fire going.

Four-pronged
spear, piece of cake.

I think I was in the crib probably
making four-pronged spears.

But I need to fire harden it,

which means I
need fire on location.

I'm gonna go back, grab
us some smoldering embers,

put them on a log,
and carry it out.

What you want is, you
don't want a hard wood,

you want something that's
just deep and catching,

holding ember for a long time.

By blowing, you can always tell

if there's a nice, red hot one.

Some charcoal,
that'll help burn.

A warm one would be good.

I don't know if this is
gonna be the fastest move.

What I want is less
work once I get there.

But it's a, uh, risk
versus reward,

and it's just...
Hopefully that is worth it.

[Narrator] A fire-hardened
four-pronged spear

is one of the most important
primitive survival tools.

After the survivalists select
a quality piece of wood

they will split the ends,
creating four points, or prongs,

that will be sharpened
for maximum effectiveness.

They will then start
a fire from scratch

to fire-harden the four prongs.

These prongs can then be used
to impale prey on multiple points,

making it a highly
effective primitive weapon.

Yes! [Laughs]

- [Waz] Hey, Gary.
- [Gary] Yeah?

- [Waz] We'll go to that tree there.
- Huh.

We're at a mad dash.
We're basically in first place.

[Waz] So, one of us is
gonna start making the spear,

the other one's
gonna make a fire.

[Gary] Yeah. I'll make a fire.

Oh, wait, look, there's
a rock right here.

Like a good fireplace.

- [Gary] Perfect. This is perfect.
- All right.

[Waz] I'll get
going on the spear.

We've got a plan for this one,

in relation to who's
doing what jobs.

It's just time to execute.

[Jeff] I'm gonna chop
this down for a spear.

I'm chopping this tree
down because it's straight,

and, uh, it's gonna be strong.

This is definitely where,

uh, having these survival
items comes in handy.

[Breathing heavily]

These tools are really
paying off for me now.

[Dan] How about
right up here, Cheeny?

[Cheeny] Right
here in this dirt?

- [Dan] Yeah, there's a flat spot.
- Yup.

- [Dan] Don't have to be pretty.
- Just has to work.

[Dan] Just has
to work. [Exhales]

So Dan starts working on
the spear, and I go right to town

gathering as much firewood, dry
grass, anything extra we might need,

to get a good,
maintainable fire going.

[Waz] Wish we had a small
knife, to be honest with you.

With a big knife like this,
especially one that's not sharp,

is a little bit tough,
but I will make it.

Typically when you're
making a spear like this,

it's easier to make
it out of a soft wood,

uh, that's got
some moisture in it.

But then the tips
will break pretty easy.

So you're better
off in the fire.

It's called fire hardening,
and it's just that,

it just takes the moisture out
of the wood and hardens it up.

You have a bird's nest, right?

- [Cheeny] Oh, yeah.
- Get the fire started, too.

- [Dan] Cool.
- [Cheeny] Yep.

I'm building the spear now,

and then I'm gonna build a fire.

This would be much
easier if I still had a partner.

One of us would
be able to start fire,

the other would be able
to, uh, build the spear.

So, with one person,

I'm definitely at a
disadvantage with this one.

- [Waz] Let's get that fire going.
- [Sighs]

[Waz speaking]

[Gary] Nah.

[Bleep].

[Bleep].

[Waz] Gary realizes he's left
his dry grass back in the shelter,

so he's not gonna be able
to use that to start a fire.

[Gary groans]

- [Sarah] This looks like the tree on the map, huh?
- [Steven] Yep.

- [Sarah] All right, let's get to it.
- Let's get out there.

[Matt] I can see all the
naked people in front of me,

I'm slightly delayed
from some of the others.

But I have got some
good smoldering embers.

So I should be able to
start a fire right off the bat.

[Gary speaking]

I just fart into super
dry grass, it just lights.

Leaving it behind
was a huge mistake.

[Cheeny] Think we can
get this to start burning?

- [Cheeny] You ready?
- I think so.

[Cheeny] Dry material.
Fire in the hole.

[Steven] All
right, start the fire,

maybe the bird's nest,
getting the kindling ready.

Sarah's getting the
spear good to go.

That way, we can kinda
end up at the same time

and then start this puppy
in the fire and harden it up.

[Sarah] Yup.

[Jeff] All right, my
spear is complete.

Now I'm gonna work
on building my fire.

[Gary] [Bleep].

[Bleep].

[Waz] Gary, it's
all right, buddy.

No, it's not [bleep] all right.

[Waz] Got plenty of dry stuff
out here, don't worry about it.

[Gary] [Bleep].

There's still a little
bit of a challenge.

I got a couple things to do

and I can only do one at a time.

- [Cheeny] Are you ready?
- [Dan] I think so.

- [Dan] You got it?
- Yup.

[Dan] Fire hardening.

[Jeff] Have to
collect just enough

and then start a fire.

[Waz] Think anger is
not gonna help, Gary.

[Gary] Yeah, it will.

I was under the impression
I was [bleep] bringing it.

You understand that, right?
That makes sense to you?

-[Waz] Shut the [bleep]
up for a second, -no.

- You got a job to do, Gary, I want you to [bleep] do it.
- I'm doing it!

It's [bleep]!

-[Waz] Shut the [bleep]
up for a second, -no.

- You got a job to do, Gary, I want you to [bleep] do it.
- I'm doing it!

- All right.
- Even if I'm not, don't [bleep] cuss.

- I need your mind in this, Gary, not on that.
- It's in it!

- [Gary] It's [bleep].
- [Waz] [bleep] fine.

Well, you gotta start a fire,
you're the best at starting fires.

Doesn't [bleep] matter.

That sounded some principle,

[bleep], get your
[Bleep] straight!

[Waz] So, that happened.

[Jeff] I just heard Gary dropping
some profanity and cussing.

Okay, spear is in the fire.

This fire hardening should
take a couple minutes.

[Cheeny speaking]

The sticks.

[Gary] Ugh.

I feel like I've caught
up and I'm in that pace.

- [Dan] Getting there.
- [Cheeny] Still going?

It's just one of those
things, takes a little moment,

[blows] Little bit of time.

[Gary] Man, what the hell?

Right when I strike
the magnesium,

it starts popping like popcorn

and just flies all
over the place.

It's too big. I never...

- [Waz] It was all right, just make sure...
- it made a pop.

[Gary] Mine never does that.

Put some leaves on like this
next time, throw it up in here.

[Cheeny] Looks good.

I think we're near.

- It's going.
- Get her.

- We're good.
- Two minutes?

[Exhaling]

- Fire-hardened. We're good.
- [Cheeny] Okay.

- Group hug.
- [Cheeny] Okay.

- Proud of you.
- [Cheeny] Proud of you, bud.

All right, let's see where
we gotta go next, huh?

Orient the map to
the shape of the field...

Look for a... you know,
intersection of game trails.

Basically, this corner
is where we need to go.

We're gonna be working
our way up through this...

let's go over
to this tree first,

- to orient ourselves to the trail, yeah?
- Upper trail. Yeah.

- Good job. All right, see you guys.
- [Cheeny] Hey.

- [Gary] You're done?
- [Cheeny and Dan] Yeah.

- [Gary] Good job. Good job.
- [Cheeny] Thanks, dude.

[Waz] Good job.

We were first in. We
should've been first out.

There was... [stutters]
No other reason apart

from the fact that he's
focused on the wrong things.

[Dan] Hey, if you find any good tinder,
maybe you can just grab along the way...

Looks like we're going
down to this boulder.

- A little water source down there.
- What? What?

- Up to the boulder.
- Up to this boulder.

- That's actually some pretty high elevation climbing.
- Yeah.

Then we go
straight up the gorge.

[Narrator] This is zone 3,

located at the base of the
Drakensberg mountains,

which tower above
thousands of feet.

The survivalists will spend the
next seven days being tested against

the uneven terrain
and big brush.

The area is also home
to territorial leopards,

capable of dragging
300-pound kills into the trees.

[Cheeny] Look for a boulder.

- [Dan] Ready?
- [Cheeny] Ready.

- [Dan] Hey, good job.
- Thanks.

- You too, bud.
- I'm so proud of us.

- Killin' it.
- We're killin' it. Just keep killin' it.

[Dan] The most important thing
right now is to try to get there first.

Get the lay of the land first. Get the
first run on whatever caches are out there.

That can mean a
lot in this challenge.

Gonna be a hike.

[Intense music playing]

Okay. Yes. Yes!

My spear's fire-hardened. Now I can
make my way to my next survival location.

Based on the fact that I smoked
everyone on finding the items

in zone 1, and then zone
2 with Stacey's help...

ooh, I also made out
real well in this next zone...

...everyone's gonna
be going for these items.

Right now, I don't even know if they
so much want the items for themselves.

I think they just wanna
keep them out of my hands.

Three hundred
paces, approximately.

In a southeast direction.
[Whispers] Okay.

[Gary] It's that
heat right here.

[Waz] I don't know why Gary
would be taking so long to start a fire,

which should be a
pretty simple task.

That wet palm leaf, it gets super
heated from the magnesium, and...

- [Scraping]
- Every time we create...

you know when we throw a
palm leaf on that, it crackles?

[Waz] Yep.

[Gary] The magnesium gets, like,
2,000 degrees fahrenheit instantly.

So that's what it is.

[Waz] Son of a bitch. Go again.

Fire on.

[Intense music playing]

- [Steven] Yo, fire on.
- [Sarah] All right, fire on.

Yeah.

[Steven whispers] Yeah.

[Dramatic music playing]

I'm feeling great.

Although there is
one team ahead of me.

Assuming they're first,
I'm right on their tail.

I look back behind me,
and no one's even close.

Me, Dan and Cheeny, we're clearly
in the lead, and I'm right on their tails.

And not only that, I
just did all of this solo.

Dan and Cheeny, they
did it as a partnership.

[Intense music playing]

[Dan] Should be about halfway.

[Cheeny] Making good progress.

Whoo! It's...

Steeper than a horse's face.

[Music continues]

All right. [Exhaling]

Four-pronged
spear, fire-hardened.

I was the last one
on this location, but...

Not the last one walking
out, and that's important.

[Waz striking]

[Waz] That's gonna be it. There we
go. There we go. There we go. [Exhales]

- There we go, dude.
- [Gary] That stick, stick, stick...

[Waz] Sticks. Keep
them sticks comin'.

[Blowing]

[Waz] I don't understand why it
took him 40 minutes to start a fire.

He should've had that fire going

before I'd even
finished the spear.

- Nice.
- [Sarah] We got it.

- [Exclaims in relief]
- [Steven] High five.

- Yeah, man.
- And we started from scratch.

- Yeah!
- [Steven] I think that's pretty cool.

- [Sarah] It's the way to go.
- [Steven] Cool. Good job, babe.

- [Sarah] Yeah. Way to go, man.
- [Steven] I think we did good.

[Sarah] Fire master. [Laughs]

[Gary blowing]

I will admit, I messed up.

You don't use a banana leaf
or a big, moist leaf like that

to start a fire on
with magnesium.

It is what it is.

We gotta continue on.
It was a learning lesson.

But this really screwed us up.

All right. We would've
had that locked up, man.

[Exhaling sharply]

- I was totally focused...
- I've never seen you take that long to start a fire, though.

[Gary laughs]

If you always start
them like that...

Well, 'cause I
had all my grass...

or you're letting [bleep]
live rent-free in your head,

and you weren't focused on this.

I'm not overjoyed that I'm back
on track or anything like that.

We... we came in first place,
and we're coming at last place.

There's no excuses
for that. That's just, uh...

that's just poor performance.

All right, dude. Which way?

Uh, we're gonna... we're gonna
push out to that top back corner, so...

[Gary] Top back
corner? All right.

[Intense music playing]

[Inhales sharply] I'm so crossing
my fingers for a meat cache.

[Cheeny] Oh, my
God. We need it so bad.

[Dan] That's a nice-looking
boulder... those are maps!

- [Cheeny] Ah!
- Yeah!

[Jeff] I'm right on their tail.

This was a huge hike. It's
far. Brutal. It's calorie-draining.

And now we have to go look for
caches in this new environment.

- [Dan] "Explore the pools..."
- [Cheeny] "Pools to find a hunting asset."

"Use bushcraft skills
to reach a survival tool."

[Narrator] In zone 3, there
are five hidden caches.

A folding saw, an axe, a pair of
Hawaiian slings, two large pelts,

and a scavenged duiker carcass.

[Cheeny] "Track the bones
through an active hunting ground."

Track the bones. What
are we gonna find there?

- [Cheeny] Probably some food.
- [Dan] Okay. Back up this way?

"Use your survival skills to
earn the resources cached

in the environment around you.

Collect your migration
map on day 21."

I'm just gonna put my stuff down here,
and I'm gonna go try to find some items.

Argh, I'm exhausted,
but the clock is ticking.

I think I'm gonna try to
go for the hunting ground.

That could potentially be meat.

Now, my only hesitation here
is everybody's already agreed

when we get meat, we're
gonna share it with everybody.

So I have to either think it's
coming back to me anyway,

or get this and not
share it with anybody.

That's the only two
strategies for that meat.

Maybe we could track the
bones through the hunting ground.

'Cause we know
that's what Jeff's doing.

[Dan] Jeff is rolling through
here. We know his game is to just

get out there and collect
everything he possibly can.

Now we're at this intersection.

This goes on to the
water and oranges.

[Cheeny] Cool.

[Dan] Maybe, like, 90 paces
until we get to this squiggly part.

[Cheeny] Okay.

I've reached a little
fork in the map here.

One goes left, one goes right.

[Exhaling]

A little over 20 paces.
We're right here now.

- And it looks like it's right in the gorge.
- We're getting to it now,

so... yeah, yeah.

Oh, man, this is a lot.

There are so many trails.

[Tense music playing]

Maybe go a little exploring.

I think I'll be all right with going
out to look for some of these caches.

It's a risk you gotta
take for the reward,

and I am by myself.

So I need to make sure that I do every
single thing to get ahead in this game.

- Gotta get that food. [Laughs]
- [Cheeny] Yeah.

- We gotta be close.
- [Cheeny] Yeah.

Let's just wander around separately.
It's gonna be around here somewhere.

[Cheeny] Okay.

This feels wrong to me.

So I'm gonna go a little
bit back to try to figure out

where my mistake was.

[Matt] This is gonna be
coming up and around.

Looking for a fruit tree.

[Dramatic music playing]

[Cheeny] Hey, Dan!

- Yep!
- [Cheeny] I found bones!

[Dan] Keep quiet. [Laughs]

[Jeff] I look back,
and there's Matt.

[Matt] Better pick up the
slack there, Jeff. Catchin' on ya!

Ha-ha.

- [Matt] What are you looking for?
- [Jeff] Um...

I'm going after the meat.

He's not even
looking at his map.

I think he may not
be the best navigator.

And his best strategy
is to follow Jeff.

[Steven] Running
the whole track.

It's a rough journey.

It's the longest
one we've had yet,

and not only
that, it was uphill.

So, it's real important to
take breathers. Hydrate.

- We can, uh, focus on caches tomorrow.
- [Sarah] Mmm-hmm.

Hey, where you headed?

Uh, we... maps are down yonder.

[Waz] Gotcha.

[Cheeny] Dude, bones.

- [Dan] A lot?
- [Cheeny] Yep.

[Dan speaking]

[Whispering]

- We could shout to Matt or whoever comes up.
- Let's hide these bones.

Stash them, like,
behind that rock.

We're still gonna share.

But I wanna control the sharing
rather than Jeff controlling the sharing.

Yeah.

[Dan] If Matt or anyone else walks
up, we'll holler and have them help us.

Literally anyone else. [Laughs]

- [Tense music playing]
- Is that Matt?

[Cheeny] Matt!

Matt!

- Yep.
- [Dan] Hey, Matt! Come here.

We need help.

- [Jeff] Is that Dan and Cheeny?
- Dan and Cheeny.

[Jeff] Did they
say come to them?

[Matt] I'm not sure.

You want us to come
down, Dan and Cheeny?

[Matt] I'm on my way, guys.

[Whispers] God damn it! [Bleep]

[Dan speaking quietly]

[Tense music playing]

[Mouthing]

[Matt speaking]

[Intense music playing]

[Cheeny] Dude, bones.

- [Dan] A lot?
- [Cheeny] Yep.

Let's hide these bones. Stash
them, like, behind that rock.

[Dan] If Matt or anyone else walks
up, we'll holler and have them help us.

Literally anyone else. [Laughs]

- Is that Matt?
- [Cheeny] Matt!

- Yep.
- [Dan] Hey, Matt! Come here.

We need help.

You want us to come
down, Dan and Cheeny?

- [Bleep]
- [Chuckles] Yeah.

[Mouthing]

Anybody but Jeff. That's
all I care about, honestly.

- [Dan speaking quietly]
- [Cheeny speaking]

[Matt speaking]

[Dan speaking]

- [Matt speaking]
- [Dan speaking]

[Jeff speaking]

[Dan speaking]

[Matt exhales] It's a nice
dark little forest right here.

[Cheeny] Isn't it nice?

[Dan speaking]

[Dramatic music playing]

I thought they were saying
they found something, but they...

- [Jeff] Oh.
- [Matt] They're just on the lower trail.

[Jeff] I'm thinking they
found the animal kill,

or they found an item that
they need help recovering.

And no, they were just
shouting for Matt, I guess.

[Waz] Cheeny.

[Cheeny] Waz.

[Waz] What you guys up to?

[Dan] What's up, Waz?

[Whispering]

- [Waz sighs]
- [Dan] Look for bones.

[Whispering]

- [Waz] Okay.
- [Whispering]

- [Whispers]
- [Dan] Yeah, we got this one.

-[Intense music playing] -[Narrator]
500 feet beneath the crown of Oribi gorge,

there are five caches concealed
by steep and punishing terrain,

set around tributaries
of the Umzimkulu river.

At this elevation, calories
will be harder to come by

and be consumed at nearly
twice the rate as on the valley floor,

forcing survivalists to scavenge
rock pools for bite-sized protein

while pitting them
against prowling leopards.

Gotta go quick.

[Dan] Right now, our
group strategy is to try

to split up, divide and conquer
and get to some of these caches

before Jeff does, because I don't
trust Jeff as far as I can throw him.

What you going after, Waz?

Uh...

High side, by the fishing gear.

Okay, cool.

Whenever I come into a group,
the chatter goes to a minimum.

It's like, "oh.
That guy arrived."

[Dan] I don't know if
we're on the right trail.

[Cheeny] Uh, they
kind of meander now.

[Jeff] You know what? That's
just me getting in their brains,

getting in their
heads a little bit more.

They think they know me, but they
don't know the first thing about me.

And that's my advantage.

[Matt] This lower trail intercepted
with this trail, so we're right here.

Jeff was looking
for this, but now,

I don't know if he
knows where we're at.

[Jeff] The battle lines
have clearly been drawn.

[Tense music playing]

So I bust out a new strategy, and
I'm gonna go find that fishing asset.

- Push up to this?
- No, no. Just keep going up that way.

- [Waz speaking]
- [Matt speaking]

[Waz speaking]

Yeah, so the second
that I tell Jeff, uh,

where I'm going
and what I'm after,

I'm watching him turn around
and... and walk in that direction.

So I know he's going
for the same thing.

[Music continues]

He opens his map up to read it,
and I'm right there, over his shoulder.

It's gotta be demoralizing
for his confidence

that I'm pretty much a
rookie compared to him.

It's this rookie that's just
still out-performing him.

So, I'm... I'm happy planting
these seeds in Jeff's head.

The more that I do it, the
more he's gonna be thinking

maybe he doesn't have what it
takes to make it to the end of this thing.

It says search the pools, right?

[Jeff] Yeah. Uh-huh.

[Narrator] Survivalists must use
their navigation and bouldering skills

to ascend the
cascading river bed,

where they will have to locate the
fishing asset at the bottom of a pool.

[Jeff] We're going into
varying terrain right now.

Uh, clearly the
elevation is gaining.

I'm very skilled with maps,

and clearly, these
topo lines are telling me

that the farther I go upstream,
the steeper it's gonna get.

That's cold, eh?

[Waz] Yeah.

Can't see anything, so unless
it's on the [bleep] bottom...

There's no way.

[Waz] I knew it was a race between
me and him. It's a little bit precarious.

It's hard to know if there's stuff in
the water, if it's up around the water.

And so I was searching every
single one of those rock pools.

But I know it's not gonna be
Jeff that finds it, that's for sure.

[Jeff] On a normal challenge, you would
not be doing stuff like this on day 14.

This is... [exhales]

Very high-energy
intensive, and...

[Exhaling] It's difficult.

- [Steven] Good job, hon.
- [Exhaling] Yeah.

Another migration...

- In the books.
- ...Over and done with.

I feel like after the chaos
of the last migration,

folks were kind of burnt
out by the past ones.

So taking it easy in this situation
is actually a survival advantage.

- Focus on cleaning this up. Make this livable.
- Yeah.

- [Steven] We can, uh, focus on caches tomorrow.
- [Sarah] Mmm-hmm.

[Steven] Sarah's been...
been struggling with the cold,

so her... our
priority number one

is... is find our
spot for shelter.

And we found our camp.

It's cozy. It's tucked away.

It's kind of hidden
from the wind.

We have giant reflecting wall for...
for heat, our fire. And thank goodness.

- [Dan] We're hot on the trail right now.
- [Matt] Yeah.

- Yep. Where's the last one?
- [Dan] 15 feet that way was the last one.

[Matt] Dan and Cheeny
are pretty positive

they were on that bone
active hunting ground trail.

And by cross-referencing
on the map, [clicks tongue]

Looks like they're
in the right spot.

[Dan] There's three of us out here. We
are slamming around, looking for something,

maybe some other leopard
signs in the environment, and...

Something that looks disturbed.

[Narrator] Leopards often
drag their prey into trees,

leaving a trail of bones
and carnage behind.

Survivalists must
use their tracking skills

to locate a duiker
kill hidden above.

- [Dan] Anything, Cheeny?
- No. I didn't see anything this way.

[Matt] Do you think you guys
might have picked it up in the middle?

- [Dan] No. Absolutely not.
- [Cheeny] No, it was definitely the beginning.

- [Matt] Okay.
- [Dan] 100%.

Searching around for, like, an
hour, and we're seeing nothing.

[Matt] You did a good little
trickery, Dan, if you moved that.

[Dan] Oh, yeah.

We were worried he was behind us,
so we hid all the bones in the beginning.

He got greedy. Thinking you found
something so he was going for it.

Dan, Matt and myself were able to hoodwink,
uh, Jeff to get him to go do something else.

Shouldn't be hard to find bones. It's the
only white thing out here besides my ass.

[Dan] And we're the three
that need it the most [chuckling].

[Suspenseful music playing]

There's a bone right here.

- [Dramatic music playing]
- What?

[Cheeny] There's
a bone right here.

- [Dan] Good eye, Cheeny.
- [Cheeny] Hey, I got four of them.

- A-ha!
- [Matt and Dan chuckle]

[Cheeny] There's a jaw bone.

[Matt] Oh, yeah.
We're on the track.

Found a bone trail through
the hunting grounds.

Which means there's some... some sort
of a game stashed at the end of this trail.

We're up a lot higher than
we've been in elevation so far.

And I'm seeing a little
bit more of underbrush.

Because of that, duiker are gonna be the
main game we're gonna be watching for.

- Just need to find another one, huh?
- [Bird calling]

I'm trying to assist
and help in this...

From smelling. [Exhales audibly]

[Inhales and exhales deeply]

Heavy... heavy game
animal smell. [Inhaling]

[Dan] I have to now
out-hunt a leopard

to get close enough
to find this cache.

Could be up that. It looks like a
nice area up there, I wouldn't doubt it.

I am more than happy to
have Matt come and help us out.

You know, Matt is one of the
most skilled, fair people I know.

[Matt inhales] Just got
a whiff of game animal.

This wind right now's swirling.

I can't tell what direction
it would be coming from.

[Cheeny] I mean, the sun's
still pretty high in the sky,

and it's still pretty
warm out, but...

We can't dilly-dally too long out
here. We need to wrap this thing up.

As they say, [bleep]
Or get off the pot.

[Dan] Argh, it's annoying.

We can't keep wasting
calories on this, if we can't find it.

[Cheeny] This is frustrating.

[Dan exhales]

[Cheeny] Yeah, I
didn't see a single thing.

[Tense music builds and fades]

[Dramatic music playing]

[Tense music playing]

[Dan] We've looked
at every direction now.

That way, that way, that
way, that way, that way...

Does it say "a hunting
asset"? Is that what it says?

No. There's meat.

"Track the bones for an
active hunting ground."

- [Matt] You guys, I think we're just...
- [Cheeny] Right there.

[Matt] I think we're just
missing it. I think it's a, uh...

[Dan] It's close.

[Matt] I've learned through the
years that I can smell the distinct smell

when an animal goes down.

I'm using my nose almost
more than my vision at this point.

[Dan] You smell something, Matt?

[Matt] I did get a whiff,
but there's wind swirling,

so I can't tell
where it came from.

[Tense music builds and fades]

How... how much do you
think we're missing it, guys?

[Dan] 20 feet?

[Matt] Less.

- [Dan] Ah, [bleep]!
- [Cheeny exclaims]

- It's a duiker!
- [Matt] Yep.

- [Dan] It was right here.
- [Matt] Sometimes you gotta follow the nose, and, uh...

Not just your sight.

[Dan] Yeah!

A lot of times
on this challenge,

you put in a lot more
effort to get a lot less meat.

This one's smaller
than impala, for sure.

- Thanks, man. We were hoping you'd come along.
- [Matt] Good job.

[Cheeny laughs]

- Nice work, boys.
- [Matt] I'm glad I could help with the, uh...

with the assist.

[Intense music playing]

[Jeff] Waz and I
have been searching

for this asset up here by
the waterfall for a while now.

I wouldn't really call that
a waterfall though, huh?

[Waz] Slowly working my
way down, see what I see.

Oh, you climbed down. Good job.

[Jeff] Yeah. Figure
I'll start on this side.

[Tense music playing]

[Waz] I am pretty confident that, um,
these are the rocks that I'm looking for,

just based off the picture.

Uh, based off the clues.

[Jeff] I paced it out from
the waterfall up there.

And approximately this area
is where the pace has ended.

[Music continues]

[Waz] One, two,
three, eyes on me.

[Music building]

- [Dramatic music playing]
- [Chuckles] Yes.

There it is, baby. There it is.

[Whistling]

- [Waz] Got it, buddy.
- You found it?

- Yep.
- Atta boy.

It's the second item... [chuckling]
He found feet from where I was.

[Chuckling] Yes.

It's always nice, especially when
you're going head-to-head with someone,

it's nice to get that...
that little finish and...

and just, uh, pop ahead of
them right there, at the finish line.

[Waz] Hawaiian
slings. That's it.

- No!
- [Waz] Yeah.

[Jeff] Hawaiian slings! Well...

Wow, Waz!

It's like Christmas, bro.

- And you got two of them.
- [Waz] Yeah.

Wow.

There's nothing like
a good Hawaiian sling.

Get up in the
fish's face... "Pow!"

[Narrator] Hawaiian
slings are spears

that can be triggered by releasing a
band that propels them forward rapidly,

making them ideal for
hunting fish and small animals.

[Waz] This is a huge win.

Coming from last place and then...
and then making up by finding that thing,

and that's... that's an
amazing hunting asset.

We can get, uh, frog, to help

catch fish.

[Waz] So that's
twice I've got you.

You're slacking
there a little bit.

[Jeff chuckles] Yeah?

[Waz] Those little seeds that
I've been planting in his head

that might seem like
nothing in the moment,

but then when you, when you
plant enough of those things,

they're gonna
grow into something,

and that gets in his
head, and he's not able

to think about the
thing that he's doing,

so trying to put
him on tilt a little bit.

I'm gonna head back
down, probably to Gary.

[Jeff speaking]

[Waz] Yeah, fair enough.

- You're going that way?
- Yeah, I think so.

- Good luck, my friend.
- Yeah, you too, buddy.

- Yeah, that's the old smell test on that one.
- We did it!

[Cheeny] Let me
see this little guy.

- Obviously there's not as much on this.
- Obviously not.

[Matt] Hey, that took three
of us a lot of calories to get it,

but we're already trying to
figure out how do we divvy this up

and share it among everybody.

You know, I've fed people on
every challenge I've been on,

this challenge,
it's no different.

Whoever wins this challenge

should be the best survivalist,

not the greediest.

[Dan] Three of us got the,
by far the least, last one, so...

[Matt] Yeah.

[Dan] That's your problem
with taking a little bit,

but I want everyone
to have a equal share.

[Matt] But you do,
for this kind of work,

you do have to take a little...

- [Cheeny] Like a commission?
- [Matt] Yeah.

We have no shelter
or camp set up yet,

and this meat has certain
parts of it that it's got a time limit,

the head of that animal
is gonna spoil quickly,

but we're thinking,
"you know what?

We're on the way back,

let's go looks for that item."

[Dan] Let's find this last
thing immediately and go eat.

Right now, we only have a small
amount of valuable daylight left,

and I'm totally willing to run
around and spend some time

trying to find some caches

before we set up for the night,

and we have to get to some of
these caches before Jeff does.

- [Dan] It says...
- [Cheeny] Mmm-hmm.

"Use bush craft skills to
reach survival tools above you."

[Matt speaking]

I'm gonna say, we kinda see
if there is a trail going right.

- Yeah.
- This way?

[Narrator] Two survival
items are hidden high

on the daunting
Rapakivi granite cliff face.

These rock formations
are often loose

and disintegrate
easily upon touch.

- Ooh, careful, dude.
- Ooh.

Now the icon is definitely over,

like, what would be
water in this dried creek.

[Matt] I see it.

- [Dan] See it?
- [Matt] Yup.

- Where are we going?
- Right here.

[Cheeny] Sure enough, we see two
burlap bags hanging from a little cliff.

[Matt] Well, I mean, we
were excited for find 'em,

only to realize that there is no
way from the top to get 'em down.

[Dan speaking]

Right now I'm looking for
the advanced survival tool,

where it's says,
"search the high ground."

And I believe that these
rocks here, this cliff face,

it's similar to what
is shown on the map.

My heart tells
me this is the rock.

Uh, it's been a few days
since I found an item,

and I'm starting
to get discouraged.

I have to find this
thing right now.

This is an excruciating
search for this survival tool.

I've been going non-stop,

100% energy.

I'm continuing to search high,

looking in the trees,

see if something could
be tied up in a tree.

Oh, [bleep], I found it!

[Laughs] I found it!

I found it!

Oh!

This is yours.

What have we got...
oh, no, we don't.

We have two?

We have two hides?

What?

Everyone knows how
important these items are

that are cached
in the environment.

I'm back!

[Exclaims]

[Laughs] You kidding me?

We have two hides. Oh!

Oh, baby.

A-ha!

Hey, four team, what's up?

This is the best, greatest
item I could hope for right now.

I've got one large oryx hide,

one large kudu hide,

and I have my original hide,

so I am not only
survival item rich,

I am hide rich.

These pelts are
gonna act as shelter,

bedding, [chuckles]
Insulation while sleeping,

and they're gonna
act as clothing,

and cordage, and
so many other items.

I'm thinking I wanna trade, I know
that these hides are very valuable.

You know how I'm
gonna sleep tonight?

Like this.

[Exclaims in a funny voice]

[Matt] Right above all our heads

is the two cache
items on this cliff.

We can't climb on
this crumbly wall,

and it's solid rock around us,

if we make a slip,

somebody is gonna
get seriously hurt,

probably pulled
out of this challenge.

- [Matt] Dan, for now just set that in the shade.
- [Dan] Yeah.

[Matt] Now, since we
don't trust everybody...

- I don't either.
- ...I'm gonna hide this around the corner.

[Dan] Thank you.

- Okay.
- [Matt] Okay.

[Dan] That wall
is sketchy as hell.

[Cheeny] That is so crumbly.

[Matt] Yeah, it is
12, 15 feet up there,

let's be careful, like, I
mean, there is two items,

it doesn't make sense for each team
to try to, like, go after it themselves.

- [Dan] Don't forget, we're two teams, right?
- Yeah.

And whatever it is, we share it,

- I think so, too.
- Yeah. Yeah.

All right, let's do it.

[Dan] We have to
devise a creative way

to get to the top to
get these items down.

[Cheeny] There is no way
to approach from the top,

it's just too dangerous.

[Dan] And there is hard
solid rock at the bottom.

And the only way
to get up there is

to make some sort of
contraption from the bottom.

Find a giant log, we
could just pop it in place.

Oh, there is a
giant driftwood log...

- Let go look at that.
- ...Right in there.

- Yeah.
- Yeah.

One second, gotta go slow here.

All right.

It's good length, I think.

[Matt] I can hold that for you.

[Dan] All right, I can climb up.

[Cheeny] The plan
is to climb up Matt

using some logs as handrails.

Okay.

- [Grunts] Sorry, Matt.
- No worries.

[Dan] At the time point from
what we just went through

with the migration,

we're ruined, we're
so calory depleted that

it's starting to make
my brain foggy.

Okay.

I'm gonna have to pull on this,

- I'm afraid it's gonna tip back, okay?
- [Matt] Yup.

Nope, I'll... we'll
put pressure.

- [Dan] I'm gonna step on this one here, too.
- [Matt] Yup, you're solid.

Okay, I'm in place.

-[Grunts] -[Matt] Long as
you don't drop the axe on us.

-[Laughs] -[Dan] It's
hooked on [bleep] Good.

- [Grunts] Got it.
- [Cheeny] Nice.

- Here you go, Matt, someone.
- Got it.

- [Dan] Coming down.
- [Cheeny] Yeah, we got you.

- Yay, I'm not dead.
- [Cheeny] Yay!

- Not today.
- Not today.

- Not today, Satan.
- I didn't even rub my genitals on you yet, Matt.

Hey, still... there's
still the next one.

- There still one more.
- [Cheeny] It's not over.

[Jeff] I'm thinking
I wanna trade,

but I'm also not gonna
make a stupid trade deal.

An even trade is
what I'm looking for,

if I can't get that...

...I may call that trade off,

because it may prove
much more valuable

later on in the challenge
in these other locations.

Uh, I see some naked
people, who is up there?

Hey.

Steven, Sarah, is that you guys?

Oh, Jeff.

- Hey.
- [Sarah] Hey.

- [Steven] What up?
- [Sarah] What have you got?

[Jeff] I found a
couple of hides.

- [Sarah] Couple?
- [Jeff] Yeah, two.

- Nice.
- How are you and Steven hanging in?

[Inhales] Cold.

It's like one side
of you is either, like,

super burned up and the
other side is freezing cold,

you kinda, like, rotate like
a little rotisserie chicken.

- Yeah.
- Eh.

Hey, man, if you entertain the
idea of trading me one of those hides,

I'm totally down.

Yeah.

[Jeff] Immediately, she says,

"oh, you know, if you ever wanna
trade, and I've been cold at night."

Well, if that's the case, maybe
you oughta been out on the trail

looking for some items

that maybe would
help your situation,

because they have
nothing to trade,

they have nothing to give
except the bow and arrows.

I don't know how
you feel, I mean,

right, you got the one bow.

- Yeah.
- Yeah.

[Sarah] The number one thing
running through my mind is that

if it was anybody but Jeff,

I know for a fact that
they'll be willing to at least

let me borrow the
hides while we're here.

As soon as I realized that, "oh,
wait, it's Jeff that has the hides,"

I knew that there was nothing that I
could do that would improve my situation

because he's just
not that kind of person.

- [Jeff] All right, guys, I'm gonna head back.
- [Sarah] Mmm-hmm.

- [Steven] Love you, be safe.
- [Jeff] Love you guys.

Yeah, stay safe.

You think I'm just gonna
give one of these up for free?

This is a competition,
and I came to play.

[Sarah speaking]

- [Steven speaking]
- [Sarah speaking]

- [Steven speaking]
- [Sarah] No.

[Gary] Hey.

- Found us some hides?
- [Jeff] Found a couple of hides, yeah.

- [Gary] Holy moly.
- [Jeff] Yeah.

- So...
- [Gary] You got a bed and blankets.

- I do, a bed and blanket.
- Yeah, that's awesome.

You just got them now?

- Yeah.
- [Waz] But you already have one as well, right?

- I... I do.
- [Gary] That's three now.

- I do have one, so... yeah.
- Three hides.

Well, I mean, we're getting to
the point now in the challenge

- where people are gonna have stuff to trade.
- [Waz] Yeah.

I, I know you
wanted to, you know,

avoid the trade talk, and
no disrespect on my part.

[Waz] No, I don't,
absolutely not.

He's asking again about
trading and that sort of stuff.

I'm pretty close to just
cutting Jeff off from everything,

to be honest with you.

And he's gonna sit
on three pelts while,

you know, there
are women out here

that are freezing
cold at nigh time,

he's not using three pelts,
why doesn't he just lend one?

It doesn't make any sense to me,

he's showing who
he is as a person.

If you guys ever
did think, like,

you know, "maybe
we'll want a hide,

and we only need one of these."

- It's just...
- I'm never gonna hide from anyone, Jeff.

- [Laughs]
- Definitely not gonna trade.

- So, uh...
- We, we hear you, yeah.

- I mean, yeah.
- Yeah, I mean it's just...

I get it, that's cool, if wanted
one of those, I'd trade something.

- We don't...
- I... I haven't even put thought into it yet.

- I was...
- because we don't even know

what the dynamic partners
is... it's gonna change on day 21.

It could become
solo, we don't know.

[Gary] 'Cause for
the first 21 days,

you and your partner
must survive together,

your fates are connected,
but it doesn't mean...

...that something can't be worked out
in there, still, you know, who knows?

We have no idea, no idea.

- And...
- but, you guys, congrats.

- Yeah, congrats to you.
- Congrats.

Dude, you're gonna
be comfy. [Laughs]

[Jeff] You know what?

I might be starving, but
I'm gonna be comfortable.

I was steps away from Waz
when he found those spears,

he didn't offer one of
'em, and there was two.

I hope those slings keep
you warm at night, Waz.

[Gary] Majority of
the people being cold,

and you think Jeff would
give 'em a pelt, right?

He's got three more
hides, and he has friends.

[Dan] This climate is really
taxing me physically and mentally.

[Cheeny] Uh, do you
want that on the other side?

- That's okay.
- [Cheeny] Okay.

Let's do that first.

The second item
now is a little bit higher,

a little bit of a
sketchier spot,

one wrong slip, your ticket out.

[Dan] So sapped of energy,
like, completely sapped,

but you can't stop and
rest, you have to keep going.

If I fall back, I
mean, I'm done.

Step up.

Okay, this is the scary part.

Saying a few hails
Marys on my way up.

Oh, God! [Grunts]

[Grunts]

Oh, no, untie it.

[Cheeny] Ooh, careful, dude.

You need your knife?

- Ow, the knife wouldn't hurt, can you give me one?
- [Matt] Yup.

[Dan] Oh, watch out, watch out.

Cheeny, you're gonna have to
step on my leg and hand it to him.

- [Dan] Oh, hurry.
- [Cheeny] Yeah.

Just stand right there
for a minute, bud.

Here, rescue is coming.

[Dan] Watch my,
my right foot, guys.

- [Cheeny] Yeah.
- [Matt] I got it, I got it, solid.

- [Dan] Quick, quick, quick.
- [Matt] Drop.

[Water splashing]

[Narrator] For this competition,

the PSR or primitive
survival rating,

weighs an individual's
survival skill and items collected

to determine the
likelihood of becoming

the last one standing.

This is a competition,
and I came to play.

[Narrator] Gary
started migration strong,

but struggled under pressure.

[Waz] Gary, it's all right, bud.

No, it's not [bleep] all right.

[Narrator] When he lost focus,

it cost his team critical time.

[Gary] I was under
the impression

that I was [bleep] bringing it.

You understand that, right?
That makes sense to you.

[Narrator] As a result,

his PSR drops from 8.3 to 8.1.

Jeff failed to locate
the fishing assets...

[Laughs] Yeah!

[Narrator] ...But
quickly pivoted

to score his first
cache since zone one.

Oh, baby.

[Narrator] The new items give him
an advantage against the elements...

I'm back!

[Narrator] ...Raising
his PSR from 9.2 to 9.4.

Fire-hardened. We're good.

[Narrator] Dan finished
first in the challenge...

- Proud of you.
- [Cheeny] Proud of you, bud.

[Narrator] ...Recovered a
significant source of protein...

- Yeah.
- It's a duiker!

[Narrator] ...And continues
to climb for more assets.

[Dan] Saying a few hail
Marys on my way up.

This is dangerous. Oh, God.

[Narrator] This win streak
causes he PSR to rise

from 9.0 to 9.2.

To see all of the
survivalists PSR rankings,

[Dan] Oh, God!

-[Grunts] -[Matt] Ooh,
watch out, watch out.

[Dan] Oh, hurry.

[Matt] Just stand right
there for a minute, bud.

Here, rescue is coming.

[Dan] Watch my right foot, guys.

[Dan] This is not just, like,

this, it's legitimately
dangerous.

If I fall back, I
mean, I'm done.

One second, gotta go slow here.

- Got it.
- [Cheeny] Cool.

[Dan] Knife.

- All right.
- Quick, quick, quick.

Drop, drop it.

- Drop.
- [Exhales]

[Cheeny] Step, step
where ever you need to step.

[Dan] Yup.

Okay, I'm gonna
step on Matt again.

And I'm done.

That could have
gone wrong so quickly.

[All cheering]

[Matt speaking]

- See what you've won.
- Let's see what we've got.

Yeah.

Okay, I'm about to open it.

- Oh, what you got? What you got there?
- [Bleep] Yes.

Oh, dude, it's gonna be good
to clear our camp out with.

Little, little saw action.

- Ooh.
- [Dan] Ooh, that's a sexy saw.

- [Matt] It's gonna be handy.
- [Cheeny] I know what I want for Christmas.

[Matt] We have a lot of work, that's
gonna make it less work for sure.

[Dan] What have we got
here? You can hardly guess.

And this, this I could tell, I could
pretty much tell by the shape.

I can't tell.

[Dan] Nice little axe.

- These two options are gonna be nice.
- [Cheeny] Yeah.

- You guys already have one these, so...
- we do.

So I feel I, even...
you know, make sense,

- I'll take this one, we share this...
- you take this.

- We'll share, yeah, obviously, we're sharing it, yeah.
- [Cheeny] Yeah.

- [Cheeny] This is...
- [Dan] I'm so happy.

[Cheeny] I'm going
down in history.

[Matt] Well, it's time
to process this duiker.

I was thinking, uh, I'm gonna
walk down and take on Jeff.

- Is that cool with you?
- Yeah, probably.

[Gary] This is the last week I'm actually
connected to Waz on this challenge,

so I'm kinda working on
trying to be neutral with Jeff,

because I don't know what the
next part of the challenge holds.

I don't know if I'm gonna
be tied to someone,

I don't know if I'm
gonna be alone,

I don't know what it's gonna be.

Hey.

- [Jeff] Yo, what's up?
- What's up, buddy?

[Jeff] Come on in, bud.

- Good to see you, man.
- I just came to check on you.

- Yeah, thank you. I appreciate that.
- Yeah.

Yeah, I, um, I
felt a little, uh...

...ostracized and outcast

from, uh, from the group.

I'm not an idiot, right?

So what, what are people saying?

That I'm not playing the
way that they would like me to.

- 'Cause I feel like I play...
- as much sharing.

As much sharing and giving.

- Sharing and giving.
- And giving. Yeah.

Okay, so people are turned off

that I've opened up
the trade embargo,

and they want things
to just go out for free.

Yeah.

This is a competition,

it is every man and
woman for themselves,

and I don't owe
anybody anything.

You wanna give me
your Hawaiian sling?

- Can I have that? Is that...
- [Laughs] No, no, no.

Please?

- I... how does this work?
- Well, that was funny.

Some stuff is sensible to
share and some stuff isn't.

I think I'm doing pretty
good being neutral with Jeff.

I'm not condemning Jeff as much

for the way he's playing.

Well, here's
what I say, is, uh...

"Jeff's still playing
by the rules,

but now, Stacey
can take him out."

[Jeff] Wait, what?

One of my strategies
was gonna be,

I was talking to Stacey about,

I said, "like, if
you're miserable..."

- Mmm-hmm.
- I said,

"just realize that don't..."

- I said, I said, "don't stick around for..."
- No, you didn't.

You tried to get my
partner to tap me?

- [Gary laughs]
- Holy [bleep], Gary!

- [Laughing]
- Whoa!

Listen, listen, I...

holy [bleep], and people are,

people are pissed at me
for not giving [bleep] away...

-[Laughs raucously] -...When
you're trying to get my partner to tap?

Yeah, man, I'm playing,
I'm playing by the rules.

Oh, don't... that
is by the rules.

[Gary] I'm known
for speaking up,

I thought it would
be fun to tell him.

That could come back
to bite me in the butt,

but now Jeff is informed.

That was just
part of the strategy,

because think about it,
on a game level that's,

that's two for one...
two people gone for one.

- It's good, yeah.
- And then also,

you're hardworking
and hungry for it,

- so a really hungry person gone.
- Mmm-hmm.

Yup. Yup.

I can't believe the bomb
that Gary just dropped on me.

People actively want me gone,

they're stressing, they're
worried, they're anxious.

I think it's great that
everyone is worried about me.

I'm in their heads,
I'm in their souls,

and that's where I'm gonna stay.

You know, we might
be partners on the next...

we might be, we might be.

And believe me, I'm
thinking about that, too.

- We don't even know what's gonna happen.
- No idea.

[Gary] Jeff could be competitive,
and if you end up with Jeff,

and you're me,

then you're armed
to the teeth to hunt...

...and you're sleeping good.

- Thanks for paying a visit, I appreciate it.
- Yeah.

- It was nice talking to you, good touching base.
- You too, man.

Have a good one.

- Okay, I'll talk to you later.
- All right.

I forgive you, Gary.

[Dan] We just slammed out
two major accomplishments,

we're just, like, still
riding on this high.

So once we get everything off,

then we'll figure out
how to divvy it up.

[Matt] Did a pretty
big hike today,

and, uh, I'm wore out, the
challenge seems to never stop,

there's no rest, period.

The knife, so it's not, not,
like, incredibly sharp, innit?

[Dan] No, it really

dulled up quick.

This knife is dull,

it's not cutting right,

it's not the right kinda knife

to field dress
something like this,

it's tough.

The thing is pretty small,

so I guess you
could give, like, uh,

a front shoulder
to Waz and Gary,

and a front shoulder
to Steven and Sarah,

and then for the most part,
you guys will have a back leg,

I'll get a back leg,

and then we'll each have,
like, a half of those ribs,

- and I'll help you get those, you know...
- [Dan speaking]

[Matt] To be fair on it,

we'll try to scrape some of
the meat off the hide, maybe,

and then we'll give Jeff,
like, a side of rib or something.

[Dan speaking]

- [Exclaims]
- You okay?

[Bleep]

That's, that's pretty bad.

[Bleep]

Yeah, it's a pretty...

- [Man] Let it...
- [Matt]...Deep.

I just jacked myself up.

[Man speaking]

[Matt sighs] Yup.

The knife slipped through and
hit my knuckle so hard that, uh,

you can pretty much see
the joint like a turkey leg.

[Dan] Dude, don't kid
with it, or your dead.

[Matt] My finger is
bleeding like a sieve.

This is not good.

I'm not gonna pass
out, but I don't love it.

I'm just worried that it's gonna
take him out of this challenge.

All right.

- It's pretty bad.
- Oh, yeah.

Ah. Yup.

I'm in big trouble.
