as to who could be
haunting this island.

Berry: It could be military.

It could be family
that lived here.

It could be sick patients.
It's staggering.

There are two mass graves
on the island.

We don't know where they are.

Really?

There's a crash.

A jolt.

We just want to make sure
everyone has moved on

from this space,

that if you were a victim
of that tragedy,

There it is.
That's that.

Bruni: Adam and I are on our way
to the rose island lighthouse,

just off the coast
of newport, rhode island.

This 150-year-old beacon
sits on fort hamilton,

a military base dating back
to the revolutionary war.

Six miles from land,

this location has a dark
and bloody past.

Once used as
a quarantine hospital,

rose island is believed to be
filled with unmarked graves.

Today, it's open to the public,

where people can come to learn
about the history

of the lighthouse
and the island itself.

I can see the lighthouse
right there.

So the rose island lighthouse
has a very interesting history.

Years ago, there was a huge
cholera epidemic in newport.

And they used the island
to put cholera victims on

and isolate them
so they weren't contagious

to everyone else in newport.

There were a number
of deaths, cholera-related.

So my question is,
why us and why now?

Well, I think at this point,
you know,

they have overnight guests that
stay out there by themselves.

Yeah.
And they're having experiences.

And they can't leave.

Once you're out there,
you're out there.

You're not leaving.

So any paranormal activity
is a big deal

because there is no one
out there to help you.

So they want to nip whatever
is happening out there now

in the bud because it's gotten
a lot more intense for people.

So I think
that's where we come in.

The isolation is one thing.

And there's no going back.

No. You're, like,
so close yet so far. Yeah.

We're gonna concentrate
on three main areas...

so the lighthouse itself
and the barracks,

which are over there,
and the shoreline.

But joan's meeting us.

She's one of the staff members
with the lighthouse.

She's got a ton of information

as far as the history
and what's been going on there.

So, down that way.

We are completely alone.

There's no one here to help us.

when was the lighthouse
itself built?

Joan: Well, it was commissioned
in 1869.

Was it families that lived here,

like, lighthouse keepers
and their families?

It was.

Most of our stories
come from this gentleman.

His name was wanton chase,
and he lived here as a child.

When wanton was born,
he had a respiratory problem.

His parents asked
if he could live out here.

They thought the fresh air
might help his breathing.

He lived here
for about seven years.

A few years ago,
someone had an experience.

They saw this presence
of this young boy

coming out of the lighthouse,
running down the hill.

- That's insane.
- Wow.

His grandparents
were the keepers here...

charles curtis
and christina curtis.

Charles curtis was here
from the late 1800s

until about 1918.

So he was one of the longest
lighthouse keepers

that served here.

Bruni: Wow.

I mean, is there
any paranormal activity

that's happened in this space itself?
Oh, yeah.

The assistant keeper lived
on the second floor.

So they would change shifts
around midnight.

And a lot of people have said
that they've experienced

hearing footsteps
from the tower.

And they usually stop
right in front of the stove here

because they said
when charles curtis

got done with his shift,

he would warm up
a cup of hot milk for himself.

- Mm.
- Wow.

And they say that
that's actually

where they hear
the footsteps stop.

- Okay.
- Hmm. Okay.

And it sounds like boots or...

- yeah.
- Okay.

- Shuffling almost.
- Okay.

Almost like a shuffling sound.

- Okay.
- Alright.

A lot of people say when
they stay here overnight also

on the back window over here,

they have actually seen

what looks like somebody
in the window,

like a shadow of a person.

Berry: These windows are
pretty high off the ground.

I doubt it would be a person.

- Yeah.
- Okay.

And also people have said
they've heard

what sounds like somebody
tapping on the windows.

Sounds like it's coming
from outside.

And they don't know
if they're just trying

to get someone's attention,
but they go out.

There's nobody there.

And this is at night.

This is mostly at night, yeah.

Alright, we'll follow you
to the barracks.

Joan: But this is where
they stored the torpedoes.

Berry: Oh, wow.
And so people stay here now.

This is one of the bedrooms.

Bruni: And are they
having activity out here?

This is where most of
the activity is, I would say.

Oh, okay.

In the early 1800s,
almost up till the civil war,

they used this
as a quarantine hospital.

And we think that's why there is
so much activity out here.

There are two mass graves
on the island.

We don't know where they are.

- Okay.
- Really?

Bruni: Why did this become
a quarantine hospital?

Well, we're a mile from both
jamestown and newport.

And when there was cholera
and typhoid,

they brought them here, and
many, many people died out here.

Okay, is there an estimate as to
how many people were out here?

We don't know.
No? Okay.

We don't know.
Wow.

A lot of people
that have stayed here

have had some really
unusual experiences.

They say that
they've smelled tobacco.

One lady told me
she had that feeling

that somebody was watching her,

and a lot of people have been
touched in these rooms.

I actually had a mother
and daughter

stay in this room one night.

The daughter said
she kept hearing

someone crying and moaning.

She actually went outside
'cause she couldn't tell

if it was coming
from inside or outside.

Berry: The last thing you want
are guests

running around the island
in the middle of the night.

- Yeah, exactly.
- That's right.

Did they describe the voice
like male or female?

- Both I've heard.
- Okay.

Bruni: Poor things.

joan: Later on,
in the early 1950s...

or actually the later 1950s,

there was two tankers
that collided,

and the one ship...

there was the graham
and the gulfoil.

And the graham had 650,000
gallons of gasoline on it.

We believe it was in this area
here past the bridge.

It was a very dense, foggy day.

It was August 7, 1958.

And the two ships, they collided
and caught fire immediately.

Berry: Oh.

And the one ship drifted off,

and the other one
floated to the area

pretty close
to the lighthouse here.

They said when
the ships drifted,

the walls were actually hot.

And so they had to evacuate.

- Okay.
- And again, that's where...

most of the bodies were found
out in the water.

But one of them was
brought up on land here.

Do they... I mean, do people say
there's activity here?

Do they see people out here
on the shoreline?

They see what looks
like a lantern light.

A lot of people
have investigated,

thinking that people
are coming on the island

while they're here.

And there is nobody there.

But they do see...

it's a very, very pale
kind of a light that they see,

and that it flickers
and that it moves around a lot.

- Hm. Okay.
- Wow.

- Yeah.
- Interesting.

- We'll look for that.
- For sure.

Do you ever have guests who want
to leave because they're...

yes, we have.

We've had people
even cancel because of that.

I had a family
that was here one time.

She looked pretty disheveled
the next day,

and I asked her
how her night was.

And she said that she was up
all night

because of the activity
that she felt and she heard.

It was more what she heard.

What would you like us
to accomplish here

while we're here?

I guess I just am interested
in knowing, you know,

what has permeated
in this ground here

and in these buildings.

I mean, just to give you guys
some answers so that, you know,

if people
do experience activity,

they're not gonna be
freaked out by it, you know?

And they're gonna want to return.
That's right.

If they know
what they're dealing with,

then maybe they'll
feel more comfortable.

I agree.

And that's what I'm hoping for, too.

You know, joan is just
one of many people

who care deeply
about this lighthouse.

And now you have guests
hearing and seeing things,

being touched,

and even lured outside
in the middle of the night.

Is it someone who passed away
here during the cholera outbreak

or one of the people
who died tragically

when one of the ships exploded?

There are so many possibilities

as to who could be
haunting this island.

You know, you come out here and
you kind of get that sense of,

"I'm here, and the only way
I can get off this island

is when someone decides to come
and pick me up on their boat."

it's a little intimidating
because, you know,

we know there's no one else
on this island with us.

So whatever we see or hear,
we know that other live people

are not going to be
the cause of it.

Let's put ourselves in the mind
of someone being quarantined.

You're isolated.
You're alone.

What if we isolated ourselves?

If we use the spirit box
in that space that has...

those are bombproof barracks.

They're four-foot cement walls.

And so there's gonna be, like,

no interference
from the outside.

So it'll probably be
extra-pure white noise.

Let's get our stuff together.

Let's put the sls together.

And we'll head out there.

We have a lot of ground
to cover trying to figure out

who could potentially
be haunting this place.

We're headed to the barracks
because joan mentioned

that the barracks is the area

that is the most active
for them.

It's so isolated because even
though you can see newport...

it's right there.

But until someone comes to
get you or if it's the winter,

like, the last thing you want
to do is get on the water.

and I sort of
just walk out here.

And then something literally
tugged on my jacket.

In there, I just... I was
hearing a ton of voices.

Like, I was hearing
all kinds of things.

There was a male and a
female talking. Okay.

I mean, I heard things.

Like, I heard a weird male voice
at one point.

I couldn't make out
every saying.

And then I heard other voices,

but it wasn't as if I was having
a conversation with anyone,

obviously, 'cause I wasn't
asking questions.

But there were moments where I said,
"reach out. Say something to me."

but I got things,
like, boat-related things.

So let's go back up
to the lighthouse.

I think it was
a good first night.

We got one extraordinarily
clear evp that said, "mother."

which it great.

You know, something
was talking to us,

but unfortunately, it didn't
really give us a solid answer

of who or what or why.

We did get some instances
that seemed like

maybe something
was coming through.

You know, I definitely
seemed more focused

on the boat accident.

The positive of this whole experience
is that we are having activity.

We're having activity

that correlates to factual
information that we know.

We just have to push it
a little bit further

and hopefully get
some solid answers.

So tomorrow we'll just start
hitting research hard

and then come back in here
armed with a plan.

So he must have been
wanton's grandfather.

the tanker crash.

Like, you can see
how massive this was.

I mean, that's incredible.

I just heard an explosion.

all the people on board.

Oh, here's the ones
who lost their life.

Okay, I have the full list of
everybody who lost their lives.

Yeah. We can use those
names at least tonight.

Yeah. And honestly,
it would be interesting to do that,

like, down on the beach.

This is huge.

Yeah, this is a big deal.

So last night we heard voices

that pointed towards
the ship explosion,

but no one called out directly.

Hopefully using these names
on the beach

where joan says
people see something

like a lantern
swinging back and forth,

we can get some answers.

gonna be worse.

because we were made aware

of an accident
that happened nearby

over where that bridge is.

Two large ships collided,

the hardest part in all this.

I'm sure if we're picking up,
like, an actual spirit

or if we're picking up energy.

I don't know. Maybe it's all
residual energy at this point.

It's just, like,
permeating the island.

This island has seen so much.

So here's my thought process.

If we bring chip coffey
up to a lighthouse,

he's gonna know
he's going to a lighthouse.

So we can't blindfold him
and put him in a boat.

And so what if we
have him meet us tomorrow

before coming out here?

'cause he has no idea
where he's headed.

And we'll bring some artifacts
from the lighthouse,

so we can bring some
of these pictures in here

and see if he picks up
on any of that.

What's more interesting
is he said "still there"

when looking at the picture
of wanton chase.

Wanton lived with
his grandparents,

charles and christina curtis,
on the island as a young boy.

In the past,
we've seen spirits manifest

in the form of when
they were happiest in life.

Is it possible he's the child
figure people have seen?

And it's a child running on
something like this, happy.

someone had an experience.

They saw this presence
of this young boy

the island's tragic episodes.

But it made enough
of an impression on the space

that you knew it happened.

I get the residual energy
of the fact

that something happened here
that was catastrophic.

but I don't feel like

any of the souls or spirits

of anyone who might have
been involved in that...

from the tanker accident.

It could be possible
that the answers we're getting

during the spirit box
are more of a residual energy

from the event.

We believe that something like
that, an accident like that,

can leave
residual energy behind.

And, yes, it could be
permeating on this island.

And chip picked up on that.

Now we need to identify
the three entities chip sensed.

So, chip, I do want to tell you

that the c.C. Name once again
was, like, right on the money,

because they believe
that one of the ghosts here

is one of the former
lighthouse keepers,

and his name was charles curtis.

So the c.C. Name
was right on the money.

But the other thing to mention
is that his grandson,

wanton chase,

lived here until he was 7

and was obsessed
with this place.

And so we're wondering if you
picked up on his childlike self

because he loved
this lighthouse so much,

and I guarantee
his happiest time in life

were his time spent
on this island.

I kind of picked up
his memories.

Exactly.
Or his spirit.

Like, we've seen spirits
of people appear

as they were as children

because that was what
they wanted to come back as.

- Wow.

And so we think
you might have keyed into him.

We think his grandfather,
who is the lighthouse keeper.

So who's mother?

I don't know. It could be
anybody using that term.

I'm kind of thinking
maybe his wife.

Her initials

and christina curtis

were the keepers here.

- It makes sense.

Alright, so now we got to figure
out if charles curtis is here.

And so I think what
we were gonna try tonight,

because you felt like
he had an affinity

towards his study here,

we were thinking
that maybe we could try

instigating him to do something,

because at night,
his trigger to, like, go up

and put the lighthouse on
was a cannon fire

saying it was sunset.

And that would tell him,
"okay, it's time for me

to go up
and light the light."

I'm gonna try to play
a loud cannon sound.

box while this is happening?

if that instigates

any activity in the space.

This has been, like, just
a very surreal experience for us

being able to not only
investigate a lighthouse,

which we've done in the past...
Right.

...But being, like,
on the island

and being the only people on
the island with the lighthouse,

it's been a real treat,
so thank you for having us.

As we investigated,
we didn't get any solid evidence

of anyone from the quarantine
hospitals being here still,

which is good.

And so we have chip coffey,
who is a psychic medium.

And so he came in.

He picked up
on the tanker accident.

He said, "I keep wanting to talk
about a boat and a fire.

Is there a boat on fire?"

picked up on the energy
of something catastrophic

had happened,

but he didn't pick up
on individual people

that may have been here.

It makes sense
because when something happens

that's tragic in an area,

even if the spirits aren't
necessarily lingering there,

that feeling can remain.

And that's good to know.
That is.

He picked up on
an older gentleman and a child.

And when he said...
when he brought up the child,

it was very much
like a whimsical child,

almost like a playful, imaginary
childhood kind of child,

which was very interesting
to us.

We strongly suspect
that wanton chase is here.

What we've seen in
other investigations

is that sometimes people come
back as when they were happiest,

and sometimes
that's their childhood.

The next avenue we wanted
to explore

was the potential
for charles curtis

haunting the space.

So chip picked up
on the initials c.C.

He's like,
"the initials c.C. Are big."

and so christina curtis
and charles curtis.

So they both had
c.C. Initials.

And so for chip to pick
that up right off the bat...

That's amazing.

So we played the sound
of a cannon firing.

We heard the sound
of footsteps upstairs

after that cannon fire happened.

We were like,
"you can come down."

and he says, "coming down,"
and you hear footsteps.

- Yeah.
- That's crazy.

- Isn't it crazy?
- Wow.

And so that experience
was like, okay.

What do you think about that?

Oh, I think it's wonderful
because I hope he is watching.

And I think he is happy
about everything here.

So that's kind of
rewarding to hear.

Obviously, there's
a lot of history here.

But I would say
that mr. Curtis

is an essential part
of the history here

and still very much
watching over this lighthouse.

That's such a good feeling,
actually.

I've always felt
that kind of presence

and that someone
overseeing still,

and, you know,
we try to live up to that,

everybody that has come and gone
throughout the years

just working here
to kind of maintain that.

And I do feel like
he is watching over

to see what we're doing.

It's a really special thing
you guys have.

It's quite apparent that joan
is just so relieved

that we confirmed
that charles curtis is here

still manning this lighthouse
to this day.

And honestly,
I couldn't think of a more,

like, quintessential
new England ghost.

While this island has definitely
seen its share of tragedy,

I think that what
outshines that all

is just the sheer beauty
of the space

and charles curtis
still watching over it.

And that's a great thing.
