JEFF: I was actually coming down
the stairs.

Somebody kicked me.

He said that the land that was
left would be dark and bloody.

- [ Gasps ]
- What?

Something is, like,
wrapping around my left leg.

Adam,
I found something.

There was an entire riot.

Three African-American men
were killed.

Oh **** something
just **** touched my face.



- Really?
- Yeah.

I mean, is there a mark
on my face?

I don't think it can get
any clearer with its intentions.

BRUNI: Adam and I are headed
to the Hales Bar Dam

in Marion County, Tennessee.

The dam was a huge part of this
community when it was open,

and there's so much history
affiliated with it.

And so people
are just fascinated,

and they love being able
to go in there

and kind of check it out.

The dam was built more than
100 years ago

to help tame
the Tennessee River,

but by the late '60s,

after decades
of emergency repairs

to the crumbling structure,

it completely flooded
the surrounding area.

Jeff, the person
that we're meeting,

he owns and operates
a historical tour business

in what's left of the dam
and uses the extra space

as a functioning marina
and boatyard.

They have people coming in
to take historical tours,

and they even have, like, kids
coming in for field trips.

They've always had some
paranormal activity at the dam,

and they've been
okay with it.

But now they are having
issues with something.

They're being aggressive,
being very dark.

Jeff says he was
almost killed there.

He was actually pushed
down the stairs.

That's a big deal.

I can't imagine how anyone
can do a tour

with that kind of activity
happening around them.

I wonder
what changed there.

I don't know, but they're
worried about their safety.

I'm always really compelled
when a person

who runs a haunted location
comes to us and is like,

"Help us."

For something
to freak them out

just shows
how important it is

that we get in there
and help them.

So, you took over
the property when?

We've had it two years
in March,

and we've been cleaning up
and we've done tours.

You know,
daytime and nighttime.

What's the primary use
for this building?

Okay, in here,
it's storage.

You know, for boat storage
for the marina.

There was racks
on this whole wall,

and all that's come down.

We've been cleaning the place,
you know,

just kind of getting back
to the historical part,

and it's been work.

It's clear Jeff isn't just
worried about his business.

He really cares
about this place, too.

- When they closed it, right.

What does it sound like?

Uh, it sounds almost like
it's got a rhythm to it,

almost like a drum.

What's this, uh,
whirlpool situation here?

It's just a natural current
that comes through the building.

There's a lot of folklore
about whirlpools,

energy that's created
by them.

Some people theorize that
paranormal entities

feed off large sources of energy
in order to grow stronger.

This is a big and powerful
whirlpool,

so this could be concerning.

Now, there's things that are
going on up there now, too?

Yeah.
The second floor's real crazy.

Now, we saw
on this little ledge...

...was a shadow figure.

And a lot of people
are getting scratched,

people getting choked.

How long ago was this?

So whatever's up there
is violent?

Seeing figures
and hearing voices

isn't unusual in a place
with a lot of activity,

but physical attacks
are something else all together.

And activity ramped up
in the last three months.

That's a major concern.

This is the bathroom
I don't go into.

It was standing in there
in the little shower cubby.

It's a pulsating static,

and I stood my ground
and went to push it,

and it had a quick pulse,
the static, towards me,

and it grabbed my arm,
and it was like cold brick,

and real rough,
and he just held on.

I had to pull away
from it.

And so you haven't
gone in here since?

BERRY: And where was it
that you got attacked?

- Right over here.

JEFF: I was actually come I was
actually coming down the stairs,

and I felt, like, somebody
kicked me in the back.

Like an actual kick?

Yeah, a kick.

You could have died.

- If I had fell.
- Absolutely.

If it's kicking you in the back
down a set of stairs now,

it'll just get worse.

Is there anywhere else

the second building.

It's different.
It's got a different feel.

BRUNI: The massive first
building is the only piece

of the original structure
still standing.

The second building
was built later in the '50s

when the dam
was still operational,

and it was used
to hold heavy machinery.

The only way to get in there is
through an underground entrance.

JEFF: Okay,
this was a service tunnel.

It connects the main building
to the second building.

And so what
happens in here.

A lot of figures in here --
full-body apparitions.

Huh.

They were workers.

Oh, workers, so...

Is there a certain type
of uniform

or anything they were wearing?
- Overalls, a lot of times.

Oh.
Interesting.

Now, one other thing --

This is weird,
but for us...

If somebody done something
they shouldn't have,

to see if we can recreate it?

We're meeting with Jeff's head
historian and tour guide Joe

since he's here almost
as much as Jeff,

and, like Jeff, Joe's never been
scared of the activity here

until recent attacks.

Joe, thank you so much for
taking the time to meet with us

and telling us a little bit
more about this place.

Can you just give us a brief
synopsis of the history here?

- It was built in 1905.
- Yeah.

From the very beginning,
it was a disaster.

What it's built on is shale,
limestone.

Geology was not taken
into consideration.

- Wow.
- Oh, really?

So, over time,
it kept leaking,

they kept building,
it kept leaking,

and there's all kinds
of people who have died here.

There have been men
who were killed --

boiler accidents, falls,
even falling debris.

- Oh, really?
- Yeah.

There are stories of the curse
put on the land.

An Indian war chief.

Oh, really?

Well, that's the legend,
anyways.

Have you had experiences

- I have, yes.
- Like what?

Shadow people.

It's mimicking a whistle
that I do.

it'll whistle back

There are times where
there's this feeling

where I want to leave,
I want to get out of there.

Kind of an intimidating
feeling.

BRUNI: The look of fear
on Joe's face

is definitely going
to stay with me.

These buildings
might not be a home,

but to Jeff and Joe,
this business means a lot.

For the safety of them
and their visitors,

Adam and I have to get
to the bottom of this.

We're about to go into the main
building of Hales Bar.

- I'm a little anxious.
- BERRY: Why?

I don't know, I just have
a little anxiety right now.

I mean...

I think it's because
it's a lot to take in.

This place is so big.

It's a lot to cover,
and the activity

that Jeff is describing
sounds dangerous.

So we need to get to the bottom
of it quickly.

Instantly walking in here,
it feels so crazy.

It's scary.
It's a scary building.

Like, it doesn't matter
how often we do this.

You can't walk in here at night
and not be freaked out.

It feels crazy.

I think we should have
a camera up here.

Oh, for sure.

BERRY: While we don't know
what's here yet,

it seems like we're dealing
with something intelligent.

Since it's mimicking Joe's
whistle and calling his name,

it should be able
to communicate with us.

So we're gonna use
our EVP record a lot.

We're setting up cameras
in the new building

where Jeff sees figures
and says something alerts him

if tour groups
leave the place a mess.

Our base of operations
is in the old building

on the walkway near the stairs
where Jeff got pushed down.

It's also next to the bathroom

where he had his first
violent experience.

That seems to be what kicked off
all the physical attacks.

I'm putting in

what I'm hearing.

So, this is the bathroom
where he got grabbed.

I think I'm gonna stand

infrared light

to detect entities
and outline them for us.

Since Jeff and Joe report

seeing shadow figures
in both buildings,

this device should be able
to give us a clear picture

of whatever's here.

the location became a hot spot
for paranormal activity.

We have to cover major ground
in two buildings

and figure out why the activity
recently became violent

before it attacks again.

when saw full-body apparitions

dressed in worker's clothing.

That's great information
we can use

while investigating in order
to directly connect

with possible workers.

Maybe we can get them
to speak with us.

We should put the laser grid
towards this direction.

BRUNI: The laser grid is a cool
piece of equipment

that creates
a light pattern.

Shadow figures
can be hard to spot,

especially in a dark tunnel
like this one.

This helps them stand out
to our cameras,

as well as our naked eye.

We use a laser grid, really,
to detect shadows.

So sometimes entire sections
of light will disappear,

as if somebody
is blocking it out.

So we're able to detect movement
in big spaces and long hallways.

we heard last night

was also where Jeff sees people
dressed like workers.

We're at the Historical Society
to learn more about the deaths

at the dam that Joe,
the tour guide, told us about.

There were so many deaths.

It's rumored there were
several hundred lives lost

throughout the building
of the dam

and its first years
of operation.

We're looking to see
if there's any information

connecting workers with
suspicious or malicious deaths.

I found something that I think
makes a lot of sense.

There was an entire riot

where three African-American men
were killed.

What?

Yeah.

All because there was a rumor
that a black man

was going
to have a position

where he was going
to manage white men.

The article is saying
the white men beat up...

...the African-American worker,
Charles Lee,

and then the black workers
decided...

...they were gonna
seek revenge...

...and started fighting
with the whites. - Right.

And then, eventually,
it escalated into this

full-on race riot
at the dam in Gunter Camp

which is where the black
workers actually lived.

Oh, my God.

This map shows where
Gunter Work Camp was located.

It's where the black workers
lived and, unfortunately,

where some were
tragically killed.

Building 2 was built directly
on top of the camp.

And so this is
what I think here.

I'm looking at this,
and I'm like,

"Okay, we have an entity
that wants people to leave,

that is angry."

Right, who wants the place
kept the way it should be --

no garbage, no trash.

Who, like, alerts Jeff, who is
in there all the time of things

that are inappropriate
and gone wrong, right?

So you have a person who
probably really liked his job

and they prided themselves
for so long to keep it alive.

want to stay around

and still be a part
of that whole thing?

is known for its tragic history
and its hauntings.

In the past,
the paranormal activity

attracted curious visitors,
but the once-benign spirits

recently started
attacking people.

We are in the second build,

and we just connected
with something.

which makes sense since
they lived and worked here,

but they're not the source
of the violence.

There wasn't any grabbing
or pushing like

Jeff experienced
in Building 1,

even when we made
a mess in their space.

This is serious.

Joe told us about a rumor

that a Cherokee war chief
cursed the land.

There was a curse

Chickamauga Cherokees.

Which were the group that were
around here and still are.

This is their leader
Dragging Canoe,

and he was the war chief
around the time

of the American Revolution.

And he was against giving away
any more land.

And there was a Treaty
of Sycamore Shoals.

He gave a speech,
which was sort of prophetic.

He said that they would give
no more land,

and the land that was left
would be dark and bloody.

The historian Cindy
just confirmed

that Chief Dragging Canoe
put a curse on the land.

CINDY: Dragging Canoe
was the war chief

around the time
of the American Revolution.

He said that they would
give no more land,

and the land that was left
would be dark and bloody.

So, basically,
he and his group,

they stopped movement on the
Tennessee River for 30 years.

- Wow.
- Wow.

So the problems with navigating
on the Tennessee Rive were,

number one,
they had whirlpools.

What's this, uh,
whirlpool situation here?

JEFF: We've heard chanting
come from the water.

So they could just sit
on the mountains,

wait for the flat boats
to come down,

pick off the ones
they wanted to,

and then disappear.

So, the curse wasn't a rumor.

The Cherokee violently fought
against the white settlers

who were moving in
on their territory,

and Dragging Canoe
put a curse on the land.

This could be connected
to the attacks on Jeff

and his visitors.

Since the violent experiences
seem to happen in Building 1,

that's where we'll start
tonight's investigation.

BERRY:
We should do the spirit box
because we haven't got a lot

of EVPs,
and we don't know why.

So maybe this will be an easier
way for them to communicate.

and so it's gonna be
picking up radio waves,

and sometimes we can hear

The spirit box
is useful for us

when it's clear spirits
are present

but can't seem to contact us
through an EVP session.

by wearing a blindfold
and noise-canceling headphones.

activity.

with these Native American
entities.

on what caused the activity

they've experienced
over the years

and also what exactly instigated
the more recent violent attacks.

So, we've been here
for a few days.

And we've found out a lot
of new information

about what has gone
on on this site.

Did you know that there
was a riot right on the site

where the second building
was built?

- There were three men killed.

That being said, I did want
to show you some evidence.

We read off the name
Charles Lee,

and that was the man
who was beaten

that started
the whole race riot.

We don't know if it
is Charles Lee,

but they knew of him,
so they knew of that

incident that happened.

Also in Building 2,
we had set up some REM Pods,

and so we purposely left
some trash up there,

and the REM Pod
started going off.

I have the footage
of that happening

just so you can see it.

[ REM Pod beeping rapidly ]

And so I walked up
and I picked up the trash.

And as I said,
"I'm taking this out,"

the REM Pod just --
Ploof!

- What?
- Right?

Yeah.

It verifies the activity
that's happening in the space.

- Building 2 feels like it has

a lot of activity
from those workers

who basically never left.

So can I ask you a question

For them to watch you

and trying to make it

But Jeff didn't call us in here
to find friendly spirits.

His visitors are being scratched
and choked,

and he was pushed down
the stairs,

which could have killed him.

It's two separate things.

The activity that was happening
to us was aggressive.

In this area, Adam and I
had had experiences that led us

to believe there was something
kind of Native American here.

We started playing
Cherokee-based music.

As soon as we started playing
this music,

Adam had a rock
thrown at him.

You can see he's got
a red mark on this face.

Right.

That's one of those moments

that will probably be
with me forever.

We were the space that
some people think is sacred

to Native American culture
because it has a whirlpool.

The activity
that was happening to us

in that section,
it was aggressive.

Because we're poking
the beast here,

and we think you accidentally
did a similar thing

when you were in that bathroom
and pushed back.

You kind of reopened a wound.
- It's not a game.

Right, exactly.
It's not a game.

We have someone here
who's actually

a Cherokee ceremonial chief,

and he's going to come in here
and just kind of appease them.

We just want to make sure
that whatever is here

isn't going to escalate
into something more dangerous.

Chief Ronnie is a direct
descendant from the Cherokee

that have been occupying
this land for hundreds of years.

He's our best bet
for protection Jeff,

his employees, and visitors.

I think our idea here is we just
want to pay respect

to whoever is here.

We don't want to banish
anything, or anything like that.

So what is it that you're
gonna do, exactly?

RONNIE: We're gonna give
a prayer of thanks,

and then we're gonna leave
an offering for the ancestors

and the protectors here.
Okay.

It's like a medicine wheel
with the circle

because everything is
in a circle for Native people.

And it's sage, cedar,
and sweet grass.

- Okay.

Grandfather, creator,
the two-legged, four-legged,

the winged ones,
the plant people,

the rock people,
and the water people.

We only come to you
and ask for your protection

as we leave here.

We came in a good way,
taking only answers and memories

and leaving only footsteps.

For our ancestors
and the protectors here,

oh, great one,
we leave these offerings.

So this is just like a gift
that we're leaving.

The spirit of the workers who
never left Hales Bar appreciate

Jeff respecting the buildings
they worked so hard to build.

Even though he's still
experiencing activity,

he won't have to worry about
anything negative from them.

The ceremonial offering
appeased the Cherokee,

and Jeff should feel safe
bringing people back in here

and running his tour business.

But Jeff has to continue to show
respect for the Cherokee

and make sure visitors
don't violate this land

and invoke their wrath,

or the violent attacks
could return.
