redefined my life.

BRUNI: Adam and I have been
called to Louisville, Kentucky,
home to the infamous
Waverly Hills Sanatorium,
one of the most paranormally
active locations
in the entire world.
Looking at that building,
it is one of the most
ominous structures.
and then when you think
of everything that happened
in those walls, it's just...
it's overwhelming.
Before the invention
of antibiotics,
a respiratory illness called
tuberculosis wiped out millions.
Doctors called it
"the white plague,"
patients called it
a death sentence.
In Jefferson County, Kentucky,
the epidemic was so bad
that officials planned
to contain the disease
by quarantining the sick.
The rapid construction of
Waverly Hills began in 1912.
BERRY: I mean,
going up this driveway,
seeing where you were
going to be,
possibly where you're going
to die is, like, intense.
BRUNI: Desperate
to discover a cure,
doctors conducted experimental
and oftentimes
barbaric surgeries.
The death count at Waverly Hills
ranges wildly.
Some say as many as
8,000 patients died here.
Others suggest more than 50,000.
The hospital closed in 1961,
after scientists
finally discovered a cure.
You don't walk into Waverly
and not have some sort
of paranormal experience.
Big haunts like this,
they become notorious for
the activity and for the scares.
I think there are
a ton of things
that will reach out to us,
because everyone wants to speak.
I feel like there are people
here who are just...
that may have died here
who are just here
and they don't know
why they're here.
It needs people like us to
come in and tell their stories,
find out who is here,
and why they're here.
BRUNI: Tina Mattingly
bought the property in 2001,
with plans to convert
the sanatorium into a hotel.
Over time, Tina became
what you might call
a paranormal caretaker,
but last year,
something turned aggressive.
Over the years, I've dealt
with Tina Mattingly
on a number of occasions.
You and I have this style
of investigating
that I think Tina needs
right now.
She needs to find out who these
aggressive entities are,
what they're doing.
Yeah, like why
are they acting out?
She's all about
protecting this place
and protecting
its occupants.
And, you know,
she and her husband
had family treated here
back in the day,
so she truly cares
about the spirits
living here
in the afterlife.
So she feels like there's
something here
that needs our help.

we can do.

uh, what's happening here.

I do think there are spirits
here that are unsettled.
- BRUNI: Right.

They're nasty.
Yeah, and there's
usually a reason.
I like to think they're trying
to tell us something or they...
maybe they don't realize
they're even gone
or maybe they had, you know,
they didn't get to finish
their life and they're angry.
Well, I think those are
the ones that we kind of
are attracted to, in a way,
because we kind of had
this shift in
our investigative style,
where we wanted
to start helping more,
not just people like you,
but them. - Mm-hmm.
And looking at them less
like a novelty
and putting a human side to it.
- Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
- Yeah.
- I live here.
We're just learning that
the more we reach out
to these entities
and learn their stories
and their reasons
for being here,
it helps them kind of overcome
whatever's holding them here.
There is a place
on the fourth floor
I would like for y'all
to go to.

It's one of the ones
I'm the most uncomfortable in.
Something happened to me
up there.
- BRUNI: How long ago was that?
- This year.
There's something that,
I just think it might be
something unsettled
that needs help.

BERRY:
I am still so overwhelmed
by the size of it
and the amount of people that
would be in here at one point.
Oh, gosh, yeah.
It's a 180,000 square foot
building.
- Yeah.
- Oh.
How many people were here,
at one point?
- Well, you know, it's got five floors.
- Mm-hmm.
- Over 500 rooms.
- BERRY: Yeah.
And they took a lot
of these big atrium rooms
and they would make 'em
into wards.
- Mm-hmm.
- Right.
And, you know,
so there's no telling
how many people were in here,
at one point in time.
What --
what was the death total?
It's in the thousands.
BRUNI: What kind of surgery
would you do for tuberculosis?
TINA:
Remove lungs, remove ribs.
The survival rate was,
back in that day, was about 5%.
BERRY: Oh, my God.
So show us where you had
your experience
and kind of explain to us
what it was.
Well, I've had
a lot of experiences,
but this unsettled me,
and I actually wanted
to leave the area.
And I don't usually do that.
- Right.
- Okay.
It was just unnerving.
Well, that's a lot
coming from you,
because I feel like
you've probably
had hundreds of experiences
here, at this point.
I've had a lot of things,
but not too many of 'em
make me feel uncomfortable.
This room right here.
- BERRY: Room 424.
I had about five guys
with me.
They were doing
an overnight investigation
with, you know, a form
of a Spirit Box.
And as soon as we hit
the hallway,
it was
a really bad smell.
It engulfed the whole area,
the whole floor.
And I just kind of
stood over here
while they set everything up,
and it just started going nuts.
- Mm-hmm.
And, I mean, it was
screaming and yelling.
- And cackling, laughing,
everything. - Really?
I can't even explain
what it sounded like.
It sounded like you were
just in a -- in a nuthouse.
- Really? Okay.
- Yeah.
And as I stood here,
I looked down this way,
I saw a little blue light
and I watched it move,
and it started coming this way.
It was only...probably no bigger
around than, like,
a ping-pong ball.
And when it disappeared,
that box shut up.
What did it -- what,
did it sound male, female?
- Everything? It was just
a bunch of voices? - Okay.
All right, so it was a number
of people screaming,
it sounded like?
- Yes.
And it was freaking
them out, too.
Mm-hmm.
So I took them down to the other
floor and I looked at 'em.
I said, "I'm going to go back
up on the fourth floor
and I'm going to see if
there's anybody else up there."
And I came up the stairwell
on the other end,
I'm saying,
"Is anybody up here?"
and then all of a sudden,
from the right side of me,
I mean, it was just
a shriek so loud,
it was almost deafening.
It scared me. I jumped
and I just swung around.
If I can say I've actually
smacked something...
- Mm-hmm.
- ...I did.
- That was it.
- That was it.
And I just yelled,
"You stop that!"
And as soon as I said that,
the smell was gone,
the noise was gone,
everything was gone.
Yeah, it wasn't nice.
BRUNI: What did this floor
used to be?
It was, uh, a mental floor,
for mental patients.
- BRUNI: Ohh. Okay.
- BERRY: We have a lot to do.
BRUNI: To be here for
multiple nights
and really get to delve into
this place is exciting for us.
TINA: There's something
there that needs help.
I'm sure you'll get
some answers.
BRUNI: Waverly Hills is almost
200,000 square feet.
Thousands of patients died here,
and any number of them
can be responsible
for the haunt.
So the fact that Tina
pinpointed an aggressive entity
on the fourth floor at least
gives us a starting point.
Ooh.
I'm a little nervous.
- I mean...Yeah.
BRUNI: We're setting up cameras
in the exact area
she had her encounter
[ Filtered voice ]
Camera one is up.
Hey, come look at this.
Watch this.
Yeah. That's
like something -- Oh!

BRUNI: We're headed upstairs,
where we will attempt
to make contact
with the spirit
using our recorder.

This floor gives me
the creeps.

Well, especially after
what she told us today.

our friend Tina said
she heard some screaming.

kicked off our investigation
of the fourth floor
at Waverly Hills,
a tuberculosis sanatorium
where thousands of people died.
And we've just made contact with
a threatening entity.
BERRY: Do you need any help?
BRUNI: Sometimes,
we can find your family.

That is angry.

That's surprised the hell

That's not a happy voice.

So we're in the exact spot
where she heard something
scream in her ear.
And something just screamed,
"No!" at us.
It does not want us here.
It does not like us.
- Sounds like a male.
- Mm-hmm.
Why is he so mad?
As soon as I heard that voice,
I got chills from head to toe.
- Yep. Yep.
- He is not happy,
especially when I brought up
family and friends,
which makes me wonder
if he was, like,
abandoned here or something.
- [ Sniffles ]
You also brought up
family and friends,
but you -- your words were,
"You can talk to us."
- Yeah, and he did not --
- And it's like, "No!"
That's the worst thing that we
could've heard tonight, I mean.
That voice was not happy
with us.
Something is striking a nerve.
- Yeah.
I mean, that is not something
you want to hear in Waverly.
BRUNI: Waverly Hills is not
the place to mess around.
Many of the spirits
haunting this building
feel trapped and desperate
and could be dangerous.
I'm wondering if we should
call in Chip.
Mm-hmm.
He might be able to guide us
a little more.
Find out who they are, if they
have messages to give out,
if they, what they need.
So maybe we could take him
to the fourth floor
without telling him what
experiences we've had up there
and gets his impression.

BRUNI:
Before we bring in Chip,
Adam and I need to know
who we are dealing with.
We know the sheer numbers
of deaths
and things
that happened there,
but there has to be
some standout occurrences,
some, something, you know,
emotional or tragic
that would result
in what we're seeing there.
You know, so I'm going to
start digging in here.
When we do huge cases like this,
associated with
thousands of deaths,
we look for big,
violent acts,
any event that would
harbor extreme resentment.
So check this out.
There was a murder
at Waverly. Like, there --
like an orderly killed
one of his coworkers
on -- at Waverly.
What if that was
on the fourth floor?
I mean, I --
it would make sense.
This dude, look, this guy --
this guy ran over a nurse
on the highway out front.
2:00 in the morning.
Why is she wandering around
in front of the hospital
at 2:00 in the morning?
Maybe she was walking home.
Okay, so get this.
This woman's husband
was a patient
at Waverly Hills
for like, three months.
She meets this other dude,
Charles Chester Cureton,
at a cafe at 3:00 a.m., right?
So they clearly have a little
somethin'- somethin' going on.
Something happens,
he slaps her,
she falls on the ground,
hits her head, and dies.
She was found in an alley.
The woman's death was due to
a cerebral hemorrhage
caused by a blow
to the head.
She was the mother
of seven children.
My God.
Her husband told police
that he had been a patient
at Waverly Hills
Tuberculosis Sanatorium
for the past three years.
He said he would ask the state
to care for their children,
since he now must return
to the sanatorium
for further treatment.
And so, then their kids get
sent to state care?
- What?
- Yeah.
I mean, can you imagine?
So you go into the hospital
with tuberculosis,
three months later, you find out
your wife is cheating on you,
because she gets murdered
by her lover.
Mm-hmm.
And then you have to give
all seven of your children
to the state,
because you have tuberculosis
and you're in Waverly Hills.
Yes. Yeah, yeah.
And you spend the next...
God knows how long there,
until you die.
BRUNI:
As paranormal investigators,
names are very important.
They allow us to confront
the spirit
and determine a solution
to the problem.
Armed with the identity
of several potential culprits,
we're headed back to Waverly.
We called in Chip Coffey,
a powerful psychic medium,
who is familiar with Waverly
but is not privy
to any of the information
we just uncovered.
We're hoping he keys
in on a name.
BRUNI:
So really just kind of...

The story is, Tina heard
all of these souls like,
literally screaming, laughing,
cackling, all at once,
through this one box,
you know, so...

in all the years
I have worked with you
in this capacity,
I don't know that
you have ever hit on anything

'Cause I found this story
of a man, John Mitchell.
He had seven children.
While he's here
at Waverly Hills,
his wife has basically
taken up with another man,
and this man ends up
murdering her.
Because of this murder
and because he is here and sick,
he has to give his
seven children to the state.
So he loses his children.
- Oh, my.
Now the man who murdered her
got away with all of it.
Yeah.
So you kept saying
a "C" name, right?
Yeah.
You kept saying,
"C, C, Charles."
You said the name Charles.
- Yeah.
And you said, "C, C, C."
The man's name, the murderer --
Charles Chester Cureton.
This all happened in 1946.
The thing to remember
about the gentleman John,
who was here with
tuberculosis... - Yes.
...he ended up dying
of tuberculosis in 1959.
So he was here and sick
for years and years and years.
- Years, yeah.
- The moment we went up there,
you mentioned the people
associated with
this article, right?
So you just
literally verified to us
that we were headed
in the right direction.

confronted an aggressive entity

This energy is all over
this lantern.
I mean, it's like, look how
far out it's extending.

jumping all over the place?
BERRY: Yeah. So we have --
uh, is it gone now?

Okay...that was a lot.
Honestly, that was a lot.
It was like, bombarding me,
and then towards the end,
I had to tell myself,
"It can't hurt you,

it can't hurt you,"
Because I felt like something
was right behind me.
And it was just this
really overwhelming feeling.
I'm like, I don't know what's
going on right now, like, yeah.
BERRY: Okay, so this is
what we know.
It sounded like
there were times it was
answering us directly.
- Mm-hmm.
Right? Then there were times
when it seemed like
there were 90 people
talking at once.
Yes.
And then something popped up
on the screen
and at first,
I thought it was you,
but then it started extending
its body away from you.
And then you said,
"Oh, I feel like something
is right next to me,"
which was what it was showing us
on this SLS camera.
I felt like something
was all on me
and I felt
really freaked out.
So what we got from
all of this was,
A, no wonder she was hearing
all of those voices
come out of that Spirit Box.
- Right.
Everybody has something to say,
because people aren't
being heard in this space.
And it was very hard
to control them.
It seemed unorganized,
as if they're just here,
everyone's fending
for themselves.
That's what it sounded like.
I just got really light-headed.
Huh.
That's really weird.
This guy can give you

I mean, my head just started
to go, "Boom!"

I mean, it was quick, though.

the man who lost

when we address
spirits directly.

not okay about this spot.

it feels like...
it just doesn't feel right.
And this just shut off.
- It did?

If there's somebody up here,

onto the fourth floor,
we immediately encountered
whoever it is up
there that you've had
experiences with.

This was our first night.
He made his unhappiness
known very quickly to us.
That's what I told you about,
it was like right in my ear.
Whoever that was, was very
clear, screaming like, "No!"
They had no interest
in talking to us.
And we were like, "Okay,
now we know where we stand."
We got evidence, but it was
nothing that was bringing us
closer to an answer.
And so, that's why we asked
Chip to come out.
He immediately went to your spot
on the fourth floor.

And he was very clear,
there was something there
very angry and upset.
And then he started
naming names.
He kept saying "Charles,
I keep getting C, C, C,"
over and over again.
So I found a story.
This woman, her husband was
here at Waverly
being treated
for tuberculosis.
She met another man.
That man
ended up killing her.
His name was
Charles Chester.
And his last name
started with a "C.

of a coincidence for us
to ignore, you know.

who would know about this,

active locations

Looking at that building,
it is one of the most
ominous structures.
and then when you think
of everything that happened
in those walls, it's just...
it's overwhelming.
Before the invention
of antibiotics,
a respiratory illness called
tuberculosis wiped out millions.
Doctors called it
"the white plague,"
patients called it
a death sentence.
In Jefferson County, Kentucky,
the epidemic was so bad
that officials planned
to contain the disease
by quarantining the sick.
The rapid construction of
Waverly Hills began in 1912.
BERRY: I mean,
going up this driveway,
seeing where you were
going to be,
possibly where you're going
to die is, like, intense.
BRUNI: Desperate
to discover a cure,
doctors conducted experimental
and oftentimes
barbaric surgeries.
The death count at Waverly Hills
ranges wildly.
Some say as many as
8,000 patients died here.
Others suggest more than 50,000.
The hospital closed in 1961,
after scientists
finally discovered a cure.
You don't walk into Waverly
and not have some sort
of paranormal experience.
Big haunts like this,
they become notorious for
the activity and for the scares.
I think there are
a ton of things
that will reach out to us,
because everyone wants to speak.
I feel like there are people
here who are just...
that may have died here
who are just here
and they don't know
why they're here.
It needs people like us to
come in and tell their stories,
find out who is here,
and why they're here.
BRUNI: Tina Mattingly
bought the property in 2001,
with plans to convert
the sanatorium into a hotel.
Over time, Tina became
what you might call
a paranormal caretaker,
but last year,
something turned aggressive.
Over the years, I've dealt
with Tina Mattingly
on a number of occasions.

of investigating
that I think Tina needs

She needs to find out who these
aggressive entities are,
what they're doing.

would be in here at one point.

It's a 180,000 square foot
building.

How many people were here,

- Well, you know, it's got five floors.

- Over 500 rooms.

And they took a lot
of these big atrium rooms
and they would make 'em
into wards.

And, you know,
so there's no telling
how many people were in here,
at one point in time.

what was the death total?
It's in the thousands.
BRUNI: What kind of surgery
would you do for tuberculosis?
TINA:
Remove lungs, remove ribs.
The survival rate was,
back in that day, was about 5%.
BERRY: Oh, my God.
So show us where you had
your experience
and kind of explain to us
what it was.
Well, I've had
a lot of experiences,
but this unsettled me,
and I actually wanted
to leave the area.
And I don't usually do that.

It was just unnerving.
Well, that's a lot
coming from you,
because I feel like
you've probably
had hundreds of experiences
here, at this point.
I've had a lot of things,
but not too many of 'em
make me feel uncomfortable.

I had about five guys
with me.
They were doing
an overnight investigation
with, you know, a form
of a Spirit Box.
And as soon as we hit
the hallway,
it was
a really bad smell.
It engulfed the whole area,
the whole floor.
And I just kind of
stood over here
while they set everything up,
and it just started going nuts.
- Mm-hmm.
And, I mean, it was
screaming and yelling.
- And cackling, laughing,
everything. - Really?
I can't even explain
what it sounded like.
It sounded like you were
just in a -- in a nuthouse.
- Really? Okay.
- Yeah.
And as I stood here,
I looked down this way,
I saw a little blue light
and I watched it move,
and it started coming this way.
It was only...probably no bigger
around than, like,
a ping-pong ball.
And when it disappeared,
that box shut up.
What did it -- what,
did it sound male, female?
- Everything? It was just
a bunch of voices? - Okay.
All right, so it was a number
of people screaming,
it sounded like?
- Yes.
And it was freaking
them out, too.
Mm-hmm.
So I took them down to the other
floor and I looked at 'em.
I said, "I'm going to go back
up on the fourth floor
and I'm going to see if
there's anybody else up there."
And I came up the stairwell
on the other end,
I'm saying,
"Is anybody up here?"
and then all of a sudden,
from the right side of me,
I mean, it was just
a shriek so loud,
it was almost deafening.
It scared me. I jumped
and I just swung around.
If I can say I've actually
smacked something...

- ...I did.
- That was it.
- That was it.
And I just yelled,
"You stop that!"
And as soon as I said that,
the smell was gone,
the noise was gone,
everything was gone.
Yeah, it wasn't nice.

used to be?
It was, uh, a mental floor,
for mental patients.

- BERRY: We have a lot to do.
BRUNI: To be here for
multiple nights
and really get to delve into
this place is exciting for us.
TINA: There's something
there that needs help.

200,000 square feet.
Thousands of patients died here,
and any number of them
can be responsible
for the haunt.
So the fact that Tina
pinpointed an aggressive entity
on the fourth floor at least
gives us a starting point.

Many of the spirits
haunting this building
feel trapped and desperate
and could be dangerous.

one of his coworkers

this guy ran over a nurse

This woman's husband

She meets this other dude,

So they clearly have a little

he slaps her,
she falls on the ground,
hits her head, and dies.
She was found in an alley.
The woman's death was due to
a cerebral hemorrhage
caused by a blow
to the head.
She was the mother
of seven children.
My God.
Her husband told police
that he had been a patient
at Waverly Hills
Tuberculosis Sanatorium
for the past three years.
He said he would ask the state
to care for their children,
since he now must return
to the sanatorium
for further treatment.
And so, then their kids get
sent to state care?
- What?
- Yeah.
I mean, can you imagine?
So you go into the hospital
with tuberculosis,
three months later, you find out
your wife is cheating on you,
because she gets murdered
by her lover.
Mm-hmm.
And then you have to give
all seven of your children
to the state,
because you have tuberculosis
and you're in Waverly Hills.
Yes. Yeah, yeah.
And you spend the next...
God knows how long there,
until you die.

As paranormal investigators,
names are very important.
They allow us to confront
the spirit
and determine a solution
to the problem.

of several potential culprits,

Well, this has been
a very eventful few days.
When we got here and we
started talking to you,
it was very clear
that you wanted to find out
what was on that fourth floor.
Going up
onto the fourth floor,
we immediately encountered
whoever it is up
there that you've had
experiences with.

the first EVP.
This was our first night.
He made his unhappiness
known very quickly to us.
That's what I told you about,
it was like right in my ear.

clear, screaming like, "No!"
They had no interest

And his last name
started with a "C.

of a coincidence for us
to ignore, you know.
