Haunting in the Heartland (2020–…): Season 1, Episode 3 - Descent Into Madness - full transcript
Steve travels to Holly Springs, Mississippi, where a family is being tormented by the ghost of a psychiatric patient. He uncovers a dark secret that has haunted the town for over a century,...
Before I moved here,
absolutely did not believe
in the paranormal...
I never believed in ghosts.
I did not think
that they were real.
...That is, until I got here.
There were families
that bought that house
and moved out
the next morning.
It was a true living hell.
She attempted
to kill her parents.
- Here in this house?
- In this house.
They had a ouija board
and a crystal.
- S?ance.
- Yes.
- It's a dangerous game.
- Very dangerous.
Among the idyllic streets
and rolling fields
of america's heartland,
something evil lurks
in the shadows
of these close-knit
communities.
I know because I grew up here
and witnessed the fear
these hauntings caused
firsthand.
now, as a paranormal
investigator
and documentary filmmaker,
I've made it my mission
to travel the heartland
and bring resolution
to the living and the dead.
Holly springs is like
a small southern town.
Everyone knows everyone
in holly springs.
Folks come from all over
the world, really,
because we're
on the blues trail.
By the 1850s, holly
springs was the third-largest
and most populous town
in all of mississippi.
There was a confederate battle
here between van dorn and grant.
A couple of generals
stayed here,
and they built their homes here,
so the antebellum homes
are really something.
New folks are moving into town,
buying these old homes,
and strange things
are happening.
I mean, holly spring, it --
It is haunted.
You know,
there's been several stories
about just sick people,
but there's something here.
It's almost like
you're being watched,
but there's
nobody there.
We moved to mississippi
on a whim.
My wife kept on getting ads
for this specific home
on her facebook.
We were just basically
looking for a change,
and this house popped up.
It was $75,000.
It was in mississippi.
Never been to mississippi
before in my life.
Well, at the bottom of the house
ad, there was comments.
"a beautiful home."
"can't believe the price."
but there was this woman
named charlotte,
and charlotte had wrote,
"the house comes with a spirit,"
and she said that it was
a woman named bulah.
I laughed, and I said, "$75,000?
I'll live with it."
As the activity
in the house increased,
the kids really didn't want
to come over here.
I have two daughters
and two brand-new
grandbabies in my life,
and neither one of them
want to stay here.
The second I walked in the door,
I felt something was off.
We want to make sure
that our family is safe,
and it's hard
even to have my parents here.
That's tough when your kids
don't want to come here
because of the house,
and it's tough
when the grandkids are scared.
If we don't get help,
my daughter is not going to come
and visit anymore
with my granddaughter,
but I can't have that.
I want
my grandbaby to come and visit.
holly springs is definitely a
very small, little rustic town.
There's a lot of historic
homes here.
So, right now,
we're going to head over
and meet stacey and jim.
They bought a small historic
home here in holly springs,
and then right away,
started having a lot
of activity take place.
Definitely anxious to get
into that house
and hear their stories,
and they seem to be the type
that document their experiences
fairly well,
so that's going to be key
for me to understand
what's happening
in their house.
Hi. How are you? Welcome.
Steve.
Hi, steve.
I'm stacey.
How you doing?
I'm jimmy.
Jimmy.
Hi, brittany.
Brittany.
Nice to meet you.
All right, I'm going to mic you
guys up here real quick.
So, how long have you guys
lived here?
So, we've been here
about a year and a half.
We're from new york originally,
and for a year and a half,
it's been a lot
of different activity.
So, would you mind
showing me
where some of this
activity occurs?
Sure. I'll take you
right in here.
This home has three front rooms,
and the three front rooms
are from the original,
from the 1800s,
and a lot of things
happen here in this room.
Windows would open and close.
Curtains would spin around.
Chandeliers would
go on and off.
First three rooms here
are the oldest part of the home,
where a lot of activity
has happened,
and we kind of had it
in the back of our head
that it was haunted
from the conversations
that I had with the old owners,
but still didn't believe it
until we walked in
on our first night,
and I heard a woman cry...
...And I literally froze.
It scared me.
I wasn't going to get up
and find out what it was.
So, I kind of stay out
of these three rooms.
It's kind of like
I gave them three rooms.
You went
from a skeptic to,
"I give hundreds
of square footage of my home
to the spirits."
I mean, think about that
for a moment.
I mean,
that's a huge leap.
Other people
don't understand it.
They literally come,
and then they want to leave,
like my daughter
and the baby.
She doesn't like it
here, really.
I want to be able to come here
and see my family
and feel comfortable,
and I want my kid
to grow up the way I grew up.
So, you don't really get to
spend much time
with the granddaughter
as a result of...
No.
What experiences
have you had to make you
not want
to be back here?
I was actually standing in,
like, this position right here,
and I had
my daughter with me,
and I saw something
in the corner of my eye,
and I, like,
looked to see what it was,
and I saw this white, like,
it almost looked like
a little girl, run by the door.
And when she ran by it,
she knocked off a hat
that was on the wall.
I didn't know how to react
or respond.
I just wanted to go home.
How do you feel
about this home now?
It scares me.
I just want my daughter
to be safe.
Could you show me
where this took place?
Sure. Yeah.
So, it was
right in this area,
and this was actually the exact
hat that fell off the wall.
That definitely
confirmed it for me
that it wasn't
just something
that might have been
in my eye
or whatever
it might have been.
So, directly after
that incident,
my daughter had a laptop,
and I borrowed it,
and that's where I set it
on the floor
'cause it went by here,
and wanted to see
if I can catch it,
and I do have a video
for that, twice.
Can I see that?
Yes.
- Yeah, that would be great.
- Absolutely.
there you go.
Did you see that?
Yeah, absolutely.
It's fast, but I mean,
it's right there.
So, if they want you to see it,
you're going to see it.
so, it's all here
in this hallway.
What kind of things happen?
Well, lots
of different things.
I had a problem
with my dog.
So, king was my pit bull
and was acting different.
We went out one night.
We came home, and he had killed
one of the cats.
How long have you had the dog
for before it began
- to behave this way?
- Two years.
Two years,
and you never saw
any behavior
like that whatsoever?
No.
Absolutely not.
Absolutely not.
And it started off, he would
growl this very guttural,
low-toned growl.
There was
something wrong.
His eyes changed.
I can't explain it
to you.
What do you mean
his eyes changed?
Nothing in it.
Nothing in his eyes, just black.
The blackness of his eyes,
it led me to wonder
if he was possessed,
and then he bit me.
I was just standing there,
and he lunged and bit my arm.
That really unnerved me.
It wasn't him.
There was something in him.
There was definitely something
in him.
At that point,
we had to put him down.
The vet had never seen
anything like it.
And as soon as the doctor walked
over, that dog went crazy.
So, the vet didn't know
what to do,
and he called
the marshall county sheriff,
who had came out
with a dart gun.
One dart
would tranquilize him,
and then we could take him
and euthanize him.
They shot him once,
and he didn't sleep.
They shot him again.
He didn't sleep.
Four times,
and he didn't sleep.
They never saw
anything like it.
I'm in holly springs,
mississippi,
investigating stacey
and jim's house.
I'm most concerned about
whatever is affecting their dog.
If a spirit took over an animal
and caused it to turn
on its owner and attack them,
we're dealing with something
very powerful.
They shot him once,
and he didn't sleep.
They shot him again.
He didn't sleep.
Four times,
and he didn't sleep.
They never saw anything like it,
and then...They euthanized him.
I do think that was some type
of spirit, you know,
manifested in his body.
I know it was because
we had him cremated,
and we put him between us,
and the growl came back.
It was so loud,
so I don't think it was king.
I think
it was what was in him.
it was terrible.
Who do you think
is haunting this house?
I think there are a number
of spirits in this house.
Bulah cawthon is the only
one that we're aware of.
Why would you believe it
to be this woman?
This was her home
growing up
before she was
institutionalized.
Bulah was
institutionalized in 1920,
and she stayed in
the mississippi state hospital
for the insane
until she died in 1968.
50 years
in those conditions.
Yep.
And how did she
end up there, exactly?
She attempted to kill
her parents.
Here in this house?
In this house.
Her parents woke up
in the middle of the night,
and she was standing
over them with a knife.
So, it was the parents
that committed her.
She didn't go there
on her own free will?
No.
She was committed.
Committed. Okay.
So, she probably harbored
a lot of...
A lot of angst,
I would imagine.
A lot of angst.
And she's not done.
You know,
this house represented
the only bit of happiness
in her life,
so it's entirely possible
she could be attached here
and is the driving force
behind what happens here.
This is a serious thing.
Yeah.
And what happened
with the dog,
I mean, what kind of toll
is it taking on you now?
I'm not having
my grandbaby here,
and what happened to king
is tragic, absolutely tragic,
so it's taken a toll.
We got to do something.
From what stacey and jim
have told me,
it really sounds like there are
a lot of spirits in this house.
They believe one is a woman
named bulah,
but tonight, I need to find out
who is here,
how many spirits there are,
and how they got here.
tonight, we have
a lot of ground to cover.
Stacey and jim just left
for the night,
but after hearing
about their experiences,
so much activity
being described,
so many different rooms
and multiple spirits,
my plan right now is to try
to canvass this house with
as many different devices
as possible,
and I'm talking audio,
video, k-ii, emf, everything.
now this area here,
this is where stacey
was showing me that video.
it just seems to be a very
hot spot of the area,
for whatever reason,
of the home.
So, this is a music box.
There's the sensor.
Anything that crosses
the sensor,
it'll alert with the music
you just heard.
Of course, the light will flash.
My name is steve.
I was brought in by jim
and stacey.
They would like to know
who is in their home and why.
can you speak to me?
right there.
Rem pod just went off.
Whoever's here,
you can come to me.
that was a huge hit on that.
Why are you in this house?
What is your purpose?
please do not be afraid or
hesitant to communicate with me.
In fact, I'm going to check
my recorder to see if you did.
why are you in this house?
What is your purpose?
It's hard to hear what it says,
but you can clearly hear it
when I say,
"what is your purpose?"
why are you in this house?
What is your purpose?
two syllables.
So, we're going to have to dump
that and analyze that.
hold on. Hold on.
who are you?
I need you to acknowledge.
bulah, is that you?
Is it you who keeps approaching
my meter here?
Bulah, if it's you,
please approa--
wow. Right there.
Immediate response.
okay, bulah.
Do you want my help?
literally, we're --
I'm communicating
with whatever is in this room.
It was setting off the device,
little bit, little bit,
and then as I came back in
and really tried
to communicate with it,
it just went off
the charts repeatedly.
I really think bulah is here.
is something else here
in this house?
My god, guys.
This is just incredible.
At this point, I need to move on
and try to find out
what else is in this house.
I don't know if --
is that the music box going off?
look at this...Music box.
it's right in front of it.
It's got to be right
in front of that device.
Who's here?
the music box has not gone off
the entire night until just now,
and this is
the exact same spot
that the family caught
that apparition on video.
I mean, look at it.
It's still going.
Whatever it is,
it's playing with us.
Jamie, can you scan this area
with the sls?
is there anything here?
right over here?
My name is steve.
You can communicate with me.
I'm here to help you.
Can you reach out
and touch my hand?
yeah, I feel it.
I'm in holly springs,
mississippi,
investigating
stacey and jim's house.
I believe I was communicating
with a spirit named bulah
through the rem pod when
something set off the music box,
and the entity suddenly
appeared on the sls camera.
can you reach out
and touch my hand?
It touched your hand.
It touched your hand.
Yeah, I feel it.
man.
I just got a really,
really bad feeling
all of a sudden
about this.
is it gone?
Are you seeing
anything now?
What was happening
with the music box,
I don't even have
an explanation.
At this point,
I want to review the audio
from the digital recorder to see
if I can make out
what two syllables
I heard earlier.
okay, so, this is
the first vowel, right?
Yes.
Why are you
in the his house?
What is your purpose?
right there,
sound like a verbal --
why are you
in this house?
What is your purpose.
S?ance.
I literally heard
the word "s?ance."
hearing "s?ance" come out of the
digital recorder is very ominous
because when you mess
around with stuff like that,
you don't know
what you're letting in.
if there is indeed multiple
spirits in this house
that inhabit this home,
it's possible they could've
entered through a s?ance.
I need to find out exactly
what rituals were performed
in this house
and for what purpose.
I feel like my work is done here
for tonight,
but tomorrow, boots
on the grounds, very much so.
hearing the word "s?ance" last
night was really concerning.
You never know if the people
conducting the s?ance
really knew
what they were doing.
A ritual like that could've
opened up something evil
in the humphreys' house
and let evil spirits in.
We reached out to the former
residents
of the humphrey house,
charlotte and her sister angie,
and they agreed to talk to me
at a local coffee shop.
I'm hoping she can give me
more information
about this house
and its history.
Charlotte and angie?
Yes.
Hey, how you doing?
Steve.
Nice to meet you.
Hi, steve.
Nice to meet you.
So, I understand that --
which one of you are charlotte?
Right here.
You? Okay.
What can you tell me
about the house?
I lived in the house
with my grandmother.
My grandmother bought it in 1935
and was 93 when she moved out,
so they owned it
a long time,
about 65, 70 years,
something like that.
And during this
whole duration of time,
they've always felt
it was haunted?
Exactly.
Yes. Always.
So, after talking to stacey,
the current owner,
she said that when she came
across this property,
that somebody had
made a comment about,
"it comes
with a spirit."
so, that was you
that wrote that?
That was me.
Yeah.
I said,
"it's a wonderful house,
but it does come
with a live-in ghost."
do you think
stacey believed it?
I don't think she believed it
at first.
But everybody,
when we were kids,
knew the house was haunted.
Yeah, it was just
common knowledge.
There were families
that bought that house
before stacey did
and moved out,
leaving all their belongings
the next morning.
Some moved out the very night
that they moved in.
The first night?
So, during my initial
investigation,
I heard
the word "s?ance."
do you know
if anything like that
ever happened
in this house?
My uncle and myself
and couple of us others
sat on the floor with
a ouija board and a crystal,
and that stirred up
a lot of things that happened.
The wind blew,
the chandeliers blew,
and the curtain's blowing,
but no windows were open,
and no door was open.
And finally, something, like,
snatched my arm.
I couldn't scream.
I couldn't move.
I didn't know what to do.
Something had a hold
of my arm,
and I got up and ran
and screamed and ran,
and all of them
ran in there with me.
We pulled up my shirt, and there
was a red handprint on my arm.
You could see deep fingers
in my arm.
Bulah, that's who you think
did these things?
Right,
that's who I think.
That's who
we always said.
That's what we heard
as a child.
I mean, we had heard bulah since
we were kids,
so it was normal.
So, you believe it was her
that was communicating with you
through
the spirit board?
I do.
I mean, it was haunted before,
but this time, it was a rage.
The haunting changed.
Yeah.
The temperament changed because
it had always been haunted.
I mean, and we heard of it
as bulah,
but then I guess
it was more intense.
It was
a little different.
I mean, it was more --
the tone changed.
She was angry.
And why do you think
that bulah,
why do you think
she's angry?
She was in a mental institution
all her life,
all her adult life.
And I'm sure that made her
very angry
that she missed out
on her life.
Yeah.
You know?
And do you think
her goal was to --
she's just taking out this anger
on the people in the house?
Right.
Do you think that there could be
something darker in the house?
Yes.
I think there's something there
that wasn't there
when we were growing up.
Do you think
that could've been done
through the s?ance-type
activity?
It's a haunted town.
This town has got
so much history.
You've got
a whole cemetery
full of a whole generation
of children
that died...
With the yellow fever.
How many towns had
that kind of history?
Hearing about
this yellow-fever outbreak,
how many people died?
This is a small town, so I mean,
it sounds like
it really rocked this community,
and that's got to play a part.
But I appreciate you guys,
so thank you again.
Thank you again.
For sure.
Thanks.
All right.
Appreciate it.
We got to figure out
all the pieces,
and now,
after hearing this,
I want to learn more
about that outbreak.
I'm going to the museum
to meet up with
local historian
phillip knecht.
I really want to see if there
could be a connection
between the yellow-fever
epidemic of holly springs
and that activity
currently happening
at jim and stacey's home.
hey, how you doing?
Steve.
Steve, how you doing?
Phillip knecht.
Nice to meet you.
You, too, phillip.
Welcome to the marshall county
historical museum.
So, phillip, the reason I wanted
to talk to you is
I'm trying to get an idea
of the history of holly springs,
the town and
is there are connection
to a case
that I'm working on.
It's a house
with multiple spirits,
and I'm trying to figure out
who these spirits are
and why they seem
to be gravitating to this home.
I think we could help you
here at the museum.
Here in holly springs,
the town has been destroyed
and rebuilt
several times,
but by far, the most
traumatic event in holly springs
was the yellow-fever
epidemic of 1878.
When yellow fever arrived here,
we had 3,500 citizens here.
Within just 5 days, 1,500
of those had fled out of town.
The people left had
very little means.
They couldn't escape,
so for the next three months,
the 1,500 people that remained
were living
in a true living hell.
Entire families
were wiped out.
At this point,
the yellow-fever virus
is attacking
your inside organs,
including your liver
and kidneys.
You would be
hemorrhaging blood and bile
from every orifice
of your body.
Death would come very quickly,
but very horrible.
Wow.
That's disturbing
to even look at, isn't it?
It is very disturbing.
This is what every single
citizen would have encountered.
So many people were dying
that there were no more hearses
to deliver them
to the cemetery,
so the bodies were just
put on the courthouse lawn
and left to rot.
And by the end
of the epidemic,
we had lost 10%
of the entire population.
Wow.
I'm in holly springs,
mississippi,
speaking with a local historian
about the yellow-fever
outbreak of 1878,
which wiped out nearly 10%
of the town's population.
Such a devastating event
would certainly leave
a long-lasting scar.
And now you said there
was around 300-plus people?
At least we know
304 names,
and it could be as high as 350,
maybe even 400.
With that many deaths and people
dying in such an awful,
agonizing way,
this has got to play a part
in what is happening over
at this house.
I do know that this house
is actually
almost directly behind
the yellow-fever museum.
Even though it's hard
to get to it now
due to
modern constructions,
back then, that family
living in that house
would've been affected very
strongly by the yellow fever.
A lot of individuals
live in what we call
yellow-fever houses.
These are
houses in town
where we know
yellow-fever victims died.
Almost every single one
that now lives
in a yellow-fever house
has experienced
some sort of
paranormal activity.
We're talking dozens and dozens
of houses in this town.
Jim and stacey's home
is located right
where many of the yellow-fever
victims were treated,
so most certainly whomever
lived there at the time
would have
certainly been affected.
With that many deaths,
it would be impossible
that it wouldn't have had
a major effect
on the town
of holly springs,
and that's probably
why most people think
this community
is haunted.
I think you may have really shed
some light
on what's happening
with the case I'm dealing with,
and that's my
number-one priority.
Yes, sir.
Well, thank you so much.
Thank you.
All right.
Due to its location and age,
I think it's very likely
that jim and stacey's home
housed the spirits
of the yellow-fever victims.
And if they are there,
they are not alone
because I am positive
that bulah is in the home.
I really need to get
more information about bulah
and what her mental state
would've been like
when she was forced
to go to the asylum.
so, right now, I'm on the way
to meet with dr. Pannel,
who is actually
a psychiatrist.
I really need to know what
bulah was suffering from,
and if we can figure out
what afflicted her in life,
it'll help us figure out what's
happening in the house now.
I need to speak with
a professional
to find out
what is afflicting her
because if the house truly
is haunted
by spirits of
the yellow-fever epidemic,
how would somebody
with bulah's mind state
handle something like that?
hi. Dr. Pannel?
Yes.
How you doing?
Hi. Good.
Nice to meet you.
Good to meet you.
So, dr. Pannel,
as we discussed on the phone,
this case that I'm working on
in holly springs,
the family that I'm trying to
help, jim and stacey,
they believe that the ghost
in their house
is a woman named bulah,
and that it's rumored to believe
that she had
bipolar disorder
or some type of issue
with mental health
that led to her
being institutionalized.
So, I've researched bulah
and learned a lot about her.
It seems like the symptoms
that she was displaying
were very characteristic
of bipolar disorder.
There's two different forms,
a milder form,
which is bipolar ii,
and a more severe form
that is not very easily
treated called bipolar I.
It appears that
she had bipolar I.
Patients typically can present
very agitated, restless.
They don't sleep.
Hyperverbal,
they talk a lot.
They engage
in risky behaviors,
and oftentimes
they become psychotic.
You know,
and on that note,
bulah actually brandished
a knife on her sleeping parents.
Does that surprise you?
No, and I imagine,
because she was untreated,
that she probably
developed paranoia,
probably was delusional
and thought maybe
her parents
were out to harm her
and felt like she was
in legit danger,
so she was prepared
to protect herself.
I think that's probably
where institutionalization
back then came in.
That was the only way
to protect others,
was to basically
lock them up.
What would it be like
for bulah in the era
in which she was committed
into this mental institution?
What would the conditions
be like?
What would a patient
be going through at that time?
The conditions
weren't good.
I can't imagine there was
any quality of life,
and unfortunately, she wasn't
able to get effective treatment
because it wasn't available
during that time,
so symptoms
just continued to worsen
until psychosis
appears.
Based on the research
I've done,
I believe the house
was already haunted
by victims
of the yellow-fever epidemic,
even before bulah
was born.
Now if, in fact,
that were the case,
somebody who was suffering
from bipolar I
and living in a haunted house,
what could that do to them?
I could only imagine it
would escalate symptoms --
the paranoia
and the delusions,
and maybe she was even
having hallucinations.
If she was seeing spirits
or hearing things,
it would only reinforce
the symptoms
and worsen the symptoms
she already had.
My investigation
in holly springs, mississippi,
has led me to the office
of a local psychiatrist
who just informed me
that bulah,
the spirit we believe
is in the home,
suffered from the most severe
form of bipolar disorder.
The paranoia and the delusions,
and maybe she was even
having hallucinations.
If she was seeing spirits
or hearing things,
it would only reinforce
the symptoms
and worsen the symptoms
she already had.
And being untreated,
all of that together
just kind of
culminating.
Absolutely.
You have a setup for disaster.
Imagine spending 50 years
living under those conditions.
I mean, it's no wonder
that bulah
would be super angry and upset
and taking it out
on anyone around her.
I just feel
truly awful for her,
and I really wish we could
help her find some peace.
Well, dr. Pannel,
you've been a huge help.
Thank you
for involving me.
Definitely.
After speaking
with dr. Pannel,
I truly believe that the spirits
of the yellow-fever epidemic
were tormenting bulah
in her life and now in death.
When you have somebody
who is paranoid and delusional
in a house that's haunted,
that's a ticking time bomb,
and we need to get
back there right now
before something
even worse happens.
so, I wanted to talk to you guys
about what I've discovered.
During my investigation,
I believe I was able
to directly communicate
with the spirit of bulah.
There was a lot of concurrent
activity taking place,
which has really led me
to believe
that there are
multiple spirits in your home.
After speaking
with charlotte and angie,
it's really led me to believe
that this house was haunted
even before
bulah's death.
They told me
they conducted a s?ance
here in this house
right after bulah's death,
and honestly,
I believe that's what brought
her spirit
back to this home,
and I believe the other spirits
in your home
are the restless souls,
the angry souls
from the yellow-fever
epidemic.
With your home being
right here
in the middle
of that outbreak,
there's no way
that it wasn't affected.
I also spoke
to a psychiatrist
to find out more
about bulah's condition.
She told me that bulah
likely suffered
from a severe form
of bipolar disorder,
which would explain her erratic
behavior and anger outbursts.
She told me that
it was likely that bulah
could have suffered
from paranoid delusions.
I believe that she thought that
jim may have been her father
and actually caused
your dog to attack him.
I know you guys have
a strong attachment to bulah,
but with her behavior and
what's going on in this home,
I think it's best to cross
over all the spirits
here in this house,
including bulah
and the yellow-fever-
epidemic victims.
And if it's possible
to send them to the light,
that would be great.
So, you guys are okay
with staying with me
for a little while
and starting this?
Sure. Absolutely.
Absolutely.
Okay, I'm going to
head out to my vehicle,
bring in some gear.
If you guys want to just,
you know,
collect yourselves for a minute,
we'll get started.
Sure.
I've invited
jim and stacey to help cross
over the spirits
in their home,
but, first,
we need to call them out.
Now, this device here
is basically an emf meter,
and this is exactly where bulah
was communicating with me,
so if it's okay with you guys,
I'd like to start here
and see
if we can replicate.
Now I did all the talking
the other night, obviously,
but with you guys being here,
I'd like to see if you guys
could communicate with bulah
and see what would happen.
Bulah,
can you step forward?
is there anyone else here
with bulah?
is there anything else here
bothering you, any others?
yes.
This is exactly what I was
experiencing the other night.
Are there any
yellow-fever victims here?
my god.
are you afraid,
bulah?
yes.
I'm preparing to cleanse
jim and stacey's home
here in holly springs,
mississippi.
Normally, I'd have the family
leave for the evening,
but since they have
such a unique connection
to the spirit of bulah,
I believe their presence will be
key in cleansing the home.
Would you like us to help you
get them to leave,
leave this home,
cross over?
That's what we're here for.
okay.
this house has been active,
it seems to me,
since the yellow-fever
epidemic,
and then when bulah
passed away, she came here
because this is
the only home she ever knew.
Those people that died
were just basically buried
in mass graves, you know?
No headstones,
nothing to memorialize them.
Think about the unrest
that that would create.
Sure.
That's sad.
It's very sad.
That's sad.
Are you upset because
you were not remembered?
Is that why you remain
in this house?
Please come
to the device.
Now that we've got the attention
of the spirits here,
it's time to cross them over.
I'm going to start
by lighting sage
and demand that
they leave this home.
- You ready?
- Yeah.
Okay.
So, stacey, I need you
to express to the spirits
in this home what you will
no longer tolerate,
so just speak right
from the heart.
Bulah cawthon, I've given up
my three rooms to you.
I am taking those back.
These three rooms now belong
back to jim and myself.
This is our home,
and our grandchildren
need to be able to come here
and feel secure and feel safe,
so, bulah...
You must leave here tonight.
You are no longer
welcome here.
You are to leave now.
All of you lost
to the yellow fever,
you have heard stacey.
You are not welcome
in this house.
It's over now.
You will let go of your grip
of this family.
Your reign is over
in this house.
You have no authority
over this family.
Leave.
Let the smoke carry you away.
Get...Out...
Of this house.
this is that moment.
It's done.
I feel it.
Tonight, I believe
I was able to help
stacey and jim
take back their home,
but their house
was only part of the problem.
I asked jim and stacey
to meet me at the cemetery
because there's still one last
thing that needs to be done.
I have asked members of
the community to join us
and help commemorate the souls
of the yellow-fever victims
who were unceremoniously
buried and forgotten.
We are finally going
to memorialize them here
at the hillcrest cemetery.
I'm well aware of how impactful
the yellow fever was
on this community,
and I believe that what
we're all doing here today
can truly bring closure and
bring peace to this community.
To bring some rest to this land,
to these fallen victims,
these forgotten victims,
I have something very special
here for all of you.
- Wow. That's wonderful.
- That's beautiful.
I like it.
Yeah, this is awesome.
That looks great.
To the forgotten victims
of the yellow-fever epidemic,
may they rest in peace.
So, as I walked around the town,
a lot of you told me
that the one thing that really
brings this community
together is music.
You referred to it as...
Hill-country blues
and cotton-patch-soul blues.
All right.
This wonderful gentleman here
is going to play us
some of that traditional music
from this area,
and I think
that the spirits here
would greatly appreciate that.
All right.
? I know ?
? your time was up ?
My hope is that by focusing on
what unites this town
and honoring the lost souls
of the yellow-fever epidemic,
holly springs will finally
be able to find peace.
absolutely did not believe
in the paranormal...
I never believed in ghosts.
I did not think
that they were real.
...That is, until I got here.
There were families
that bought that house
and moved out
the next morning.
It was a true living hell.
She attempted
to kill her parents.
- Here in this house?
- In this house.
They had a ouija board
and a crystal.
- S?ance.
- Yes.
- It's a dangerous game.
- Very dangerous.
Among the idyllic streets
and rolling fields
of america's heartland,
something evil lurks
in the shadows
of these close-knit
communities.
I know because I grew up here
and witnessed the fear
these hauntings caused
firsthand.
now, as a paranormal
investigator
and documentary filmmaker,
I've made it my mission
to travel the heartland
and bring resolution
to the living and the dead.
Holly springs is like
a small southern town.
Everyone knows everyone
in holly springs.
Folks come from all over
the world, really,
because we're
on the blues trail.
By the 1850s, holly
springs was the third-largest
and most populous town
in all of mississippi.
There was a confederate battle
here between van dorn and grant.
A couple of generals
stayed here,
and they built their homes here,
so the antebellum homes
are really something.
New folks are moving into town,
buying these old homes,
and strange things
are happening.
I mean, holly spring, it --
It is haunted.
You know,
there's been several stories
about just sick people,
but there's something here.
It's almost like
you're being watched,
but there's
nobody there.
We moved to mississippi
on a whim.
My wife kept on getting ads
for this specific home
on her facebook.
We were just basically
looking for a change,
and this house popped up.
It was $75,000.
It was in mississippi.
Never been to mississippi
before in my life.
Well, at the bottom of the house
ad, there was comments.
"a beautiful home."
"can't believe the price."
but there was this woman
named charlotte,
and charlotte had wrote,
"the house comes with a spirit,"
and she said that it was
a woman named bulah.
I laughed, and I said, "$75,000?
I'll live with it."
As the activity
in the house increased,
the kids really didn't want
to come over here.
I have two daughters
and two brand-new
grandbabies in my life,
and neither one of them
want to stay here.
The second I walked in the door,
I felt something was off.
We want to make sure
that our family is safe,
and it's hard
even to have my parents here.
That's tough when your kids
don't want to come here
because of the house,
and it's tough
when the grandkids are scared.
If we don't get help,
my daughter is not going to come
and visit anymore
with my granddaughter,
but I can't have that.
I want
my grandbaby to come and visit.
holly springs is definitely a
very small, little rustic town.
There's a lot of historic
homes here.
So, right now,
we're going to head over
and meet stacey and jim.
They bought a small historic
home here in holly springs,
and then right away,
started having a lot
of activity take place.
Definitely anxious to get
into that house
and hear their stories,
and they seem to be the type
that document their experiences
fairly well,
so that's going to be key
for me to understand
what's happening
in their house.
Hi. How are you? Welcome.
Steve.
Hi, steve.
I'm stacey.
How you doing?
I'm jimmy.
Jimmy.
Hi, brittany.
Brittany.
Nice to meet you.
All right, I'm going to mic you
guys up here real quick.
So, how long have you guys
lived here?
So, we've been here
about a year and a half.
We're from new york originally,
and for a year and a half,
it's been a lot
of different activity.
So, would you mind
showing me
where some of this
activity occurs?
Sure. I'll take you
right in here.
This home has three front rooms,
and the three front rooms
are from the original,
from the 1800s,
and a lot of things
happen here in this room.
Windows would open and close.
Curtains would spin around.
Chandeliers would
go on and off.
First three rooms here
are the oldest part of the home,
where a lot of activity
has happened,
and we kind of had it
in the back of our head
that it was haunted
from the conversations
that I had with the old owners,
but still didn't believe it
until we walked in
on our first night,
and I heard a woman cry...
...And I literally froze.
It scared me.
I wasn't going to get up
and find out what it was.
So, I kind of stay out
of these three rooms.
It's kind of like
I gave them three rooms.
You went
from a skeptic to,
"I give hundreds
of square footage of my home
to the spirits."
I mean, think about that
for a moment.
I mean,
that's a huge leap.
Other people
don't understand it.
They literally come,
and then they want to leave,
like my daughter
and the baby.
She doesn't like it
here, really.
I want to be able to come here
and see my family
and feel comfortable,
and I want my kid
to grow up the way I grew up.
So, you don't really get to
spend much time
with the granddaughter
as a result of...
No.
What experiences
have you had to make you
not want
to be back here?
I was actually standing in,
like, this position right here,
and I had
my daughter with me,
and I saw something
in the corner of my eye,
and I, like,
looked to see what it was,
and I saw this white, like,
it almost looked like
a little girl, run by the door.
And when she ran by it,
she knocked off a hat
that was on the wall.
I didn't know how to react
or respond.
I just wanted to go home.
How do you feel
about this home now?
It scares me.
I just want my daughter
to be safe.
Could you show me
where this took place?
Sure. Yeah.
So, it was
right in this area,
and this was actually the exact
hat that fell off the wall.
That definitely
confirmed it for me
that it wasn't
just something
that might have been
in my eye
or whatever
it might have been.
So, directly after
that incident,
my daughter had a laptop,
and I borrowed it,
and that's where I set it
on the floor
'cause it went by here,
and wanted to see
if I can catch it,
and I do have a video
for that, twice.
Can I see that?
Yes.
- Yeah, that would be great.
- Absolutely.
there you go.
Did you see that?
Yeah, absolutely.
It's fast, but I mean,
it's right there.
So, if they want you to see it,
you're going to see it.
so, it's all here
in this hallway.
What kind of things happen?
Well, lots
of different things.
I had a problem
with my dog.
So, king was my pit bull
and was acting different.
We went out one night.
We came home, and he had killed
one of the cats.
How long have you had the dog
for before it began
- to behave this way?
- Two years.
Two years,
and you never saw
any behavior
like that whatsoever?
No.
Absolutely not.
Absolutely not.
And it started off, he would
growl this very guttural,
low-toned growl.
There was
something wrong.
His eyes changed.
I can't explain it
to you.
What do you mean
his eyes changed?
Nothing in it.
Nothing in his eyes, just black.
The blackness of his eyes,
it led me to wonder
if he was possessed,
and then he bit me.
I was just standing there,
and he lunged and bit my arm.
That really unnerved me.
It wasn't him.
There was something in him.
There was definitely something
in him.
At that point,
we had to put him down.
The vet had never seen
anything like it.
And as soon as the doctor walked
over, that dog went crazy.
So, the vet didn't know
what to do,
and he called
the marshall county sheriff,
who had came out
with a dart gun.
One dart
would tranquilize him,
and then we could take him
and euthanize him.
They shot him once,
and he didn't sleep.
They shot him again.
He didn't sleep.
Four times,
and he didn't sleep.
They never saw
anything like it.
I'm in holly springs,
mississippi,
investigating stacey
and jim's house.
I'm most concerned about
whatever is affecting their dog.
If a spirit took over an animal
and caused it to turn
on its owner and attack them,
we're dealing with something
very powerful.
They shot him once,
and he didn't sleep.
They shot him again.
He didn't sleep.
Four times,
and he didn't sleep.
They never saw anything like it,
and then...They euthanized him.
I do think that was some type
of spirit, you know,
manifested in his body.
I know it was because
we had him cremated,
and we put him between us,
and the growl came back.
It was so loud,
so I don't think it was king.
I think
it was what was in him.
it was terrible.
Who do you think
is haunting this house?
I think there are a number
of spirits in this house.
Bulah cawthon is the only
one that we're aware of.
Why would you believe it
to be this woman?
This was her home
growing up
before she was
institutionalized.
Bulah was
institutionalized in 1920,
and she stayed in
the mississippi state hospital
for the insane
until she died in 1968.
50 years
in those conditions.
Yep.
And how did she
end up there, exactly?
She attempted to kill
her parents.
Here in this house?
In this house.
Her parents woke up
in the middle of the night,
and she was standing
over them with a knife.
So, it was the parents
that committed her.
She didn't go there
on her own free will?
No.
She was committed.
Committed. Okay.
So, she probably harbored
a lot of...
A lot of angst,
I would imagine.
A lot of angst.
And she's not done.
You know,
this house represented
the only bit of happiness
in her life,
so it's entirely possible
she could be attached here
and is the driving force
behind what happens here.
This is a serious thing.
Yeah.
And what happened
with the dog,
I mean, what kind of toll
is it taking on you now?
I'm not having
my grandbaby here,
and what happened to king
is tragic, absolutely tragic,
so it's taken a toll.
We got to do something.
From what stacey and jim
have told me,
it really sounds like there are
a lot of spirits in this house.
They believe one is a woman
named bulah,
but tonight, I need to find out
who is here,
how many spirits there are,
and how they got here.
tonight, we have
a lot of ground to cover.
Stacey and jim just left
for the night,
but after hearing
about their experiences,
so much activity
being described,
so many different rooms
and multiple spirits,
my plan right now is to try
to canvass this house with
as many different devices
as possible,
and I'm talking audio,
video, k-ii, emf, everything.
now this area here,
this is where stacey
was showing me that video.
it just seems to be a very
hot spot of the area,
for whatever reason,
of the home.
So, this is a music box.
There's the sensor.
Anything that crosses
the sensor,
it'll alert with the music
you just heard.
Of course, the light will flash.
My name is steve.
I was brought in by jim
and stacey.
They would like to know
who is in their home and why.
can you speak to me?
right there.
Rem pod just went off.
Whoever's here,
you can come to me.
that was a huge hit on that.
Why are you in this house?
What is your purpose?
please do not be afraid or
hesitant to communicate with me.
In fact, I'm going to check
my recorder to see if you did.
why are you in this house?
What is your purpose?
It's hard to hear what it says,
but you can clearly hear it
when I say,
"what is your purpose?"
why are you in this house?
What is your purpose?
two syllables.
So, we're going to have to dump
that and analyze that.
hold on. Hold on.
who are you?
I need you to acknowledge.
bulah, is that you?
Is it you who keeps approaching
my meter here?
Bulah, if it's you,
please approa--
wow. Right there.
Immediate response.
okay, bulah.
Do you want my help?
literally, we're --
I'm communicating
with whatever is in this room.
It was setting off the device,
little bit, little bit,
and then as I came back in
and really tried
to communicate with it,
it just went off
the charts repeatedly.
I really think bulah is here.
is something else here
in this house?
My god, guys.
This is just incredible.
At this point, I need to move on
and try to find out
what else is in this house.
I don't know if --
is that the music box going off?
look at this...Music box.
it's right in front of it.
It's got to be right
in front of that device.
Who's here?
the music box has not gone off
the entire night until just now,
and this is
the exact same spot
that the family caught
that apparition on video.
I mean, look at it.
It's still going.
Whatever it is,
it's playing with us.
Jamie, can you scan this area
with the sls?
is there anything here?
right over here?
My name is steve.
You can communicate with me.
I'm here to help you.
Can you reach out
and touch my hand?
yeah, I feel it.
I'm in holly springs,
mississippi,
investigating
stacey and jim's house.
I believe I was communicating
with a spirit named bulah
through the rem pod when
something set off the music box,
and the entity suddenly
appeared on the sls camera.
can you reach out
and touch my hand?
It touched your hand.
It touched your hand.
Yeah, I feel it.
man.
I just got a really,
really bad feeling
all of a sudden
about this.
is it gone?
Are you seeing
anything now?
What was happening
with the music box,
I don't even have
an explanation.
At this point,
I want to review the audio
from the digital recorder to see
if I can make out
what two syllables
I heard earlier.
okay, so, this is
the first vowel, right?
Yes.
Why are you
in the his house?
What is your purpose?
right there,
sound like a verbal --
why are you
in this house?
What is your purpose.
S?ance.
I literally heard
the word "s?ance."
hearing "s?ance" come out of the
digital recorder is very ominous
because when you mess
around with stuff like that,
you don't know
what you're letting in.
if there is indeed multiple
spirits in this house
that inhabit this home,
it's possible they could've
entered through a s?ance.
I need to find out exactly
what rituals were performed
in this house
and for what purpose.
I feel like my work is done here
for tonight,
but tomorrow, boots
on the grounds, very much so.
hearing the word "s?ance" last
night was really concerning.
You never know if the people
conducting the s?ance
really knew
what they were doing.
A ritual like that could've
opened up something evil
in the humphreys' house
and let evil spirits in.
We reached out to the former
residents
of the humphrey house,
charlotte and her sister angie,
and they agreed to talk to me
at a local coffee shop.
I'm hoping she can give me
more information
about this house
and its history.
Charlotte and angie?
Yes.
Hey, how you doing?
Steve.
Nice to meet you.
Hi, steve.
Nice to meet you.
So, I understand that --
which one of you are charlotte?
Right here.
You? Okay.
What can you tell me
about the house?
I lived in the house
with my grandmother.
My grandmother bought it in 1935
and was 93 when she moved out,
so they owned it
a long time,
about 65, 70 years,
something like that.
And during this
whole duration of time,
they've always felt
it was haunted?
Exactly.
Yes. Always.
So, after talking to stacey,
the current owner,
she said that when she came
across this property,
that somebody had
made a comment about,
"it comes
with a spirit."
so, that was you
that wrote that?
That was me.
Yeah.
I said,
"it's a wonderful house,
but it does come
with a live-in ghost."
do you think
stacey believed it?
I don't think she believed it
at first.
But everybody,
when we were kids,
knew the house was haunted.
Yeah, it was just
common knowledge.
There were families
that bought that house
before stacey did
and moved out,
leaving all their belongings
the next morning.
Some moved out the very night
that they moved in.
The first night?
So, during my initial
investigation,
I heard
the word "s?ance."
do you know
if anything like that
ever happened
in this house?
My uncle and myself
and couple of us others
sat on the floor with
a ouija board and a crystal,
and that stirred up
a lot of things that happened.
The wind blew,
the chandeliers blew,
and the curtain's blowing,
but no windows were open,
and no door was open.
And finally, something, like,
snatched my arm.
I couldn't scream.
I couldn't move.
I didn't know what to do.
Something had a hold
of my arm,
and I got up and ran
and screamed and ran,
and all of them
ran in there with me.
We pulled up my shirt, and there
was a red handprint on my arm.
You could see deep fingers
in my arm.
Bulah, that's who you think
did these things?
Right,
that's who I think.
That's who
we always said.
That's what we heard
as a child.
I mean, we had heard bulah since
we were kids,
so it was normal.
So, you believe it was her
that was communicating with you
through
the spirit board?
I do.
I mean, it was haunted before,
but this time, it was a rage.
The haunting changed.
Yeah.
The temperament changed because
it had always been haunted.
I mean, and we heard of it
as bulah,
but then I guess
it was more intense.
It was
a little different.
I mean, it was more --
the tone changed.
She was angry.
And why do you think
that bulah,
why do you think
she's angry?
She was in a mental institution
all her life,
all her adult life.
And I'm sure that made her
very angry
that she missed out
on her life.
Yeah.
You know?
And do you think
her goal was to --
she's just taking out this anger
on the people in the house?
Right.
Do you think that there could be
something darker in the house?
Yes.
I think there's something there
that wasn't there
when we were growing up.
Do you think
that could've been done
through the s?ance-type
activity?
It's a haunted town.
This town has got
so much history.
You've got
a whole cemetery
full of a whole generation
of children
that died...
With the yellow fever.
How many towns had
that kind of history?
Hearing about
this yellow-fever outbreak,
how many people died?
This is a small town, so I mean,
it sounds like
it really rocked this community,
and that's got to play a part.
But I appreciate you guys,
so thank you again.
Thank you again.
For sure.
Thanks.
All right.
Appreciate it.
We got to figure out
all the pieces,
and now,
after hearing this,
I want to learn more
about that outbreak.
I'm going to the museum
to meet up with
local historian
phillip knecht.
I really want to see if there
could be a connection
between the yellow-fever
epidemic of holly springs
and that activity
currently happening
at jim and stacey's home.
hey, how you doing?
Steve.
Steve, how you doing?
Phillip knecht.
Nice to meet you.
You, too, phillip.
Welcome to the marshall county
historical museum.
So, phillip, the reason I wanted
to talk to you is
I'm trying to get an idea
of the history of holly springs,
the town and
is there are connection
to a case
that I'm working on.
It's a house
with multiple spirits,
and I'm trying to figure out
who these spirits are
and why they seem
to be gravitating to this home.
I think we could help you
here at the museum.
Here in holly springs,
the town has been destroyed
and rebuilt
several times,
but by far, the most
traumatic event in holly springs
was the yellow-fever
epidemic of 1878.
When yellow fever arrived here,
we had 3,500 citizens here.
Within just 5 days, 1,500
of those had fled out of town.
The people left had
very little means.
They couldn't escape,
so for the next three months,
the 1,500 people that remained
were living
in a true living hell.
Entire families
were wiped out.
At this point,
the yellow-fever virus
is attacking
your inside organs,
including your liver
and kidneys.
You would be
hemorrhaging blood and bile
from every orifice
of your body.
Death would come very quickly,
but very horrible.
Wow.
That's disturbing
to even look at, isn't it?
It is very disturbing.
This is what every single
citizen would have encountered.
So many people were dying
that there were no more hearses
to deliver them
to the cemetery,
so the bodies were just
put on the courthouse lawn
and left to rot.
And by the end
of the epidemic,
we had lost 10%
of the entire population.
Wow.
I'm in holly springs,
mississippi,
speaking with a local historian
about the yellow-fever
outbreak of 1878,
which wiped out nearly 10%
of the town's population.
Such a devastating event
would certainly leave
a long-lasting scar.
And now you said there
was around 300-plus people?
At least we know
304 names,
and it could be as high as 350,
maybe even 400.
With that many deaths and people
dying in such an awful,
agonizing way,
this has got to play a part
in what is happening over
at this house.
I do know that this house
is actually
almost directly behind
the yellow-fever museum.
Even though it's hard
to get to it now
due to
modern constructions,
back then, that family
living in that house
would've been affected very
strongly by the yellow fever.
A lot of individuals
live in what we call
yellow-fever houses.
These are
houses in town
where we know
yellow-fever victims died.
Almost every single one
that now lives
in a yellow-fever house
has experienced
some sort of
paranormal activity.
We're talking dozens and dozens
of houses in this town.
Jim and stacey's home
is located right
where many of the yellow-fever
victims were treated,
so most certainly whomever
lived there at the time
would have
certainly been affected.
With that many deaths,
it would be impossible
that it wouldn't have had
a major effect
on the town
of holly springs,
and that's probably
why most people think
this community
is haunted.
I think you may have really shed
some light
on what's happening
with the case I'm dealing with,
and that's my
number-one priority.
Yes, sir.
Well, thank you so much.
Thank you.
All right.
Due to its location and age,
I think it's very likely
that jim and stacey's home
housed the spirits
of the yellow-fever victims.
And if they are there,
they are not alone
because I am positive
that bulah is in the home.
I really need to get
more information about bulah
and what her mental state
would've been like
when she was forced
to go to the asylum.
so, right now, I'm on the way
to meet with dr. Pannel,
who is actually
a psychiatrist.
I really need to know what
bulah was suffering from,
and if we can figure out
what afflicted her in life,
it'll help us figure out what's
happening in the house now.
I need to speak with
a professional
to find out
what is afflicting her
because if the house truly
is haunted
by spirits of
the yellow-fever epidemic,
how would somebody
with bulah's mind state
handle something like that?
hi. Dr. Pannel?
Yes.
How you doing?
Hi. Good.
Nice to meet you.
Good to meet you.
So, dr. Pannel,
as we discussed on the phone,
this case that I'm working on
in holly springs,
the family that I'm trying to
help, jim and stacey,
they believe that the ghost
in their house
is a woman named bulah,
and that it's rumored to believe
that she had
bipolar disorder
or some type of issue
with mental health
that led to her
being institutionalized.
So, I've researched bulah
and learned a lot about her.
It seems like the symptoms
that she was displaying
were very characteristic
of bipolar disorder.
There's two different forms,
a milder form,
which is bipolar ii,
and a more severe form
that is not very easily
treated called bipolar I.
It appears that
she had bipolar I.
Patients typically can present
very agitated, restless.
They don't sleep.
Hyperverbal,
they talk a lot.
They engage
in risky behaviors,
and oftentimes
they become psychotic.
You know,
and on that note,
bulah actually brandished
a knife on her sleeping parents.
Does that surprise you?
No, and I imagine,
because she was untreated,
that she probably
developed paranoia,
probably was delusional
and thought maybe
her parents
were out to harm her
and felt like she was
in legit danger,
so she was prepared
to protect herself.
I think that's probably
where institutionalization
back then came in.
That was the only way
to protect others,
was to basically
lock them up.
What would it be like
for bulah in the era
in which she was committed
into this mental institution?
What would the conditions
be like?
What would a patient
be going through at that time?
The conditions
weren't good.
I can't imagine there was
any quality of life,
and unfortunately, she wasn't
able to get effective treatment
because it wasn't available
during that time,
so symptoms
just continued to worsen
until psychosis
appears.
Based on the research
I've done,
I believe the house
was already haunted
by victims
of the yellow-fever epidemic,
even before bulah
was born.
Now if, in fact,
that were the case,
somebody who was suffering
from bipolar I
and living in a haunted house,
what could that do to them?
I could only imagine it
would escalate symptoms --
the paranoia
and the delusions,
and maybe she was even
having hallucinations.
If she was seeing spirits
or hearing things,
it would only reinforce
the symptoms
and worsen the symptoms
she already had.
My investigation
in holly springs, mississippi,
has led me to the office
of a local psychiatrist
who just informed me
that bulah,
the spirit we believe
is in the home,
suffered from the most severe
form of bipolar disorder.
The paranoia and the delusions,
and maybe she was even
having hallucinations.
If she was seeing spirits
or hearing things,
it would only reinforce
the symptoms
and worsen the symptoms
she already had.
And being untreated,
all of that together
just kind of
culminating.
Absolutely.
You have a setup for disaster.
Imagine spending 50 years
living under those conditions.
I mean, it's no wonder
that bulah
would be super angry and upset
and taking it out
on anyone around her.
I just feel
truly awful for her,
and I really wish we could
help her find some peace.
Well, dr. Pannel,
you've been a huge help.
Thank you
for involving me.
Definitely.
After speaking
with dr. Pannel,
I truly believe that the spirits
of the yellow-fever epidemic
were tormenting bulah
in her life and now in death.
When you have somebody
who is paranoid and delusional
in a house that's haunted,
that's a ticking time bomb,
and we need to get
back there right now
before something
even worse happens.
so, I wanted to talk to you guys
about what I've discovered.
During my investigation,
I believe I was able
to directly communicate
with the spirit of bulah.
There was a lot of concurrent
activity taking place,
which has really led me
to believe
that there are
multiple spirits in your home.
After speaking
with charlotte and angie,
it's really led me to believe
that this house was haunted
even before
bulah's death.
They told me
they conducted a s?ance
here in this house
right after bulah's death,
and honestly,
I believe that's what brought
her spirit
back to this home,
and I believe the other spirits
in your home
are the restless souls,
the angry souls
from the yellow-fever
epidemic.
With your home being
right here
in the middle
of that outbreak,
there's no way
that it wasn't affected.
I also spoke
to a psychiatrist
to find out more
about bulah's condition.
She told me that bulah
likely suffered
from a severe form
of bipolar disorder,
which would explain her erratic
behavior and anger outbursts.
She told me that
it was likely that bulah
could have suffered
from paranoid delusions.
I believe that she thought that
jim may have been her father
and actually caused
your dog to attack him.
I know you guys have
a strong attachment to bulah,
but with her behavior and
what's going on in this home,
I think it's best to cross
over all the spirits
here in this house,
including bulah
and the yellow-fever-
epidemic victims.
And if it's possible
to send them to the light,
that would be great.
So, you guys are okay
with staying with me
for a little while
and starting this?
Sure. Absolutely.
Absolutely.
Okay, I'm going to
head out to my vehicle,
bring in some gear.
If you guys want to just,
you know,
collect yourselves for a minute,
we'll get started.
Sure.
I've invited
jim and stacey to help cross
over the spirits
in their home,
but, first,
we need to call them out.
Now, this device here
is basically an emf meter,
and this is exactly where bulah
was communicating with me,
so if it's okay with you guys,
I'd like to start here
and see
if we can replicate.
Now I did all the talking
the other night, obviously,
but with you guys being here,
I'd like to see if you guys
could communicate with bulah
and see what would happen.
Bulah,
can you step forward?
is there anyone else here
with bulah?
is there anything else here
bothering you, any others?
yes.
This is exactly what I was
experiencing the other night.
Are there any
yellow-fever victims here?
my god.
are you afraid,
bulah?
yes.
I'm preparing to cleanse
jim and stacey's home
here in holly springs,
mississippi.
Normally, I'd have the family
leave for the evening,
but since they have
such a unique connection
to the spirit of bulah,
I believe their presence will be
key in cleansing the home.
Would you like us to help you
get them to leave,
leave this home,
cross over?
That's what we're here for.
okay.
this house has been active,
it seems to me,
since the yellow-fever
epidemic,
and then when bulah
passed away, she came here
because this is
the only home she ever knew.
Those people that died
were just basically buried
in mass graves, you know?
No headstones,
nothing to memorialize them.
Think about the unrest
that that would create.
Sure.
That's sad.
It's very sad.
That's sad.
Are you upset because
you were not remembered?
Is that why you remain
in this house?
Please come
to the device.
Now that we've got the attention
of the spirits here,
it's time to cross them over.
I'm going to start
by lighting sage
and demand that
they leave this home.
- You ready?
- Yeah.
Okay.
So, stacey, I need you
to express to the spirits
in this home what you will
no longer tolerate,
so just speak right
from the heart.
Bulah cawthon, I've given up
my three rooms to you.
I am taking those back.
These three rooms now belong
back to jim and myself.
This is our home,
and our grandchildren
need to be able to come here
and feel secure and feel safe,
so, bulah...
You must leave here tonight.
You are no longer
welcome here.
You are to leave now.
All of you lost
to the yellow fever,
you have heard stacey.
You are not welcome
in this house.
It's over now.
You will let go of your grip
of this family.
Your reign is over
in this house.
You have no authority
over this family.
Leave.
Let the smoke carry you away.
Get...Out...
Of this house.
this is that moment.
It's done.
I feel it.
Tonight, I believe
I was able to help
stacey and jim
take back their home,
but their house
was only part of the problem.
I asked jim and stacey
to meet me at the cemetery
because there's still one last
thing that needs to be done.
I have asked members of
the community to join us
and help commemorate the souls
of the yellow-fever victims
who were unceremoniously
buried and forgotten.
We are finally going
to memorialize them here
at the hillcrest cemetery.
I'm well aware of how impactful
the yellow fever was
on this community,
and I believe that what
we're all doing here today
can truly bring closure and
bring peace to this community.
To bring some rest to this land,
to these fallen victims,
these forgotten victims,
I have something very special
here for all of you.
- Wow. That's wonderful.
- That's beautiful.
I like it.
Yeah, this is awesome.
That looks great.
To the forgotten victims
of the yellow-fever epidemic,
may they rest in peace.
So, as I walked around the town,
a lot of you told me
that the one thing that really
brings this community
together is music.
You referred to it as...
Hill-country blues
and cotton-patch-soul blues.
All right.
This wonderful gentleman here
is going to play us
some of that traditional music
from this area,
and I think
that the spirits here
would greatly appreciate that.
All right.
? I know ?
? your time was up ?
My hope is that by focusing on
what unites this town
and honoring the lost souls
of the yellow-fever epidemic,
holly springs will finally
be able to find peace.
