In greeneville, I get this
overwhelming feeling of evil.

This is the bible belt,

but the satanic part
has always been around.

Dabbling with those things opens
up a whole different world.

Not only is it extremely
dangerous,

but it is growing day-by-day.

After we moved,
it didn't take long

until strange things
started happening.

Your first instinct
is, like, run.

I couldn't move.

The voice said,
"I am red death."



evil is a real thing

and it can consume someone.

It's here. It's here now.

and rolling fields
of america's heartland,

something evil lurks
in the shadows

of these close-knit
communities.

I know because I grew up here
and witnessed

the fear these hauntings
caused firsthand.

Now, as a paranormal
investigator

The town was born 1783.

It was named after

revolutionary war general
nathanael greene.

to live and work.

The town itself seems
like a normal town,

but you definitely get some
weird vibes when you walk in.

something very demonic

going on in greeneville.

The forces of evil,
once they take root,

they want to hang on
to what they have hold of.

all my life.

I'm out in the country.

Good place to live
and raise your family.

Gross: My mom, she was amazing
growing up.

It was just me,
her, and my sister.

She worked to provide for us

and give us everything
that we needed,

on top of taking care of
the house and everything in it.

I bought the land in 1992.

They started building
on the house.

It was finished March of 1993.

I had two daughters.

The older one, nicole,
and the younger one, becky.

Their father and I divorced
three years

after we moved to the house.

It was stressful.

I was a mother there by myself
for many years

with two small children,
and I was so excited and happy

to be able to have
a nice home for my kids,

and then it turns out that
there's something there with us,

and I know that
whatever it is is evil.

It was devastating.

After my divorce,
it didn't take long

until strange things
started happening,

things that I couldn't explain.

Three years after we moved
to the house,

we started having
a lot of issues,

and it's just stayed
with us through the years.

We've been tormented
all the time.

That's for sure.

Virtually nobody on the streets.
It's a Friday night.

Sadly, a lot of these
shops are closed up.

Growing up in the midwest,
this is a pretty common place.

You know, I've been to a lot
of communities like this.

I've lived in communities
like this,

but, you know, what they
lack in money and opportunity

they make up for
in heart and conviction.

We're gonna meet up with diane.

We need to find out exactly
what is happening

and has happened to her family.

I married my husband, tim,

and moved from my home
to his home.

My daughter, becky,
and her husband

and their three children
live in the house now.

I was just gonna sell
the house, but then becky said

that she wanted
to move back home, and I said,

"well, becky, what about
all the things that happened

through the years?"
you know.

Gross: We currently stay
in this house

because we really don't
have any other choice.

Financially-wise, we're not
stable enough to get a new home.

We're hoping that we won't have
to move out of this house.

[ thunder crashes ]

when my husband wakes up
and leaves for work,

I usually pack me
and my kids up

and go to my mom's house
for the day until he gets off.

Wow, so you have to do all
of that just to not be here?

Yep. Every day.

The first experience
that I had,

I was around about the age of
probably, like, 9, 10.

I was getting ready for school,
sitting in the kitchen,

eating a bowl of cereal,

and the basement door just
started shaking like somebody

was trying to open it
but couldn't.

This door here went...
[ door rattles ]

like that right there.
Scared her to death.

When it happened,
I immediately froze.

Like, your first instinct
is, like, run.

I couldn't move.

[ door rattling ]

and I just kept staring
at that door,

waiting for something
to come through.

It quit shaking.

We opened it and looked,
and there was nothing behind it.

At that point,
it was becoming pretty much

our day-to-day life
that things would happen.

We started having a lot
of issues in the basement.

Be careful on the steps.

Gross: If me and my friends
were down here,

we can definitely hear
somebody walking upstairs.

We would be here by ourselves
because she was usually at work.

Where she's at work most of
the time and we were down here,

we automatically
knew we were alone,

but you can still, plain as day,
hear somebody upstairs walking.

First thing that I remember
happening in the house

was a pounding
on the basement door.

This was the basement door
over here

that always had the boom,
boom, boom on it.

I would get up and look out
the bedroom window

and look down there.

I mean, the motion lights
would be on,

but there was nobody there.

There were, like, I think
two instances when I came home,

all the lights upstairs
were on.

When we came home, we'd always
come in the basement door

and go up this way,
so I turn on the lights,

I go up the stairs.

I open the door, pitch black.

Nobody was here.

Why do you think
that it was always pounding

on that door over there?

Is there a significance?

I have no earthly idea.

It was never the front door
nor the back door.

It has always been that door
right there.

And later on, my nephew, brett,
he moved into this room.

He said time and time again
he would see a shadow

just walk by the door

and he would think
that someone was down here.

He said, "aunt diane, I get up
and I come out here,"

and he's said
there's no one here.

And his bedroom
was in this room?

There was a bed in this room.

I have said something to her
about putting a bed down here,

and she said,
"absolutely not. No way.

There's never gonna be
a bed put back down here."

there's never gonna be
anything in here but storage.

And now all this
is storage now,

and it was in this room
where he said

that something actually
held him down in the bed.

He said, "who is this?"

and the voice said,

"I am red death."

he was trying to get up,
but it wouldn't let him up.

Did anybody else
in this home suffer

that type of abuse
of which you spoke of?

Bright:
I know that whatever is in that

room in that basement is evil.

I felt like I couldn't
protect my children.

You always want to protect
your children,

but you can't fight
something you can't see,

or something you can't touch.

stayed in this room

and having been assaulted,

since he's left this house,

has his life changed
for the better or for the worse?

of evil in this house.

she was always a happy child,

at the top of her Sunday
school class, getting awards,

but when she got about
12 years old,

she just -- she changed.

She would be happy one minute
and crying the next,

and I would ask her, I'd say,
"honey, what is wrong?"

and she'd say,
"I don't know, mama,"

and I said, "nicole, you have
to know why you're crying."

I said, "now, there's nothing
you can't tell me,

but I can't help you
if you don't tell me,"

and she said,
"mama, I don't know."

nicole would always tell us
about demons

that she would see
in the night,

and she said that
she can feel, like,

the hate
and the hatred in them.

She said that they were evil
and mean,

and that she just
wanted them gone.

My sister nicole eventually
moved out of the house

after graduating high school.

Even after moving out,
it was like whatever evil

was in the house
kind of went with her.

Everywhere she moved to,

she had issues
with something bothering her,

somebody bothering her
or seeing somebody.

Nicole felt like she was
being chased

and being tormented all the time
until the day she passed away.

The night that nicole
passed away,

I could feel like
something was wrong.

The state trooper
that had spoke with us

told me what had happened.

Bright: The man said that
she ran up to him,

begging him for help.

The man that had seen
my sister said

that she came out
of nowhere screaming

that they were after her,
they were trying to kill her.

That they were coming
to get her.

Bright: When the man got out
to pump the gas,

she jumped in the driver's seat
and sped off,

and she crashed probably
four miles down the road.

Nobody really seen
anybody behind her.

No cars, nobody running,
no nothing.

I don't know why it was
following her

or clinging to her,
but it was not letting her go.

She was terrified and to her,

I guess,
she was running for her life.

I'll take you to
the middle bedroom.

This is where my daughter
nicole slept

when she started
seeing spirits in the house.

My two granddaughters
are in here now,

but at the time, you know,

there was just one
full-sized bed in here.

My very youngest daughter,
she actually will scream,

cry, and have a fit
not to sleep in this room,

and she won't tell me
why at all.

She just says she has bad dreams
and she don't like it.

Something took place here,

and we need to figure out
what that is.

Diane believes she lost
her daughter nicole

due to the spiritual activity

and attachment here
in this house.

Now her other daughter and her
grandchildren are at great risk.

We need to find out
exactly what's going on

before it attaches
to one of them.

stay at diane's house

so my crew and I can start
our investigation

and get to the bottom of
what's happening in this house.

I think we're dealing

with something very intelligent,
and something very evil.

in that home.

There was a time when she
told me about this one friend,

there was something
in her house.

It scared nicole.

My daughter had a friend.
Her name was stacy.

When my daughter, nicole,
stayed over at stacy's house,

she said stacy's mom

practiced witchcraft,

and had spirit boards and books
on things like that,

and she said, "mama," she said,
"it's really scary."

after that night,
it was honestly almost like

the little girl
I knew was gone.

The malevolence
that's taking place now,

and has for a long time,
did that start to really ramp up

once she was hanging out
with her?

Probably pretty close
around that time.

So it was pretty close?

When she was around
12 years old, yeah.

Here's my fear at this point,

it sounds to me
that they summoned

something in that house --

...And I'm starting to wonder
or theorize

that it could've attached
to your daughter, nicole --

unbeknownst to herself.

I think that's very possible.

is a group of people

that wears
black cloaks, hooded cloaks.

They March to the river,
and they set up their altar,

satan.

What are the lillelid murders?

The lillelid murders happened
20 years ago,

but it's still a very
sensitive subject around here.

A lot of people
remember that very vividly.

Police have new information
tonight

about a brutal killing spree
in greene county.

The victims are the lillelid
family from powell, tennessee.

Triangles were used
in blood rituals.

Were the lillelid murders

the result
of a senseless frenzy,

or a calculated ritual?

They just shot them
one by one.

They laid them in the ditch,

took the vehicle
and run over them.

For somebody to do something
like that,

there has to be something very
demonic going on in their head.

A brutal murder happened
here in 1997,

just a few years
before the activity

began in diane's home.

That family was very religious.

They were coming back from
a jehovah's witness conference

or whatever it was down
at freedom hall in johnson city,

and the pulled over
at a rest area in greeneville.

Husband, the wife, and two
little children.

Mr. Lillelid was in
the restroom,

and he was speaking
to the killers.

He didn't know at the time.

He just thought that they were
just kids at the rest stop,

and he was telling them
how important it was

to know jesus christ,

you know, how important
it was to be a christian.

Next thing he knows,
they're showing him the gun.

They told him that all they
wanted was the vehicle,

and they drive him out
to a remote area,

a little backroad, and they just
shot them one by one.

They laid them in the ditch

and made a cross
out of their bodies.

For somebody to do something
like that,

there has to be something very
demonic going on in their head.

You do something like that,
to me,

I believe that's gonna
open up something.

It's going to cause more
activity, more demonic activity.

In my opinion,
satan had a plan.

The murders happened in 1997,
and it wasn't long after that

that nicole
started witnessing witchcraft

in the community and activity
increasing in diane's home.

I believe happened to nicole --

it followed her home,
and I believe that

tormenting that family.

in pikeville, kentucky,

in a particular room that they
rented on a regular basis

in order to perform
these satanic rituals.

They had razor blades,
candles.

They cut each other,
sucked each other's blood

and declared they were
gonna go

across the country,
robbing and killing people.

Reading back over it,
it still pisses me off.

I'm sorry to use that language.

My blood got boiling again
just reading about it

getting ready
for you guys to show up.

There was only so much that
mr. Bell was able to tell us,

but I really need to know
exactly what these teens did,

and what they were
trying to accomplish.

that actually worked
the lillelid murder case

and was one of the first
responders on the scene

to see if I can get
more information about the case.

They were laying with their feet
on this side of the ditch

and their heads on that side
of the ditch, side by side.

Delfina's body was
laying here first,

with tabitha on her chest,

and then vidar was right
next to her,

and peter was on his chest.

Right, so they were
positioned.

They could have been shot
and fallen that way.

I just don't see it.

Delfina was shot three times
in the abdomen.

The gunshots formed a perfect
equilateral triangle,

and vidar had the same
shot pattern in his abdomen --

a perfectly
symmetrical triangle.

there's an overwhelming amount
of symbolism going on here.

This is definitely physical

evidence that is strange.

than just a homicide,

Maybe they did conjure up
some forces that stayed, yeah,

and permeated

There could be other people
out there

who experience it
and don't recognize it.

this was human sacrifice,

the most powerful
of all satanic rituals.

It's my theory that these teens
opened up a portal,

unleashing evil
onto this entire community.

People in greeneville
participating in witchcraft

and other occult activity
only strengthen the demon

that attached to nicole,
and then, when she passed away,

the entity latched
onto the rest of the family.

and try to rid this family
of this haunting for good.

and exhausting.

I don't know that I've ever
dealt with evil

that strong before.

Now we need to have diane

This is where we began
a cleansing process last night,

a blessing to rid
this house of

whatever dark forces
that are here.

As I worked my way
around the basement here,

this is where everything
took quite a change.

I believe your home was taken
over by evil,

and last night
we confronted it.

My colleague, jamie, had her
hair pulled by something.

Right around this area
I was pushed from behind.

I continued the prayer.

I said it multiple,
multiple times.

Used the holy water.

Used all the blessed items.

I then turned my attention
to this door

where you would hear
that pounding so many times.

I believe this to be the point
of origin

because if nicole would have
used that door to come

and go in the home,

I think it was signifying this
is where it came into the house.

During the course
of my investigation,

I found out that a family
was murdered in this town

in the 1990s.

Many people believe that
these brutal murders

unleashed evil
into this community,

and, frankly, I don't think
it ever left, and in my opinion,

I think the evil found
it's way here attached to nicole

when she witnessed
the witchcraft

taking place
at her friend's house.

I'm really sorry that you had
to go through this,

that she had to go
through this,

but I don't want you to carry
that weight any more,

but in the case
of a demonic haunting,

there is always a possibility
that it will come back.

These things feed off of fear.

The best way to stop that
is to have your faith strong --
