Living in merrill,
it seemed like a dream at first.

Eventually, it was a dream kind
of turned more into a nightmare.

It was like living in hell.

When I was washing
dishes, all of a sudden,

I just feel this cold,
and I was thinking,

"somebody is here."

I've handled shootings.
I've handled homicides.

Those investigations
don't even compare to this.

This room seemed to fill

With, like, burling black smoke.

And then he noticed it.



There was three scratch marks
on my neck.

You're playing...
you're playing with satan.

Among the idyllic streets

And rolling fields
of america's heartland,

Something evil lurks
in the shadows

Of these close-knit communities.

I know because I grew up here
and witnessed the fear

These hauntings caused
firsthand.

Now, as a paranormal
investigator

And documentary filmmaker,

I've made it my mission
to travel the heartland

And bring resolution
to the living and the dead.

Merrill is an old community.

It's quiet.
It's slow-paced.



You still have that
hometown feel.

The communities were
officially established

In the early 1850s.

So this is a huge farm country.

Merrill is a super,
like, sweet town.

Everybody waved at each other

And just real
down-to-earth people.

Everyone who lives
in merrill knows

There's just a weird energy

That's running
through this town.

I grew up in merrill
pretty much my whole life.

We used to always talk
and mention to each other

How awesome it would be
to have this house.

Something about the place
just kind of drew you in.

It used to be an old store
at one time.

We love old stuff, history
and antiques and stuff,

So it just fit, you know,
like a hand in a glove.

We bought the house
about 15 years ago.

I fell in love with the house.

Like, this is gonna be
our final house.

It was supposed to be,
you know, my dream place,

And now
it's more like a nightmare.

Activity has gotten so bad
in this house

That my son, josh,

And my granddaughter,
aidabelle, had to leave.

Whatever is in this home is...

It's just trying
to destroy our family.

If we can't get things
to change soon,

We may possibly have to sell
the house and move ourselves.

So right now,
I'm headed to go meet

With the midcalf family.

Mike contacted me in regards
to strange

And anomalous activity
taking place in his home.

It's an urgent situation because
mike had relayed the fact

That his granddaughter,
aidabelle,

Seems to be targeted
by whatever is in the house.

Aidabelle is right at
that age that I was

When I first realized
that my home was haunted,

And I started
to experience activity.

I've lived through it.

I know how traumatizing
it can be,

So I just had to take
on this case.

Wow.

That's definitely an old
general store right there.

Hey, mike?

What's the story
behind this home?

The house was built in 1845.

It was a general store,
and then they lived over here.

So it seems like around here,
that probably would be

The only store
for miles and miles.

For miles.

When the postman would come by
to the store

To drop off the mail,

There was farmers that
would frequent the store,

And he'd leave their mail here.

And then
the postmaster general said,

"hey, we can't continue
delivering mail here

Because it's not
considered a town,

So you're gonna have
to claim this as a town."

And the owner of that store

Was really close
to his mother-in-law.

Her name was iva,

So he decided
to name the town iva.

- So that's how it began?
- Yes.

So this was the first structure

That started the town of iva?

Yeah, literally,
the town of iva.

And now this is all just
part of merrill?

This place was a big deal.
It was a big deal.

I mean, it was everything.
It was a post office.

It was a general store.

Yeah.
It was a hangout.

There's so many people
that drive by here

And just reminisce.

Nobody ever wants
to come in, though.

We always tell them,
"come on in,"

But they never want to come in.

I think that the house
is haunted.

I just don't know.

I knew it needed a lot of work,

So we started
the renovation in 2006.

I'd start working, and as
I got going into, like,

Cutting a board or something,
the saw would stop,

And the lights would go out.

I looked through the corner
of my eye,

Could see a figure
standing on the steps.

I guess we can get right
down to it.

You want to take me to some
of the hot spots

Where you're experiencing
the most activity?

Sure. Yeah.
I'll show this to you.

There was an instance
when I was washing dishes.

You know, I'm just looking away,
and all of a sudden,

I just feel this cold,
and it was a hand.

It wasn't just a little thing.

It was just...
it was like a hand.

My hairs were just standing up,
and it, you know, it just, like,

Looked like,
"wow," and I was thinking,

"somebody is here."

After my encounter,

My son, josh,
had a terrible experience.

I was about 17 at the time.

I came into the kitchen
for just a little snack

Before I go to bed,

And I just went
to walk out of here.

It's like I just couldn't go
into the living room

To go past
to go up to my bedroom.

It's like there was some sort
of presence that I just...

I felt very uneasy

To step any farther out
of the kitchen.

But as I'm looking out here,
it's like this room

Seemed to fill with, like,
burling black smoke.

In fact, I stood back here,
and I actually...

I slept on this counter here,

This really thin, little place.

You slept on this counter?

I took everything off,
and I slept.

I just couldn't go any farther
out of this kitchen.

It was a little embarrassing
at the time.

You know, I think
I'm being a man.

You know, I'm calling
for my parents and...

- They were upstairs?
- Yeah.

But I couldn't get my voice out
for them to hear me enough,

And so I just decided this
would be my night right here,

And I'll explain it
in the morning.

- It's a lot to absorb.
- Yeah.

Yeah, it is.
- It's hard to...

You know, when you're not there
for your kid,

Thinking he sat down here
all night scared to death.

Scared to death.
Sleeping on a counter.

You know, you've got your wife

And your, you know,
your child there.

You're supposed to be
the husband,

The father, the protector
of the family,

And when you no longer
can feel like you

Can protect them anymore,

You know, it's a hard thing
to deal with

Because you don't want to
ever admit that you're scared.

So, aidabelle, could you try
to explain your experiences

In this house?

It was the night when the man
walked into my room.

I couldn't sleep that night.

I heard footsteps coming.

When I realized it wasn't
my grandma or my grandpa,

Then I was scared.

I wanted to pretend
that I was sleeping,

So I went right under my covers,

And I thought that
it would never go away.

And then I just felt coldness
in front of my face.

Right when I opened my eyes,
its face was in my face,

So I shut them right back.

I'm waking her up,

And she's telling me all this,

And, to me,
it sounded like it was

A bad nightmare
or something, and...

I felt pain, like, burns
in the back of my head.

And then he noticed it.

There was three scratch marks
on my neck.

I'm in merrill, michigan,

Investigating a 200-year-old
general store.

The midcalf family restored
the building,

But now they're saying
that a strange force

Is threatening their dream home

And even their granddaughter,
aidabelle.

There was three scratch marks
on my neck.

I asked her,
"did you scratch yourself

In your sleep
or something?"

And she said, "no, I wouldn't...

It's not that kind
of a scratch."

She had burns on the back
of her head and on her neck.

It was like human finger marks,

But it was slightly larger
than her hands, really.

What was that like
for you? I mean, did that...

Were you afraid
of the room after that?

Were you afraid to sleep there?
How did that affect you?

Well, I was scared to sleep
in the room

Because I thought
he'd come again.

Right when I got scratched,

I felt like this house
isn't the same anymore.

It made me terrified.

I feel like I'm gonna
remember this

For the rest of my life now.

What was your reaction
when you guys found

Those scratches
on little aidabelle here?

It hits you very hard
as a father,

And from what the experiences
that I've been seeing,

I can't help but start
to believe her now.

And I got to say, too,
we've done everything

That we can possibly do
to her room

To where she would feel safe
and want to be in there.

We've painted it.

We put a new bed in there.

I got a new light fixture.

I mean, we've done everything,
and she still just does not...

She will not sleep in that room.

Why don't you show me that room?

The night that you saw the man,

Could you kind of maybe
show me exactly what he did?

I heard footsteps
coming from the stairs.

He was just walking,
and he stood right here.

He stopped, and I saw
that he had a lantern,

So I knew that it
couldn't have been anyone.

You couldn't see a face?

You couldn't make out
what they looked like?

Yeah.
I couldn't see anything.

It was just pitch-black
with smoke around him.

His face was like black smoke?

There was nothing on his body
or on the floor.

It was just his face,

And then
he left into the closet.

Well, once he went
in the closet,

If you look at that
closet door there,

Our dog,
we had a labrador at the time,

Went and just attacked
that door.

Look how deep these gouges are.

She was a black lab,
a very mellow, loving dog,

So she's not vicious.

So for her to do that
is very out of character.

Wow.

Did you see that light
just flicker?

- Yeah.
- Yeah.

What, it go out?

No, it flickered.

Yeah.
A bulb went out.

See that?

- Okay.
- Those are new.

Yeah. We just put that up.
We just put that up.

These light bulbs are brand-new?

That... Yep.
We just put that up.

And you ever have a power surge
like that

That knocks out a light bulb?

Never.
Yeah.

I mean, right above our head,

Right while we're talking
about this specifically.

Right when we happen
to talk about this.

With all the, you know,
all the stories,

All the activity
that you've dealt with,

I think we need
to start investigating.

We can put you guys up
in a hotel.

We could just get right on this.

It'd be great to have you
do this for us.

Seeing that light bulb
pop right in front of me,

That's a sign
of an intelligent haunting.

An intelligent haunting
is a spirit

Or some type of deity
that is just that.

It's intelligent.
It knows you're there.

It's aware of your presence.

It can interact with you,
communicate

And sometimes even harm you.

Tonight, my crew and I
are gonna start

By going upstairs to the bedroom

Where aidabelle
was actually scratched.

I need to experience that type
of activity myself to figure out

What is actually haunting that
room and the midcalf family.

I'm gonna place

If this is truly
an intelligent haunting,

It should interact with us
in some type of way,

Whether it be vocally,
moving an object, knocking.

Through the method of
call-and-response,

If it is an intelligent
being that we're dealing with,

I should be able to elicit
some type of response.

And it sounds almost like

Whatever it is, it made
its intentions very clear.

This voice is a sign
that an intelligent being

Is haunting this home.

I heard the voice and see

If I can get it
to communicate with me again.

I thought I heard it over here.

I see a lot of old antiques.

I could understand why
you might be attached.

It's not uncommon
to see spiritual attachment

Where an entity can actually
attach itself

To a tangible, physical object
for a number of reasons.

What's that?

Were you attached to this?

Is that why you were over here?

Does this doll mean
something to you?

Sometimes, if you move an item,
they could disrupt the spirit.

You can come get your doll.

It's right here
in aidabelle's room.

It's a very uneasy
feeling up here.

Before we go, I think
it'd be a good idea

To set up some cameras
in key spots,

Particularly aidabelle's room.

Then my crew and I later
can analyze that footage

And the audio to see
if there's any more clues

To help us figure out
what's happening here.

So I'm in merrill, michigan,

Where a mysterious entity

Is terrorizing
the midcalf family

And even their young
granddaughter, aidabelle.

My crew and I left cameras
running overnight in the home.

After reviewing the evidence,
what we captured was phenomenal.

This clip is about an hour
and 30 minutes long.

Now, look at this here, okay?

The camera zooms all the way
into the pillow on its own,

Which is impossible,

And then even more insane,
it zooms all the way back out.

That's not possible.

The only way you can zoom
in and out

Is to do this right here,
manually with your finger,

So something was affecting
our gear

And playing around
with the camera.

That interaction proves
that it has intelligence.

It makes you wonder.

With the type of activity
in that house,

I almost feel like we could have
put that camera anywhere,

And whatever was in there
would have messed with it

Because I think it was
sending us a message that,

"I know you're here,
and I'm showing you

That I have this intelligence."

What's happening at
the midcalf family

Really reminds me
of a case just down the road,

The old pomeraning farmhouse.

They bear a very
similar hallmark.

I grew up listening to tales

About the old
pomeraning farmhouse,

Heard about it
from multiple people,

But I want to talk to the people
that were directly involved

With the investigation.

I want to speak to the former
police sergeant of merrill...

Hey, mr. Frisby.
Yes.

...And the old chief
of the fire department,

David lednicky,
to separate fact from fiction.

Yeah. Nice to meet you.
Same here again.

And more importantly,
I want to speak

To the pomeraning brothers...
terry and duane.

Their childhood was essentially
stolen from them

As an evil entity
ravaged their family

And destroyed their lives.

Gentlemen.
Hey, there, how you doing?

Terry and duane haven't even
stepped foot in that house

In over 40 years,
but luckily for us,

They've agreed to come back out
and see if in any way

They could help
save another family

From going through
what they did.

Can you guys tell me,
when was this house built?

- Back in, like, 1890s.
- 1890s, yeah.

- Yeah.
- Wow.

So this goes back in your family
for over a century, this land.

Right.

Can you guys tell me
when the activity first began?

Yeah.

It was end of June of 1974,
just one night.

Our whole family had
probably been in bed

For a couple hours.

There was a knocking
on the east side of the house.

All night long,
it was constantly,

Like, banging and banging,
and it wouldn't stop.

We hurried up and looked out,

And we didn't see
nobody out there.

My dad called 911
and just figured

Maybe someone
was attempting to break in.

Our officers were dispatched

To mr. Pomeraning's house.

I could hear the noise.

Noise came,

Noise passed in front of me,

And I called my partner
on the radio.

I said, "did you hear that?"
he says, "yes."

He said, "I hear it,
but I don't see anybody."

Well, we started looking around.

Of course, it'd been raining.

There was no footprint,
nothing that would indicate

That anyone had walked
through that wet grass.

We heard it.
We can't explain it.

Then the next night
after it got dark,

The knocking started.

There was nobody there.

So we called the police
out again.

No one had seen anything.

What happened from that point?

How did this develop?

The police came every night
for the first six months.

Six months?

Every day for six months,
the pounding happened?

Yep.

It was very terrifying,

And I actually
cried myself to sleep.

I have never ever, ever had
a prowler call

That continued to grow
as this one did.

These are the reports
from our department.

There's 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8,

9, 10, had to be close
to 20 officers.

8/27 of '74,

Two officers were sent there.

They found nothing.

Another one, 9/10,
2 officers again.

This again is all capitalized

And underlined so many times.

I mean, what does that tell you?

That the officers
were starting to get

A little perturbed

About continuously
going out on a call

Where they could find nothing.

The state police
became involved.

Later on, the state fire marshal
became involved.

I think a seismologist
got involved in it.

No one has ever come up
with a solution.

So can you guys tell me,

How did things
escalate from there?

So him and I are walking
one night,

And all of a sudden,
that red barn,

You could smell smoke,
so we walked over there,

And we thought
the barn was on fire.

There was, like,
smoke coming out of the barn.

Within, like, 30 seconds,
the smoke was gone.

It's like it was magic.
Okay.

Now, was this the only time
that this happened,

Or was there some type
of actual pattern?

One afternoon,

Me and my brother
and my dad were watching tv,

And all of a sudden like,
"yeah, it almost seems like

I smell smoke
or something burning."

So I went
and checked the bathroom.

A full roll of toilet paper

Burned up
in a matter of a few seconds.

The first time we were
called out there

Was in February of 1975.

Roll of toilet paper
caught on fire.

That roll of toilet paper

Apparently put out enough smoke,

You know,
where it filled the house,

But yet there wasn't
any basic fire.

There wasn't even any
burning of anything

On the wall in that bathroom.

They checked it for accelerants.

Yeah, any type of alcohol

Or anything like gas
or anything.

There was nothing in it.

And they couldn't determine
a rational cause?

No, we couldn't find anything,

What the accelerant
was or anything.

It just, you know, it happened.

You guys had this pounding

Going on every night.

You guys had fire,
spontaneous combustion.

Can you guys tell me,
when did the activity end?

We had a real big fire back on
Halloween night of 1975.

We had a back room
that was on fire.

That was a hot room.

That's where they had a lot
of their pictures

And memorabilias and stuff,

And all of that was destroyed.

We wanted to get up
in the attic,

And so our assistant chief
got an attic ladder up there,

And he got the door opened up,
and he went to get up,

And like somebody was pushing
him back, pushing him back.

He couldn't get up
through there.

My brother almost died,
though, from it.

By the time they got out here,
which was almost 20 minutes,

25 minutes later,
he was turning blue already.

I really thought he was dead
or gonna die.

How would you feel
if it was you,

You two, had come back here
and almost died in this house

After all these years
and have to do this interview?

How would you like to do that?

Hearing about the infamous

Growing up, terry and duane
pomeraning experienced

Activity very similar
to the midcalf family,

And I want to see if the two
cases could be connected.

We had a real big fire.

type of activity

With so many hauntings
per capita in a small location,

What interests me the most
is what happened on this land.

Could something have happened
on the property, the land,

To be causing
the residual activity today?

I really need to look into
the history of this area.

I got to find out more about
what happened there,

And I need to dig into it

And get the knowledge
and the information.

What can you tell me about
merrill and this community?

Well, the communities
all out there

Were officially established
in the early 1850s.

People would buy wooded lots
and start homesteading

And clearing the land for farms.

So, leo, mike midcalf
and his family

Told me that their home,
the old iva general store,

Is the only remaining building
left from the town of iva.

How could that be
the only building left?

I mean, what happened

To the rest of the homes,
businesses?

One of the things that did
happen early on about 1873...

Yeah?

...There was a smallpox
epidemic.

You know, in a small community
like that,

Smallpox is super,
super contagious.

So what they did is,

They burned the houses down

To stop the spread.

So that was the way
they just dealt with it

Is just set the house on fire?

That is absolutely horrible.

Or they would literally
board people's doors

And make them stay in there
until it was over.

Forceful quarantine.
Yes.

I would think that many people

Never even made it
out of the quarantine,

That they were boarded up in
their house, could have been...

A whole family just dying
right there.

Maybe they were, you know,
the high fever, everything,

They just kind of knew,
"hey, they're a goner.

There's no reason
to even try to save them."

You think it's possible
that some of these people

Were burnt alive?

A mysterious entity is
threatening the midcalf family.

I'm here at the hoyt library
doing research to find out,

What could have happened
out there on that land?

What could be the cause
of all that activity

The community of merrill
is experiencing today?

And I just discovered
that the area was ravaged

By a smallpox epidemic
in the 1870s.

You think it's possible

That some of these people
were burnt alive?

Maybe they were, you know,
the high fever, everything,

They just kind of knew,
"hey, they're a goner.

There's no reason
to even try to save them."

In theory, they could have.

This is one of the most tragic
cases I've ever dealt with.

I mean...

So with the town of iva,

Which is now currently merrill,
being lost and gotten...

I mean, the whole town
perished in fire.

What you were saying
about the general store,

Now, that would be
considered iva, right?

Yes, that's pretty much
what's left of iva.

I can show you just how close
some of these areas are.

This was where homesteads
in the area

Are being burned down.

This is where the store is.

Yeah.
So that would be iva?

Yep, and then here is

Where the pomeranings' home is,

And I didn't realize it is...

It's literally
on a straight line.

Okay, so all this is
just on one road,

This main artery
right through here.

Yes.

It's all within
a 4-to-5-mile area.

The general store,
this could very well be still

The meeting spot
of the folks in iva today.

And they would...

It would be a place
that they would've all known.

I felt that the first night.

My feeling in this room is,
"I lost my child.

Why is your child
so special?"

So you think that's
just animosity.

Yeah.

Yeah, I'm feeling it.

This is one angry man.

This man lost his entire family,

And he's the only one
that's left is what I got,

But there's a real anger
about losing his family.

Does that make any sense to you?

It makes a lot of sense to me.

People lost everything they had.

And I also feel, like,
a jealous energy.

He just wants family.

He just wants his family back,

And if you want to call him
the night watchman,

I guess is what
I want to call him.

Somewhere in the
historic record,

There's a man

That would have kept track
of everything, okay,

That had to burn to the ground.

I'm getting that feeling.

And this house was supposed
to be burnt to the ground.

Right, I got, "yes."

the spirit here now or what?

That's where I was
getting information from,

But what I get
is that it's behind us.

I think that that
is where it hides

Or where he hides
or where he comes from.
