Glow Up: Britain's Next Make-Up Star (2019–…): Season 4, Episode 4 - Episode #4.4 - full transcript

[Maya Jama] It's time to Glow Up

[cheerful music plays]

This week, we're on a shoot
in central London

where the MUAs will be creating
the picture-perfect party looks

Who's ready to get snap-happy?

Say "cheese."

[energetic electronic music playing]

All eyes are on the MUAs
as we go close up on their contour

and superzoom their shadows

as they get to work on a beauty campaign

for global retailer H&M

Today's a biggie, and trust me,

you don't want to be
fashionably late to this party

[Rachel] I wanna see what's inside

Ooh, I like this

Morning, MUAs

- Hey
- Hey, good morning

I hope you're excited
about today's assignment

because this one is major

- Ooh
- Oh, I hope

[all chuckle]

You'll be doing a job that is aspirational

for lots of professional makeup artists

You will be doing a beauty campaign

[all] Ooh!

For your campaign,
you'll, of course, need a client

So let me introduce you
to your guest judge,

and boss for the day...

Marjorie Lacombe-Jelinek,

Global Creative Director for H&M Beauty

[all cheer]

[Maya] Retail giant H&M
have branched out into the beauty biz

with their own range of cosmetics

Global campaigns reach millions of people
in over 50 countries around the world

Today, you'll be working for me
on our summer advertising campaign

The theme for this campaign
is summer night party

So, I want to see bright
and colorful makeup looks,

with the focus on our vivid eyeliners,
eyeshadows, and lip colors

I also really want
to see a top-notch glow

And, of course,
these are supposed to be party looks

So your model has to look
like they're ready to go for a night out

Now, this is a tricky balance

It needs to be inspiring enough
to catch the customers' attention,

but it can't be too out there
that it doesn't fit the brief

I will select one look to be featured
in our global summer campaign,

being shot tonight,

which will go live online in 50 countries

- Oh, my gosh
- To be seen by millions

- Wow. [chuckles]
- Smashing

This is definitely my kind of thing

This is literally, like,
the dream prize as well

[all cheer]

- [Rachel] Let's go!
- Oh, my God

The prize is huge
Like, going out to 50 countries,

and having your work displayed
to that many people is insane

[Maya] The winning MUA's work

will be seen by the biggest audience
ever reached on a Glow Up assignment

- [Nancé] Hi
- Hi

- Hello. I'm Lisa
- Nice to meet you!

MUAs, I will need your models
to be ready and on set

to be photographed in two hours

All right. Let's get cracking

[cheerful disco music playing]

[Marjorie] It's really important
that the MUAs use our products in a way

that our products are standing out
and being the hero of the look

[Maya] Each MUA has been assigned
a model and outfit for the shoot...

[Kris] Cute. Okay, we got
a nice little green number

[Maya] ...as well as a mood board
for inspiration

It's vitally important
that our MUAs work off the mood board

because it's not about them,
it's about the brand's identity

I'm just gonna moisturize you in the skin
Do you mind me using my hands, my fingers?

- [model] Yeah, it's okay. Yeah
- It's okay?

[Maya] Yong-chin underperformed last week,
so the pressure's on today

It's always been,
like, a big thing of mine

- To try and get a big beauty campaign
- Mm-hmm

I have found this really, like,
beautiful, like, corally orange color...

- Nice
- ...in their kit

So it's definitely gonna be bright,
vibrant, quite light

They still want that fresh skin

- Having fun in the sun
- Exactly

If I had some advice
for our MUAs today, I would say,

"What is my model's best features?"

"Which will sell
my look more to the client?"

That's what I'd be doing

[Ryan] I'm just trying to find
a nice happy medium

that complements
the model's skin tone, um,

and doesn't look
either too dark or too bright

Just looks nice

Oh, my God

I'm just going a little bit too heavy,
and I don't want it to be heavy

[Maya] Having struggled
with time management last week,

perfectionist Sophie
is feeling the pressure

Maybe I should just do it again

'Cause it's so cakey
and it's really light

So what do you think of Sophie's look?

I'm a bit worried
because they put on a base

- And then they took it off
- Mm

And now they're putting
a little bit back on

So they just are not sure
what the right balance is

I need to hurry up because, again,
yeah, I'm struggling with the time

MUAs, you have 90 minutes left
to get your models ready and on set

[suspenseful music playing]

[Maya] With Sophie still working
on their base,

the rest of the MUAs have moved on
to the next stage of the brief,

a party-perfect eye

[dreamy electronic music plays]

Right, I'm just looking
where I need to place color

[Rachel] Okay. Close your eyes for me

[Maya] For Rachel,
this assignment is a chance to show

her passion for glam

- Hi, Rachel
- Hello

You are in your glam beauty bag today

- I am. How exciting
- Yeah. How does that feel?

I know! Finally!

Honestly, I... I'm so happy to be here

Because this is literally, like,
what I wanna do with my life

Yeah

Have you had experience
on beauty counters?

Or, like, did you go to many
when you were younger?

No, I've never had any experience
with beauty counters

[Maya] Okay

Even going there, like, to try and get
my foundation match and things like that,

it was never the best experience
because they just didn't know

what to do with my skin color

And it was, like, one default shade
for every dark-skinned woman

Yeah. It is bad, that, isn't it?
When you think about it

When I was younger as well, you'd have
like 100 for lighter skin tones

- And one for darker
- Yep

I used to use my mum's,
and my mum's white

- So that didn't go that well
- [both laugh]

I looked, like, ill,
actually, at one point

We didn't have much choice at all, did we?

No, it wasn't really poppin' for us

[funky music playing]

My first memory of putting on makeup
was from in year 11

Like, we'd booked a makeup artist,
me and my friends

And she comes along with her makeup kit

And it was very hard to cater
towards dark-skinned women

So, she was there mixing,
like, eyeshadows and Vaseline,

like, trying to make the right shade
It was just shambles. [laughs]

I would say that experience made me
want to learn more about makeup

Because, like, there had to be
other ways for me to look good

[poppy electronic music plays]

[Nancé] I've done halo eye,

whereby I've just concentrated
a lot of the shimmery colors

in, like, the middle of the lid

Nancé's going in with a purple eye color

I thought that was smart

because her outfit,
of the model, is really patterned

There's a lot of colors going on

So, sticking with one
kind of monochrome tone

was a really good idea for her
to make sure that balances well

- You all right?
- Yeah

- This looks great already
- Oh, thank you. [laughs]

Well, how are you feeling about it?

Yeah, I'm feeling really good about it

You've been top of the class
Great feedback every week

Does that add more pressure?

Um, I feel like...

um, because they've come
to expect maybe a lot from me,

if I..., you know, if I fall short of that,
I feel like I'll be judged quite harshly

Yeah, well, okay
Is this the main piece, the eyes?

Yeah, the eyes are definitely
going to be the focal point

I'm gonna have a bit of a play
because I got the brand's liners as well

So I'm trying to mix
the pink and the blue...

Oh, nice

...to make a nice purple
that matches those trousers

Then I think I'm gonna pop
some of that on there as well

Perf... Outside-the-box. Mixing eyeliners

Who the hell would've thought?

Lisa, you're impressed
with what's happening?

I've noticed she's blending
our bright liner colors

to create this new purple

[Lisa] I've spent most of my time
mixing these eyeliners

[Marjorie] The problem is,
if somebody sees it

and they want to buy that liner,
we don't have it

So, it's not hitting the brief
of really showcasing the products

that we actually have on offer

I really want the eyes to pop

[suspenseful music plays]

[Maya] While all the other MUAs
are finessing their models' eyes,

Sophie is still stuck at first base

I'm really trying to make it perfect

Mm-hmm

But it's so frust...

It's not going well

[inhales sharply]

- Good luck. [chuckles softly]
- Thank you

It's really, like, gone so cakey
around your eye again

MUAs, you have 30 minutes
to get your model ready and on set

[tense music playing]

What should we do now then? [laughs]

We're nearly done

[Maya] With the clock ticking,

most of the MUAs
are now focusing on the lips

It's not mixing as well as I wanted it to

[Maya] But Sophie is still behind

Look at that
I feel like I need to redo the eye

Why don't you hold a tissue under it
so that any powder that falls out, you...

I know, but I feel like I need
to redo the whole eye again

'Cause, look. It's not,
like, the gradient that I wanted

[Maya] And Kris is adding
the final touches to his look,

adhesive eyelashes

Got mostly everything done now

So I'm just gonna stick the lashes on
and then focus on fixing everything up

So, I'm getting there

[Rachel] I've just put glue on the lashes

To get them to apply the best,
you have to let it get a bit tacky

And then that way, when you place them
onto the eyes, they won't move

[Rachel and model laugh]

Oh, my God. It looks good

MUAs, you have ten minutes left

That's ten minutes

[spacey electronic music playing]

Just look up

MUAs, one minute left
until I need your models ready

and on set to be photographed

Just look up for me

I just want to really make it pop

[suspenseful music plays]

I love the purple and the silver
So, yeah, I'm quite confident

Time's up. Brushes down

Models, if you could please follow me,

we're gonna head down to set
to be photographed

[Maya] Time for the judges
to decide which looks were lit,

and which failed to shine

So, this is Ryan's model

What I liked about his approach

is he incorporated glow
on both face and body

Thought that was great

The highlight
on the inner corner of the eye,

it's too big

It's a shame
because I really like the skin

Skin is great

Ryan was the only one who finished early

To stop at this, to me...
That was a missed opportunity

So, this is Yong-chin's model

The eye, it's a bold color
We wanted to see bold color

But, to me, when I'm thinking
about summer party,

it's lighter, it's fresher,
it's not as intense

I'm not sure
that's gonna sell summer makeup

[Marjorie] No

[intriguing music playing]

So, this is Lisa's model

Big issue

She was mixing our liner colors together

And that's how she's created
this unique color

It doesn't hit the brief

because this is
all about selling the products

in the colors that we do have

To completely make a new product,

that is a big no-no

- I mean, you won't get booked again
- No

This is Nancé's model

This look works for our campaign

because it delivers
on a naturally glowing skin,

a bold, colorful eye that feels
like it's ready for a summer party

That's our campaign

Great job

I feel like this is
the first lip we've seen

that has a proper amount
of a natural gloss

Nancé nailed it. Boom shakalaka

- Kris, how did you find today?
- To be honest, I'm a little bit nervous

Just because the judges have commented
that I'm sometimes a bit messy,

and need to kinda work on my polish,
my finesse and stuff

This is Kris's model,

and, frankly, I'm just disappointed

The application of the eyelashes is off

[Val] You just cannot forgive
those eyelashes at all

[Marjorie] This is Rachel's model

The thing that I really love

is the model here has gorgeous freckles,

she didn't cover that up

The makeup feels fresh and light

She's ticked a lot of the boxes
we were looking for

I could see this really fitting in

with something that we would feature
as part of our campaign

What I love is the fact that...

it's pink

Pink is not an easy color to wear,

but what Rachel's done is shown exactly,

"This is how you do it
This is how you wear it."

"My model's loving it, and you will too."

She's sold it. She's sold the product

[Marjorie] This is Sophie's model

Where Sophie's come unstuck is the eye

The shape is really quite juvenile

[Val] When they were complaining,

they were making
their model feel insecure

And they were doing that,
as well, in front of me

Expressing their disappointment
with how the look is coming across,

you don't wanna hear that as a client

[tense music playing]

Now, some of you really impressed us
with your makeup looks today

[Dominic] However, others,
we were expecting more from you

The one MUA who has impressed me the most

and created an inspiring look
for our customers

that also hits the brief,

and therefore will be featured
in our global summer campaign is...

Rachel

- [gasps]
- [artists cheer]

[upbeat dance music playing]

Are you joking? [laughs]

Oh, my God. Really?

- [judges chuckle]
- Really

Oh, my God

Nancé, I do have to say, I commend you

You put up a strong fight
and delivered a bold and colorful look

- [laughs] Thank you
- Congrats as well

- Oh, my God
- [artists applaud]

So, Rachel

Get your things. Come with me
We've got to get a model ready

- [squeals] Oh, my God. It's me!
- Let's go on set and... [laughs]

[all cheer]

[driving house music plays]

Right, let's go. Go

[Rachel] This is what I was working for,

and I just didn't think
I could get that now

I'll never forget this. [laughs]

- Let's get her on set as soon as possible
- Right. Thank you

Yep

[Marjorie] Oh, nice
That's amazing. I love that

She looks so good as well
I can't believe I did that

I gotta have you do
this look on me sometime

[Rachel] Yes

Happy dance

[laughs]

[tense music plays]

[Maya] The judges must now decide

which of the seven remaining MUAs
has least impressed

and will start tomorrow
in the red Face Off chairs

I'm gonna start with Kris
And to me, it's a no-brainer

There is no way that Kris
cannot be in the Face Off chairs

[Marjorie] If that makeup came on set,

I would have to send them back
to the makeup room,

take it off, and start over

I think we need to talk about Sophie

[Marjorie] It still needs
a lot of work to get it to a place

where we'd feel really comfortable
featuring it in our campaign

We can't ignore
the lack of professionalism

that they showed on set

We have to talk about Lisa

She created a new shade
of eyeliner that we don't sell,

and it's not something we can invest in

So, I think there's a few MUAs
that are contenders

for the Face Off chair

[Maya] The next day at Glow Up studios,

the MUAs are about to find out
which of them failed to deliver...

Find your chairs

...landing themselves
in the red chairs, and first in line

for the Face Off elimination
at the end of the day

[sighs] Yes, yes, yes, yes!

Oh, my gosh. I'm not in the red chair
What's going on?

Ta-da!

I match my seat

Kris, Sophie,
you are in the Face Off chairs,

which means you'll have 15 minutes less
to start your creative brief today

Kris, your model came on set
with poorly-applied lashes

On our campaign shoot,
we'd have to send the model back

to get their makeup redone

Sophie, you complained
in front of your model and the client

that you were not happy with your look

Simply, that's just unprofessional

Lisa, you had an escape there

You created
your own unique shade of liner,

and that is just something
that we don't sell

Okay

[Dominic] For your creative brief,
we want you to produce

a bold, creative, conceptual makeup look

that tells us the story

of a pivotal moment
of change in your life

This should showcase
your skills and your story

Okay. So you ready?

- [artists] Yes!
- Bring in the models

[bold music playing]

Kris and Sophie,
I'll let you know when you can start

The rest of you
will have two and a half hours

Best of luck. Your time starts now!

Let's just get the hair out of the way

As soon as possible

I'm just gonna have a look
at how they kind of sit

[moody electronic music plays]

For my seasons of change look,

I am doing a look inspired
by my decision to leave my old job

So, um, it's gonna be demonstrated

by doing it
as a paint-by-numbers painting

So, definitely a lot of pressure

If you hold it at the front...
Do you see what I mean?

[Maya] Having survived
last week's Face Off,

Yong-chin is pinning her hopes on a look

inspired by her solo travels
in Southeast Asia

I'm gonna turn her into a statue
of, like, moss and, like, stone

And then it's also gonna have this,
like, beating hot sun on the head

So, if you just hold that over your face

[laughs]

[Maya] As the other MUAs get to work,
all Kris and Sophie can do is wait

This just feels
like a lot of vanity right now

I'm just looking at my beard, like...

- Hello, Kris
- Hey, Maya

Hiya, how are you finding red chairism?

It's fine. I mean,
I was kinda expecting it

It's not a massive surprise or anything

All right. Do you wanna
tell me about your look?

For my seasons of change,
I decided to leave my life in Dublin

And, like, go to London
and pursue doing makeup

It was just a long extended period
of just, like, working and preparation

- And just waiting
- Right

Um, during that whole time of waiting,
I kept joking to my friends, like,

"I feel like a cake
in the middle of baking."

Like, I wasn't quite ready yet,
but once it was done,

it would be this delicious treat
that was completely worth the wait

Oh, amazing

[instrumental hip-hop plays]

[Nancé] Okay, cool
I'm gonna start with my oranges

Oh, yeah, look. Look at Nancé

- [Val] Yeah. Get in there, girl
- [Dom] Going straight in with color, yes!

[Maya] Sophie is hoping
their representation of teenage rebellion

is enough to help them avoid the Face Off

What are your thoughts
about the Face Off chair sitch?

I'm gonna try and be more positive
about my stuff today

[Maya] Yeah, try

All right, well, best of luck
Your time is nearly starting

Manage the time well. Muah!

Gonna get started soon

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!

[Maya] Lisa's seasons of change look
depicts her dream career move

from elementary school teacher
to full-time makeup artist

My look today is all about my journey

to the creative world
I want to be part of

So my face literally goes from the bottom
being quite boring and, like, expected

into a more chaotic,
like, passionate art, really

Okay, Kris, Sophie. You can start now

Okay, be back in a sec

[sighs] So here's what's going
on your head. [chuckles]

[Val] What's Sophie doing there?

This is the 3D pen
So, this is like a glue gun

And what it does is
it kind of squeezes out hot plastic

[Sophie] I'm gonna be using a 3D pen
just to do, like, some flame eyeliner

So, it will be kind of, like,
sitting on the face like this

And it's just a really fun way
to add dimension to a face

Okay, I'm gonna do it good this time

[Maya] Ryan's look features
a striking central prosthetic

All this hair is going to be covered
with cotton and latex

So you're not really gonna see
the, sort of, edges

- Oh, it's going on sideways
- Oh, it's...

He's definitely dressing to the left

[scissors snipping]

- Oh, he's having the snip
- [Dominic] Oh!

[both laugh]

[gentle music playing]

[Maya] If Kris or Sophie
impress enough to beat the seat,

another MUA could find themselves
in the Face Off elimination

- Look at this already
- [Nancé] Yeah

I'm loving the colors

- Thank you
- What's your idea?

So, my look today
is really personal to me

It's about my niece

Me and my sister was going
through a really hard time when she came

So, yeah, the lines on top
is the dark times that we were in

[Maya] Okay

[Nancé] And just to remind myself that

the hard times does come,
but it does pass

So, this one is dedicated to her

[Maya] Oh, I love that. That is so nice

- No, don't
- Sorry

- This is cute. It's happiness, happiness
- I'm so sorry

- It is. It is happy things
- I'm touching you through her

Do you want a group hug?
Without messing up the makeup

We should, we should!

[mellow music plays]

When I look in a mirror,
I see somebody who has fallen 99 times

and got up 100

When I was 23, I had an ectopic pregnancy

I had to have an emergency surgery

I think maybe
that's why I've never really...

tried having kids, even though I'm 29 now

What drives me to succeed
is my family, my niece

I always say
she's the first child I've never had

She listens to me more than she listens
to her mom, by the way. [laughs]

Her mom says that Layla is just like me

She wants to be an artist
as well because of me,

and she's told me
to just be free and express yourself

Because I'm...

Oh, gosh
The tears just won't stop. [chuckles]

Can I have some tissue?

I think I'm happy with it

[suspenseful music plays]

So I'm just gonna build
around that now with latex

Now, I think it's supposed
to be an ice cream cone

that's landed on your head

I know I had the 15-minute penalty,

but I've got the base
of the prosthetic laid down

So I just need to work
on anchoring it into the hair,

so it doesn't slip,
and then I can start blending it in

So now I just kinda wanna see
what it's like on the eye

[Maya] Despite the 15-minute penalty,

Sophie is still making plastic eye pieces

So, it's gonna kind of be like that
just to make it a bit more interesting

They have been fitting that piece

and taking it off
Fitting that piece and taking it off

- When are they actually gonna stick it on?
- [Dominic] Get it on!

And that is what landed them
in the red chair after yesterday

- [both] Yeah
- They went back and forth, back and forth

[mellow guitar music playing]

Right. Now, I just need
to not waste time and just go, go, go

[Maya] Kris has been criticized
for his lack of finesse in the past

I really, really want
this one to be the one

where I'm like,
"Look, it's polished, it's finished."

It's gonna be the most beautiful cake
the judges have seen. It'll be delicious

- That's not real leaves, is it?
- No, it's not

So I, like, cut
the petal shapes out of paper

- Okay
- Then I mix liquid latex and flour,

and I just go crazy, like, sculpting
around that to make the headpiece

They're my little leaves

- Well done. That looks sick
- Oh, thank you

[Maya] After nearly an hour,

Sophie is finally applying makeup
to their teenage rebellion look

I just want it to look
like a teenager has just slapped it on

Today, I'm serving massive rebellion,
to be honest

Like, I'm going against all...

[chuckles] ...gender boundaries

Like, a lot of people see me as female

I'm actually non-binary

So, people don't really, like,
take me seriously

unless I have a beard
and I haven't done it for people today

I've done it because I want
to feel myself and true to myself

- Ryan
- Hi, Maya. You okay?

- What is happening?
- Right, don't even laugh at it

It looks a bit wrong, don't it?
It doesn't look right

Are you okay with having this
on your head right now?

What is it? Before I start laughing

- It's a horn. It's supposed to be a horn
- It's a horn

Right, so why the horn?

So, I have been a part...

Or have done work
with the anti-poaching team in Africa

- Nice
- Like, helping the rhinos

There's a massive poaching issue there,
people are taking the rhinos' horns

That makes a lot more sense
I was just looking at it thinking,

"Oh, my God. It's like a moldy stump
coming out of a head."

You know what I mean?

- Is it okay? Cool
- Yeah, it's good

[spacey electronic music plays]

One hour gone now

An hour and a half to go

- [Yong-chin] There you go
- [Rachel] Oh, it looks cute

[Val] So, now we're looking at Rachel

Stunning. Look at that skin
and that highlight on the eye

- Rachel always brings the beauty
- [Dominic] Mm

[Rachel] Just get in those ears

- Sorry
- [both chuckle]

[Kris] This look means a lot to me
This look's a very sentimental one for me

Like, I'm...
I'm glad to be pulling it out today

And if I'm going to be doing a look
in the red chair, I'm glad it's this one

Yong-chin has taken in the whole head

True. She's working on the back
of the head, which, let's face it,

we're not really gonna see

Okay, so now,
I've just begun doing the lines

And they're really... intricate

Once I get the first five,

I'll be... I'll be able
to breathe. [chuckles]

I think the focus
on the color should've remained

Right now, I'm focusing on the liner,

whether it's symmetrical
whether it's even

- [Val] Yes
- And it's distracting

So, I really hope she can clean it up

Okay, I need to add more on this side

Yeah

It's not symmetrical
It was the best makeup in the room,

and now it could be ruined

It is the difficult part now

I'm gonna freehand all of the lines

'Cause I found it actually works better

when you follow
the natural contours of the face

It's all right,
you can keep your lips normal

Putting black lines on a white base

is really gonna show every mistake

But what I do like is that Rachel
has got a very long thin brush

And that's the trick
to doing precision eyeliner work

If I go silent,
it's because I literally can't breathe

[both chuckle]

[tense music playing]

Ooh! Jeez

This brush said,
"I'm gonna mess up your look."

So, this is where you need a longer brush

That's a very short brush

The longer the brush,
the better the stroke

Exact... Ooh! [chuckles]

[Nancé] Ooh, gosh

I'm gonna have to clean that up

[upbeat electronic music plays]

Hey, hey, hey, the cake is caking

- I'm icing him now
- Yeah

Um, and then we're gonna start
on adding his strawberries and his cream

- And his... His tasty little bits
- Oh, my gosh

- This is the fun bit then, no?
- This is the fun bit, yeah

- We just gotta remember the finessey bits
- Exactly

Turn to the side for me

- Looks cool, right?
- It does

Two hours gone. Half an hour left

[gentle music playing]

I'm getting a bit nervy about time

This is the chains to represent
feeling trapped as a teenager

[Dominic] If Sophie can keep
working on that chain,

I think it could look really great

But my worry is,
is that take the chain away,

there's very little else going on

Fifteen minutes remaining now

[dreamy music playing]

I think the chain might be taking away
from the face too much

So, I think I might, um...

Yeah, I think...

- [laughs]
- I'm gonna be sick

I... The chain was working

I'm gonna put it back on
I think that was a mistake

Final five minutes!

[cheerful ethereal music plays]

[Rachel] Oh, the concentration right now
I can't even...

Hopefully, this isn't, like, orangey
I need it... Ah! It's orange

- Do I just shove something else on?
- [chuckles]

I don't know why
in the last minute my hand is shaky

Okay. Time's up! Brushes down

We got there. [sighs]

Please take your models next door
to be photographed

[groovy percussive music playing]

Lisa, please come forward

[gentle melancholic music playing]

[Lisa] My seasons of change look

is based on the journey
that I'm on right now

The bottom of the face represents

a more safe, traditional,
kind of expected route that I was on

And then as we sort of journey
up the face,

it's me trying to transition into this,
like, passionate, chaotic world of makeup

[Dominic] I really love the way
you've applied that paint

The transition, though,
between the top and the bottom,

it's too extreme

When it comes to the top part, it almost
felt like maybe you ran out of time

I would've loved
to have seen more of that color

really just explode
upwards off those petals

But, overall, it's an impactful look

Thank you. [laughs]

[all applaud]

Kris, please step forward

[gentle music plays]

[Kris] My season of change
began when I made the decision

to move to London to pursue makeup

And during that whole time, I felt
like a cake in the process of baking

Wasn't quite done yet,
but when it was done,

it would be this delicious,
sweet treat that was worth the wait

Great story

And from the moment
that you got that prosthetic...

- It's homemade, right? Yeah, yeah
- Yeah

...you got that prosthetic
and you just stuck it on the side,

I was like, "What?"

For me, yes, it's gorgeous

- Let them eat cake
- [chuckles]

I am so impressed with this,
which is... a real relief

- Because, I tell you, after yesterday...
- [Kris laughs]

I genuinely questioned
what you were doing here

- [chuckles]
- That cheek is gorgeous

I love the little thing on the nose

I mean, you've given me a lip

And I love it

- Thank you, thank you
- [artists applaud]

Yong-chin, please come forward

[gentle melancholic music continues]

[Yong-chin] My story for seasons of change

was based around when I first went
solo traveling to Indonesia

So, this look was to pay homage

to the ancient temples
where they were built to worship the sun

[Marjorie] For some reason, I'm not seeing

what you were hoping
to achieve with the color

Okay

When I think about your work,
I do see an incredible artist

And right at this moment in time,
I'm a bit disappointed

I don't think
you've pulled it off this week

- [Dominic] Thank you
- [all applaud]

Sophie

Please step forward

[moody music playing]

My seasons of change
is going from that massive change

when you're a kid to a teenager

That was the biggest thing
I've ever experienced in terms of change

I mean, I see teenage going on here

It really does just scream it

But again, each week with you,
Sophie, you over-accessorize...

[Sophie] Mm-hmm

...with too many points
that you're trying to make

And that's where the story gets lost

Let's have a look
at the chain on the neck

You've created three-dimensionality,
and actually that, all over the face,

to talk about how you're breaking out
of these chains of being a child

into being a teenager,
to express yourself

That, simple, tells a story

- Okay?
- Mm-hmm

When I watched you work,

I noticed that you just were hesitating
when it came to some of the decisions

You're incredibly talented

Just confidence in your decisions
is the only thing that I see missing

[Sophie] Thank you

[all applaud]

Rachel, please come forward

[dreamy music playing]

[Rachel] What you can see here
is the artistry that I came in with,

which is obviously glam makeup

And there's still, like, a blank canvas,
which is waiting to be filled

And I feel like
the steps are there for me to follow

to be a well-rounded makeup artist

[Dominic] Oh, I love that

What you've done is you've created
some really beautiful line work

There is great consistency with that line

The problem kind of comes in

with the actual finesse of that line

You can see the bumpiness

I would've loved to see tiny finesse

Like this little lip here

[Rachel] Yeah. Mm-hmm

Those things can be worked on
Overall, I love what you've delivered

Thank you so much

You've executed an incredible look

But I want you to stand back
and look at the whole picture

Because your glam could've been better

That's what you're known for

It's a bit wibble on the wobble
right there in the corner

I'm just pointing out all the things
that would've made it ding-dongable

Oh! So close

[Dominic laughs]

- Keep going, keep going. Thank you
- [Rachel] Thank you so much

- [all applaud]
- Good job

Ryan, can you please step up?

[cheerful percussive music plays]

[Ryan] My seasons of change
is about the anti-poaching, uh, team

that I was involved with in South Africa

I wanted to show the story
through moss growing up

I wanted to use texture
and, um, a grayscale

to kind of show that
and depict that journey

I think you've done
some really beautiful textural work

I love that moss you've integrated

It feels really 3D and really dimensional

- Thank you
- Yeah

Looking at the overall makeup,

it just looks fabulous

It's texture, it's sculptural

Overall, I think you've done...

you've done a brilliant job

Thank you. Ta

- [all applaud]
- [Ryan chuckles]

Nancé, please come forward

[ethereal music playing]

[Nancé] My inspiration behind the look

is when I was going
through a really hard time

My dad had passed away,
so there was a lot of grief

and pain and anxiety I was going through

And then my niece was born

She brought a lot of happiness,
growth, and joy into my life

So the colors that you can see under
is what she represents to me

And the lines is just
the illusion that darkness,

sometimes it comes to teach us lessons,

but they do go away,
and the sun does shine

Beautiful story

You were the first one
in the room to get color on

And, boy, did you get that color on

And then when you put
the three black lines on the nose,

I was like, "What the...?"

- Oh
- I didn't need the black

Top tip

If you're not very good
at doing symmetry...

- [Nancé] Mm-hmm
- ...then don't do symmetry

Do a lovely, like, wiggly,
"Ooh, we weren't meant to be symmetrical."

I'm trying to impress you

Oh, baby, you're already impressing me

- [Nancé] Okay
- Great

- Well done
- Thank you so much

[sighs] This has me emotional

- [laughs]
- Oh, God

I love it

I really, really love it

I think, hearing your story...

Wow, sorry. Wow. [chuckles]

Sorry

- [Dominic chuckles]
- [sighs]

- Yeah. Wow. Okay. I'm done
- [all laugh]

[breathes deeply]

Um, this is...

the power of makeup to tell a story

[softly] Thank you

And I think you've just done
an exquisite job with color

[softly] Thank you

This is inspired by your niece

And I know when she sees it,
she's gonna be so proud

- So, well done
- [sobs] Thank you

- Thank you so much
- Thank you

- Thank you so much
- [Dominic] Thank you. Well done

- [all applaud]
- [cheering]

MUAs, thank you very much
If you'd like to go next door,

myself, Val, and Marjorie
will be discussing

which two will be going
into the Face Off elimination

[Yong-chin] Mine's was, like, the worst

Let's start with the artists

that started off the day
in the Face Off chairs

Let's talk about Kris

[suspenseful music plays]

[Val] I think he did exceptionally well

I think it's an original idea
It's creative

To me, he's beat the seat

The other MUA that started today
in the Face Off chairs was Sophie

It's a cool grungy makeup

But is it enough
halfway through the competition?

[Dominic] Mm

We've all done really well,
so it could be any of us

- And that's scary
- [Maya] Right

If we've got a seat to fill,
I'd like to talk about Yong-chin

This makeup is too flat,

and I can't see the story

I think the texture that she wanted
to achieve, we've lost it

I want to talk about Ryan

There's nothing bringing the neck
and the forehead together

That gray is a completely different story

- If that's a horn, which apparently it is...
- [Dominic chuckles]

...it should've been centered,
and I see tree trunk

[tense music playing]

- Hi, judges
- Hello

- Have you made your decision?
- We have

As you know, in this industry,
you're only as good as your last look

Which is why when we make this decision,
we base it purely on the creative brief

[Val] So, Sophie and Kris,

you started off today
in the Face Off chairs

Sophie

There is no denying you are talented
and you've got a lot of great ideas

Those ideas get lost in the execution
and it becomes over-complicated

So, you'll be the first MUA
going into the Face Off elimination

[Val] Kris

You've shown us that you're listening

We can see your progress

You delivered an original idea

Kris, you've beaten the seat

- [all applaud]
- Congratulations

[Kris flaps lips]

[chuckles]

[sighs]

So this means we got a seat to fill

This MUA is exceptionally talented,

and their use of color
and texture is incredible

But today, it just fell flat,

and there was very much a lack of story

So the next MUA joining Sophie
into the Face Off elimination...

will be Yong-chin

- [Maya] Okay. Thank you, judges
- [Dominic] Thank you

[Maya clears throat]

All right, Sophie, Yong-chin

Please say your goodbyes
as one of you won't be returning

[Yong-chin sighs] I know, I know

[Rachel] You got this

[tense music plays]

[Maya] To level the playing field,

the MUAs will face off
over a set of identical twins

For your Face Off elimination this week,
we want you to create

a powder matte red lip

To create the perfect powder matte lip,

start by taking your lip pencil
and draw around the edge of your lip,

ensuring you get
a nice, clean, sharp edge

Follow this by filling in the lip
with a matte lip color

Dust a little loose powder on the chin
to help catch any fallout

Then take a small fluffy brush

and slowly press
the red pigment onto the lipstick,

starting in the center of the lip,
working your way out to the outer edge

Sweep away the loose powder
and any pigment fallout,

leaving you
with the perfect powder matte lip

We want to see an even application

with crisp, sharp edges

and a lip that is symmetrical
and well-balanced,

with a texture
that resembles a rose petal

You have 15 minutes to complete your look

Best of luck to both of you

Your time starts now

[suspenseful music playing]

[Val] Yong-chin, she's done her lip

- [Dominic] Yeah
- She's got that pigment on

- Yeah
- And it's looking pretty good

Yong-chin did go in really quickly

But I have to give
a lot of praise to Sophie

because they've been very thorough

They have worked that lip pencil
to get that shape

It's neck and neck, I think

One has gone straight in,

but the other is taking their time

Yeah, I think it is neck and neck

Three minutes remaining now

[suspenseful percussive music plays]

Five, four, three, two, one

[gentle music playing]

Are you ready for a conflab?

- I think so
- Let's go

[Sophie] Weird feeling

[Dominic] Wow

[Val] Well, I wasn't expecting it to be

quite as tight a finish as it is

When I look at Sophie's,

their lip shape is good

It's good

- It's not perfect at the cupid's bow
- Mm

But what I want to know is,
where's the rose petal?

[Dominic] know

- Yong-chin got her lip on really quickly
- Yeah

But sometimes, that can be a problem

Because, in my opinion,

Yong-chin didn't put enough powder
around the outside of her lip

So when she went to dust the...
the fallout away,

it created a red mark

Yeah

Sophie created
a really beautiful, even application

Yes

Yong-chin achieved
a great matte powder finish

Yes

[tense music plays]

- Have you made your decision?
- [both] We have

We asked for a powder matte red lip

that has the texture of a rose petal
and clean sharp edges

Yong-chin, you got
your color on straightaway,

and you delivered a matte rose petal lip

Sophie, you were really methodical

and created a full lip and even color

Unfortunately, you didn't achieve
a rose petal finish

So for that reason only,

it's time to pack up your kit,
and you'll be leaving us today

[softly] Oh, babe

[sad music plays]

[Sophie] It's been so good

To get this far out of the whole UK
is pretty spesh. [laughs]

Obviously, I'm feeling emotional
Like, I really wanted to get further,

but it's just such strong competition

I feel like I've grown
as a person as well

Like, I'm still an alien
I still don't really fit in

I'm still a bit of a weirdo
But, like, yeah. [laughs]

- [driving electronic music plays]
- [artists cheering]

- [Yong-chin laughs]
- [Ryan] Mum's here!

[all laugh]

[Yong-chin] That Face Off,
it was so close

But, um, I'm really happy to have
this opportunity to still be here, yeah

I need to stop being in that Face Off
I don't want to make it a trend

So, um, hopefully,
that's my last time. [chuckles]

- [laughing]
- Well done, everybody

You've survived another week
You can get some rest

We've had a fantastic week of makeup

Haven't we just? We have seen
all types of beauty makeup

And you know what they say, Val
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

Hmm! I'll be the judge of that

[groovy percussive music playing]
