Glow Up: Britain's Next Make-Up Star (2019–…): Season 4, Episode 3 - Episode #4.3 - full transcript

The MUAs try their hand at special effects, creating alien characters for Doctor Who, based around the Doctor's recent nemeses Swarm and Azure. The Creative Brief asks them to create a character from an experiment gone wrong.

[Maya Jama] It's time to Glow Up

[energy pulsing]

Where am I?

Is this even planet Earth?

Where's the MUAs?

- [cell phone chimes]
- Ooh!

Got a message

Oh, it's Maya. Oh, look at that

Are you ready?

Okay

MUAs, I need your help
I've woken up on another planet,

and it's full
of scary, futuristic creatures

Yas!

Find the Doctor...

[all scream]

Oh, my God!

...and come and save me
before I get exfoliated

[laughing]

- Oh, my God!
- That's so tight

- Are you joking?
- That is mad

[Maya] One of the world's
longest-running TV shows, Doctor Who,

first hit our screens back in 1963

The use of special effects makeup
is a key part of the show's success

My sister

[Maya] And with a worldwide audience
of 110 million,

the series has become a global phenomenon

This is gonna be fun

[all chatter excitedly]

[Lisa] Here we go

[moody music plays]

The eight remaining MUAs
will be taking their first steps

into the weird and wonderful world
of Doctor Who for Prosthetics Week,

learning to create
looks fit for a Time Lord

- [Rachel] Oh!
- [Kris] Oh, my God

Morning, MUAs

[all] Morning

So, you have been booked to create a look

inspired by the iconic television series,

Doctor Who!

[all cheer]

It's my pleasure to introduce to you

the prosthetics designer
for the latest series,

Danny Marie Elias

[all applaud]

[Maya] Danny Marie is responsible

for some of the most memorable
on-screen makeup of recent years

If the MUAs impress her today,

they stand the chance of assisting her
on future prosthetics projects

Today, I'd like you to create
a new alien character

inspired by existing creatures
I designed for the latest series

[artists] Ooh!

You may be wondering
where Val and Dom are

They're currently busy
traveling through time and space

But they have left you a message

- [hydraulics hissing]
- [artists exclaim excitedly]

[laughing]

Your alien character must look authentic

The prosthetics must have
a flawless application

Coloring is vitally important
to bring your alien character to life

So, we're expecting you
to use a variety of colors

on both the skin and the prosthetics

Push yourselves
and produce something extraordinary

[artists applaud]

The winning makeup artist
that creates the most authentic look

will have the opportunity
to work with me again

- [gasps]
- [all cheer]

[moody instrumental hip-hop plays]

Whoo! It's Doctor Who. Whoo!

I love it. I can't wait

[Maya] To help the MUAs
hit the ground running,

Danny Marie gives them
an SFX master class

You will all be applying
one half-face appliance

[Maya] The MUAs have also been given
a smaller crystal prosthetic

It is completely up to you
where you put this piece

[Maya] But if their application
is less than perfect...

[Danny Marie] It's all about making sure

that every part of this has contact

[Maya] ...just like their prosthetics,
they could quickly come unstuck

[Danny Marie] That's how detailed
you need to be

in terms of where you're putting adhesive

[Maya] After seamlessly blending
their edges...

[Danny Marie] Minimum contact is a tap

[Maya] ...they must tackle
the crucial second stage

Coloring in this challenge
is just as important as the prosthetics,

and they shouldn't underestimate that

[Maya] But first, they must lay down
a special base paint

to help the color stick

[Danny Marie] Start to build dimension

[Maya] The finished look
must stand up to 12 hours on set

and be a believable character
from the Doctor Who universe

This is a lot more than I thought

- [laughing]
- Yeah. It's a lot, isn't it?

- [all] Yeah!
- [Danny Marie] Good luck, everyone

You'll have two and a half hours
to complete your look

[door hisses]

[artists cheer]

No time to waste. Off you go!

- [cheering]
- Good luck!

[Rachel] Oh, my God

I'm actually super excited, right,

because it's prosthetics,
which I'm studying at uni

That is where I want to end up

Hi

[Sophie] I feel I picked up
a lot in the demo

It's just gonna be hard
to keep it in my brain

because I'm dyslexic

and it kind of, like just fizzles out

I'm just gonna try and not get flustered
and take it step by step

[Maya] With just two and a half hours
to complete the look,

each MUA has been assigned an actor,

pre-colored prosthetic pieces,

and a character description

"Your alien is grown from an opal core."

"Prepare for battle."

"Their power grows, exposing more
and more of their crystal formations."

"Be creative with your positioning
for maximum impact."

Prosthetics Week
is always a big challenge

Some of our MUAs have experience

How do you feel
about being turned into an alien today?

[Dominic] Other MUAs
just haven't even touched it

This is quite a lot to deal with

[Sophie] My biggest thing today
is to not get flustered,

'cause I always get a bit flustered

[laughs nervously]

Cleaning an alien mask
in a space bar is, like...

[laughs] ...really cool
I feel right at home, to be honest

[upbeat music plays]

Going through school,

I was always drawing fairies,
always drawing pixies

So, it was really exciting
to experiment with makeup

because I felt like I had started becoming
the creatures that I'd been drawing

If I wear, like, pixie ears
and have these, like, horns in my hair...

[laughs] ...it just, like,
makes me a little less human

There's so much restriction
within being a human

And you have to fit in
to be part of society

I think it's really nice
to, like, step out of that

School for me was very difficult
I'm dyslexic and dyspraxic

I've always struggled with, like, words
and train of thoughts and stuff

I'm also very much a perfectionist

I actually quite like
being dyslexic and dyspraxic

If I know exactly what I'm doing,
I can just focus on that

So, it kind of works for me

Let's try that one on

[Maya] Before the MUAs
can lay down their large prosthetic,

they must make sure
their positioning is on point

- Does that feel lined up with your nose?
- [model] No, you've blocked it

[Kris] It's blocked, is it?

Can you breathe through your nose?

- No
- [chuckling] Okay

I need to stop panicking
and trust my style

[Maya] Rookie MUA Mikaél
won last week's assignment,

but has almost no experience
with prosthetics

[Mikaél] Gonna make you look
like a pretty alien,

but scary at the same time

- The nose is a bit wonky
- [model laughs]

[Rachel] I'm still just trying
to do the nostrils

When Danny was showing us earlier,
I swear she did it in about two seconds

[Maya] Glam-loving Rachel is also
a newcomer to the world of SFX

I'm very nervous
because it is definitely not my forte

I guess if I can do this,
I can do anything

Okay. Can you breathe out of there?

- Yeah
- [chuckles] Yeah

[Maya] Someone who's no stranger
to the world of special effects makeup

is Ryan

[glamorous house music plays]

So, I come from Bolton,
which is a very small town

Very laddie, very rugby

You don't really be creative
and do makeup

People didn't really understand it,
didn't get it

Like, "Why do you wanna do makeup?"

But at the same time, I had
this really eccentric side of my family,

where my dad was
a, uh, DJ back in the day,

my granddad was
a Rod Stewart impersonator,

my uncle was an Elvis impersonator

So, on the side, really,

they were all really camp
and creative and artistic

I feel like makeup
helped me come into myself

It helped me kind of...
kind of discover who I am as well

My dream would be to be
the head makeup designer

of a big fantasy film

I want to create things out of my mind

So, I just wanna prove to them now,
just because I'm from a small town

doesn't mean I can't do big things

Can you hold that piece
for me there just for one second?

Just press onto it there. Thank you

[funky house music playing]

[Maya] With almost an hour gone,

the MUAs are still working
on their first piece

[Nancé] I think I can do this
I believe in myself

This is such a positive corner right here

It is

[Sophie] Why does it look so lopsided?

[Mikaél] We're gonna take the edge off

Is anybody worrying you at this stage?

- Mikaél
- Okay

Um, his position is completely off

But he's moved on from it

So, he's ignored the fact
that everything is slightly out of place

Oh, my God

He's got a lot of work
to do now to pull this back

Okay, makeup artists

I'm gonna need your actors
in one and a half hours

Oh! Sorry

[Maya] With just 90 minutes left to attach
the remaining prosthetics and apply color,

the pressure is on for the MUAs

[Nancé] Just melting the edges

[humming]

[Sophie] I'm very behind
because I'm such a perfectionist

I'm not the quickest

It's crazy. I've never done
such a big piece like this

So, yeah, I'm very worried

[Maya] With Sophie stuck
on their first piece,

some of the MUAs
are starting their crystal prosthetics

I need to get a move on now

There's a nice curve here that...
I think it fits in really nicely

So, I'm gonna pop it there

[Maya] But it's up to them
where to place it

It looks like a Mohican
It looks like a Mohican. That looks cool

I'm working as fast as I can

- [Rachel] You've done that so quick
- [Mikaél] Girl, I just went straight in

I am still gluing down that first piece

- Girl, you better hurry up, girl
- I know, I know

Now that everything is on,
we are gonna add some colors

- What?
- Girl, I'm painting

[funky music playing]

[Maya] With her prosthetic safely applied,

Yong-chin is taking a gamble
by adding her own touch

I'm just getting the liquid latex
and have these, like, craters

So, I'm just doing one on the forehead

just to give it
one last, like, 3D element

[tense music plays]

Okay, makeup artists
You have one hour left

[Rachel] Oh, my God

[Danny Marie] So, if you haven't already,

you should be thinking about coloring now

Are you joking?

I haven't even got my first prosthetic on

I'm really, really worried about Sophie

All the information is there
and I think all the skill is there

I just don't think
they believe that it is

[sighs]

Deep breaths

[Maya] Whilst Sophie keeps wrangling
their first prosthetic,

the rest of the MUAs
have moved on to color

I'm just covering
the whole base in this PAX paint

[Mikaél] Oh, my goodness. Patchy

Mikaél's got some paint on now
Has he saved it?

[Danny Marie] No, he's foregone
his base PAX layer on the bald cap

So, any movement
or any rubbing of the head

is just gonna remove
that color completely,

no matter how much he powders it

On set, you don't think
that makeup would last?

It's not going to have cut it
for set, unfortunately

That green is hideous

But we're gonna make it work

[Maya] While Sophie falls further behind...

[Sophie] This is such an impossible part

[model] I got runny nose

- [Lisa laughs]
- [Maya] ...the other MUAs steam ahead

Turbo Kris. Need some more purple

[laughing] My hand is aching
from doing that so fast

- Sorry I'm so short
- [both chuckle]

[Maya] How's Nancé getting on?

So, everybody else has chosen
typical places to apply their third piece

Nancé's done something different

She's actually chosen a position
that I really wanted someone to choose

So she's chosen to add it to the jawline,
which is gonna change the look completely

[energetic electronic music plays]

- [Sophie] Is everyone else painting?
- [Kris humming nervously]

[Ryan] I'm gonna go all out

I'm working as quick as my little fingers
will let me right now

Add more glitter

More is more!

I need wax and paint on, any paint

I just need to get something on,
'cause it can't be bare

Ten minutes!

- [whimpers]
- Oh, my goodness me

Yes, this is very stressful

It's so unfinished

[bold electronic music plays]

Get it on!

Yeah. My, like, mohawk,
gothic motorcyclist alien

is taking shape

I'm not 100% on it
It's a bit messy, but...

To be fair, though,
you have just stuck on two prosthetics

Give yourself a bit of credit

Oh, wow. Look

[Mikaél] It's going to the club

[Rachel] Star-studded

[Sophie] But I had
real big plans for this

I'm a bit embarrassed
I just ran out of time for the paint job

Ooh, I like that. I like that a lot
I would say I've not done terribly

- I'm scared of my own reflection
- [laughs]

Makeup artists, that's time

[sighs heavily]

Brushes down, everybody

Danny Marie now needs your models

[spacey music plays]

[exhales]

[Sophie] This assignment
was right up my street,

and I'm really lucky
that I got the chance to do it

But I'm not sure
what the judges will say, to be honest

So, I'm kind of dreading that

[both mimic explosion]

- See ya. Bye
- See ya later

- Good luck
- Thank you

Phew!

[intriguing music plays]

[Maya] With the actors'
transformation complete...

Okay. So, we have
Mikaél and Rachel's actors

Wowzers

[Maya] ...the judges will be looking
for the perfect prosthetic application,

creative color work, and a character
whose face fits the Doctor Who universe

[Danny Marie] So, to start with Mikaél

[suspenseful music playing]

When Mikaél was applying,
the placement was off

So, to cover that,
he's used a lot of adornments,

but I think it's just too much going on

[Val] Absolutely. I mean,
I really like the mohawk,

but I keep being drawn to that chin

It's not symmetrical

Okay. Shall we look at Rachel's actor?

There's clearly some technical errors

The choice of placement of the neck piece
shortened the whole face

I just wish she'd turned it

so it was coming downwards
and it would've lengthened the whole look

But I actually think
the color on this is really nice

Can we see Yong-chin
and Ryan's actors, please?

Shall we start with Yong-chin's actor?

The application is very well done

And the positionings are great

However, I'm disappointed
with the coloring

I think it lacks in shape

I can see drips of color

That's not what we wanna see

If you turn to the side for us

We went back
to latex to create this shape,

which is completely unnecessary

She spent a little too long
adding these additional things

when she could've
really enhanced that paintwork

and got some shape in there

Okay. So, this is Ryan's actor

I think he's really capitalized
on the color

The purple, the reds, the blues

He's used the entire color palette

I just think it's incredible
It looks so real

[Danny Marie] This character reads
as if he belongs in our world

So, it's a great job

[Val] Absolutely

So, next, we've got
Kris and Lisa's actors

Let's start with Kris's

The edges went down well

He sealed them all correctly

But the positioning is off

He did stretch the piece
a little bit too much

I think that he selected the right colors

I would just like
to have seen more transition

between that silicon piece,
because I can see the outline

It's just stuck on, which is a shame

[Danny Marie] Yeah

Okay. So, this is Lisa's actor

Technically, that lower line there,
it's slightly too high

It needs to come down
and rest on that upper lip

But I can feel the color move in

I really love this

Lisa has really gotten down the character

Bang

And we now have Sophie and Nancé's actors

So, we'll start with Sophie's

There's skill there

The application is good

The problem is,
Sophie didn't believe that

And I think
that really, really got in the way

of them doing a great job here

This is the first makeup
that I would say is incomplete

[Danny Marie] Yeah. 100%

So, this is Nancé's actor

So, I really like
the orange and red tones

What jars for me
is the fact that the color stops

at the line of the prosthetics,
so it completely draws your attention

to where the appliance is,
even though it was applied well

How do you feel
about prosthetic on the chin?

I was praying somebody was gonna do this

because we don't have anything
on the lower half of the face

It always feels to me
like it needs an extra bit

So many good ideas

It just needs a little development

Very difficult assignment today

Is anybody feeling super confident
about how it went?

- [all laugh]
- [Maya] Not one? Not one of you?

So, Danny, we need to know

which of our MUAs
have impressed you here today,

and who is going into the Face Off chairs

Quite a lot of them impressed me,

just with their determination
and their will and bravery

to do something like this
And it is a hard job

I do think, however, there's quite
a few people that might be at the bottom

Mikaél didn't hit the technical marks

He didn't hit the color marks

He's sort of added these adornments
to hide things rather than enhance things

When I look at Yong-chin's actor,

I see running paint

- [Dominic] Yeah
- That's not a good look

The application was so good

But because
of the different products she's used,

and the... just the overall finish of it,

it's one I think I would struggle to save

Sophie started off so, so well

And then slowly, slowly,
I could see the doubt,

purely through lack of confidence, maybe

Today was really difficult

because I've never done
such a massive professional piece

[energy pulses]

[moody music playing]

[artists cheering and laughing]

[Sophie vocalizes]

[Maya] At Glow Up studios,

the MUAs are about to find out

whose alien creations
have landed them in the Face Off chairs

[suspenseful music plays]

If an MUA's name is
on one of the two red chairs...

- Survived
- [brooch rattles]

[Maya] ...they're headed for the Face Off
elimination at the end of the day

Yay! It's blue. [sighs] It's blue

Oh, it's me

Okay

Yong-chin, Mikaél, as you can see,
your names are on the red chairs,

which means you'll have
15 minutes less than everybody else

to complete your look today

[Danny Marie] Mikaél, you missed
some vital steps yesterday

One of those was the lack
of a base paint on your vinyl cap,

which meant that the makeup
would not have lasted on set,

which is an absolute no-no

Yong-chin,

I have to commend you on the application,

but you spent far too long on that circle

when you could've concentrated
on your paintwork

Okay

So, there was one makeup artist
whose work really stood out

And I can see them
working well with me on set

And that makeup artist is...

Ryan

- [gasps]
- [all cheer]

- [Rachel] Oh, my God!
- [laughs]

[upbeat music plays]

[Maya] By winning
today's professional assignment,

Ryan has won the opportunity

to assist Danny Marie
on future prosthetic projects

I can't even speak

[artists chuckle]

Yesterday, you entered
the world of special effects

Today, for your creative brief,

we're gonna keep you
in the realm of science fiction

We want you to create
a monstrous mutation character

from a science experiment
that's gone terribly wrong

Your look today must include

a minimum of two prosthetic pieces

Remember placement,
application, and blending

MUAs, you'll have two and a half hours

to complete your scary monster creation

Are you ready?

[all] Yes!

Bring in the models!

[driving electronic music playing]

- Hi. How's it going?
- Hi!

Jump on, yeah?

Yong-chin and Mikaél,
you'll have 15 minutes less,

so I'll let you know when you can start

- The rest of you, your time starts now
- [claps]

[fast-paced music plays]

- [Lisa] No, no!
- [Kris] Pfft! Oh, my God

- [Lisa] Wait. No!
- [Sophie] My God. This is chaos

[Maya] The MUAs have been allowed
to prepare for today's creative brief

Oh, my God. You're gonna be a rat
Let's get started

Oh, I can't actually believe I've won

So, my look today is going to be
this kind of toxic waste rat,

this kind of human and rat hybrid
in this weird dystopian future

We've got this, we've got this

[Maya] For Mikaél and Yong-chin
to beat the seat,

they'll need to wow the judges
with their ambitious looks

Hello

Hiya

This is your first time
in the Face Off chair

- Yes
- You all right?

- Yeah, I'm good
- Tell me about this look

[Mikaél] I'm blending a DNA
between human and flowers,

but it came out poisonous
with veins and everything

Do you feel you're gonna have
enough time today?

The most important part is
just applying the prosthetic really well

And after I've done that,
everything else is gonna come together

Natural

Also inspired by deadly plants is Sophie

[Sophie] My look is based
on a post-apocalyptic world

in which the scientists mix
carnivorous plants with human DNA

She's kind of like a zombie,
but, like, still got a human brain

It's actually so exciting

Hopefully, I'll be able
to work a lot faster today

Um, 'cause I know what I'm doing

- I forgot you can't reply
- [model laughs]

- Can you breathe? Can you breathe?
- [laughs]

- Yeah, I can breathe
- Okay

Another day, another bald cap

- Hello, lovely
- Hiya

This is your first time
in the Face Off chair

It is! I know

- Was it expected?
- Yeah

- I was a bit all over the place
- Tell me about your look

[Yong-chin] My idea is based around people

who are playing with, like, dark magic,
mixing with, like, these devils

and sinister creatures
to the point they become one of them

There's gonna be horns
and I'm gonna wrap them in human hair

- [Maya] Big look
- Yeah

- Best of luck. I'll see you in a bit
- Thank you

I think the 15 minutes
is almost up, surely

Yong-chin, Mikaél, you can start now

[claps] Let's do this
Let me go grab everything

Fifteen minutes gone,
and I haven't done anything

[chuckles nervously]

[upbeat music plays]

So much stuff. [laughs]

[Maya] Lisa's monstrous mutation
depicts a human

who's been injected with reptilian DNA...

A bit stressed about time
because I've got four prosthetics

that I would like to put on

And I don't wanna run
out of time for the coloring

[Maya] ...while pharmaceutical grad
Rachel's look

is more science fact than fiction

My look is based
on human spaghettification

What on earth is human spaghettification?

It's basically what happens
if you fall into a black hole

So, the spaghettification process
is basically where you're stretched out

into, like, spaghetti

I know you love science,
but I just felt it right there

[Rachel] I absolutely am a science geek

My life is complete polar opposites
because during the day,

I work for a COVID vaccine company

with doctors from all over the world

And then, like,
as soon as I'm done with work,

I'm, like, shutting my laptop,
and the next minute,

just... [sings] "La-di-da-di-da"
in the mirror doing makeup

I'll just say it's an alter ego

I pick things up like that

And I think that comes
from my science background

You could literally put
anything in front of me,

and I am gonna nail it

[laughs]

When I'm doing makeup,

I just feel like I'm in my element

Some people meditate. I do makeup

That's what I do

Did you know you could get
stretched out like spaghetti?

- Mm-mmm
- No. This is crazy stuff

[glitchy music plays]

No. Turn that one round

[Val] Ooh, yes

Why are ears tricky?

Everybody has a distinctive ear shape

Noses and ears are notoriously difficult
for generic pieces

This one has not dried properly

I wanna beat the seat. I'm not ready
to leave the competition yet

Forty-five minutes have gone!

Time is speeding

Still feeling okay?

- Yeah. All good
- Okay

[bold instrumental hip-hop plays]

- I'm sorry
- Sorry

[Yong-chin and model laughing]

[Rachel sighs] One side done. [laughs]

- Nancé, what is going on?
- So, my concept is skin bleaching

Okay

So, this skin is basically
the bleached skin,

and her skin at the bottom
is the normal skin

I thought about societal beauty standards

and how a lot of Black and brown people

feel the pressure to lighten
their skin to fit into that mold

[Maya] Right

Sometimes it can look
like an experiment gone wrong

- It's a big story, but an important one
- Yeah

Look in the mirror anytime

- And say, "I am powerful."
- I'm powerful

[both] "I'm supposed to be here."

[both] "And I am great."

[both] "Yeah!"

- [Maya] There we are. I love that
- Love it too

Ooh, Ryan! Look at them eyes

Oh, it's so creepy

[Maya] To deliver her look,

Yong-chin has created
her own prosthetic pieces

[Yong-chin] The horns, I made out of wire,

masking tape, latex,
and cotton put over it

I'd have been tempted
to drag it backwards

It would pull the focus all the way back
and extend the makeup,

rather than condense it
into such a small area

[Maya] Kris is also using
homemade prosthetics

to create his human-cyborg mutation

We've got gills going over the mouth
to cover the mouth,

then we got a couple other tubes
coming around the face

- A lot of things to stick on, isn't there?
- Sure is

[Maya] Also hoping to impress
the judges with perfect prosthetics

is SFX novice Rachel

I hope the judges can see
that I'm trying to push myself

and use different methods

[Val] Rachel has gotten down three pieces

Bish-bash-bosh

[pulsing music plays]

[Maya] Prosthetic ears in place,

fellow beauty fan Mikaél
has moved on to paint

[giggles] Oh, my God

He is going to really struggle
to work around that water-based paint

The blackest black you will find

An hour and a half to go

Whoo!

Tilt your head back for me

I'm so jealous of everyone
that can see right now. [chuckles]

[Danny Marie] The fact
that she's wound hair around it,

it's taken away all opportunity
for her now to show

that she can transition
from one surface to another with color

[Val] At the moment,

it looks like a hairy woolly mammoth

having an eye bath

[mellow music playing]

I have to say, I'm worried about Sophie

Get it off. Just get it off

It looks like they've only just finished
that third prosthetic

There's not a lot of time left
to get the coloring on

- [Val] Yeah. Sophie needs to focus
- [Dominic] Oh, we got paint going on

One hour remaining!

[dreamy electronic music plays]

[exclaims]

- Everyone just looks weird
- [Ryan] Yeah, they do

I'm trying to get
a lot of red into the real crevices

to make it look like this skin condition
that's really sore

What color is this?

It's a kind of off-white

- [model] Mm
- I can't. [laughs]

I really feel that Kris
is focusing on the finesse

Where's that pipe going to?

Wow! Look at Sophie

- I mean, where's that come from?
- [Dominic] Where has it come from?

[Val] They've suddenly woke up
and smelled the coffee

I think I need to add some more of this

I'm just going in with the watercolors
just to, like, really create my veins

I want the skin to look like an earthworm

Like a decaying earthworm, I guess

Ooh! Look at this
Where has all this hair come from?

I'm seeing a complete character

[Dominic] And now we got
a prosthetic tooth

[Danny Marie] That's clever

Can you speak? Talk. Say hello

- Hello
- [Ryan] Yeah, you can

Oh, my God. What on earth
is happening over there?

[Dominic] This is so clever. Nancé has put
this sort of rubber mask over the face

and cut it into these strips

And then has stuck more prosthetics
on top, on the cheekbones,

to give more three-dimensionality

I'm really impressed with this

Sweet God

- Is it pulling off your skin?
- Mm-hmm

- Is it hurting?
- Little bit

Thirty minutes to go

[pulsing electronic music plays]

Don't know how I've managed
to do this in this time

Okay, focus

Just get it done. Get it done

Ready?

Yeah. Should I put...? Yeah

I am really worried about Mikaél

because he spent so long
applying those prosthetic ears

Why even bother with ears
in the first place if you can't see them?

[snarls]

[Mikaél] Yeah
You need to, like, hold your breath

I need to get color on this
Otherwise, I'm in trouble. Ooh!

[tubes grating]

[model] I'm not gonna lie

- Mm?
- I can't wait to get out of this

Five minutes to go

- God
- Five minutes

I just have to be super quick

I'm going to deepen some of these ridges

[cheerful ethereal music plays]

I saw the model beforehand. She's like,
"I'm really worried what I'll look like."

I was like, "Babe, you'll be fine."
It's like, "Oops."

[judges laugh]

Mm, that's a big powder brush

I'll just add a little bit in the corners,
almost like cold sores

- Mm
- [Lisa chuckles]

Brushes down, please

[Kris sighs]

Please take your models
next door to be photographed

- High-five, model
- Yes!

[groovy percussive music plays]

[chuckles] After I've recovered from this,
then I might dabble

in sci-fi and prosthetics a little bit

I think I did a look
that was really imaginative

So, I hope that I've beat the seat

I do not know if I've done enough

But they wanted monster mutations,
so I gave it to them

And I'm proud of it

[Ryan] To get a "ding-dong"
from Val after winning yesterday

would just be, like,
completely next-level

[Sophie] I'm quite happy
with what I produced, yeah

It's exciting. I did it!

[tense music plays]

Sophie, please come forward

So, Sophie, please tell me
What is your monstrous mutation?

A group of scientists
have worked together to try and mix

plant cells and human cells,

but an alien mixes
a carnivorous plant with the potion

So, it goes wrong

I love your story

And what you've done is, you've shown me,

"Yeah, I can do this. Whatever."

- [laughs]
- You know? And that's really good

- Great job
- Thank you

[Danny Marie] Application, spot on

This amazing 3D work is original

I like the way you pushed yourself
to try something new

That's what an innovator does

And I think you should be
really proud of yourself

- Thank you
- Lisa

[Lisa] So, my monstrous mutation

is about a girl who suffered
from a pretty bad skin condition

So she's gone to a mad scientist,
but it goes really, really wrong

And she starts to slowly
and painfully mutate into this monster

This is a blockbuster

Every director wants to go all the way in

And I spent a while
trying to find faults with this,

zooming in and out, and I couldn't
I'm really, really impressed

[shouts] Sometimes you have to shout!

[softly] Sometimes you have to be quiet

This is a beautiful, exquisite makeup
in its quietness

It's believable. It's real

It was like she'd been sunburned
or she had eczema

I love it

- Thank you so much. Thank you
- [all applaud]

[Sophie] Yeah!

Mikaél, could you come forward?

My monstrous mutation is
about blending human and plants' DNA,

but it all went wrong

There's good things about this
The experimentation,

the different materials,

using the glue stick
to create those vines

I just don't think it hits
the technical side of things

I wish we could see
the prosthetic ears a little bit more

because you did apply them well

[Mikaél] Thank you

Black is the darkest color there is,
and the problem with that is,

it's really difficult
to lay color on black

because it sucks
the life out of everything

I feel like you were just thinking
as you were going

Mm-hmm

And sometimes, with that,
you end up getting lost

Yeah

Have you done enough

to get yourself out of the red chair?
Time will tell

[sighs]

Ryan, please come forward

[mellow music playing]

[Ryan] My concept is about a human
and rat hybrid that lives underground

in this dystopian future,

where the city and the sewage
is full of toxic waste

I really like what you've done here

And the mix between vibrancy
and subtlety works really well. Great job

Sewer savage

- [chuckles]
- It is dirty, dirty, dirty

- [laughs]
- I love sort of liver-spotted skin

Prosthetics, tick

Character, tick

Overall look, tick

Boom-shakalaka. Ding-dong. I love it

- Thank you
- [artists cheering]

[laughing]

- [Yong-chin] Yeah!
- [Lisa] Ding-dong!

Nancé, would you like to come down?

[intriguing music playing]

[Nancé] In Black and brown communities,

a lot of people feel
the pressure to lighten their skin

So, I wanted to take it
to the extreme and create a piece

that would be conversational
as well as educational

What makes a really good makeup artist

is the ability to think outside the box

and use what we do
to highlight issues like this

But, technically,
I think there's a way to go with this

I don't fully feel like I did
what I had planned on doing

I agree. But I think with just
a little bit more development work,

this could be absolutely striking

As a visual, it's stunning

- Thank you
- [Val] It's original

I love the fact that you sort of sewed
the flesh onto the wire

But I don't think
your story is told in this visual

Thank you

Yong-chin, would you like
to step forward, please?

[Yong-chin] My monstrous mutation
tells a story of someone

playing with black magic, and mixing
with sinister satanic creatures

Yong-chin, I have to say,
when I watch you work,

it's an absolute pleasure,

because you have a method
You think it through

I think it's really good

But looking around the room today,

the standard is really quite high

What really lets this makeup down
is the placement of things

Just imagine those horns
were facing the other way

You would've really elongated the look

And I think it might've made
a huge difference

I think you just need to trust yourself
because there's more to you than this

Thank you

Kris

[Kris] My monstrous mutation centers
around the ultimate social media high

Something goes wrong
and the person becomes reliant

on this validation as its life support

It's a really interesting concept,
and I feel that it really translates

into the look you've done

My one criticism, it's the finer details

There is ears that still are pink

And also water lines

Clean up those elements

But you're stepping
in the right direction

Okay. Thank you

The forehead prosthetic

You cut into them quite harshly,
and that's always a risk

When you're working with silicon,
there's nothing you can do afterwards

I would have liked
that extra finish to those prosthetics

Thank you, thank you

Rachel

[gentle music plays]

[Rachel] When I was about 12 years old,
I learned about human spaghettification

This is the image that I had in my head
of human cheese string/spaghetti

I'm actually really surprised
that you've never done prosthetics before

because this screams to me, "Experience."

The one thing that I would say is,
if you're gonna come directly

in front of the brow, go through it

But all in all, it's a great application

[Dominic] It's freaky. It's weird

The mouth being covered
is just horrifying

You've got the technical ability

You just need
to start adding in the extra layers

to make it
a fully round conceptual makeup

- Thank you so much
- [Val] Thank you

[Dominic] MUAs, thank you so much
If you'd like to go next door,

myself, Val, and Danny Marie
need to decide

which two of you will be going
into the Face Off elimination

[suspenseful music playing]

I'm feeling a bit nervous

I don't really know where I stand
in the competition at the minute

So, let's start by discussing the two MUAs
that were in the Face Off chairs

[Val] Yeah. Let's have a look at Mikaél

As much as I came here
to share my creativity,

I also came here to,
like, gain some knowledge

So, yeah, I'm really proud
with the overall, um, look

Although he's expressive,

he hasn't reached the quality
that other people have managed to achieve

So, the other MUA that started
in the Face Off chair was Yong-chin

The issue I've got with this look is

there's just lacking
any real depth of story

It's a creamy white face
with a black lip and some hairy horns

There's skill here

I just don't think the maturity is there

So, if there is a seat to fill,
then maybe we need to look at Nancé

[Val] It's an incredible image

But is it, in actual fact, prosthetics?

Technically, it is a prosthetic

Is it the most complicated thing
that we've seen?

Not from a technical standpoint

This isn't an easy decision this week

[tense music playing]

- [Maya] Hello, judges
- [Dominic] Hi

- Have you made your decision?
- We have

[Dominic] Mikaél...

your application improved
a lot from yesterday

But your use of color let you down

So unfortunately, you'll be the first MUA
going into the Face Off elimination

[Val] Yong-chin,
your character was really strong,

but your horns were too distracting

So, unfortunately,
you will be the second MUA

going into the Face Off

[Maya] Thank you, judges

[suspenseful music plays]

Okay, Yong-chin, Mikaél

Say your goodbyes
as one of you won't be returning

[Mikaél] I love you

Staying in this competition is everything

I've got a lot to prove

It's time to show
what Mikaél can actually do with makeup

I feel like you're fine

I know the judges expect a lot from me

So, I wanna live up to their expectations

[Maya] To level the playing field,

Mikaél and Yong-chin will face off
over a set of identical twins

Special effects makeup

is all about placement and precision

So, we want you to recreate
a floating pearl eyeliner

The key to a floating pearl eyeliner
is placement

First, work out
where the center pearl will be

To apply your pearls,
work from the center outwards

From largest to smallest,

towards the tear duct first

Repeat this process
out towards the outer corner of the eye

Step back. Is it symmetrical?

If you need to do some adjustments,

you need to do them quickly
before the glue sets

And there you have
the perfect floating pearl eyeliner

You'll see that your models already have
one floating pearl eyeliner on

What we want you to do is replicate it

You have 15 minutes to complete this look
Your time starts now

[suspenseful music playing]

Both of them
have not mapped out their look

They've worked
from the inside towards the out

You need to find your center

Yong-chin has created
that sort of nice evolving look

But I worry that she's used
too many of the larger pearls

Mikaél, on the other hand,
his is going up the hill

- Yeah
- Not a good look

Five minutes to go now

[suspenseful percussive music plays]

Thirty seconds now

Five, four, three,

two, one. Brushes down, please

[gentle music playing]

You ready for a conflab?

- I think so
- Let's go

[Val] Neither of them have replicated

the pearl liner from the other eye

Mikaél has used two large pearls
in the center

Yong-chin has used three

In terms of placement and neatness,

when I look at Mikaél's,

the pearls don't flow

[Dominic] Yong-chin has used
small to large to small

in a nice cohesive movement,

which has created,
in my view, a better eyeliner

[Val] It floats. It's neat

[tense music plays]

- Have you come to a decision?
- Yes, we have

[Dominic] Yes

Neither of you planned ahead

What you should've done
is started with a larger pearl,

and then worked your eyeliner
from that anchor

Yong-chin, you should've stepped back

and looked at your pearls,

because some of your pearls
were too large

But your placement flowed

[Dominic] Mikaél,
you started quickly and confidently

But your eyeliner became jagged,

and you used too much glue

Mikaél, unfortunately,
you'll be packing your kit and going home

Okay

You got this. I told you

- [Yong-chin sobs]
- Yong-chin, congratulations

- You're through to next week
- Thank you

Thank you

[Mikaél] Being in this competition
has helped me a lot

because most of the techniques,
I've never done before

And, um, this is not the end

This is actually the beginning,
you know, the start of the story

And it's just gonna bloom and flourish

And you're gonna see me everywhere

- [driving electronic music plays]
- [artists cheering]

[Sophie] Yes, Yong-chin!

[laughing]

I'm still here! [laughs]

Being in the Face Off,
it's not a nice experience

But it's a good experience
at the same time

because you can only go up from there

Literally, your hand was just, like,
going like that. It was like... [shudders]

No more latex and cotton

Big things from now on. [laughs]

Oh, Val, I love Prosthetics Week

Me too

It really gives us an opportunity to see
how far our MUAs can push makeup

Absolutely. But you know what
I'm looking forward to next week?

I'm looking forward
to seeing some more refined work

Go back to the house, get some rest,

as next week is gonna be a biggie

And this is one fashionable party
you do not want to miss

[all gasp and exclaim]

Okay. Bye. See you later

[groovy percussive music playing]
