Glow Up: Britain's Next Make-Up Star (2019–…): Season 4, Episode 5 - Episode #4.5 - full transcript
[glitchy electronic music plays]
We're over halfway in the competition
and our MUAs need to turn up their skills
Because this week, they need
to deliver record-breaking looks
to make sure they hit the headlines
- Morning, you lovely lot
- [artists] Morning
So, guys, strap yourselves in,
because today's assignment is massive
You have been booked to do a makeup look
for the legendary music magazine
Rolling Stone UK
- [all gasp]
- Wow
- Oh, my gosh
- Oh, my gosh. You're joking
[Maya] A pop-culture heavyweight
since 1967,
Rolling Stone has collaborated
with the world's most iconic artists
And since its UK launch in 2021,
has featured a who's who
of the hottest names in music
So, allow me to introduce to you
Editor in Chief of the magazine,
Cliff Joannou
[all applauding]
[upbeat music plays]
[Cliff] Hi, everyone
Today, here we are shooting a feature
with Grammy-nominated DJ,
Jayda G
You will be working
for our key makeup artist
to create one of the looks for the shoot
[all exclaim]
[Maya] All the way from the US of A,
give it up for Fenty Beauty's
global makeup artist...
- [gasps]
- ...and one of Rihanna's personal MUAs,
Hector Espinal
Oh, my God
[driving electronic music plays]
[all applaud]
- Hey!
- [laughing]
Oh, my God
Like, I wanted to drop down
onto the ground and just be swallowed up
Hello, everyone
- Hello
- Hello
Because it's just... It's too much!
[Maya] Makeup superstar Hector Espinal
has had his work featured
in publications around the globe
Today, he's in charge of the makeup team
on the shoot with Jayda G,
a world-class DJ and producer
who's performed on the biggest stages
from Glastonbury to Coachella
Your brief for the feature is '90s raver
- [gasps]
- [Hector] Inspired...
- [all laugh]
- Yes! I am in
...by the bright colors and atmosphere
of the '90s rave club scene
It is super important
that Jayda feels her best
So, bear in mind her preferences
She loves clean-looking makeup
And today, she wants
real emphasis around the eyes
and a standout bold lip
[dreamy music plays]
And I want to see amazing skin
And the MUA that comes up
with the best makeup
will go on and apply your look
on Jayda G herself
[both] Yes!
This is a huge deal because your look
will be featured in the magazine
both digitally and in print,
so it will be seen by millions globally
So give it your everything
All right, MUAs. You have
two hours to complete your look
Off you go
- [artists] Thank you
- [Maya] Go on
With Jayda G and the magazine
having gone for an on-trend '90s theme,
the MUAs can use
the outfits she'll be wearing
to help inspire their looks
[Nancé] I feel good
I feel like I'm in my comfort zone
To be fair, before I saw the clothes,
I was already thinking, like, green,
because it kind of screams '90s to me
What we're looking for today
is something that captures
the energy and the essence
of '90s clubbing
I'm going for that baby blue,
kinda Britney vibes from the '90s,
a bit of, like, Baby Spice
I want to keep it really nice and simple
As a makeup artist, it's very important
that you know your references
'90s rave for me means excitement,
sexiness, bold, graphic, grungy
It's a feeling. It's like a "Mm!"
[Maya] First step is
to create that fresh skin feel
Just, like, prepped and primed the skin
So, cleansed it, moisturized it
Going in with moisturizing base
[groovy music plays]
[Rachel] Oh, that's gone too light now
Damn!
What a nightmare
[Maya] Feeling the pressure
is last week's assignment winner Rachel
Hector does literally the job
that I would love to do
So this is, like, a massive deal
- [sing-song] Hello
- Hello
Are you all right?
- [laughs] No
- What's happened?
Oh, I'm just trying
to match her skin at the moment
- Okay
- And it's just taking me ages
Do you know much about '90s rave?
I watch a lot of, like,
'90s sort of music videos
So, I'm trying to think
of a color palette along those lines
- Yeah, some pinks
- Yeah. A little bit of orange
Okay, yeah. Just pretend
that you're in your bedroom,
and doing your favorite beauty look
- Just with a bit of pizzazz
- Yup
But then also remember
that it's got to photograph well
- Oh, my God. [laughs]
- And reference these kind of things
- And all of the other...
- Don't start!
Sorry, I'm trying to be positive
but then a bit realistic at the same time
[bouncy electronic music plays]
In the '90s, I was a fetus
So, I wasn't alive then, unfortunately
But I'm feeling confident
I love this challenge
[Maya] Throughout the competition,
Ryan has gained a reputation
for working quickly,
and today is no exception
I just want to stick
with an idea, go with it
And it will either work or it won't
[cheerful house music playing]
My makeup is an extension of myself
I'm fast at talking, fast at eating
I'm generally just a fast person
Not running, though
That's something I lack in
But with makeup especially,
I am such a fast, creative person
I feel like it's a superpower
but it's also my downfall,
because then sometimes I go too quickly,
and it can end up
looking a bit too rushed
I love a bit of '90s
And I love Jayda G as well. Like...
I'm super excited for this opportunity
to hopefully work with her
[moody electronic music plays]
[Maya] Jayda G is already on set
And shooting for some
of her other looks is underway
I love this
[Maya] The MUAs are competing
to create the last look of the day,
and Jayda G herself will help decide
which MUA best delivers
on the '90s rave brief
- [Cliff] That's really cute
- [laughs]
[Cliff] That's brilliant
Makeup artists, 30 minutes have passed
You have one hour and 30 minutes left
Okay. I think I'm happy
with that foundation, actually
[tropical house music playing]
Can you open your eyes?
[Yong-chin] I think the '90s shape
was always quite, like, blown out,
eyeliner on the bottom
and, like, a very, like, big eye
[Maya] Having found herself
in the Face Off two weeks running,
Yong-chin is banking on a bold look
It's better to go bigger, I think,
when you're looking
for that statement eye in a magazine
Close your eye for me
[intriguing music plays]
It's worth being a bit more risky
[Lisa] My color scheme
is powdery blue on top,
and then orange on the under-eye
[Maya] How do we think
Lisa's getting on right now?
Her usage of textures
and mediums is not risk-taking
Really missing the memo of,
you know, '90s and that rave part of it
[Maya] Okay
[uplifting house music playing]
I am a '90s baby
I was definitely too young
to be raving in the '90s. [laughs]
So, I don't know what
they were wearing on their face. [laughs]
The toughest challenge in my life
so far is actually making the decision
from going full-time teaching
to going for my goals and my dream
to actually work within makeup
I'm completely self-taught
I've never had any training,
or I don't have
any qualifications in makeup
I definitely think
it's just hours and hours of practice
And as a teacher, I do believe
that the best way you learn
is by getting, like,
not-so-good feedback sometimes
So, I am glad as well
that, you know, I have these experts there
that are giving me ways I can improve
I am 100% doing
this competition for myself
I need to prove it
to myself that, actually,
it can be more than a hobby for me,
that I haven't, you know,
done something silly by leaving teaching
Yeah, that I can... that I can do this
- This blue is so Britney
- [Lisa] It is so Britney, isn't it?
[intriguing music plays]
When I think '90s,
I think the Spice Girls
I would be Ginger Spice and my sister
would be the other four Spice Girls
[laughs]
I was too camp and fat to be Sporty Spice
Now I could be,
but, like, not then. [chuckles]
- Makeup artists, you have one hour left
- Cool
[pulsing house music plays]
[Nancé] I just wanna see...
This will go quite well
The '90s, along the crease,
they'll kinda have the bold color
And then on the actual lid,
they'll have the shimmery color
When you've got shimmer,
it's quite good
to use your finger and just tap,
'cause you get a better color payoff
'Cause the shimmers just sort of stay
on the flat surface rather...
When you use a brush, they get,
like, lost in the bristles a bit
[Kris] Happy with how it's going
I'm getting things nice
and clean and, like, balanced
Make sure everything's symmetrical
Finesse!
- [Maya] What do you think about Kris?
- I love the way he's doing skin
It really looks and feels very fresh,
plumpy, the right tone
Flip side, the eyeshadow
feels a little bit too safe
- It's giving very "pretty" type of deal
- Oh
I wanna see rave
[Maya] While Kris focuses
on delivering finesse...
Can you just turn on the side for me?
And I'll just see how
the light catches that. Great
[Maya] ...Nancé's hoping
her color scheme packs a '90s punch
Hi, Nancé
- Hi, Hector
- Talk to me through your look
[Nancé] Looking at the clothes...
had so many colors that clash
So, I was seeing a lot of green in there
And with the pink,
I wanted to use something
that would contrast the green
a little bit to make it stand out
I'm just trusting my instinct
and I'm just going with the flow. [laughs]
Maybe I can mix
a, like, orangey coral color
[Maya] With the skin and eyes complete,
most of the MUAs move on
to laying down a lip
[mellow house music plays]
I think I'm gonna go orange
with the lip. Mm
[Rachel] This is a classic '90s lip
They always have, like, the dark liner
and then the nudie sort of inside
[model] Mm!
That is so '90s. What the hell?
[Maya] But with 40 minutes to go...
I'm getting on good. Nearly done
[Maya] ...Ryan is racing ahead once again
[sighs] Right, then
[tense music plays]
[Maya] Ryan, what are
your thoughts on his look?
[Hector] The lip is really lacking for me
It's like a baby-doll look
- And we want rave
- We want rave
I mean, with 40 minutes,
you can definitely do,
like, a whole brand-new look
[Maya] Yeah
I'm nervous
I don't really know how to feel about it
I mean, I've never really seen
'90s rave makeup before,
so I'm just taking a good guess,
but the brief was about balancing it
So, I've kind of brought
the under-eye color,
the blush, and the lip,
is all sort of using the same shade
So, I'm hoping
that harmonizes it a little bit
MUAs, you have 15 minutes left
Oh! Okay, breathe
[bold electronic music playing]
I mean, it's really bold
- Yeah, but it goes
- But it goes. [squeals]
[Maya] With just minutes to go
until she helps pick the winner,
Jayda G arrives for a sneak peek
I had to stop breathing
for a second there
I would absolutely love
to work on that canvas
She's gorgeous. She looks so cool
[giggles]
- I hope she likes it
- [model] Mm
It's so hard guessing what they like
[Rachel] Okay
- [model speaks indistinctly]
- Gorgeous
High-five. Oh!
[both laugh]
- Ooh
- Whoo!
MUAs, time is up
Okay
Time to check your work on set
Models, follow me
[mellow music playing]
Bye
We are gonna win this
[Rachel squeals nervously]
[Maya] Time for the judges
to decide which MUA's rave look
is worthy of Rolling Stone UK
The difficulty with an editorial shoot
is that you have to portray
the vision of the magazine
And also, it is important
that you make your celebrity
feel iconic and look iconic
[intriguing music plays]
So, this is Lisa's model
The eyes, for me, are too theatrical
It's not quite dangerous enough
It's not nighttime
I don't think this is a rave makeup
It's missing that edge
It's missing that liner
It's missing them lashes
This looks like late '80s
[Maya] Up next,
last week's winner, Rachel
The lip is a little bit predictable,
the '90s with the lip liner and the gloss
But overall, this is a look
that I feel I can see
somebody at the club with
Gonna be a mess at the end
of the night, but I love it
[all laugh]
For me, Rachel...
nailed it '90s
- [Hector chuckles]
- It is fierce
It just really spoke to me
when I first saw it. It's super '90s
And most importantly, in an editorial,
on a photograph,
that will be really striking
If I can have the next model, please
What I feel like Yong-chin's done
is she's overcomplicated
It doesn't always have to be
opposite colors to be quite vibrant
I really like the wing bit at the end
It would have been wonderful
to see just that on its own,
not all the blue going up
towards the eyebrow
I kinda like the complexion
The fact that when she turns around,
you see that sheen still coming through
The skin still feels fresh
With some refinement,
this would've been a great look
This is Ryan's makeup
The overall balance feels very... dolly
Very '60s
It's just not edgy enough
Ryan put down his brushes
and there was still 40 minutes left
Because he felt
that he had completed his look
The smokiness
around the eyes is unbalanced
The blue eyeshadow and the draping,
they don't connect
And the lip looks thirsty
[chuckling]
[Hector] So, this is Nancé's model
[Val] That's exactly what
perfect skin should look like
She's used two different
colored highlighters here
And that's what gives this makeup
dimension and structure
Another great thing that Nancé kept
on doing was going back to the clothing,
really looking
at that texture, the fabric
And I can really see that in the skin
It would've been amazing if she had put
the green with just a hard black liner
Or pop a lash
Do something. Clump it up
Can I have Kris's model, please?
[intriguing music plays]
I like the complexion
Doesn't look or feel too dry
On the flip side, I feel like it looks
very pretty for, like, a prom
Kris has not shown us
a lot of refinement in his work so far
And actually, here, I'm seeing the polish
But as a rave look?
I don't think it's there
It's a very bright look
for what you would wear in the club
So, it just doesn't really match, I think
For me, there's definitely
two looks in the room
that I could see coming together
for this '90s ravers look, for sure
[tense music playing]
Congratulations, MUAs
There was a lot of pressure on you today
So, well done
[Dominic] Some of you
created some slamming looks
However, others...
went to a pretty prom
instead of a '90s rave
[Cliff] For me,
it's important that the magazine
features stylized editorial shoots
that will keep readers interested
[Hector] One of you really went
above and beyond
and really met all of our expectations
And the winner is...
Rachel!
- [Lisa] Oh, Rachel!
- [Kris] Heck yeah!
- What?
- [Lisa] Oh, my God
[all applaud]
Are you joking?
- [gasps]
- Congratulations, Rachel
Your look's gonna be featured
in Rolling Stone UK
and be seen by millions
of people globally
Thank you so much. That is insane
Now, let's grab your stuff
You gotta go and paint Jayda's face
- Come on
- [artists cheer]
[Rachel] I'm so happy, like...
I didn't think that I would win last week,
let alone this week as well. Like...
[sighs] Hopefully, it just continues
like this from now on
'cause I'm loving it
Hi!
- Hi!
- [Hector] Hi!
- [laughs]
- Oh, my God. It's so nice to meet you
Congratulations. We loved your look
- Oh, wow
- I'm gonna give you my tips and tricks
I'm here to guide you. Set it off, sis
[cheerful music plays]
[Maya] Before hitting the set,
Hector helps Rachel to refine her look
So, you start close
And you will know
because her eye will crease there
- Yes
- [Hector] Okay?
Working with Hector was just insane
[Hector] Make it a little bit more edgy
Clump the living life out of your lashes
so it could feel grungy
That's the sort of masterclass
that people pay absolute thousands for
[Rachel] So, what's it like
working with Rihanna?
Does she smell as good as everybody says?
- Absolutely
- [laughs]
[photographer] Yes. Love that
Oh, here we go. Nice
- I feel like you smashed it
- Aw! Thank you
- [laughs] Thank you so much
- Great job
[gentle music plays]
[Maya] As always,
the two MUAs who least impressed
will start tomorrow
in the Face Off chairs
So there's three MUAs
I think we need to talk about
So let's start with Ryan
His time management has let him down
[Val] His eye application,
it was just mucky
It wasn't clean and it wasn't precise
I can't be in the red chair
for the third time in this competition
Another MUA that I think
we should talk about is Lisa
I was looking for good skin
and she delivered good skin
Think she got lost
in the overall '90s rave theme
- It didn't look like '90s club makeup
- No
Where's the liner?
[Dominic] The final MUA
we need to talk about is Kris
With an assignment like this,
it is so important
to just listen to the brief
I think that I'm safe
I feel like I fit the brief
And I think it was, like...
- bold enough that it wasn't prom
- Yeah
What we really wanted
was edgy, grungy '90s rave
I think what we got
was just pretty prom makeup
What will be, will be, guys
[tense music playing]
[Maya] At Glow Up studios,
the MUAs are about to find out
whose off-brief looks
have landed them in trouble
If an MUA's name is on one
of the two red chairs,
they head for the Face Off
at the end of the day
[Kris gasps]
[flaps lips]
[sighs]
There we go
Hmm
Lisa, Ryan, sadly,
you are in the Face Off chairs,
which means you'll have 15 minutes less
to complete your look today
Ryan, you had so much time left
If you would have used it,
you would've realized that you had time
to change the eyeshadow
It was too heavy and it was not '90s rave
Lisa, your look was too predictable
It gave me prom
instead of giving me '90s rave
[Maya] There's only one way
to beat the seat
Impress the judges in the creative brief
so that another MUA takes their place
in the Face Off elimination
So, guys, yesterday,
you worked for an iconic magazine
renowned for images
that will go down in history
Today, we want you to produce a statue
that shows us
how you want to be remembered
[Dominic] Your look could be
about your personal journey,
your current achievements,
or your future ambitions
[Val] You must include
the head and shoulders
and one 3D element in your look
Now, guys. Come on, be brave
And show us something
that we will never forget
Okay. Are you ready?
[all] Yes!
- Bring in the models!
- [Kris] Whoo!
[uplifting house music plays]
Hi! [laughs]
Step into my office
- I'm really excited for this
- Me too
- I won yesterday, so...
- Oh, did you?
- You're in the right chair. [laughs]
- Yeah!
MUAs, you'll have two and a half hours
to complete your look
Lisa and Ryan, I'll let you know
when you can start
The rest of you, your time starts now
- [Lisa mock groans, laughs]
- [Nancé] Okay
[Yong-chin] Oh, I like that one
I need to speed like Speedy Gonzales
[laughs]
This look only has three colors
So, it really is, like,
based around the line work
And I have to make sure it's perfect
[Maya] Hoping to avoid
a third week in the Face Off,
Yong-chin has designed
a look all about bravery
[Yong-chin] I want
to be remembered for being fearless
It's based off of, like,
these Celtic warriors
that would, like, go into battle
It's a combination of symbols,
like, overlapping each other
to create, like, my own coat of arms
[spacey music plays]
My mom's Malaysian
and my dad's from Scotland,
and I grew up in Glasgow
At school, I felt pretty different
from the other children
But my name is Yong-chin
I used to always have an anxiety
of saying my name
to people if they asked me
Now I love my name
I'm, like, really proud of it
My parents didn't have any money,
then had four children
That's definitely
where I get my drive from
They always, like, instilled in us
to do everything,
like, 100% to your best efforts
During COVID, there was nothing happening
So, I just started to, like, play
with makeup a lot more
And I started to really push
for it to be a full-time job
As a self-taught makeup artist,
I think you just have to be fearless
[pulsing music plays]
Oh, this is so scary
I hate this
[chuckles]
Awks. Awkies
- All right, Lisa
- Hello
- It is your first time in the red chair
- Yeah
I'm a bit gutted with myself, but I'm
just trying to put that out of my head
So, tell me about your look today
[Lisa] I want
to be remembered for, you know,
if I have a talent or skill or something,
actually, like, chasing after it
and reaching that potential
So, my look is inspired by glassblowing
I was trying to think of something
that's kinda plain to start with,
like sand is
And sand has to go
through intense heat and flames and fire,
and it comes out the other side
as something beautiful and with purpose
And if you complete it,
you'll be reaching your potential
- Yeah, exactly
- So it all makes sense, doesn't it?
[mimics Ryan's accent] Hi, love
You all right?
- Hi, love. I'm belting
- What's happening?
Is anything worrying you about today?
No? Easy-breezy Ryan squeezy
Yeah. We'll just see
what happens, won't we?
- Fine. Don't worry about it
- [laughs]
[gentle music plays]
[Nancé] This is definitely not my bag
Oh, really?
No. Prosthetics is not my bag
Oh, my God. I can't
[Dominic winces]
What you do is you put it on,
you then map it, you then take it off
That's how you do it
- And then you cut it
- Yeah
[Dominic] I think we're gonna lose an ear
Or an eyebrow
Okay. Oh, my...
[sighs] I want to start
I'm too bored stood here
Okay, Ryan, Lisa. You can start
- Yay! [laughs]
- Right, see you in a bit
[Maya] He's off
[upbeat disco music plays]
Right, then. Let's go, let's go
I hope today that Ryan brings
some precision to his work,
because so far,
I've seen a lot of big makeups,
but I haven't seen any precision
[Rachel] My look
is based on the seraphim angel
They're basically, like,
the highest-ranking angels in heaven
'Cause I grew up, like, going
to church and being a Christian,
I've always thought about heaven
and, you know, being a good person here
so I can have that "everlasting life."
So, this is gonna be based
off of the biblical description
of how they have, like,
this all-seeing eye and six wings
Thirty minutes gone, everybody
Three-zero, down
[Val] I think this
is the heart of the matter
- [laughs]
- The Tree of Life
[Dominic] Mm
[Val] Pumping inside
with heartfelt emotion
You're reading a lot into that
If there's ribs and there's a heart,
it could be offal
No, I think it's gonna be great
- This eye covering...
- No, "offal." Not "awful."
- Oh
- [laughs]
That looks like a dog bone
Close. Tree bark
Is it? And that...
I'm smelling fish. Is that that?
- That's latex. Latex stinks
- Oh, my goodness. It's potent
- [Kris] It's fishy, yeah
- Yeah
[Maya] Kris's look
features homemade prosthetics
and is inspired
by his connection to his homeland
The thing I wanna be remembered for
is being grounded
So, I wanted this to be
like a little love letter for Ireland
We're gonna have half the face
be like this bronze statue
Then you have the overgrowth and greenery
kind of growing up from the heart
'Cause, like, this overgrowth
is literally everywhere where I'm from
Back to the original roots
- Exactly
- See what I did there?
- Gotta be-leaf in yourself
- "Be-leave!" You got that from somewhere
- Just from here. [laughs]
- You're smart
[moody music plays]
Staying neat and within the line
is majorly important with this one
Like, be neat, but be quick
Don't mess about, me. I get it on
[chuckles]
[Nancé] Close your eyes for me
I'm just gonna map out
where I want this to go
Okay. Sorry
- No, it's okay
- Feel like I'm squashing your head
- [all gasp]
- Oh, that is incredible
- Shut up, shut up, shut up
- Three... Shut the front door
I'm creating two faces
because there are many aspects of me
that I'd like to be remembered by
So, the idea of having this face open up
and have this face come out,
and just letting people know
that I'm good at many things,
not just one thing
[lively percussive music plays]
I just hope she sticks down
those edges of the two prosthetics
- [Dominic] Yeah
- 'Cause at the moment, they're lifting
[Maya] Prior to the competition,
Nancé had never used prosthetics before
Prosthetic is not my forte at all
I'm doing it because I don't know how else
I can tell my story without not doing it
This is the way it'll hug your head
[Maya] Also using prosthetics
is special effects student Ryan...
[Ryan] I've put the cheekbones
at the side of the head
just 'cause it makes
the temples look larger
[Maya] ...who wants
to be remembered for his unique mind
[Ryan] The edges aren't the best,
but I'm not that bothered
because paint can cover any mistake
He needs to create a blend
from the skin to the prosthetic by using...
cotton wool and latex
[moody electronic music plays]
One hour to go
[Ryan] Look at me from here
Unreal
Oh, it's lifting. Ugh, gosh
Why are the odds never in my favor?
[chuckles]
I need to get a move on
'cause that hour's gonna go by very fast
[Lisa] Am I doing the right thing?
No, I'm not
I just have to follow my plan
[Maya] Lisa's banking
on her detailed color work
to help her beat the seat
[Lisa] I actually have watched
a lot of glassblowing art,
and there's always these rich reds,
yellows, and oranges
And then in my design,
I've added a bit of blue
'cause blues...
blues and purples are my color
So I feel I had to add
a bit of me in there as well
[Val] Oh!
I think Yong-chin
has really moved the goalpost
She's just floating around
and just giving that incredible line work
with such ease and grace
This neck moment is giving me life
- It's really, really...
- Symmetry
[mellow music playing]
[Kris] I've got, like, a really clean,
polished bronze effect
So now I'm just going over
and bringing out
kinda highlighted bits with gold
Then I'll go in with some blacks as well
to, like, recess certain parts
like it's been rained on for years
Okay
That'll do for now
Do you wanna fill in the ear now?
Yes, yes, yes
[Rachel laughs]
Rachel hasn't done a lot
in the time frame
The problem is,
all the makeup is just the face
- She's...
- She's still missing shoulders
If she fails, she's got nowhere to hide
She will be in the Face Off elimination
[Maya] With less than an hour to go...
[Rachel sighs]
[Maya] ...most of the MUAs
have started work on their finer details
[Ryan] These are the cogs I'm using
to accentuate the idea of the mind
and how the mind works
I see my mind as like gears turning
in different directions
and different ways
When it's finished,
I'll be very surprised
if I don't defeat the seat
- Hi, Lisa
- Hi, Hector
Where are you incorporating
your 3D element?
So, my 3D element comes in
with the dotting and the thread work
In the blown glass art,
there's a lot of dotting
and line work like this that goes...
When the glass is liquidy,
they wrap around
So, I think it works well with my look
- Well, good luck
- Oh, thank you
[suspenseful music plays]
Yeah. Let go
[laughs]
Oh, wow. Oh, my God
That looks really cool
[Kris] That looks very dark
with everything black,
but don't worry. We're gonna go
a little bit lighter. [chuckles]
Thirty minutes remaining
That's when you gotta
crank it up to gear six
You've got such big broad shoulders
- Thank you
- Gonna be here all day
[Ryan] All my 3D elements,
I think are popping
He doesn't have a vision
What I'm seeing here...
is a robot
[Dominic] The execution
of what he's trying to accomplish
is missing the mark
And that thread...
it just isn't doing
what he wants it to do
I want it to kinda fall down
The only thing that's stressing me out
is this part of the prosthetic
It... It keeps lifting
I'm gonna apply
some Pros-Aide cream inside
It needs to stick down, okay?
[chuckles]
It needs to
The idea is amazing
It's just the execution may not
live up to our expectation
Fifteen minutes remaining, guys
[Rachel] I'm trying
to sort out my wings now
[Nancé] Stay down, please
It'd mean absolutely everything to me
to get out of the red chair
I'm so not ready to go home yet
I just hope...
[chuckles] God, what is wrong?
[breathes deeply]
[sighs] I'm sorry
[tense percussive music playing]
I'm just adding some greenery
and some coffee and some plants
just to really bring in life
into the look
Please! Please stay down
I will hold this until they say,
"MUAs, brushes down." [laughs]
Five minutes left
Just getting on my last two wings
Keep it here, keep it here
[cheerful ethereal music plays]
Oh, gosh
Just little finishing touches
I think the shoulders
are fine as they are
You look sick
I'm actually buzzing with mine
Okay, time's up
Brushes down
Please take your models
next door to be photographed
Aw! You look insane
I'm just worried
[groovy percussive music plays]
I'm just getting a bit emotional
because this competition
literally means everything to me
I wanna prove to myself
and to, like, everyone
that stopping teaching and coming
into this was, like, the right decision
[Rachel] I'm happy with what I did
and I'm proud of myself
I feel like it would be such a shame
for me to screw up now
after the last, like, two weeks
have been amazing
[Yong-chin] It would mean a lot to me
to get good feedback on this look
I think my last two weeks
haven't went very well at all
I'm due some good news. [laughs]
Nancé, please step forward
[spacey electronic music plays]
How would you like to be remembered?
[Nancé] I'd like to be remembered
for being multifaceted
And a lot of the times,
I don't get to show it
So, being in this competition,
I'm pushing myself every week
to show something different
[Hector] I love your usage of color
The mascara. Those key elements. The lip
Love the lip
[Val] I think it's an incredible idea,
but did you clean the area first
before you laid down your prosthetic?
Oh, no
Hallelujah!
I forgot
You've always got to clean the area
that you're going to put the glue on
Otherwise, you always run
the risk of it lifting
But on the whole, a wonderful idea
Thank you so much
Yong-chin
[gentle melancholic music plays]
[Yong-chin] I wanted
to be remembered for being fearless
So, I thought about all
the Scottish warriors
and how they were always undefeated,
so this look was my creation
of my own coat of arms,
combining Celtic symbols and stud work
You are back,
and you are back with a vengeance
I get the Celtic story
I see the warrior
This is a masterpiece in makeup
Ding-dong, darling
- Ding-dong, you delivered
- Thank you
- [all applaud]
- Thank you
[uplifting music plays]
- Great job. Thank you
- Yeah
Thank you so much. Thank you
- [Kris speaks indistinctly]
- Thank you
- Give me five, girl
- [Yong-chin laughs]
Oh, I'm scared. [laughs]
Ryan, please step forward
[spacey music plays]
[Ryan] I want to be remembered
for my mind, essentially
I wanted to use things
like the cogs, the string, the color,
and the asymmetric prosthetic pieces
because I feel like the cogs in my brain
don't go together most of the time,
and that makes me me and unique
[Dominic] I love the gold
and I also really love the blue
It gives the eye things to look at
Your story's telling me
that you've got all these ideas,
but your cogs are really sporadic
- [Ryan] Yeah
- And really non-existent
It's like, "But that's not
what's going on in Ryan's brain."
- Yeah
- So, it's the translation
That's what you need to work on
I don't see a vision
I don't see a precise story
If I'm honest, I'm disappointed
Oh
[Val] Because we are Week Five
I was expecting more from you
I don't know if you've... grown
Okay
Rachel, if you can please step forward
[cheerful music playing]
[Rachel] My look,
it's inspired by the seraphim angel,
which is the highest-ranking angel
in heaven
No matter what I achieve in this life,
I'm thinking more about what
will happen to me afterwards
And hopefully,
I'll be in heaven with this high rank
I love these brush strokes
Sort of looks like a real painting to me
If I go...
to the ear,
this ear isn't finished
However, on the other side,
it is
Ear, don't know. Body, bare
I'm worried
Lisa
[hypnotic guitar music plays]
[Lisa] I want to be remembered
for reaching my full potential
So, to show this, I wanted
to be inspired by glass-blown art
So, the process of glassblowing
takes something
really boring and plain like sand,
puts it through intense pressure
to reform it completely
into something purposeful and beautiful
[sighs]
Lisa
Do you love it?
- I'm just obsessed
- Oh, thank God
I love your story
It translates so beautifully
because you've allowed
the quality of that white
to be almost translucent
so that we see the colors underneath
It's just genius
Try not to get emotional here, but...
it is insane
[sniffles]
Oof!
I love the color. I love the pattern
I love the movement
What a way of bouncing back
[chuckles]
Congratulations
Thank you so much
[hopeful music playing]
This is the glass ceiling of makeup
This is a modern masterpiece
- Definitely a ding-dong, darling
- [gasps]
- Definitely a ding-dong
- [all applaud]
- Unbelievable. I love it
- [laughs]
Thank you. Thank you. [chuckles]
[sobs]
Kris, if you can please step forward
[suspenseful music plays]
[Kris] The thing that I want
to be remembered for is being grounded
I'm from a very remote part of Ireland
During lockdown, I got the opportunity
to go back and live there as an adult
And being able to take in the beauty
really acted as a source
of therapy for me
So, this is kind of
my love letter to Ireland
So, as a makeup artist,
we are always seeking
for inspiration, right?
In this case, I had to fly all the way
from New York across the sea to London
to meet you, for you to inspire me
[gasps] Thank you
The fact that you made
your own prosthetics, for me,
is mind-blowing
This highlight...
I can see that from a mile
[chuckling]
Your model looks like a bronze statue
because you've got the balance
of getting that roughness,
but just the right amount of finesse
- Well done
- Thank you
- Ding-dong, darling. Ding-dong
- [all applaud]
- Ding-dong
- Thank you
It's amazing!
- Thank you
- Amazing!
[Kris exclaims]
Thank you, MUAs
Please take yourselves next door
whilst myself, Dominic, and Hector decide
who goes into the Face Off elimination
[suspenseful music plays]
[Lisa squeals and laughs] What?
I'm in the Face Off
- Oh, no
- [all chuckle]
[Maya speaks indistinctly]
Shall we talk about Ryan?
Do we think he's done enough
to beat the seat?
I have to honestly say no
[Dominic] There is very little
going on in this makeup
And that's what's so frustrating 'cause
there's so much going on in his head
It's already Week Five
It's a competition
So, what are you bringing to the table?
I think we're all in agreement
that Lisa has beat the seat
So, who's gonna fill that seat?
I think we need to talk about Rachel
There's no makeup on the shoulders
We've got one ear that's colored
and the other ear that's not finished
Guys, I think we also need
to talk about Nancé
[Dominic] I think she has got
a really unique thought process
What I always get from Nancé, though, is...
that she just gives us her first draft
when, actually, what we're looking for
is the finished item
It's a tough decision this week
[tense music plays]
The standard of the work in the room
this week has been outstanding
So, that's made this decision really hard
As you know, in this industry,
you're only as good as your last look
Lisa and Ryan, you found yourself
in the Face Off chairs today
Lisa, you've beat the seat
- [applauding]
- Congratulations
Ryan, your look didn't tell a story,
and the gold statue didn't have
enough dimension within its makeup
So, unfortunately, you'll be the first MUA
going into the Face Off elimination
Which means we have another seat to fill
[Dominic] This MUA had a great concept,
but there was some
fundamental makeup mistakes
Plus, it didn't fulfill the brief
The second MUA
going into the Face Off elimination...
will be Rachel
Thank you, judges
[Dominic] Thank you
[Yong-chin] Good luck, guys
Take deep breaths
I need to stay in this competition
To go home today
would be absolutely devastating
I definitely think
that I deserve to be here
I've worked my socks off
It's not over yet
[tense music playing]
[Maya] To level the playing field,
the MUAs will face off
over a set of identical twins
For your Face Off elimination this week,
we want you to create
a rectangular crystal blocked brow
To create the perfect gemstone brow,
start by marking the baseline
with a skin-tone pencil
Draw straight across to the lowest point
of the brow on the outside edge
Apply lash glue to this line
and once it starts getting tacky,
start applying your gemstones
to the brow, working from one brow
to the other in rotation
When the first line is complete,
repeat the process to the line above
Keep repeating this process
until the natural brow
is completely covered
and only the gemstone brow is visible
Symmetry and placement is key
Best of luck to both of you
You'll have 20 minutes
to complete your look
Your time starts now
[suspenseful music playing]
Okay. You're halfway through now
[both] Well...
[Dominic] What we've got
is the classic story
of The Tortoise and the Hare
We've got little pocket rocket Ryan,
who has just shot out the gate,
and it's, "tac-tac-tac-tac."
[Val] Yeah
[Dominic] Whereas Rachel
is being slow and methodical
We could end up with perfect placement,
but they haven't finished in time
[Dominic] I just don't know
who's gonna do it
Slow and steady or pocket rocket
Time will tell
[suspenseful percussive music plays]
Okay, five minutes left
Five, four, three, two, one
[sighs]
- Rachel
- Oh, God
[gentle music playing]
Conflab?
I think so
[sighs]
I got a take
because I've been counting the gems
On Rachel's, there is a perfect 15
all the way on both sides
Whereas on Ryan,
one side, there is 12
On the other side, there's 13
And there is much more hair visible
It wasn't rectangular, diagonal, perfect
[suspenseful music plays]
You were asked to create
rectangular crystal blocked brows
Now, precision was key
Rachel
You were methodical
You gave me placement and precision
Ryan, you jumped straight out of the gate
But you didn't deliver what we asked for
You created an uneven number,
where most of the rows consisted of 12,
except for one...
that consisted of 13 gemstones
So, unfortunately,
Ryan, you'll be going home
Please pack your kit
[sad music playing]
Aw
Go and smash it!
- [laughs]
- [Ryan speaks indistinctly]
- Aw, I love you
- Aw
This has been, like, one
of the best experiences ever
- You go
- Thank you
- You were so much fun to work with
- You've come so far
You did such a great job
I've learned so, so much
since I've been here
The critiques have been amazing
They've been so fair, as well
- Don't stop
- [Dominic] Don't stop
- [Ryan] I will not
- Slow down
- Slow down? Yeah
- But don't stop
[Ryan] I'm gonna go home now
and really refine myself
And I'm gonna be a powerhouse
So, we'll just have to see
[chuckles]
[driving electronic music plays]
- [squeals]
- [Lisa laughs]
What's good? Yes, yes, yes!
Yes, yes, yes!
- [Maya] Oh, my God!
- [laughing]
That was just so intense
This whole week has just been
such a roller coaster
I can't wait for the next week
And I'm just gonna work on everything
I'm gonna make sure that I give myself
so much time at the end
so that I can just look at the details,
because that's what
it's coming down to now
[Lisa] Well done
Get some rest, as next week,
you're going digital
[all cheer and laugh]
[groovy percussive music playing]
We're over halfway in the competition
and our MUAs need to turn up their skills
Because this week, they need
to deliver record-breaking looks
to make sure they hit the headlines
- Morning, you lovely lot
- [artists] Morning
So, guys, strap yourselves in,
because today's assignment is massive
You have been booked to do a makeup look
for the legendary music magazine
Rolling Stone UK
- [all gasp]
- Wow
- Oh, my gosh
- Oh, my gosh. You're joking
[Maya] A pop-culture heavyweight
since 1967,
Rolling Stone has collaborated
with the world's most iconic artists
And since its UK launch in 2021,
has featured a who's who
of the hottest names in music
So, allow me to introduce to you
Editor in Chief of the magazine,
Cliff Joannou
[all applauding]
[upbeat music plays]
[Cliff] Hi, everyone
Today, here we are shooting a feature
with Grammy-nominated DJ,
Jayda G
You will be working
for our key makeup artist
to create one of the looks for the shoot
[all exclaim]
[Maya] All the way from the US of A,
give it up for Fenty Beauty's
global makeup artist...
- [gasps]
- ...and one of Rihanna's personal MUAs,
Hector Espinal
Oh, my God
[driving electronic music plays]
[all applaud]
- Hey!
- [laughing]
Oh, my God
Like, I wanted to drop down
onto the ground and just be swallowed up
Hello, everyone
- Hello
- Hello
Because it's just... It's too much!
[Maya] Makeup superstar Hector Espinal
has had his work featured
in publications around the globe
Today, he's in charge of the makeup team
on the shoot with Jayda G,
a world-class DJ and producer
who's performed on the biggest stages
from Glastonbury to Coachella
Your brief for the feature is '90s raver
- [gasps]
- [Hector] Inspired...
- [all laugh]
- Yes! I am in
...by the bright colors and atmosphere
of the '90s rave club scene
It is super important
that Jayda feels her best
So, bear in mind her preferences
She loves clean-looking makeup
And today, she wants
real emphasis around the eyes
and a standout bold lip
[dreamy music plays]
And I want to see amazing skin
And the MUA that comes up
with the best makeup
will go on and apply your look
on Jayda G herself
[both] Yes!
This is a huge deal because your look
will be featured in the magazine
both digitally and in print,
so it will be seen by millions globally
So give it your everything
All right, MUAs. You have
two hours to complete your look
Off you go
- [artists] Thank you
- [Maya] Go on
With Jayda G and the magazine
having gone for an on-trend '90s theme,
the MUAs can use
the outfits she'll be wearing
to help inspire their looks
[Nancé] I feel good
I feel like I'm in my comfort zone
To be fair, before I saw the clothes,
I was already thinking, like, green,
because it kind of screams '90s to me
What we're looking for today
is something that captures
the energy and the essence
of '90s clubbing
I'm going for that baby blue,
kinda Britney vibes from the '90s,
a bit of, like, Baby Spice
I want to keep it really nice and simple
As a makeup artist, it's very important
that you know your references
'90s rave for me means excitement,
sexiness, bold, graphic, grungy
It's a feeling. It's like a "Mm!"
[Maya] First step is
to create that fresh skin feel
Just, like, prepped and primed the skin
So, cleansed it, moisturized it
Going in with moisturizing base
[groovy music plays]
[Rachel] Oh, that's gone too light now
Damn!
What a nightmare
[Maya] Feeling the pressure
is last week's assignment winner Rachel
Hector does literally the job
that I would love to do
So this is, like, a massive deal
- [sing-song] Hello
- Hello
Are you all right?
- [laughs] No
- What's happened?
Oh, I'm just trying
to match her skin at the moment
- Okay
- And it's just taking me ages
Do you know much about '90s rave?
I watch a lot of, like,
'90s sort of music videos
So, I'm trying to think
of a color palette along those lines
- Yeah, some pinks
- Yeah. A little bit of orange
Okay, yeah. Just pretend
that you're in your bedroom,
and doing your favorite beauty look
- Just with a bit of pizzazz
- Yup
But then also remember
that it's got to photograph well
- Oh, my God. [laughs]
- And reference these kind of things
- And all of the other...
- Don't start!
Sorry, I'm trying to be positive
but then a bit realistic at the same time
[bouncy electronic music plays]
In the '90s, I was a fetus
So, I wasn't alive then, unfortunately
But I'm feeling confident
I love this challenge
[Maya] Throughout the competition,
Ryan has gained a reputation
for working quickly,
and today is no exception
I just want to stick
with an idea, go with it
And it will either work or it won't
[cheerful house music playing]
My makeup is an extension of myself
I'm fast at talking, fast at eating
I'm generally just a fast person
Not running, though
That's something I lack in
But with makeup especially,
I am such a fast, creative person
I feel like it's a superpower
but it's also my downfall,
because then sometimes I go too quickly,
and it can end up
looking a bit too rushed
I love a bit of '90s
And I love Jayda G as well. Like...
I'm super excited for this opportunity
to hopefully work with her
[moody electronic music plays]
[Maya] Jayda G is already on set
And shooting for some
of her other looks is underway
I love this
[Maya] The MUAs are competing
to create the last look of the day,
and Jayda G herself will help decide
which MUA best delivers
on the '90s rave brief
- [Cliff] That's really cute
- [laughs]
[Cliff] That's brilliant
Makeup artists, 30 minutes have passed
You have one hour and 30 minutes left
Okay. I think I'm happy
with that foundation, actually
[tropical house music playing]
Can you open your eyes?
[Yong-chin] I think the '90s shape
was always quite, like, blown out,
eyeliner on the bottom
and, like, a very, like, big eye
[Maya] Having found herself
in the Face Off two weeks running,
Yong-chin is banking on a bold look
It's better to go bigger, I think,
when you're looking
for that statement eye in a magazine
Close your eye for me
[intriguing music plays]
It's worth being a bit more risky
[Lisa] My color scheme
is powdery blue on top,
and then orange on the under-eye
[Maya] How do we think
Lisa's getting on right now?
Her usage of textures
and mediums is not risk-taking
Really missing the memo of,
you know, '90s and that rave part of it
[Maya] Okay
[uplifting house music playing]
I am a '90s baby
I was definitely too young
to be raving in the '90s. [laughs]
So, I don't know what
they were wearing on their face. [laughs]
The toughest challenge in my life
so far is actually making the decision
from going full-time teaching
to going for my goals and my dream
to actually work within makeup
I'm completely self-taught
I've never had any training,
or I don't have
any qualifications in makeup
I definitely think
it's just hours and hours of practice
And as a teacher, I do believe
that the best way you learn
is by getting, like,
not-so-good feedback sometimes
So, I am glad as well
that, you know, I have these experts there
that are giving me ways I can improve
I am 100% doing
this competition for myself
I need to prove it
to myself that, actually,
it can be more than a hobby for me,
that I haven't, you know,
done something silly by leaving teaching
Yeah, that I can... that I can do this
- This blue is so Britney
- [Lisa] It is so Britney, isn't it?
[intriguing music plays]
When I think '90s,
I think the Spice Girls
I would be Ginger Spice and my sister
would be the other four Spice Girls
[laughs]
I was too camp and fat to be Sporty Spice
Now I could be,
but, like, not then. [chuckles]
- Makeup artists, you have one hour left
- Cool
[pulsing house music plays]
[Nancé] I just wanna see...
This will go quite well
The '90s, along the crease,
they'll kinda have the bold color
And then on the actual lid,
they'll have the shimmery color
When you've got shimmer,
it's quite good
to use your finger and just tap,
'cause you get a better color payoff
'Cause the shimmers just sort of stay
on the flat surface rather...
When you use a brush, they get,
like, lost in the bristles a bit
[Kris] Happy with how it's going
I'm getting things nice
and clean and, like, balanced
Make sure everything's symmetrical
Finesse!
- [Maya] What do you think about Kris?
- I love the way he's doing skin
It really looks and feels very fresh,
plumpy, the right tone
Flip side, the eyeshadow
feels a little bit too safe
- It's giving very "pretty" type of deal
- Oh
I wanna see rave
[Maya] While Kris focuses
on delivering finesse...
Can you just turn on the side for me?
And I'll just see how
the light catches that. Great
[Maya] ...Nancé's hoping
her color scheme packs a '90s punch
Hi, Nancé
- Hi, Hector
- Talk to me through your look
[Nancé] Looking at the clothes...
had so many colors that clash
So, I was seeing a lot of green in there
And with the pink,
I wanted to use something
that would contrast the green
a little bit to make it stand out
I'm just trusting my instinct
and I'm just going with the flow. [laughs]
Maybe I can mix
a, like, orangey coral color
[Maya] With the skin and eyes complete,
most of the MUAs move on
to laying down a lip
[mellow house music plays]
I think I'm gonna go orange
with the lip. Mm
[Rachel] This is a classic '90s lip
They always have, like, the dark liner
and then the nudie sort of inside
[model] Mm!
That is so '90s. What the hell?
[Maya] But with 40 minutes to go...
I'm getting on good. Nearly done
[Maya] ...Ryan is racing ahead once again
[sighs] Right, then
[tense music plays]
[Maya] Ryan, what are
your thoughts on his look?
[Hector] The lip is really lacking for me
It's like a baby-doll look
- And we want rave
- We want rave
I mean, with 40 minutes,
you can definitely do,
like, a whole brand-new look
[Maya] Yeah
I'm nervous
I don't really know how to feel about it
I mean, I've never really seen
'90s rave makeup before,
so I'm just taking a good guess,
but the brief was about balancing it
So, I've kind of brought
the under-eye color,
the blush, and the lip,
is all sort of using the same shade
So, I'm hoping
that harmonizes it a little bit
MUAs, you have 15 minutes left
Oh! Okay, breathe
[bold electronic music playing]
I mean, it's really bold
- Yeah, but it goes
- But it goes. [squeals]
[Maya] With just minutes to go
until she helps pick the winner,
Jayda G arrives for a sneak peek
I had to stop breathing
for a second there
I would absolutely love
to work on that canvas
She's gorgeous. She looks so cool
[giggles]
- I hope she likes it
- [model] Mm
It's so hard guessing what they like
[Rachel] Okay
- [model speaks indistinctly]
- Gorgeous
High-five. Oh!
[both laugh]
- Ooh
- Whoo!
MUAs, time is up
Okay
Time to check your work on set
Models, follow me
[mellow music playing]
Bye
We are gonna win this
[Rachel squeals nervously]
[Maya] Time for the judges
to decide which MUA's rave look
is worthy of Rolling Stone UK
The difficulty with an editorial shoot
is that you have to portray
the vision of the magazine
And also, it is important
that you make your celebrity
feel iconic and look iconic
[intriguing music plays]
So, this is Lisa's model
The eyes, for me, are too theatrical
It's not quite dangerous enough
It's not nighttime
I don't think this is a rave makeup
It's missing that edge
It's missing that liner
It's missing them lashes
This looks like late '80s
[Maya] Up next,
last week's winner, Rachel
The lip is a little bit predictable,
the '90s with the lip liner and the gloss
But overall, this is a look
that I feel I can see
somebody at the club with
Gonna be a mess at the end
of the night, but I love it
[all laugh]
For me, Rachel...
nailed it '90s
- [Hector chuckles]
- It is fierce
It just really spoke to me
when I first saw it. It's super '90s
And most importantly, in an editorial,
on a photograph,
that will be really striking
If I can have the next model, please
What I feel like Yong-chin's done
is she's overcomplicated
It doesn't always have to be
opposite colors to be quite vibrant
I really like the wing bit at the end
It would have been wonderful
to see just that on its own,
not all the blue going up
towards the eyebrow
I kinda like the complexion
The fact that when she turns around,
you see that sheen still coming through
The skin still feels fresh
With some refinement,
this would've been a great look
This is Ryan's makeup
The overall balance feels very... dolly
Very '60s
It's just not edgy enough
Ryan put down his brushes
and there was still 40 minutes left
Because he felt
that he had completed his look
The smokiness
around the eyes is unbalanced
The blue eyeshadow and the draping,
they don't connect
And the lip looks thirsty
[chuckling]
[Hector] So, this is Nancé's model
[Val] That's exactly what
perfect skin should look like
She's used two different
colored highlighters here
And that's what gives this makeup
dimension and structure
Another great thing that Nancé kept
on doing was going back to the clothing,
really looking
at that texture, the fabric
And I can really see that in the skin
It would've been amazing if she had put
the green with just a hard black liner
Or pop a lash
Do something. Clump it up
Can I have Kris's model, please?
[intriguing music plays]
I like the complexion
Doesn't look or feel too dry
On the flip side, I feel like it looks
very pretty for, like, a prom
Kris has not shown us
a lot of refinement in his work so far
And actually, here, I'm seeing the polish
But as a rave look?
I don't think it's there
It's a very bright look
for what you would wear in the club
So, it just doesn't really match, I think
For me, there's definitely
two looks in the room
that I could see coming together
for this '90s ravers look, for sure
[tense music playing]
Congratulations, MUAs
There was a lot of pressure on you today
So, well done
[Dominic] Some of you
created some slamming looks
However, others...
went to a pretty prom
instead of a '90s rave
[Cliff] For me,
it's important that the magazine
features stylized editorial shoots
that will keep readers interested
[Hector] One of you really went
above and beyond
and really met all of our expectations
And the winner is...
Rachel!
- [Lisa] Oh, Rachel!
- [Kris] Heck yeah!
- What?
- [Lisa] Oh, my God
[all applaud]
Are you joking?
- [gasps]
- Congratulations, Rachel
Your look's gonna be featured
in Rolling Stone UK
and be seen by millions
of people globally
Thank you so much. That is insane
Now, let's grab your stuff
You gotta go and paint Jayda's face
- Come on
- [artists cheer]
[Rachel] I'm so happy, like...
I didn't think that I would win last week,
let alone this week as well. Like...
[sighs] Hopefully, it just continues
like this from now on
'cause I'm loving it
Hi!
- Hi!
- [Hector] Hi!
- [laughs]
- Oh, my God. It's so nice to meet you
Congratulations. We loved your look
- Oh, wow
- I'm gonna give you my tips and tricks
I'm here to guide you. Set it off, sis
[cheerful music plays]
[Maya] Before hitting the set,
Hector helps Rachel to refine her look
So, you start close
And you will know
because her eye will crease there
- Yes
- [Hector] Okay?
Working with Hector was just insane
[Hector] Make it a little bit more edgy
Clump the living life out of your lashes
so it could feel grungy
That's the sort of masterclass
that people pay absolute thousands for
[Rachel] So, what's it like
working with Rihanna?
Does she smell as good as everybody says?
- Absolutely
- [laughs]
[photographer] Yes. Love that
Oh, here we go. Nice
- I feel like you smashed it
- Aw! Thank you
- [laughs] Thank you so much
- Great job
[gentle music plays]
[Maya] As always,
the two MUAs who least impressed
will start tomorrow
in the Face Off chairs
So there's three MUAs
I think we need to talk about
So let's start with Ryan
His time management has let him down
[Val] His eye application,
it was just mucky
It wasn't clean and it wasn't precise
I can't be in the red chair
for the third time in this competition
Another MUA that I think
we should talk about is Lisa
I was looking for good skin
and she delivered good skin
Think she got lost
in the overall '90s rave theme
- It didn't look like '90s club makeup
- No
Where's the liner?
[Dominic] The final MUA
we need to talk about is Kris
With an assignment like this,
it is so important
to just listen to the brief
I think that I'm safe
I feel like I fit the brief
And I think it was, like...
- bold enough that it wasn't prom
- Yeah
What we really wanted
was edgy, grungy '90s rave
I think what we got
was just pretty prom makeup
What will be, will be, guys
[tense music playing]
[Maya] At Glow Up studios,
the MUAs are about to find out
whose off-brief looks
have landed them in trouble
If an MUA's name is on one
of the two red chairs,
they head for the Face Off
at the end of the day
[Kris gasps]
[flaps lips]
[sighs]
There we go
Hmm
Lisa, Ryan, sadly,
you are in the Face Off chairs,
which means you'll have 15 minutes less
to complete your look today
Ryan, you had so much time left
If you would have used it,
you would've realized that you had time
to change the eyeshadow
It was too heavy and it was not '90s rave
Lisa, your look was too predictable
It gave me prom
instead of giving me '90s rave
[Maya] There's only one way
to beat the seat
Impress the judges in the creative brief
so that another MUA takes their place
in the Face Off elimination
So, guys, yesterday,
you worked for an iconic magazine
renowned for images
that will go down in history
Today, we want you to produce a statue
that shows us
how you want to be remembered
[Dominic] Your look could be
about your personal journey,
your current achievements,
or your future ambitions
[Val] You must include
the head and shoulders
and one 3D element in your look
Now, guys. Come on, be brave
And show us something
that we will never forget
Okay. Are you ready?
[all] Yes!
- Bring in the models!
- [Kris] Whoo!
[uplifting house music plays]
Hi! [laughs]
Step into my office
- I'm really excited for this
- Me too
- I won yesterday, so...
- Oh, did you?
- You're in the right chair. [laughs]
- Yeah!
MUAs, you'll have two and a half hours
to complete your look
Lisa and Ryan, I'll let you know
when you can start
The rest of you, your time starts now
- [Lisa mock groans, laughs]
- [Nancé] Okay
[Yong-chin] Oh, I like that one
I need to speed like Speedy Gonzales
[laughs]
This look only has three colors
So, it really is, like,
based around the line work
And I have to make sure it's perfect
[Maya] Hoping to avoid
a third week in the Face Off,
Yong-chin has designed
a look all about bravery
[Yong-chin] I want
to be remembered for being fearless
It's based off of, like,
these Celtic warriors
that would, like, go into battle
It's a combination of symbols,
like, overlapping each other
to create, like, my own coat of arms
[spacey music plays]
My mom's Malaysian
and my dad's from Scotland,
and I grew up in Glasgow
At school, I felt pretty different
from the other children
But my name is Yong-chin
I used to always have an anxiety
of saying my name
to people if they asked me
Now I love my name
I'm, like, really proud of it
My parents didn't have any money,
then had four children
That's definitely
where I get my drive from
They always, like, instilled in us
to do everything,
like, 100% to your best efforts
During COVID, there was nothing happening
So, I just started to, like, play
with makeup a lot more
And I started to really push
for it to be a full-time job
As a self-taught makeup artist,
I think you just have to be fearless
[pulsing music plays]
Oh, this is so scary
I hate this
[chuckles]
Awks. Awkies
- All right, Lisa
- Hello
- It is your first time in the red chair
- Yeah
I'm a bit gutted with myself, but I'm
just trying to put that out of my head
So, tell me about your look today
[Lisa] I want
to be remembered for, you know,
if I have a talent or skill or something,
actually, like, chasing after it
and reaching that potential
So, my look is inspired by glassblowing
I was trying to think of something
that's kinda plain to start with,
like sand is
And sand has to go
through intense heat and flames and fire,
and it comes out the other side
as something beautiful and with purpose
And if you complete it,
you'll be reaching your potential
- Yeah, exactly
- So it all makes sense, doesn't it?
[mimics Ryan's accent] Hi, love
You all right?
- Hi, love. I'm belting
- What's happening?
Is anything worrying you about today?
No? Easy-breezy Ryan squeezy
Yeah. We'll just see
what happens, won't we?
- Fine. Don't worry about it
- [laughs]
[gentle music plays]
[Nancé] This is definitely not my bag
Oh, really?
No. Prosthetics is not my bag
Oh, my God. I can't
[Dominic winces]
What you do is you put it on,
you then map it, you then take it off
That's how you do it
- And then you cut it
- Yeah
[Dominic] I think we're gonna lose an ear
Or an eyebrow
Okay. Oh, my...
[sighs] I want to start
I'm too bored stood here
Okay, Ryan, Lisa. You can start
- Yay! [laughs]
- Right, see you in a bit
[Maya] He's off
[upbeat disco music plays]
Right, then. Let's go, let's go
I hope today that Ryan brings
some precision to his work,
because so far,
I've seen a lot of big makeups,
but I haven't seen any precision
[Rachel] My look
is based on the seraphim angel
They're basically, like,
the highest-ranking angels in heaven
'Cause I grew up, like, going
to church and being a Christian,
I've always thought about heaven
and, you know, being a good person here
so I can have that "everlasting life."
So, this is gonna be based
off of the biblical description
of how they have, like,
this all-seeing eye and six wings
Thirty minutes gone, everybody
Three-zero, down
[Val] I think this
is the heart of the matter
- [laughs]
- The Tree of Life
[Dominic] Mm
[Val] Pumping inside
with heartfelt emotion
You're reading a lot into that
If there's ribs and there's a heart,
it could be offal
No, I think it's gonna be great
- This eye covering...
- No, "offal." Not "awful."
- Oh
- [laughs]
That looks like a dog bone
Close. Tree bark
Is it? And that...
I'm smelling fish. Is that that?
- That's latex. Latex stinks
- Oh, my goodness. It's potent
- [Kris] It's fishy, yeah
- Yeah
[Maya] Kris's look
features homemade prosthetics
and is inspired
by his connection to his homeland
The thing I wanna be remembered for
is being grounded
So, I wanted this to be
like a little love letter for Ireland
We're gonna have half the face
be like this bronze statue
Then you have the overgrowth and greenery
kind of growing up from the heart
'Cause, like, this overgrowth
is literally everywhere where I'm from
Back to the original roots
- Exactly
- See what I did there?
- Gotta be-leaf in yourself
- "Be-leave!" You got that from somewhere
- Just from here. [laughs]
- You're smart
[moody music plays]
Staying neat and within the line
is majorly important with this one
Like, be neat, but be quick
Don't mess about, me. I get it on
[chuckles]
[Nancé] Close your eyes for me
I'm just gonna map out
where I want this to go
Okay. Sorry
- No, it's okay
- Feel like I'm squashing your head
- [all gasp]
- Oh, that is incredible
- Shut up, shut up, shut up
- Three... Shut the front door
I'm creating two faces
because there are many aspects of me
that I'd like to be remembered by
So, the idea of having this face open up
and have this face come out,
and just letting people know
that I'm good at many things,
not just one thing
[lively percussive music plays]
I just hope she sticks down
those edges of the two prosthetics
- [Dominic] Yeah
- 'Cause at the moment, they're lifting
[Maya] Prior to the competition,
Nancé had never used prosthetics before
Prosthetic is not my forte at all
I'm doing it because I don't know how else
I can tell my story without not doing it
This is the way it'll hug your head
[Maya] Also using prosthetics
is special effects student Ryan...
[Ryan] I've put the cheekbones
at the side of the head
just 'cause it makes
the temples look larger
[Maya] ...who wants
to be remembered for his unique mind
[Ryan] The edges aren't the best,
but I'm not that bothered
because paint can cover any mistake
He needs to create a blend
from the skin to the prosthetic by using...
cotton wool and latex
[moody electronic music plays]
One hour to go
[Ryan] Look at me from here
Unreal
Oh, it's lifting. Ugh, gosh
Why are the odds never in my favor?
[chuckles]
I need to get a move on
'cause that hour's gonna go by very fast
[Lisa] Am I doing the right thing?
No, I'm not
I just have to follow my plan
[Maya] Lisa's banking
on her detailed color work
to help her beat the seat
[Lisa] I actually have watched
a lot of glassblowing art,
and there's always these rich reds,
yellows, and oranges
And then in my design,
I've added a bit of blue
'cause blues...
blues and purples are my color
So I feel I had to add
a bit of me in there as well
[Val] Oh!
I think Yong-chin
has really moved the goalpost
She's just floating around
and just giving that incredible line work
with such ease and grace
This neck moment is giving me life
- It's really, really...
- Symmetry
[mellow music playing]
[Kris] I've got, like, a really clean,
polished bronze effect
So now I'm just going over
and bringing out
kinda highlighted bits with gold
Then I'll go in with some blacks as well
to, like, recess certain parts
like it's been rained on for years
Okay
That'll do for now
Do you wanna fill in the ear now?
Yes, yes, yes
[Rachel laughs]
Rachel hasn't done a lot
in the time frame
The problem is,
all the makeup is just the face
- She's...
- She's still missing shoulders
If she fails, she's got nowhere to hide
She will be in the Face Off elimination
[Maya] With less than an hour to go...
[Rachel sighs]
[Maya] ...most of the MUAs
have started work on their finer details
[Ryan] These are the cogs I'm using
to accentuate the idea of the mind
and how the mind works
I see my mind as like gears turning
in different directions
and different ways
When it's finished,
I'll be very surprised
if I don't defeat the seat
- Hi, Lisa
- Hi, Hector
Where are you incorporating
your 3D element?
So, my 3D element comes in
with the dotting and the thread work
In the blown glass art,
there's a lot of dotting
and line work like this that goes...
When the glass is liquidy,
they wrap around
So, I think it works well with my look
- Well, good luck
- Oh, thank you
[suspenseful music plays]
Yeah. Let go
[laughs]
Oh, wow. Oh, my God
That looks really cool
[Kris] That looks very dark
with everything black,
but don't worry. We're gonna go
a little bit lighter. [chuckles]
Thirty minutes remaining
That's when you gotta
crank it up to gear six
You've got such big broad shoulders
- Thank you
- Gonna be here all day
[Ryan] All my 3D elements,
I think are popping
He doesn't have a vision
What I'm seeing here...
is a robot
[Dominic] The execution
of what he's trying to accomplish
is missing the mark
And that thread...
it just isn't doing
what he wants it to do
I want it to kinda fall down
The only thing that's stressing me out
is this part of the prosthetic
It... It keeps lifting
I'm gonna apply
some Pros-Aide cream inside
It needs to stick down, okay?
[chuckles]
It needs to
The idea is amazing
It's just the execution may not
live up to our expectation
Fifteen minutes remaining, guys
[Rachel] I'm trying
to sort out my wings now
[Nancé] Stay down, please
It'd mean absolutely everything to me
to get out of the red chair
I'm so not ready to go home yet
I just hope...
[chuckles] God, what is wrong?
[breathes deeply]
[sighs] I'm sorry
[tense percussive music playing]
I'm just adding some greenery
and some coffee and some plants
just to really bring in life
into the look
Please! Please stay down
I will hold this until they say,
"MUAs, brushes down." [laughs]
Five minutes left
Just getting on my last two wings
Keep it here, keep it here
[cheerful ethereal music plays]
Oh, gosh
Just little finishing touches
I think the shoulders
are fine as they are
You look sick
I'm actually buzzing with mine
Okay, time's up
Brushes down
Please take your models
next door to be photographed
Aw! You look insane
I'm just worried
[groovy percussive music plays]
I'm just getting a bit emotional
because this competition
literally means everything to me
I wanna prove to myself
and to, like, everyone
that stopping teaching and coming
into this was, like, the right decision
[Rachel] I'm happy with what I did
and I'm proud of myself
I feel like it would be such a shame
for me to screw up now
after the last, like, two weeks
have been amazing
[Yong-chin] It would mean a lot to me
to get good feedback on this look
I think my last two weeks
haven't went very well at all
I'm due some good news. [laughs]
Nancé, please step forward
[spacey electronic music plays]
How would you like to be remembered?
[Nancé] I'd like to be remembered
for being multifaceted
And a lot of the times,
I don't get to show it
So, being in this competition,
I'm pushing myself every week
to show something different
[Hector] I love your usage of color
The mascara. Those key elements. The lip
Love the lip
[Val] I think it's an incredible idea,
but did you clean the area first
before you laid down your prosthetic?
Oh, no
Hallelujah!
I forgot
You've always got to clean the area
that you're going to put the glue on
Otherwise, you always run
the risk of it lifting
But on the whole, a wonderful idea
Thank you so much
Yong-chin
[gentle melancholic music plays]
[Yong-chin] I wanted
to be remembered for being fearless
So, I thought about all
the Scottish warriors
and how they were always undefeated,
so this look was my creation
of my own coat of arms,
combining Celtic symbols and stud work
You are back,
and you are back with a vengeance
I get the Celtic story
I see the warrior
This is a masterpiece in makeup
Ding-dong, darling
- Ding-dong, you delivered
- Thank you
- [all applaud]
- Thank you
[uplifting music plays]
- Great job. Thank you
- Yeah
Thank you so much. Thank you
- [Kris speaks indistinctly]
- Thank you
- Give me five, girl
- [Yong-chin laughs]
Oh, I'm scared. [laughs]
Ryan, please step forward
[spacey music plays]
[Ryan] I want to be remembered
for my mind, essentially
I wanted to use things
like the cogs, the string, the color,
and the asymmetric prosthetic pieces
because I feel like the cogs in my brain
don't go together most of the time,
and that makes me me and unique
[Dominic] I love the gold
and I also really love the blue
It gives the eye things to look at
Your story's telling me
that you've got all these ideas,
but your cogs are really sporadic
- [Ryan] Yeah
- And really non-existent
It's like, "But that's not
what's going on in Ryan's brain."
- Yeah
- So, it's the translation
That's what you need to work on
I don't see a vision
I don't see a precise story
If I'm honest, I'm disappointed
Oh
[Val] Because we are Week Five
I was expecting more from you
I don't know if you've... grown
Okay
Rachel, if you can please step forward
[cheerful music playing]
[Rachel] My look,
it's inspired by the seraphim angel,
which is the highest-ranking angel
in heaven
No matter what I achieve in this life,
I'm thinking more about what
will happen to me afterwards
And hopefully,
I'll be in heaven with this high rank
I love these brush strokes
Sort of looks like a real painting to me
If I go...
to the ear,
this ear isn't finished
However, on the other side,
it is
Ear, don't know. Body, bare
I'm worried
Lisa
[hypnotic guitar music plays]
[Lisa] I want to be remembered
for reaching my full potential
So, to show this, I wanted
to be inspired by glass-blown art
So, the process of glassblowing
takes something
really boring and plain like sand,
puts it through intense pressure
to reform it completely
into something purposeful and beautiful
[sighs]
Lisa
Do you love it?
- I'm just obsessed
- Oh, thank God
I love your story
It translates so beautifully
because you've allowed
the quality of that white
to be almost translucent
so that we see the colors underneath
It's just genius
Try not to get emotional here, but...
it is insane
[sniffles]
Oof!
I love the color. I love the pattern
I love the movement
What a way of bouncing back
[chuckles]
Congratulations
Thank you so much
[hopeful music playing]
This is the glass ceiling of makeup
This is a modern masterpiece
- Definitely a ding-dong, darling
- [gasps]
- Definitely a ding-dong
- [all applaud]
- Unbelievable. I love it
- [laughs]
Thank you. Thank you. [chuckles]
[sobs]
Kris, if you can please step forward
[suspenseful music plays]
[Kris] The thing that I want
to be remembered for is being grounded
I'm from a very remote part of Ireland
During lockdown, I got the opportunity
to go back and live there as an adult
And being able to take in the beauty
really acted as a source
of therapy for me
So, this is kind of
my love letter to Ireland
So, as a makeup artist,
we are always seeking
for inspiration, right?
In this case, I had to fly all the way
from New York across the sea to London
to meet you, for you to inspire me
[gasps] Thank you
The fact that you made
your own prosthetics, for me,
is mind-blowing
This highlight...
I can see that from a mile
[chuckling]
Your model looks like a bronze statue
because you've got the balance
of getting that roughness,
but just the right amount of finesse
- Well done
- Thank you
- Ding-dong, darling. Ding-dong
- [all applaud]
- Ding-dong
- Thank you
It's amazing!
- Thank you
- Amazing!
[Kris exclaims]
Thank you, MUAs
Please take yourselves next door
whilst myself, Dominic, and Hector decide
who goes into the Face Off elimination
[suspenseful music plays]
[Lisa squeals and laughs] What?
I'm in the Face Off
- Oh, no
- [all chuckle]
[Maya speaks indistinctly]
Shall we talk about Ryan?
Do we think he's done enough
to beat the seat?
I have to honestly say no
[Dominic] There is very little
going on in this makeup
And that's what's so frustrating 'cause
there's so much going on in his head
It's already Week Five
It's a competition
So, what are you bringing to the table?
I think we're all in agreement
that Lisa has beat the seat
So, who's gonna fill that seat?
I think we need to talk about Rachel
There's no makeup on the shoulders
We've got one ear that's colored
and the other ear that's not finished
Guys, I think we also need
to talk about Nancé
[Dominic] I think she has got
a really unique thought process
What I always get from Nancé, though, is...
that she just gives us her first draft
when, actually, what we're looking for
is the finished item
It's a tough decision this week
[tense music plays]
The standard of the work in the room
this week has been outstanding
So, that's made this decision really hard
As you know, in this industry,
you're only as good as your last look
Lisa and Ryan, you found yourself
in the Face Off chairs today
Lisa, you've beat the seat
- [applauding]
- Congratulations
Ryan, your look didn't tell a story,
and the gold statue didn't have
enough dimension within its makeup
So, unfortunately, you'll be the first MUA
going into the Face Off elimination
Which means we have another seat to fill
[Dominic] This MUA had a great concept,
but there was some
fundamental makeup mistakes
Plus, it didn't fulfill the brief
The second MUA
going into the Face Off elimination...
will be Rachel
Thank you, judges
[Dominic] Thank you
[Yong-chin] Good luck, guys
Take deep breaths
I need to stay in this competition
To go home today
would be absolutely devastating
I definitely think
that I deserve to be here
I've worked my socks off
It's not over yet
[tense music playing]
[Maya] To level the playing field,
the MUAs will face off
over a set of identical twins
For your Face Off elimination this week,
we want you to create
a rectangular crystal blocked brow
To create the perfect gemstone brow,
start by marking the baseline
with a skin-tone pencil
Draw straight across to the lowest point
of the brow on the outside edge
Apply lash glue to this line
and once it starts getting tacky,
start applying your gemstones
to the brow, working from one brow
to the other in rotation
When the first line is complete,
repeat the process to the line above
Keep repeating this process
until the natural brow
is completely covered
and only the gemstone brow is visible
Symmetry and placement is key
Best of luck to both of you
You'll have 20 minutes
to complete your look
Your time starts now
[suspenseful music playing]
Okay. You're halfway through now
[both] Well...
[Dominic] What we've got
is the classic story
of The Tortoise and the Hare
We've got little pocket rocket Ryan,
who has just shot out the gate,
and it's, "tac-tac-tac-tac."
[Val] Yeah
[Dominic] Whereas Rachel
is being slow and methodical
We could end up with perfect placement,
but they haven't finished in time
[Dominic] I just don't know
who's gonna do it
Slow and steady or pocket rocket
Time will tell
[suspenseful percussive music plays]
Okay, five minutes left
Five, four, three, two, one
[sighs]
- Rachel
- Oh, God
[gentle music playing]
Conflab?
I think so
[sighs]
I got a take
because I've been counting the gems
On Rachel's, there is a perfect 15
all the way on both sides
Whereas on Ryan,
one side, there is 12
On the other side, there's 13
And there is much more hair visible
It wasn't rectangular, diagonal, perfect
[suspenseful music plays]
You were asked to create
rectangular crystal blocked brows
Now, precision was key
Rachel
You were methodical
You gave me placement and precision
Ryan, you jumped straight out of the gate
But you didn't deliver what we asked for
You created an uneven number,
where most of the rows consisted of 12,
except for one...
that consisted of 13 gemstones
So, unfortunately,
Ryan, you'll be going home
Please pack your kit
[sad music playing]
Aw
Go and smash it!
- [laughs]
- [Ryan speaks indistinctly]
- Aw, I love you
- Aw
This has been, like, one
of the best experiences ever
- You go
- Thank you
- You were so much fun to work with
- You've come so far
You did such a great job
I've learned so, so much
since I've been here
The critiques have been amazing
They've been so fair, as well
- Don't stop
- [Dominic] Don't stop
- [Ryan] I will not
- Slow down
- Slow down? Yeah
- But don't stop
[Ryan] I'm gonna go home now
and really refine myself
And I'm gonna be a powerhouse
So, we'll just have to see
[chuckles]
[driving electronic music plays]
- [squeals]
- [Lisa laughs]
What's good? Yes, yes, yes!
Yes, yes, yes!
- [Maya] Oh, my God!
- [laughing]
That was just so intense
This whole week has just been
such a roller coaster
I can't wait for the next week
And I'm just gonna work on everything
I'm gonna make sure that I give myself
so much time at the end
so that I can just look at the details,
because that's what
it's coming down to now
[Lisa] Well done
Get some rest, as next week,
you're going digital
[all cheer and laugh]
[groovy percussive music playing]
