sometimes, to, like, go a bit crazy with.

I love routine
and regimented time constraints,

so it's almost like
a mathematical situation.

Each layer of makeup
is like a section of time.

It's all about planning.

It doesn't go through my head
that I won't get it done, 'cause I will.

[Dolli] My third time
in the Face Off chair.

I'd be lying if I said
it doesn't faze me that I'm here,

but I just have to face it head-on.

[Maya] Working full time
alongside raising her daughter,

Dolli rarely gets time to herself.

My guilty pleasure is that I love
being alone, to sort of reset my mind.

Having time alone is very important.

But after a while, being alone
isn't actually a good thing.

I've created a concept
that's like a black hole,

so it's getting sucked in,
and I'm being consumed

by my own mind, basically.

So, I just wanna create
a look that is a feeling

rather than something quite literal.

-Do you know what my guilty pleasure is?
-Go on.

-Bag of chips and a toffee apple.
-[gasps]

-[Rankin] A toffee apple?
-You do... Yeah.

-I do like popcorn...
-Yeah.

...with Minstrels.

-[gasps] Yes! Yes.
-[Rankin] Oh!

I watch Murder, She Wrote.

-Murder, She Wrote?
-I love Murder, She Wrote.

Half an hour gone, two hours to go.

[glitchy electronic music playing]

Jack looks like... Their eyes are so big,
but they're very close together.

[Val] One is definitely bigger
than the other, Jack.

When are you gonna ask for me?

[Dominic] Jack needs you.

[Jack] I don't know if I like it
more rounded or more...

[Val] Craig's is looking really hot.

He's using cyan, magenta, and yellow,

which are process primary colors,

and that's really clever.

I want to get to something quite bright.
Just like how music

can make us feel a certain way
and it just makes me feel alive.

[Sophie groans] Damn it.

[Maya] Out to impress,

Sophie's painstakingly blending
each of the colors in her look

from dark to light.

The look mainly involves body paint.

If I have time,
I'm gonna add glitter and stuff,

but I don't wanna overdo it.
I always like to finish my look.

Do you think
Sophie's using the wrong medium?

[Dominic] Sophie's trying
to blend body paint.

What Sophie should have done is just
get all that paint on with a big brush,

then go around the edge
to build up that three-dimensionality.

That would've been quicker.

[Jack] I'm gonna just paint under here.

They are still on those eyes.
Where's the makeup?

[driving electronic music playing]

The hardest element of my look
is doing something black on a white base.

Everything will be seen,
and the details have to be right.

[Dominic] White is such
a challenging color to work with.

This runs the risk of being cakey base.

-There's no coming back from a cakey base.
-No, there is no coming back.

[Maya] One hour has passed,

and Jack has decided
to play their Val card.

Come on, let's move quickly.
So, tell me what you need to know.

I'm focusing a lot of time
on just my symmetry.

I'm not even knowing
if I'm getting it down right.

-Well, this look relies on symmetry.
-Yeah.

I think the eyes are too close together.

-Yeah.
-I would bring this white color out more.

-So you're getting more of this shape.
-[Jack] Okay.

Sweep it up and out, think of an egg.

-Yeah.
-Look, look. Look in the mirror.

-Yeah.
-There you go. Pull it around.

And you figure it out.

-[Jack] That's better.
-[Val] Much better.

But you gotta work quickly.
You've gone down the makeup hole.

You could get that black on quickly.
Why are you using a small brush?

Don't be doing little strokes,
get a big stroke in there.

Bish, bash, bosh.
You won the last assignment.

-Absolutely.
-Believe in yourself.

And get this done.

[ethereal choral music playing]

[Maya] Okay, one hour left.

That's an hour and a half gone.

[Sophie] Okay.

I've still gotta do all of the colors
I haven't done yet, which are the gaps.

I'm stressed I might not
get it done in time.

This could be incredible if she finished.

If she finishes.

[Maya] With the base complete,
Craig moves on

to creating jagged lines across the face
to symbolize music waves.

The waves need to flow
like the way music would flow.

I'm this close to the final.
I'm gripping it.

I need to get my other hand up there
and pull myself up.

I've never been brought up to give up.

I'm wanting to do,
like, my parents proud. You know?

I don't know why I'm getting emotional.
I said that, and it struck a chord.

I don't want to go home yet.

Hi, Dolli.

Hi, Rankin. Hi. [chuckles]

What techniques are you using?

Right now,
I'm doing the roots and the branching.

I wanted to create a feeling
of black holes just consuming me,

and I've got veins as well coming out
and consuming my energy.

-I was impressed you kept cool yesterday.
-Thank you.

It seems like you're doing
the same today, which is great.

Thank you.

[sighs heavily]

Oh, my God.
I'm just running out of brushes.

[Maya] Having a methodical approach
to makeup means Sophie has never yet

been tripped up by time keeping.

Oh, my God.

-Hey, Sophie. How you getting on?
-Oh, hi.

Trying to get color on,
running out of time.

You'd better speed up.

Yeah, I know, 'cause it will
really irritate me if I can't finish.

Good luck.

Thank you.

Why is that not working? [laughs]

Mmm!

[glitchy electronic music plays]

[Maya] Thirty minutes left now.

I don't know where to go from here.

I don't know where to go from here.

Oh, my days.

This is looking amazing.

I love that Dolli's using
a smaller brush to create detail.

[Rankin] It's got depth to it.

I'm definitely worried.
No one wants to go home. [sighs]

Jack's still not finished the eye.

[Val] They keep using a tiny brush,

and I said, "Why are you doing that?"

It's so frustrating.

[Sophie] It's ambitious,

but at this stage in the competition,
I have to be ambitious.

I'm worried
Sophie's gonna run out of time.

Ten minutes left, everyone.
Ten minutes left.

[Sophie] I'm running out of time.

I just need to work really fast, you know?

I hope it's strong enough
to get me out of the Face Off chair.

All of a sudden,
there's an electricity in the room.

You can really feel it.

They want to get to that final.

I just lost the brush I needed. Hang on.

[Jack] I was gonna do some tears,

but I don't have time
to be drawing those on.

One minute left.

[cheerful ethereal music playing]

I'm feeling nervous, because it's really
make or break from this moment.

You go from one extreme
to the other in this competition.

All right, time's up. Brushes down.

Please take your models next door
to be photographed.

[groovy percussive music playing]

[suspenseful music playing]

So, the first makeup artist
we would like to call up is Dolli.

[Dolli] My guilty pleasure is being alone,
but it can be detrimental sometimes,

so I wanted to create something
that looked like a black hole

to just show how this can take over me.

I love this. It's the one makeup look

that I'd definitely want
to have photographed.

-I think you've bounced back massively.
-Thank you.

The fact that you've only used two colors
is so brave in the semifinal.

Your line work is exquisite.

I'm so proud.

-Thank you.
-[all applauding]

[Dominic] Sophie. Come on up.

[gentle melancholic music plays]

[Sophie] My guilty pleasure today
was watching children's TV shows,

specifically Adventure Time.

I still watch it now
when I'm getting a bit overwhelmed.

[Dominic] My issue is
I don't see your story.

I don't see children's TV.
I don't know if this is semifinal level.

Were you happy with your end result?

-Um, no.
-Why not?

I think my initial design
was a bit ambitious.

I wanted to make it
a bit more of a personal thing,

'cause I haven't
really mentioned that yet. So...

[Val] Hang in there, girl.

Deep breath, Soph.

-Stay with me.
-[laughs nervously]

[sighs]

If I look at this angle of your model,
it's a work of art.

But then I come to this side
and I'm like, "That's not my Sophie."

You didn't have time
to perfect that there.

And I think that was your downfall, time.

Yeah. [exhales heavily]

[judges] Thank you.

[all applaud]

Craig.

Hello.

Growing up, for the longest time,

I would've just ran to the bathroom,
locked myself in,

just put my headphones in,
and dance and sing in the mirror.

I wanted to bring that as my base,

and the waves over the face
is like the waves of music.

The idea is amazing, colors are ace.

Very few makeup artists would have
the bravery to put them together.

-Nice one.
-Thank you.

I just love it.

[breath catches] I love it because
it's the most original makeup

in this room today.

I've not seen this before.

It takes a lot to excite me.

This really excites me.

You pull it off, it tells a story,
it's on a catwalk, it's in into editorial,

and it's a ding, dong from me.

-Thank you so much. That means a lot.
-Absolutely ding, dong!

-[all applaud]
-[Val cheers]

Jack, please step forward.

[Jack] I wanted to show that
my guilty pleasure was hiding in anime,

wishing that I could always be
a bit of an anime character myself.

And are you happy with your result?

-No.
-[Val] I think it's a good makeup.

But you're in the semifinal

in a room full of great makeup artists.

And I said to you, "Use a bigger brush."

And I walked away,
and you carried on with the same brushes.

-You gotta listen.
-[Jack] Absolutely.

[Rankin] I was very surprised
that you didn't get Val,

one of the best makeup artists
in the entire world,

to come in much, much earlier,

because you definitely went down a hole.

It felt like you were going round
in circles, literally, two circles.

-[judges] Thank you.
-Thank you very much.

[all applaud]

[Dominic] MUAs, thank you so much
for sharing your guilty pleasure.

If you'd like to go next door,
myself, Val, and Rankin

will be deliberating to find out which two
will go into the Face Off elimination.

[ethereal music playing]

[Dolli sighs happily]

[Rankin] Let's start with Craig.

It's fresh. I've not seen this before.

I mean, for me,
he's completely beat the seat.

Definitely.

[Val] Let's look at Dolli,

our other MUA who started off today
in the Face Off chair.

It tells a huge story.

Just fills me with so much joy.

This makeup I could keep
looking at forever. It's great.

Let's look at Sophie.

[exclaims] So close, but not close enough.

What this was today
was about time management.

She missed the mark.

It's so, so hard,
because there are parts of this makeup

where it's like a painting in a gallery.
How can you put her in a Face Off?

[sighs] It's incomplete.

Jack had a bad day.

We know that the blend
around this eye takes minutes.

It doesn't take two hours.

[Val] One lash is giving sad eye
much more than the other lash.

-Yeah.
-It's a lazy lash.

It just goes to show,
you're only as good as your last look.

It feels horrible
to be picking apart little things,

but we can only take
three artists into the final.

Two have to go
into the Face Off elimination.

Who's that gonna be, I wonder?

I think we know.

[suspenseful music playing]

-[Maya] Hello, guys.
-[Val] Hello.

Have you made a decision?

-We have.
-Yeah.

Okay.

Craig, Dolli, you started today
in the Face Off chairs.

Dolli, your look was original,
imaginative, and bold.

So, it's for that reason

that you absolutely beat the seat
to secure your place in the final.

Thank you.

Thank you.

So, Craig, your look blew us away today.

It was thought-provoking.

So, Craig, you've definitely beat the seat

and secured yourself a place in the final!

Thank you. Thank you so much.

Jack.

You did so well yesterday.
But today, your look didn't hit the brief.

You spent so long on those eyes,
to the detriment of the rest of the look.

So, you will be going
into the Face Off elimination.

[Val] Sophie.

Your look wasn't complete.

Time management was against you,

so you are also going
into the Face Off elimination.

Fair enough.

[Maya] Thank you, judges.
I'll bring them through.

[exhales heavily] All right, guys,
one of you won't be returning.

It's rubbish, but please say
your goodbyes, and I'll bring you through.

-[Craig] Love you so much. Take care.
-[whispers indistinctly]

Going into the Face Off elimination
and going against Sophie,

I feel like it's such a tough one.

We both really, really want this, so,

I think I'm gonna go in there
with all guns blazing.

I really want this,
and I have wanted it from the very start.

I need to prove that now.

[Maya] To create a level playing field,

Sophie and Jack will face off
over a set of identical twins.

For your Face Off today,

we want a full-face gradient,

from hairline through to jaw.

We want you to use two colors.

Black and one other color.

We want seamless, even, and consistent
blending from one color to the other.

In full-face gradient, I would start
by going in with the color first,

painting along the jawline,
blending up towards the nose.

Then, grab a bit of the black
and a bit of the color

and mix the two together,

painting straight across the nose,

blending down towards the mouth
and then up towards the brow.

Black is a very heavy color and it absorbs
all other colors you mix into it,

so you wanna leave the black
to the last minute.

The key is to spend most of your time
working on that blend.

[tense music playing]

All right. You're gonna have 20 minutes.

Your time starts now.

[suspenseful music playing]

[Maya] Five minutes gone.
You have 15 left.

-[Val] That's not what I was expecting.
-No.

They both went in
with the black straightaway.

-They made such a rod for their backs.
-I know.

[Dominic] They're gonna struggle to blend
a lighter color further down the face.

-We might get it at the knees.
-[laughs]

[Val] And we did say hairline to jaw.

It's neck and neck at the minute.
It could go either way.

[Maya] Ten minutes left now.

One minute left.

Three, two, one.

Okay, brushes down.

Conflab?

Let's go.

Both of them approached it
in the wrong way.

The worst way.

When you put black on the forehead,

you can't go anywhere with that
other than down,

so they both have
very big, black foreheads.

[Val] When I look at Jack's makeup,
I see a makeup in two halves.

I see black and green.

There is no gradation.

Now, they've done
a lovely job on the ears.

But we didn't ask for that.

When I look at Sophie's makeup,
I see a definite gradient.

I see black fading through deep red,

to red, to a paler red.

I really think
we've got an obvious winner.

I have to agree.

Have you made your decision?

We have.

Jack and Sophie,
you both started with the black,

which did create a rod for your own backs.

Sophie, you faded
to a sheer red along the jaw,

which actually gave you
more scope to create a gradient.

[Val] Jack, the blend
that you did create was too small

and only in the eye area.

This didn't give us a consistent gradient

from hairline to jaw like we asked.

So, unfortunately, Jack, pack up your kit.

You're going home.

Thank you.

[imperceptible]

I think feelings are so up and down,
but you know what?

I had a win yesterday.

You know, I would have loved
to have got to the final.

But to make it close enough,
I'm still proud of that.

I'm still proud of what I've done here.
Absolutely.

-Well done.
-Thank you.

-I got into the semifinals.
-You got to the semifinal!

You've just done a music video.

With Rankin!

-And he really enjoyed your energy.
-Yeah.

I'd be giving him a call a little bit
down the line. "Hey, remember me?"

-Absolutely.
-[Val] Yeah.

-Oh, my God!
-[Dolli] Yes!

[all exclaim and laugh]

I'm really happy. I am really happy.
I'm actually buzzing for the final.

It's just such a big deal,
isn't it? [chuckles]

[Maya] Well done. To the final three!

[Craig] Oh!

Get some rest in,
because next time I see you guys,

one of you is gonna become
the next makeup star!

Yes! [laughs]

[groovy percussive music playing]
