Glow Up: Britain's Next Make-Up Star (2019–…): Season 3, Episode 6 - Special Effects: Peaky Blinders - full transcript

The MUAs enter the world of special effects, creating looks from an iconic fight scene in Peaky Blinders. At Glow Up studios, they must impress with their 7 deadly sins inspired transformation. Covering a tattoo is the Face Off el...

[Maya Jama] It's time to Glow Up.

[funky percussive music playing]

-[Jack] Where on earth are we going?
-[laughing]

Today, the MUAs are entering
the world of special effects,

proving they can deliver
looks that pack a punch

on an award-winning crime drama series,

by order of the Peaky Blinders.

[Maya] Now on its sixth series,

the smash hit TV show Peaky Blinders

follows Birmingham's
most infamous criminal gang.

We're on holiday.

[Maya] The mash-up of early 1900s glamour
and mind-blowing prosthetics

is down to the makeup mastery

of Peaky Blinders' BAFTA-winning
head makeup designer, Loz Schiavo,

who has called the MUAs
to a leading makeup school

to see if they have what it takes
to work on her team.

Welcome, everybody,
to the world of Peaky Blinders.

-[applauding]
-[squeals] Oh, my God!

[Maya] They don't know it yet,
but the MUAs

are about to stare down the barrel

of one of Peaker Blinders'
iconic fight scenes.

The challenge is to apply

a prosthetic piece
that's gonna show the injury

that your actor has received
from this massive fight.

Peaky Blinders.
Oh, my God. Like, this is incredible.

It's just really crazy overwhelming
to, like, be in this environment,

because my dream job is
to do prosthetics on TV and film.

But I'm trying to just sort of stay calm.

The MUA that Loz decides
has created the most realistic look

will receive a bespoke masterclass

with both Loz
and the founder of this academy,

Oscar-winning makeup artist
Christine Blundell.

[all applaud]

Graduates from this school have gone on
to work with me on the TV series.

So, today, I am expecting high standards,

just like I expect
from my hair and makeup team on set.

Good luck. Let's go.

[Maya] For this assignment, the MUAs
must achieve two prosthetic looks...

-[glass shatters]
-[yelling]

[Maya] A scar from an old fight,
and a fresh wound

from a notoriously brutal
Peaky Blinders brawl.

[Loz] The scene I've given
the makeup artists

is when the Peakies go into the Eden Club...

[man] Come here!

...and they cause
a big fight with everybody.

[all scream]

Put some ice on 'em!

It's one of my favorites from Season Two.

But to master the art of prosthetics
is a hard thing.

[Maya] To arm them
with the technical knowledge...

Put the fresh wound here.

[Maya] ...Loz gives the MUAs
a quick prosthetics demo.

First of all, we're using an adhesive.

I need you to really make sure
that everything is glued down.

At this level of the competition,

we are expecting
a certain level of expertise.

These prosthetics have to look real.

[Loz] And just slightly overstretch it.

[Maya] Not only will the MUAs have
to attach their prosthetics faultlessly...

[Loz] The aim is to bleed the edge
and to make it look invisible.

[Maya] ...they'll need to match the piece
to their actor's skin tone...

[Loz] You're building up color,

and it just blends
the prosthetic and the skin.

[Maya] ...and add the blood work.

[Loz] Blood's not going to run that way.

It will be trickling down there,
down here, different directions.

[Maya] The second injury the MUAs need
to create is a six-month-old scar.

When you first get a cut, it's red, blood,

and then it starts
going really strong pink,

and then lighter, lighter, lighter.

Sometimes there's a bit of blue in there.

Just think about the story,

and make sure your story is on the face.

[Maya] The MUAs have two hours
until their screen tests...

[Sophie] God, I'm scared now.

-...and have each been assigned an actor...
-Hello, how are you?

-[actor] Hello!
-[Maya] ...a character brief...

"During the fight, your character
has been slashed with a knife."

-[Maya] ...and two prosthetics.
-[Ryley] My God. These seem so delicate.

-All right, your time starts now.
-[Sophie laughs]

Okay. So, let's get ready
to apply this first prosthetic!

Oh, I am petrified.

Today, our MUAs
have to create a new injury.

So, that's being creative, understanding
how the body reacts to an impact.

"Your character has been
struck on the head with a chair."

They also have to create
a preexisting scar.

So, that's understanding
continuity, realism,

and getting that scar
to match the photo exactly.

Yeah, I just don't wanna
get it wrong! Okay.

[Maya] For their fresh wound, the MUAs
first have to decide where to position it.

The fresh wound is,
once again, gonna be on the head,

but then the old scar
is going to be slightly more...

-[laughs] ...on the right side.
-This side. Yeah.

I was like, "What? Right side." Yeah.

[suspenseful music playing]

So crazy. First time doing
anything like this. [laughs]

Try me best.

[Maya] Ryley must recreate a scar

caused by a classic
Peaky Blinders fistfight.

So, that's here.

[Maya] And as a self-taught makeup artist,

this is her first-ever time
applying a prosthetic.

Gosh, I can't even get it open.
Not a great start.

[funky music playing]

[Ryley] All of my techniques,
skills, knowledge is all self-taught.

Just, you know, from my bedroom.
Tutorials, Google.

I do think
people underestimate younger people.

Because I'm 19 doesn't mean
I don't know what I'm doing.

I started at such a young age,
now I feel like I'm ready.

I am really determined.

And I will... If I'm very passionate
about something, I will just get it done.

I'm not really one to give up.

Oh, wow. It is so...

All right. [laughs]

Maybe... just above the brow?

Look towards me.

[Maya] Having won
two industry assignments already,

Craig is hoping to pull off a third.

He's been tasked
with a fresh bullet wound.

-The concentration levels are 100%.
-[Craig] Yeah.

-I'm sweating like a sinner in church.
-[Maya] Oh, my God.

-Let's look. What've you got so far?
-I've got my bullet wound here.

Wow. He's had a 'mare. Shot in the face.

I put it here, 'cause I felt like
if I was in a fight, and I had a gun,

I'd punch, punch,
but before he punched me,

I'd need to get the gun real quick,
and quickly shot.

When I quickly shot,
I'd probably just shot in the cheek.

-You seem to know a lot about fights.
-I'm not a Peaky Blinder.

But it's common to see
a fight where I'm from.

-Yeah.
-Nothing new.

But out of prosthetics,
whole other game.

I have a degree in prosthetics.

Right. So, this should not be
that difficult for you.

I'm not getting ahead of myself.
I'm rusty, haven't done it in a long time.

But I do understand
the basics of applying a prosthetic.

Maybe I should put it on the neck.
Or is that a bad idea?

[Maya] Another MUA who studied prosthetics
as part of their uni course is Sophie,

whose actor has been slashed
with a broken bottle.

Hello, prosthetics honey.
So last week, with the assignment,

-wasn't your best hour.
-No.

You redeemed yourself after
with prosthetics the next day.

And now we're back at prosthetics.

Don't say that, 'cause if I mess up,
then it's even worse.

[energetic new wave music playing]

Growing up, I think I was just drawn

to things that were
a bit weird and different.

I was a bit weird and different.
So I just sort of started watching

horror movies a bit too young,

and all sorts of weird videos,

and thinking, "I wanna do that,
'cause that's so gross."

Uni's really helped
develop my skills on prosthetics.

It's something that I'm so obsessed with.

It's like magic, isn't it?

When I create something that
someone else says, "That looks real,"

it's just so amazing.

I just don't see myself
doing anything else.

Yeah, I want to do this as a career.

Oh, my God. That's the glass
that I need to use, isn't it?

[whimpers]

Of course Sophie is competition,
this is her passion. She's so good at it.

But I really want to win.

I'm gonna throw myself into it
with the knowledge that I have,

and hopefully I have the best outcome.

[Maya] While most of the MUAs
have made progress with their fresh wound...

I'll just try and blend it. I need
to remember not to blend too close

to the actual prosthetic itself.

[Maya] ...Dolli is focusing
on the six-month-old scar.

Working from a photo of the injury
when it was new,

the MUAs will have to age the scar
and exactly replicate its placement.

I think the biggest hurdle
for our MUAs today is continuity.

Seeing that photograph of the old scar
is vitally important.

Everything needs to look
the same as it did before

and age with the program.

[Dolli] It's gonna be
on his cheek as well,

and he's had it for six months.

So, I have to make that picture there
look like it's been healed for six months.

[Loz] I'm worried
about Dolli 'cause, sadly,

she's put the wound on the wrong side.

She's put the continuity one
on the wrong side,

and that's a major, major flaw
because that would hold set up.

Okay.

The set would have to wait
for you to change it.

-Oh, my gosh, that's a big mistake, then.
-Yeah.

Close your eyes for me.

[Ryley] My gosh,
this stuff is so strange. [sighs]

[Maya] Once the MUAs
have their two prosthetics in place...

"Even parts, mix them together,
make a paste."

[Maya] Silicone gel can be used
to create further detail.

[Ryley] This is quite drippy and gloopy.

[intriguing music plays]

[Jack] Kind of making that ear
look a bit, kind of, sore.

So, that makes it look a bit swollen
and a bit battered.

[Maya] Dolli's using hers
for other reasons.

[Dolli] I wasn't able to blend the top,

so I'm going to add
another fresh knife wound

right next to my old wound.

You know, so...
Hopefully the judges don't notice.

Oh, and you're standing right there.
[laughs] You heard everything.

[Jack laughs]

Yeah. [laughs]

Makeup artists, we've had an hour.
So we have one hour left.

One hour left.

[tense percussive music playing]

[Maya] With the wounds in place,
it's time to add blood and bruising.

This isn't just about sticking on
a couple of prosthetics and job done.

It's understanding the bigger picture.

Kind of getting that depth in there now.
So, I'm making sure

that that real red tone
is coming through the middle.

[Dominic] That might mean
blood in the hair,

there's glass in the face,
a blood splatter, a drip.

It's about understanding how the body
reacts to different levels of violence.

I added some splatter techniques,
the blood splat when it hit the cheek.

Want this to be more dramatic,
a bigger wound.

I want it to be, "This is the focus."

[Maya] What do you think of Craig's?

[Loz] His application's brilliant.
The thing I'm slightly worried about

is he's got a big bullet wound
on the cheek.

Now, if someone had that big bullet wound,
that would really destroy...

-Half your face would be off.
-It would be quite full-on.

Craig needs a lot of blood.

-[mimics gunshot]
-Yeah, rather than something clean.

[Maya] As well as the blood work
for their new wound,

the MUAs need
to accurately age their old scar.

It's really important
to make it look realistic.

And I want them to turn it
into a six-month-old scar.

And they need to think
about healing process.

How deep was that scar?

I did his scar quite healed,
but still a little bit sore,

because he's always out
on the town fighting. So...

Because of that,
it's not going to heal as fast as it would

if he was a person who stayed at home.

[dramatic instrumental hip-hop playing]

Makeup artists, we have 30 minutes left.

Oh, my gosh.

Now I'm just building up that skin tone.
I need to get a move on though.

How's Ryley doing?

I just hope she goes into sixth gear now
and just gets all the color in.

-So she needs to speed up.
-Yeah, definitely.

-This is where it's hands-on.
-The fun bit.

This is the fun bit,
where you can just go... [mimics brushes]

-Just meld it all together.
-Mash 'em up.

-Definitely.
-Right.

[Maya] With time running out,

the actors get into costume
for final touch-ups

before the judges decide whose looks
would make it onto a Peaky set.

[Dolli] And then,
just put your head forward.

[Craig] I'm just adding
some wee bits of lumps into the blood.

It's all the fine details that,
you know, give kind of a wow factor.

Makeup artists, we've got 15 minutes left.
We've got 15 minutes left!

[Sophie] Oh, my God.
Where is everything? [chuckles]

-[Ryley] Jack, have you got the wet blood?
-There was some on the table.

-What?
-[Jack] I just put some in a little cup.

[exclaims] Where is it?

Wow.

I'm putting bits of fake glass around,
and then wherever they fall, they fall.

Makeup artists, time's up!

-Cool.
-[Loz] Let me take your actors through.

Thank you.

Cool!

Wow. Thank you so much.

[Craig] I want to prove to myself
that I am a prosthetic artist.

I have a degree in it,
so I wanted it to be perfect.

That scar, the old scar...
I did that so quick.

Impressing someone in the special effects
makeup, like, realm or industry,

for me, it's like the equivalent of...

someone's, like, favorite footballer,
like, complimenting them

on being good at football.
Know what I mean? It's hard to explain.

It's like you're waiting
for this validation.

It's a big deal. [laughs] Yeah.

[laughs nervously]

[suspenseful music playing]

-Wow, who's been in a fight?
-Amazing.

[Maya] First to be judged is Jack's actor,

who's been bashed over the head
with a stool.

What I love about it is
you can see where the impact

of the stool would have been.

You can see the blood,
it's congealed, and the hair's sticky.

I just love the way it sits.

One of my favorite parts of this
is the ear.

-Mmm!
-Yeah.

That looks really good.

[Loz] This is the old scar.

I feel that
the coloring's all the one color.

-[Val] It's too even.
-It's too even.

I would have made certain parts,
according to the picture,

different color,
to show that it was a deep cut.

So, moving on.

This is Dolli's actor,
who has been slashed.

When you look at the blending,
through here, of the fresh scar,

it's great.
And I think the coloring's good.

[Val] I think it's really good.

But, sadly, on this side
should be the old scar.

Oh!

[Loz] And the fresh scar's on that side.

-[Dominic] Oh, that's annoying.
-[Loz] Which is such a shame.

She's popped a bit
of silicone gel through here,

because she made a little boo-boo,
which is clever.

She's turned it into a scar.

And she's added that depth,
which is great.

So I think Dolli's done a great job,
technically.

But if we had brought the actor to set,
and we've got the wrong wound...

-[Val] Yeah.
-Oh, dear. That's a big no-no.

[Dominic] No.

[Maya] Ryley's Peaky Blinder
has been punched and thrown to the ground.

[Dominic] Mmm.

It's just too dry.
There's no blood coming down.

-And I guess it doesn't have depth.
-Mmm!

-[Val] It's too flat.
-[Dominic] Yeah.

The most realistic parts of this makeup
are where you see the shine...

-[Loz] Yeah. The ear. There.
-...on the blood pieces.

-Yeah, that feels real.
-[Loz] Yes.

-[Loz] And this is the old scar.
-[Dominic] Mmm.

-[Loz] The coloring.
-It's too orange.

Yeah, it's got a peachy undertone to it.

Almost quite tanned,
versus the more cooler, olive-y...

tone of the skin.

-[Val] That's such a shame.
-[Loz] It's such a shame.

So, this is Craig's actor
with... the old scar.

The placing's a little bit too high.

Should be a lot lower.

[Dominic] Yeah.

[Val] Right. I see that.

[Maya] For his fresh injury,

Craig's actor has been shot
in the face at point-blank range.

-He's blended this really lovely.
-Mm-hmm.

But, for me, that bullet wound
should have just...

[mimics gunshot] ...destroyed that face.

And just blood everywhere.

-You want to be seeing the inside...
-[Loz] Yeah.

[Val] ...the muscle,
the muscle texture, the fat deposits.

[Loz] Yeah, exactly.

This is Sophie's actor.

-[Val exclaims]
-He's been struck by a glass bottle.

That is so realistic.
Look at the glass. Look at the hair!

[Loz] Yeah. Definitely glass through here.

This was just one scar,

and she's just used the silicone

and just gone and made
loads of different cuts.

-So, where's the actual scar?
-It's just here.

-This bit through there.
-[Val] Oh, my...

[Loz] She's run it through
to the edge of the mouth.

Here we are with the six-month... scar.

So, the coloring, I think,
through there is great.

-The blending is not the best.
-[Val] No.

That's a shame.

Sophie was so excited
by what she was doing over here.

Yeah.

This was far more interesting
than the old scar.

[Maya] The judges must now decide
which MUA has shown the most skill...

Hello!

...and will receive training
from two of the biggest names

in special effects makeup.

You should all be proud of yourself.

Every one of you
did such an incredible job.

There was one look
that really stood out for me.

It was really... Told the story.

It was imaginative

and very, very clever.

-Sophie.
-[all exclaim and applaud]

[Maya] Yes!

-Well done, Sophie. Well done.
-Let's go for our masterclass.

[Maya] Bye! See you.

Have fun.

Bye.

Extremely overwhelming,
but in, like, the best way possible.

Sophie. I've seen your work.
It's stunning.

Let's get started.

[mellow music playing]

The hardest bit is making the edges flush,
because it's the edges we're gonna see.

-Would you go all the way up to the...
-I would.

It's every makeup artist's dream,
isn't it, to win an Oscar.

[laughs] So, to meet
someone who's done that

and to be told that,
you know, they liked my makeup...

Looking good from here.

Couldn't imagine
that ever happening to me.

There's no rule book.
Try to sort of step back

and just go, "Okay. I believe it."

I think I'll probably
get into bed and be like,

"Wait. Is this what's happened today?"

Like, that's insane.

[dreamy music playing]

[Maya] While one MUA basks in Oscar glory,

the judges must still decide
which two of the others least impressed

and will start tomorrow
in the Face Off chairs.

-We need to talk about Dolli.
-Yes.

Great blending, great color technique,

but it's unforgivable
to have the scar on the wrong side.

[Val] Ryley.

[Loz] The work she did today
didn't hit the mark.

There was that sort of like smudgy,
rouge-y thing on the chin.

[Loz] Yep.

[Val] And then
the six-month-old prosthetic,

and then the new one.
They didn't all sing the same song.

I really think we need
to talk about Craig.

Craig's didn't hit the brief, so I would
have to send his actor back to base.

[gentle music playing]

[Maya] The next morning
at Glow Up Studios,

and the MUAs are about to find out
the judges' verdict.

If their name is
on one of the two red chairs,

they're headed for the Face Off
elimination at the end of the day.

-[Sophie] Where are all the seats?
-Oh, thank God.

Oh! My God. [sighs]

Dolli, Ryley, you know how it goes.

Unfortunately,
you are in the Face Off chairs,

which means you'll have
15 minutes less than everyone else.

Ryley, as you can see from your picture,

the color matching
is a little bit off through there.

And this bit in the corner here,

it just looks like red eye shadow
with a little bit of blood on it.

The whole overall look
just looks a little bit unrealistic.

And, Dolli, as you can see, your old scar
has been put onto the wrong side.

-Oh!
-It's upside-down on that side as well.

The coloring, the blood,
the technique is great,

but, sadly,
I would have to send it back from set

as it's all about continuity.

Yeah.

Craig.

You were very nearly
in one of those Face Off chairs.

We felt that your look yesterday
was just a little bit safe.

Your actor had a bullet wound to the face.

Where's the blood?

You have to think bigger.

Right.

[Maya] The only way
for Dolli and Ryley to beat the seat

is to blow the judges away
with their creative brief.

MUAs, today we want you
to create an ambitious makeup look

based on one of the seven deadly sins.

We want you to use prosthetics.

We want you to think
about shape, size, texture.

MUAs, you're gonna have
two and a half hours

to get your models looking sinful.

Are you ready?

[artists] Yeah.

Bring in the models!

[bold electronic music playing]

[model] Hey.

[Maya] The MUAs have been allowed
to prepare for today's creative brief...

and have each been allocated
a model at random.

Dolli, Ryley, I'll let you know
when your 15 minutes are up.

The rest of you, your time starts now.

Off you go.

Right, do you mind
taking your T-shirt off?

[driving electronic music plays]

[gasps] Oh, God. All right.

[Sophie] So the look I'm doing today
is the deadly sin sloth.

The whole concept of,
like, laziness really irritates me.

I feel like each sin
has some specific colors.

Mine's yellowy-greens,
purples, like bruising.

If you sit and do nothing,
it's like you're rotting.

It's a very specific color palette.
I want to show I'm good with color.

The main prosthetics I'm doing
are around the eye.

That is a difficult area for prosthetics,

but it will give a good effect
if I do it well.

[gentle house music plays]

[Maya] Prosthetics graduate Craig
is indulging in gluttony as his sin.

[Craig] So, I'm just mapping
out the prosthetic

and seeing how it's fitting
with the model.

[Val] Ooh.

Father, I've sinned,
I've got a baggy throat.

[laughs]

Roald Dahl actually was inspired
by the seven deadly sins

to create the characters
from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

So I've created a character
based off 30 years after the ending,

and wanna show Charlie
when he's overindulged.

A bit of a... a gluttony character.

Oh, come on. I've never been
this agitated in my life!

It's never usually this bad.

It's gonna be fine.

-Ryley. How you doing?
-Hey!

Usually I'm more confident, but today,
I feel I really needed those 15 minutes

for the prosthetics, because they took me
a long time to do in the assignment.

Maybe the pressure makes me fight.

How does it feel being up against
Dolli again in the Face Off chairs?

-Your friend?
-Honestly, it is the worst thing.

I love everyone here,

but Dolli is my closest friend here.
It does sting a little bit more, you know?

All right, honey. Well, yeah. Good luck.

-I'll see you in a bit.
-Thank you.

[tense music playing]

-[Sophie] Sorry if my hands are cold.
-That's all right.

If you can keep looking straight for me.
Thank you, sweetheart. There we go.

I'm focusing on wrath
as my seven deadly sin.

I wanted to kind of put across my message
of how people are quite abusive, actually.

Why I can't walk down the street
without somebody spitting on me

or telling me that I look ugly
or I'm atrocious.

So, I really wanted
to put my wrath out there.

So, scary mouth.

I've definitely given myself
quite a bit to do today.

Lots of eyes. Mouths. 3D sculpting.

Over the last couple of weeks,
Jack has used prosthetics

in a number of their looks.

So, I'm hopeful
that Jack's gonna do well today.

[Jack] I love that this moves. [exclaims]

I'm agitated. I just wanna start
because I've got so much to do.

Okay! Dolli, Ryley, you can start now!

Run, run, run!

[Maya] If Dolli or Ryley impresses
and beats the seat,

then another MUA will take their place
in the Face Off elimination.

-[Ryley gasps]
-[both laugh]

My gosh! Oh, my gosh.
I've used way too much.

So, the look I'm doing today is a cartoon,
kind of, interpretation of lust.

It's inspired by the likes
of Betty Boop and Jessica Rabbit,

which are very highly sexualized
cartoon characters.

Let's just see how big these are.

Ooh! These are...

[chuckles] Oh, my gosh.

Oh, my God. They're huge.

[Maya] When working with prosthetics,
it's important to adapt the pieces

to fit the canvas.

[Ryley] I need to make an eye.

It's not going to work.

Feels like Ryley's having
a little bit of a panic.

Oh, my gosh.

I thought these were the smaller horns.

I've got massive horns.

And I was planning to do it over the eye,
then a brow, then two small horns.

These are absolutely massive.

[sighs] Oh, my gosh.
I thought I had smaller horns.

I have to change my whole look.

She just needs to stay calm,
stay focused.

Add some... Oh, my gosh. I'm so sorry.

-It's okay.
-Oh, my gosh. I'll just wipe that for you.

-[laughs]
-Yeah.

[Sophie] Okay. I'm just gonna go for it.

[Val] Sophie. Straight over the eyes.

Bish, bash, bosh.

[Sophie] Oh, my God.
This is stressing me out.

[Maya] Prosthetics fan Sophie is also
having trouble adapting her eye piece

to create the illusion of sunken sockets.

That piece of prosthetic is over the eye,
and that's not supposed to be there.

I would have taken that out beforehand.

[Sophie] What I should have done
was cut that bit out, and I didn't.

[Sophie] Mmm.

Obviously, I'm such an idiot. Oh, well.

I got a bit confused. I've never done
around-the-eye prosthetics,

it's still something new for me.

Also, it's impossible
to cut the other side now.

That's what I think.
Unless I put my fingers...

But I just don't want to do that,
I'll have to blend it.

[Maya] Which means dissolving it
with solvent close to her model's eye.

[Sophie chuckles nervously]

You have to be so careful around the eye.

-Sorry.
-It's fine.

And it's such a dangerous area.

Okay.

Is it stinging?

A little bit.

What I would have done
is glued under here first.

Try to bleed as much as you could,
take that eye bit out,

and then flap it over
and bring it over the top.

It's so horrible doing around the eyes.
I'm never doing this again.

It's better.

In the makeup world,
this is nail-biting stuff.

-There we go. Yeah.
-Okay.

Half an hour gone, everybody.

Two hours left.

[Maya] To convey wrath,

Jack has chosen to add
a prosthetic mouth to the model's cheek.

This prosthetic's quite thick,
actually, the latex.

So it's taking me a little bit more
to blend out those edges.

God, this piece.

She's a hefty piece.

[Maya] Also adding human features
in unconventional places is Dolli.

-I've got my eye on you, Dolli.
-[Dominic chuckles]

[Dominic] Oh, that's weird.

This eye is really eerie, isn't it?
When you keep looking at it.

Eyes on the prize.

Talk me through your sin.

So, my sin today is envy,
and I just created a story in my head.

When I think of someone envious,

they always have
their eye on other people.

So, over time, she's developed these eyes.

Not every day you go into work
and come back with extra eyes.

-[model laughs]
-Jeez.

[Maya] While the other MUAs are embodying
their deadly sins with abstract looks,

Craig is aiming
to literally replicate gluttony.

[Craig] I do have a degree in prosthetics,
so I need to, like,

show that I'm good at this.

[Maya] Wow. Look at that.

-[Craig] She's thick.
-That is very thick. Ugh!

It's almost like, if you closed your eyes...

-It's real?
-Yeah.

Sorry. I was way too into that.

Taking on the judges' feedback,
are you gonna do anything different?

I'm gonna make sure
I go big and don't play it safe.

Hopefully today,
I show them something a bit more mad.

Craig got a very stern warning

from Queen Val about playing it safe.

I've spent a year eating chocolate,
and my chin is well full.

Thirty years, I would expect it
to be right down...

I'm really excited to see
how you'll make this slim face massive.

Yeah. Me, too.

I feel like I like this amount of texture,

because once I kind of add
that scabby blood in there as well...

[Val] At the moment,

Jack has not worked
with any of the model's own features.

[Dominic] No.

We need to see the model
and the prosthetics become one.

And at the minute, it looks like a model

with three prosthetic pieces
stuck on her face.

[dramatic music playing]

One hour gone!

I'm just try... I'm trying, man!

I wanna nail the hair
and the coloring of the face as well.

Ooh! That's when we start getting color.

This is where it gets to be really fun.

Yes, so I am underneath a time pressure,
but I just have to keep working fast.

[Maya] Whilst the others move on
to their color work,

having chosen to use six prosthetics,
Sophie is still applying her pieces.

[Sophie] I'd normally be,
like, painting it now. [exhales]

When it comes to painting, I'm literally
gonna go like lightning, I swear. [laughs]

Sorry. I'm just, like,
pressing into your neck.

It's all right.

-[Dominic] Ooh!
-[Val] She's put some lashes on there.

[judges exclaiming happily]

-[Loz] I love that.
-[Val] Yes.

[Loz] I love that.

-Let's see if that works.
-That looks really good.

-That looks weird, doesn't it?
-How's it going, Dolli?

Oh, my God, that looks so good.

Wow!

-I'm gonna paint your ears. That okay?
-Go for it.

-Yes, of course it is.
-Okay.

Tomato-y.

[Val] The Devil Wears Prada.

-[Dom laughs] The Devil Wears Ketchup.
-[Loz laughs]

Okay.

Oh, my gosh. This is so scary. [whistles]

[intense electronic music playing]

[Sophie laughing] I'm painting
the face very quickly.

I'd probably spend
a bit more time on this normally, but...

I'm running out of time,
and there's a lot more to do.

So, it's just a bit stressful.

All right. You have half an hour left.

Only 30 minutes.

[Ryley sighs] My gosh.

Okay, I'm thinking,
do I keep the lashes on or off?

-I'm not gonna say anything. [laughs]
-I don't know.

-[Dolli] If I take it off...
-[Val] Oh, no.

[Loz] She's pulling up... Ah!
Did you see that pulling off?

Oh, my... gosh!

[Sophie] Ugh! That's disgusting. [laughs]

[Val] So, what are they?
What's this one down here?

It looks like
some kind of pustule eruption.

This is the first time
I've looked at prosthetics

and been like,
"That's actually disgusting." [laughs]

I love how Ryley has incorporated
some of Val's personal wardrobe

in her look.

You're only jealous.

Ten minutes left.

This is your final ten.

Ten minutes left. [laughs] Okay.

[cheerful ethereal music playing]

-[Maya] Look at that.
-Look.

Real chocolate?

-Yeah, cooking chocolate.
-Oh, my God.

All right, everyone! Time's up!

Brushes down.

Please take your models next door
to be photographed.

-Well done, Dolli.
-Thank you. Well done as well.

[driving electronic music plays]

[suspenseful music plays]

Dolli. Please come forward.

[Dolli] So, for my concept,
I wanted to do envy.

I thought about a woman
who keeps looking at others,

and over time, she develops these eyes.

One of the punishments for envy in Hell
is being drowned in ice-cold water.

I really love the concept.

And I can see the wet skin,
that sort of gloss.

That pea-green against the violet
creates this cool coldness.

I have to be honest, though.
The attention to detail is lacking

from what I would expect
from a makeup by Dolli.

The eyeliner's not great.
The brows are a bit crusty.

It's things like this we shouldn't be
seeing at this point in the competition.

Okay.

I'd have liked if all of the eyes looked
like they belong to the same person.

So, great story, great idea.

For me, not executed well.

-Thank you.
-[Val] I'm sorry.

Thank you. The next person is Craig.

I was inspired by gluttony,

and my concept actually came
from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Where's the fat?
Where's the fat, fat, fat?

[Craig] Yeah.

Little tricks that you could have done,
like over here on one of the shelves,

there's some sort of, like,
little ping-pong balls.

You could have stuck two of those inside...
In both cheeks. And then...

I can see you've done the mottling
around the cheeks, which is great.

I would've loved to have seen
a big prosthetic cheek...

-Yeah.
-...to meld into here.

Thank you very much.

[Val] Sophie.

[Sophie] I picked the deadly sin sloth.

I was trying to represent
the rotting, decaying disgustingness

that I find in being like that.

And didn't you do it well?

The makeup and the prosthetic work,

together, are absolutely flawless.

-Seamless.
-[laughs]

I thought it was absolutely incredible.

Thank you.

What I love... If you go into these sores,
you've colored them brilliantly.

You've made it really juicy and wet.

I just think it's great.
I couldn't have done any better.

All I can say is I will have you
on my team any day, honestly.

-Oh, my God.
-Congratulations.

[all cheer and applaud]

[Sophie laughs]

[squeals and chuckles]

Jack.

[Jack] I really wanted to use the anger
and the wrath that's inside of me

to show the piercing eyes of people,
you know, staring at me,

and the mouth with the awful teeth

and the horrifying words
that people say to me.

[Dominic] I love the idea
of the wrath that you get from,

"Why are you staring at me?"
And I feel that from your story.

The reality of what I see in the makeup,
though, is very disjointed,

because you haven't incorporated
the model's features.

Therefore it feels disconnected
and like she could just peel it off.

-Thank you very much. Thank you.
-[all applaud]

Ryley, please come forward.

[Ryley] The sin I chose today was lust.

So, how did you feel about your horns?

I realized I'd picked a pair
that were a lot bigger than I thought.

You didn't think
about cutting them in half?

-No... Oh!
-[Val] You could have cut half of them.

That's not saying
"vinyl, wet, hot, sexy" to me.

I'm not getting lust.

What does a lustful eye look like?

Well, to me, from a beauty aspect,

it would have been
like some sort of smoky eye.

-Big lashes type thing.
-Mmm!

Yeah, yeah. You know...

[mocking] "Yeah, yeah."
You know what I'm gonna say. No.

I was too scared
to go down a beauty route.

[Dominic] I know that prosthetics
isn't your thing. I know.

And I'm gonna give you all credit
for doing things that aren't comfortable.

We have seen incredible makeup from you,
both creative makeup and beauty makeup,

but this is neither.

But thank you.

MUAs, thank you for sharing your sins.

If you'd like to go next door,
myself, Val, and Loz will be deciding

which two will be
in the Face Off elimination.

[Sophie] I'm just really happy
of Loz's feedback. That meant a lot.

I hope she was being serious
about me working on her team,

because I would genuinely like...

That's what I want to do,
and I did really try to impress her today.

[Val] Let's start with Ryley.

I definitely don't think
she's hit her brief.

It's Halloween-y more than lust.

It's quite childlike.

So, shall we look at our second MUA
that's in the Face Off chairs?

Dolli.

The prosthetics were put on really well,

but the prosthetic eyes
belong to a different character.

She hasn't decided to make them up.

I don't know whether she's done
enough to beat the seat,

but I do think we need to talk
about another MUA.

-I think we need to talk about Jack.
-[Loz] Yes.

They didn't know when to stop,
and they kept going and going and going,

and then it turned into this mask.

Yeah. I mean,
if doing too much was a sin...

Yep. Doop!

We should also talk about Craig.

[Val] I mean,
you're just not getting "fat."

[Dominic] He kind of gives us
a bit of a top line,

but he doesn't dive deep enough
to pull out all the magic,

and we do look for magic.

[suspenseful music playing]

So, Dolli, Ryley,

you started off today
in the Face Off chairs.

Ryley, the concept was too literal
and didn't translate to your model's face.

And it's for that reason,
unfortunately, you didn't beat the seat.

You'll be the first MUA
going into the Face Off elimination.

Dolli. We really liked
the story behind your look.

But you lacked the finer details.

So, unfortunately,
you didn't beat the seat,

and you will be going
into the Face Off elimination.

Thank you, judges.
I'll bring them through.

-Thanks.
-Thank you.

[exhales heavily] I'm sorry.
Dolli, Ryley, you gotta say your goodbyes.

One of you won't be coming back.

[gentle piano music playing]

[Dolli] Ryley's like my little sister,
like, honestly.

I know she's gonna fight,
and I'm gonna fight, and...

[sighs] Whatever will be will be.

It's okay, it's okay.

[Ryley sobs]

I knew I'd be in the Face Off,

so that's not the shock,
that is not the reason I'm upset.

The reason I'm upset is 'cause
I'm going against my closest friend here.

Um... [sobs] So it just makes it
ten times harder.

[Maya] To decide
which MUA is going home today,

Dolli and Ryley will face off
over a pair of identical twins.

For your Face Off today,
we want you to cover tattoos.

We want the stars on your models' forearms
to disappear completely,

leaving realistic, natural skin.

We want to see flawless blending,
natural-looking pigmentation,

and absolutely no visible tattoo.

Even though one of you
has a tattoo that's larger,

the other has double lines,
so it really is an even playing field.

When covering a tattoo, less is more.

Start by color-correcting the tattoo

with a color
that neutralizes the tattoo ink.

Then go in with full-coverage foundation.

Stipple the color in
so that you have no hard edges.

Now you've gotta bring your skin to life

by bringing in some undertones,
like blues and pinks.

It's all about finesse.

Voila. Tattoo's gone.

All right. Wish you the best of luck.

You're gonna have 20 minutes,
and they start now.

[suspenseful music plays]

All right, that's five minutes gone.

You have 15 minutes left.

-Wow.
-Well, that's very interesting.

Yeah.

[Dominic] What was difficult to watch was

Dolli go straight in
with the green color-corrector.

Green-blue. I don't get it.

It's so weird,
because when you neutralize,

you use the opposite color
of the spectrum. Not green.

No, but however...

However...

[Val] Ryley went in
and picked up the right color,

-and then put it...
-[Dominic] Everywhere!

[Val] ...all over everywhere.

You're just not going to be able
to match that color to the real skin.

-No.
-It's just gonna look like a splodge.

-One's gonna look green...
-One's gonna look orange.

I think we better get back in there.

Five minutes to go, guys.

One minute remaining.

Brushes down, please.

Okay. I'm sure
you want to take a closer look.

-Absolutely.
-Yes, please.

[ethereal music playing]

Dom. Conflab?

-I think so.
-Let's go.

-It is so to the edge.
-[sighs]

[Dominic] Neck and neck.

-I think it's Ryley.
-I think it's Dolli.

We asked for natural-looking,
realistic skin.

[both] Dolli.

[Dominic] Then we asked
for flawless blending.

[both] Ryley.

We then asked them to give us
natural-looking pigmentation.

-Dolli.
-Ryley.

-So, it's literally neck and neck.
-[Val] Neck and neck.

Okay. Well, then, let's bring it down
to the final piece of criteria.

We asked for no visible tattoo.

[suspenseful percussive music playing]

All right. Have you come to your decision?

-We have.
-We have.

[Ryley exhales heavily]

[Dominic sighs]

This has been the hardest decision
we've had to make so far.

Dolli, you created absolute realistic skin

with no visible tattoo.

Unfortunately, it comes down to coverage.

Ryley, we could still see
some of the tattoo coming through.

I'm sorry to say
you'll be packing your kit and going home.

Thank you.

[Dolli sobbing]

[Ryley] Well done.

I'm feeling great.
[laughs] It sounds awful.

Like, obviously,
it's sad to be leaving everyone,

but at the end of the day, I've had such
a good experience in this competition.

I've learnt so much.

Thank you.

I made it to week six. I've done
some incredible, life-changing things.

This is right. It feels right.

[mellow electronic music plays]

-[Maya] Dolli's made it.
-[Sophie] Oh, my God.

Oh, my God. Oh, my God.

[Dolli] I'm so happy to still be here.
Like, I can't believe I'm in the top four.

It's just so nuts. I want to pinch myself.

I think Ryley is an amazing artist,
and the world's her oyster now, you know?

I'm just so happy I was able
to experience this with her.

We've got four incredible artists
in the semifinal.

-We're gonna put them through their paces.
-Oh, yes.

[groovy percussive music playing]
