Glow Up: Britain's Next Make-Up Star (2019–…): Season 3, Episode 5 - Online Fashion Editorial - full transcript

The 6 remaining MUAs are asked to do the make-up on a photo shoot for global online retailer ASOS. The Creative Brief is to create a look that is out of this world. The eliminator is a structured glitter eye.

[Maya Jama] It's time to Glow Up.

[dreamy house music plays]

[Craig] You excited for today?

I hope it's fashion.

-Me, too.
-[Craig] Yeah, me too.

We all know I can't help
but do beauty. [laughs]

-We haven't done anything fashion-related.
-No.

I'm kind of excited now,
little bit scared.

For this week's assignment, the MUAs
have to bring out their best outfits,

as they'll be working

for the UK's largest fashion
and beauty online retailer.

-Hello. Morning.
-[Craig] Hi.

[all artists greeting]

All right.
When it comes to online fashion,

it doesn't get bigger than this.

I'd like to introduce the lovely Vanessa,

who's the design director
for online global retailer ASOS.

[all gasp]

-Oh, my God. Hi.
-[applauding]

[all exclaim]

[bold hip-hop plays]

[Maya] Since its launch 20 years ago,

ASOS has become one of
the biggest fashion websites in the world,

attracting up to 230 million visitors
a month.

We're authentic, brave, and creative.
It's all about giving people

the confidence to be
whoever they want to be.

[Maya] Over the last 13 years,
Vanessa has seen the company grow,

from selling gorgeous garms
to accessories, and now beauty,

the brand's fastest-growing range
and the focus of today's assignment.

Today, you'll be working
on a fashion and beauty video campaign.

The video will be online and will go out
to our 22 million social media followers.

Now, as this is a social media campaign,
you're gonna have to think really hard

on how your look
will work on a small screen.

[Maya] Unlike ads on billboards
or in magazines,

social media campaigns have less
than a second to grab users' attention.

But for ads that stop the scroll,
sales are just one click away.

Your shot will feature
the model using mascara.

Only one look's gonna be used today.

But that look will make up
the first shot of the campaign.

So it must grab
the attention of the viewer

to stop them from scrolling past.

Oh, my gosh.

The assignment today is crazy.
They're just getting bigger and bigger.

When they say "massive online retailer,"
we know. [laughs]

We shop there, too.

[driving electronic music playing]

[Maya] For the winning MUA,

today's campaign
will bring the biggest audience

a Glow Up assignment has ever seen.

This is massive.

Twenty-two million followers?
I'll have a piece of that, thank you.

A social media campaign
has to stop the viewer in their tracks.

[Maya] Each MUA has been allocated
one of the models from the campaign.

Hi.

[Maya] And with just two hours
until the shoot, they need to get moving.

So, this will be, like,
a shot from shoulders up,

of you, like, applying mascara.

The brief is "Luminate."

So, I'm looking
for a creative, polished look.

It needs to have glowing skin,
and I need a shimmering eye.

It needs to inspire our customer
but also be relatable.

We want our customer
to want to replicate it at home.

I have an idea
of what they're looking for.

This is like your everyday girl.

So I'm probably gonna do
a really bronzed, sun-kissed look.

I'll definitely do a nude lip
or a glossy red,

but I'll decide at the end.

This is not about a smoky eye,
this is not about a bold lip,

this is about mascara.

So we need to see that product in action.

[Jack] I'm gonna focus on the eyes.
I'll make them really fun.

Quite exaggerated.

So, I feel like
I really wanna tell the story.

You're going for an evening dinner,

but you might be hitting the club
afterwards, or going for a cocktail.

[Samah] The story is natural beauty.

Giving her that foxy eye,
the beautiful, flushed skin.

I'm feeling confident.
I do have a good understanding on skin.

So...

I'm hoping it comes to... magic! [chuckles]

[Maya] Samah has worked
on a makeup counter for nine years.

Average day in a beauty counter,
you do sometimes get tricky customers.

But I always turn that frown
upside down, you know?

When people meet me,
I don't look like a typical makeup artist.

I'm always covered.

You can't see no hair, babes.
Sorry. [laughs]

A lot of the time, people think
because you're a Muslim female,

you should be oppressed
or you shouldn't have a personality,

and I'm like, "Babes,
there's more to me than my hair, my body."

Don't judge me for this.
Judge me for this. Okay?

Thank you. [laughs]

We need to make sure
the skin is really clean

before going in with anything else.

[Maya] Samah's not the only MUA
with a background on the beauty counter.

Let's get the blood flowing in the skin.

[Maya] Craig, Dolli, and Jack
have also worked as MUAs in stores.

I'm gonna curl the lashes
and prep the skin.

I feel like Dolli would
have this in the bag.

This is absolutely up her alley.

I feel like she's definitely one to watch.

Hello, Dolli.

-Hello, Maya.
-You happy about this brief?

Yeah, I am. I just want to do it justice

because everyone knows
this is what I enjoy doing.

I was gonna say,
you're a beauty counter lass.

-Yeah.
-Do a lot of people ask for the glow?

Yes, everyone.
If I don't show myself in this,

I'll literally cry myself to sleep.

-So... [laughs]
-No!

But, yeah, I have to impress
in some sort of way.

[poppy dance music playing]

Gorgeous.

Just to let you know, the mascara
needs to be perfect in your look,

because on the actual shoot,

the model is just gonna be
using a dummy wand.

Okay.

[Sophie] I'm just gonna go straight in.

[Maya] Unlike the other MUAs,
Ryley and Sophie have never worked

on a beauty counter before.

[Sophie] I have an idea
in my head of what I want to do.

ASOS is a very, like, youthful brand.

So, I'm trying to do a look

that's more like going out
at night, smoky.

I just want it to be bold enough
that you can actually see it on a phone.

[Maya] How's Sophie getting on?

She just went straight in for the eye.
Like, she went pretty bold really quickly.

-It reminded me of an Ibiza dancer vibe.
-Yeah.

[Vanessa] Little bit worried
it'll be a bit too theatrical.

She's just gonna have to know
how to turn it back.

Yeah, that's so much better.

-Hello, Craig.
-Hello.

Look at the base already.

-Do you like?
-So good.

Well, this is my job in everyday life,
so it'd be a bit worrying if I couldn't.

As long as you don't make it look greasy,
oily in the wrong areas, but,

so far so good.

[Maya] Craig's love of makeup has
always covered a broad range of styles.

[Craig] My studies
at London College of Fashion

was makeup, hair,
and special effects makeup

for performance.

So, I was learning
all of that Monday to Friday.

At the weekend, I had my retail job,
which is in beauty glam makeup.

So, I was learning both worlds,

and to merge them together
was so exciting.

I could do, like, a pretty girl all glam,
and then have her throat slit,

and that was just exciting for me.

Towards me.

Everyone, you've had half an hour.

I need your models ready
in an hour and a half.

[gasps] What? [laughs]

[Maya] Used to doing looks on herself,

influencer Ryley knows exactly
how to draw an audience to social media.

Okay, it's a little bit orange-y.

Do I wanna...

[Maya] But unfamiliar
with working on models,

matching skin tone has been a struggle
for Ryley throughout the competition.

Dolli, how do you think
it's going for me with the color match?

Because thing is, for me,
in person, it looks one color,

but when the model goes close
to the mirror, it's a different color.

You should go
an even more yellow concealer.

When you do the bronzer, it'll level out.

-Really?
-Yeah.

Okay.

[sighs] I've just powdered.

So, I don't really know
if it's wise putting that on top.

Oh, my gosh.

[tense music playing]

[Maya] While Ryley gets stuck on skin,
Dolli's moved on to the next step.

So, I'm definitely gonna do, like,
a bronze shimmer on the eyes,

and maybe, like, a lighter color
in the center, so sort of like a halo eye.

How about Dolli?

So Dolli, she had a brilliant start.

All the angles was just hitting
in the right place.

At the moment, though,
the eye's looking matte.

But it's got potential.

-[Maya] Good starting point.
-Yeah.

[funky synth music playing]

-[Vanessa] Hi, Craig.
-Hiya.

-How you doing?
-Doing well, I think, so far.

The vibe I'm going for is Naomi Campbell
after-party on a runway show. You know?

-You've thought about where she's going.
-Yeah, exactly.

So, I'm creating an eye shape
off the makeup now,

'cause when the model looks down,
we've got that really nice snatch.

I'm gonna go in with a glowy pigment

and carve that kind of shape
again inside it.

You'll see the mascara bounce off
the color underneath so it's not too dark.

Obviously, it's the mascara we're trying
to sell so we want to see it.

You've got one hour left.

I'll need your models in one hour, please.

Cool.

[suspenseful music playing]

For me, if the mascara is not good
in the photos or video,

why am I gonna buy it?

So, I'm pulling her lashes outwards

so they give her more of, like,
a pulled, tapered-eye kind of effect

so she can still work with her angles.

So, I'm actually just kind of doing
a liner. Like, a nice, winged liner.

Now I feel like that's too light.
[laughs] You see what I mean?

So, a little bit worried about Ryley.
She needs to make her look bolder.

[Ryley] Oh, my gosh.

Is this shimmer?

-[model] Should be matte.
-"Translucent setting powder." Glow?

I'm just trying to powder the areas
that might get a little bit more shiny,

and I've been using a shimmer powder,

which really just contradicts
the whole process. So...

Yeah. There's that.

Everybody, I need models in 30 minutes.

[bold instrumental hip-hop plays]

I'm starting to look around.
Everyone's is really nice.

Makes me feel...

a bit intimidated.

Yes. [chuckles]

[Craig sighs heavily]

[groans] I always hate doing
this part because it's so scary.

-Go for it.
-Oh, my gosh. I don't really know how to!

Oh!

-Sorry, sorry, sorry!
-[laughs]

I feel like I'm doing
some sort of torture device.

-Have I got your skin in there?
-No.

[inhales sharply]

No, we're not doing lashes, no.
It's gonna look too much.

[Vanessa] Will they take it
just a bit too far at the end?

It's knowing when to stop,
isn't it? Pressure!

[Vanessa] Completely.

[Dolli] I'm gonna give you
a really glossy red lip.

I hope that the judges like it.

I've just seen Dolli's done a red lip
so that's stressing me out.

Like, "What the hell?"
Why has she done a red...

I'm so stressed. What?

Is mine not... Now I'm really confused.

[dramatic instrumental hip-hop playing]

[sighs]

Five minutes left.

Stay calm.

Do you like that lip?

A bit too dark.

Too dark. I feel that, too.

Can you pat the product off for me?

[Sophie sighs]

Turn your head this way.

Okay, it's too dark.

[Craig] Look up.

Everybody, time's up.
I need your models now.

-[Samah] Ooh!
-It's over. [chuckles]

Dolli did a red lip.

-Did she?
-Yes.

It could work.

[Dolli] I think it was a risk
going with a red lip,

but at this point in the competition,
you have to take those sort of risks.

[groovy percussive music plays]

[Maya] While the ASOS team get busy

with the rest
of the campaign shoot next door,

it's up to the judges to decide

which of the MUAs' looks will be selected
for the first shot of the video.

[Vanessa] This is Jack's model.

I think Jack has done
an excellent job with the skin.

What I liked about Jack's look
was the dramatic line of the eyeliner.

It's given something a bit different.

[Val] You could put
a gel liner over the top of that

and really pull that out
and make it look more fierce and sharp.

Ryley, her skin matching
is a bit better here,

except for it runs the risk
of looking a little bit greasy.

Yeah, there's definitely
a Sweaty Betty going on.

[Vanessa] All the details
just aren't strong enough. Like the eye.

Nothing's really jumping out on camera.

So, this is Sophie's look.

It's a shame, because you just look at it,
all you see is the eye shadow.

There's something about the shadow
as well, it just feels a little bit dated.

I am really disappointed.
I was really excited to see

what she would bring today.

[Dominic] Samah.

[Vanessa] I love the brow.
It looks really strong.

-[Dominic] Love the brow.
-[Vanessa] That draws you into the eye.

She just needed
to do more with the lashes.

[Val] When you're doing a mascara ad,

you get a green pencil
into the water line.

That makes the black pop more.

Is it inspiring?
No, I don't think it's inspiring.

So, this is Craig's model.

-[Dominic] That skin looks amazing.
-[Vanessa] It looks flawless.

It looks fresh, glowing.
All the right angles.

Because Craig has used
a lighter color behind the mascara,

it really makes it stand out.

I think in terms of the small screen,
I think it'll definitely work.

[Dominic] Girls are gonna look at her
and they wanna be her.

Exactly.

Some boys are gonna wanna be her, too.

-That'll make you stop and stare.
-I'm one of them.

[Vanessa laughs]

[Vanessa] Okay, so this is Dolli's model.

[melancholic music plays]

The red lip is so distracting.

[Val] Well, definitely,
I think if you are selling mascara,

you don't really want
to detract from the eye.

[Vanessa] It's a shame,
she started really well.

-This is a bridal campaign.
-Yeah.

[tense music playing]

Hello, judges.

[judges] Hello.

Thank you for all your amazing work.

You certainly gave us loads to talk about.

But for me, there's one MUA
that really hit the brief.

The look was really inspiring,
also really relatable.

So, the winning MUA is

Craig.

[artists exclaim and applaud]

Oh! Thank you, thank you.

[sighs]

-Thanks, everyone. Thank you.
-[all laugh]

[Vanessa] Right, well done, Craig.
We need to go to shoot.

-You got touch-ups to do.
-Let's do it.

-[Maya] Oh, my God.
-[all cheer]

[poppy dance music playing]

You see how the makeup's really working?

-Like, with the camera angles?
-Yeah.

I just can't believe I've won.
This is genuinely a dream,

to work for ASOS.
So, I'm super proud of myself.

Seeing the model in her full outfit,
her hair slicked back,

and the makeup, the lights
and the camera, it looked amazing.

I'm absolutely buzzing.

-[Craig gasps] Amazing. It's so beautiful.
-[Vanessa] She's amazing. Yeah.

-Well done.
-Thank you.

[Maya] As always,
the two MUAs who least impressed

will start the day tomorrow
in the Face Off chairs.

At risk is Ryley.

[Val] The makeup is too basic,
and we wanted a story.

We wanted something that was gonna
make the customer stop scrolling.

-That definitely isn't gonna do that.
-No, that's...

Right on by, go, go, go, go.

And I also think at risk is Dolli.

Dolli with the red lip.

[Val] At the end of the day,
it's a mascara brief.

I think we've got to talk about Sophie.

Yeah, that was a bit of a miss.

[Val] If we were selling
a palette of eye shadow,

then it would have worked.

I couldn't see the mascara.

Yeah. That's why it just won't work
for the brand campaign,

because we're not selling eye shadow.

[dreamy house music plays]

[Maya] The next morning,
and at Glow Up Studios,

the judges have decided which two MUAs
failed to hit the brief yesterday.

Oh, my God.

[Maya] If an MUA's name
is on one of the two red chairs,

they're headed for the Face Off
elimination at the end of the day.

Oh, my God.

Ryley, Dolli,
you two are in the Face Off chairs,

which means you have
15 minutes less to complete your task.

So, Ryley, we were actually
really impressed by your color matching,

but the look was just too plain

and it didn't have
the impact that we really needed.

Thank you.

And, Dolli, you started off so well,
your model's skin was glowing,

but adding that bold lip
was totally off-brief,

and just wasn't right
for the brand campaign.

Sophie, you had a lucky escape.

[Maya] There is still one way
to escape the Face Off elimination,

by impressing the judges
in today's creative brief.

[Dominic] For today's creative brief,

we want you to create a look
that is out of this world.

This could mean
exploring space as we know it,

imagining extraterrestrial life,
or creating a vision of another world.

Your look should be bold and creative.

You should be reaching for the stars.

-Are you ready?
-Yep.

-Beam in the models!
-[Jack laughs]

[bold electronic music plays]

So, MUAs, today for this,
you're gonna have two and a half hours.

Ryley, Dolli, I'll let you know
when your 15 minutes are up.

The rest of you, your time starts now.

[Craig] I'll just be right back.

Are the white bits going to be teeth?

-[Sophie] Yeah.
-[model exclaims]

[percussive music playing]

I'm just setting up everything
'cause I don't wanna mess up.

In my world, there is no medicine.

So when people get ill or sick, they get
replaced by technology and mechanics.

I was expecting
to be in the Face Off chair,

so I was quite shocked when I wasn't, but...

I mean, I'm glad I'm not.

My brief today is the result

of when aliens try
to create the perfect human,

but it goes wrong.

[Maya] Despite escaping the red chairs,

any of the other MUAs could still find
themselves in the Face Off elimination

if their look today
doesn't make the grade.

[clicks tongue] Dolli is so upset.

[Vanessa] I know, I can tell.

And Dolli has served
some incredible looks.

-Incredible stuff.
-Has she been in the Face Off chair?

-She hasn't.
-No.

-[Maya] All right, girl?
-Hello.

Hey, how you doing?

You've swerved this chair the whole time.

Yeah. I think I'm trying
not to psych myself out.

I'm gonna go into it,
show the judges I deserve to be here.

Don't want you to crumble, you got this.

-Of course.
-Yeah.

-Good luck.
-Thank you.

[Maya] How you doing, Ryley?

-I'm feeling all right.
-Yeah?

I feel like this kind of gives me
motivation to get myself out.

I'm trying things I've never done before,
including a bald cap.

-[laughs]
-Right.

Ambitious when you've got 15 minutes less.

I like to take a risk.

I've already said
we are taking away the eyesight.

She's gonna have to prop my head up.
I'm gonna be asleep.

[intriguing electronic music plays]

[Maya] Samah is hoping
to impress the judges

by using prosthetics for the first time.

[Samah] My inspiration is lions
and Pokémon, Jigglypuff.

The hardest part
about using latex is it is fiddly

and it can go wrong very easily.

So, this is a massive risk.

I'm using the prosthetics
to make something beautifully weird.

The prosthetic is just too big.

So Samah is cutting around her prosthetic.

[Dominic] Before she stuck it on.

She could run the risk
of cutting that prosthetic so tight

that she's got no fabric left
to bleed away.

[melancholic music playing]

-Hi, Jack.
-Hi.

And just to say, you were
a really close second for me yesterday.

Oh, thank you so much.

-So, what have you got planned today?
-So, gonna create my alien goddess.

Someone that's gonna help us
through this apocalyptic vibe.

-Sounds amazing.
-Thank you so much.

-I'm looking forward to it. Good luck.
-Thank you.

Ryley, Dolli, your time starts now.
Off you go.

[whispering indistinctly]

-Hey, hey, hey.
-Hey, hey, hey.

[suspenseful music plays]

-[Ryley] Ready to say goodbye to eyesight?
-Yeah. Oh, right?

Like right now? Okay. All right.

[Dolli] I'm just covering
her brows at the moment,

just to give myself a clean base.

[Maya] To escape the Face Off chair,

Dolli needs to execute
her African queen look

despite the 15-minute time penalty.

[Dolli] So, the basis of my story is
she dabbles in a little bit of black magic

and she's been stealing beauty secrets
from all across the universe.

She's from Ghana,
and my daughter is also half Ghanaian,

so this is, like,
a little homage to her as well.

[Maya] To create
her majestic alien creature,

Ryley is removing
almost all of her model's features.

[Ryley] How do you do this?

[chuckles softly]

I don't know. Sophie, do you cut
the bald cap before you put it on?

-Put it on and then cut it.
-Okay.

[model laughs]

Just hold that there for me.

Oh, my gosh.

-[breathes heavily]
-[model] Come on, come on.

[Ryley exclaims]

-That bald cap's too small.
-[Vanessa] It's not gonna work, is it?

[Ryley exhales heavily]

Just pulling it down slowly
because I really don't want this to rip.

[mutters softly]

[Ryley sighs]

-Watch out for that cotton ball.
-[Ryley] Oh, yes.

-My gosh. Has it come up?
-It's doing something weird.

-Sorry. You okay?
-No, no. I'm fine.

[exhales slowly] This is so...

-Okay, can you still breathe?
-Ooh!

-Oh, my God.
-It actually feels quite pleasant.

[Ryley laughs]

[suspenseful music plays]

Straight.

I'm a bit stressed with time.

Once I get these done and start painting,
I can really add shade and work in there,

I think I'll be a lot more comfortable.

Okay.

[Maya] Sophie's covered her model's face
by applying three prosthetics,

a technique she's trained in.

I want the face to look
like it's pretty much falling apart.

Look at the way
she's whipping through that prosthetic.

Bish, bash, bosh.

This is not her first time
at the supermarket.

[both laugh]

[Dominic] My worry,
'cause you can see the teeth,

is it gonna look a little Halloween-y?

-I don't want Halloween.
-Who knows?

I always wondered
what I would look like bald.

-[Jack] Now you know.
-[both laugh]

I'm sorry,
this looks absolutely disgusting.

-Yeah.
-Like it's gonna jump off and...

-[Jack] And eat you.
-Yeah.

She is gonna go on my model's throat
to give you more of that alien vibe.

Know what this actually looks like?
Loads of little nostrils.

-Like little nostrils. Absolutely.
-Doesn't it?

[Jack laughing]

[suspenseful music continues]

Half an hour gone, guys.

Two hours left.

-So, if you look up for me.
-Mm-hmm.

[Maya] Dolli is relying solely on makeup
to achieve an intergalactic look.

This looks very nice
on your skin. [chuckles]

To make this metallic look,
I'm just mixing two pigments together.

Look over at Dolli.
That's come together really quickly.

-Dolli's made a fast start, hasn't she?
-[Val] Wow.

Or is this like a dual chrome pigment?

So that when the model moves,
it changes color.

[Vanessa] Ooh, wow.

Oh, my God.
What is going on over here? Big cheeks.

-Yes.
-These are nice.

I was hoping to use four prosthetics
to create a shape over the head as well,

but my model's face is lovely and round.

So, if I do it on top,
it's just gonna completely be too much.

Well, I'm very, very intrigued
to see where this goes.

Thank you, thank you.

[gentle music plays]

Why is this not sticking?

The prosthetic will not stick.

[sighs heavily]

Here we go.

[Dominic] Finally,
I'm getting color on. I mean, what?

We're nearly halfway through?

[Samah] I'm just blending the color.

I want a really unique pink shade.

One hour gone.

You've got an hour and a half left.

[Craig] Don't say that.

-They've gotta speed up.
-They need to move.

[funky house music playing]

I feel like an alien already.

[Jack] Yeah? It's beautiful.
You really suit it as well. [laughs]

[sequins rattling]

I'm trying not to panic,
but looking around the room,

I'm sort of not as confident
in my look as I was before.

I'm getting some shading
in the inner face.

I wanna give something really futuristic,
so all my lines have to be really clean.

I hope we don't lose the cool
and go into the land of The Wizard of Oz.

[Vanessa] That's it.
It could be a bit Tin Man.

[Ryley] We're getting there. I'm getting
this paint on you as quick as possible.

Oh, I'm loving what I'm seeing from Ryley.

[Vanessa] Glossy, glossy.

[Val] It might look better, though,

in a sex...

-[Dominic laughs]
-...sort of show.

[Vanessa] Yeah. It looks like a gimp mask.

Yeah, it does look like a gimp mask,
but it looks like a really good gimp mask.

[Maya] Sophie's lifelong love
of sci-fi films and TV shows

has been the inspiration
behind her look today.

At the moment, I'm using alcohol paints
to create exposed muscle tissue.

I'm making something that's been
in my head since I was, like, five.

Even standing here,
I'm emotional 'cause it's like,

I didn't think I'd do it.

But...

I think today, I'm really, like,
putting my heart into it, so...

Oh, God.

[suspenseful percussive music playing]

-You got this. [chuckles]
-[sniffles and sighs]

[sniffs] Okay. All right.
I'm gonna move on to the dotting now.

[judges] Ooh!

[Val] I think that looks
absolutely astonishing.

[Vanessa] Yeah.

I think it looks amazing.

It looks like proper alien skin.

[Val] And she still feels beautiful.

[Vanessa] Yeah.

Whereas meanwhile, on the next planet...

[Dominic and Vanessa laugh]

[Val] It's not very pretty.

[Samah] I'm shading

but I'm also highlighting
the forehead area.

This is just gonna create a dimension.

It's looking like how I wanted it to look.

[Jack] Oh, my God, I'm shaking.

I can't believe I'm shaking.
I never shake.

-No, no, no, no! What are you doing?
-No. What's going on now?

What do you call that
when you spangle your bits?

-[both] Vajazzle.
-Yeah.

-Like, vajazzle-y, this sort of sensual...
-[Dominic laughs]

...sort of sequined, jeweled moment.

All right, two hours gone,
half an hour left.

[bold instrumental hip-hop plays]

[Sophie] Getting stressed now.
I just don't want them to fall off.

It's going okay, it's going okay.

Concentration time.

Super fiddly.

[Ryley] I really don't want
any dots to smudge,

and then I've got to really get
the branches sprayed and applied.

[Sophie] Do you feel gross?

I mean, a little bit,
but it's kind of cool-gross, innit?

[Ryley] They're so big.

Five minutes left.

Oh, no. [chuckles]

[Ryley] I hope
this kind of sticks like this.

It won't stick.
They're so heavy, they just fall.

[ethereal music plays]

[Craig] This prosthetic
is not wanting to work with me.

[groans]

[mutters softly]

[scissors snip]

[Ryley] I wanna get these branches on.

[Jack] From the other pieces.

I've never created a look like this.

[Ryley] Oh.

-Time's up! Brushes down, MUAs.
-[Ryley sighs]

-Oh, my God.
-[Maya] Stop what you're doing.

Yeah. I'm happy with that.

It's gonna go. I don't think
she'll get into the photo room.

[Samah] It will, it will. Just guide her.

Okay, please take your models
next door to be photographed.

[Jack] Come on. Let's go.

-Okay.
-[exclaims nervously]

-[brushes rattle]
-Sorry.

No, it's absolutely fine. I'll help you.

Just follow me, let me give you space.
Stay there. Let's go forward.

-Where's that ledge-y bit?
-I got your hand.

-I tripped on the way in!
-Walk with me.

-I feel like I'm gonna walk into stuff.
-It's okay. Just keep following me.

-[judges laughing]
-[Ryley hums musically]

[groovy percussive music playing]

Jack, please come forward.

[suspenseful music playing]

[Jack] The concept behind my look
was something out of this world,

but to go for more
of a goddess-empress-type creature.

There was one moment

when the makeup was
the best makeup in the room.

It was breathtaking,

until you started the vajazzling.

[artists laughing]

At one point,

she just looked like a supermodel alien,
but then you just kept going.

I wish you had stopped
about 40 minutes before.

Thank you.

[softly] I knew I should've stopped.

Ryley, please come forward.

[gentle music playing]

[Ryley] As soon as I heard
"out of this world,"

this image just came into my head.

If these are visions that you're getting,
then keep doing it.

This is beautiful.
This is beyond what I would expect.

[Ryley] Thank you.

There is something
really eerie about the eyes.

It's just an incredibly clever makeup.

Simple, so effective, and stunning.

For me, you have arrived,
and you're making me emotional.

Oh, my God, stop.

A true visionary invents, and that's what
I love about what you brought us today.

And for that I'm gonna give you
a double ding, dong,

because it really flies.

[all applaud]

-[sobs] Thank you.
-[judges] Thank you.

Oh, my gosh. Thank you so much.

Can I get Samah, please?

So, my concept is something
that's mysterious, something beautiful,

that's luring, kind of like,

familiar but unfamiliar.

I don't think
you hit the mark for me this week.

You've got darker shades
where I would've thought

you would've wanted
to bring out the highlight.

If you had put the darker pink color
below on the prosthetic,

that would have created
more of an angular sort of face.

One thing that really does
kind of bug me is the symmetry.

Okay.

If we look at this eye,
there's that sort of contour

that kind of points up
to the temple hairline.

But then on the other side, it's kind of...
The angles are slightly different.

We're in week five now.

I don't expect symmetry to be an issue.

Mm-hmm.

Craig, please step forward.

I wasn't going towards the alien side,

but a bit more of what the world's
gonna be like, maybe in year 3000.

I think this is outstanding.

It is completely futuristic,
and there's a lot of depth.

It makes you see these layers

of robotics and skin and machinery.

-[laughs]
-I love the color palette.

Like they've been
in a futuristic hospital. It looks great.

-Thank you very much.
-Dolli.

[Dolli] So, I thought
about a Ghanaian queen,

stealing beauty secrets from everywhere.

I feel like if I zoom in,
I'm gonna find the kitchen sink.

It is completely over-the-top,
but your story, I see it in this makeup.

I believe what she's doing.
I do actually love it.

First thing I'm gonna say is symmetry.

If I look at the chin,
you're better than that.

Dolli, if you're gonna put an eyelash on,

bend the lash before you apply it.

That lash is on a diagonal.
And so, it didn't really work for me.

Yeah, thank you, guys.

Can I get Sophie, please?

[Sophie] I take inspiration
from all the sci-fi films

and TV shows I watched when I was younger,

like John Carpenter and Tim Burton,
that sort of thing.

[Dominic] The overall effect is so good.

The brush strokes in the blue,

and you've put gloss in it
so it looks real.

You can imagine this makeup in the film.

It's really well thought out.

[Val] When you started doing the hair,
I was like, "Okay, Barbarella."

Then you started putting
the prosthetics on

and you were giving me Tilda Swinton.

And then you went
into the Jolly Green Giant,

and it suddenly became
this creature from the lagoon.

I'm not saying that
to make fun of your work.

I'm saying that
to say that your work is incredible.

[Sophie] Thank you.

[Val] Everything about this, I love.

My second ding, dong of the day!
Second ding, dong!

-Amazing! Amazing.
-[all applaud]

-Oh, my God. I feel sick.
-[all laughing]

-Unbelievable.
-Feel like I'm gonna pass out.

[Sophie sighs and chuckles]

Okay, guys,
if you could please go next door

whilst we decide who is going
into the Face Off elimination.

[suspenseful music plays]

-[Jack] So proud of you.
-[Sophie] Thank you.

So let's start with one of our artists
who started in the Face Off chair, Dolli.

[Vanessa] The lash is just too much.

She's thrown
every makeup idea at her model,

and it just doesn't all work together.

So, let's talk about the other MUA
who started today in the Face Off chairs.

Ryley.

-[Val] I mean, girl...
-[Dominic laughs heartily]

She woke up.

-Didn't she just?
-That's how you beat the seat.

That means we have a seat to fill.
I think we need to talk about Samah.

[Val] It's a real shame.

She tried to deliver too much,

and in the end, it just wasn't her day.

Jack. It was a great makeup.

They should really have stayed
in focus and known when to stop.

[Maya speaks imperceptibly]

Dolli and Ryley, you started today
in the Face Off chairs.

Dolli, we really liked
the story behind your look,

but there were technical mistakes
and there was too much going on.

I'm sorry, Dolli,
but you didn't beat the seat.

You will be the first MUA
going into today's Face Off elimination.

Ryley, we wanted a look
that reached for the stars,

and you took us to another world
to get yourself out of that seat.

Which means we have a chair to fill.

Samah, the look you gave us was confusing,

and it's not
the technical makeup we expect

at this point in the competition.

So, unfortunately,

you will be the second MUA
going into the Face Off elimination.

[Maya] All right. Thank you, judges.
I'll bring them through.

All right, girls, you know how it goes.
Say your goodbyes,

as only one of you will be returning.

[dramatic pulsing music plays]

[Dolli] I'm gonna fight for my place here.
I hope my skills show through

and I don't get pressured
by the environment. That's my downfall.

I think I'm ready for it.

I think I will survive.
This will be my fourth time

on the Face Off elimination,
so, I don't quit.

You need to physically tell me,
"Yeah, it's time to go home."

[Maya] To create a level playing field,
the MUAs will face off

over a pair of identical twins.

[Dolli exhales heavily]

[Val] For your Face Off today,

we want a structured glitter eye.

This isn't a normal glitter eye.
We're looking for an adornment.

To start, you want to get
a solid, symmetrical shape

by painting on your lash glue.

Next I'd use a small eye shadow applicator

to pick up that glitter
and start pressing it on,

making sure I cover
every inch of skin within that shape.

Following this,

check both eyes to make sure
the glitter is evenly distributed.

The final step, you wanna grab
some tape to clean up those edges

and to remove any fallout from the cheek.

We're looking
for a precise, graphic shape.

Sharp, clean outlines.

Now, this eye can be any shape
or color you wish, but it must be placed

either above the socket
or below the lower lash line.

So, when the eyes are open,

none of that shape
is hidden by the eyelid.

We are looking for symmetry,

and absolutely no fallout.

All right, girls,
you're gonna have 15 minutes.

Good luck. Your time starts now.

[suspenseful music playing]

Five minutes gone.
You've got ten minutes to go.

[both] Wow!

[Val] Interesting.

Both MUAs have gone
for the same area on the eye.

[Dominic] Yeah.

One MUA is doing the shape
from above the socket line

all the way down to the lid.

-That's not what we asked for.
-That's not what we asked for.

[Dominic] What I love
about Dolli is she's gone in

and created the shape above the socket,
which is what we asked for.

But she's gone for a really fine glitter,

and the trouble with that
is it can go everywhere,

and you don't always see it.

So she may have trouble with fallout,

because once that glitter's on,
it's hard to get off.

One minute, 30 seconds left.

Five, four, three, two, one.

Brushes down, please.

[Samah flaps lips] That was stress.

[ethereal music playing]

-Conflab?
-Conflab.

-God, this is the waiting.
-[Dolli mutters]

Oh, my God.

What we asked for
was a strong, graphic shape.

We didn't ask for glitter all over...

[both] ...the eyelid.

I think it's a clear winner.

I think it's a total clear winner.
It's like slam, bam, dunk, done.

[dramatic piano music playing]

[Val] So, Samah,

you started well by using powder
to prevent any fallout

and you also mapped out your design.

Dolli, you gave us
perfectly symmetrical lines

and a structured shape.

[Val] Samah.

We didn't ask for a full lid of glitter.

And so for that reason,
you're going home. Pack your kit.

-It's okay. It's okay.
-[sobs]

[Samah] My ride has been a theme park,

on express lane.

There's been no middle grounds for me.

-I'm so sorry.
-[Samah's voice catches]

I knew I was always a fighter,
but I didn't know how hard I can fight.

-You're a great makeup artist.
-Thank you.

-You know, just keep being you.
-[sobs] I'll try.

I'm proud of what I've achieved.
I'm gonna leave a better makeup artist.

[rousing music plays]

[artists gasp and laugh]

[Maya] She survived!

[Dolli] I feel so happy.
I feel so blessed to still be here.

It was difficult,
but I'm so proud of myself.

I just want to do well.
I just have to work really, really hard,

because it's just shown me
that I... I want this even more.

I'm not perfect
and I'm still learning, so,

hopefully I'm able to come back
bigger and better next week.

Well done, everybody. The final five!

-Smashed it!
-[Craig] Yes!

-[all applaud]
-Yay!

[groovy percussive music playing]
