Glow Up: Britain's Next Make-Up Star (2019–…): Season 3, Episode 8 - The Finale: A Masterclass - full transcript

The final three must make their make with high-pressure master classes. Unstoppable statements and flawless faces will send only one to the top.

[Maya Jama] It's time to Glow Up.

[dramatic brassy music playing]

[Maya] Over the past seven weeks,

the MUAs have proved they're ready
to make their mark in the world of makeup.

Now, for the final, Val and Dominic want
to give them the ultimate career boost.

Welcome to the final!

-[Dolli mock screams]
-[all laugh]

Guys, you've really made us proud.

But now the spotlight is on you.

Tomorrow, you'll be presenting
a master class to a handpicked selection

of the makeup industry's
most influential people.

We have opened up
our personal black books

to put you in front
of a panel that we really trust.

Now, this could be
a major opportunity for you

because they could book you,
they could write about you,

they could collaborate with you.

This is major!

We want you to show off
your skill and technique,

and what makes you stand out
from other MUAs.

[Maya] Giving the MUAs
some last-minute advice

is someone who knows a thing or two
about delivering a master class.

-Congratulations, my darlings...
-I knew it!

...for making it to the final.
I was always known as making women feel

like the most beautiful version
of themselves.

The different kind of Tilbury eyes,
to mesmerize.

Think about what feels right to you,
that beauty DNA.

Hone in on your craft,

and that signature look
will really identify you as an artist

and make you stand out.

So, good luck, my darlings.

Sending you lots of love and luck.

-Oh, my God.
-What'd we say?

[energetic dance music plays]

[Maya] One of the biggest names
in the business,

Charlotte Tilbury is a master
of the online master class.

She's clocked up over 79 million views,
a trend worth billions.

Virtual master classes offer brands
a platform for their products,

and MUAs a chance
to showcase their skills.

Along with industry giants

such as Charlotte,
Makeup by Mario, and Manny MUA,

our finalists need to prove they can
hold their own in the online space.

I'm more excited about this one,
because this is the future.

[Val] A master class
is a skill that you need to master.

It should be engaging,
and it should be exciting.

You've got to give
the audience tips, tricks, how-tos,

and bring them back wanting more.

[bouncy house music plays]

[Maya] Each finalist has just one day
to prepare a master class

on the look they feel
best represents them as an artist.

[Dolli] "People need to push
their makeup to the next level."

[Maya] Dolli wants to wow
the panel with her go-to look

and prove that glam makeup
can be done on the go.

[Dolli] I decided to do
my classic smoky eye,

so everyone can go away feeling like,
"Oh, I can do this," you know?

And have the confidence
to wear it as well.

"The demonstration will be...
Can be used for anyone's skin." Mmm.

[Maya] Craig wants to make makeup
just as accessible for men as women,

and help everyone feel empowered.

Growing up, like, in Northern Ireland,
boys didn't wear makeup.

But I want men to feel comfortable.

It's not something to be ashamed
or be embarrassed about.

As long as I stand up straight,
and I'm cool, calm, and collected,

I think we'll get the job done okay.

[Maya] Sophie wants to share
her passion for special effects makeup

and demonstrate that
it's something anyone can try.

[Sophie] I'm basically gonna show
how to do a black eye,

because I won
the special effects industry assignment.

[Maya] As well as coming up with her look,
Sophie's also having to tackle

her fear of public speaking.

I'm literally stressed about tomorrow.

I can't even speak in front of the judges,
and they're, like, two people,

and now I'm gonna have to do it
in front of, like, loads of people.

It's such a big deal.

[poppy electronic music playing]

[Maya] Today's final brings our three MUAs

right into the creative hub
of London's Kings Cross...

...where they'll be performing
their individual master classes

to a panel from around the globe,

and one very influential guest judge.

Morning!

[artists] Good morning.

Allow me to introduce a world-famous MUA
who is no stranger to a master class,

Lisa Eldridge!

-[artists applaud]
-I'm really honored to be here.

[Maya] From Vogue to Harper's Bazaar,
and with clients like Chanel and Burberry,

Lisa's vision has made her
one of the world's leading makeup artists.

I've worked with most A-list celebrities,

everyone from Dua Lipa and Rihanna
to Nicole Kidman, Kate Winslet.

The list goes on.

[Maya] No stranger
to the online master class,

Lisa was one of the first MUAs
to realize their full potential,

racking up over two million subscribers
and a whopping 210 million views.

Later today, you're gonna have 30 minutes
to give me all of your tips and tricks.

We really need you
to connect with the audience.

You don't have to be loud and showy,
you just have to be authentic.

Really bring those stories from the heart.

If you do that,
you'll connect with the audience.

And the makeup needs
to be beautifully executed.

Go out there, smash it, and make us proud.

[intriguing synth music playing]

[Maya] For today's master class, Val
and Dominic have called in their contacts

to secure an unrivaled lineup
of experts from around the world.

[Val] Hi, everyone.

[all] Hi!

What are you looking for today?

Somebody with a strong sense
of themselves,

a really unique point of view.

And, ultimately, I'm looking
for something that surprises me.

-Assistant editor for Dazed Beauty.
-[Dolli] I love Dazed Beauty.

-Would you wanna work for Dazed Beauty?
-Yes, please.

-Yeah?
-Yeah.

As someone who does beauty
in the online space,

I wanna see someone
that's fun and easy to follow along with.

[Maya] He is a beauty and social media
expert. Craig, I heard the gasps.

I used to watch him on YouTube.
I still do.

[Maya] Shannon Peter.
Beauty director at Stylist Magazine.

Another big publication.

-Get in her good books.
-Yeah.

To be fair, get in everyone's good books.

Everybody in this book
can benefit you in some way...

-100%.
-...if they like you.

[mellow electronic music plays]

[Maya] All the experts on today's panel
could help launch an MUA's career.

So, the finalists need to impress.

Gonna be making notes.

[judges cheer and laugh]

[Maya] First to take the floor is Sophie.

Sophie, Brian Kinney,

special effects makeup artist,
especially for you, Sophie.

-Yeah.
-Do you know him?

He's a CSI man. Yeah.

Yeah, I really respect his work,
so that's exciting.

[uplifting dance music plays]

[Maya] University student Sophie
is our youngest finalist at just 21.

Calm and collected is the best way to be.

I just wanna look at it forever.

[Val] I'm very excited
to see what else you bring.

People are finally seeing
all the stuff I've been doing

in my bedroom for two years.

[Maya] In the final year
of her makeup degree,

Sophie hasn't let
a lack of professional experience

deter her from her goal.

I really want to work in TV.

It's gorge, girl.

I wanna stick my finger in it,
I know I'd get... [mimics squish]

-Amazing!
-[Maya] You're the winner!

[artists cheering]

[Maya] Finding herself in the Face Off
elimination a week before the final...

I don't know if this is semifinal level.

[Val] Hang in there, girl.

[Maya] ...hasn't been
Sophie's only challenge.

I've never really wanted to talk
about the struggles with my autism,

because I felt so ashamed by it.

Had I not done this competition,

I don't think I'd have been able to have
the confidence to put myself out there.

[Cate Hall] Sophie, you will be coming
to assist me on the set of The Crown.

It just means a lot.

One of my favorite quotes
by Alan Turing is,

"Sometimes it's the people
that no one imagines anything of

that do the things
that no one can imagine."

You can do anything
if you put your mind to it.

[suspenseful music playing]

[Maya] Sophie has decided to showcase
her passion for special effects makeup.

I feel like there's some sort
of unspoken gatekeeping

around who can do special effects makeup,

but I feel like I can show people
that anyone can do it.

[Maya] There's just one obstacle
to overcome...

Sophie's fear of public speaking.

It's just speaking to my friends
on FaceTime.

Chilling.

I'm most nervous
that I might just go completely mute.

Um, that can happen
when you get overwhelmed and stuff.

First up, we have Sophie.

[gentle music playing]

So, today for my master class, I'm gonna
do something a little bit different

and focus on special effects makeup.

I'm going to show you guys
how to do a black eye.

Every single Halloween someone says to me,
"Can you do a black eye on me, please?"

And I'm thinking,
"You could really do this yourself,

but sure,
I guess I'll, like, do it for you."

-She's so natural. So natural.
-Good start. Really good start.

-To stand up in front of...
-Yeah.

-[Val] Industry giants.
-[Lisa] She didn't seem...

-Fazed at all.
-No.

I'm actually gonna do one side
of the face with special effects makeup,

and then do the other eye the same,
but using an eye shadow palette.

I wanna show that even if you're at home

and you've only got eye shadow,
you can create the same effect.

-That's interesting.
-Spot on.

I'm using this professional
special effects bruise wheel,

which is greasepaint.

I do like to use my fingers
when I do special effects makeup,

mainly because they're another
ten brushes on your hands,

and you want to warm up this pigment,
especially if it's cream product.

And the reason for the yellow
and green pigmenting is actually, um, to...

um...

Now speed this up.

[laughs] So the reason for
the yellow and green pigment

is to basically mimic
the aging of the bruising.

Great. Good tip.

Your dark circles are actually
blood vessels at the surface of the skin.

That's what bruising is also.
If you're gonna be bruising,

you'll also be having
those areas become darker, too.

-She's done her research.
-Yeah.

With special effects,
I think people are quite intimidated

because they think you have to use
all these really high-end products.

So, I'm going to move on
to the other side of the face,

where I'm gonna create the same effect
using an eye shadow palette.

Like I did with the bruise wheel,
I'll start with the yellow and green tone.

[Val] She's in her stride.

Actually, special effects makeup
is everywhere.

The Gucci runway show in 2018,
they had these silicone dragons,

then they had replica heads
of their models walking down the runway.

I love that.

Marilyn Monroe, she used to put
dark eye shadow underneath her eyes.

It'd make her eyelashes look heavier
and her eyes look elongated,

and actually, that is a special effect.

[Val] Good tip.

I really think
that you couldn't really tell

which side I've used
special effects makeup

and which side I've used eye shadow.

I quite admire the subtlety of the makeup.

Yeah.

[Lisa] Because she could have
gone so full-on.

-[Val] Gruesome.
-Mmm.

Thank you guys for listening
to my quick and easy master class

on how to do a black eye.

Don't ask me next Halloween
to do it for you.

[chuckling]

-[Dominic] This is quite clever.
-It was a smart angle.

Are there any questions
that any of you guys have for me?

What makeup challenge
do you see ahead for yourself,

maybe a makeup that might have
given you fear at some point,

but you're looking forward to attempt?

I know that when it comes to prosthetics,

you're obviously adapting the prosthetics
you have for the model that you're given.

So I'm just really looking forward to
getting a wider range of people, really,

and understanding how to make anyone
look like a dead body, I guess.

I don't want to just stick to what I know.
I want to know it all.

I can relate to every word you just said.
Well done.

Thank you.

Thank you, guys. I really appreciate
you talking to me today.

-Thank you!
-Well done.

[judges applaud]

Well, I think Sophie did herself proud.

You could see that she's so passionate...

-Yeah. She was so engaging.
-[Val] ...about what she's doing.

-How was it?
-Scary.

-[Dolli] Really?
-Yeah.

At one point, I did have to breathe,

'cause I forgot to breathe,
so I was like... [gasps] "Anyway..."

You know? So you have to breathe.

I was really impressed
by Sophie's utter passion and nerdery

for her area of artistry.

That's the difference, I think, between
a great makeup artist and a good one.

Do your reference points
go deeper than social media posts

of other people's makeup?

I think that's what the beauty community
loves to see in each other.

I think she had wisdom beyond her years,
and has a bright future in this business.

I look forward to working for her one day.

I love that!

All right, Craigy Craigerson.
It is your time to shine. Muah!

-[artists] Good luck.
-Thanks, girls.

-Here I go.
-See you in a bit.

[bold music playing]

[Maya] Hot off the beauty counter

and with three years' TV and film
makeup training under his belt,

Craig hoped to hit the ground running
in his first industry assignment,

but landed himself
straight in a red chair.

I'm just really disappointed in myself.
It's just... It's hard. It's hard.

[Maya] He quickly turned things around...

Craig is thrashing it.

He had a time penalty,
but he didn't let it faze him.

[Maya] ...and bounced back week on week.

-We're hoping this has flipped the script.
-Ding, dong, she's done.

But the makeup artist that will be
designing a look with me on Pose is Craig.

[all cheer]

The winning MUA is Craig.

[all applaud and cheer]

I still feel like it's not real.
I feel like I'm about to wake up.

[Maya] While delivering technically,

Craig has sometimes
been criticized for playing it safe.

It is quite a straightforward makeup.

The makeup works,
but it is quite a simple makeup.

You gotta go big. Get out of that box.

[Maya] It's now up to Craig to pull out
all the stops when it matters most.

I think to win would be life-changing.
I'm ready. I am so ready.

Whatever life throws at me,
I'm gonna grab it and throw it right back,

because this is what I want to do.

[tense music playing]

[Maya] Craig now hopes
to convince the panel

that his take on male grooming can
become part of every man's daily routine.

This is probably
the highlight of my career as of now,

so I need to hit every nail on the head.

I think I've just forgot everything.

Panel, I would love
to introduce you to Craig.

How are we all? My name is Craig,

and I'm a makeup artist
from Northern Ireland.

Today, I'm going to be
showing you male grooming.

What we're going to look at
is skin preparation,

and the triple B...
the base, the brows, and the bronzer.

[Dominic] Mm-mm-mmm!

Craig has literally walked in
with so much confidence.

[Craig] When I look
at the tones underneath his eye,

a few blue tones,
we wanna color-correct them first.

You take a, kind of, like,
salmon-y pink concealer.

I like to start with the center.

-Nice tip.
-Mm-hmm.

We're not trying to mask the skin.
We're just trying to perfect it.

That's good.

With myself, I kind of got
into male grooming a few years ago.

Growing up in Northern Ireland...

You know, actually, till now, it's not
acceptable for boys to wear makeup,

and I felt really insecure

because in my teenage years,
I had a face full of acne and braces,

so there was
no double wins there with meself.

It was a struggle, to be honest.

So, I used to sneak
a few of my mom's products.

Mainstream brands are starting
to incorporate male grooming

into their collections. We need to see it.
Men need to feel confident.

Applying a bit of makeup, you know,
it's not that scary once you get into it.

-Cute.
-Very cute. He's very charming.

Just prepping that with my finger,
and really pushing it in

and lifting up any excess product
that we don't necessarily need.

-I can see he's got good technique.
-[Val] Yeah.

Most men have a hairline...
Well, every man usually has a hairline.

-When the hair's slicked back, we don't...
-I don't have a hairline. [laughs]

We wanna make sure it works, so don't be
afraid to buff the product into the hair,

just to ensure
that we have a lovely connection.

Thank you for the opportunity
to show you my interpretation

of super-natural, super-fresh,
and super-quick male grooming.

And if there is any questions?

Hi, Craig. My name is Manny.

I honestly had so much fun watching you.

I literally... Your accent. I...

I do have a question. Is there any reason
you decided not to use a color corrector

when you were going in,
instead of using so much concealer?

I use the concealers 'cause sometimes

with too much of a color corrector
and a concealer on top,

it can make the under-eye
look quite heavy.

I like when the moisturizer
mixes with the product, so,

over time, what we find is the concealer
will melt into the moisturizer,

and it would actually wear
nicer throughout the day.

Great tip.

Thank yous all very much
for tuning in today.

[all applaud]

He seemed to be having a really good time,
which is always nice to watch,

an artist enjoying what they're doing.

-Girls.
-Hello.

-How was it?
-Yeah, it was like... Time goes so fast.

At first I was nervous.

He put that salmon corrector on,
I said, "That's bright as hell."

But he blended it out.

Everything looked so beautiful.
I was very impressed.

I thought his presentation skills
were brilliant.

He sounded knowledgeable,

and I felt like he was delivering it to me
as a fellow makeup artist.

[Maya] Last up is Dolli.

-Okay, next. Duckie Thot.
-[Dolli gasps] No way!

-[Maya] Supermodel. Do you love her?
-She's incredible. I love her.

Get in there with the models,
because you could be her future MUA.

[breathes deeply]

[funky music playing]

[Maya] Retail MUA Dolli entered
the competition

and set the bar high from the off.

You smashed this, Dolli.

This is what you do
if you want to win this competition.

[Maya] Her fall from grace
one week later was just as spectacular.

I don't know if I can
get it symmetrical in time.

This is clumsy.

Yeah.

[Maya] Since then, she's had her ups.

For me it was just boom-shaka-laka.
I absolutely adored it.

This really is good enough
to be on set on The Crown.

[Maya] She's also had
her fair share of downs.

The red lip is so distracting.

[Val] Symmetry. You're better than that.

[Loz Schiavo] She's put
the wound on the wrong side.

My journey here hasn't been plain sailing.
[laughs] It's been a hard ride.

I do actually love it.

[Maya] With her biggest cheerleader
at home,

it takes a lot keep this MUA down.

-You've bounced back massively.
-Thank you.

[Dolli] My daughter's always been
my number-one fan.

The fact that she can see me
happy doing what I love

is just the best gift I can give to her,

because it's gonna give her
the message that...

Live your life, be happy.

[gentle music playing]

[Maya] Dolli aims to prove
to the panel that being busy

shouldn't stand in the way
of being glamorous.

Right, everyone,
I'd love to introduce you to Dolli.

[pulsing electronic music plays]

[Dolli] I love going
for a deep, black smoky eye,

but this isn't something
you can do in half an hour.

So I'm gonna give you a quick variation,

how to just bring your makeup
from zero to 100 real quick,

ready to really, really be a showstopper.

Nice one.

I always like to put setting powder
just underneath the eyes.

This way, if you have any fallout,

it's not gonna seep into the skin
and mess up your base already.

Tip, tick.

See, I'm a mom myself.

I don't always have an hour and a half
to sit there and look fabulous.

So this is a good way to get the job done.

When you create a smoky eye
with black pencil,

make sure it's a soft coal pencil,
not something that's like a perma-gel,

because that's water-resistant
and you won't be able to blend.

-Tip two, tick.
-Mm-hmm.

This is something I'm just using with,
you know, a pencil and a brush.

Everyone has that in their makeup kit.
Go to a pound store and pick it up.

Looks great.

She wants to make sure
she gets all her points across.

And she's getting it.

Don't worry about being messy.
This is meant to be edgy.

I'm out on the town, don't care.

We still want to see finesse, though.

I don't wanna see it
looking rough around the edges.

And as you can see,
I've missed some spots in the eyelid here.

So. I'm just going to go in...

-Great.
-...really make sure that's dark.

[Dominic] Own your mistakes.

"It's not looking great,
so I'm gonna fix it."

Be fun with it.
One day I'm wearing pink, the next, green.

Sometimes it matches my earrings,
sometimes, my shoes.

Give it an accent,
something to make it you,

and makeup can be your personality,
it can be who you are.

Well, we're finding out
about her individuality and her identity.

She's really conveying
her philosophy really well.

I've got my gold studs.

-Oh!
-Mmm.

I put one here, and I put one here.

If that's not symmetrical,
I will be really disappointed.

-You wanna make sure they're the same.
-[Dominic] I'll give her that.

So, this is how to achieve
a look in 20 minutes.

A little bit of pizzazz, a bit of grunge,
a bit of fresh skin.

-I'm with her.
-[Dominic] Mmm.

I like fast makeup.

I'm open to questions if anybody has any.

What advice would you give somebody
who is not so confident with eyeliner?

Do it with your eyes open.

A lot of people close their eyes,
put it on and then open their eyes,

and then it's all wonky.

If you have your eyes forward
looking at the mirror,

and you look at your placement and then
work with what you actually see face-on,

it's easier to create that shape
and work with it,

but not with eyes closed.

I will definitely use that next time.

Thank you, everyone, for listening to me,

and hopefully I'll see you again
in the future. Thank you.

Bye. Thank you.

[funky music playing]

I'm so happy. [laughs]
I was so nervous at first,

but I think I found my feet.

I remembered why
I love makeup so much. Yeah.

-She engaged the audience straightaway.
-Yeah.

-She's got great communication skills.
-Yeah.

-How was it?
-How was it?

Do you know what? I really enjoyed that.

-See? I told you you'd enjoy it.
-[Maya] Yay!

She was very professional
and she actually really surprised me,

elevating what is like
a traditionally smoky eye.

I love seeing a makeup artist,
and you know who it is

because they have a signature.
So I thought that was really cool.

So many tips and tricks
that I am now going to use

in my everyday makeup application.

All three of them, in their own way,
smashed it out of the park.

[Maya] The finalists may
have impressed today,

but they'll have to wait
until tomorrow to find out

if any of them bagged a break
with one of the panel.

[inspiring music plays]

[Maya] It's the final day
at Glow Up Studios,

and with no red chairs
for the final creative brief,

each MUA will start on an equal footing
with everything to play for.

-Good morning!
-[artists] Ooh!

-[Sophie] Oh, my God!
-Lovely! Look at you!

-Another one today.
-[artists laugh]

[Maya] This is their last chance
to prove they've got what it takes

before the winner is decided
in the final Face Off.

You've all got two and a half hours today.

No one's losing 15 minutes.

Put your best foot and finger forward.

Let's go.

[intriguing electronic music plays]

Morning!

[judges] Morning.

Serious congratulations for yesterday.

I was so impressed with all three of you.

Craig, you really impressed the panel
yesterday with your personality,

which really came across.

I personally loved,

and the whole panel did,
that you focused on skin.

Skin is always in fashion, it's always in.

So Beauty Bay would love
to offer to host you

across all of their social platforms
to do a tutorial.

No way.

This means that
you will get massive exposure.

-Congratulations to you.
-Thank you so much.

Thank yous all.
Oh, my God. I can't believe this.

Sophie, everyone loved
your clear passion for special effects

and how that came across.

Brian Kinney was particularly impressed,
saying how your confidence blew him away.

So, what he wants to do is talk to you
one-to-one about your future career

and how he can help you build your kit.

-Amazing. [laughs]
-[Val] Wow.

[all applaud]

Dolli, you really wowed
our panel yesterday

with your charm
and your signature look. So...

Dazed Beauty want to feature you.

Oh, my God.

Not only that,

Sali Hughes and Cult Beauty
want to do a collaboration with you,

and Andrew Gallimore wants to book you.

-[Dolli gasps]
-[Craig whoops]

-[Sophie] Oh, my God, Dolli!
-Thank you so much.

Throughout this competition,
you've all evolved as artists and people.

So, for your final creative brief,

we want you to tell us
why you are unstoppable as an MUA.

The look should demonstrate
who you are as a makeup artist,

and encapsulate new skills you've learned
throughout this competition,

as well as those
you're more comfortable with.

Make a statement.

For the final time, bring in the models!

[Maya] Only the two MUAs
who most impress will make it through

to the final Face Off.

The MUAs have been allowed
to prepare for their final creative brief.

[dramatic instrumental hip-hop playing]

Okay, your two and a half hours
starts now!

-Off you go.
-Be right back.

[Dominic] They are not holding back.
They're going for it.

-Which is good. Unstoppable.
-Yeah.

-Right on the brief.
-Yeah.

My final creative brief
is about all elements of me.

[Maya] By hand-painting
delicate chrysanthemum petals

over strong line work,

Dolli hopes both her softness
and strength shine through,

showing what makes her unstoppable.

I'm using colors that my daughter loves,
which is yellow and purple.

And I just want to show
that I'm a warrior,

and, through the fight,
I always remember her,

and she's always there with me.

This is so weird, like,
being without eyebrows.

I'm painting you purple in a second.

-You just wait.
-All right.

[lively piano music playing]

I love the contrast
of purple against yellow.

Of course, I don't want her
to look like a Teletubby.

Just put your head right back for me.

[Craig] "Unstoppable" made me think, like,
"What makes me unstoppable?" You know?

When you put your mind to something,
you can achieve anything.

[Maya] By venturing into the world
of MRI brain imaging,

Craig hopes to show
how the creative lobe of his brain

sparks his passion for makeup.

Endorphins, when they
get released to the brain,

they cause a positive attitude.
That's how I'll succeed in this industry.

So, I am just putting
all my positivity into this makeup

and hoping that it pays off.

-[Val] Craig has mapped out his design...
-[Lisa] With a white pencil.

[Val] ...with a white pencil to start.

-Interesting.
-It does look interesting.

[pulsing electronic music plays]

So, the look I'm doing today
is how I've used my coping mechanisms

throughout to feel unstoppable.

[Maya] Sophie hopes that her look,
which draws on the comfort

she gets from crystals and aromatherapy,
demonstrate her range.

So, I wanna focus
a bit more on beauty because

I haven't throughout the competition,

so I feel now's a good time
to show that I can still do that as well.

Where's the signature Dolli in this look?
What's your... [exclaims]

I am using UV paint for the petals.

I have a UV light I'm gonna have her hold.
I literally want her to light up.

It's what my daughter's done for me.
She's a light inside me.

Even if it may not photograph, I want her
to look in the mirror, be like, "Wow."

Oh!

-[Val] Oh! It's an apparition, isn't it?
-Love this. So beautiful.

[Maya] Sophie's dreams
of winning the competition

have always been crystal clear.

I want it so bad. I literally want to be
able to do this for the rest of my life.

When you're passionate about something,
it's the one thing that keeps you going.

Everything I do is this. So, like...

It just... It means a lot.

[driving electronic music plays]

[Craig] I've looked at reference pictures
of what a scanned brain looks like,

and kind of like the infrared of it,

of the tones of the deep blues
and the bright reds.

[Maya] Craig has always had
his head in the game,

and now has the prize firmly in his gaze.

To win it... This can change my whole life.

I can end up
anywhere in the world with this.

I wanna see everything
and do everything with this.

I recognize this for you.

-Doing the white face and...
-Yeah.

I wanted to go back to the techniques
that I did in my first look,

and be like, "Update!"
Do you know what I mean?

-[Maya] Yeah.
-Like, a bit bigger.

I have learned a lot as well,

and I just don't want
to, like, not show that.

-You've got the crystals.
-Yeah, so, I'm doing those three colors.

Because they sort of represent
confidence, creativity, and intuition.

-[Maya] Okay.
-And career success.

And you're here in the finals,
so get me some crystals.

-They obviously work.
-Yeah, now is the time to use this.

[Lisa] Have you got any crystals, Dom?

-No, but I do love a sequin.
-[Lisa] You like to sparkle.

Yeah. That's my positivity.

[intriguing electronic music plays]

I really wanna shape the face
and make it look, you know,

really eye-catching.

[Maya] Dolli's drive to succeed
is both personal and professional.

It's more than just, you know,
a competition for me.

I would love to be a role model
to everybody that looks like me.

Just the little girls and boys,
to show that life isn't easy,

but just stay determined,

and the world's your oyster
at the end of the day.

One hour gone!

An hour and a half to go.

[claps]

[bouncy electronic music plays]

-[Lisa] Green.
-[Val] Oh! Green.

-Nice.
-Ooh!

It's like Midnight in the Garden of Eden,
isn't it?

[Sophie] There's glitter everywhere.
Oh, I hate glitter.

[exclaims disgustedly]

I'm feeling okay. I'm trying to...

'Cause it's symmetry,
I'm trying to get everything done,

and make sure I concentrate.

[Craig] Now I'm adding some crystals.

What that's gonna represent
is the endorphins going into the brain.

It is very fiddly work.

I've still quite a bit left to do,
so I'm stressed.

One hour left now!

[tense electronic music plays]

The pressure in the room right now...

-It's scary, isn't it?
-[Dolli] It's so scary.

[Craig] I really want this
to stand out and connect.

This is your brain.

-How it's functioning when you do makeup.
-Exactly.

-If you cut me open, this is what you see.
-[both laugh]

[suspenseful music playing]

So, I've got left to do all the UV petals.

This is what's really
going to jump out against the purple.

[Val inhales sharply] Ooh!

-Okay.
-Oh.

[Dolli] Making it symmetrical.

Oh, my God. The pressure.

Oh, my God.
I can't do it. I can't do this.

Come on, Dolli!

Oh, my God. I can't do it! [laughs]

All right, 30 minutes left!

[tense instrumental hip-hop playing]

[Val] Is it a necklace?

I'm moving into the Christmas shop now.

I'm stressed with time right now,
but I just need to keep going.

Oh, my God. I don't know what to do.
I don't know what to do.

The only trouble I could see
is it goes too far.

She needs to know
when to put the brakes on.

I'm just applying dried lavender
to the skin.

This lavender's just breaking.

[dreamy house music plays]

[Val] This does look impressive.

It does, yeah. The petals,
look, are beautifully executed.

[Val] Yeah.

Right now,
I just have to keep adding rhinestones.

-[Val] Looks like a superhero.
-Yeah, Endorphin Man.

-Endorphin Man.
-To the rescue!

[Sophie] You look
like a Tim Burton character. Oh, my God.

That's so cute.

Five minutes left!

[cheerful ethereal music playing]

Time is up.

Okay. That's fine. [chuckles]

I can breathe. [chuckles]

Please go and take your models
next door to be photographed.

[Dominic] They're all so different.

It's gonna be so hard
to pick who's going home.

[dreamy music playing]

Sophie, please step forward.

[Sophie] The concept behind it
is crystals and aromatherapy,

and how I use them
to help myself calm down

in order to produce my best work.

[Val] This is a haunting,
ethereal, incredibly accomplished,

flawless, beyond beautiful makeup.

Thank you. [chuckles softly]

Your sense of color is exceptional.

It's painterly, but it's balanced.

And that's a real skill.

You've got the creativity,
the imagination, but your development

is now gonna be about editing.
And if you cover up the lip...

Or keep the lip,
but then remove the lavender.

Well done. This is exceptional. Well done.

-Thank you.
-[all applauding]

[Lisa] So, Craig, please come forward.

[Craig] What makes anyone unstoppable
is their mindset.

You know, when endorphins get released,

that creates the creative mindset
to be positive, basically.

I was like, "I could get loads
of endorphins going into my brain."

[Lisa] This was such a brave concept.

That you are geeky enough
to look into the art that comes from MRIs

speaks so highly of you,
because sometimes people say to me,

"What should I look at for inspiration?"

I'm like, "Not makeup books,
not makeup magazines."

I loved the attention to detail
that you were putting into the face,

and I loved the way
you brought the crystals in,

but if you'd only just joined
that endorphin up into the face,

I might have got that electricity
of positivity exploding in the brain.

This embellishment down the bottom,
it looks incredible.

The colors that you've used, the ambers,
the violets, the pinks, the whites.

I think this is really incredible.
Well done.

Thank you. Thank yous all very much.

[all applaud]

Dolli.

[Dolli] What makes me unstoppable
is my fight.

I see myself as a warrior.

I feel so blessed to have
a beautiful daughter in my life.

Her two favorite colors
is purple and yellow.

So I wanted to bring that into my look,
and also her birth flower.

[Dominic] As an image,
it's really striking.

And here is the perfect example
as to when complementary colors work,

because it makes the purple richer,
and it makes the yellow more vibrant.

The makeup is fierce,
but it's also fearless.

My favorite thing was
when you did the chrysanthemums.

One thing that I'd have to say
is that the symmetry's slightly off.

Yeah.

The shape here is
a little bit thicker above the eye,

and here, it's a little bit thinner.

What I love about you, Dolli,
is you always go the extra mile.

So, with the light,

suddenly it made your makeup 3D,
and I thought that was very clever.

-Thank you.
-[Val] Thank you.

[all applaud]

MUAs, if you'd like to go next door,

myself, Val, and Lisa will be making
the incredibly hard decision

to decide which of you will be going home.

[Maya] The judges now need to decide
which two MUAs have impressed the most

and will go through to the final Face Off.

I mean, it's not purple,
really, it's ultraviolet.

There is an electricity in it.

I hope they like what I did, and they see
I've really grown in this competition.

[Val] He's been adventurous.

-This look is unique.
-It's unique.

To get into the final two,

you've got that one more step
of your life being changed forever.

If I opened any magazine, looked at that,

I would say, "Wow."

Absolutely. She deserves to stay.

[Sophie] I've literally given everything
to this whole competition.

So this is the last little bit.

This is so hard because
both Craig and Dolli have great ideas,

but in the looks they created today,
they just missed some technicalities.

It's going to be a tough call.

[suspenseful music playing]

Have you decided who's in the final two?

We certainly have, tough though it was.

[Maya] Okay.

The two MUAs who will be
going through to the final Face Off

and will compete to be crowned
Britain's Next Makeup Star are...

Sophie...

...and...

...Craig.

[Dolli applauds]

I knew it.

-So, Dolli, sadly, you'll be going home.
-It's okay. It's okay.

But, Dolli, you've excited us so much...

Thank you.

...and you've got so many opportunities
to look forward to.

-Hello!
-Yes.

-Yesterday!
-I know. Yes.

I've come away from this competition
with so many things.

So many wins under my belt as well.

A lot of things I've achieved
and didn't even know I could do.

And that's the biggest prize of all.

[Maya] Ahead of the final Face Off,

the judges look back
at Craig and Sophie's portfolio of work.

Sophie, day one. Straight off the bat!

[Dominic] We got smooth blending.
We got stippling. It's quite advanced.

[both exclaim]

Those colors are incredible.

There is so much detail going on in this.

-Dark, I love it.
-So dark.

[Dominic] It's sticky. It's oozing.

[Val] For me,
this was a definite ding, dong.

[Dominic] Although this was disappointing,

I think we had
fair things to say about it.

[Val] Beautiful blending of color.

She just ran out of time.

[in Italian accent] Oh, darling,
bella donna.

-[laughs]
-It's fantastic. I love it.

[Dominic] This was an incredible makeup.

-Beautiful.
-[in normal voice] That's a ding, dong.

[Val] So, this is where Craig started.
Woody Woodpecker.

[laughs] He had ideas,
and he had imagination.

-[Val] Now, this excited me.
-It was bold.

[Val] I could see attention to detail.

I love this!

[Dominic] What he was starting to do was
venture beyond the normalities of makeup.

[Val] Yeah.

-[Val] Wow!
-Oh!

-I'd never seen anything like it before.
-No.

[Dominic] Technical aspects of layering,
the different colors, different finishes.

Honestly, it's giving me goosebumps.
It is beautiful.

I just love Craig's journey
from week one to this.

[Dominic] The placement of the color,

his incorporation of hints of yellow
and lime green and aqua...

So intelligent.

Craig is going on his own journey

and finding his own references.

[Dominic] Yeah.

[Maya] With a contract to assist

some of the world's
most exciting makeup artists at stake,

they need to prove

they have the technical skills
to deliver under pressure.

And there's no better way to test this
than with a final Face Off.

Let's go.

Yeah.

[Maya] As always, Sophie and Craig will
face off over a set of identical twins.

For your final Face Off,
we want you to create

a full beat.

[suspenseful music playing]

[Dominic] The makeup you do
on the eyes, lips, and cheeks

must consist of one color,

but in various shades,
tints, tones, and hues.

You're gonna have 30 minutes
to complete your final look.

Good luck, my lovelies.

Your time starts now.

[suspenseful music playing]

I want the models to look beautiful.

So, no cakey base, no clumpy lash,

no ungroomed brows.

I wanna see flawless skin,
and you need to work quickly.

-Wow.
-Wow!

[Val] Can we talk about the base?

Sophie's, it's a sheer delight.

It's wafer-thin.

Craig's... It looks a bit thick.

But Craig has gone for a color

that I, personally,
would have gone for, pink,

because it can adapt
so you can create really nice tones.

Okay, you have ten minutes left.

It is so tight.
I can't pick between the two of them.

[Val] But they've got ten minutes left.

Neither one of them has got mascara on.
Neither one of them has got a lip on.

-Full beat.
-[Dominic] Full beat, bring it.

Got to get that lip on.

Just five minutes left now.

[tense music playing]

Five, four, three, two, one.

Brushes down.

I know you want to take a closer look.

[ethereal music playing]

Conflab?

Conflab.

[suspenseful percussive music playing]

We have two very different makeups.

[Val] Craig's gone down
more of the traditional route.

[Dominic] It's glam. It's a red carpet.
It's a little bit evening.

And then on Sophie's...

She's also gone down a glam route,

but there's just
a bit more of an edge to it.

Like, there's small,
dark nuances around the eyes.

[Dominic] We asked for shades,
tints, tones, and hues,

and they both delivered those.

However,

the variety of those differences

is a lot more stronger in one of them.

I do think we've got a clear winner.

I think we do.

Sophie, Craig,

it has been such a pleasure being on
this Glow Up journey with both of you.

You honestly make my heart smile.

So, well done, my honeys.
You should be super proud.

Over the course of this competition,
we've watched you grow in confidence,

and just bring bags of creativity. And...

it's just been
an absolute pleasure and an honor

to watch you grow week on week

into the incredible artists
we have standing in front of us today.

I can't tell you how proud we all are.

There can only be one winner.

And this year's Glow Up winner

is...

...Sophie.

[sweeping music plays]

-Come here.
-[judges applaud]

-I'm so proud of you.
-Well done, darling. That's a ding, dong!

Well done. Honestly.

Oh, my God.
So, my crystals must have worked.

Oh, Sophie!

I'm so happy that this is actually,
like, happening, and it's real.

Nothing really fazes me anymore, so...

It really has changed my life,
like, in all seriousness.

[Craig] This competition
has definitely opened everyone's eyes

to finally see me as a makeup artist.

In the words of Cher,
"You haven't seen the last of me."

[chuckles] Was that really cringe?
I felt it was a bit cringe.

[Sophie] You've really got
to push yourself to the absolute limit

to see how far you can go.
And I have completely done that.

And I believe it now, kind of.
Well, yeah, I have to now, don't I?

I can't really just be like,
"I'm not very good at makeup."

'Cause, yeah, I am.

[sweeping music continues]
