Glow Up: Britain's Next Make-Up Star (2019–…): Season 2, Episode 6 - Strictly Come Dancing - full transcript

Stacey returns to her favourite dancefloor and the MUAs battle it out in Britain's most famous ballroom at Strictly Come Dancing (2004). It's Movie Week and the contestants are asked to design make-up for characters and create a s...

[bright electronic theme music playing]

This week's assignment

has a very special place in my heart.

I'm looking for a big glitter ball.

Right now the MUAs are on their way
to meet me

on Britain's most famous dance floor.

[both grumbling]

And from someone
who's done Strictly themselves,

I would say glitter, gloss and glamour
are in order.

And with the semi-final place at stake,

I reckon the judges
are gonna be stricter than ever.

[Stacey] Strictly Come Dancing
is one of the most popular shows on TV,

attracting around 10 million viewers
each week.

The audience don't just tune in
to watch the dancing.

Strictly is known for its costumes,

glamour and most of all...

the glitter.

-Stacey!
-There she is.

Hi there. Come on out.

How are we doing?

-[James] Good.
-Follow me!

-[James] Oh, my God, this is mad.
-[Stacey laughs]

I am so glad it's Strictly today.

Walking into that ballroom

and just seeing it all lit up
is incredible.

It is such a treat to be back
on this dance floor.

It's my pleasure to introduce

BAFTA award-winning
hair and makeup designer

for Strictly Come Dancing,
it's Lisa Armstrong.

[applause]

[Stacey] Having run
the Strictly Hair and Makeup department

for over 12 years, Lisa is responsible

for creating around 30 original looks
every week.

Leading a small army behind the scenes,

her team are among the best in the biz.

Strictly Come Dancing
is like the biggest entertainment show

on the planet.

It's my job to make everyone look
and feel amazing.

So, the time pressure on Strictly
is insane.

We literally have one hour for makeup,

one hour for hair,

and there's no room for movement.

We are a live show.
They have to go out looking tip-top.

[clapping] It has to get done!

This week is movie week.

Now you'll each be allocated
a different movie

and because Strictly is about couples,

you'll be doing the makeup
on two characters

that need to marry together.

Whatever the movie, it's all about
the glamour. Throw everything at it.

[Ophiia] Cool.

You are in your element.

And whoever impresses the most

will have the incredible opportunity
to work with Lisa backstage

at this week's live show.

-[James] Oh my God.
-Let's meet the models.

[Stacey] Okay, find your stations.

[Ophelia] Hi.

I'm not known for doing glam looks.

I would be excited for this brief

if I was given a film
that I absolutely love.

It might freak me out a little bit

if I did get a film
that I'm not familiar with.

In front of you,
you have your concept documents.

This is the information I'm given
by the producers before the show.

So you have two hours
to come up with a look

and create the style for the couple.

Good luck.

So when we start the week
we have a concept, a dance number,

the music and then the costume.

So, the makeup is so integral

because it brings that character to life.

Brilliant, yes!

[Stacey] Hannah has been given
the characters of Austin Powers

and his love interest, Vanessa Kensington.

Cool and groovy, eh? That screams me.

My mind's going towards glitter
and shiny textures and metallics

and stuff, and then I think
a sort of psychedelic motif

will be something quite easily
I can carry on to my male model.

[Stacey] Delving
into the world of animation,

Ophelia will be creating
the character Pikachu

and his best friend Ash...

What is this?

... from the Pokémon series.

I'm not interested in Pokémon at all.

Okay, I've got Cabaret.

[Stacey] Eve has the characters
of Sally and MC

from the Berlin-set
Oscar winning film, Cabaret.

Although I've not seen the film,
it's quite glamorous makeup.

It is something I feel I'm inspired by.

Oh wow, okay.

[Stacey] James will be creating looks for
Po the Panda, and Master Tigress the Tiger

from the animated film, Kung Fu Panda.

Should be fun. So I'm thinking of going...

Yeah, going large
with the paints on the face.

[Hannah] And then I can do
this "flower power" thing

over your eye.
Put some glitter in there as well.

-Yeah, that'd be good.
-And some Twiggy lashes.

-[Lisa] So, Ophelia.
-Hi.

How do you feel
about creating these characters?

I'm kinda nervous because I don't
really like Pokémon. [laughs]

Oh, slight issue.

Yeah, but, I'm just looking at Pokémon...

You're gonna go from the concept.
Okay. That's fine.

So, you know, I'm just figuring out
how far I should go with it.

Do remember, we are Strictly Come Dancing,

so we are a family entertainment show,

so we need to make it pleasing on the eye.

-Yeah, that's cool.
-[Lisa] Good. Good luck.

[Ophelia] Thank you so much.

It's crazy to think that Lisa has to do
30 of these,

I feel I have my work cut out

just even doing one.

So, my aim, I feel,

would definitely want to give this look
under the hour.

[Hannah] Okay. Let's try this, shall we?

[Ophelia] Is that hard to open?
Is that all right?

-It's quite heavy. It's alright.
-Yeah, it's quite heavy.

[Stacey] While Ophelia steps out
of her comfort zone,

Eve is in her element.

You okay over there on your own?
[laughs]

When I was 14 I got my first job
in the salon. I absolutely love my job.

I love working with the public
and I like working on different faces

and I get to learn so much

and everyone in Liverpool is super glam.

My standard client tends to like
more of a brown smoky eye

than a, you know, fluorescent pink.

I've always wanted to do my own thing
and would love to branch out

and that's what the start of this is,
so I wanna be a better makeup artist.

The more glitter the better, I think
with this. [laughs]

I've literally got glitter
right up to your brow.

[Ophelia] Shall I do you
completely yellow?

Let's try.

Ophelia has got two red cheeks.
How easy or difficult is this to execute?

So, she was right to execute it that way,

draw on the pink cheeks first,

fill them in, and then you can start
patting around the yellow.

[Stacey] So, practically, Ophelia
has really impressed you.

It's just her attitude?

It's just a negativity straight away.

When you're sat in the chair
and panicking about your dance

or you've got a lot going in your mind

and your makeup artist is going,
"I'm not really feeling this."

-You think, "Oh God!"
-That would tip me over the edge.

I'm telling you, this is messing me up.
[laughs]

-James.
-Hey, Stacey girl.

[Stacey] You seem...

very focused, very disciplined
and very optimistic today.

-[James] This is just fun to me.
-[Stacey] I'm loving your energy today!

Ophelia, are you listening to James?

-[Ophelia] Yeah. What?
-James is living his best life over here.

Oh, nice. If only you'd got my film.

I'm worried that my look
won't say "Austin Powers"!

That's what I'm really worried about.
I just have lost all sense of knowing

what I'm doing.

That's one hour gone!

You have one hour left!

[Stacey] By now, the MUAs should be moving
onto their second model.

Yeah, if you guys swap over?

How is Eve doing? She's got Cabaret.

She's got Cabaret.
She's done a really nice job.

I like the fact that she stuck
to the brief.

It's interesting now to see
how she executes a girl makeup

but on a boy, but he still needs to look
like a boy.

It's interesting to see
how they work together as a couple.

Because that's really important, isn't it,

-watching on the stage.
-[Lisa] Exactly.

I'm just concerned.
I think we've probably only got

about 40 minutes, half an hour left
so I want to make sure

that I have at least something
on my other model's face.

That's taken him an hour to do
two black eyes and a white face.

If I was doing a live show, Stace,

I'd be having a meltdown, love!
At the moment it looks like a ghost!

Because it's quite plain...

So, whether you just like stand there
with any sort of iridescent sparkle...

-I knew you were going to say that!
-Blow glitter at it, Stace.

I don't feel like I've done a good job.

I love what Hannah's done with her makeup
and I love the fact

that she's used lots of colour,

but it's not from the concept.

At least if they match
then that's something ticked off.

I'll come back to you later.
I just need to get things moving.

Guys! You have 30 minutes left.

I've now moved on to what will probably be
the more complicated character of my two.

I just have to stay focused
and keep going.

I'm just thinking. Sorry, I'm staring.
[laughs]

So, there's lightning bolts here
so I'm thinking, you know,

even though they look pretty different,
they have the same energy.

I want to bring
some of the lightning bolt in,

in his face and her face as well.

Guys, you have ten minutes left now!

There isn't a second to spare.
I think I can get it done.

[fast tempo beat playing]

Right guys, that's it, time is up!

Oh!

[Lisa] Glitter and brushes down.

MUAs and models, please follow me
to the ballroom.

[Stacey] Assignment over, it's time to see
just how strict the judges are

and find out which MUA
will get to work with Lisa

on the live show.

Okay, so first up we've got Hannah.

[Stacey] Hannah created
flower power-inspired looks

for Austin Powers and Vanessa Kensington.

[Austin Powers theme playing]

So, Hannah I don't actually necessarily
know if you came out on to the dance floor

that you'd go straight away
"That is Austin Powers."

I preferred what you'd done on the guy.

I feel like you Strictly-fied him
more than you did with your lady.

So, what I would've done,
is I would've gone with

the actual '60s cut eye,
done a nice big flicky eyeliner.

I do like the idea of the big bold flower
on the eye

but unfortunately it doesn't look like
a flower, it looks more like a germ.

Thanks very much. Thank you.

[Stacey] Bringing Po and Master Tigress

from Kung Fu Panda to life was James.

[Kung Fu Panda theme playing]

It's not very Strictly.

Your tiger doesn't have no stripes.

[Val] Where's the glitter?
Where's the glam?

It's like, "throw the glitter at it."

"Bring on the glitter," thank you.

[Stacey] Eve created
the Berlin club characters

of Sally and MC from the film Cabaret.

[Cabaret theme playing]

If that walked onto the Strictly floor
and it was under my watch,

I'd be very pleased.

You've stuck to the brief beautifully

and you've executed the makeup
beautifully.

That means the world to me,
thank you so much.

Very good job.

[Eve] Thank you.

[Stacey] Ophelia created looks
for Pikachu and Ash

from the world of Pokémon.

[Pokémon theme music playing]

Great job. I love the glitter.

I could see the glitter
halfway up the stairs. Tick.

I love the lightning bolt,

I think it is really effective

and I like the fact you married it

to your male model.

My one bit of advice to you would be,
you have to stay in a positive manner.

As soon as I came to you,
you were like, "I don't like the film,"

which is negative.
I can't have that on my team.

I'm not asking you to like it.

I'm asking you to execute it.

It's really outrageous.

You know, it's not cool.
It's not professional.

-Thank you.
-Sorry about that.

-Thank you.
-Thanks again.

[Ophelia] The judges, they seemed happy
with the look

but they made a very big comment
of me being unprofessional

in front of the models.

So, you know,
that kinda put me down a little bit

because I do take professionalism
quite seriously.

What are we thinking?

Well, I express myself
in a very straightforward way.

If I don't like something, I say it.

It was never meant that way, but you know...

I, in my mind, have a clear winner.

[Stacey] Follow me to the ballroom.

So, welcome back guys
to the Strictly ballroom.

You all did a really great job.

But for me there was one standalone winner

and I feel this winner
absolutely brought the character to life

and also they Strictly-fied their concept.

For that reason, the winner today is...

Eve!

[applause]

Congratulations,
and you'll be assisting me

and I would like to take that design
and concept and use it on the live show.

-Welcome to the team.
-[laughing] Thank you.

-[Lisa] Congratulations.
-[cheering]

Thank you.

You'll have the most incredible time.
I'm so excited for you.

Ding dong. Marvelous! Well done, Eve!

That is brilliant.

I'm absolutely over the moon.
This is a massive confidence boost for me.

It's definitely what I needed,

especially at this point
in the competition.

The fact that it's Strictly as well,
it's just amazing.

It's glitz, it's glamorous,
it's covered in glitter.

I cannot wait to go backstage
and see how everything works.

Eve, do you wanna come over?
This is Giovanni, this is Eve.

-Hi, nice to meet you. I'm Giovanni.
-Lovely to meet you.

[Stacey] As well as working backstage
at the live show,

Eve gets to see pro dancer, Giovanni,

and former guest judge, Michelle Visage,

wear the look she created.

-[Michelle] Hi, Eve.
-Hi!

-How're you, love?
-[Eve] I'm doing good.

It's good to see you here.

I'm so happy I won the assignment,
I'm so grateful to be here today.

It's so nice 'cause you don't really
get to see everything backstage

and see how everything works,
and it's just really interesting.

[Lisa] Step back and have a look
in the mirror, it looks incredible.

That looks gorge.

[Lisa] Let me see you.

[Michelle] Yeah, cute.

-Yes!
-[Eve laughs]

[Stacey] Next morning at Glow Up HQ,

the judges must decide which two MUAs

failed to hit the brief
and will start the day

in the Face Off chairs.

At this stage it's really hard
'cause there's only four left.

I think that Ophelia did a great job

on the yellow application.

Yeah. She has done a good job,

-but her attitude stinks.
-[Dominic] Yeah.

When you give James a brief...

more often than not he falls apart.

He just doesn't come up to par.

[Lisa] He should've kept her own skin.

And then used the markings.

Gold, orange, black...

to make the markings of a tiger.

The tiger has no stripes!

[Lisa] Let's go on to Hannah then.

There is nothing really Austin Powers
about this,

other than the peace sign,

and even then
that's a bit of a loose connection.

Yes, après vous.

[MUAs whispering]

Morning, judges.

[Stacey] If an MUA's name
is on the red chair,

they're headed for
the Face Off elimination

at the end of the day.

Oh!

[sighs] Thank God.

So, James, Hannah, unfortunately
you do find yourselves

in our Face Off chairs.

But if you impress us today
and deliver something amazing

with your creative brief,
you can get yourself out of those chairs.

So, bring it.

Yesterday you brought movie characters
to life.

Today we want you to transform your model

into a superhero.

You should also consider
your character's backstory and powers,

and remember, we will be scrutinising
your skill.

Bring in the models!

[Stacey] Unlike yesterday,
the MUAs have been able

to prepare for today's creative brief

and have each been supplied

with a model at random.

[Eve] I'm so glad you've got blue eyes.

MUAs, you've two and a half hours
to bring your looks to life.

James, Hannah, of course
you get 15 minutes less than the others,

I'll let you know when you can start.
Eve, Ophelia, your time starts now.

[quick tempo cymbal beat]

[humming]

My superhero is based on the concept

that knowledge is power.

If everyone had more knowledge

then the things we could do
would be unreal.

Talk me through your concept.

[Hannah] She is a sea dwelling spirit
that has been under the water

for centuries and she's kind of watched
how humanity's treated women

as a second class citizen
for years and years.

-She has had enough!
-[Hannah] She's had enough!

[Hannah] I'm not using any prosthetics
as a crutch.

-[Stacey] I was gonna ask you.
-None.

-Which actually I think is quite good.
-Yes, I need to show

that I am actually versatile.

[Ophelia] Today I'm doing a character
called Karma.

She has the ability to be invisible.

I'm doing illusion makeup

and she's going to blend
into a black background.

-This will be a tight game.
-[Dominic] Mm.

A very tight game.

James, Hannah, you're good to start.

[James] I'm basically creating
the tree of life Celtic hero.

If I was to have a power,
I'd reverse what's happened to the world.

The superpower would be to help bring back
the forests.

-Oh, I just saw a blender go in.
-Someone's got a blender going.

-Soup anyone?
-[laughs]

There's corks. They're small and light.
They're not small enough for the texture

I wanna create.

Blending them up is just a quick way
to crush them up.

[rattling]

That's the blender.

[grinding]

Hi James. What's the thought process
behind this?

[James] I'm gonna use cork with adhesive

up over the chin and on to the start
of my model's face.

How d'you feel? Have you had cork
on your face before? [laughs]

-I don't think so.
-[James] Be the cork.

"Cork!"

Have you had cork
on your face before?

I am just perfecting

a really nice solid black canvas.

I would've done the black waterline first.

[Val] Yeah, it would've been easier.

It's difficult to go in without getting...

your finger on the makeup.

-She should've done both waterlines.
-It's a rookie mistake.

-[Stacey] Hi, Eve.
-Hi.

Talk me through your concerns

with this bald cap.

It's a little bit lumpy.
But you know, brains are bumpy.

Brains are bumpy.

That's what I'm drawing over it

-so, you don't have a really smooth brain.
-Certainly not me. [laughs]

It looks really effective, there's...

-I think the word is, "interesting."
-[Lisa] Yeah.

"Effective" is not the word yet.

So now I'm just covering the corks

with a thin little layer of tissue,

so that the corks almost don't look like
corks.

You get more of the rock effect underneath
the ground.

The technique and the thought process
of using this unconventional product

-to create an unconventional thing...
-[Lisa] Look, yeah.

I've never seen this before.

[James] The next step is the base.
This week is vital.

Like, this brings us into the semi-final.

I want to be there.

Yes.

-Ophelia.
-Hi.

I have never seen a mood board

more Ophelia than this.

-[Ophelia laughs] Oh God, don't say that!
-[Stacey] Welcome to Ophelia's mind.

Thanks! Actually, when I was young,

I actually bumped into a ghost.

That's actually
the main inspiration behind this.

-Oh, you did? Where?
-Yeah.

In Hong Kong. It looked like an old lady.

Oh, what d'you think
she wanted to do with you?

Maybe she just want to say "hi"

that's what I always tell myself.

-Ophelia!
-[Ophelia] I know.

Um, good. I feel like I know you
a bit more, Ophelia.

-Yay!
-[Stacey laughs]

MUAs, that's one hour gone.

One hour.

[electronic beat intensifies]

[James] Hour and a half left.

He does love a blend,
he loves a nice smooth blend of colours.

But the problem is sometimes
he overblends it.

[Eve] I'm just using a bit of floss

to mark out the center of the face.

Dom's one for symmetry, so I thought:

"How d'you draw a straight line
on a bumpy face?"

You can't, so I just thought "floss."

It's a clever way to stop that line

-from veering off.
-[Lisa] Okay.

But you know, she's had over an hour
and we've got just two little brown lines.

Other than a bald cap.

Can you breathe? Great.

[Ophelia] I am going upwards
because the most white

is going to be at the end of the brush

and as I push up, the white is going to

slowly blend in to the black

so it gives a really nice gradient.

Ophelia is truly enjoying

the artistry of what she's doing.

[Eve] This is the actual brain bit
that I'm drawing on now.

Can you turn? Look this side.

[gasps]

[gasping]

-[Val] That is beyond, you can see it.
-[Lisa] That is insane.

Feeling myself well up.
It's so impressive!

[Val] It's a piece of fabric, a curtain...

-It's like it's 3D, isn't it?
-[Val sighs]

Guys, that's ten minutes left.

-[Ophelia] No, it's not.
-Jokes! [laughs]

Stace, you've got to be...

Have you seen where I'm at?
I'm already struggling. I hate you!

[Stacey laughing]

You horrible woman!

You've got one hour left.

I'm enjoying doing it.
I am worried about time, not gonna lie.

I'm working on the face bit
which is sort of meant to be futuristic

and alien-like and, uh, slightly robotic.

It's so messy. Look, there's no detail

in the execution here.

It feels like all this is just
painting by numbers:

stripe the black, stripe the blue,
stripe the grey.

[James] So I'm just adding some moss.

I love doing this,

even though it is a harder look to do
and I've never done it before.

I'm not too stressed at the moment

because so far it's going well.

This look definitely has put me

out of my comfort zone a bit.

I am just nervous in general
with how it's gonna look

as the finished thing.

MUAs, you have 20 minutes left.

Last 20 minutes.

Twenty minutes, that's tough.

Yeah, I have lots to do.

They are odd.

I'm guessing it's ovaries.

And is that white dot gonna be
some kinda vajazzle?

[Hannah] Oh, thank God.

So here I've done a really simplistic moon

and the light that it casts on the ocean.

I feel like the moon is almost like

a symbol of anything that's supernatural.

I am just a little scared that she may
have spoiled it. It was nicer before.

-[Lisa] You're absolutely right.
-I don't agree.

MUAs, you have two minutes left.

Two minutes.

Everyone's in a panic.

I've given it my best shot.

I'm happy with what I was able to deliver

with 15 minutes less as well.

Time is up.
Stop what you're doing, please.

Pop everything down. That's us.

-Oh my God.
-What?

Ophelia...

That is going to be epic.

Can you take your models next door

where they will be photographed?
Thank you.

We're gonna start with Ophelia.
Would you like to come up?

[Ophelia] My superhero has the ability

to be invisible.

[Val] It's absolutely
gobsmackingly gorgeous.

Thank you.

The way you've put in
the sort of like darkness in through here,

underneath the white,

it's really pushed that image

off the page.

Ding dong. That was absolutely marvelous!

Thank you.

I love the moon

and it just brings it all together

and I think it's better for it.

So, incredible work.

Really incredible work.

-Thank you.
-[applause]

Eve, would you like to come up?

[Eve] The concept of my superhero
was based on "knowledge is power"

and I just believe that if everyone
in the world had more knowledge,

the world could be a better place
and we could do good things.

Yesterday you were, like, star pupil,

but today I just feel like you just were
a little bit out of your depth.

Yeah.

[Lisa] The image photographs much better
than it reads in person.

I just felt like across
the whole of the top of skull

it was just a bit messy

and there was really no finesse

in your swirls of the brain.

I'm not sure that this is worthy

-of getting you through to the semi-final.
-I agree.

And I'm just disappointed.

[Eve] Yeah, thanks.

James, please step forward.

[James] I gave my superhero
the name Cuvi, which means "power."

Druids always had the tree of life
in the center of their monasteries

and it was a sign of strength, protection
and resilience.

I have to say, I absolutely love it.

It is so courageous, it is so different.

You're a visionary, not a replicator.

[Lisa] You were focused, you were driven

and you were absolutely on point.

Where was all of this yesterday?

-[applause]
-Thank you.

[Dominic] Hannah,
would you like to come forward?

She's an ancient sea dwelling spirit.

She's finally swimming up to the surface

to bestow her mind control

and telekinetic powers onto Earth.

The shape is inspired by medical drawings

of ovaries because it's a symbol
of feminine strength.

I love the story.

I also really love the way
you've used the female reproductive system

within your design,
I think it's really clever.

The downside of it is I feel like
it's a little lackluster.

There's a minimalism to it

which I think is unfortunate

because others have done something

really elaborate.

I love the fact that I can see a human
in there, I can see the skin.

I like the shine on the skin,

I think that looks really fresh.

The thing that I think that lets it down

is it's not precise.

I see black paint on that pearl.

Last minute...

Not good enough. You're better than that.

-[Val] Thank you.
-Thank you.

Thank you MUAs.

If you could please go next door
whilst we decide

who goes into the Face Off elimination.

[MUAs sighing]

She spent so much time doing
yet another bald cap, and I wonder why.

This is the time that you deliver
something you know you can do

so you can get into that semi-final.

I like seeing the skin
but I just think the technique

is somewhat naive and sloppy.

This could've been incredible,
if it was perfectly symmetrical.

This truly is a 3D makeup.

Ah, just inspired! The man is...

The man's clever.

[dramatic music playing]

[sighs] Thank you MUAs for your patience.

So James, Hannah, obviously you started
this morning in the Face Off chairs.

The question is, have you done enough
to convince the judges that another MUA

should be sent
into that Face Off elimination?

James, we loved your story
and the innovative techniques

that you used to create your superhero.

James, you've beat the seat.

[sighs] Thank you.

Hannah, we loved seeing a different style
of work from you,

but your symmetry was off

and your line work had flaws.

So once again Hannah,

-you will be in the Face Off elimination.
-It's okay.

The second MUA going head to head
with Hannah had a great concept

but it wasn't executed well,

nor was it technically precise.

So, Eve...
you'll be in the Face Off elimination.

Judges, as always, thank you ever so much.
We'll be in shortly.

[Val] Thank you.

Girls, say your goodbyes.

-One of you won't be coming back.
-Yeah, we know.

I've never been in the Face Off
but it's not over yet.

Yeah, my creative brief
was not good enough

but I still have one more opportunity
and that's really exciting.

-Do your best guys.
-[Ophelia] Do your best.

I'm scared, you know.
There's a high chance I'll go home today.

I hope that this isn't the last
you're gonna see of me.

I intend to be back next week.

-Good luck guys.
-[James] Good luck.

[Stacey] As always, Hannah and Eve

will Face Off over a pair
of identical twins.

This week has been all about glitz
and glamour, so for your Face Off,

you'll have ten minutes to produce
the perfect glitter lip.

As you know, glitter can get everywhere,

today we want you to contain the glitter
to within the lip.

So no messy edges.

We are looking for balance, precision
and symmetry.

We want bold colours, sharp edges.

Make no mistake, we will be scrutinising
your every technique.

I wanna see a sharp, precise, balanced lip
with full-on glitter.

Firstly, they need
to get that lip colour on.

Then you can use a lip pencil
to sharpen up the edge,

creating more precision and balance.

Following this, you want to apply

a very fine layer of lip gloss.
This is gonna help the glitter

to adhere to the lip.
Finally, you want to use

a medium-size eye shadow applicator brush
to pick up that glitter

and press it to the lip, and that glitter
should go hard up to the lip line.

I don't wanna see any messy edges.

MUAs, best of luck both of you.

Your time starts now.

[rapid tempo electronic music]

[Val] What I liked about what Eve did
was, straight away, she went in

with the powder on the sponge
so that she could secure

her droppage area.

I thought that was nice work.

[Dominic] Hannah, she's got it on quick
so she's then got more time to clean up,

so really,
they're two different techniques

but they're both doing a great job.

Girls, that's us halfway through,

you've got five minutes left.

[Dominic] Hannah got that lip on
really quick.

Then she's mixed the mixing glue
in the glitter which has then created

almost like a paste,
so when you paint it on

it just goes patchy, and you don't get
that solid sparkle.

One minute left.

Five...

four...

three...

two... one.

Girls, stop what you're doing please.

Pop your brushes down.

Judges, I'm certain you'll want
a closer look.

[Val] Absolutely.

Conflab?

Conflab.

There's pros and cons for both lips.

Eve has done a perfect red lip line, tick.

But the glitter is not going to the edge.

I don't agree.

Hannah created a good shape,
but it's not symmetrical.

There is a bit missing.

And then she added gloss.

We didn't ask for a glossy lip,
we asked for a glitter lip.

I think Eve has got it.

See, I don't.

We're not gonna decide this, are we?

Going in for one last look.

She's ruthless.

I don't care what she decides,
I'm not changing my mind.

Well?

-You still haven't decided?
-I think we're gonna have to look at

the creative brief.

We have to look at the creative brief.

Because, you know, it's...it's equals.

[Dominic] For me, it would be Eve
because it's bigger, it's bolder,

she brought in some really gorgeous
deep blue tones that harmonised

with that silver.

It's a very classic
futuristic alien-y colour tone.

I mean, she bit off
more than she could chew,

but she gave it a good go
and that, to me,

says a lot about a makeup artist.

I would probably go for Hannah.

The colours were vibrant.

You know, her sense of colour theory
is exceptionally good.

She brought all those colours together,

she used the black
to further strengthen the shape,

and I liked the way you had
this fresh, wet skin.

I liked the way it had
an element of a mask

because that was giving me
the superhero element.

That was the brief.

[Dominic sighs]

This has been extremely hard.

[uptempo electronic music playing]

MUAs...

it has been a really tough decision.

You both delivered lips
with pros and cons.

Hannah, your lip was well balanced
and the glitter really went to the edge,

but the gloss just dulled the sparkle.

Eve, you gave a big bold lip,
and the lip line was super precise.

[sighs] But the glitter was really patchy.

We couldn't make a decision

so we had to go back
and look at your creative briefs.

It has split us.

But I think we've managed to agree.

[music intensifies]

You will both be going into
the semi-final.

[laughter]

-[Stacey] This is a first!
-[Dom] It was a tough one.

Come here, Han.

I...

I am speechless.

Waiting for the judges to decide
felt like it went on for days.

I cannot wait to tell everyone
I'm in the semi-final.

Oh my goodness me, girls.

Congratulations!

Today has shown that there really is
no room for error.

It's time to bring our best
and make sure that we pay attention

to every little detail that we're doing.

Hi guys.

-Oh my God!
-[laughing]

[murmuring]

Yeah!

[Hannah] That was the longest deliberation
in the world.

Oh my God, well done!

Girls, just a massive congratulations.

I cannot quite believe it but somehow

both of you have managed to secure a place
in this year's semi-final.

I don't think I've ever had
such a disagreement with you ever before.

[Val] We were both passionate
because we need to make sure

that the right artist goes through.

Oh my God, what an amazing group
for a semi-final!

[end theme music playing]
