Glow Up: Britain's Next Make-Up Star (2019–…): Season 2, Episode 5 - Special Effects - full transcript

Can these contenders cut it? They better brush up on realistic bruises for the TV medical drama "Holby City" before they conjure nightmares in paint.

[upbeat electronic music playing]

[Stacey] Today the MUAs are getting ready
for their next assignment

and I have an urgent message for them.

[James] Let's have a look.

Oh God, it's a video.

Guys, there's been a bit of an emergency.

I have had a fall, I'm gonna have to go
straight to hospital.

You're gonna have to meet me there.
Not just any old hospital...

Holby City Hospital.

[MUAs screaming]

It's the Elstree Studios,
because we're about to enter the world

-of special effects.
-[MUAs screaming]

[Stacey] Our hosts, this week: Holby City.

Now in its 20th year,

the award winning drama is packed
with medical storylines,

showcasing makeup and prosthetics
at their best.

Coming in today, our MUAs have to scrub up

and show us that they can cut it

in the world of TV special effects.

If you work on a medical drama,

you may be asked to create
a simple bruise, deep gashes,

prosthetic body pieces.

You name it, they will ask for it.

-You can see all the fat and everything.
-Touch it.

-[screaming]
-[Dominic] I don't wanna touch it.

-[Val screaming]
-[Dominic laughing]

Is that like a brain scan or something?

-Morning, MUAs.
-Morning.

[MUAs laughing]

This is our Dr. Dom and Dr. Val.

[Stacey] As well as having to impress
Glow Up's resident judges,

the MUAs will also need to satisfy
today's guest judge.

It's my pleasure to introduce
the head of prosthetics here at Holby City

and of course your boss for the day
is Megan Thomas.

Hi guys,
and welcome to the set of Holby City.

[Stacey] Megan's career has seen her work
on iconic films,

including Men In Black, Aladdin,

and Cinderella.

[Megan] Special effects isn't just
a form of makeup.

It is art.

It's challenging.

Attention to detail is everything.

The MUAs will need to go that extra mile,
use their time correctly

because if they're rushed,
that will affect the end result.

Welcome to the set of Holby City.

Today you've been booked to do makeup
on some of the extras on the show.

The characters have been in a fight
and I need you to create realistic wounds

and injuries on them.
I'm looking for realistic colouring

and bruising, blood effects
and flawless blending of prosthetic edges.

And, I'm also looking for how you act
around your actor.

It's vitally important that you bring
each character's specific look to life

because there's a very exciting reward.

The two MUAs that deliver
the most convincing looks

will have their work televised

and the opportunity to see their work

as it's filmed later on today.

[Stacey] To give the technical knowledge
needed to work with prosthetics,

first for the MUAs is a short demo
from Megan.

[Megan] You just wanna decide
where you're gonna apply it.

I'm gonna put a bit of glue there,
just to anchor it

and you're gonna dry the glue.

It has to go clear
before you stick it down.

[hair dryer blowing]

It's very important to learn
as many skills as possible

'cause you never know
what's going to be thrown at you.

You have to be really aware
of how your actor's feeling,

keeping their eyes closed
when you're applying certain products.

When I'm happy that it's stuck,
I'm going to dissolve this edge

with the acetone.

Not only will the MUAs
have to attach the prosthetic seamlessly,

they'll also need to use colour,
blending the piece

to match the actor's skin tone.

I'm going in with the blue here.

[Stacey] Finally, bruise paints
and fake blood finish the look.

They've just been in a fight,
so it's fresh bruising.

[Dominic] There is a whole colour theory
around bruising,

about how old it is, where the blood
is moving around under the skin.

We are talking real technicalities.

So, this is a real quick demo.

This is just to give you an example
of how to do each step.

Okay, we're in here.

[Stacey] The MUAs need to apply
these techniques with precision and speed

as they only have 90 minutes
to complete the assignment.

Your time starts now.

-What's your name?
-Adam.

-Oh, I'm Eve! [laughs]
-Nice to meet you.

[Stacey] Each MUA has been given
a different brief for their actor.

James's character
has been punched in the eye.

The assaulter had a large ring
on one of their fingers

making an incision into the skin.

The punching has made a strong bruise.

[Stacey] Ophelia is preparing to apply

her first ever professional prosthetic.

The upper lip has a deep cut.

There is a strong bruise along the jaw,
spreading into the neck.

[Stacey] The MUAs have each been given
three prosthetics but it's down to them

to decide how many they need
to achieve their look.

I don't know if I'm doing it right

but I'm gonna try.

[Stacey] What Ophelia lacks in experience
with prosthetics, she hopes to make up for

with one of her passions.

[Ophelia] I love a lot of gore.

I love horror films. [laughs]

My early makeup memory was Halloween

because that was the only time
that I'm allowed to put makeup on.

I love special effects
because to create something that realistic

is an art form.
It's something that is mind-blowing to me.

[Ophelia] Do you guys have razors around?

I literally have no idea. I'm sorry.

[Stacey] If the prosthetics are placed
correctly they should be the perfect fit.

Right cheek... so it's some swelling
on that side going on.

[Stacey] Berny's actor had a heavy item
thrown at her head.

There'll also be some strong bruising

on one side of her face
with some small cuts.

I've had training in it before
but I just need to try and focus and...

Yeah.

[Stacey] Eve's attaching her prosthetic
with a special adhesive.

I'm gonna work in some glue,

so keep your eyes closed for me
because they're quite fumy.

[Stacey] Her character brief
involves a broken nose

as does, prosthetic enthusiast, Hannah's.

[Hannah] Oh gosh.

The acetone's melting
the bottom of these pots. [scoffs]

My dream job would be
working in film and TV doing prosthetics,

especially in a horror genre.

I'm not trained,

it's just my own self-taught skill.

I can make prosthetics out of papier-mâché
and sponges.

[Stacey] Thirty minutes in, she's moved
onto the most crucial and difficult phase:

dissolving the edges.

It's really cool using a real prosthetic.
They're like...

The way that the edges blend,
it's so realistic.

I love it. It's great.

[Stacey] Not everyone's feeling
so positive.

I'm looking at how they treat their actor

and being aware of safety
in the materials that they're using.

[Berny] Didn't see that there.
I'm so sorry.

It's alright. Don't worry about it.

-[Berny gasps]
-Just carry on.

-I'm really sorry.
-It's okay.

Who's at the bottom of the chart
for you, right now?

[Megan] Unfortunately,
Berny's kind of struggling.

He's spilt some adhesive on her lap.

[Stacey] Oh, I didn't realize.

[tense beat playing]

Um, I need some of this stuff.

He just hasn't grasped it.

It's upside down. His edges aren't great.

-The prosthetic's upside down?
-Yeah.

When a piece has been made for a person,

then it will have to fit
on the particular side

or place that it's been cast for
or made for.

-Does that feel OK? Does that hurt?
-It's fine.

I just want to re-evaluate
where I'm gonna put it.

-Cool, was that OK? Yeah?
-You're very careful.

Amazing.

Didn't wanna pull your skin

-or anything, yeah.
-Just rip it off.

Right.

I think I'm doing it correctly now.

[Stacey] The prosthetic is still
upside down and on the wrong side.

I'm happy with my placement now.

[Stacey] Hannah. How's she doing?

It looks like she hasn't applied
the second piece,

so that could go against her.

The MUAs should be looking at spending
half their time on applying

and the rest of the time
with colouring and effects.

OK guys, that's an hour gone.
You've got 30 minutes left.

[Ophelia screaming]

That was an hour? That's, um...

That's crazy.

[Stacey] With time running out,
Berny is still no closer

to painting his prosthetic.

-Hi Berny, how you getting on?
-I'm not feeling good about it.

I'm not happy with the edges.

Well, just focus on the next step.
Just because, think of your time.

I'm gonna just focus on my painting now.

-This is the bit that I like doing, so...
-Brilliant.

[Stacey] Hannah's on the final stage,

bringing her injuries to life
by adding fake blood.

[Hannah] Bruises can be yellow,
can't they?

-[Eve] Yeah.
-[Hannah] Cool.

[Hannah] I spent too long doing this one
but it is done... well.

If I do say so myself.

[Eve] Stop saying you're doing well
'cause it's stressing me out.

[laughs] Sorry. Are you okay?

[Eve] I keep asking people just to do
a bit shitter in this competition.

And everyone's like, "Nah, I wanna win."

I'm considering
whether it's better to stop at this point,

leave the small cut to the face.

I don't wanna do one amazing
and then one really terribly.

Because this looks pretty wounded anyway.

So...

I'm hoping that I won't be too penalized
for that.

Have you got a bruise wheel over here?
I need it quick.

[James] Go for it.

[Stacey] Berny is the last MUA
to add blood

and bruises to his actor.

I feel one side looks realistic
and one side doesn't

and I'm on a time limit.

The competition's
at stake, so I just wanna focus.

Girls... Five minutes left.

[Hannah] Uh-oh.

[beat intensifies]

I need to focus.

[Ophelia whines]

OK, guys. Brushes down, your time is up.

This is the first time I've felt happy
with what I've done.

Do you look pretty? [laughs]

Don't even look at it. Don't look at it.

-[Ophelia] I wanna see.
-I don't care.

[Stacey] As the Holby cast and crew gather
to shoot the day's scenes,

it's time for the judges
to fight it out themselves

and decide which two MUAs' actors
will be chosen for the filming.

Up first, James's actor
with a punch to the eye.

If you come in with a gash on your head

you would've covered it, so there would be
a transferal of gloopy blood in her hair,

some maybe dripping down her face.

Around the eye,

I don't know if the bruising
is that convincing.

[Megan] Looks a bit pretty, his bruising.

Eve's done a really good job.

I can't really see any edges,
which is great.

Um, her use of colour on the piece...
It's blending nicely with the skin tone.

I love the fact she's thought about

how the body would have reacted

-to that sort of trauma.
-Very believable.

Hannah's actor had a broken nose

and a cut to the face.

[Megan] There were two pieces
that should have been applied here,

so the brief hasn't been fulfilled.

The issue here
is that she hasn't understood

the colour theory of injured skin.

It kind of looks a bit yellowy

and that's kind of like a three, four,
maybe a five day old bruise.

If she's been in a big fight,
I'd have thought there'd be some tears.

[Stacey] Next up, Ophelia.

[Megan] They got punched on the mouth,

caught the edge of the table
and creating a larger cut.

Edges...

-[gasps]
-[judges laugh]

That was amazing.

Turn your head this way slightly.

I think she's fulfilled the brief.

I like where she's paid attention
to the detail.

-Little veins, broken capillaries...
-[Megan] Yeah, her bruising's lovely.

[Stacey] Last up, Berny.

His brief had large swelling and bruising
on the right side of the face

with some small cuts.

It's actually on the wrong side
of the face.

[Dominic] Oh my God.

And the piece is upside down.

-Oh, I see.
-[Megan] That's why it looks puckered...

[Dominic] That part at the bottom,
should have gone from the nose.

[Megan] And then the big swelling
would have been on the jaw,

and then he's come in with bruising
but highlighted the edge even more.

And also, he's got on the second piece
but, for some reason,

he's put it over here and given her
a black eye, which isn't on the brief.

It sort of, doesn't work on any level,
really, does it?

-[Megan] No.
-[Dominic sighs]

[Stacey] It's time
for the judges' verdict.

[Val] So guys, thank you for today.

There was some great work.

But the two MUAs who impressed me the most

and whose actors will be appearing
on the show today are...

Eve and Ophelia.

-[applause]
-[Ophelia screaming]

-[Megan] Well done, guys.
-[Eve] I've won something!

[laughter]

I'm so happy! Thank you so much.

-[Megan] See there's not much colour here?
-[Ophelia] Yeah.

-And he needs a lot more blood.
-Yeah, I know.

You've only got a couple of minutes
in checks on TV,

so you have to move really quickly.

-It's almost like, smeared.
-Yeah.

He would have touched it with his hands.

[Ophelia] To be here
on such a long-running TV show,

it's amazing.

Let's put them back in. They're calling.
Let's go and watch on the monitors.

[director] Action!

Being on the set of Holby City,
it's a really proud moment of mine.

And, cut.

-Happy?
-Yes.

You see, the blood just brings it forward.

Yeah.

[director] Reset, guys.

I would love to work on something
like this. This would be amazing.

[Stacey] At Glow Up HQ,
the judges must decide

which two MUAs underperformed

in yesterday's task,

landing themselves in the red chairs

and first in line

for the Face Off elimination.

[Dominc] So, shall we have a look
at Berny?

I think he's just rushed ahead
instead of figuring out

what he was gonna actually do.

[Val] It looks like it's been stuck on.

It looks like a blister plaster
that you put on your ankle.

Hannah didn't fulfill the brief,
'cause she hasn't got the second piece on.

She hasn't got black eyes.

Her edges are quite good

but the colour of the piece is just wrong.

Shall we have a look at James?

[Megan] I was disappointed
because it looks too pretty.

It's not mottled.

Um, it doesn't look like a bruise,
like real life, to me.

[Dominic] No.

[Stacey] We'll make a move?

-Yeah.
-Good luck.

Thank you.

I'm 100% sure that I'm gonna be
in the Face Off chair.

I need to make sure I don't let
my over-panicked mind get the best of me.

Okay.

[suspenseful music playing]

[Stacey] If the MUA's name is on
one of the two red chairs,

they're heading into
the Face Off elimination

at the end of the day.

There is still one way
to escape the Face Off:

Blow the judges away in the creative brief

and hope another MUA underachieves
and takes their place.

Berny, Hannah, you find yourselves
in our Face Off chairs.

This means you'll have 15 minutes less

than everyone else to complete your look.

Yesterday you used prosthetics

to create realistic wounds and bruising.

Today, we want you to create
a horrifying look

that embodies your worst nightmare,

fear or phobia.

You should tell us a terrifying tale

and it must represent a concept

that is personal to you.

Are you ready?

Bring in the models.

[heavy bass line playing]

[Stacey] Unlike yesterday,
the MUAs have been allowed to prepare

for the creative brief
and have been supplied

with the model to suit their look.

OK, MUAs, you have two and a half hours

to nail this creative brief.

Best of luck...

and your time starts now.

[Stacey] As well as the prosthetics
they need for their designs,

there's a selection of spares
for them to choose from.

[sighing] OK, right.

So, my look is actually inspired
by a parasitic infestation.

On a personal level, it's about emotions,

sort of like, eating you inside out.

Right.

[Stacey] The MUAs are all using
at least one prosthetic.

But Ophelia is using six.

She may be over egging it.
She's going big or going home.

That's Ophelia.

Do you know where the plug is?

Where's the plug?

Oh, come on.

Ah, I've found it.

I'm just blind, all along.

[Eve] My look is based
on the fear of the sea.

I've have this imagination

that this would be lurking
under the water.

It'd have its hand out of the water
like, "Help, I'm drowning,"

Then you'd go and help it
and it'd pull you under and you'd die.

This looks like a very big piece

to be softening
and blending those edges, doesn't it?

When I was younger,
I was chased by a peacock.

Really?

Yeah. I'm, like, still to this day,
I'm still petrified of them.

Like, petrified of peacocks.

The thing I'm a bit worried about is like,
it's a weird fear to have.

-[Dominic] What would your fear be?
-The dark.

Being in a shut room,
not being able to see.

I genuinely have a fear of
lollipop sticks.

Like, wooden...

-Lollipop sticks?
-I do. Just...

Just the thought...

-I can't deal with it.
-He needs to get out more.

-Are you alright?
-Yeah, I think I am alright.

Good. Tell me a bit about your concept.

I am definitely trypophobic,
so that's lots of small holes...

What does this mean?

-You know, like crumpets?
-Yeah, I love crumpets.

Is that your worst nightmare?

Looking at them,
it makes me feel uncomfortable.

It's the little holes
all up close together

-and it must come from...
-Is that a common phobia?

-Trypophobia, I think is common, yeah.
-I've never heard of this before.

-Really?
-Yeah, I'm so unfamiliar.

Well my model's afraid of it too, so...

-Stop it! I'm outnumbered here.
-[Hannah laughs]

How do you feel about
this going on your face?

I'm a bit nervous
but I'm sure it will be OK.

-You're in safe hands.
-[Hannah laughs]

Hannah, Berny, you can begin.

[Stacey] Despite struggling
with a large prosthetic yesterday,

Berny's gone for another one today

to transform his model's forehead.

[Berny] I wanted to go dark fantasy

and give it that scary forehead.

I've never actually used
a foam piece before,

so, this is a first for me.

So, we'll see how it goes.

[Stacey] After escaping the Face Off
last week,

Hannah's hoping her homemade prosthetics
will pull her through again.

Hannah is using a glue gun

to create a DIY eyepiece.

Hannah's going in with tin foil...

so, she's going back to what she knows,

which is things you find in the kitchen.

[Megan] I like the 3D effect
that it's got to it.

It's very courageous that she's made
this piece out of glue.

-James.
-Stacey, my hon.

[Stacey] Talk me through
your concept, please.

When I was 3, I got rammed over by a goat.

It was pretty traumatic

-and I fractured a few of my ribs.
-Oh no, that is serious!

I picture this creature in my mind.

[Stacey] Our model doesn't have a goatee,
a beard.

[James] I have some yak hair.

Yak hair? Is this, like, actual yak hair?

-Yes.
-From a yak?

-And that really does smell like a farm.
-Yeah.

It's all glamour here.

Oh, my God!
My worst nightmare just happened.

What? A mouse?

No, I went into the loo,

-closed the door, locked the door, sat...
-Someone opened it?

No, sat on the toilet

-and the room just went black!
-[judges laugh]

Oh, it fell off.

Should have put putty on quicker.

I'm worried that she doesn't know
how to utilize the glue.

She's putting it on wet and this glue,

you need to let it get tacky
before you stick anything on it.

Oh, nasty.

-[Stacey] Ophelia.
-Hi.

[Stacey] Can I touch it, do you mind?

This looks incredible.
How is this working for you?

You love it. Have you ever had
anything like this before?

We need, like, code signals.

So, if you're not feeling well,
or you feel sick, or you feel anything,

-just go like that.
-Mm-hmm.

Or, if you need the loo...

-just...
-[indistinct mumbling]

Yeah, just do that so we know.

MUAs, you've had an hour. One hour.

Oh, Jesus.

[drum beat quickens]

[sighs]

By this stage,
the MUAs should have moved on

from applying their prosthetics
to painting them.

Shall I add any more?
I feel like I should,

'cause it's missing something,
you know?

So far, so good.

[Stacey] Despite starting
15 minutes behind,

Berny is flying through the paintwork

of his sinister peacock look.

Berny, currently, is the one

that's kind of where
you would expect him to be.

[Megan] Eve...

I think she's having problems
with that piece.

It's probably because it's latex.

It's more rigid.

It hasn't been made
to go round an edge.

By now, I'd expect her
to have started colouring.

[Ophelia] Still need
to paint the maggots as well.

Oh, my God. Just turn to the left for me.

Turn to the right.

Oh, it's like custard.

Oh my God, that is well rank.
I'm so sorry.

[Hannah] The pus fell off. Gross.

MUAs, you have 30 minutes remaining.

[rapid percussive beat]

[Stacey] Unlike the other MUAs,
Hannah's decided to base her look

on not just one, but two fears.

[Hannah] I'm afraid of wasps.
When I see little tiny holes,

my brain automatically thinks
little wasps are going to be in there.

-[judges] Oh!
-[Megan] That looks interesting!

[Val] That gives me goosebumps.

[Dominic] Do I wanna run away
or do I wanna...

[popping]

-Gross.
-Squeeze it?

Once I get the colouring down,
it's all details

to finish the look off for me.

[Dominic] I think he's used the wrong red.

He's used a red that's too clean.

[Eve] I'm still getting the prosthetics
to stick to the face

but I've just started to do
a little bit of quick colour work.

Because she never put a base
across the face,

made the skin pale,
and then she could have added

all these colours and it would have looked
slightly more horrifying.

[Megan] It looks a little bit Disney.

Shit! I haven't dissolved that yet!
[Eve groans]

I'll just finish this side,
I need to finish this...

Talk to me, how's it going?

-I'm not happy with this at all, no.
-You're not?

No. Prosthetics is not for me.

Do you know what?

-We need to park Negative Nancy.
-Yeah.

Drop her off at the bottom
of the car park.

[laughs]

MUAs, you've got ten minutes left.

Last ten minutes.

[fast tempo electronic music]

[Ophelia muttering]

[screams] Sorry!

[chuckles nervously] I'm so sorry.

You're gonna hate me 'cause I'm gonna make
all your hair wet. [laughs]

-She's pulled it back with that.
-[Dominic] She has.

She's moved away from her glitz
and glam side. Are you kidding?

Face the mirror for me?

That's much better.

Oh no, drippy chin.

[Val] He put the gloss on too soon.

Take the gloss off the chin.

Two minutes left.

[James screams]

[Ophelia] Where's the fake blood?

I'm happy.

It's all about attention to detail
in these last few seconds.

Do you like it?

Sorry.

I want you to look up for me.

Time is up.

Stop what you're doing please.
Brushes down, sponges down.

I want to do so much more.

Please may you take your models next door
to be photographed.

Let's go.

[bright electronic music playing]

Hannah. Would you like to come forward?

When I was a kid, I had a wasp's nest
in my wall

and I very vividly remember the feeling
of them being there

and the sound at nighttime,
that kind of like...

I wanted to create something

that showed the disgust I feel

and I hope that it disgusts you.
[laughs]

Well, it does disgust me.

What's most exciting about this
is you made something

and you stuck it on a face
and I think it is amazing.

-Thank you.
-I love the gooey-ness

and stickiness. It is quite creepy.
It really is.

The way that you made that prosthetic work

and fit the face, it's so seamless.

And it was amazing.

And then you put the plastic bees on.

-They're too big. They're too cartoon.
-Thank you.

It's good.

James.

[James] When I was a toddler,
I got tackled by a goat.

It is my first memory of trauma

and I was getting these crazy nightmares

and I was envisioning this guy.

I love how you've used
loads of different mediums in your makeup.

The mouthpiece you've applied

really beautifully with the edges.

-It's a really good job, well done.
-Thank you.

[Val] Is it horrific? No.

It's too pretty.

There is a symmetry issue...

and I could see it.

As soon as you placed the second horn,
you weren't looking.

It is those attention to details

that is really gonna start
setting people apart

because the talent level is really high.

Thank you very much.

Berny.

I'll be totally honest with you,
I'm not happy with this look.

-[Dominic] You're not?
-No.

I knew that prosthetics
would be tricky for me.

Okay. Weirdly, I'm not offended
by your prosthetic.

I think you've done a really good job.

-Oh, okay.
-[Dominic] So, don't highlight

what you think you've done wrong

because the other people in the room
might not notice.

But, your symmetry is way out.

One side, you travel up from the under eye

and it goes up.
Whereas, the other side,

it kind of goes straight out
and then goes up

and that's where my issue is.

[Val] Thank you.

Ophelia, please come forward.

[Ophelia] It's about parasites.

It's almost like my emotions built up

and it eats me out from the inside.

[Megan] Yesterday, I said that you needed
to work on the colour.

Today, you've really taken that on board.
You've used six prosthetics

and they're all seamless.

Good golly!

Ding dong!

Oh my goodness!

[Ophelia screams]

This works
because it's so bloody believable.

It is beyond.

For me, this feels like the work

of a sci-fi specialist.

We've got beautiful veining.

These sort of like pustules
that are sort of like bursting.

It is brilliant!

-Thank you so much!
-[Val] Marvelous!

Thank you.

-Thank you so much.
-[Dominic] Well done.

Well done.

Eve, if you'd like to come up?

[Eve] I covered the mouth to represent
not being able to scream for help.

When I look at this,
I feel like I just wanna...

I wanna breathe
and it really conveys that idea of panic.

I wish there was something
a little bit more to it.

At the top, it would have just...

kind of pulled the whole thing together.

I don't care that there's nothing
happening up round the eyes.

I like the way the eyes
look like they're sunken.

I love the fact that it feels like
she's been dead a long time.

I love it. Thank you.

Thank you. Thanks. [laughs]

Well done.

-I'm shaking.
-[James exhales]

The work that we're seeing is unbelievable

but you've gotten this far,

so you've just gotta keep it up.

Keep it up 'cause only one of you can win.

Thank you, MUAs.

[Stacey] The judges must now decide
which two MUAs

will go into the Face Off elimination.

So, we have Eve.

I know she had a problem
laying down her prosthetics

but I think she did a pretty good job.

-[Val] Hannah.
-[Dominic] I really like this.

You really get the impression
that it's quite horrifying.

It's not horrifying.

-That's horrifying!
-[Val] It's not eerie.

It would be more horrifying
without the plastic toys.

James.

It is romantic.

It is not a nightmare.

What do we think of Berny's work?

I think he used the excuse of
"I don't do prosthetics"

to not do a good job.

Inside that makeup artist

is a very, very clever mind.
He just needs to let it out.

-Does it fit the brief? No.
-[Dominic scoffs]

I think we're all agreed on our first MUA
going into the Face Off

but the second one,

it's a very close call.

Oh my God.

[sighs]

[tense piano music playing]

OK gang. Thank you so much
for your patience.

Berny, Hannah,
you started this morning off

in our Face Off chairs.

The question is, have you done enough
to convince the judges

that you don't deserve to be sent

into the Face Off elimination?

Berny.

Your look wasn't terrifying.

It actually didn't fit the brief.

So, I'm afraid you are in the Face Off.

Hannah...

You struggled with your colour work

but yet you impressed us
with your homemade prosthetic

and also your blending of edges.

So you've beat the seat.

[sighs] Thank you.

So you know what that means.
We need to find someone

to replace Hannah in the Face Off.

This person's look
simply wasn't horrific enough.

They had poorly placed prosthetics

that were badly blended.

So James, you'll be the second MUA
in the Face Off elimination.

Judges, thank you so much,
we'll be in shortly.

-[Berny sighs]
-You alright?

Berny, James, please say your goodbyes.
One of you won't be coming back.

[overlapping murmuring and laughing]

[Eve] This group's getting so small.
We can all hug.

[Berny] I know how it all goes.

You've just gotta keep your eyes
on the prize

from the second you walk
in front of that chair.

-Alright boys. You okay?
-Yeah.

I'm not ready to go home.
I want to be in this competition.

[Stacey] To create a level playing field,

the MUAs will Face Off
over a pair of identical twins.

Okay. Thank you.

So guys, TV and film makeup

is all about replication,
to ensure continuity.

What we want to see is a complete copy
of the opposite eye.

The colour must be identical

and the rhinestones need to be

the right sizes in the right places.

[Val] Our MUAs will need
to create the shape,

then map out where to put the rhinestones.

You can either use tweezers,

or you can use Blu Tack.

It should be mirror image.

[Stacey] Boys, good luck.

You have 15 minutes

and your time starts now.

[fast tempo electronic music playing]

Just close your eyes for me.
Look forward.

Just close your eyes for me.

[Dominic] Berny's gone in
with a bigger brush,

whereas James has gone in
with a small brush and just edging away.

That's 5 minutes gone.
You've got 10 minutes left.

What's interesting now is that James
is going in with the Blu Tack,

whereas Berny's going in with tweezers.

-I find...
-With that hand.

[Dominic] Oh, my God,
I find tweezers difficult

because you just need a little shake,
which Berny has,

and those rhinestones are gonna ping off
all over the place.

[Stacey] Two minutes left.

Five... four... three... two... one.

Your time is up.

Dom, I think we need a conflab.

Okay.

[Dominic] It is so fine between the two...

but one is just better than the other.

[Val] It was tight and tense

till we got to the final minute

and then...

I knew that...

One...

...was the winner.

[dramatic music playing]

James, even though the colour

was identical to the other eye,

the shape was just too thin.

Berny, it all comes down
to one missing rhinestone

you failed to place on the inner corner

of the left eye.

We've made a decision.

Berny, please pack up your kit,
you'll be going home.

[James sighs]

[melancholy piano music playing]

Judges, thank you so, so much.

-I'm so sorry.
-Don't worry. It's okay.

James, congratulations.

[choking up] Thank you so much.

[clears throat] Thank you.

Berny, commiserations,
I'm so gutted for you.

Thanks.

[Berny] This week
definitely wasn't my week

but this isn't the last
anyone's seen of me.

I have a dream
to take this industry by storm

and that's what's gonna happen.

[Val] Sweetheart. I'm so sorry.

It's okay.

[Val] You're an amazing artist,
this is just...

The world's not ready for you
on this stage

but it's ready for you on another stage.

-[MUAs] Hi!
-[Stacy laughing]

[James] I'm feeling so relieved.

That was my first time in the Face Off.
Let it be the last time.

I am pursuing this competition.
I wanna go all the way.

[James] I can't feel...

I actually... my heart is pumping so fast.

[Stacey] James, Ophelia, Eve, Hannah...

you're our final four! Well done!

-[James] Oh God.
-[laughter]

[end theme music playing]
