Glow Up: Britain's Next Make-Up Star (2019–…): Season 2, Episode 4 - Fashion Editorial - full transcript

The 6 MUAs are thrown into the glossy world of fashion editorials - booked on a job for gay magazine, Attitude. Michelle Visage gives them a Creative Brief inspired by club culture. The Face-Off blends 3 colours to create a temple...

[upbeat electronic music playing]

This week we are at Spring Studios.
It's the home of Glow Up,

and also a world-renowned
photography studio.

Later today we have
a very special magazine shoot setup

where our very own MUAs
will delve into the glossy world

of fashion editorials.

[Stacey] If the MUAs perform well
in today's brief,

they could earn the chance

to land their work in print
for the very first time.

-[MUAs] Morning
-Good morning.

Okay, so, I have a sneaking suspicion

that some of you are probably already
very familiar

with our amazing guest judge.

Please welcome Andrew Gallimore.

[applause]

[Stacey] As well as having celebrity
clients like Dua Lipa and Taylor Swift,

leading makeup artist Andrew Gallimore
is renowned for his innovative approach.

My makeup style is set apart slightly
because I use a lot of materials

that are not strictly cosmetic,
so it's beauty with a twist.

I'm from a fine art background,

so I will always reach for
the craft table,

and whatever does the job best.

Today you're gonna be working for me
on a fashion editorial

for Attitude Magazine.

Oh my God.

The piece is all about latest trends
for Spring/Summer 2020.

You'll each be assigned
a different fashion trend

that your makeup needs to work with.

This isn't time to play it safe.
The magazine wants a bold look.

So, really go for it.
This is a high fashion editorial piece.

Your models need to be ready
in 1 hour 45 minutes.

The look that impresses us the most
will be used as the lead image

for the editorial.

And if anyone really knocks our socks off,

they might even make the digital cover.

But, if your makeup look
isn't good enough,

Andrew and the magazine
will not include it.

Okay gang, think "ding dong."

[laughter]

Good luck. Off you go.

[James] I am feeling excited
about this one.

Attitude Magazine is a huge magazine
to work for.

I have just got to make sure
I impress Andrew.

[Stacey] Attitude is the UK's best-selling
gay magazine.

Its catalog of celebrity cover stars

ranges from Taron Egerton
to Edward Enninful, RuPaul, Cher

and even the Duke of Cambridge.

Fashion has been central
to Attitude Magazine

since its very first issue.

And what we're looking for today
is the bold, daring high-fashion makeup,

something you wouldn't expect to see
on a male model.

Oh! Animal print?
I've literally got trousers like that.

[Stacey] Each MUA has been assigned
a model and a trend.

[James] Right, floral.

Double denim. I love double denim.

I always wear double denim myself,
so it's an exciting one for sure.

[Eve] What is that?

[Stacey] To achieve the bold look
the magazine has asked for...

Powder paint! Cool.

...the MUAs have been provided with
a range of unusual materials.

-[Ophelia] Zips, crepe paper.
-[James] Ping-pong balls.

My trend is metallic and I'm gonna create
this kind of porcelain skin,

so that it's flawless,
so that when the light hits it,

it almost looks metallic within itself,

but I don't want it to be too loud.

Fashion editorial is less.

It's not "Shove a load of stuff
on the face."

[Andrew] Attitude Magazine has asked
for a bold look.

This isn't a lip balm and concealer shoot.

This is where they have the opportunity
to really go to town,

so that's what we need
the MUAs to do today.

[Stacey] Eve's trend is animal print.

[Eve] I'm just doing something based
around a snake.

James, talk to me about your plans
for this floral look.

I'm playing with the materials we've got.
I have string, I've got ping-pong balls.

I've made my own... It's called split cake,
when you combine water paints together.

So when I stroke that down with a brush,
and when I place it on,

it'll make a really cool gradient
that will pop off the dress.

I'm gonna go adventurous.

Kind of like a shape that goes
from the chin.

Kind of like that.
I just wanna have a little play.

I've got some denim,
'cause we have double denim going on.

I just wanna really impress the judges.

I'm not here to mess around with this one.

[Stacey] Also using denim
for her tie-dye trend, is Ophelia.

[Ophelia] I love denim myself.

I study fashion. Used to.

I graduated
and literally my whole graduate collection

was just denim.
And to be able to use fabric again,

it's just like
it's fashion all over again, you know?

Always passionate about the arts,

Ophelia moved to the UK from Hong Kong
when she was 15.

I'm the black sheep of the family.

My parents don't like the idea of makeup.

They think that it's for performers
and burlesque dancers.

They never saw it as an art form.

But I stuck with it, you know?

I'm like "I don't care.
This is who I wanna be."

So, entering this competition, hopefully,
will prove to my parents

that I can be a professional makeup artist

and that they were wrong.

Do you know what?
I might actually keep the skin quite plain

and place denim almost like patchwork.

So, something like that.
Will it be a good look? I don't know.

Your eyelashes are so long.

[Stacey] Office worker, Hannah,
has been given stripes.

I would love to do this for a living
because in my normal job

I have zero creative output whatsoever.

It's literally just me running reports

and this feels like
I can actually experiment

and create something.

So I want it to be quite bold

and messy because I want it to contrast
with how smart and silky that is.

I kind of hate it.

[sucks her teeth]
I don't know. Do I have enough time?

MUAs, that's half an hour gone.

You've got an hour and 15 left.

[Hannah] No, I don't like it.

I don't like it.
It doesn't go with the clothes at all.

Hannah seems quite flustered.

She's wiped all of her work off.

Yeah, I'd love to know why

'cause I liked what she was doing
and was going with it.

Go like that.

So I hope stage two is even better.

[fast tempo electronic music]

[James] Now we whack this on.

I'm not solely using just makeup.

It's more like sticking bits of fabric
on the skin and layer it a little bit.

I love what Berny's doing. It's almost
like he's taken the outfit onto the face.

Little jigsaw, isn't it?
Like a denim puzzle.

[Andrew] Yeah, it is.

[Stacey] For new graduate, Berny,
today's brief is a welcome chance

to showcase his creative side.

[Berny] School was very weird for me.
I was very shy, I wouldn't really talk.

I'd raid my sister's makeup box,
without her knowing. [laughs]

Before I started posting looks
on Instagram, I was very scared

of being exposed to the public as a boy
wearing makeup

'cause I thought there'd be so much
lack of acceptance and stuff.

But now, I'm very confident.

Makeup definitely allowed me
to not care what anyone thinks.

Brandon, talk me through your brief.

My trend is metallic so I'm trying
to get that, kind of, greenish metallic

that's in the tracksuit itself.

Andrew has encouraged you guys

-to really go for it.
-Yeah.

This look appears quite pared back.

It's a risk,
but I'm willing to take that risk.

[Berny] I'm not getting it perfect.
My hands are starting to shake

so I need to really focus.

It's getting difficult.

[Eve] My look is animal print

and I've gone along
with an Adam and Eve theme

so I'm gonna make it look like a heart
and also a bit like an apple as well.

It's gone a little bit
school fete face painting.

Oh! Yeah, that's not particularly
Attitude. [laughs]

[Andrew] Not really.

I am crushing up mint humbugs
and seeing what happens when I mix

the flecks of it with gloss,
but I think I'm putting too much pressure

on myself to be really experimental
and I don't know what to do.

-Ophelia, how are you?
-Stressed out.

-Why?
-[Ophelia] The brief says tie-dye

-and right now I'm not seeing any tie-dye.
-I've never seen you flustered, Ophelia.

-[Ophelia] Yay!
-[Stacey laughs]

-[Ophelia] Lord Jesus.
-Can you put your hand

and hold that for a moment?

MUAs, you've had over an hour.
You've got less than 45 minutes.

It's a bit shit, that.

[Berny] Close your eyes.

Does that look like denim jeans?
[screams]

-[Brandon] I'm saying sorry now.
-[laughs]

-[Brandon] Is that hurting?
-[Model] No.

-You okay?
-It's kinda sticky.

Sticky? That's alright.

Sorry. [laughs]

I'm just getting attacked by string!

[mumbling]

These balls are like
the center bud of the flower.

[Stacey] James has just started to stick

ping-pong balls on his model's shoulder.

[Andrew] I'm trusting in his vision

and hopefully it will all come together
at the end.

Not much time left.

At the moment,
I'm thinking where to put the colours.

There is no tie-dye on the face
but there is a lot of denim.

Mm-hmm. She may get some
of the tie-dye colour in there afterwards.

MUAs, you've got 30 minutes left.

[Ophelia screams] Ain't got no time.

I can't talk right now, I need to focus.

Oh no, the bottom of the chin's
now not sticking.

[gasps] What am I doing? I don't know.

It wasn't looking too pretty,
so I've just picked up some string...

I'm literally making this up
as I go. [Eve laughs]

[Berny] Feels a bit weird, I'm sorry.

MUAs, last five minutes.

Okay that's not wanting to stick.

One of these just fell off.

[Ophelia mumbling]

Two minutes till we need your models.

Stay. Whilst stressing out.

[Ophelia gasping]

Oh! Better stick that.

MUAs, time is up.

Please put down all your materials.
Everything down.

Models, will you please go next door
to get photographed.

[Stacey] The winning MUA will land
the coveted lead image,

but anyone who falls short
could be cut entirely.

Attitude editor, Cliff Joannou, is on hand
to assess the looks.

[Andrew] This is Berny
and he had double denim.

He's worked well with the model's features
which is what I like about this.

The shapes, the lines,
it works with his outfit.

I love the studs, he's used a reference

to how people stud denim
which I thought was great.

[Andrew] This one's Ophelia
and she had tie-dye.

I'm gobsmacked.

Wrong brief.
It looks like the denim trend.

What she hasn't brought into it
is the tie-dye

which is the big sign on the rail,
on the clothes behind her.

[Andrew] This is by Brandon
and he did metallics.

There is nothing in here
that screams to me, "metallics"

other than some gold paint.

You could probably tidy it up.
I think you could neaten up the eye

and I'd rip off those ropes.

So here's Hannah's.
We've got a lot of stripes going on:

Painted stripes, tape stripes,
the stripes of the gloss

coming down the neck,
which I think is interesting.

I like the wet lip,
I like the dripping on the chest.

He looks hot and sexy in that image.

It's like he's been snogging!

[Andrew] This is Eve's.
She had animal prints.

I like that she'd used the snake
rather than snakeskin,

but I don't know if it's been executed
a hundred percent.

[Val] You know, it was a bit "kids craft."

[Andrew] This one is James
and he's done florals.

I love his technique, how he put
two aqua colours together

and made this duo chrome paint.

I love that he's used 3D elements.

I love that he's been bold enough to be

the one person that picked up
the ping-pong balls.

It's almost like something from Avatar.
Like it's a fantasy.

That photo, as a picture, is hot.

-I mean look at that...
-[Cliff] That's beautiful.

[Val] That is a painting on a wall.

So, thank you guys for all your hard work
and creativity today.

Andrew and the magazine have gotten
some great editorial images.

However, not all the looks
are going to be used.

[Andrew] There were some
great makeups today.

Two in particular stood out to me.

And those were...

double denim...

and florals.

[gasps, laughing]

But the lead image,
and digital cover for the magazine...

is...

Ping-pong, it's you, James and florals.

[applause]

[James] Oh, my God.

"Ping-pong," that's all I'm gonna say!
[laughs]

It feels like such a breath of fresh air,

I am so relieved and obviously I'm buzzed.
I'm so buzzed.

That needed to happen. Yeah.

[dramatic music building]

As the hopefuls arrive at Glow Up HQ,
it's time for the judges to decide

which two MUAs will start the day

in the dreaded Face Off chairs.

[Dominic] First up, we have Ophelia.

She was given tie-dye.

It tie-"died."

-[laughing]
-"It tie-died." I love it! Ding dong!

[Dominic] Eve.

I think an eight year old
could do what's on the face...

Don't you dare say things like that.

That annoys me when people say that.

-I don't care!
-An 8 year old couldn't do that.

Whatever.
We're not agreed so let's move on.

Next we have Brandon. He did metallics.

The stylist obviously doesn't like it,
covering it up with clothing.

You then have to question,
"Am I good enough?'"

[Stacey] Okay, let's go.

Make a move. Good luck everyone.

[Stacey] So you know the score.
Nice and quick, find your chair.

[tense electronic music playing]

[Ophelia] Is it me? Oh!

[Stacey] There is still one way to escape
the Face Off:

knock the judges' socks off
in today's brief

and hope another MUA underperforms.

Ophelia, Brandon, you find yourselves
in our Face Off chairs.

Ophelia, there just wasn't enough tie-dye

and that made it not relevant
to the outfit.

Sadly that means your shot
isn't gonna be in the magazine.

Brandon, the body makeup aspect
of your look just wasn't bold enough,

and as a whole, it didn't strike gold.

Your shot is gonna go in the magazine
but it's gonna be saved

by the fact the outfit is gonna hide
the body makeup.

Now, for generations, club culture
has been used by men

to express themselves through makeup.

Today we want you to produce a look

on a male model
inspired by a club culture.

So, you can take your inspiration
from any culture. It might be rave, disco,

garage, hip-hop.

But, your look must channel

the aesthetic style and tone
that your chosen culture embodies.

MUAs, that's not all.

Today we have decided to invite along
an extra guest judge.

This judge knows a thing or two
about club culture.

MUAs, please welcome Michelle Visage.

-[shocked screaming]
-[laughter]

Oh, no!

Hey, everybody! Hi!

[Stacey] Best known as a judge
on hit reality show RuPaul's Drag Race,

Michelle Visage is renowned
for her brutal honesty.

I have seen so much in my years of drag
and on Drag Race,

growing up in New York City
in the drag and club scene.

I absolutely do not wanna see something
that we've seen time and time again.

I'm hoping these kids bring tenacity
and passion

and creativity to the challenge today.

[laughter]

I grew up in New York City
in the '80s club scene,

and I know how important the club scene is
as a safe haven for self-expression.

But, today, I'm looking for exciting.

I'm looking for fashionable.

I want it all, and keep in mind...

there's probably nothing
I haven't seen already.

So, surprise me.

No presh.

[laughter]

Bring in the models!

[heavy bass line playing[

[Stacey] Unlike yesterday,

the MUAs have been allowed to prepare
for today's creative brief.

Okay. You're gonna have two
and a half hours to complete your look.

Ophelia, Brandon, you have 15 minutes less
than all the other MUAs.

[Dominic] We'll let you know
when you can begin.

Best of luck, your time starts now.

I'm going to put that on your head.

I'll pop a gown over you, alright?

I'm filling my tray with every glitter
I can get my hands on. [laughs]

Oh, my God, Michelle Visage
is in the building.

I can't believe it. I was like... [screams]

This is actually happening today.

The pressure is on.

How many pairs of glasses do you have?

In the range of about 700.

[gasps] Oh my God. Wow.

Is it obvious I'm fan-girling
a little bit? No. [laughs]

And, my look is a modern day Club Kid.

Club Kid culture originated in New York
kinda late '80s, early '90s,

and it's really gender fluid.

So, my model has got
the perfect masculine stamp.

I want to give my model a transformation.

Close your eyes for me.

You're gonna look
a little bit like Voldemort.

[Val] She is putting on a bald cap.

-It's not an easy thing to do seamlessly.
-[judges] No.

I'm basically doing a sweaty Berlin raver

that's just been dancing all night long.

[Hannah] My look today is inspired by
the Cybergoth club scene.

It's like goth but neon.

I am creating
the kind of breathing apparatus thing

I want to put on to my model's face.

I'm not trained.
When I'm at home doing it myself,

I just make prosthetics
out of papier-mâché and sponges.

Oh!

She is very capable when it comes
to prosthetics, molding, things like that.

Good, 'cause right now it looks like
a tube stuck on with chewing gum.

[Dominic] It's early days!

Ophelia, Brandon, you're welcome to start.

[fast tempo electronic music playing]

-How you feeling?
-[Brandon] I'm trying not to stress.

Is this what we hope to achieve?

Yes, I've decided to go
with '90s acid house,

so I wanna go quite trance-y,
quite acid trip.

It's because Andrew said my look yesterday
didn't stand out enough,

so, I think I'm going as bold as possible.

Just lift your chin up for me.
Thank you, love.

This look is a mixture of goth, glamour
and gore.

Monster Queen is a night in London.
Like, drag queens and a bunch of goths.

I hope my look will be enough
to get myself off the Face Off chairs.

Where's the spray?
I just had it in my hand.

I was saying that I'm fed up of doing
the nights-out makeup, and then,

throughout this competition being like:
"No, give me a night-out makeup any day."

I think Eve spends too much time chatting.

She's gonna run the risk
of running out of time.

I did try and superglue
my eyelashes on once.

Hello, girl. Talk me through your concept:
Studio 54, sort of disco vibes.

There's something so glamorous about it.
Something so glittery and sparkly.

[Val] This is looking interesting,
what Berny's doing.

I like the look of this.

I just wanna do something that...

I love.

And that I think the judges will love.

[James] Turn and look at me
a little bit, please.

He's reshaping his face.

He's going like the clappers...
[singing "Flight of the Bumble Bee"]

I've put darker colours over his jawline
to make it more androgynous,

slim-lining his face shape,
and then contouring

is just helping to bring out
some of the cheekbone area

so I want it just to be
a bit more feminine.

-Hey, Hannah!
-Hi, Michelle.

-How are you, love?
-I'm really well.

Tell me about this prosthesis moment
you've got going on.

Yeah, my look is inspired by Cybergoth.

Kinda dystopian futures
and cyborg android vibes as well.

So, gonna concentrate on this bit

'cause I think
that'll take me the longest.

Good luck to you. Take care.

Oh my god. Chatting to Michelle Visage.

I've gone really goofy and sweaty.
I kind of have a crush on her.

They keep asking me, "What's the meaning
behind your look?" and today I'm like,

"I just bloody like it."

This is not the salon,
this is a competition.

[Brandon] It's weird someone else
being so close to your eye.

Yeah, it tickles. [laughs]

Boom shackalacka.

So, you're behind 15 minutes.

Yes. So, I am focusing on
a lot of graphic stuff

so I need to be super technical.

Is that something you excel at?

Definitely, I think to beat myself
out of this chair

I do need to just pull out
all of the things that I can do...

-[Michelle] Uh-huh.
-and do it good.

[Eve] I'm starving, you know.

MUAs, you've had one hour.
You've got one and a half hours left.

[James whining]

My model has strong brows.

I'm literally up here as if I have

Val's magnifying glass, just checking sure
that those brows are set down.

[music intensifies]

So, Ophelia's coming in now
with her expert line work and the netting.

She's doing a fishnet kind of face.

So, I'm mixing a darker shade of red.

So, literally, I'm going to go
over the lines again.

To paint netting on a face

you need to know
where it's going to become closer

and gathered and where it's gonna stretch
and wrap around things.

Because it's so easy to go off symmetry
with this.

She is nailing it!

Stay very still.

-[Michelle] Berny!
-Hello!

I wanna know what is going on here

'cause I've been watching,
and I haven't been able to pinpoint it.

So, I'm very interested in, like,
the intense techno Berlin scenes.

There's a sense of companionship
and togetherness with it,

and I wanted to try and just embody that
in a look.

Someone who's in the depths of a club
with lights beaming,

just absolutely beaming on his face.

We're really going for
the light aspect of this?

Exactly.
His mascara is just going everywhere.

He's just sweating
and dancing the night away, basically.

-Well carry on. Can't wait to see it.
-Thank you.

So, back.

Now, this one's gonna be
a little bit trickier, which is fun.

We've spent a lot of time
on this bald cap, Eve.

Yes, I just want mine to be
over-the-top sparkle, glitz, glamour.

This is gonna be covered in glitter,
so this is a base coat.

I notice you're a bit of a chatter.

-[laughs]
-Yeah?

Yeah. I work in a salon, so you're always
just blabbering away.

-That's how we make our money in salons.
-Yeah, definitely.

But I'm gonna say keep it moving
'cause time is ticking.

MUAs, you have one hour left.

[dramatic vocalized music playing]

[Eve] Get this glitter on.

It just looks so sick.

My concerns are Brandon, Eve,

and I think we're running out of time
for Hannah.

I'm, like, "No!"

Brandon is taking us to the Serengeti,

we are in National Geographic.

It's not the best.

I don't know why,
I don't know what I'm missing.

-Darling, it's Attenborough on acid.
-[Michelle] Yeah.

I'm not liking it. [Brandon groans]

[Michelle] What's going on here?

I moved to London about a year ago now
and I have discovered

-some of the Club Kid scene.
-[Michelle] Okay.

So, I got a real masculine guy,
so I'm gonna turn him into an angel.

Looking deadly.

Looking good, feeling fierce,
looking gorgeous.

[laughs]

[gasps] I can't breathe
when I'm doing the steady bits.

MUAs, half an hour left.

You've got half hour left.

[ticking drum beat]

[Ophelia] Okay.

I'm struggling this week

and I can't, like, vision
how I want it to look.

I'm just whacking this fake blood on.
You likin' it? [laughs]

I feel like the left one
is slipping on the nose.

Oh, no. Okay.

Ugh, having a bit of a technical issue

because this side's starting to fall off.
It's just not having it. Oh, no.

If you could hold it, just on the tube.

Literally, just like hold the tube there,
yeah. Okay. [sighs]

I thought it was blended
and then as soon as

I put the foundation on to cover it
I'm like, "No, it wasn't blended."

You can see the line there
and I don't think I'm gonna be able

to make it better.

I only think
I'm gonna be able to make it worse.

The sweat looks amazing, Bern.
How have you done this?

I used liquid glycerine and what it does,

it separates and turns into droplets.

[Stacey] That is so clever.

I just wanna wipe your nose.

-You know, like your mum does.
-[Berny laughs]

Bonkers and beautiful.

Right, the glue is not working
to stick it back on

so I'm gonna have to try

and mold the putty to the face.
Just the blending is not that cute.

MUAs, you have five minutes.

Is it even? I don't know.

I think so, I hope so.

With situations like this,
I would just start again but here we are.

I've got nothing up my sleeve.

Empty.

[ethereal vocalisations playing]

MUAs, you have two minutes left.

I don't really like it.

-[Hannah] I like it as it is.
-[model] Yeah.

I don't feel like it really helps.

-Look at your eyes. It's like...
-[laughs]

I wish I'd had more time.

[scoffs]

MUAs, your time is up.

Brushes down.

Please take your models next door
to be photographed.

[uptempo electronic music playing]

[Val] Ophelia, please step forward.

[Ophelia] Monster Queen
is drag performers, goths and horror.

This is the look
that I would wear on myself.

This is someone who's got caught
in a wire fence

and you've added little flashes of white
in different areas that make it look real

and wet and sweaty.

-I kind of wanna stick my finger in it.
-[laughs]

I think you ticked the boxes
of what your club culture was all about.

It says horror, it says glamour,
it says drag.

I really liked that.

Thank you so much. [laughs]

[Dominic] James.

[James] My club culture is Club Kid.
I've always looked up to artistries

like Kabuki, Starshine,
Ern Glam, Julie Jules.

I would see this as a Club Kid
hosting a fashion event after-party.

[Andrew] I'm really impressed
with the base colour

and the blend between that pink
and the purple and the white.

It's so beautifully done. It's incredible.

Thank you.

This is an absolute work of art.

Oh, Michelle.

-Your reference points are all my friends.
-[laughter]

The intricacies of your feather strokes...
I love that attention to detail.

That says a lot about you as an artist.

I absolutely adore it.

I see this as, you know, a painting,
a modern Picasso.

-It is amazing.
-[applause]

-Thank you.
-Thank you so much. Thank you.

Brandon.

[Brandon] I decided
to go with '90s acid rave.

A mask of like an acid trip,
slipping off my model's face.

[Michelle] With black and white
there's no margin for error,

because what happens: you get a grey zone.

I did love the whispers of neon

that you put through the stripes
up at the top.

It looks great, it looks fun.
But what I'm getting is...

kids' face painting.

[Val] You were off technically.
Your precision wasn't there.

You didn't convey your club culture.
For me, it just doesn't work.

It's not carni-val.

It's carni-dull.

Thank you guys.

Eve, will you please step forward.

[Eve] Mine was inspired by Studio 54,
disco glamour, but I wanted it

to look like the end of the night
rather than the beginning of the night.

I'm no expert at bald caps.

I believe you're not an expert either,
right?

No, really not.

It's too far forward.
That edge should've been blended off.

-[Eve] I made it worse...
-[Andrew] But the rest of it...

I kind of got cabaret vibes from it

rather than Studio 54.

-I think the disco ball balaclava works.
-[Eve laughs]

You know, I like the fact
that it's a simple showstopper.

I've seen this time and time again.

So it's nothing new.

I'm not getting '70s from this at all.

[Eve] Yeah.

But it's hot. And I would totally...

have sex with him in a bathroom.

[laughter]

Thank you.

[Michelle] Hannah,
will you please come forward?

[Hannah] Cybergoth is a mixture
of goth and raver,

so there's lots of neon in there,

tubing and plastic synthetic textures,
like a next level human.

I saw you struggling for quite some time
with those prosthetics.

You should've yanked them off,
because it looks like

chewed-up bubble gum on a face
with some straws stuck in.

I feel like you could've maybe used tubes
with more of a curve to them

that would've made more of a connection
with those points in the face.

So there's less need
for that amount of putty.

But, good for you for giving it a go.

I loved your concept,
but you just didn't pull it off today.

-Thank you.
-[Andrew] Thanks.

Berny, will you please step forward.

[Berny] I was very much inspired
by the Berlin rave scene.

I love the concept behind it,
being in the club,

the lights hitting someone's face,
and that's what you've recreated.

I got chills.
I was literally like boink, boink, boink.

Thank you so much.

Berny, darling, this is phenomenal.

And it does look like he's been dancing
all night.

You gave us the sweat
and you did that with...

[both] Glycerine.

Liquid glycerine.

-And that to me is the icing on the cake.
-[Berny laughs]

-[Michelle] Well done kiddo.
-Thank you, so much.

[Val] This is incredible.

And this really moves me

because it's more than makeup,
it's an experience.

I was watching you work
and you had two brushes,

and it was just all happening.

You knew exactly what you were doing
from the very beginning.

[clapping] This is
one of your proudest moments.

You should be so happy!

Ding dong!

-[applause]
-[Val] Amazing!

Thank you so much. I'm, like, very happy.

I'm gonna let you know that
the fire is here and I'm not forgettable

and that I'm gonna do my best
to keep this standard up.

-Good. Keep it up.
-[Val] Marvelous.

[applause]

[Val] Guys, there's been
some incredible work today.

Please go next door whilst we decide
who is going to be in the Face Off.

[James] Thank you.

[Dominic] So let's start with Brandon.

He wasn't in the room.

His body was, but his brain was elsewhere.

I feel sorry for him
but you're only as good as your last look.

Shall we see who else is in jeopardy?

[Dominc] Eve.

It's like she concentrated so much
on this, that she forgot about the face.

[Andrew] Hannah's. I love the idea
behind it, it's just not done very well.

I don't even think we can call these
prosthetics.

[tense music playing]

[Val sighing]

-Hey!
-[MUAs] Hey.

Brandon...

Ophelia...

You started the day off
in our Face Off chairs.

The question is: have you done enough
to prove to the judges

that you should not be
in this evening's Face Off elimination?

Brandon, your look didn't read
as your club culture.

And also, your symmetry missed the mark.

So yet again, you find yourself
in the Face Off elimination.

Ophelia...

You did channel your club culture,

and you were technically strong,

so you have beat the seat.

[James] Well done.

Which means someone needs to take
Ophelia's place.

[music intensifies]

This person didn't deliver makeup
to a high enough standard.

So, Hannah...

you'll be the second MUA
in tonight's Face Off elimination.

[Stacey] Judges, thank you.
I'll bring them shortly.

[Val] Thank you.

Hannah, Brandon...

please say goodbye.
One of you won't be returning.

[Brandon sighing]

[Hannah] I don't wanna go home.
I've got this image of me

just going back to my office job

and staying there forever,
which is a really horrible thought.

So, if I wanna change my future,
I need to stay in this competition.

-Don't cry. Do not cry.
-I'm not crying!

[Brandon] I've been in the Face Off
once so I know what to expect.

I think that gives me an advantage
at this point.

Although I'm in this situation,
I'm gonna get myself out of it.

[James] You've done so well.

[dramatic music playing]

[Stacey] Judges, thank you.

One makeup look that has been prominent

in countless club scenes
through the decades,

is draping:
colour wrapped around the eye,

from the forehead to the cheek.

We will require a minimum
of three bold colours.

The colours should start high
in the temple and drape down to the cheek.

Both sides must be symmetrical
and must enhance the model's features.

Draping is the application of colour,

starting high up into the temple,
going around the eye

and falling on to the cheek.

We want the MUAs to use
at least 3 bright colours

that stand out
and compliment the model's skin tone.

It may seem simple,
but with large shapes,

any asymmetry and imbalance
will be obvious and unforgivable.

You have ten minutes.

And those ten minutes... start now.

[fast tempo electronic music playing]

Brandon is going blue, green...
What's gonna be his third colour?

-[Dominic] I know.
-[Val] Yellow could be difficult

to make it pop.

Five minutes left.

[Dominic] The thing Hannah's done
is she's taken

three really difficult colours to mix,
so she's challenged herself.

To mix the blue and purple together

is really difficult
to get a nice seamless blend.

[music intensifies]

Two minutes left. Two minutes.

One minute left.

Five...Four...Three...Two...

One.
Please may you stop what you're doing.

[brushes clatter]

[Stacey] Dom, Val, I'm certain
you'll want to have a closer look.

-[Val] I think we need a conflab.
-Mm.

[dramatic piano music playing]

[Dominic] This is really difficult
because on one side

we've got a nice smooth blend,

but maybe lacks impact.

On the other side
we've got three bold strong colours

that don't necessarily blend well together
but they are blended.

The brief was three colours.

On one side, although three colours
were used, only two are visible

because the yellow is blended
so into the green

that it just becomes the green
and the blue.

So, that doesn't work.

Our other model, you can definitely see
three colours, temple-draped.

It's not perfect.

[both] But it is bold.

[both] I think I know who I would choose.

You've reached a decision?

-Yeah, I think so.
-Yep.

[Val] Hannah.

You had a brave, bold colour choice.

But, by choosing two colours
that were at the opposite end

of the colour spectrum, you ran the risk
of your outside colours

going murky brown.

[tense repetitive beat playing]

Brandon.

You had really great technique,

and you picked three colours
that were very harmonious.

However, over blending

made us lose any definition
and we ended up only seeing two.

[dramatic beat building]

Brandon, you're going home.

Thanks.

-[Dom] Hannah, we'll see you next week.
-[gasps] Thank you so much.

[Brandon] Well done, you know?

Well done. You're gonna smash it.

You've got this, Han.
Don't doubt yourself. Alright?

[crying] Thank you so much.

Hannah, congratulations.

Brandon, I wish you so much luck
with everything you do going forward.

-It's just not meant to be.
-I know.

Sadly, my time here has come to an end,
but nevertheless, I walk away a happy man.

[Val] You were amazing.

[Brandon] This has been
a learning curve the whole way.

I can't believe some of the things
that I've done and experienced.

So, I'll just carry on
until I get to the top.

So, watch out for this one.

Hi, gang.

-[screaming]
-[James] Oh, my God!

I was just so relieved. I did it.

So, maybe I'm not so awful after all.

I think this does bring me one step closer
to my dream of never having to go back

into an office ever again
and actually do what I love.

I now stand here
looking at our five remaining MUAs.

You've made it halfway through.

Let's go. Well done, gang. Fab Five!

-[MUAs whooping]
-[Eve laughs]

[end theme music playing]
