Glow Up: Britain's Next Make-Up Star (2019–…): Season 1, Episode 2 - Movie Prosthetics - full transcript

It is movie week as the MUAs have to impress an Oscar-winning prosthetics artist at the home of Harry Potter, before creating their own fairytale characters at Glow Up HQ.

[Stacey] It's time to Glow Up.

On their first assignment, the MUAs had to
show us they knew everything about beauty.

And today, it's anything but that.

This week, we're in the film studio
and the world of special effects.

They need to come in today, the remaining
nine, and show us that they can cut it

in this world too.

-[Ellis] Oh, my God. Is it Harry Potter?
-[Steph] Oh, my God.

-[screams] Oh, yes!
-Oh, my God!

-I'm excited!

Oh, my God,
because, like, the goblins and shit.

[both] Ohhh!

Yes!

-Look at that...
-[Stacey] One of the largest

state-of-the-art
film facilities in the world,

Leavesden Studios has been home

to some of the most successful movies
of all time...

Oh, my God. Look at that.

...including everyone's favorite
boy wizard.

-Yeah, give or take...
-Ohh!

I'm super happy.
When we got here in the studios,

I was, like, overwhelmed,
almost started crying.

It's why I'm here.
I want to show my skills.

So I'm in a good place right now.

[Dominic] When you start out
in this industry,

you cannot be so specific
with what you want to do,

because no one's gonna book you
for the one thing you like to do.

You have to be good at everything.

I've used prosthetics on the
Lady Gaga Born This Way album cover

and also in the video.

It was a great way to showcase Gaga in a
way that she had never been seen before.

So, do I like prosthetics?

I love them.

[Stacey] As always, it's not just the
resident judges the MUAs need to impress.

Our special guest judge today really is
one of the absolute best in the business.

Allow me to introduce you.

Oscar- and BAFTA-winning special effects
makeup artist

David Malinowski.

While his name might not be familiar,

you'll probably recognize David's many
faces from films such as Harry Potter,

Fantastic Beasts and The Darkest Hour.

[woman] And the Oscar goes to...

[applause]

So, today you're going to be working for
me on what we call a character test day.

It's a chance for special effects
makeup artists

to experiment with characters
just to see how they look on screen.

And because special effects makeup
is all about collaboration,

this week, you'll be working in teams.

-[whispers] Wow.
-Wow.

Yeah. Called it.

I'm gonna give you a character brief
and some tools of my trade,

and I want you to bring
a pair of creatures to life.

Don't just think about the prosthetic,
think about the character as a whole.

So we're talking hair, hands, ears,
costume, all of that kind of thing.

[Stacey] Teaming up for today...

Nikki, Tiffany, and Paige.

Sometimes I can be really picky.
If I don't like it,

I'll get really frustrated,
especially if I'm doing, like, group work.

Team two... Leigh, Steph, and Brandon.

I actually work really well under stress
for some reason.

I don't know why, but being under pressure
gives me that motivation and fire

to achieve what I went in to achieve
in the beginning.

And finally, Belinda,

Mathieu,

and Ellis.

My weak spot
is the prosthetics challenge.

I just taught myself the basics
from YouTube,

so I can either apply prosthetics
seamlessly,

or it looks like a hot mess.

-I'm Ellis.
-Just as in the real world,

their job today
will be to interpret and bring to life

the director's brief.

-Love this!
-Wow.

Okay, so, here's our brief.

Bird professors,
at least 100 years or more old,

and hidden in the bogland.

Each team will be working
to a very different brief.

Pig warriors, young 20s/30s warriors
who lives in the woodland area.

[sighs] They've fought in many wars
and have brutal temperaments.-

I'm really excited.

Each look involves creating
a fantasy animal.

Cats royal family. Ooh.

Okay, so older, 60s, poised and regal,

they can come across as quite snooty.

To bring their creations to life,

each team will have two actors,

two sets of prosthetics,

two costumes,

and just two and a half hours.

We have to make a bird

-and we have to age them.
-Okay, right.

Technical ability is what I'm looking for.

Can you tell that
that person's wearing a prosthetic?

If I can see the difference in skin tone,
or the shine, or something's too matte,

it's totally unacceptable.

And also, I'm looking for how they work,

and interact with each other in the team

and also their model
that they're working on.

[Dominic] Everyone's coming
with a different skill ability.

What I want them to do
is listen and learn from each other.

Even those people that have got it down,

they should be listening
to the people that maybe don't

because those people are gonna come
from a different point of view

and maybe see things differently.

Believability is the key to this look,

and they have to work together
to create that look.

[Stacey] Each team has some knowledge
in special effects makeup.

and should organize themselves
by appointing a makeup supervisor.

[Nikki] Who's actually got the most
experience with prosthetics?

-Yeah, we...
-I did special effects at uni.

And I did special effects at college,
so...

It's the thing where
you probably know more

'cause yours is probably in more depth.

-So...
-Probably.

I did my degree in technical arts
and special effects.

Because I have basic skill in it,

I might have a little bit of an edge

that hopefully will keep me
out of them Face Off chairs.

They've given us Telesis.
Telesis 8 is the only adhesive

I don't really know how to use.

[Paige] Let's read it again
and then do it.

While the bird team get into a flap,

the warrior pigs are much more regimented.

So if we put this
where the brows are supposed to be...

-[Belinda] This way...
-Mathieu's kinda leading the team

just because he has a stronger knowledge
in the prosthetics, so...

I'm willing to just, like, "Mathieu,
tell us what to do, and we'll do it."

My makeup style would probably
be described as freaky,

creepy, weird.

Frenchman Mathieu has long been drawn
to the dark sides of makeup.

I've always been, uh, kind of
a weird child, and from my teenage days,

I was doing makeup and
weird monster kinda thing on my face.

I just released the beast inside me.

My dream job would be to be working as
a freelance special effect makeup artist,

not only in the movies,
but in the music industry, the fashion.

If this was a pure special effects
contest, I would definitely win it.

I'm going to need your help, Belinda.

-Mm-hm.
-Just tell me if I'm nicely centered.

-Uh... Right now, they're even on there?
-So is that not it?

So, braid all of this back.

Make sure that you, um,
scrape all of these fine little hairs up.

Taking the lead with the royal cats
is Steph.

We're definitely going to need a bald cap
for this, I think,

and I think I saw some at the front.

To impress the judges,

much depends on how well the teams blend
their prosthetics into the actor's skin.

[Belinda] Oh, wow.

Melt it into the skin.

[gasps] That looks like
the most difficult part.

-That's fine, that's fine.
-Hi, guys.

-Hey!
-Hello!

With the prosthetics on,
the only way to blend the edge

is to use a substance called acetone.

What are you using there to blend
the edge off with?

-[Tiffany] Thinner.
-Thinner?

Yeah.

Thinner is used for thinning glue,
not for blending.

Okay, interesting.

I'll... I'll leave you guys to it.

-[Nikki] Is it working?
-[Paige] No.

Ah, I'm gutted for the girls,
because I do think you can tell

that they just look like
stuck on bits of silicone.

[David] Yes, they know it'll never work.

It literally is never ever gonna work.
They're gonna be in trouble.

Hi, guys.

-Hello.
-Hello.

Have you done bald caps before?

No, like, Steph's got a lot more
experience with prosthetics than we have.

-Yeah.
-So Steph's kind of working on this one,

and we're gonna try and replicate
what she's doing on this...

-Okay.
-...under her watchful eye.

Ooh!

It's our first one.
This literally is our child.

-It's going to be a homosexual and ginger
-[laughing]

-The best.
-The best.

You're happy with
the sort of placement of the pieces

-and how your ears are?
-We... We went a bit low on this one,

so it's not... nicely done,

but I think, with the makeup,
we're gonna make it work.

Excellent. Great.

From the placement to the painting,

this industry relies on planning
your time efficiently

so not to be late on set.

With time running out...

Shall I ask Mathieu?

...the bird professor team
are still no closer

to blending their beaks.

We need to blend it out.

-How do we blend it out?
-Use acetone.

To blend the edges, yeah.

Did you get more of that...

Mathieu said that we need to blend out
the edges with acetone, not the thinner.

[Paige] We didn't realize
there were products,

so now we're just trying to do things as
quick as possible so we can get it done.

I feel very frustrated,
we wasted a lot of time.

So much quicker.

-Is it?
-Yeah.

You have one hour left, guys.

Just one more hour.

We're just powdering the skin
with translucent powder to stop...

the makeup that we've applied from moving,

so it just keeps
the layers on top of each other

so we can build up depth and texture.

We've still got a lot to do, because
we're still trying to get our blend.

Even though we've got no time,
we just need to keep our cool,

because prosthetics can go very wrong
very quickly.

30 minutes left.

As final checks commence,

Nikki, Paige and Tiffany have only just
finished applying their prosthetics.

This guy doesn't look any different
to what he...

-he did when I saw him quite a while ago.
-Yeah, we...

Yea, we're going to add more stuff to it.

Because the pieces don't have
any color on at the moment.

-Yeah.
-Um, whereas all you're doing

is just painting
the actor even more.

For the look to be complete,

it's not just about makeup,

it also has to work with the costume
provided.

-There you go.
-[chuckles]

-That's all right.
-Great stuff.

Oh, shit.

Okay. Guys, we need to add blood to this.

[Tiffany] Oh.

Why would there be a bloodstain
on the guy's shirt?

I know, but
I just don't think we have time.

So I'm just gonna stand here
and do nothing, then.

You should be doing the look.
I'm not being funny.

Myself, Nikki, and Paige
are strong-minded.

Paige is very good at winging it,
but she's quite loud.

So I think it's gonna be
a bit of, like, a... a battle.

Me and Nikki will probably have
to rein her in a bit.

[gasps] Do you know what it should be?

It should have been she's the old lady
and he beat her up

-'cause he's like...
-No, he's not...

-No... No!
-He's a nice man, Paige.

-No! No, this is the story...
-We like this guy.

No, no, no, no, no.
Listen. Don't think so literal.

That's why I've been winning challenges,
I haven't been thinking literal.

-Okay.
-Literally, you see the blood there.

Take it and run with it.

-Like...
-I'm not saying we shouldn't say that.

-But I think...
...But anyway, it's fine, it's whatever.

-There's no blood.
-I'm not saying there's no blood.

[Tiffany] I'm feeling stressed.

Just because, in her eyes,

a tiny little speck of blood
was really bothering her,

it stopped what she was doing.

It says we've been given a brief
to create a character for a film.

-Not to make the film for them.
-Yes! These two have to match.

-I'm not gonna argue.
We should get the face closed down.

If no one wants to listen to me,
that's fine.

I'm nervous a little bit about

the disagreement
between Tiffany and Paige.

I don't think that's gonna go down
well with the judges at all.

It is really unprofessional.

All right, I'm gonna take
this off and just put the hat on.

-Careful, don't rip his ear off.
-[Nikki] Yeah, please.

Okay, guys,
you're into your last ten minutes.

Ten more minutes.

[Stacey] With the screen test approaching,

the judges check in for last looks.

I'm really, really happy
with what we've all done.

-[David] 30 seconds!
-Aww! Okay!

-Yeah!
-[laughing]

-Put it on! [laughs]
-On the nose...

Okay, guys, that's it. Time's up.

-[laughing]
-What's the matter?

What are you doing to me?

I hope you're insured.

[Nikki] Today was a little bit of a...

kerfuffle, if I can call it that,

so I don't think that will go down
well with the judges.

-I'm so sorry.
-No, it's fine.

If that happened backstage...

in my makeup room,

-out, out.
-Yeah.

Okay, guys, step away from your actors.

With the look complete,

it's time to see how the creatures
appear on camera.

First, the royal cats.

-Mrow!
-[David] You took a risk,

applying two bald caps,

uh, which is very difficult
in the time you had.

Uh... It kind of paid off. Not quite
finished on one of the characters.

Obviously, the paint stops three-quarters
past the head. Is that just time?

If we worked a bit quicker because
we didn't have to learn as much,

we'd have got a bit further.

[David] It's not necessarily
working quicker, it's working smarter.

-Mm-hm.
-And I think the impact of that on set,

you know, could be quite huge.

Incredible effort.

Really believable characters.

Not complete.

Next, the warrior pigs.

Okay, you could have brought the dirt down
a bit more on the neck area and things,

but I think you
sort of just about got away with it.

I possibly would have liked
to see

-a little bit more dirt...
-[grunting]

..if I was going to be
a cantankerous bitch...

[laughter]

-[snarling]
-...but...

what I'd like to say is...

ding, dong!

You nailed it.

I am so impressed.

Yeah, so absolutely gobsmacked,
amazed.

[whispers] Oh, my God.

And finally,

some ruffled feathers
with the wise old birds,

minus one pair of feathery trousers.

Is there a reason why
his outfit is not complete?

-Uh, we...
-Um...

Well, he nearly... nearly died
attempting to put those trousers on.

This gentleman is not an object.

You can't just be chucking him about.

If that had happened
on a professional shoot,

there could have been
some major consequences with that.

-Remain professional.
-Mm-hm.

Because your career could end like that.

-It doesn't have to be a big actor.
If that's any actor...

-[Paige] Yeah.
-...the chances are they'll hear that,

they won't want to work with you.

They'll go to the producers or directors
and say, "That person needs to go."

There seemed to be a little bit of a...
quite a heated discussion at one point.

I noticed there was bloodstains
on our costumes and...

I kind of wanted to build,
like, a concept around that.

-You're not the scriptwriter.
-[Paige] Mm.

You haven't created that character,

so you can't take it anywhere.

Your job as the makeup artist

is to create the character
based on the brief you're given.

You've produced some good makeups,

but I just have to think
of who I may employ later on,

and would I want someone on my team
who's gonna kick off?

-[sighs] I just don't think I would, so...
-Mm.

I just think
you let yourselves down there.

With all three teams
having received their critique,

the judges must now decide who
impressed the most and wins the prize,

first pick of the prosthetics
in tomorrow's creative brief.

There's one obvious team
that's the winner, uh... personally.

I don't know what you guys, uh...

Oh, absolutely. Head...
Head and shoulders above.

[Stacey] Gather round,. please.

The judges have made a decision

in terms of who did
particularly well today.

We have decided the best team,

because of their teamwork,

their technical ability, use of color,

can only go to...

-the pig warriors.
-[cheering]

[Ellis] Very good!

Well done, guys.

This is actually why I'm here,
because I want to show my skills.

I want to show that I can work in a team.
I can work alone. I can show my art.

I want the judges to give me
more ding dong.

Second creative challenge today. [sighs]

I'm feeling quite good about it, actually.

It's gonna be
a full prosthetic thing, so...

I'll definitely be able to show bits
about my skills and stuff.

[Stacey] At Glow Up HQ,

the judges must decide which two MUAs
least impressed in yesterday's brief.

I still can't get out of my head

the girls' team, when they were bickering
and fighting in front of their actor.

[Val] I'm actually quite emotional.

Paige, she reminds me of a mini-me
when I first started,

and then she goes
and pulls this diva thing.

Paige was a hothead yesterday,

but Tiffany, she bit back.

Nikki stood back and let it happen.

So I think all three showed
a lack of professionalism.

[Stacey] The judges
have reached a decision.

Okay, gang, please find your seat.

Your names are on the back of the chairs.

If an MUA's name is on
one of the two red chairs,

they'll go into the elimination Face Off
at the end of the day.

There's only one way
to escape the red chairs.

Blow the judges away
in the next brief,

and hope another MUA underachieves.

My biggest worry of today
is that if I am sat in that red chair,

it's really gonna affect my mentality
as I'm working.

-[whispers] You're okay. You're okay.
-[mouths]

Unfortunately, girls, Paige, Tiffany,
you are in the Face Off chairs.

[Val] Your next creative brief,

we would like you to think

beyond "Once upon a time".

We want you to create a new character

that could easily fit into

your favorite childhood story.

[Dominic] Are you ready?

Bring in your models!

As the MUAs have been allowed
to prepare for this brief,

each has been supplied
with a model to suit their look.

-Great!
-Hi, you all right?

[Dominic] Mathieu, Ellis, Belinda,

congratulations, you three,
on winning yesterday's brief.

Your reward today is you get first
dibs at all the prosthetics in the back.

After that, everyone else can have a go.

MUAs, you have two and a half hours
before your chair turns into a pumpkin.

Your time starts now!

Are we actually starting?
Is it starting? Oh, it's starting.

By getting first pick of the ears, noses,

horns, even gills on offer,

yesterday's winners can get the right
prosthetics to suit their look today.

Which nose?

There is quite a lot available,
but I want to avoid to go too witchy,

so I might just go with only a nose.

That nose, yeah.
That... That would be awesome.

They have nice edges.

The prosthetic looks really good,
so I'm quite excited.

So I'm doing Cinderella.

And I thought,
because in the original story,

-there was no fairy godmother...
-Yeah?

There was, like, a tree.

I saw that it almost embodied the spirit
of Cinderella's mum, who died.

This story means so much to me, because
she lost her mother at the age of ten

and I was the same age.

I really felt that connection
when I watched the story at that age.

It was the first time I'd seen
grief shown in this way,

and that it was okay, and you can still
come through it, the other side.

So...

it's such an emotional piece for me.

[Stacey] Without any prosthetic bark
for her tree spirit fairy godmother,

Belinda is going to have to improvise

with fish gills.

-That's different.
-Mm.

Once yesterday's winners
have selected their prosthetics,

the other MUAs get their pick.

So I'm doing a feline character.

I've gone for the cat face,

but I'm just a little bit worried
that it's a little bit obvious.

Basically, you're a toy maker.
You're working for the Red Queen,

-Okay.
-But before she starts chopping head off,

uh, she just decided to,

like, burn your house
and just bury it to the ground.

Even though Mathieu
was a winner yesterday,

he can still fall into the Face Off today

if his charred toymaker
in Wonderland look

fails to impress the judges.

And you gonna have a lot going on
on your face,

because I'm gonna be gluing PVC
all over your face.

-Oh, wow!
-So, I'm going a bit crazy, but...

-Yeah. Mm.
-[clattering]

The fact that he had
first dibs of the prosthetic choice,

he's played it a little bit safe.

Can you look on the left? To your left?

Oh, you're gonna look amazing!

This is really Mathieu's speciality,

and... I want to be wowed.

-Gonna be so perfect.
-[chuckles]

The concept I'm going for is a... helper

for the children in Hansel and Gretel.

So I'm creating, like, an elvish

kind of spirit of a butterfly
to kind of help them out.

So the concept came from just the fact
that I've always had

strong powerful women in my life

who've literally helped me
get through everything.

My concept for today
is a mystical fairy-elf hybrid.

Um, it's gonna fit
into the story of Peter Pan.

I've always been fascinated
by the idea of Neverland,

and it being a whole other world
that has limitless opportunities.

When I was younger
and I wanted all these opportunities,

and to get out of where I was living
to another place,

I wish I had that character there
to help me.

So now I want to create that character
and incorporate that into the story.

Last week, Brandon only narrowly survived
the Face Off.

A newcomer
to the world of prosthetics,

he needs to do better today
with his Neverland fairy elf.

The prosthetic I'm going for
is the ears.

Um, once they are on,
I'm gonna see if it needs a nose or not.

The reason
I went for the ears first is because

an elf without ears isn't an elf,
it's just a person.

My story is inspired by
The Prince and the Frog fairy tale.

When I was a kid,
my mum would tell that to me

and tell me to never judge
a book by its cover.

Dragons are such a common feature
in so many fairy tales,

but they're never the protagonist, so...

I thought that was
something interesting to play with.

[Stacey] As Tiffany is
already in the Face Off chairs,

she's hoping to get out of them

by using three prosthetics
in her dragon prince look.

It is a bit of a concern,
just because that's a lot of work,

but I think that if I'm in this chair,
I have to be ambitious and I have to...

I guess, prove to the judges that,
you know, I do deserve to be here still.

Paige is also in the red chairs.

I'm not really that stressed.

Um...

Like, I'm a pretty creative person.

While the other MUAs have a clear plan,

Paige is taking a more relaxed approach.

I don't know what my next step is yet.
I haven't thought that far ahead.

Mathieu, where's the glue that you use
to stick the prosthetics?

-I don't know. I didn't touch it.
-Telesis...

-Where is it?
-It's on the table and I need it as well.

-My ears are...
-Where is it?

I don't know where it is. I think...

Do you think spirit gum can work as fine,
cos I have spirit gum?

-Are you doing a fierce one?
-No, I'm doing horns.

Oh, yeah, it should be fine, then.

What is going on here?

[David] I am concerned already,

because yesterday,
I kept drumming into them,

make sure you have a plan.

And you look at Paige, I can't see
what she's doing there at all.

Oh.

-What?
-Well, you can, I can use...

Um, what's it called, what did you use
to stick on your prosthetic?

-Nothing yet. I'm gonna use the...
-You can use spirit gum, right?

You can. Are you doing little ones?

-Yeah.
-Yeah. It's fine.

-Just blend the edges away.
-Just so...

-Make sure you tap it so it goes stringy.
-Tap, tap.

Okay, cool.

This horn is bigger.

Like, it curves more.

Ugh!

I should have... I should have
cut this before, because...

-Yeah.
-Okay, you know what I'm gonna do?

[sighs]

Gonna need to poke a hole.

[Val] MUAs, you've had one hour.

[Dominic] You've got 90 minutes remaining.

Look straight ahead.

Yeah, I'm a lot happier with this one.

-We popped these on.
-Yeah. We've got gills glued on,

we're going for a bit of
an aquatic creature.

For her look, Steph is going for
a Little Mermaid-inspired theme.

She is a... a sort of a siren
that bring souls in, so...

But every time
that she takes a soul her...

she decays slowly herself.

-You got it?
-I feel like...

-[laughs] Yeah!
-It's so clear.

I'm not gonna put another prosthetic

because you're gonna be awesome
just like this,

and...

I'm gonna get ready to paint.

[Dominic] Brandon,
we can clearly see, after an hour,

he's applied one ear,

which makes me think after two hours,
he will have applied two ears,

which means he's got 30 minutes
to do something.

So if he's not careful,

he is going to really screw himself over.

I'm panicking a little bit
because my prosthetic isn't sticking down.

Um, I'm just trying to stay focused,

and hopefully,
I'll be able to get something together.

I'm worried. I'm really worried about him.

Well, it's just... It's, um...

[Dominic] He's wasting time.

Get the second ear on! [laughs]

-[Val] Look!He's taking it off!
-Don't look at my work.

-Oh, God!
-Taking the ear off.

I think I'm gonna have to scrap the ears,

-because it's not working.
-Okay.

What are you doing, Brandon?

Halfway through the challenge,
he's done nothing.

[Val] He's having a panic attack.

-He's off.
-He's off.

-[Dominic] He's left the room.
-[David] He's off.

-He's left the room.
-Man down! Man down!

He needs to just... pull it together.

O... M... G.

[Ellis] Has he just walked out?

What's wrong, sweetheart?

Huh?

Brandon walked out.

-What's wrong?
-[sobs]

[whispers] It's just so much pressure, I...

-Hey?
-It's just so much pressure.

Yeah, of course.

Don't quit, 'cause you will really
regret it and you'll kick yourself.

-Just go straight back to your chair.
-Yeah.

Take a moment,

-and if you need to speak to David...
-Yeah.

speak to him, okay?

Mm.

-Hi.
-Hey.

[Brandon sighs]

You need to go with a piece that's easy.

All these edges are really easy
to blend, right?

And I've got some of the glue in one
of these that you can take with you.

Paint it on the skin, hairdry it,

-pop them together.
-One of...

No, this here. Look.

Nikki's idea is based
on an imaginary cat-like figure

from her favorite fairy tale, Rapunzel.

Nikki could be quite literal and give us,

you know, the cat's whiskers
and everything.

I'd like to hope that she's taking
the idea of the cat shape

and creating a new character.

I mean... at that angle,
ooh, that looks good.

Mroww!

MUAs, you've just got 20 minutes left.
Get a move on.

While the other MUAs apply makeup,

Paige is still applying prosthetics.

They look like my boobs
when I was in my 20s.

-Honestly, don't!
-[both laughing]

Those days are gone.

Talk me through your idea.

So my idea is going to be

a protector of Sleeping Beauty.

My... My character's going to be
the one

that's there battling all her battles
for her while she's asleep, so...

I kind of feel like that's God
with me every time, like,

I'm in hard time and hardship...

She's still sticking on those horns.

You don't need to, like, throw on a bunch
of makeup to make it look creative,

or look amazing, so... yeah.

MUAs, you've got five minutes left.

This is me.

This is really what it's... what it's...

What it is to be inside me, you know?

[Val] 30 seconds.

OK, MUAs, that's us done.

Time is up.

You need to take your models
through to the studio to be photographed.

Thank you.

Nikki, please step forward.

The character that I've created

is a strong feline female character
that I aspire to be.

I don't think I need to point out
too much about the edges.

-Yeah.
-There's an issue under the eyes.

In the coloring, it would have been nice
if you had incorporated

some brush strokes of fur.

I really do like the fact
that you went big with your piece.

You weren't messing around.

You picked up a piece. You didn't know
if it was gonna fit.

You stuck it on. You went for it.

And you know what?

It's those sort of big ballsy moves
that are gonna make you noticed.

-Thank you.
-Brandon.

[David] We all know what happened
earlier on when you had some problems.

[sighs] You know, that just can't happen
in the real world.

[Dominic] There is a moment
that you have to realize...

"Babe, this ain't workin'.

So we need to quit it
and do something else."

And that should have come earlier to you.

I don't think you could bring it back.
I think you drowned.

And... And it's a shame. Belinda.

I was very impressed

with the way you took the gill prosthetic

and you made it look like wood.

[Dominic] I want to highlight this part
on the forehead.

Oh, hello, little Knotty McKnotty.
That's really clever.

Can Steph come up, please?

[Steph] This character
is from The Little Mermaid,

distant cousin from the sea witch.

So I wanted to represent the plushy,
beautiful aquatic fish on the one side,

the evil, decaying, rotting puffer fish
that we have on the other side...

uh, that also leaks poison. [laughs]

Whatever story you chose to tell us
today,

we probably would have believed it,

because we'd be able to find
that story in there somewhere.

This is a kaleidoscope

of kitchen sink ideas,

and I don't mean that in a bad way.

I think you find it very difficult
to say, "Stop!"

-[laughs]
-You know, I'd like to see you

do something

that's perhaps a little more pure.

-But well done.
-Thank you.

Leigh.

My fairy tale was Hansel and Gretel.

I wanted to create another villain
to add to the story

-to help the witch.
-I love me a gingerbread house.

I don't see gingerbread.

The frosting, like,
to me, frosting is, like, thick,

and it's creamy, almost like toothpaste.

It's that sort of tubular...

Paint that on the brows,
and maybe that could be the lips.

There was more elaboration
you could have done.

However,

that prosthetic is damn good.

I think you should be really proud
of yourself. Well done.

[David] Ellis.

[applause]

You absolutely nailed this.

It is marvelous!

You had a mature woman.

-You gave her a facelift through makeup.
-[laughter]

You did, because the ears pulled it back.

You kept this in a,
sort of, like, a triangle.

You know, this makeup here
was sort of, like, pushing up.

You were creating an illusion,

and it paid off.

Ding, dong.

-I know, I know. I'm so excited.
-Calm down!

Marvelous.

[David] I think it's probably
my strongest look of the day.

The whole thing looks great.
So, well done.

[Dominic] Mathieu.

So I choose Alice in Wonderland.

He was a toy maker for the Red Queen.

It raised from the ashes of his house
and he met Alice.

Did it turn out how you wanted
it to turn out?

Yeah, it's...
I was going for that kind of look.

I wanted it to be a bit dirty,
a bit ashy, without going too much.

I think, uh... I am quite happy with it.

I'm kind of disappointed,

because you're the prosthetics guy
within the group.

So I was expecting...

not to be full of prosthetics,
but I was expecting prosthetic makeup,

'cause this could be your only chance.

I think you've missed a trick there.

This was your moment to shine.
This was your opportunity to kind of...

tell all these others
that you are here to play tough,

and you kind of fell a bit short.

You are our prosthetics champion.

That so annoys me.

That bit there.

It doesn't look like
you've attempted to hide it.

It doesn't look like there's any fillers,

-or stipple, or anything like that.
-I just didn't do it.

I should have, definitely.

The execution of your character works.

But, like the others,
I was expecting more.

[all] Thank you.

-[David] Thank you, Mathieu.
-Paige.

My character is based on the fairy tale
Sleeping Beauty.

And she is the protector
of Sleeping Beauty.

-Paige, you are fearless.
-[laughs]

[Val] OMG.

You spent so long

-putting on your horns.
-Yeah.

-[Val] I was panicking, thinking...
-[David] Yeah, I was.

"She's not...
she's not gonna have enough time!"

There's... You know,
it was kind of like, two hours

and there still wasn't
a skerrick of makeup on the skin.

[Dominic] And you weren't even panicking.

Everyone else was absolutely crazy and...

[high-pitched] "I'm just Paige.
I'm just putting on the makeup

'cause everything's gonna be fine."

Everything just was fine.

[Val] You've winged it again.

-[laughs]
-[Dominic] If you just planned,

if you just prepare a little bit,

you could come out
with something so incredible.

You would blow this competition away.

But don't take that as a reason
to slack off.

Thanks, Paige.

Tiff.

[Tiffany] My fairy tale
was The Frog Prince.

My mum's saying is always, erm,

you have to kiss a few frogs
before you find your prince.

[Dominic] I want to point out
that you did three prosthetic pieces,

two horns and a chin.

You did more prosthetics than anyone else.

Marvelous!

This is how you get your bottom
out of the Face Off chair.

That was incredible.

You chose this... this huge chin

and you owned it, you nailed it.

The color work is incredible,
your shading.

I have nothing but love for that picture.

Ding, dong.

[sighs]

I wasn't expecting the feedback,
so I just kind of lost it a bit, um...

'cause I was really worried
about this week,

and I just really thought
I was gonna go home, so...

Critiques over, the judges must now
decide whether Tiffany and Paige

have done enough
to escape the Face Off chairs,

and if so, which two MUAs
should take their place.

-Pretty horrible.
-What is it?

I mean, I know it was probably the horns
were supposed to be on upside down,

but I look at the horns
being on upside down.

[Dominic] I just expected
this big prosthetic bonanza.

-Yeah.
-And...

I don't think we got that at all.

I just wanted more, like where's the chin?

Where's the cheeks? Where's the...

Where's the craziness?

-It was just disappointing.
-[David] Yeah.

You take off those bits of paper,
what have you got? You got a nose.

Next.

She's telling a story,

but I'm not sure if I'm interested.

This. I got it.

Then he told the story,
and I'm like, "Really?

I don't get it."

[David] I know in my head

who I would like

to be in the Face Off chairs.

-Do you know who you would like?
-I think so.

Me too.

Hey.

Okay.

So, Paige,

Tiff, you were both in the Face Off chairs
today.

The question is have you done enough

to dodge elimination?

Hell, yeah!

-Oh!
-[Val] Whoo-hoo!

-[Paige] Oh! I feel like I can breathe!
-You two have beat the seat.

We are now needing to look

for two more candidates.

The first makeup artist
going into the Face Off...

is Brandon.

I'm really sorry.
You had a really tough day.

So I kind of hope you understand why.

The second makeup artist

is Mathieu.

Yesterday, you were just amazing.
You were so on top,

and today, we felt let down.

We felt like you didn't deliver enough.

Judges, thank you so much.

I'll bring them through shortly.

Guys, please say your goodbyes,
because one of you will not be returning.

For the Face Off,
so neither MUA has an advantage,

they will make up identical twins.

In the last two briefs,
time management has been key.

So, for this Face Off,

we're giving you five minutes,

five products, and just five tools.

[Val] It's up to you what look
you choose to create.

You could be playful.

You could be dramatic.

You could be absolutely bonkers.

We will be looking for speed,

spontaneity,

and what every great MUA needs
in their kit,

creativity.

This Face Off is about minimum product,

minimum time, and maximum effect.

You can do something incredible
in a flash.

I'm looking for something bold.

Think about color and texture.

Go big. Make an impression.

Guys, your time starts... now.
Help yourself.

Guys, that's a minute gone.

You have 30 seconds remaining.

Ten, nine,

eight, seven,

six, five,

four, three,

two, one.

Please finish what you're doing.

Put down your tools.

Well done.That's a tough gig.
Judges! Do you want to have a quick nose?

Let's have a look.

[Val] I think we need a conflab.

-[Stacey] No sweat.
-Okay.

[whispers] You feeling okay?

Um... I just let my mind speak, so...
I don't know.

There is no spontaneity in there.

There is no creativity.
Both of them were absolutely flat.

It's too considered.
There's no sort of passionate woosh.

-Yeah.
-There's none of that.

Like, I wanted to... Like, in your hands,
aah, stick on your face,

rub the face, and just...

-Nobody picked up the paint.
-Do something.

-[Val] They went for gray shadow.
-[Dominic] It's dull.

-Okay. You ready?
-Yeah.

-Yeah.
-Come on, then.

[Val] Mathieu...

I just can't believe it.
I just cannot believe it.

I see a great artist.

An artist that just has feeling

and just goes with it.

Our brief was spontaneity,

creativity.

You can do whatever you want.

I thought you were gonna pick up paint,
get up there,

and go like that,

and just stand back and go, like,
"Yeah. That's spontaneous."

And I thought you were gonna

go like that to me, and say, like,
"There you are. You've got it."

And I would have loved that.

-We both would have loved that.
-Yeah.

-[Dominic] Your hand is more exciting...
-[Val] You got...

than your makeup,

and that's where the problem starts.

[Mathieu whispers] Okay.

[Dominic] Brandon, you went straight in
and went safe.

You picked up an eye pencil
and started doing a smokey eye.

And it's like...
"Where's the spontaneity?"

However...

I could see something tick
in your head, thinking...

"This is not working.
I need to shift gear."

And you did shift gear,

and you

swiped on some orange under the eye,

and it's different.

Have you reached a decision?

-[Val] Yes, we have.
-[Dominic] We have.

Mathieu,

unfortunately, you're gonna be
packing your kit and going home.

-All right.
-[Stacey] Mathieu, I'm so sorry.

Brandon, yet again, you are safe.

-Congratulations. I'll take you through.
-Thank you.

-Mathieu, best of luck. Thank you.
-I'm a bit disappointed in myself.

I should have take the paint
and go for it. That was my first idea.

But I played it safe,

and if I went with my first idea,
I might still be in the competition.

I think that experience
just changed me so much.

This is definitely not the end.

Thank you so much, Mathieu.

-Thanks, judges...
-[Val] It's a shocker.

It's a real shocker.

We've lost
a great prosthetics makeup artist.

I mean,
these guys have got to start believing

that they know what they're doing.

I can't believe that I actually have
got out of there twice.

There's never gonna be a chance
that I'm gonna be in there again.

-[shouting]
-Um... I wanna win the challenges.

Aah! See, I told you.

I wanna show the judges that they made
the right decision to keep me here.
