Glow Up: Britain's Next Make-Up Star (2019–…): Season 1, Episode 1 - Magazine Beauty Editorial - full transcript

The competitors are challenged to produce a look which fits the 'rebellion' brief for a Marie Claire photo shoot. The final part pits the Make Up Artist (MUA) against each other, and their creative brief is "What does beauty mean ...

[Stacey] In bedrooms
up and down the country,

a makeup revolution has begun.

-Now, out of thousands that applied...
-Whoo!

...ten aspiring makeup artists have
a chance to make it in the real world.

Each week, they'll need to show skill...

Marvelous.

...artistry and imagination.

It's so beautifully executed.

Every week, the two who least impress...

I feel like I can't breathe.

...will head in to a Face Off.

The loser goes home.

Until just one remains to land a contract

assisting the world's biggest
makeup artists.

It's time to Glow Up.

Whoo!

Oh, my God.

-[laughter]
-This is mental.

Do you think that's where
the judges will be sat?

-Like, watching the whole time?
-Trying to see your work.

I'm literally here, they're gonna be sat
there the whole time.

Deciding whose work hits the mark
and whose falls short

will be two giants
of the makeup industry.

As a senior artist for MAC Cosmetics,

Dominic Skinner is at the forefront
of makeup trendsetting,

delivering groundbreaking looks
at fashion weeks around the world.

I'm looking for an MUA
that just sees things differently.

It's the creative makeup artists
pushing this industry forward,

and that's what I'm excited to see.

L'Oréal Paris Global Makeup Director,
Val Garland,

has been fashioning catwalk looks,

front covers and style icons
for over 25 years,

working with everyone from Lady Gaga
to Alexander McQueen.

[Val] I'm looking to be inspired.

I'm looking for the next generation
of makeup artists.

I want to be so excited
that I feel like crying.

Hey.

-[man] Hi!
-Come over. You look absolutely terrified.

[laughter]

Over the next eight weeks,
you will be immersed and tested

in the world of makeup artistry.

This week's theme is beauty,

and for your first assignment,

you will be competing to have your work

in one of
the world's leading fashion magazines,

Marie Claire.

-Oh, my God.
-Just leave it like...

Today's brief, known in the trade
as a beauty editorial,

will demand perfect technique
and a bold vision.

This is straight-on, full-face beauty.

[woman] Yeah, lovely.

It is so close,

you really can't hide any mistakes
that you might make on a bigger picture.

And it won't just be Val and Dom
the MUAs need to impress.

Each week,
they'll also face a guest judge.

You can take it down a little bit.

This week's has been shooting
beauty editorials for nearly 20 years.

Come in, pop yourselves round.

So, allow me to introduce you.
This is Lisa Oxenham,

the style and beauty director
for the magazine.

Okay? So, she's in charge,
she's your boss for the day.

Today we're going to shoot
a beauty editorial

that would challenge our readers
to up their makeup game.

The theme is rebellion.

A true rebel stands up for
what they believe in is right

and refuses to obey any of the rules.

So go out and be adventurous with this.
Really create a unique look.

So we've got five looks in total

and then the fifth and final look
will come from one of you guys.

-So new!
-[nervous laughter]

You've got one hour to absolutely knock it
out of the park, impress your first boss.

Good luck, your models
are waiting for you.

[all] Thank you.

To level the playing field, each of the
MUAs have been randomly allocated a model.

It's about rebellion, and I really want
to see somebody that's really innovative

with their techniques.

Somebody that's using their product
in a completely new way,

as well as creating a
really impactful look.

I'm gonna stick with a nude lip so it
doesn't take any attention off the eye.

And then I'm gonna put lip gloss
over the eye shadow.

Editorial's not really up my street,
so I could maybe be taking a risk,

but I'm all about that.

For Dina, the world of fashion magazines
is a long way from her life back at home.

At the moment, I work on the
deli counter at Morrison's,

but I'm also a vegetarian,
so that's no good for me.

My dream job would be to work
behind TV and film,

to maybe sit in a cinema and watch
the screen and think, "I did that."

I would say
I'm not a normal makeup artist,

I don't really like just doing
the plain glam.

I love using makeup to express
the way that I look,

changing myself into fantasy characters.

When somebody asks me to do their
makeup, I'm like,

"Pfft. Do you not just wanna
be the Grinch or, like,

the Joker from Batman?"

[laughs]

[Stacey] All the MUAs have varying
makeup backgrounds and interests.

Despite being the oldest of the group,

Leigh only picked up a makeup
brush nine months ago.

I've never worked with models before,
so this is very exciting for me.

We'll find out in, like, 59 minutes' time,
see how stressed I am.

-When was the last time you moisturized?
-Shut up, what you chatting?

No, because... I'm asking...
Everybody's super matte upstairs,

-so I don't wanna go over the top.
-I...

Are you okay with me using my hands
to work products into your face?

For beauty editorial work,
the model's skin has to be flawless.

They may think their skin looks
perfect in real life,

but the real test will be how it
photographs when exposed to studio lights.

Too matte and it will look lifeless.

Too glossy and it will shine.

I'm gonna just prep the skin first

to get the skin, like,
as, like, glowy as possible,

then I'm just gonna smash as much
color onto the eyes as possible!

She's got quite nice brows, I'm gonna do
a liner that goes through her brows.

And for her rebel eye, Paige is also going
to be using unconventional products.

I'm gonna be using the liquid lipsticks,
because it's a lot more pigmented

and a lot of people, like,
don't realize it's so multipurpose,

and when people see me doing it,
they're like, "Wait, what the hell?"

[woman] Havin' a time limit
is really weird.

I like just gettin' in the zone
and seein' where it takes me

and sometimes that takes, like, three
hours, and I don't have that today, so...

I think the first time
I, like, really recognized makeup

was watching my mum do makeup
in the mirror,

and I remember thinking, "That is, like,
the most beautiful thing I've ever seen,"

like, the transformation,
which is still what I love today.

Belinda fits in her love for illusion
makeup around a busy life as a young mum

and full-time carer.

[Belinda] Most days, I'm waking up
at about five o'clock,

so that I can, say, get a makeup
look in before I go to work.

I absolutely love it and I would just love
for that to be a career as well.

That's the dream, isn't it?
Doing something that you love. Every day.

Who are you looking out for?

Who's your main competition?

I feel like it's everyone around me.

-Like they've been positioned.
-They're everywhere!

-They're everywhere!
-No, but, like, specifically...

Brandon probably, he's so confident in it.

-Brandon?
-Yeah?

-How's your thing going?
-So far, so good.

I think it's going well.

I'm really confident about
this brief, just because

fashion is a lot
of what I base my work around.

-[Stacey] How's it going?
-Really good.

You nervous?

-No. [laughs]
-No? Oh, I love it.

No, don't... don't ask silly questions,
Stacey.

What else have you got to do?
We're about halfway in.

I'm quite happy with how it is, I'm just
gonna intensify the eye closer to the end,

but yeah, everything so far
I'm really happy with.

How do you intensify the color to the end?

Right at the end I'll put a clear gloss
right over it

and it'll just really make it pop.

25 minutes left.

Oh, Jesus. Close your eyes for me.

[Dina] I'm a bit nervous
about the time I've got left,

so I need to hurry up and
speed up my game.

I'm focused on the eyes,
just 'cause I really want a clean line.

[laughs] Pressure... No pressure!

My placement and my color,
I was happy with a while ago,

so I'm just, kind of,
perfecting everything now.

Guys, you've got three minutes left.

Okay, I'm done. I don't wanna fiddle.

If I fiddle too much,
then it just goes all to pot. [laughs]

-You've got to learn to know when to stop.
-[both chuckle]

[contestants gasping]

-Oh.
-Oh, my God, they're here.

-Oh.
-Oh, my God.

I feel like my heart's about
to fall out of my chest.

[laughs]

Literally, my idol's, like, right next
to me and critiquing my work,

so, if I pass out, I am so sorry.

Got one minute to go, guys.
Make the most of it.

Finished. I'm looking round, everyone's
still working,

so it feels a bit weird,
but I think I'm confident.

I'm gonna stop
now before I change anything else.

I... I did say I wasn't gonna fiddle.

This is me fiddlin'! [laughs]

Time up, brushes down,
your models should be photo ready.

[Ellis] I cannot wait
to see yours photographed.

-I didn't use any foundation, really.
-Shut up!

I literally color corrected around
the mouth a tiny bit. That was it.

I think my look, compared to the brief,
was very on point,

and yeah, so I think I could have
a good chance of winning this challenge.

But how the model looks in the flesh
is unimportant.

It's what they look like on camera
which will determine who wins the brief.

First to receive their critique
is Belinda.

[Val] That is an incredible,
beautiful makeup

-in the real.
-Mm-hm.

Is it rebellious? No.

[Lisa] Do you know,
I think it really fits the brief,

but the texture and the color for me
is quite wishy-washy.

Impeccable, what you've done.
I love the eyebrows,

they're just the right sort of fresh.

Ding dong!

I love that use of color.
I love the ochre, I love the pink.

I think that eye, when I see that
close up, that is so well executed.

I love it.

-Oh, my God.
-The thing I don't like...

-is that shiny forehead.
-Okay, yeah.

You haven't thought of how
it's gonna photograph.

How do you feel knowing that they're
upstairs deciding how you've done?

I just wanna know their thoughts on it,
especially, um, Val's because, like...

Val's opinion's very close to my heart.

[Val] Paige, perfectly executed.

I love it.

Tick. Well done.

[Stacey] Aww, Paige.

Sorry! [laughs]

Come on, you can do this.

-Shake it. Breathe.
-[gasps]

Okay.

Why are you so upset?

It's just, like, uh... everyone's opinion
really matters to me, but,

Val, because she's
one of my biggest idols, it's like...

[sighs] This is why I wanna be in
and I've literally worked so hard,

and I've been knocked down
so much, and it's...

[sniffles]

I come from an African background,
and we don't see, really,

anything creative as a real job, so, yeah.
[sighs]

This is all very overwhelming.

Do you feel you've done
the best you can for this look?

Yeah. 100 percent.

I think that the actual look, I think,
really fits in with the editorial story.

A little bit more to the lips and I think
you're there. So well done Paige.

-Thank you so much. Thank you.
-Well done.

Leigh, for me, this works from a distance,
so I would like this on a catwalk,

it doesn't work in this lighting
for editorial.

But that's a really interesting take
on the idea of... of rebellion.

[Lisa] Nikki, I do like the way
that you've used the product,

but, maybe you could've gone
a little bit stronger.

It's actually really interesting.
Looks like she's been whipped.

-[Val] I love the snogged lip.
-Thank you.

-I love a snogged lip.
-Thank you so much.

I think you could've pushed it further.

It's just a little bit nice.

Steph, I've got freckles,
I've got texture,

different colors going on the eyes,

and there's too much highlight
on the forehead.

Brows haven't even been looked at.

[Dominic] There is a lot of ideas.
And I feel like,

because you spent so much time
on all those ideas,

you forgot, actually, some basics.

[Val] Mathieu, I can see the rebellion,

um, I'm getting that,

but I think there's too much going on.

I think the brows,
they look like Granddad's brows.

[Val] Tiffany,
beautiful execution of the shape.

It does feel rebellious.

Having said that, I can still see some
little spots there on her chin.

-[whispers] Oh, no.
-Yeah.

[Dominic] Be mindful of your symmetry.

There is a definite difference
between one side and the other.

Work on the side that is not
natural to you first.

'Cause that will make doing your natural
side far easier to find that symmetry.

Last to see the judges, Brandon.

[Lisa] Skin is a bit overdone on the glow.

But, for me, I like the eye
and I like the color.

My first thought is, where's the beauty?

'Cause I can't see any rebellion there.

I see a very nice smoky eye that's wet.

Really think about the end result
of what you're trying to say.

'Cause I think in this instance,
it's telling me

she's just run ten K
and she should've only run five.

Yeah.

Critiques over,

it's now up to the judges to decide whose
look will feature in the magazine.

I think we've got three

-really strong contenders.
-Really strong looks. Okay.

[Val] It is going to be quite difficult,

'cause they've all got something to say,
they've all got a story to tell.

And they're all technically different.

Mm-hm.

All right, gang, come on over, please.

My beautiful judges.

What's the story, what's the news?

We've been upstairs looking
through the test shots.

A few of you really stood out for me.

But one in particular.

That look was strong, it was tough,
and it really fit with my editorial style.

The look that I would like
to take for my shoot

was created by...

Paige.

[cheering]

No!

No! What the...

No!

[Stacey] Paige, come here.

[laughs] Come on!

-Just...
-Someone pinch me, literally.

Ugh, I probably need to lay down. Okay.

My stuff is gonna be in a magazine.

[cheering and laughter]

No, no! [laughs]

Oh, my... Imagine what my mum's gonna say.

-[laughter]
-Like, no...

The hard work starts now, Paige,
with our shoot upstairs.

What? Wait, what?

Nail your shoot, do your thing,
stay humble, work hard,

-and be on time tomorrow morning.
-Hundred percent.

[laughter]

-Well done, darling, we're proud.
-Oh!

-Make sure it's all even on the lids.
-Mm.

-Brush up the brows, please.
-Yeah.

This is the proudest moment in my life
and I've achieved this before I was 21.

I feel like Beyoncé
in the groove right now.

As the MUA hopefuls
arrive for today's brief,

the judges are in the studio deciding
which two least impressed yesterday.

Belinda, this didn't fit my brief.

I wanted a really rebellious makeup look,
and, for me, this was very soft.

She needs to go a lot further,
she needs to push herself.

[Lisa] It's a real shame
about Brandon's look.

He went too far.

It's more like an oil slick.

But babes looks like she's just run
for the bus. She needs to do that.

-Yeah.
-No one likes a sweaty upper lip.

-One of the others was Steph.
-Yeah.

[Lisa] She created a very playful look
with baby colors,

and that is completely the opposite
to what I wanted on my shoot.

[Val] It's not rebellion, is it?

The judges are now ready to see you.

I'm gonna take you through
to the other room.

You need to find the chair with your name
on it and get yourselves settled.

Come on, then.

A decision has been made.

Okay, so find your chair, guys.

Nice and quickly.

If the MUA's name is on one
of the two red chairs,

they will go head to head

in an elimination Face Off
at the end of the day.

Phew!

-[sighs]
-[Dina] Shit.

[whispers] I'm so surprised about that.

I've got goose bumps.

There's only one way
to escape the red chairs.

Knock the judges' socks off in the next
brief and hope another MUA underachieves.

[whispers] I was so sure it was me.

As you can see, Brandon, Steph,
you are in the Face Off chairs today.

But if you do enough, you can work
your way out of that space.

Today's creative brief is...
what is beauty to you?

Please don't bring anything bland, okay?

This is an opportunity for you to really
take the idea of something conceptual,

but don't bring anything
too literal, okay?

So, bring in the models.

The MUAs have been allowed
to prepare for this brief,

and each has been supplied
with a model to suit their look.

You have two and a half hours.

Your time starts now.

-Let's do this, babycakes.
-[laughs]

To me, beauty isn't about beauty
on a woman, makeup on a woman.

I think it's about, like,
the world that we live in.

Dina's concept is all about the beauty
that is rapidly disappearing

from our environment.

I'm gonna have a breathing...
nurse's mask onto her mouth,

and it's gonna be as if she's
protecting herself from the pollution.

Like Dina, Belinda's concept has
nothing to do with looks.

She finds beauty in the simple act
of giving.

When I think of, like, the hardest times
in my life or the best times in my life,

when people give you flowers,
like, that's such a beautiful thing,

so I wanted to capture that feeling.

I'm gonna do, like,
a bouquet on the chest.

[Ellis] In my house,
my roof is like glass,

so every single morning,
I see the sunrise,

every single night, I see the sunset.

I think it's beautiful.

So, I'm kind of creating
this queen of the night kind of...

sunset... thing?

For his sunset inspired idea of beauty,

Ellis will be using deep
oranges and purples.

Plus a whole heap of added extras.

I'm really gonna work the glitters
and pigments and crystals

and glosses to really create this,
like, textured, layered kind of...

image across her skin.

Is Ellis putting a... like, a glue stick
on his eyebrows?

-[Dominic] Yeah.
-What will that do?

It sticks the hair back to the skin,

and then you can just keep
applying it and applying it,

until you get a lovely smooth finish,
so it looks like skin.

So you're blocking out the brows,
so you can draw them somewhere else.

-What brow?
-What brow?

-Can't see.
-Where'd it go?

-That's great.
-Yeah.

That's such a good tip.

Also working with glue is Paige.

For her African-inspired look, she's also
using prosthetics for the very first time.

Ever.

I'm trying to create
the illusion of stretched earlobes,

because some cultures in Africa
actually stretch their ears.

It represents beauty.

Even though she won yesterday's brief,

Paige can still be sucked
into the Face Off

if she comes unstuck today.

Ohh! I've never used this
before in my life, so...

let's pray.

Please stick.

Please.

-Do you think Steph's story is Glasto?
-No idea.

I think it's something about nature.

It looks like she's using
a type of... clay?

It looks like fuller's earth,
but visually it looks like product poo.

[all laughing]

She could come and do
some wallpapering for me.

[laughs]

I think she can do the garden as well!

I'm doing a look based on my dad.

He's got this very still idea
that makeup is put on with, like, trowels

and it's cracking, the foundation's just...
it's really thick.

Steph needs her colorful cracked look
to impress the judges enough

to get her out of the Face Off chair.

Okay, so right now with the eyes,
I'm just adding a metallic pigment

just to really add some depth.

The concept for my look is 1920s beauty,
and give it a modern twist.

As Brandon is in a Face Off chair too,

his 1920s inspired look is also
under extra scrutiny from the judges.

He's doing him on her.

-[Lisa] Yeah.
-[Val] It's... It's YouTuber.

-[Dominic] But it's his idea of beauty.
...And this is what he does best.

But... he's presenting
his idea of beauty,

I just hope he's prepared
to get the critique.

Oh, my God, it's not fixed again,
it's not sticking at all, it's...

Press it harder and see...

No. Um... no.

Okay, I'm not gonna waste my time
anymore on this.

I need to move on to my look
or else I won't have a look.

MUAs, an hour has passed.

You have 90 minutes left.

For the brief, I'm gonna create a look
that is an illusion makeup.

Building blocks, it symbolizes growth,
'cause beauty to me is development.

My only concern right now is time.

I've practiced this,
and it took me four and a half hours.

I think there could be something
very interesting going on here.

I'm going for over the top makeup.

Like, she is wearing too much makeup,
uh, kind of a Botox makeup.

Special effects makeup fan Mathieu

is using prosthetic lips
and face lifting tape

for his tale about the risks
of chasing beauty.

[Val]
It could be something quite exciting.

I'm creating the scars at the moment.

And what I'm putting on top of the skin
is Rigid Collodion.

I don't know what it is,
because it's the first time using it.

So you can see slowly, like,
the skin's tightening,

and it's creating scars how
I want it to be, so...

[Leigh] Roman goddess of beauty was Venus,

so rather than
just looking to do a goddess,

I wanted to try and take some inspiration
from the planet,

because I think the fiery lava
surface of the planet is almost, like...

the beauty's underneath.

The concept behind my look is kintsugi,
it's a Japanese saying.

Basically it's where pottery is mended
with either gold or silver,

and it makes it more valuable,

it's seen as more beautiful having
been broken in the first place.

So I thought that was a really, like,
strong sort of concept for my look, yeah.

-Hi, girl.
-Hiya.

-How are you feeling?
-Um...

-I'm okay. I'm okay, I think.
-Yeah?

You were absolutely certain that you were
gonna be in one of the chairs.

A hundred percent.
A hundred percent. I think I was...

I was so, like, I'd accepted it
that I was, like, so shocked.

And what's the theme, what we going for?

So the flowers I've used are, like,

-my mum's favorite flowers.
-Stop.

-Oh, how lovely, that's so lovely.
-Yeah, I think...

She taught me what beauty is,
so I wanted to bring it into the look.

-She knows what you're doing?
-No, so, I actually lost my mum.

-When was that?
-Uh, I was 11 years old.

-Sorry.
-Oh girl, please don't cry.

-I was 11 years old.
-Oh...

So I think that's why, like,
this means so much to me.

It's totally understandable.
Hundred percent.

-You've gotta start believing in yourself.
-Yeah, thank you.

Because there's no reason for you to be
rushing down to the front

-thinking "Oh, I'm in this chair."
-Yeah?

-Yeah?
-Yeah, thank you.

-Sorry...
-[laughs]

Aww.

-Smash it, yeah? Thank you.
-Thank you.

MUAs, you have one hour remaining.

-Come on!
-Get a move on.

[groans]

Ooh, girl, he be likin' that product.

Let's start getting the stones on you now.

-He's doing paint by numbers.
-He's doing Kardashian.

Mm.

I'm never getting Botox.

No, yeah.

[chuckles]

That's why these ladies can't even talk.

Yeah.

[gasps] Aaah!

Here we go.

[Ellis] Close your eye for me.

Open your eye.

I feel like I might cry a bit,

just because it's probably not gonna
finish to what I want it to look like.

I have a breakthrough! Oh, yes.

No, it's splitting. Okay, maybe not.

MUAs, you have 25 minutes left.

-[Stacey] So this is Nikki's model.
-[Dominic] Mm.

She's panicking she hasn't got
enough time. Does it look complete to you?

I can tell you why she
hasn't got enough time.

She was using the tiniest little brush
to paint the shadow.

She needed a bigger brush to go
in and just block and brush.

Beautiful.

Okay, done. I don't want to do any more.

MUAs, you have two minutes.

-Two minutes, wow.
-Whoa.

I don't really think
I've got anything left to do.

Oh, I do. I have a lash to add.

MUAs, you have 30 seconds left.

Your time is up. Down brushes.

-Do...
-It's coming off.

[groans]

Guys, stop what you're doing,
the judges have spoken.

-Yes!
-High five.

Pop your models in the room next door to
be photographed, and the best of luck.

Steph, please step forward.

Hello, there.

My dad, his idea of beauty,
of the kind of thick makeup,

the troweled look,

that's cracking under the sheer amount
of product that you've used,

has just been something that's been so
vivid in my mind for so many years,

so, um, I just wanted to portray that.

I love the rainbow hippy-dippy vibe to it.

But on clay?

-Doesn't work for me.
-Okay.

For me, there is something
terribly exciting in there.

-Wow.
-I love the texture,

I love the fact that you've gone,

"Whoa!" over there,
that really excites me.

Nikki.

As a piece of optical makeup, it works.

My issue was you were using

-the tiny, tiniest little brush.
-Mm!

-Yeah.
-You're better off with a bigger brush,

that way you can spend more time
on the other things that were rushed.

-Yeah.
-Leigh.

[Lisa] I think this is art.

You're a brilliant illustrator and
that really comes out in this picture.

-Thank you so much.
-You got the eye on so fast,

I was like "Oh, my God".

I kinda love it.

-Thank God.
-[Dominic laughs]

Thank you.

[Val] Belinda.

I really like it. I think it's poetic,
I think it's well executed.

And for me,
not every story has to be dramatic.

[Belinda] Mm-hm.

[Val] Paige.

I've got six words for you.

Winged it, nailed it, catwalk clever!

[laughter]

Winged it? I would say you fluked it.

You've got a product which
you'd never used before,

and you thought "Oh, yeah, why not?
I'll just try it out."

-[laughing]
-And this is what you end up with.

You nailed it.

I'm really, really impressed.

-Thank you.
-Really impressed.

-Dina.
-So to me, beauty isn't about makeup,

it's about the world that we live in
and how we take it for granted.

And there's a lot of pollution

and I've kind of put, like, a mask over
her that maybe a nurse would wear

to kind of protect herself.

I get your concept and I get
the environmental message,

but this is where we were asking about
being conceptual and being literal.

For me this is a literal,
she can't breathe, there's pollution.

-I'm sorry.
-No, that's fine.

I think it's very pretty.

There's lots going on, you've got flowers,

we've got leaves drawn on the forehead,
we've got a nice little pink eye,

we've got freckles, then we've got
the mask, and we've got the ocean,

and I'm so bored.

Sorry, but I'm so bored.

Um... It just doesn't inspire me.

Ellis.

She went from YouTube Kardashian

into Avatar.

And that's when I started
to get really excited.

There was this incredible eye with the red
and the yellow and the orange, then...

And then what happened? [chuckles]

Then came the sequins.

And it went from this incredible,
powerful color story,

to Strictly.

[Doinic] Mathieu.

What we're asking for
is your idea of beauty

and what you've given us
is almost an anti-beauty.

You're almost saying,
"This is what people shouldn't be."

What you've done is brilliant.

-I love all that nasty, nasty lip.

-[laughs]
-I love it.

[Dominic] We've all seen
some nasty lip jobs.

-But this is fun.
-It is.

I would do that for an editorial, I would.

-I'd do that in Dazed and Confused.
-Yeah.

And I would think that, yeah, it's great.

Next.

It was the first makeup
that caught my eye,

and I loved the blue, I loved the white.

But when the lashes went on,
I thought you'd gone too far.

It was so incredible in its starkness,

and that's what made it really modern.

[Dominic] I disagree.

I absolutely love this.

I'm completely obsessed with
that Japanese art as well.

It's all about the blue flowers
and the gold cracks.

That's the beauty.

-Thank you so much.
-Thank you so much.

Brandon.

[Brandon] My concept was 1920s.

I kind of combined that styling
with what I think is beautiful,

and that is the face,
because her face is a canvas

and you can change everything,
no matter what you start with.

This, to me, proves that you're
technically good at makeup.

But this look is too much.

You've said the face is a canvas
and you can do anything on it.

Doesn't mean you
should do everything on it.

The feather lashes, the red brow,
the liner, the highlight, the lip...

it's too much.

You have piled it on,
and I'm not quite sure

if this is enough yet to get
you out of that seat.

-Thank you.
-Thank you.

Thank you, everyone. Make your
way through to the next room.

We're gonna decide which two are
going to be put into the Face Off.

-[whispers] You okay?
-Yeah, absolutely.

So, who do we think is in the danger zone?

I'm wondering if she wants
to win a makeup competition

or whether she just wants
to win a Blue Peter badge.

You are vicious.

I would like to see

how their skill sets work

under extreme pressure.

Yeah.

I think we need to get down
to the nitty-gritty.

-Mm-hm.
-Really focus

-on the technicality of makeup.
-Yeah.

[Stacey] Hi, guys.

-[Leigh] Oh, God.
-[Ellis] Hey.

Okay, so,

as you know, today, Brandon, Steph,

you knew that you had
to impress the judges.

Have you done enough?

[Val] Steph.

You've beat the seat,

-You are safe for next week.
-Amazing. Well done.

That is fantastic. Thank you.

[Val] Dina.

Your look didn't quite come up
to the mark of what we expected,

so, you are going to be our first MUA

that steps in to the Face Off.

Brandon.

Your look was technical,

it just went too far.

Unfortunately, you haven't done enough
to fight yourself out of the Face Off.

Okay, guys, so that means that I'm
gonna be taking through Dina and Brandon.

Judges, thank you so much.

-We'll see you in there.
-[Belinda] Oh, God, I'm gonna cry.

Oh, Ellis, I can't...

Come on, babe...

[sniffling]

Once we leave, one person will be
returning and the other person won't.

I didn't think that I would
be in it with Brandon

'cause I thought his look
was really strong.

I thought that it would
be me against Steph.

Smash it.

-Come on, guys.
-Good luck.

For the Face Off,
so neither MUA has an advantage,

they will make up identical twins.

We've seen your creativity
and your imagination.

Now we want to scrutinize
your skill.

We're gonna be giving you ten minutes
to create a perfect black lip.

This Face Off leaves no room for mistakes.

It's all about symmetry and balance.

We'll also be looking for precision.

We wanna make sure that lip is clean,
crisp and sharp.

If our MUAs are clever,
they will get the color on first,

then you sharpen up your edge

by taking a pencil or an eyeliner

and drawing your lip shape.

I would then take a gloss,

and whack that gloss over the top.

And I think that looks pretty hot.

Guys, you've got ten minutes. Good luck.

And your time starts now.

[Dominic] So what are you thinking?

I really liked the way Dina
approached the lip.

She seemed, like, straight in there.

My worry is Brandon. He was doing
that line and he was shaking so much.

He was shaking.

He's never gonna get a sharp,
crisp line without the precision,

it's not gonna be on point.

60 seconds remaining, guys.

Three,

two, one.

Thank you so much.

Judges, do you wanna
have a quick inspection?

[Val] Absolutely.

-[Val] Can you see what I'm seeing?
-[Dominic] Yeah.

[whispers] Close your mouth.

For me, there's a little bit
of an asymmetry on Dina's lip.

It's a bit, sort of, like that.

Brandon's is good, but there's
just a few too many mistakes.

There is no sharp edge
to one side of his upper lip.

There's pros and cons for both,
isn't there?

Definitely.

But, I think we're in agreement,
don't you?

I think so.

So, judges, have you made your decision?

We have.

Brandon, your Cupid's bow,

it was a little bit fuzzy,
it wasn't precise.

But you did give me a sexy pout.

Dina, your precision was really good
and your speed was great,

but, the balance and the symmetry
was kind of a bit so-so.

Dina...

please pack your kit,
you're going home.

[Dominic] Brandon, that means we'll
be seeing you next week.

Thank you. Thank you so much.

[Stacey] Do you wanna go through, Brandon?

-Really, really, really, really was.
-Really, it was so tough.

-It was so tough.
-So tough.

[laughing]

It wasn't the best start, but I'm kind of
glad it happened in the beginning

because now I think me,
more than anyone, wants it the most,

because I've had that taste
of what it'd be like if I lost it.

It just reminds you that, you know,
you're here, it's a competition

You know what I mean?
Like, there's one contract.

And so, you know, every week
we will lose someone.

[Dina] I'm proud I got this far.

It's a bit rubbish being
the first one to leave,

but we've beat thousands of people
to get on the show already, so...

It is what it is, and... guess I'm
going back to the deli counter.

[laughs]

-Well, it's been a really exciting week.
-Hasn't it?

[Val] I mean, we've seen

-some really interesting looks.
-[Dominic] Yeah.

However... if they think that
this week has been tough...

-Phew. They've got another think comin'.
-Phew.

-Absolutely. Absolutely.
-Just wait. Just wait.
