to investigate
the Church Brew Works

A century-old complex

reported to be one of the
area's most haunted locations

This sounds like a really
interesting case, man

Sean Casey, he's calling us
in, he owns Church Brew Works

I mean, in the 1900s,
it was a church,

and then a school, and now
it's a brewery and a restaurant

He's been hearing about

and they've been getting
reports of activity in this place

for like three decades

All different claims,
sounds of walking,

and dragging sounds coming
from the upper floors, strange voices

And, you know, the female apparition
has been seen in multiple different places

reasons that Sean contacted us,

some of his employees

who are seriously
uncomfortable with being there

So he called us to help him find
out what's really going on there

in the hopes that, you know,
he won't lose some staff

First off, what's the history
of this place?

I can tell it used
to be a church

It was an Irish Catholic
Scottish Church,

it was opened 1902,
closed 1993

And there's a school attached
to the property?

Yeah
So this is actually a complex

In 1907, both the school
and the convent were built

The priests had the rectory
built in 1923

We bought it, early '96

During the church's
extensive renovations into a restaurant,

Sean turned
the attached rectory

into a kitchen
and office space

And the basement of the
schoolhouse into a brewery

But many parts of the
20,000 square foot annex

have remained untouched
for decades

When you were taking this over
from the church to turn into a brewery,

was there anything special
that had to be done?

Before we even stepped foot
in the place,

they had come and removed
some religious statues

Since then, there is more
of a vibe of emptiness

I know that you were talking
about having activity for years

Tell me about the kind of, the
stuff that's been going on here

Employees, maybe for a decade,
I've been aware of things,

our brewer, Matt, actually
had encounters with a girl

- Oh, the lady. The lady in white?
- Yes

The first time I saw her,
I was going up to the office

and as I was walking up the
steps, I saw the girl standing there

She appeared to be in her late
teens or early 20s,

wearing a white dress,
she ran up in front of me

and at the top of the steps she
backed into a dark storage room

Flipped on the light and
she was nowhere to be found

One evening, the apparition
was on the altar

And so, I kind of hustled
over there

and the door to the back of the
schoolhouse was swinging shut

She was nowhere to be found

A different time, I was coming out of
the kitchen into the dining room area,

five feet in front of me,
she was standing there,

and then after a few seconds,
she disappeared in front of me

Gives me chills to this day

I still can't wrap my head
around it

You also have a cook, Wes,
right, who's had experiences?

Wes,
actually calls his thing Bob

Bob is like a trickster

He likes to throw stuff
around

He likes to tug my jacket

Down in the basement
of the kitchen here

tends to have a darker
presence in it

One time I saw what seemed
to be a solid mass in front of me

I literally could hear it
making footsteps

as it was something
that was not natural

Paranormal activity
in the rectory

can also be found on the upper
floor, which is now office space

As I was working,

I noticed the chair directly across
from my desk started to move

It just came to a dead stop

I was scared to death

People you're gonna talk to,
they all say the same thing,

they feel there's a presence
in the school

A lot of the brewers
will be working alone,

they're the ones
that are more apt

to hear giggling, voices,
laughs or rattling

Sometimes they say
they put things down

and they turn around
and they're gone

I was walking through
the schoolhouse,

just doing my rounds,

and I felt a presence of
something that I could not explain

Just kind of got chills

And the church employees
have reported phantom music

from a non-working organ

Disembodied voices and
strange sounds have also occurred

Another incident,
I heard voices

I looked over and that's
when I heard a bang...

right next to me

From that point on, I heard a
knock on every table as I passed by

I know you've talked
about being a skeptic

and now that sort of
has changed,

and you're not really
a skeptic anymore, correct?

Yeah. Well, I have
an engineering degree

So I'm wired like an engineer
sort of like has to be black and white

but I think we're definitely
in a gray area here

Have you experienced anything
yourself being here through the years?

So I actually unplugged
this unit in the brewery,

came back the next day,
thing was plugged back in

I immediately
called the brewer

and I was like, "Hey, did you
turn this thing back on?"

And he was like, "No."

He goes, "But that's
where the ghost hangs out."

At that point,
I got goose bumps

and that's what led to me
emailing you guys at 1:33 at night

- Yep
- What are you hoping that we're able to accomplish

for you
and your employees here?

Some of the people are
probably a little more freaked out

about what's happened

Something's going on here,
man. This isn't normal

So it's about bringing peace
to people and...

Yeah, so maybe that will sort of help
other people be a little more comfortable

amount of equipment in here

We're gonna have cameras
everywhere

and we're gonna investigate
this place heavily for many days

And we'll find a lot of that history
that you've been trying to get,

When it comes down to a
church, it's such a spiritual place

They tend to have some sort
of paranormal activity

These are very important
places to people as they're living

and a lot of times they retreat
to them after they've passed

The DVR camera
and the thermal camera

getting the first floor

In this spot, the gentleman
heard the knocking

They've seen the female apparition
so it's all completely covered

was working one night

and she heard a noise
and looked back

and the chair that was in back of
her moved a couple feet to the right

the apparition of the girl, voices,

And then we ran wireless cameras

total of about 10 to 12 cameras

and then she just disappeared,

So it seems like she's always
appearing in front of the same guy

and then looking at him
and then kind of walking away

- And she acknowledges him. So she's intelligent

The community is very old

It dates back to 1814

What was here before
this church?

At the time
of the American Civil War,

this would have been
Iron City Park

and it was nothing
more than some farmland

Do you know of any deaths,

especially young women or young
girls that happened on this property?

- On this exact spot, no
- Okay

But there is a girl
that is affiliated

with Saint John, the Baptist
Roman Catholic Church

- Okay
- And her name was Marcella Helena Day

We do see that Marcella Day
shows up as a student

here at Saint John,
The Baptist School

And she was an active member
of this church

Her death took place
on October 19th, 1918

And if you look at this obituary,
she died from pneumonia

And poor Marcella
is only 18 years of age

Oh, my God

She was so young, I can't
imagine how scary that was for her

It all corresponds with
the great Spanish influenza

- And the influenza, when it morphs,

actually morphs into a bacterial
pneumonia, which is extremely deadly

How sad

Being that she was active
in this church,

would you assume that her
funeral would be held here?

- Most likely, it was

We didn't hear it
with our ears,

it only came through

We've captured
intriguing evidence so far

but need to still figure out
who's behind the activity

Our historian led us to a
church member, Marcella Day,

who passed away
during the 1918 flu pandemic

but we've yet to get
any response from her

Steve and I are doing further
research on Iron City Park,

the area on which the church
complex was built,

to see if we can find
a new lead

I've come across
an article here...

that says that a woman
named Maria Houston

was killed by her husband,
Sergeant Michael Houston,

and it says here that
he shot her in 1864

in an accidental shooting

- Oh, yeah, he was drunk, huh?

But she was murdered, whether
he was charged for it or not

So that's where
the church stands now

It was a park at the time

So we have at least one
confirmed death on the property

And that gives us a name that
we can at least work with tonight

who was murdered
on the property

and keep trying to make
contact with Marcella Day,

who passed away
from the Spanish flu,

to see if either connects us to a
female voice and apparition seen here

I think that could be
a layered haunting,

where there are some residual
things from when it was the church,

like the footsteps
we captured in the school

One thing that's interesting
is our GS2 laser grid

was only interacting with us
when we brought up Catholicism,

which shows signs of an
intelligent haunting as well

So we have to take that
into consideration

about the possible girl in white

There's a lady
named Marcella Day

and in 1918, she actually

those experiences

because it helps back up
a lot of the claims

that some of your employees
have had

Yeah, and honestly, there's a common
refrain of steps on that second floor

And there's people
that simply won't go up there

We'll play that female voice
that happened really quick

while we're on the main floor
of the schoolhouse building

We think she's saying,

And then
when we were in the church,

we caught a voice that sounded
like it may have said a certain word

Yep. Yeah, it says, "Jesus."

Yeah, that's pretty weird,
man

At one point, Tango and I, we
made our way all the way upstairs

to what we think is a
children's playhouse of sorts

And we had what we call
a GS2 laser grid

It's a laser grid that will
show you anything with mass

that moves in front of it, the
temperature and everything

And while we had that set up,

we noticed a significant temperature
drop right in front of that device

You know, we've definitely had
our brewers talk about walking,

having temperature changes,
it's consistent, for sure

And then all of a sudden,
while we're investigating,

we're doing some call
and response

but we heard a whistle, like
something trying to get our attention,

then we heard a loud crashing or
bang sound and then I heard a voice

And we'd like to play
that for you

Oh, yeah

I mean, it almost sounds
like someone calling

It can totally be like, "Hey."

You know, that attic
proved to be pretty intense

Yeah, that was the old,
that was the stage

where they did lots
of performances

and it was also
far in the cafeteria

So I mean, that had heavy,
heavy traffic

There seems to be
a layered haunting

You may have different phenomena
happening from different eras of time

and intelligent stuff
happening

But I don't think anybody
has any reasons to be fearful

With this particular haunting,

it seems that it's of the
living environment,

people that were once alive
who are now passed so...

- Who have a connection to this property
- Yeah

It could be
a loving connection,

it doesn't have
to be something scary

- That's gonna be a comfort for some people for sure
- Yeah
