Face to Face (2019–…): Season 1, Episode 8 - Episode #1.8 - full transcript

FACE TO FACE

Copenhagen, Frank's house

- Bjørn. What are you doing here?
- Christina's lip frenum was torn.

- What?
- Why didn't you put it in your report?

Bjørn, for Christ's sake.
I'm sorry about your ordeal, but...

We can't talk about it now. Go home
and get some sleep. I don't have time.

It'll only take five minutes. Move.

- The lip frenum.
- First there's this and then that.

Then you put Rylander into a coma, and
now you go on about a torn lip frenum.

I can't help you,
and I'm expecting guests soon.

- Is that your daughter?
- Yes.

- Is that her go-kart?
- Yes.

Don't they cost a bundle in maintenance?

Expensive car.
Big house.

Since when did you earn that much?

- I'm not the only breadwinner here.
- No...

So it's all in your wife's name?

What a fancy gold watch.

Was that a wedding gift
from sweet... what's her name?

Cecilie.

There she is.

- Does she know you're fucking Susanne?
- So that's what this is all about?

I refuse to answer that.

You didn't think to tell me
you were fucking my wife?

Your ex-wife, and no.

You don't feel unfit for this case?

I didn't know it was Christina when
I performed the autopsy this morning.

Okay, so let's say
you're both competent and fit.

Then I ask for your assessment of this.

What is your professional opinion
of this?

- Your fit and very competent opinion?
- A torn lip frenum.

What else can you conclude?

The twist angle, pattern of movement,
interpersonal contact.

- Christina didn't commit suicide.
- I can't say without further examination.

- And you didn't perform that?
- Yes! We look at the lip frenum first.

- Exactly. Why do you check that first?
- Because it may indicate a crime.

Or it could be an accidental fall or a
self-induced blow. The options are many.

- But none are irrelevant.
- No, of course not.

So why didn't you make any mention
of the lip frenum in your report?!

This morning you went on about twist
wounds, and they were in the report -

- so what do you want me to say,
specifically?

What can tear a lip frenum, Frank?
For example?

Well?
For example?

Frank speaking. Hi.

No, that's right.
Yes, as soon as possible.

No, thanks for calling.
Just go ahead.

Great, bye.

- Who supervised the autopsy report?
- I did.

- You?
- I have seniority. Standard procedure.

So nobody checked
if you made mistakes?

The lip frenum wasn't mentioned
because nothing was wrong with it.

Something is wrong with it!
Look at the goddamn picture!

I can't give you a serious assessment
from my kitchen.

- So let's go ...
- No goddamn way!

I have to stick to procedure. I can't
open doors in the middle of the night.

- Let's talk to Richard about this.
- And tell him what?

- That you omitted the lip frenum.
- I didn't omit anything.

This case will be reopened.
Either you're totally incompetent -

- or totally involved!

Okay, okay...

Calling Richard won't help you, because
he asked me to omit the lip frenum.

- Richard would never do that.
- Yes. He did it for your sake.

To protect you, Bjørn.
Because he's your friend.

He saw the state you're in
and just wanted to shut the case.

You're mentally unhinged.
And he was right. Look at you.

- So you just omitted it?
- No, I didn't just. It doesn't matter.

Ask any other pathologist.
Every observation indicates suicide.

A lip frenum can be torn from
hitting a table or a fall. Like this!

When did Richard ask you to do it?

This morning,
after he read the preliminary report.

When I came,
you knew she was my daughter?

Afterwards.
After you left, he got the report.

Then why didn't you mention the lip...

Because it doesn't bear down
on the case.

Hello, Richard.

Yes.

No, he's here.
He's right here with me.

Good. Bye.

Richard is on his way, right?

When he comes, start talking to him
about the autopsy report.

- No.
- Yes. You're afraid of getting caught.

I'll hide in here. Tell him I left,
but I'll be right in here.

- You're paranoid! He did it for you.
- Manipulating a report is inexcusable!

- What do you think happened?
- Richard knew all about Blacknet.

- What?
- Blacknet.

Christina was involved in online crime.
She made tons of money.

When she wanted out, people wouldn't
let her, so she was desperate -

- and turned over the whole thing to
some sick fuck. That made her a hazard.

- When did all this happen?
- Richard is the chief of police.

He has people on both sides.
He monitored her and leaned on her.

He had all the cards including you.
You could erase any leads.

- Bjørn, you're not making sense.
- He kept her in the system.

Cut it out.
Why would Richard kill her?

Because she wanted out.
He was afraid she'd come to me.

He was afraid she'd come to me.

It's a possibility, isn't it?
It is a possibility, isn't it, Frank?

Bjørn, I'm a pathologist...

- Hi, Richard.
- Where's Frank?

- We need to talk.
- You bet we do.

Where is he, Bjørn?
Where is Frank?

- Sit down.
- I'm here.

- Would you like a glass of wine?
- No.

- What's going on?
- That autopsy report on Christina...

- Yes?
- It's pathetic.

Why didn't you get a second opinion
like you promised me?

It's been a long day, and I'm beat.
I admit I might have made mistakes.

I'm sorry, but I...

I can't handle another theory. I can't.

You told Frank to omit any mention
of the lip frenum. Why?

I don't know what you're on about.
This ends here. You're going home.

You kept Christina in Blacknet.
You extorted a fortune out of her.

- Lassen and Rylander are in on it.
- Watch it.

- Your goodwill is running out.
- Where were you last night?

I'm here as your friend.
I'm looking out for you.

- If I let go, you're alone.
- Where were you last night?

- Where were you last night?
- At a fucking management conference!

Check it out.
The pictures are already online.

Did you find it?
See? They're all there.

Do you know what you're saying to me?
You think I'm involved in all this?

Are you accusing me
of killing your daughter -

- but your theory falls flat because
I have an alibi? Listen to yourself!

You're sick. You need help.

That's why I'm here.
We're going home now.

If you were at a conference, and Lassen
and Rylander were at the station -

- then... there aren't
that many people...

Why didn't you double-check Christina
like you promised?

Stop it. It's not our case.
It's out of our hands, you know that.

There is no answer to your theory.

- You made Frank omit the lip frenum.
- There's no problem with that frenum.

- What the fuck are you talking about?
- Maybe you tore the lip frenum.

- Did you lie to me?
- Yes, I fibbed.

- Why?
- Because you threatened me.

You just put a colleague in a coma.
You scared the shit out of me.

Did you instigate a search?

Whose case is it? I know her.

Send her over here with a status.
Thanks.

A Mia Fønsgaard has been stabbed
in her apartment.

Does that ring a bell?

I sure as hell hope you aren't involved.

Because then you're in deep trouble.

I'm going out to get a status report.
Frank, is it okay if he stays here?

About Susanne... I'm sorry.

It's a mess...

What's that?

- What?
- Do you arrange spoons in a pattern?

Yes.

Is it some sort of compulsion?

- It's nothing to be embarrassed about.
- Do I seem embarrassed?

- What are you doing?
- What if I could connect all the dots?

A last shot in the 11th hour. Wouldn't
that interest a competent pro like you?

Put the knife down.

They're picking me up soon.
You have the entire system behind you.

My boss, my colleagues, my ex-wife.

I'm the lunatic.
Everybody knows that.

This is just to amuse the two of us.
Nobody listens to me anyway.

I know you were fucking Susanne
when Christina died.

- But what if you weren't?
- Bjørn, stop this.

You set down the time of death
in the autopsy report, right?

So Christina could've died another time.

A time better suited to your alibi.

- You really are sick.
- I know. Everybody says so.

But the window is there.
You have to give me that.

All you had to do was to put down a time
when you were fucking my ex.

But it only takes 10 minutes
to drive from Susanne to Christina's.

Listen to yourself.
Before it was Richard, now I did it.

I told you
that I never met Christina before.

I'm just theorizing here.

Okay, Susanne's asleep.

You hurry back
and later write another time of death.

It's possible in theory, right, Frank?

Bjørn, put the knife down.

You met Christina last Christmas
when you were fucking Susanne.

I was supposed to be with Christina
for a father-daughter evening.

The problem was me. I couldn't.
Too many things to be said.

So I went to work instead.
What a shitty dad, right?

A shitty dad.
I missed at least ten of her messages.

Susanne found her the next day on
the kitchen floor, helpless, delirious.

She didn't miss the opportunity to
document my neglect. Not a pretty sight.

But... that sweater.
Did you put that under her head?

It's not Christina's
and it's not Susanne's.

It's a Lacoste.

Your brand, right?

- What has that got to do with me?
- You were there. Susanne told me.

But stick with me.
You've done the deed, Susanne's asleep.

You're going home
to your rich, frigid wife -

- and in the hall on Christmas Eve,
you meet Christina for the first time.

My beautiful, young girl.

She's overexcited and drunk and she talks.
What do you think she talks about?

- Dunno. What could she talk about?
- About Blacknet.

About a huge cash flow that would make
any guy sponging on his wife horny.

You listen and pour booze on her
until you know exactly what you need.

Then you start blackmailing
the little girl, and when she complains -

- you call your thugs, Rylander, Lassen,
two dirty cops.

So the scheme continues,
and the money pours in.

But then Christina wants out.
She can't stand the pressure.

But you've grown accustomed
to the high life -

- so you get Rylander to smack Christina
around, so she ends up at Mia's.

She shapes up, but a week later
she acts up again.

So you send Lassen and Rylander
to Sebastian, but it's too late.

Christina has turned Blacknet over
to someone else. She's dropped off.

You take the new guy, Holger Lang,
downtown, bust him for DUI -

- and strike a deal with him, and then
you're ready to live happily ever after.

But you were worried about what
Christina's new freedom might lead to.

If she could blab on Christmas Eve
to you, she could blab to anyone.

And that takes us back to Amaliegade.

Susanne is sleeping off her orgasm,
and you're there in the kitchen -

- nervous, fiddling with some lollipops,
arranging them into an OCD pattern.

Killing somebody isn't easy after all,
but you have to shut down Christina.

Then things can carry on,
so you do it.

- You stab her in the heart...
- Open the door!

- Bjørn, put down the knife.
- Richard...

Reopen the case.
Christina didn't commit suicide.

Calm down, okay?
Put the knife down.

We'll reopen the case. Sure.

- Put it down.
- Call the morgue now.

Tell them to reexamine her
and to make a new autopsy report.

Okay? Now.
Call them on speakerphone.

- Thomas speaking.
- This is Richard Meyer.

Reexamine Christina Rasmussen,
the young girl from last night.

Okay, let me just check her file.

That's gonna be a problem.
She's due for cremation.

Now.
She's burning as we speak.

He hasn't got a clue. Calm down.

We'll work this out. Calm down.

Bjørn!

I got you.

I got you.

Thank you, Dad.

It's over now.
