Catfish: The TV Show (2012–…): Season 4, Episode 7 - Stephanie & David - full transcript

After Stephanie's parents' divorce, she began to question whether she could ever trust a man in a relationship. But then she met David online and immediately developed a deep bond with him.

[MUSIC PLAYING]

Feel OK?

All right, come on.

This is it.

Good?

STEPHANIE: Cool.

Thumbs up?

Hello.

We're looking for Dave.

Oh my God, this is so weird.

NEV: It looks like he's
looking for an out.

Time code.

There we go.

What have we got?

NEV: I have 1,200 unread emails.

Here's one from Stephanie.

"I was watching your movie,
and I can somewhat relate.

There's this guy named
David I've been talking

to you for seven months.

He's a cool guy and over
the last few months,

I have begun to really like him.

My parents got
divorced recently,

and he's been helping
me deal with it.

He's the only person
I can talk to.

David and I both
live in the LA area.

I have been trying to meet up
with him, but he makes excuses.

Now I'm starting to worry.

I feel like maybe I've been
lied to this whole time.

I have been lied to by men
in my past relationships,

and therefore I
have trust issues.

Then again, maybe I'm wrong
and David has been truthful

this whole time, and if
so, I need to stop thinking

that every guy is the same."

I like this story because
she's calling men out.

Am I ever going to meet a
guy that treats me right?

Yeah.

All right, let's
give this a shot.

Hi.

Hello.

How are you doing, Stephanie?

I'm doing pretty awesome.

NEV: So I got your email.

We're very interested
in your story.

So I kind of just want
to know more about it.

OK, well, I met
David on Facebook.

He contacted me.

From there it just started
progressing, I guess.

Since my parents got divorced,
he was the the only guy

that I really am close to
and opened up my feelings

and tell him exactly how I feel.

It just makes me feel so
happy and grateful that I've

met someone.

Do you guys talk on the phone?

Do you Skype?

We don't ever Skype.

I would try asking, but the
subject just gets changed.

NEV: If you had to
guess what's going

on with David and this
whole relationship,

what's your gut telling you?

STEPHANIE: I don't know.

I just feel like
he's not telling

the truth about something.

I want to be wrong,
because I really like him.

If you were to be my side
and help me with this,

I honestly would be so thankful.

All right, well, great.

So I think we're all
on the same page.

Let's definitely do this.

OK, it was really
nice seeing you.

NEV: All right.

Bye, Stephanie.

Well, I want to go.

MAX: Yeah.

Let's go to Cali.

Yeah.

I'm excited to get back to LA.

All right, guys.

Going to California.

Yeah, we're going
home, gentlemen.

MALE SINGER: (SINGING)
I hear you calling,

just like hey, hey, hey.

NEV: LA, baby.

MALE SINGER: (SINGING)
Girl I'm on my way.

Girl, I'm on my way.

As much as she
likes this guy Dave,

she's also acutely
aware of the fact

that something
doesn't feel right.

Innocent until proven guilty.

Here we go.

[DOORBELL RINGS]

Hi.

Stephanie, hello.

How are you?

- Good.
- Max.

Hi.
MAX: Hi.

Stephanie.

MAX: You can shake my hand.

OK, cool.

Hi Stephanie.

Assorted strangers.

MAX: This is our crew.

All right, so on a scale
of one to googly eyed,

where would you say you are
with your feelings for David?

What's a googly eye?

Is that a 10?

NEV: Yeah.

OK, I would say
a good solid nine.

NEV: Wow.

Well, because the guys from
my past, it went all bad.

David's not like that.

He gives me advice.

He makes me feel so special.

NEV: And you've
never even met him?

I know.

Crazy, huh?

[LAUGHS] Well, I mean, I
don't love him, because I

don't believe in that.

But I do like him a lot.

You don't believe in alone?

I don't.

NEV: Man, that's sad.

I want to.

So do you not believe
in love or do you believe

that you can't fall in love?

I just believe I
can't fall in love.

I think the main thing
that really messed

me up was my parents' divorce.

That just messed me up bad.

I think my dad
cheated on my mum.

Oh.

But it's just crazy though,
because it's something

you would never
expect from my dad,

because my dad was
always a quiet guy.

And then being married for 42
years, that's just so crazy.

42 years and when we were
little I would see pictures

and we had--

we would eat together,
everything, just play together.

And my dad was doing this,
it just made me realise, wow,

if my dad can do this
and I least expected it,

what makes me think that a guy's
not going to do this to me that

I really care about, you know?

NEV: And you don't want to let
what happened to your mum--

Happen to me.

NEV: Right.

So then that brings
us to this guy.

Why do you think Dave
was able to change

the way you were feeling?

STEPHANIE: He's helped me
like with my parents' divorce.

I just feel like
when I talk to David,

I feel like I escape
from my problems.

NEV: Dave's sort of this like--

STEPHANIE: Kind of
superhero kind of.

If I find out everything
he said was true,

then that's when I
just put my stuff

to the side and
just start realising

that not all guys are the same.

NEV: If it turns out that
some of what Dave has told you

isn't true?

Cut.

I hate liars.

NEV: Let's check them out.

Can't even really see what
it looks like in that photo.

Doesn't say anything about him.

It says gender, male.

NEV: Yeah, he doesn't
put a lot up here.

He's not a big Facebook guy.

He's only got 63 friends.

MAX: Well, he's posting
near Los Angeles.

You guys have talked
about meeting up, right?

STEPHANIE: Yeah, we have.

We would plan it, and then
when the day would come,

he would tell me, oh,
I have to go to work.

They just called me in.

And when he goes to work,
he means Staples Centre?

Mm-hmm.

NEV: Very mysterious.

STEPHANIE: Very.

He seems to know
so much about me,

but it's like, I know
nothing about the guy.

You're worried?

I'm scared to
find out the truth.

NEV: You want to be
in love with this guy.

You want him to love you.

So if it doesn't
work out with David,

you've lost a chance at love.

Exactly.

I'm hopeful.

I think--

I'm just going to stay
positive till we find out.

I want this to
work out for you.

I really do.

I think you deserve it.

OK, cool.

We will report back soon.

STEPHANIE: OK.

Bye.

Wow.

She's been through a lot.

If this doesn't go well, if
she gets burned by this guy,

I don't know how long it's
gonna take before she's

ready or even
interested in trying

to let someone else in again.

We don't have a lot to go on.

No.

Unfortunately.

But we've got a lot of
work to try and find

something on this guy David.

You want to head back to
my place and just dig in?

Welcome.

This is it.

Is that for me to
sit or you to sit?

This is going be good for you.

NEV: All right, so we gotta
figure out who David Miller is.

First thing is a
Google image search.

Whoa.

A lot of hits.

A lot of hits.

A lot of girl blogs saying
that this guy is really hot.

NEV: Hm.

Well here's yummy black boys.

It says source wake and base.

Let's see where that takes us.

Look, look.

Look at the top.

They named me Cayron.

Brooklyn to Jersey.

So he's east coast.

He has a Twitter.

Let's check that out.

OK, so here is Cayron.

MAX: Is that this guy?

NEV: It's hard to tell.

Looks--

MAX: It could be the same guy.

NEV: Wait, look.

Oh yeah, totally.

MAX: It's the same guy.

Same eyes.

NEV: That's the same guy.

MAX: Same goatee.

So David's profile
pic and Cayron

are definitely the same guy.

MAX: Let's see if there
are any more pictures.

Because who Knows
Cayron could be fake.

NEV: Yeah, here he is.

MAX: Yeah.

That's him again.

We've just found a trove
of photos of this guy.

NEV: Why wouldn't
he have sent her

these pictures, whoever he is?

I mean, all we would have
to do is show Stephanie this

and she would flip.

This is bad news.

Oh man, I'm not liking the
way this is going, Max.

It just doesn't--

I don't know.

I don't get it.

Like why?

Why go this far with
the lie and stop?

I don't think there's
anything left to do except.

Let's call him.

All right.

[PHONE RINGING]

Yeah, hey, this is Nev.

Who's this?

Oh, hey David.

I'm a friend of Stephanie's.

I'm sitting here with my
friend Max and a crew from MTV.

Stephanie called us because
she really wants to meet you

and thought that maybe
me and Max could help,

because we're making a
show about online dating

and internet relationships.

Anyway, you know that Stephanie
really likes you, right?

Why do you think you
guys haven't met up yet?

I was hoping that maybe
we could help arrange

for you guys to meet in person.

Does that sound like something
that you'd be down to do?

OK, great.

So when do you think
would be a good time

in the next couple
of days that we

could maybe come and meet you?

On Sunday?

OK, that could work.

All right, Dave, so I
will speak to you soon.

OK, later.

Bye, OK.

I can see what she
really likes about him.

[LAUGHS]

He doesn't have a tremendous
personality on the phone.

MAX: I mean, he's
weirded out, obviously,

because he knows we're
about to call out his lie.

NEV: I mean, you'd think
he'd be like, oh, cool.

You guys are here.
You're going to help us meet up.

I've been meaning to meet her.

I'm excited.

This is great.

And instead it was just like.

MAX: Yeah.

But when we asked her
today, when we said,

hey, what do you know about him?

She knows nothing about him.

Isn't it weird to talk to
someone for seven months

and not press them
to know a little more

about their background?

NEV: It's a little weird.

I'm not sure what
else there is to do

other than call Stephanie,
tell her we've got some news.

God, I hate calling her and not
just telling her right away.

Oh, he just texted me.

MAX: He did?

Yeah.

What did he say?

Uh oh.

MAX: What?

He said, "I just
looked at my schedule.

I don't know when
we can meet up."

So he's-- sounds like he's--

MAX: Did we scare him?

I don't know if we
scared him, but it looks

like he's looking for an out.

You know?

MAX: Yeah, he's baulking.

I actually get to be driving.

I never get to drive.

Never.

Nev's always driving because
he's a driving control freak.

Hello?

Welcome.

OK, so the one thing
that we know for sure

is that David Miller
has stolen the image

of this young man Cayron.

Should we call David
again, see if maybe he'll

reconsider so that
we could potentially

get him to agree to meet up?

I think you've given him
a night to think about it.

Now is the time to give him the
whole last opportunity speech.

That she's either going
to move on with her life

unless you meet her.

All right.

I'll call him.

[PHONE RINGING]

It's

early.

Hello, David?

Hey, man, it's Nev and
Max again from yesterday.

Listen, man, I'm calling
because I was just

curious to see if
anything changed

and if maybe you
thought you might have

some time to meet up with us.

Because Stephanie, she's sort
of said either she meets you

this weekend or maybe
she's sort of totally

stops talking to you.

What do you think?

OK.

I'll figure out with
Stephanie when she's free

and we can make a time and
a place to meet up tomorrow?

All right, man.

We'll see you.

I mean, I'm not any more
confident after that phone

call that he's going to--

MAX: Yeah, we're
going to get a text

in about five minutes being
like, yeah, I don't think so.

That wasn't
particularly reassuring.

Look, she might not want
to go through with it.

I think we should just
be ready for that.

All right.

I think we meet Stephanie.

I'm very curious to see her
reaction to all of this.

MAX: Yeah.

Because she said if he's lying
to me, whatever it is, done,

finished.

MALE SINGER:
(SINGING) My friends

are the stars and the sun.

NEV: Plan is meeting Stephanie.

She's got two best
friends with her.

After this, we're going
to go over everything.

So start things off
a little lighter.

Here we go.

New friends.

- Barbie.
- Barbie.

Hi.

Sonja.

Sonja.

How are you?

Good.

Do you guys know
basically why we're here?

Yes.

NEV: Have you talked to him?

Yeah.

NEV: And what do
you think of him?

I really think
he's a nice guy and I

think it's going to work out.

I mean, why not?

She's a pretty girl and he
seems like he's into her.

You guys are funny.

What's she like when she's
talking to him on the phone?

She's happy.

She's herself.

Usually it's like,
she has trust issues.

She's been hurt before after
the divorce with her parents.

So for her to be able
to open up to this guy,

it's a big deal for her.

My only concern is my
friend getting hurt.

I've seen her at rock bottom.

But I know that she is into him
and she does really like him.

And I've told her,
her time will come.

Maybe it's going to
come soon with David.

I think it's honestly weird
that they've been talking

for like over a
period of six months

and yet she hasn't seen him.

That's kind of weird.

No matter what happens,
we're with her 100%.

That almost made me cry.

I just hope everything's
good news and not bad.

Yeah.

Thank you.

What did you find
out about David?

I just don't want
to disappointed.

NEV: Right.

Well, no one does.

So first thing is
we took this picture

and we did a Google image search
and this is what happened.

So we literally just
clicked on the first one,

Yummy Black Boys, and it
took us to this website.

Eventually we got
to this Tumblr blog.

And he says, they
named me Cayron.

So we just looked
up his Twitter.

This was the Twitter
that took us to.

At this point, we're
starting to think, OK, this

is Cayron, not Dave Miller.

Pretty much been
talking to a stranger.

I mean, it bothers me,
because how I feel,

I feel like I wouldn't
say betrayed kind of,

but I just feel like,
why couldn't you just

send me a picture of yourself?

Whatever his story
is, he definitely

has some explaining to do.

He very sort of timidly
said that we might

be able to meet up tomorrow.

Is that something you
think you're ready to do?

Kind of no and kind of yeah.

NEV: It's a lot to
take in right now.

Why do men have to
be so disappointing?

I'm not justifying this guy
and what he is or isn't doing

or lying and things
that he's saying about,

but a little piece
of this puzzle

is that you were looking
for someone to talk

to and an outlet,
and then you found

this guy who seemed to care.

I think that's
what made me like

him or be so close,
because I can

tell him pretty much anything.

NEV: What do you want to do?

Meet him.

I mean, look, no matter what
happens tomorrow, we're there.

If you get nervous or
upset, we'll be there.

Now I just have
to meet him and hope

that there's no more lies.

JOE GIL: (SINGING) This
ain't the plan I drew.

This ain't the plan I made you.

This is ours to leave.

I've been through
this, and it's scary.

It's hard.

Yeah, I know, it is scary.

It's like you, you have
no words to describe.

Did you have butterflies?

Yeah.

I just want an honest guy.

Stephanie needs us.

It's a big day for her.

Hey, Stephanie.

How you feeling?

I don't know.

So many emotions.

I'm kind of nervous.

Yeah.

I'm ready.
NEV: You're good?

I'm good.

NEV: Then let's do it.

KISHI BASHI: (SINGING) Oh river,
beat the bright out of me.

I've discovered the silhouette
of the face of of me.

Everybody wants a
taste of the light.

STEPHANIE: Kind of scared.

Look how sweaty I am.

NEV: I wouldn't say sweaty.

You're a little--
you're nervous.

Your hands are a little clammy.

Is it this place on the corner?

Can I park right here?

OK.

You ready?

Yeah, I'm ready.

All right.

Feel OK?

All right, come on.

Is it this house right here?

Yeah, I think so.

This is it.

All right, yeah.

Hold on.

Just hang here for
just a second, OK?

You good?

STEPHANIE: Cool.

Thumbs up?

I don't know if I
should smile or cry.

Hello?

Oh my god, this is so weird.

Oh hey man.

Hey.

Nev.

Dawuan?

How you doing?

DAWUAN: Doing all right.

We're looking for Dave.

That's you?

OK.

You want to come
out for a second?

Well, OK, so this is Dawuan.

I asked for Dave, but
I think this is Dave,

or at least that seems to
be the explanation, right?

This is Stephanie.

Just to be totally
clear, obviously

you're not the guy
in the pictures

that we saw, right, on Facebook?

OK.

Obviously, it's a little
bit of a surprise.

Yeah, because you told
me your name was David.

And I'm just like, Dawuan?

Who is Dawuan?

I mean, I was honest with
you for seven months.

Yeah, I feel
what you're saying.

I told you too
that I hate liars.

I wanted to make sure I
was the perfect dude for you.

I don't want to let you
slip away from my life.

My intention was not to
hurt you or lie to you.

I was wanting to wait till the
right time, the right moment

to tell you.

STEPHANIE: Seven months?

Know what I mean?

Yeah, this is now.

And I don't work at the Staples
Centre as a security guard.

I work at a movie theatre.

But this is the real me now.

Liar, right?

Liar?

DAWUAN: Don't get me wrong,
there have been times that I

wanted to tell you so bad.

You're such a liar.

DAWUAN: No, that's the truth.

Dude, we'll be on the phone
sometimes for like a pause,

like a long pause sometimes.

There was your
chance right there.

At least I'm stepping up.

STEPHANIE: What, another guy
disappointing me in my life?

Oh yeah, you're stepping up.

What other lies are
you [BLEEP] telling me?

I'm pretty sure there's
more [BLEEP] lies.

Look, I'm sorry.

I'm just--

Don't touch me.

Sorry just about everything.

It was a big mistake.

OK, well, I hope
you learned from it.

All we gotta do is
try giving me a chance.

Dude, no, you lied.

No, I don't care.

You don't know how big
of a deal this is to me.

You don't.

Right now you
literally disgust me.

So back away or something.

For real.

I'm not trying to be a bitch.

Dawuan, do you mind if I--

I just want to take a second
and talk to Stephanie.

Honestly, I don't
even want to be here.

I mean, I know that feeling.

Oh man.

What did I do?

We always used to
talk on the phone

for hours and hours and hours.

She makes me laugh.

I make her laugh.

She's the type of girl that I
was telling my problems about.

She was telling me her
problems about her and her dad.

I gave her advice on things.

When she'd text
me that she missed

me and I'd tell her
that I miss her too.

So we just had a
good relationship.

Obviously if he
really, really liked me,

I would have known a
lot of stuff about him.

That's where I'm stupid.

I gave myself to
someone pretty much,

just threw out my
feelings there.

All this time I would just
think about telling her,

but I just didn't
know how to tell her.

Because I think if I would
have told her over the phone,

she was just going to cut me
off and have me out of her life,

and I don't want that to happen.

I don't get the feeling
that his intentions

were to ever hurt you.

All I'm saying is the
decisions that you make now,

you can't really take back.

DAWUAN: I hope is
not over, though.

I hope I have another a chance,
because I really do like her,

and I care about her a lot.

She think by me lying to
her I don't care about her.

That's not true.

NEV: So what you
think you want to do?

.

Leave

OK.

It's been a sort of lot
for Stephanie to take in.

You've done everything
you can right now.

The next move is hers.

I think giving her
some space and giving

her some time is probably--

The best thing to do.

The best thing
for her right now.

Yeah.

Bye, man.

All right, take care.

See you.

All right.

[BLEEP]

[MUSIC PLAYING]

(SINGING) [INAUDIBLE]

NEV: What were you
just praying about?

STEPHANIE: I was
pretty much saying

how this was a crazy experience
and that I hope God gives

me the strength to
stay strong and to lead

me to the right path.

(SINGING) [INAUDIBLE]

All right.

Back at Stephanie's.

New day.

Let's sit out here.

It's hot, but OK.

It's not so bad.

We weren't sure how you
were going to feel today.

I was a little worried
that you were going to be

bummed about the whole thing.

Well, I kind of am,
but I mean, at least

I got the answers, right?

And it just sucks that it
had to turn out this way.

- You were pretty hard on him.
- I know.

I was.

And that's OK.

I don't blame you at
all, and I think you were

actually totally justified.

And I'm glad that you said
what you were feeling.

But you knew the
David Miller character

was a little questionable.

You let yourself
go along with it.

Like an idiot, yeah.

Not like an idiot, but
like someone who was looking

for a friendship,
someone who needed

a confidante, someone to talk
to who would listen to them.

And you found that
person, right?

And so you were getting
a lot out of it.

That person that David was
being is a real person.

Just his name is Dawuan.

These are small things
in the big picture.

But still he lied.

NEV: Yeah, of course, but
I don't think it's fair

just to make it so black and
white, like you're wrong,

I'm right.

But that's how I am.

I'm right and he's
wrong and it's done.

I'm just stubborn, and
it's just like that.

MAX: I think that you might
be doing yourself a disservice

if you say, well, because he
was lying about these things,

I'm going to throw this
whole special connection

that I've never had with
anyone else in my life away.

I'll probably find
it somewhere else.

But you haven't found it
anywhere else to this point.

Maybe you owe it to the person
that's been helping you out

for the past seven
months to maybe

hear them out a little more.

NEV: If you were willing to
push yourself a little bit

and go a little bit out
of your comfort zone,

it might help you feel
a little bit better

about the whole situation
if you finally did get

to sort of know who that is.

TILLY AND THE WALL: (SINGING)
Will we ever get home again.

NEV: I'm just basically
asking you if you care

enough just to hear him out.

TILLY AND THE WALL:
(SINGING) Will

we ever go back to what we had?

I believe in you, but
I believe in me too.

I believe in you, but
I believe in me too.

NEV: This episode of "Catfish"
the TV show continues now.

OK, off to Dawuan's.

I'm going to go in there and
talk to him for a minute.

If you guys want to
hang out in the car.

MAX: We'll sit in here.

Hey, man, it's Nev.

DAWUAN: Yeah.

Oh, it's a nice place, man.

Thank you.

NEV: Just tell me kind
of from the beginning

how this all started.

So wait, so when you broke
up with your ex-girlfriend,

you still had feelings for her?

Yeah, I still had
feelings for her.

NEV: So you created
the David profile?

Yeah, 'cause I still
wanted to talk to her.

I still wanted to be her friend.

I just was looking
at her wall and then

that's when I seen Stephanie.

I thought she was cute.

She gave me her number, and
we started texting each other

and that's how it
started all happening.

I didn't know it was
going to go this far.

NEV: How do you feel
about just what you did?

I feel stupid.

Yeah, I feel stupid.

I'm ashamed of myself, and I
made a big mistake in life.

STEPHANIE: I mean, what would
you do if you were in my shoes?

Find out a little
more about him.

I mean, look, you
were in such a place

where you needed someone that
you barely asked him anything

about himself for seven months.

It was all about you.

That kind of sounds
kind of selfish, huh?

You needed that help, and
he was giving it to you.

And that's an amazing gift.

I just lied about this because
I just had low self-esteem

issues and I have problems.

I guess if I never had
that, I would never

done what I did pretty much.

What would you say are some
of the problems or the feelings

that you're having?

Not knowing my dad.

Never seen him in my life.

I don't even know
his first name.

So I always wanted
a daddy, father

figure to be there in my life.

But that was one
of the things that

was just messing me up in life.

Leading up to all this,
what kind of feelings

did you have for Stephanie?

I had strong feelings for her.

I had a lot of feelings for you.

I wanted to be in a
relationship with her.

I mean, I know she
has feelings for you

because you guys have
been talking for so long.

MAX: Maybe you give him
a hug before we leave.

That's the least
I can do, right?

MAX: Yeah.

Let's walk over there.

NEV: I know she likes
your personality.

DAWUAN: Me, I'm gonna be there.

If she wants to talk
about something,

I will give her advice
or whatever she needs.

NEV: There's some things
that you didn't get a chance

to say yesterday
to Stephanie, but I

thought maybe for a
couple of minutes,

if you guys want to talk.

DAWUAN: Yeah.

All right.

NEV: I'll give you guys
a few minutes talk.

We'll be right over here.

DAWUAN: I know that you're mad.

And I feel bad
for you yesterday.

I didn't want to see any tears,
so I was just like I didn't

want to see you cry like that.

I was more sad,
disappointed, pissed off.

This is still a big shocker.

It's like wow, like
what the hell happened?

DAWUAN: I mean,
it's all up to you.

I'm not going to force
you to be my friend.

I'm not gonna force you.

STEPHANIE: No, I know,
you're a cool guy.

I thank you for making me
realise a lot of things

and just for opening my eyes.

I just thank you for
being there for me.

Just thank you for that.

I feel relief
from what happened

and just confessing
about everything.

I don't have to be
miserable no more.

I feel good.

I feel good too.

So thanks for everything.

Yeah.

All right, bye.

Take care, all right?

You too, take care.

I like your boots, by the way.

Check you out.

They're cool, huh?

DAWUAN: Yeah, they're cool.

They're tight.

MAX: How was that?

Nice?

Yeah, you were right.

Max was right.

It happens from time to time.

Home?

[MUSIC PLAYING]

(SINGING) [INAUDIBLE]

Any regrets?

STEPHANIE: I don't regret
this experience whatsoever.

I don't.

I guess you can
say I shouldn't be

judging guys, just
assuming right off the bat

that they're liars.

I pretty much left it in peace.

You know what I mean?

Everything's good now.

NEV: East to west.

Is love in between?

I don't know if
our love is real.

I think I'm ready for
anything right now.

I'm so confused.

NEV: She's lying to us.

You ready to do this?

I mean, I don't
think we have a choice.

This is definitely
a "Catfish" first.

Oh my god.
