Catfish: The TV Show (2012–…): Season 4, Episode 11 - Steven & Samm - full transcript
Rather than plan for college, a young man wants to move to California to support his online love.
>> Five minutes away.
>> Aurora, how you feeling?
>> Worried about
the secret.
>> I'm gonna be that guy
that had his mom on Catfish.
>> With the open garage.
>> It's open.
>> It's a little rainy, so
come--why don't we all go in?
[knocking on door]
>> He's just all goo-goo gaga
over this girl.
>> The beard,
it's really good, man.
It's a good beard.
Even your--your mustache is
starting to curl right here.
Look, right--yeah.
>> I got a beard
first time in my life.
>> both: Hey!
>> Oh, man!
>> Weirdo beardo.
>> Okay, did you get any--
>> All right, let's do this.
I have an email.
"Please, help my son!
Dear Nev and Max,
my name is Aurora.
I live in Fort Worth, Texas.
I'm a mother of four.
I'm writing in to you about
my son, Steven.
He recently turned 18
and is graduating
from high school."
On the scale of embarrassing mom
moments, having your mom write
in to a television show,
it ranks pretty high.
Can you imagine this kid?
Oh, my God, Mom.
"In school he was very active
and dedicated to wrestling.
He has a huge heart,
which is one of the things I
love most about him,
but I worry it will get him
in trouble.
Steven recently met a girl
online named Samm."
>> both: Two Ms.
>> "They've been texting and
communicating now for about
six months.
My concern is that he's getting
too involved emotionally with
someone he hasn't even met yet
in person."
>> * I got a television
* It's filling me with home *
>> "Being that she lives in
California, who knows?
People are different out there.
It could even be a boy."
>> It could be a boy.
>> "Another thing I should
probably mention is that Steven
has actually been catfished
before.
I want Steven to be sure of what
he's doing
and that it's with someone who
is honest and that adds
to his happiness."
>> * My head, my shoulders
* Knees and toes
* My head, my shoulders
* Knees and toes
* My head, my shoulders
* Knees and toes
* They take me where
* I want to go
>> "Steven hasn't really dated
in real life,
so I worry that he is going to
get his hopes up
and that his heart will be
crushed.
Please come help and save my son
from his second catfishing."
It's just unusual that we get
solicited to help someone
outside of their consent.
>> Right.
It could be the mom who could
be...
>> Samm, who could be
the person--
>> Right, Samm could be the mom
teaching her son a lesson.
>> So let's have a little
session with Dr. Mom.
[computer rings]
>> Hello, Aurora.
Hi.
>> Hi.
>> How you doing?
>> I'm good. How are you?
>> Good.
You're very straight to
business.
>> Yes.
>> She's a mother of four.
>> I know, you don't have a lot
of time.
You're very busy.
I get it.
I get it.
We just read your email.
>> You have a universal story.
There are a lot of mothers out
there who are worried about
their 18-year-old sons.
>> I guess, like any mom,
I want to kind of block
the heartache right now
because he's only 18.
He's pretty head over heels
with her.
>> You've got a feeling that
something is amiss.
>> Well, yeah, she's way
over there in--
>> Crazy California.
>> In crazy California.
>> You know how you guys are.
So I'm trying to figure out
is she real, is she a guy?
>> Has Steven shown you pictures
of her and stuff?
>> Yes.
She's beautiful.
>> Is she too beautiful?
>> Some pictures she--she's
too beautiful.
Then he was showing videos of
her wrestling.
>> So she's a wrestler also.
>> Yes.
>> Do you routinely go through
your kids' Facebook pages?
>> Oh, yeah, definitely.
I have to be their friend.
>> You're probably not on
Snapchat.
>> I am.
>> She is.
>> Hip mom.
You said that this had happened
to Steven before.
>> Yeah.
It--it happened before,
so I wanted to video chat
with her, so I know she's real.
And he's like, "She doesn't have
Skype."
>> Your son is in what you
suspect could be
a catfish love affair.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> So you specifically said to
your son, "I'm gonna apply to
Catfish for you."
>> To Catfish, yes.
He's okay with it
because he really wants to see
if this girl is real anyway.
>> We're gonna come to
Fort Worth,
get this show on the road.
>> All right.
>> Great.
>> Bye.
>> Back to Texas.
>> * Like a prisoner
* Waiting to be free
* Like an island from afar
>> Oh, we made it.
>> We made it.
>> * [vocalizing]
>> We're starting our day with
healthy, fresh juice.
>> Jews with juice.
>> Let's go.
>> Aurora's like, "Hey, take off
the love blinders."
>> I think she's understandably
concerned that he's gonna spend
his last dollar flying out to
California to meet this mystery
girlfriend who's gonna end up
breaking his heart
and leaving him with nothing.
Let's meet Aurora.
[knocking on door]
>> Hey.
>> Hi, how are you?
>> Hey, guys.
>> This is Max.
>> Hi, Max.
>> Steven.
>> Hi, Nev.
>> How you doing, buddy?
>> Pretty good. How about you?
>> Bring it in.
>> Nev's a hugger.
>> Oh, my goodness.
Hey.
Hey.
We've never had a show where
someone's mom...
[laughter]
Emailed in asking for help
for their son.
>> Yeah, 'cause she--
she's a concerned mom,
and, you know, she just wants
the best for me.
>> She's a good mom.
>> Yes, I am.
>> I'm gonna be that guy that
had his mom on Catfish.
>> You--you already are
that guy.
>> I never would have thought
this would be happening to me.
>> He's just, like, all goo-goo
gaga over this girl,
and he's not listening.
>> I'd like to know a little bit
more about your Internet
relationship history.
>> I met Samm
on Twitter,
and I followed her.
>> Now, was that because
she was really cute?
>> Yeah.
She was posting some kind of
sad tweets, and I was like,
"Okay, I'm gonna
see what's wrong."
You know, see if I can, you
know, comfort her in any way.
>> Is all correspondence just
through Twitter?
>> I got her number the exact
same day.
>> Oh, okay.
>> Yeah, and then we started
texting.
>> Have you ever talked to her
on the phone?
>> Only a handful of times.
>> But you've heard her voice.
>> I have.
I'm just kind of content with
texting.
We talk, literally, from when we
wake up to when we go to sleep,
and it's throughout
the entire day.
>> I let it go and let it go
until that's all he was doing.
>> We were always there for each
other.
We were both going through
hard times.
>> What was going on?
>> I was going through
depression.
Wrestling wasn't panning out
like I thought.
>> He failed a class,
and he hit the locker.
So he got the boxer's fracture,
and we had to go get surgery
and everything,
so he couldn't wrestle.
>> Oh.
>> I actually only got to
wrestle four matches.
I devoted my life to wrestling,
and I just broke down
because of that.
Lost interest in school.
Just didn't care about anything
anymore.
At a point, I thought about
suicide.
>> * Don't *
* Don't you let me down *
* Fall
>> Samm, she helped me
quite a lot.
>> * Fall to the battleground
* Run through the arrows
* Let the reins fall
* Behind you
>> I kind of brought myself
out of this deep hole
because I wanted to
make my life better for her
'cause I see her in my future.
>> * [vocalizing]
>> What does your future look
like right now?
>> Right now, I actually wanted
to move in with her
to California
to help support her.
>> It doesn't look like your mom
knew about your plan
until right now.
>> She did not.
>> His plans keep changing
on me.
He went to the naval recruiter.
He was gonna join the Navy.
He was gonna go--
>> Did that wash out
because of Samm?
>> I didn't want to have to be
apart from her.
I don't want her to be alone
and have to struggle.
She'd have to pay for everything
by herself.
>> And so you would go there
and get a job
and--and support her?
>> Yes.
>> It's very chivalrous.
>> He's making life decisions
according to what may happen
with her.
>> Have you never Skyped with
her or video chatted with her?
>> We've never successfully
video chatted.
It never worked out.
Like, the connection was bad.
>> Has she sent you any pictures
directly to you?
>> She sent me a few pictures,
but the majority of the time,
it's just pictures that she has
on Facebook or Instagram.
>> I don't want him to fall
again,
like he did last year.
>> Samm only wants the best
for me.
I've probably never been closer
to someone than I am with her.
Uh, she--
[chuckles]
Other than my family,
other than my mom.
>> All right, all right.
What I'm realizing now more than
before is that you don't have
a problem with Samm.
She can be a part of
the plan but not...
>> both: The plan.
>> Can we high-five?
>> Right. Okay, high five.
So I'd like to just see
what Samm looks like
and get a feel for this girl
that you're in love with.
Okay, here we go.
Wow, so...
>> Gwen Stefani.
>> Quite a lady.
>> She's pretty.
>> I got lucky.
>> Well, you don't know
what you got yet.
We've taken this conversation
as far as we can.
>> We're gonna go do what we do.
>> Thank you, guys.
>> Thank you.
>> This is a great story.
>> This is really interesting.
>> We should do more
parent-child Catfish.
I think she called us because
she doesn't know how to properly
handle it.
>> At this point, I've seen
a little too much to say
that I think she's her.
>> What hangs in the balance
is his future,
and if he doesn't figure
this relationship out now,
he might make a bad decision.
>> Come into my room.
All right, let's get the notepad
ready.
Here's a pen.
What do we know about Steven?
He was a hopeless romantic.
>> He met this girl...
>> both: Samm.
>> But she strangely won't
video chat with Steve.
His mom's concerned about him.
He's about to be a high school
graduate.
And right now, he's totally
wrapped up in this girl.
>> So he can't take a step
forward in his life until we
figure out this mystery.
>> We got an email from Steve,
Samm's info.
>> Samm with two Ms?
That's a fake name
if I ever heard one.
>> Here's her Twitter.
Check that out.
>> A lot of selfies
and mirror pics.
>> A lot of mirror pics.
Pittsburg--
>> both: Pittsburg
Wrestling Tournament.
>> Wow, "Queen of the Mat."
There's a ton of wrestling
videos.
>> Let's see.
>> No way.
>> A hot wrestling girl.
>> I just can't tell that--
if it's her or not.
Wow.
>> I wouldn't want to get
in a fight with this girl.
>> I would--no.
Oh, she posted it.
Look, she's got
a YouTube channel.
>> Oh, she's got a YouTube
channel.
>> That's already a really good
sign, if that's her.
>> Well, but that means that
she's not video chatting
with him for a reason.
>> Which is weird.
What is she hiding?
Is this Steve?
Oh, [bleep].
She retweeted Steve's tweet
that says, "It's amazing how one
person you just met a few months
ago can turn into the most
important person in your life."
>> That's a big deal.
That is a public display.
>> Everything, so far, is
pointing us in the direction
that Samm is the girl
in the pictures.
I think we gotta reach out
to some friends.
>> Yeah.
>> Here she is,
and she tags a guy.
Here's his--see,
"Happy birthday, you stud."
>> Not a lot on his page.
>> Hmm.
>> We found--
>> We should just send him
a message.
>> Let's just send him
a message, right.
>> We gotta see if she's got
a boyfriend.
>> "Hey, Erick, my name is Nev.
We are actually on a case right
now that may involve one of
your close friends.
Please call me when you can.
Cheers, Nev."
>> All right.
>> Send.
Should we reach out
to another friend?
>> I'm just gonna play the part
of Max, while you do
the hard work.
[cell phone rings]
>> Oh, you're getting a phone
call from Hanford, California.
>> That's--that's Erick.
All right, here.
Hey, is this Erick?
Hey, Erick, how are you doing?
It's Nev from Catfish.
We are curious to know a little
bit more about your friend
Samm.
How do you guys know each other?
I have a phone number that I
believe to be hers, if you
could just confirm that it is.
It's a 559 [bleep].
>> So how good of friends was
Samm with Jasmine?
Oh, cool.
Yeah, text it to us.
This has been really, really
helpful, so thank you.
All right, later, man.
>> She shared a phone.
>> Well, hold on a second.
>> This is the big news.
>> This could be the big--
>> This is the--She shared a
phone with a girl, Jasmine.
>> Missing piece.
>> And maybe Steve has been
talking to Jasmine.
>> Oh, look, bam.
There are some more tweets.
"That moment you get a message
that seems hella cute,
but you check and it's really to
your best friend..."
>> both: "That account
is linked."
>> Hold on a second.
You can actually share a Twitter
account with someone.
Samm could have been signed in
to her friend's account.
Jasmine thought she got
a really cute message,
but it wasn't actually for her.
It was a message for her friend
Samm.
>> Let's look at Jasmine's
Twitter.
>> Here is Jasmine.
>> "Don't judge what I look like
today.
I look foul today.
I feel I'm almost hitting
the bottom, and it effing sucks.
>> She does have some self-image
issues.
>> "I woke up this morning.
I'd rather be home and cry
than be at school and feeling
tears down my face."
>> She's going through
some stuff.
>> She sounds a lot more like
the sad...
>> Right.
>> Twitter personality
that Steve originally reached
out to.
>> Right, yeah.
>> Jasmine, she's, like, really
struggling with something.
>> "It's a serious struggle to
sleep at night."
>> That's what happens when
you're living with a lie.
>> Theory one...
>> Okay.
>> Samm is Samm but...
>> Right.
>> Doesn't want to video chat
and doesn't want to get too
close to Steve at least,
like, visually.
Theory two, Steve actually has
been talking to Jasmine
this whole time.
>> But before we go any further,
we need to talk to Steve
'cause he might have
a key piece of information
that might unlock
this whole mystery.
>> The cut-and-dried case is
no longer so cut and dry.
It's complicated.
>> Mom can slide in.
We can sit.
So we've got some interesting
things that we found.
We've got some questions that
we're trying to answer.
Hopefully some of this
will make sense,
and maybe you can be the key
to unlock this mystery.
>> Okay.
>> I'm nervous.
>> The first thing we did
was we went through
her Twitter page, okay?
>> That's where he met her.
>> It seems like a real page...
>> Right.
>> Posted by a real girl.
>> From what we can tell.
The next thing we did
was just searched Samm,
and right away,
the first thing that came up
was a YouTube channel.
All of her fights are up here.
It's hard to see her face.
There's no, like, perfect,
crystal clear moment.
>> Where is she?
>> She's in the black, I think.
That seems to indicate she's
been telling you the truth.
Do you think you would want to
wrestle her?
>> Yeah, that would be crazy.
>> This girl could take you.
>> [laughs]
>> What are the chances that you
found--I don't know, maybe there
are a lot of beautiful girls
that wrestle.
>> Right.
>> Right? That's what I think.
>> No, I mean, it's a find.
>> It's very rare
that we get this far
into an investigation
and have all signs point to
the story checking out
and the girl being the girl
in the pictures.
>> I'm just happy, you know?
Everything checks out, so this
seems like good news.
>> But there's still a little
bit more to talk about.
>> There's still a little a fly
in the soup.
>> Okay.
>> I knew it.
>> One thing that we thought was
interesting was this tweet,
which is back from July.
"That moment you get a message
that seems hella cute
but you check and it's really to
your best friend..."
>> both: "That account
is linked."
>> What does it mean?
I don't--
>> Good question.
When was it that you guys
started talking?
>> Around that time.
>> This was the first thing that
got our antennas perky.
So here's this guy, Erick.
We sent him a quick message.
He called us.
He knows Samm.
She's Samm.
She wrestles.
Totally checks out.
The only thing is, he said
"I remember at one point
Samm was sharing her phone
with her best friend, Jasmine."
Do you know about Jasmine?
Is that a person in Samm's life?
>> Never heard--
>> She never talked about
someone named Jasmine?
>> No.
>> Maybe Jasmine was using
the phone and went on Twitter
and saw a message and was like,
"Oh, that's so sweet,"
and then realized, oh, I'm
signed in to the wrong account.
Jasmine may have been signed in
to Samm's account,
then given you her number,
which you, of course, thought
was Samm's number.
And then you guys went off
Twitter, and Samm never even
really paid attention
or noticed it.
>> Yeah, that actually does
kind of make sense,
'cause if she doesn't want to
show me her face on video chat--
>> So we went to her Twitter,
and here's Jasmine.
>> You've never seen her before?
>> I've never seen her.
>> You've never seen this girl,
right?
>> You've never seen her in
pictures with Samm?
>> I've never seen that girl
in my life.
>> We see a lot of tweets
from Jasmine,
and she doesn't seem to be
terribly happy
and is a little kind of insecure
about the way she looks,
and she feels ugly.
>> He said she tweeted something
depressing...
>> Right.
>> And that's why he messaged
her.
Maybe Jasmine's the one who
posted that depressing message.
>> When I talk to Samm,
every time she has a problem,
it sounds this depressing.
You know, she--she says stuff
that--she's, like, a mess
right now.
>> Then it starts to seem like
maybe there's a chance
you could actually be talking to
her friend Jasmine that has
very low self-confidence
and doesn't want to show you
who she really is,
A, because...
she's been lying, and, B,
because she doesn't think
you'll find her attractive.
>> That does make sense.
>> How would you feel if that--
that were the case?
>> It kinda hurts.
But if it does turn out to be
this Jasmine girl,
there's still that emotional
connection that we have.
>> I don't know.
That's starting it out as a lie,
because he doesn't even know
her real name.
I don't see how he could look at
her and say,
"Oh, you're the one."
>> If I can just see who
I've actually been talking to,
I'd be a lot happier.
>> Let's send a picture
of the three of us.
>> Okay.
>> And just say, "Hey,
I'm with the guys.
They'd love to talk to you.
If they call, will you answer?"
>> Okay.
>> Okay, how was it?
>> Okay, that's good.
>> I know this is crazy,
but you're about to get
a phone call from Nev.
Do you think you could answer
a call?
>> Oh, my God.
>> Oh!
>> "Yes, I will answer!"
All I'm gonna try and do is get
her to agree
to let us come and meet her
this weekend.
>> Okay.
>> I'm gonna go call her.
I'll be right back.
>> Are you scared?
>> I am scared.
[phone line rings]
>> [clears throat]
Hi, it's Nev.
Is this Samm?
Thanks for getting on the phone.
I'm down here in Texas
with Steven, and we're sort of
at this place now
where we realized it was time to
reach out
and start to get your side of
the story and see if
maybe sort of taking it to the
next level is something you
would be interested in doing.
>> Um...
>> Yeah, we could do that
this weekend.
There is something Steven needs
to know.
This would be, obviously,
a great opportunity
to tell him that.
>> I am looking forward to
meeting you.
Okay, bye.
I just got off the phone
with Samm.
>> Was it Samm?
>> I don't know.
I didn't question.
I just wanted to have
a nice call.
And there was one
awkward moment.
She's like, "Look, there's
definitely something
I need to tell him
that I haven't told him.
I'd like to do that in person."
>> Okay.
>> But for the most part, we're,
like, thumbs-up.
And we can go, like, tomorrow,
and she's down to meet us
this weekend.
>> [gasps] Really?
>> Okay.
>> Wow.
>> * We will all be born again
>> That's amazing news.
>> I'm nervous.
>> * When the winter days
* Are dead
>> Are you still now, like,
100% for sure
this is what you wanna do?
>> Yes, this is 100%
what I want to do.
>> Can we bring the lovely
Aurora?
>> Wait.
Do you want to come with us?
>> Yes, I want to go.
>> Is that okay?
Is it cool if Mom comes with us?
>> Yeah.
>> Well, then I think
we should all go.
>> Oh, yeah.
It's a family affair.
>> [laughs]
Oh, gosh.
>> I just want to leave.
>> Wow, I can't believe
we're all going to Cali.
>> Whoo!
>> All right, bye.
>> Bye.
>> See you all tomorrow.
>> Get some sleep.
>> All right, I'll try.
>> * Don't forget *
* About the stars
* The sky
>> It could be Jasmine,
or it could be Samm.
>> * In the quiet of nothing
* To the hands of grace
* Don't delete my baby *
>> This whole time, do you have
it in your mind that it's gonna
be Samm?
>> Yeah. Yeah, pretty much.
>> You should seriously consider
that this might not be Samm.
>> It's just my gut feeling.
>> Look at that,
wheeling his mom's bag.
>> He's my baby.
I love him.
>> * Just let it all out
>> Ugh.
>> * To find
>> Yeah, this is a big, big
thing for me right now.
Yeah.
>> It'll be okay.
>> Yes.
>> * Just let it all out
>> Let's do it.
>> * Everything is starting
* To wake
>> Aurora, how you feeling?
>> Excited.
Worried about the secret.
'Cause my mind's going crazy
about what that could be.
>> [chuckles]
Destiny awaits.
The one with the open garage.
>> It's open.
>> My heart's definitely beating
a lot harder and faster
than it was.
[exhales sharply]
I'm ready.
>> It's a little rainy,
so come--why don't we all go in?
Here we go.
[knocking on door]
>> Calm down, bud.
>> [mouths words]
>> Lot of sounds.
[door opens]
>> Hi.
>> Hi.
>> Nev.
>> Hi. Samm.
>> Good to meet you.
>> You too.
>> Hi.
>> Hi.
[laughs]
>> Uh...
>> Hi, Samm.
>> * All my life
* I've done you right *
>> Hi.
[laughs]
>> You're even more beautiful
than I thought you'd be.
>> Thank you.
>> We're certainly all
surprised that it's you.
We weren't sure exactly
what to expect.
>> You look like your picture.
>> How are you feeling
right now?
>> I'm nervous, oh, my God.
Like, I can't believe
this is real.
>> I know.
I don't really know what to say.
>> Like, I feel like I'm
dreaming or something.
>> Well, you guys haven't really
met yet.
You should meet each other.
I mean--
>> Yeah. We have the same nails.
>> Yeah, I noticed.
Look at that.
I mean, that's, like, amazing.
Look at this.
From what we understand,
you're a wrestler.
>> Mm-hmm.
>> Is that still something that
you're doing?
>> Yeah, I'm gonna wrestle
in college.
>> Which is awesome.
>> Yeah, and I want to be
a wrestling coach, so...
>> We've seen some of your
videos, and you--I wouldn't want
to mess with you.
>> Oh, yeah, you don't want to.
[laughter]
>> I'm, like, kind of waiting
for the other shoe to drop
or something.
>> We were a little freaked out
because we found some
information out about you
and your friend Jasmine.
Is that someone that you're
still close with?
>> Yeah, yeah.
>> We heard some story that you
guys were, like, sharing a phone
at one point.
But there was never any point
where Steven was interacting
with Jasmine, was there?
>> No, no, not at all.
>> No.
>> All me.
>> I, 1,000%, was sure that
that was the case.
W--I mean, I gotta know.
What's the secret?
>> My thing that I had to tell
you is just that
during when we were talking,
like, I dated people.
I mean, it went on a lot longer
than I said it was.
The other people, they're, like,
completely just cut now,
and I'm kind of just focused
on him.
And that's just my big thing.
I mean, I'm real.
My feelings are real.
Everything's real.
I mean, that's just the only
thing I have to say.
I'm sorry for lying and stuff,
keeping that.
>> Okay, well, that's a big
deal.
>> Mm-hmm.
>> 'Cause I know that for
the past, at least, few months,
Steve's been really
focused on you...
>> Yeah.
>> And hasn't been dating
anybody.
>> It's kind of hard because
I just wasn't sure yet
'cause we haven't met yet...
>> Right.
>> Basically.
>> I do feel hurt about that.
Hey, as long as the other guy's
out of the picture--
>> Yeah.
>> [laughs]
That's the thing about Steven.
>> Right.
>> He's--he's so gung ho
for you, you know?
>> [laughs]
>> He's, like--he'll forgive
anything right now.
>> Aw. Yeah.
>> Right, right now.
>> That's what worries me
because I don't want...
>> [laughs]
>> The whole "playing with his
heart" kind of thing.
>> Yeah, I know.
That's not my intentions,
though.
>> 'Cause I'm happy
if he's happy.
>> It was actually Aurora that
wrote in to the show.
>> Thank you.
>> She was, obviously,
the greatest skeptic.
>> Oh, my gosh.
>> She's looking out
for her kid.
>> Yeah, 'cause if you spent
time texting him, you know how
him and I are, right?
>> Yeah.
>> He's probably told you.
We're really close, so...
>> Yeah, I've heard.
>> It's tough for mothers to see
their--their sons in
love?
>> [laughs]
>> We do have to talk about
our future together.
>> He's been excited,
looking to the future,
and making plans
for you and him.
And he wants to be part of
your plans.
>> Yeah.
>> But he's even been willing to
sort of ignore his own...
>> Yeah.
>> Future plans...
>> Yeah.
>> To come be with you.
>> I mean, I want you to do best
for what's in your future,
me to do best for what--
I mean, yeah, just realistic.
>> Will you give this guy a hug?
He's shaking.
Just help calm him down
a little bit?
>> I am shaking.
>> Are you okay?
>> I'm fine. I'm just happy.
You know, I can't really take
my eyes off of you.
>> Aw.
>> All right, so look, you guys
should hang out, and we'll--
we'll see you in a little bit.
>> All right.
I appreciate it, guys.
>> Yeah.
Did you want to have a second
with Steven?
Do you need to say anything to
him privately?
>> No, I don't. He's good.
>> No? Okay.
He's good.
>> I taught him well.
>> All right, you kids have fun.
>> All right.
>> I don't know her too well,
but from what I get, she's real
cool, calm, and collected.
>> She's--she's cool.
>> But she has a poker face
right now.
>> Yeah, yeah.
She does have a poker face.
She's a little standoffish
right now.
>> No, don't.
>> I like your shoes, though.
I didn't--I see other people
wearing 'em, but--
>> [laughs]
>> It's so unreal.
>> Mm.
>> Yesterday I was in Texas.
Now I'm sitting next to you.
It was actually her.
I actually got to talk to
this girl face-to-face
that I have been talking to
through texts for the past
seven, eight months.
And I can't stop talking,
I can't stop thinking about her.
Like, it's--it's just so much
more amazing than I could have
ever imagined.
And she was so much beautiful--
more beautiful than I thought
she was.
I want to say I--
[exhales sharply]
All right, I'm just gonna
calm down.
[upbeat music]
>> Gotta check in with Steve,
see how everything went
yesterday.
Think they got to first base?
>> Well, it would be a wrestling
term.
>> Did he pin her?
>> Did he pin her?
>> Right.
>> She probably pinned him.
>> Let's see how it went.
[knocking on door]
>> Hey, guys.
>> Yo.
Oh, he's got a girl over.
We should go. We should go.
>> Whoa.
>> He's got a girl over.
>> She's on the bed.
>> Hey, Mom.
>> Hi.
>> So how did it go?
>> Yeah, give us the scoop.
>> We just sat there, talked.
I felt pretty comfortable
around her.
I felt like I've known her
for a lot longer than a day.
There is that feeling of...
[sighs]
She lied to me, you know.
She's--she was talking to some
other guys,
which I'm--I'm kind of
just trying to get rid
of those feelings.
I'm just having a lot of
conflicting emotions right now.
>> Welcome to adulthood.
>> Yeah.
[laughter]
You know, there's definitely
something I'm gonna have to
deal with and talk to her about.
>> I just have to say
his actions will speak louder
than his words, you know?
>> She wanted to hang out with
me at the Superior Ice Cream
shop.
>> Okay.
Mom, I think yesterday it was
great that you were there.
>> Mm-hmm.
>> But today, I'm not sure they
need, you know, a chaperone.
>> No, they don't.
>> So maybe you'll sit this one
out...
>> Yeah.
>> And we'll let these young
lovebirds--
>> Eat ice cream.
Bye.
>> Bye, Mom.
>> Bye, Son.
Have fun.
>> I don't think I'm gonna find
anybody else like this.
So I just want us to be on
the same page.
>> Right.
What's important is that you
tell her exactly how you feel.
You don't have to sweep anything
under the rug.
If you feel mixed up, I think
it's fair to tell her that you
feel mixed up.
Hello.
>> Hello.
>> Hey, Samm.
>> Hi.
>> How are you?
>> Good.
>> That's good.
>> Why don't you guys hang out?
See you in a little bit.
>> All right.
I like your outfit.
>> Thank you.
>> So this whole time,
you were talking to other guys
while you were talking to me.
>> I mean, yeah,
talking to other guys,
and, you know,
that's basically it.
>> I'd ask you,
"Am I the only one?"
You lied to me and said you
weren't talking to anyone else
and I was the only one.
>> That was bad on my part,
but I just thought I was doing
what was the smartest thing to
stay away from hurting you,
I guess.
I don't know.
There's just not really
an explanation for lying at all.
You were always so sweet to me,
and, like, I know you're
a really good guy,
and that's honest.
That's honest.
Like, you're one of the best
guys, like, I've ever met
in my life.
And that's all true.
>> What about the future?
Do you--do you think you could
see a future with us together?
>> Over texting, I felt like
we were heading, like, towards
a relationship maybe.
So now I just feel like
the connection is kind of
different.
In a way, I still feel like the
connection, like, we've always
had as friends and stuff
and we can talk all day
and we can do whatever.
It's just that--
just the friend connection I
feel in person really.
>> So you don't have feelings
for me?
>> I just--I don't know.
Like, I have feelings for you,
like, as, like, a best friend.
[solemn music]
*
>> What about when we text?
I definitely felt like we
were in a relationship
with all the cute nicknames
and all the little messages
we'd send each other.
Do you--do you still feel
the same way?
>> If--I don't know.
I just feel--Honestly?
In person, we're strangers.
So it's just weird to connect
the two after, like,
such a long time.
>> * I can see
* For miles
>> I know I don't want
a relationship anytime soon.
I just want to go to college,
wrestle, get my degree,
and then try and figure out
what I want to do with my life
and my career.
So, you know, I'm not thinking
relationship-wise.
I'm not thinking any of that
type of stuff for the future
now.
>> I don't really see a point of
me being in your life then.
[sighs]
>> * Open
* Smiling
* Reach out
*
* That's all right *
* I decline
*
>> This episode of
Catfish: The TV Show
continues now.
>> * Heart beats
>> What happened?
>> * Slowly
>> She basically just told me
she doesn't need me.
[sniffles]
>> * Living off
* Your memories
>> I said, "If you want to just
focus on your own life,
I don't see a point of me
being your friend."
>> * Victims
* Hurting
* Bound by flaws
>> I'm done.
>> * And cursing
* Soldiers
>> At least now you know.
>> [sniffles]
Yeah.
I can stop wasting my time.
>> I'm gonna go just check in
with her quickly.
*
Hey.
Okay.
Um, Steve's a little bummed.
>> Yeah, I'm sure.
I understand.
>> Yeah.
>> I thought I wanted romantic
things with him.
But this is what I was waiting
for, to see if it was still
a romantic connection at all,
but it's not.
Like, I only feel like I could
be friends with him.
I mean, I would like him to be
in my life,
and I'll be there for him,
but if he just wants it all,
then that's just--
I can't give it to him.
>> She's not the person
I thought I wanted.
>> You deserve someone who is
going to appreciate
all the things that you do
and the kind of person you are.
>> I feel like he was just so
blinded with his own, like,
being 100 in it,
that he didn't get I was trying
to tell him it's not for sure.
He didn't get the signs I was
trying to tell him
that I don't know yet.
He just brushed that off
and just focused on,
we're gonna have a future.
>> Right.
>> We're gonna have
a relationship.
And I do feel bad about it,
but I'm just--
I'm just--just trying to be real
about it.
It just upsets me that
he can just say, like,
"Why am I even gonna bother
being in your life?"
He deserves better.
>> I just don't want to see you
now go home
and go down into a spiral
of getting depressed.
>> No, I'll--I'll get through
it.
It'll take some time, but I'm--
I'm gonna get through it.
>> Of course you will.
>> I'm sure there are more
beautiful girls that wrestle.
[chuckles]
>> Let's get outta here.
>> * I'm living on the moon *
* I guess
* Don't understand a word *
* You said
>> Are you glad that we came?
>> Yeah.
I'm gonna learn something
from this, and that's--
that's what I'm trying
to focus on.
>> Not getting the girl,
in this case,
meant getting something
way more valuable.
>> * And the price I paid
>> You realized you've been
putting her before you,
that now it's time to really
focus on what's best for you.
*
[line ringing]
>> Yo!
>> Hey!
How you doing?
>> I'm doing pretty well.
>> And?
How is Samm?
>> We don't send cute messages
and all that anymore,
but we still talk to each other
from when we wake up to when
we go to sleep every day.
>> Wow, so you guys are still in
really close contact.
>> Yeah.
>> So are you guys--you're just
friends now?
>> Yeah.
>> Wow.
>> Nice.
And how's your mom?
>> She just got home from work.
>> Bring her in.
Aurora.
>> Hey, how's your son?
He says he's doing okay.
>> He's doing good.
>> Steve, are you and Samm
planning on meeting up?
>> Yes.
Next Wednesday she's coming.
>> What?
>> Whoa!
>> Yeah, for about six days.
>> Oh, my God.
>> Whoa.
>> Mom, is--whoo!
>> Open door policy.
>> Open door?
>> Are you looking forward to
a possibility of something
happening during those six days?
>> Who knows what could happen?
>> That's exciting.
That's really cool.
I'm glad to hear everything is
working out.
>> Yeah.
>> both: Bye.
[line rings]
>> Hi, how is everything?
>> Everything's really good now.
I almost lost Steven
for a second there through
the "just being friends" thing,
but now, like, we're the best
we've ever been.
Like, we're really close
right now.
Like, I'm not talking to
any guys.
There's no drama, no--
no nonsense and all of that.
I'm actually going out to Texas
soon.
>> We heard.
>> Yeah.
>> I'm excited.
It's gonna be a lot of fun.
>> Maybe this time you'll get to
wrestle.
>> Yeah, we are gonna wrestle.
It's gonna--I'm gonna put it all
over YouTube everywhere.
It's gonna be famous.
>> Bye, Samm.
>> Samm, bye.
>> Good luck.
[upbeat music]
*
>> [groans]
>> We checked in with some of
the catfish and hopefuls
from previous seasons
to see what they were up to.
>> Hey.
>> Looks like some things
have changed.
>> [laughs]
>> I actually died.
I was on a ventilator.
>> You got shot?
>> The bullet hit me right here.
>> This whole thing could end in
another salacious fight.
I look forward to seeing you
next week on
Catfish: Where Are They Now?
1573
00:41:03.
>> Aurora, how you feeling?
>> Worried about
the secret.
>> I'm gonna be that guy
that had his mom on Catfish.
>> With the open garage.
>> It's open.
>> It's a little rainy, so
come--why don't we all go in?
[knocking on door]
>> He's just all goo-goo gaga
over this girl.
>> The beard,
it's really good, man.
It's a good beard.
Even your--your mustache is
starting to curl right here.
Look, right--yeah.
>> I got a beard
first time in my life.
>> both: Hey!
>> Oh, man!
>> Weirdo beardo.
>> Okay, did you get any--
>> All right, let's do this.
I have an email.
"Please, help my son!
Dear Nev and Max,
my name is Aurora.
I live in Fort Worth, Texas.
I'm a mother of four.
I'm writing in to you about
my son, Steven.
He recently turned 18
and is graduating
from high school."
On the scale of embarrassing mom
moments, having your mom write
in to a television show,
it ranks pretty high.
Can you imagine this kid?
Oh, my God, Mom.
"In school he was very active
and dedicated to wrestling.
He has a huge heart,
which is one of the things I
love most about him,
but I worry it will get him
in trouble.
Steven recently met a girl
online named Samm."
>> both: Two Ms.
>> "They've been texting and
communicating now for about
six months.
My concern is that he's getting
too involved emotionally with
someone he hasn't even met yet
in person."
>> * I got a television
* It's filling me with home *
>> "Being that she lives in
California, who knows?
People are different out there.
It could even be a boy."
>> It could be a boy.
>> "Another thing I should
probably mention is that Steven
has actually been catfished
before.
I want Steven to be sure of what
he's doing
and that it's with someone who
is honest and that adds
to his happiness."
>> * My head, my shoulders
* Knees and toes
* My head, my shoulders
* Knees and toes
* My head, my shoulders
* Knees and toes
* They take me where
* I want to go
>> "Steven hasn't really dated
in real life,
so I worry that he is going to
get his hopes up
and that his heart will be
crushed.
Please come help and save my son
from his second catfishing."
It's just unusual that we get
solicited to help someone
outside of their consent.
>> Right.
It could be the mom who could
be...
>> Samm, who could be
the person--
>> Right, Samm could be the mom
teaching her son a lesson.
>> So let's have a little
session with Dr. Mom.
[computer rings]
>> Hello, Aurora.
Hi.
>> Hi.
>> How you doing?
>> I'm good. How are you?
>> Good.
You're very straight to
business.
>> Yes.
>> She's a mother of four.
>> I know, you don't have a lot
of time.
You're very busy.
I get it.
I get it.
We just read your email.
>> You have a universal story.
There are a lot of mothers out
there who are worried about
their 18-year-old sons.
>> I guess, like any mom,
I want to kind of block
the heartache right now
because he's only 18.
He's pretty head over heels
with her.
>> You've got a feeling that
something is amiss.
>> Well, yeah, she's way
over there in--
>> Crazy California.
>> In crazy California.
>> You know how you guys are.
So I'm trying to figure out
is she real, is she a guy?
>> Has Steven shown you pictures
of her and stuff?
>> Yes.
She's beautiful.
>> Is she too beautiful?
>> Some pictures she--she's
too beautiful.
Then he was showing videos of
her wrestling.
>> So she's a wrestler also.
>> Yes.
>> Do you routinely go through
your kids' Facebook pages?
>> Oh, yeah, definitely.
I have to be their friend.
>> You're probably not on
Snapchat.
>> I am.
>> She is.
>> Hip mom.
You said that this had happened
to Steven before.
>> Yeah.
It--it happened before,
so I wanted to video chat
with her, so I know she's real.
And he's like, "She doesn't have
Skype."
>> Your son is in what you
suspect could be
a catfish love affair.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> So you specifically said to
your son, "I'm gonna apply to
Catfish for you."
>> To Catfish, yes.
He's okay with it
because he really wants to see
if this girl is real anyway.
>> We're gonna come to
Fort Worth,
get this show on the road.
>> All right.
>> Great.
>> Bye.
>> Back to Texas.
>> * Like a prisoner
* Waiting to be free
* Like an island from afar
>> Oh, we made it.
>> We made it.
>> * [vocalizing]
>> We're starting our day with
healthy, fresh juice.
>> Jews with juice.
>> Let's go.
>> Aurora's like, "Hey, take off
the love blinders."
>> I think she's understandably
concerned that he's gonna spend
his last dollar flying out to
California to meet this mystery
girlfriend who's gonna end up
breaking his heart
and leaving him with nothing.
Let's meet Aurora.
[knocking on door]
>> Hey.
>> Hi, how are you?
>> Hey, guys.
>> This is Max.
>> Hi, Max.
>> Steven.
>> Hi, Nev.
>> How you doing, buddy?
>> Pretty good. How about you?
>> Bring it in.
>> Nev's a hugger.
>> Oh, my goodness.
Hey.
Hey.
We've never had a show where
someone's mom...
[laughter]
Emailed in asking for help
for their son.
>> Yeah, 'cause she--
she's a concerned mom,
and, you know, she just wants
the best for me.
>> She's a good mom.
>> Yes, I am.
>> I'm gonna be that guy that
had his mom on Catfish.
>> You--you already are
that guy.
>> I never would have thought
this would be happening to me.
>> He's just, like, all goo-goo
gaga over this girl,
and he's not listening.
>> I'd like to know a little bit
more about your Internet
relationship history.
>> I met Samm
on Twitter,
and I followed her.
>> Now, was that because
she was really cute?
>> Yeah.
She was posting some kind of
sad tweets, and I was like,
"Okay, I'm gonna
see what's wrong."
You know, see if I can, you
know, comfort her in any way.
>> Is all correspondence just
through Twitter?
>> I got her number the exact
same day.
>> Oh, okay.
>> Yeah, and then we started
texting.
>> Have you ever talked to her
on the phone?
>> Only a handful of times.
>> But you've heard her voice.
>> I have.
I'm just kind of content with
texting.
We talk, literally, from when we
wake up to when we go to sleep,
and it's throughout
the entire day.
>> I let it go and let it go
until that's all he was doing.
>> We were always there for each
other.
We were both going through
hard times.
>> What was going on?
>> I was going through
depression.
Wrestling wasn't panning out
like I thought.
>> He failed a class,
and he hit the locker.
So he got the boxer's fracture,
and we had to go get surgery
and everything,
so he couldn't wrestle.
>> Oh.
>> I actually only got to
wrestle four matches.
I devoted my life to wrestling,
and I just broke down
because of that.
Lost interest in school.
Just didn't care about anything
anymore.
At a point, I thought about
suicide.
>> * Don't *
* Don't you let me down *
* Fall
>> Samm, she helped me
quite a lot.
>> * Fall to the battleground
* Run through the arrows
* Let the reins fall
* Behind you
>> I kind of brought myself
out of this deep hole
because I wanted to
make my life better for her
'cause I see her in my future.
>> * [vocalizing]
>> What does your future look
like right now?
>> Right now, I actually wanted
to move in with her
to California
to help support her.
>> It doesn't look like your mom
knew about your plan
until right now.
>> She did not.
>> His plans keep changing
on me.
He went to the naval recruiter.
He was gonna join the Navy.
He was gonna go--
>> Did that wash out
because of Samm?
>> I didn't want to have to be
apart from her.
I don't want her to be alone
and have to struggle.
She'd have to pay for everything
by herself.
>> And so you would go there
and get a job
and--and support her?
>> Yes.
>> It's very chivalrous.
>> He's making life decisions
according to what may happen
with her.
>> Have you never Skyped with
her or video chatted with her?
>> We've never successfully
video chatted.
It never worked out.
Like, the connection was bad.
>> Has she sent you any pictures
directly to you?
>> She sent me a few pictures,
but the majority of the time,
it's just pictures that she has
on Facebook or Instagram.
>> I don't want him to fall
again,
like he did last year.
>> Samm only wants the best
for me.
I've probably never been closer
to someone than I am with her.
Uh, she--
[chuckles]
Other than my family,
other than my mom.
>> All right, all right.
What I'm realizing now more than
before is that you don't have
a problem with Samm.
She can be a part of
the plan but not...
>> both: The plan.
>> Can we high-five?
>> Right. Okay, high five.
So I'd like to just see
what Samm looks like
and get a feel for this girl
that you're in love with.
Okay, here we go.
Wow, so...
>> Gwen Stefani.
>> Quite a lady.
>> She's pretty.
>> I got lucky.
>> Well, you don't know
what you got yet.
We've taken this conversation
as far as we can.
>> We're gonna go do what we do.
>> Thank you, guys.
>> Thank you.
>> This is a great story.
>> This is really interesting.
>> We should do more
parent-child Catfish.
I think she called us because
she doesn't know how to properly
handle it.
>> At this point, I've seen
a little too much to say
that I think she's her.
>> What hangs in the balance
is his future,
and if he doesn't figure
this relationship out now,
he might make a bad decision.
>> Come into my room.
All right, let's get the notepad
ready.
Here's a pen.
What do we know about Steven?
He was a hopeless romantic.
>> He met this girl...
>> both: Samm.
>> But she strangely won't
video chat with Steve.
His mom's concerned about him.
He's about to be a high school
graduate.
And right now, he's totally
wrapped up in this girl.
>> So he can't take a step
forward in his life until we
figure out this mystery.
>> We got an email from Steve,
Samm's info.
>> Samm with two Ms?
That's a fake name
if I ever heard one.
>> Here's her Twitter.
Check that out.
>> A lot of selfies
and mirror pics.
>> A lot of mirror pics.
Pittsburg--
>> both: Pittsburg
Wrestling Tournament.
>> Wow, "Queen of the Mat."
There's a ton of wrestling
videos.
>> Let's see.
>> No way.
>> A hot wrestling girl.
>> I just can't tell that--
if it's her or not.
Wow.
>> I wouldn't want to get
in a fight with this girl.
>> I would--no.
Oh, she posted it.
Look, she's got
a YouTube channel.
>> Oh, she's got a YouTube
channel.
>> That's already a really good
sign, if that's her.
>> Well, but that means that
she's not video chatting
with him for a reason.
>> Which is weird.
What is she hiding?
Is this Steve?
Oh, [bleep].
She retweeted Steve's tweet
that says, "It's amazing how one
person you just met a few months
ago can turn into the most
important person in your life."
>> That's a big deal.
That is a public display.
>> Everything, so far, is
pointing us in the direction
that Samm is the girl
in the pictures.
I think we gotta reach out
to some friends.
>> Yeah.
>> Here she is,
and she tags a guy.
Here's his--see,
"Happy birthday, you stud."
>> Not a lot on his page.
>> Hmm.
>> We found--
>> We should just send him
a message.
>> Let's just send him
a message, right.
>> We gotta see if she's got
a boyfriend.
>> "Hey, Erick, my name is Nev.
We are actually on a case right
now that may involve one of
your close friends.
Please call me when you can.
Cheers, Nev."
>> All right.
>> Send.
Should we reach out
to another friend?
>> I'm just gonna play the part
of Max, while you do
the hard work.
[cell phone rings]
>> Oh, you're getting a phone
call from Hanford, California.
>> That's--that's Erick.
All right, here.
Hey, is this Erick?
Hey, Erick, how are you doing?
It's Nev from Catfish.
We are curious to know a little
bit more about your friend
Samm.
How do you guys know each other?
I have a phone number that I
believe to be hers, if you
could just confirm that it is.
It's a 559 [bleep].
>> So how good of friends was
Samm with Jasmine?
Oh, cool.
Yeah, text it to us.
This has been really, really
helpful, so thank you.
All right, later, man.
>> She shared a phone.
>> Well, hold on a second.
>> This is the big news.
>> This could be the big--
>> This is the--She shared a
phone with a girl, Jasmine.
>> Missing piece.
>> And maybe Steve has been
talking to Jasmine.
>> Oh, look, bam.
There are some more tweets.
"That moment you get a message
that seems hella cute,
but you check and it's really to
your best friend..."
>> both: "That account
is linked."
>> Hold on a second.
You can actually share a Twitter
account with someone.
Samm could have been signed in
to her friend's account.
Jasmine thought she got
a really cute message,
but it wasn't actually for her.
It was a message for her friend
Samm.
>> Let's look at Jasmine's
Twitter.
>> Here is Jasmine.
>> "Don't judge what I look like
today.
I look foul today.
I feel I'm almost hitting
the bottom, and it effing sucks.
>> She does have some self-image
issues.
>> "I woke up this morning.
I'd rather be home and cry
than be at school and feeling
tears down my face."
>> She's going through
some stuff.
>> She sounds a lot more like
the sad...
>> Right.
>> Twitter personality
that Steve originally reached
out to.
>> Right, yeah.
>> Jasmine, she's, like, really
struggling with something.
>> "It's a serious struggle to
sleep at night."
>> That's what happens when
you're living with a lie.
>> Theory one...
>> Okay.
>> Samm is Samm but...
>> Right.
>> Doesn't want to video chat
and doesn't want to get too
close to Steve at least,
like, visually.
Theory two, Steve actually has
been talking to Jasmine
this whole time.
>> But before we go any further,
we need to talk to Steve
'cause he might have
a key piece of information
that might unlock
this whole mystery.
>> The cut-and-dried case is
no longer so cut and dry.
It's complicated.
>> Mom can slide in.
We can sit.
So we've got some interesting
things that we found.
We've got some questions that
we're trying to answer.
Hopefully some of this
will make sense,
and maybe you can be the key
to unlock this mystery.
>> Okay.
>> I'm nervous.
>> The first thing we did
was we went through
her Twitter page, okay?
>> That's where he met her.
>> It seems like a real page...
>> Right.
>> Posted by a real girl.
>> From what we can tell.
The next thing we did
was just searched Samm,
and right away,
the first thing that came up
was a YouTube channel.
All of her fights are up here.
It's hard to see her face.
There's no, like, perfect,
crystal clear moment.
>> Where is she?
>> She's in the black, I think.
That seems to indicate she's
been telling you the truth.
Do you think you would want to
wrestle her?
>> Yeah, that would be crazy.
>> This girl could take you.
>> [laughs]
>> What are the chances that you
found--I don't know, maybe there
are a lot of beautiful girls
that wrestle.
>> Right.
>> Right? That's what I think.
>> No, I mean, it's a find.
>> It's very rare
that we get this far
into an investigation
and have all signs point to
the story checking out
and the girl being the girl
in the pictures.
>> I'm just happy, you know?
Everything checks out, so this
seems like good news.
>> But there's still a little
bit more to talk about.
>> There's still a little a fly
in the soup.
>> Okay.
>> I knew it.
>> One thing that we thought was
interesting was this tweet,
which is back from July.
"That moment you get a message
that seems hella cute
but you check and it's really to
your best friend..."
>> both: "That account
is linked."
>> What does it mean?
I don't--
>> Good question.
When was it that you guys
started talking?
>> Around that time.
>> This was the first thing that
got our antennas perky.
So here's this guy, Erick.
We sent him a quick message.
He called us.
He knows Samm.
She's Samm.
She wrestles.
Totally checks out.
The only thing is, he said
"I remember at one point
Samm was sharing her phone
with her best friend, Jasmine."
Do you know about Jasmine?
Is that a person in Samm's life?
>> Never heard--
>> She never talked about
someone named Jasmine?
>> No.
>> Maybe Jasmine was using
the phone and went on Twitter
and saw a message and was like,
"Oh, that's so sweet,"
and then realized, oh, I'm
signed in to the wrong account.
Jasmine may have been signed in
to Samm's account,
then given you her number,
which you, of course, thought
was Samm's number.
And then you guys went off
Twitter, and Samm never even
really paid attention
or noticed it.
>> Yeah, that actually does
kind of make sense,
'cause if she doesn't want to
show me her face on video chat--
>> So we went to her Twitter,
and here's Jasmine.
>> You've never seen her before?
>> I've never seen her.
>> You've never seen this girl,
right?
>> You've never seen her in
pictures with Samm?
>> I've never seen that girl
in my life.
>> We see a lot of tweets
from Jasmine,
and she doesn't seem to be
terribly happy
and is a little kind of insecure
about the way she looks,
and she feels ugly.
>> He said she tweeted something
depressing...
>> Right.
>> And that's why he messaged
her.
Maybe Jasmine's the one who
posted that depressing message.
>> When I talk to Samm,
every time she has a problem,
it sounds this depressing.
You know, she--she says stuff
that--she's, like, a mess
right now.
>> Then it starts to seem like
maybe there's a chance
you could actually be talking to
her friend Jasmine that has
very low self-confidence
and doesn't want to show you
who she really is,
A, because...
she's been lying, and, B,
because she doesn't think
you'll find her attractive.
>> That does make sense.
>> How would you feel if that--
that were the case?
>> It kinda hurts.
But if it does turn out to be
this Jasmine girl,
there's still that emotional
connection that we have.
>> I don't know.
That's starting it out as a lie,
because he doesn't even know
her real name.
I don't see how he could look at
her and say,
"Oh, you're the one."
>> If I can just see who
I've actually been talking to,
I'd be a lot happier.
>> Let's send a picture
of the three of us.
>> Okay.
>> And just say, "Hey,
I'm with the guys.
They'd love to talk to you.
If they call, will you answer?"
>> Okay.
>> Okay, how was it?
>> Okay, that's good.
>> I know this is crazy,
but you're about to get
a phone call from Nev.
Do you think you could answer
a call?
>> Oh, my God.
>> Oh!
>> "Yes, I will answer!"
All I'm gonna try and do is get
her to agree
to let us come and meet her
this weekend.
>> Okay.
>> I'm gonna go call her.
I'll be right back.
>> Are you scared?
>> I am scared.
[phone line rings]
>> [clears throat]
Hi, it's Nev.
Is this Samm?
Thanks for getting on the phone.
I'm down here in Texas
with Steven, and we're sort of
at this place now
where we realized it was time to
reach out
and start to get your side of
the story and see if
maybe sort of taking it to the
next level is something you
would be interested in doing.
>> Um...
>> Yeah, we could do that
this weekend.
There is something Steven needs
to know.
This would be, obviously,
a great opportunity
to tell him that.
>> I am looking forward to
meeting you.
Okay, bye.
I just got off the phone
with Samm.
>> Was it Samm?
>> I don't know.
I didn't question.
I just wanted to have
a nice call.
And there was one
awkward moment.
She's like, "Look, there's
definitely something
I need to tell him
that I haven't told him.
I'd like to do that in person."
>> Okay.
>> But for the most part, we're,
like, thumbs-up.
And we can go, like, tomorrow,
and she's down to meet us
this weekend.
>> [gasps] Really?
>> Okay.
>> Wow.
>> * We will all be born again
>> That's amazing news.
>> I'm nervous.
>> * When the winter days
* Are dead
>> Are you still now, like,
100% for sure
this is what you wanna do?
>> Yes, this is 100%
what I want to do.
>> Can we bring the lovely
Aurora?
>> Wait.
Do you want to come with us?
>> Yes, I want to go.
>> Is that okay?
Is it cool if Mom comes with us?
>> Yeah.
>> Well, then I think
we should all go.
>> Oh, yeah.
It's a family affair.
>> [laughs]
Oh, gosh.
>> I just want to leave.
>> Wow, I can't believe
we're all going to Cali.
>> Whoo!
>> All right, bye.
>> Bye.
>> See you all tomorrow.
>> Get some sleep.
>> All right, I'll try.
>> * Don't forget *
* About the stars
* The sky
>> It could be Jasmine,
or it could be Samm.
>> * In the quiet of nothing
* To the hands of grace
* Don't delete my baby *
>> This whole time, do you have
it in your mind that it's gonna
be Samm?
>> Yeah. Yeah, pretty much.
>> You should seriously consider
that this might not be Samm.
>> It's just my gut feeling.
>> Look at that,
wheeling his mom's bag.
>> He's my baby.
I love him.
>> * Just let it all out
>> Ugh.
>> * To find
>> Yeah, this is a big, big
thing for me right now.
Yeah.
>> It'll be okay.
>> Yes.
>> * Just let it all out
>> Let's do it.
>> * Everything is starting
* To wake
>> Aurora, how you feeling?
>> Excited.
Worried about the secret.
'Cause my mind's going crazy
about what that could be.
>> [chuckles]
Destiny awaits.
The one with the open garage.
>> It's open.
>> My heart's definitely beating
a lot harder and faster
than it was.
[exhales sharply]
I'm ready.
>> It's a little rainy,
so come--why don't we all go in?
Here we go.
[knocking on door]
>> Calm down, bud.
>> [mouths words]
>> Lot of sounds.
[door opens]
>> Hi.
>> Hi.
>> Nev.
>> Hi. Samm.
>> Good to meet you.
>> You too.
>> Hi.
>> Hi.
[laughs]
>> Uh...
>> Hi, Samm.
>> * All my life
* I've done you right *
>> Hi.
[laughs]
>> You're even more beautiful
than I thought you'd be.
>> Thank you.
>> We're certainly all
surprised that it's you.
We weren't sure exactly
what to expect.
>> You look like your picture.
>> How are you feeling
right now?
>> I'm nervous, oh, my God.
Like, I can't believe
this is real.
>> I know.
I don't really know what to say.
>> Like, I feel like I'm
dreaming or something.
>> Well, you guys haven't really
met yet.
You should meet each other.
I mean--
>> Yeah. We have the same nails.
>> Yeah, I noticed.
Look at that.
I mean, that's, like, amazing.
Look at this.
From what we understand,
you're a wrestler.
>> Mm-hmm.
>> Is that still something that
you're doing?
>> Yeah, I'm gonna wrestle
in college.
>> Which is awesome.
>> Yeah, and I want to be
a wrestling coach, so...
>> We've seen some of your
videos, and you--I wouldn't want
to mess with you.
>> Oh, yeah, you don't want to.
[laughter]
>> I'm, like, kind of waiting
for the other shoe to drop
or something.
>> We were a little freaked out
because we found some
information out about you
and your friend Jasmine.
Is that someone that you're
still close with?
>> Yeah, yeah.
>> We heard some story that you
guys were, like, sharing a phone
at one point.
But there was never any point
where Steven was interacting
with Jasmine, was there?
>> No, no, not at all.
>> No.
>> All me.
>> I, 1,000%, was sure that
that was the case.
W--I mean, I gotta know.
What's the secret?
>> My thing that I had to tell
you is just that
during when we were talking,
like, I dated people.
I mean, it went on a lot longer
than I said it was.
The other people, they're, like,
completely just cut now,
and I'm kind of just focused
on him.
And that's just my big thing.
I mean, I'm real.
My feelings are real.
Everything's real.
I mean, that's just the only
thing I have to say.
I'm sorry for lying and stuff,
keeping that.
>> Okay, well, that's a big
deal.
>> Mm-hmm.
>> 'Cause I know that for
the past, at least, few months,
Steve's been really
focused on you...
>> Yeah.
>> And hasn't been dating
anybody.
>> It's kind of hard because
I just wasn't sure yet
'cause we haven't met yet...
>> Right.
>> Basically.
>> I do feel hurt about that.
Hey, as long as the other guy's
out of the picture--
>> Yeah.
>> [laughs]
That's the thing about Steven.
>> Right.
>> He's--he's so gung ho
for you, you know?
>> [laughs]
>> He's, like--he'll forgive
anything right now.
>> Aw. Yeah.
>> Right, right now.
>> That's what worries me
because I don't want...
>> [laughs]
>> The whole "playing with his
heart" kind of thing.
>> Yeah, I know.
That's not my intentions,
though.
>> 'Cause I'm happy
if he's happy.
>> It was actually Aurora that
wrote in to the show.
>> Thank you.
>> She was, obviously,
the greatest skeptic.
>> Oh, my gosh.
>> She's looking out
for her kid.
>> Yeah, 'cause if you spent
time texting him, you know how
him and I are, right?
>> Yeah.
>> He's probably told you.
We're really close, so...
>> Yeah, I've heard.
>> It's tough for mothers to see
their--their sons in
love?
>> [laughs]
>> We do have to talk about
our future together.
>> He's been excited,
looking to the future,
and making plans
for you and him.
And he wants to be part of
your plans.
>> Yeah.
>> But he's even been willing to
sort of ignore his own...
>> Yeah.
>> Future plans...
>> Yeah.
>> To come be with you.
>> I mean, I want you to do best
for what's in your future,
me to do best for what--
I mean, yeah, just realistic.
>> Will you give this guy a hug?
He's shaking.
Just help calm him down
a little bit?
>> I am shaking.
>> Are you okay?
>> I'm fine. I'm just happy.
You know, I can't really take
my eyes off of you.
>> Aw.
>> All right, so look, you guys
should hang out, and we'll--
we'll see you in a little bit.
>> All right.
I appreciate it, guys.
>> Yeah.
Did you want to have a second
with Steven?
Do you need to say anything to
him privately?
>> No, I don't. He's good.
>> No? Okay.
He's good.
>> I taught him well.
>> All right, you kids have fun.
>> All right.
>> I don't know her too well,
but from what I get, she's real
cool, calm, and collected.
>> She's--she's cool.
>> But she has a poker face
right now.
>> Yeah, yeah.
She does have a poker face.
She's a little standoffish
right now.
>> No, don't.
>> I like your shoes, though.
I didn't--I see other people
wearing 'em, but--
>> [laughs]
>> It's so unreal.
>> Mm.
>> Yesterday I was in Texas.
Now I'm sitting next to you.
It was actually her.
I actually got to talk to
this girl face-to-face
that I have been talking to
through texts for the past
seven, eight months.
And I can't stop talking,
I can't stop thinking about her.
Like, it's--it's just so much
more amazing than I could have
ever imagined.
And she was so much beautiful--
more beautiful than I thought
she was.
I want to say I--
[exhales sharply]
All right, I'm just gonna
calm down.
[upbeat music]
>> Gotta check in with Steve,
see how everything went
yesterday.
Think they got to first base?
>> Well, it would be a wrestling
term.
>> Did he pin her?
>> Did he pin her?
>> Right.
>> She probably pinned him.
>> Let's see how it went.
[knocking on door]
>> Hey, guys.
>> Yo.
Oh, he's got a girl over.
We should go. We should go.
>> Whoa.
>> He's got a girl over.
>> She's on the bed.
>> Hey, Mom.
>> Hi.
>> So how did it go?
>> Yeah, give us the scoop.
>> We just sat there, talked.
I felt pretty comfortable
around her.
I felt like I've known her
for a lot longer than a day.
There is that feeling of...
[sighs]
She lied to me, you know.
She's--she was talking to some
other guys,
which I'm--I'm kind of
just trying to get rid
of those feelings.
I'm just having a lot of
conflicting emotions right now.
>> Welcome to adulthood.
>> Yeah.
[laughter]
You know, there's definitely
something I'm gonna have to
deal with and talk to her about.
>> I just have to say
his actions will speak louder
than his words, you know?
>> She wanted to hang out with
me at the Superior Ice Cream
shop.
>> Okay.
Mom, I think yesterday it was
great that you were there.
>> Mm-hmm.
>> But today, I'm not sure they
need, you know, a chaperone.
>> No, they don't.
>> So maybe you'll sit this one
out...
>> Yeah.
>> And we'll let these young
lovebirds--
>> Eat ice cream.
Bye.
>> Bye, Mom.
>> Bye, Son.
Have fun.
>> I don't think I'm gonna find
anybody else like this.
So I just want us to be on
the same page.
>> Right.
What's important is that you
tell her exactly how you feel.
You don't have to sweep anything
under the rug.
If you feel mixed up, I think
it's fair to tell her that you
feel mixed up.
Hello.
>> Hello.
>> Hey, Samm.
>> Hi.
>> How are you?
>> Good.
>> That's good.
>> Why don't you guys hang out?
See you in a little bit.
>> All right.
I like your outfit.
>> Thank you.
>> So this whole time,
you were talking to other guys
while you were talking to me.
>> I mean, yeah,
talking to other guys,
and, you know,
that's basically it.
>> I'd ask you,
"Am I the only one?"
You lied to me and said you
weren't talking to anyone else
and I was the only one.
>> That was bad on my part,
but I just thought I was doing
what was the smartest thing to
stay away from hurting you,
I guess.
I don't know.
There's just not really
an explanation for lying at all.
You were always so sweet to me,
and, like, I know you're
a really good guy,
and that's honest.
That's honest.
Like, you're one of the best
guys, like, I've ever met
in my life.
And that's all true.
>> What about the future?
Do you--do you think you could
see a future with us together?
>> Over texting, I felt like
we were heading, like, towards
a relationship maybe.
So now I just feel like
the connection is kind of
different.
In a way, I still feel like the
connection, like, we've always
had as friends and stuff
and we can talk all day
and we can do whatever.
It's just that--
just the friend connection I
feel in person really.
>> So you don't have feelings
for me?
>> I just--I don't know.
Like, I have feelings for you,
like, as, like, a best friend.
[solemn music]
*
>> What about when we text?
I definitely felt like we
were in a relationship
with all the cute nicknames
and all the little messages
we'd send each other.
Do you--do you still feel
the same way?
>> If--I don't know.
I just feel--Honestly?
In person, we're strangers.
So it's just weird to connect
the two after, like,
such a long time.
>> * I can see
* For miles
>> I know I don't want
a relationship anytime soon.
I just want to go to college,
wrestle, get my degree,
and then try and figure out
what I want to do with my life
and my career.
So, you know, I'm not thinking
relationship-wise.
I'm not thinking any of that
type of stuff for the future
now.
>> I don't really see a point of
me being in your life then.
[sighs]
>> * Open
* Smiling
* Reach out
*
* That's all right *
* I decline
*
>> This episode of
Catfish: The TV Show
continues now.
>> * Heart beats
>> What happened?
>> * Slowly
>> She basically just told me
she doesn't need me.
[sniffles]
>> * Living off
* Your memories
>> I said, "If you want to just
focus on your own life,
I don't see a point of me
being your friend."
>> * Victims
* Hurting
* Bound by flaws
>> I'm done.
>> * And cursing
* Soldiers
>> At least now you know.
>> [sniffles]
Yeah.
I can stop wasting my time.
>> I'm gonna go just check in
with her quickly.
*
Hey.
Okay.
Um, Steve's a little bummed.
>> Yeah, I'm sure.
I understand.
>> Yeah.
>> I thought I wanted romantic
things with him.
But this is what I was waiting
for, to see if it was still
a romantic connection at all,
but it's not.
Like, I only feel like I could
be friends with him.
I mean, I would like him to be
in my life,
and I'll be there for him,
but if he just wants it all,
then that's just--
I can't give it to him.
>> She's not the person
I thought I wanted.
>> You deserve someone who is
going to appreciate
all the things that you do
and the kind of person you are.
>> I feel like he was just so
blinded with his own, like,
being 100 in it,
that he didn't get I was trying
to tell him it's not for sure.
He didn't get the signs I was
trying to tell him
that I don't know yet.
He just brushed that off
and just focused on,
we're gonna have a future.
>> Right.
>> We're gonna have
a relationship.
And I do feel bad about it,
but I'm just--
I'm just--just trying to be real
about it.
It just upsets me that
he can just say, like,
"Why am I even gonna bother
being in your life?"
He deserves better.
>> I just don't want to see you
now go home
and go down into a spiral
of getting depressed.
>> No, I'll--I'll get through
it.
It'll take some time, but I'm--
I'm gonna get through it.
>> Of course you will.
>> I'm sure there are more
beautiful girls that wrestle.
[chuckles]
>> Let's get outta here.
>> * I'm living on the moon *
* I guess
* Don't understand a word *
* You said
>> Are you glad that we came?
>> Yeah.
I'm gonna learn something
from this, and that's--
that's what I'm trying
to focus on.
>> Not getting the girl,
in this case,
meant getting something
way more valuable.
>> * And the price I paid
>> You realized you've been
putting her before you,
that now it's time to really
focus on what's best for you.
*
[line ringing]
>> Yo!
>> Hey!
How you doing?
>> I'm doing pretty well.
>> And?
How is Samm?
>> We don't send cute messages
and all that anymore,
but we still talk to each other
from when we wake up to when
we go to sleep every day.
>> Wow, so you guys are still in
really close contact.
>> Yeah.
>> So are you guys--you're just
friends now?
>> Yeah.
>> Wow.
>> Nice.
And how's your mom?
>> She just got home from work.
>> Bring her in.
Aurora.
>> Hey, how's your son?
He says he's doing okay.
>> He's doing good.
>> Steve, are you and Samm
planning on meeting up?
>> Yes.
Next Wednesday she's coming.
>> What?
>> Whoa!
>> Yeah, for about six days.
>> Oh, my God.
>> Whoa.
>> Mom, is--whoo!
>> Open door policy.
>> Open door?
>> Are you looking forward to
a possibility of something
happening during those six days?
>> Who knows what could happen?
>> That's exciting.
That's really cool.
I'm glad to hear everything is
working out.
>> Yeah.
>> both: Bye.
[line rings]
>> Hi, how is everything?
>> Everything's really good now.
I almost lost Steven
for a second there through
the "just being friends" thing,
