Big Sky (1997–1999): Season 1, Episode 13 - Sweet Revenge - full transcript

(Gentle music) (Rotors whirring)

- Polaroids?

- Yeah, you use it to check
the framing and light.

(Camera clicks)

(Gentle music) (Rotors whir)

We'll have to go around
a few more times.

(Rotors whir)

(Suspenseful music)

(Rotors whir) (Suspenseful music)

Just hold it there.

Thank you, driver.

- You got any binoculars in the house?

- Yeah.

- And the verdict is?

(Camera clicks)

- Once more ought to do it.

- If that's the place they're selling,

imagine what they're moving into.

(Lexie chuckles)

(Suspenseful music)

- Vhazh.

Find out who that belongs to,

who they are, and what
they're doing here.

- Okay.

(Suspenseful music)

- And...

If they're a threat,

you deal with it.

I don't want to know about it.

(Suspenseful music)

(Emotional music)

- [Chris] Morning.

What's going on?

- Somebody broke in last night.

- So, what's missing?

- Nothing.

It's ridiculous.

They seem to have left everything.

- What about the planes?

- Ronnie's still checking,
but he says they're fine.

(Door clicking) (Suspenseful music)

(Engines humming)

Police said there's
nothing more I could do,

so we may as well get going.

I'm looking forward to this weekend.

- Oh, Harry, this is Chris
manning, our chief pilot.

This is...

- Yeah, I know, I know.

It's great to meet you.

I've read your book.

(Bright music)

- People betting their lives away

and their children's
education, everything.

There's my father just
taking it all from them.

It's so cruel.

- It wasn't up to him
to be their conscience.

Can't afford to lose, you
shouldn't sit down at the table.

Ah, come on, what is this?

What happened to the
girl who squared off

against peewee abbott?

- What'd she do?

- Don't you dare.

- Ah, she couldn't have
been more than eight.

She sat across the table from
peewee in these dinky pajamas

and bluffed the shirt off his
back with a pair of fours.

I've never forgotten it.

Ah, shooter was so proud,

you'd think she won the nobel prize.

- Very impressive.

- Hey, you, face the front.

(Gentle music)

- Jimbo.

Jimbo! - Leave me alone.

- There're some people here to see you.

- G'day.

Is there news on the break-in?

- We just want to ask
you a few questions.

- About what?

- We'd like to know what a
chopper belonging to big sky

was doing out at point Piper yesterday.

- Can I see some I.D.?

Did you make those yourself?

- This chopper was seen at
point Piper around noon

and someone was seen to be
taking photographs from it.

We'd like to know why.

- We were hired to take
photos for a real estate ad.

It's not illegal to take photos, is it?

- What's the name of the photographer?

- Lexie ciani.

She's a pilot here.

She takes all our photos.

- Can we speak to her?

- She's on a job.

She'll be back tomorrow.

- Then we'll be back tomorrow.

- Any time, guys.

(Engines humming)

- [Harry] He just stood
up from the table,

plopped it out of his
hat, and gave it to me.

Hell of a game, that's all he said.

Hell of a game.

I busted him out after
15 hours straight.

- So, this is your
good luck charm, then.

- No, don't believe in luck, son.

But it is my most prized possession.

Johnny costo was a
legend, best I ever saw.

- Yeah, but luck's gotta play a part.

- Let me tell you something.

Poker's about character, not luck.

Your character gets stripped
bare at the poker table.

If the other players
can read you better

than you can read yourself,

they'll take you to the
cleaners every time.

- Chapter five.

Play the man, not the cards.

- Yep.

If you can read your opponent's tells,

you can beat him no matter what.

Some people might, you know,

chew their lip or fold their arms

or scratch an ear, so many things.

If you can pick the other guy's tells,

you can beat him.

For instance, I can tell that Lauren

hasn't done much flying before.

- What's the tell?

- Well, number one,

she fidgets her shoulders
when she's nervous.

There you go.

Number two, she keeps
checking the instruments,

even though we're only cruising.

But most importantly,

she told me just before
we got on the plane.

(Dramatic music)

(Cards flicking)

(Dramatic music)

- Well, look at this.

- Mad dog mooney.

What do you reckon?

- You're not.

- Hey, I read his book.

I can't lose.

- Yes, you can.

- I was being ironic.

Excuse me.

(Lauren laughs)

(Gentle music)

- And I'll see you.

- [Dealer] Pair of fives.

Three aces wins.

(Gentle music)

(Quiet suspenseful music)

- Hi.

What's wrong?

(Quiet suspenseful music)

Your house, too.

This is getting weird.

- [Harry] Enjoying yourself?

- Mm, I am, Harry.

Please take your time.

- For you.

Shooter sent them to me.

We used to send them to each
other from all over the place.

Turned into a bit of a tradition.

He wrote about you mostly, so...

- Well, thanks, that's so nice.

- I kept them all this time

because I thought one day you
would like to have them.

- Thank you.

He was really fond of you.

- Yeah.

He was pretty special, the old shooter.

Well, gotta get going.

See you later.

- [Chris] Harry, how you doing?

- You can stick a fork
in me, because I'm done.

- You busted out, too?

- Yeah, see what I mean
about good luck charms?

You can't rely on them.

- Tell me about it.

200 grand.

Wouldn't have been me.

- You hung in a lot longer
than some of us pros

that do it for a living.

That's not bad.

- So, what are you gonna
do, go back to Sydney?

- No, no, the fun starts now.

The real action of these tournaments.

Now, the satellite games
the high rollers set up

after they busted out,

this is the business.

I've got a few starters
coming to my room

in about an hour or so for a game.

Why don't you stop by?

- I don't see a need to
confiscate any of these.

- So, what's all this, then?

- [Taller henchman]
We had to make sure.

- Sure of what?

- It's a very sensitive matter.

If you need to contact the police

about your break-in or anything
to do with these folders,

make sure you call us.

- Oh, so they're related?

- We're not certain yet.

(Man clicks tongue)

- I still say they're not real police.

- [Lexie] So, who are those guys?

- Look, I told you.

We went over them with
a fine-tooth comb.

They're nearly all of
the house next door.

The ones with the meeting, you
can't make out any detail.

There's no way it can get back to you.

- You sure you saw all
the photos they had?

- If they're gonna hide
any shots from us,

they have to know what
we're looking for.

- And?

- No way.

They're completely in the dark.

- You'd better be right.

- There you are.

Come on. Come in.

I'll introduce you to everyone.

- Hey, hey, Harry.

This looks a bit serious.

- Don't worry, they're
laughing on the inside.

- [Chris] What's the ante?

- Well, at the moment, it's really low.

Just for fun.

Don't worry.

I'll let you know if you look
like getting the strike.

Come on.

(Cards flicking)

- [Ian] Lauren Allen.

- [Lauren] Yes?

- I thought it was you.

Ian Drake.

I was a friend of your father's.

- Oh, Ian, yeah, hi.

Gosh, I haven't seen you in years.

- I was so sorry to hear about Duncan.

- Thank you.

You're here for the
tournament, of course.

- Oh, what on earth brings you here?

Don't tell me you've become a player.

- Oh, god, no.

No, I'm in the aviation business now.

I flew up here with Harry Quinn.

- Pleasure Harry?

- [Lauren] Yeah, that's right.

Something wrong?

- No, no, just a bit
surprised, that's all.

- Why?

- Well, Harry and your father...

- Ian, what are you talking about?

- He tried to pretend
everything was okay,

but you know how it is.

Word gets around.

We all knew that your father's
business was falling apart.

We stopped inviting him
to the big poker games.

I mean, we tried not to
make it obvious, but...

- Harry?

- Well, he knew your father
was nearly bankrupt,

but he still kept involving
him in high stakes games,

and he didn't soft-play
him at the table.

He went straight for the jugular.

It was terrible to watch.

I saw him take a least a quarter
million off your old man,

and that was just the games I was at.

- I don't understand.

Harry was one of dad's closest friends.

- Not at the end.

When your dad was in strife,

all Harry saw was blood in the water.

I had a go at him once.

Told him to leave Duncan alone.

He just laughed.

- Did someone try and tell dad?

- I did,

but he was a proud bloke.

He told me to mind me own business.

He wouldn't admit how bad
things had got for him.

Maybe he just didn't want to believe

his best friend could do that to him.

Anyway, I went overseas.

The next thing I heard, he had died.

I'm sorry, Lauren.

- First lesson of photography,

always hide your negs.

- They can't be cops.

Cops would have found 'em.

- Their badges looked real.

- Have you ever seen a cop badge?

- In the movies.

- Exactly.

I knew it.

I had a hunch those pigs
weren't kosher, and ah,

I was right.

- A hunch.

So, who do you think you are?

Kojak?

- No.

I've got a feeling for this.

A sixth sense that was
telling me something.

- So, who were those guys?

- The answer

is in those photos.

Lexie.

Lexie, print everything.

Everything we haven't seen before.

(Gentle music)

Whatever they wanted is right here.

What are we looking at?

I gotta think like cops think.

Don't look at the photo.

Look through it,

like a detective would.

- How's that?

- Keep an open mind.

Don't let the facts fit the story.

Or is it the story fit the facts?

- [Lexie] Well, look who it is.

- [Jimbo] Our guys.

So, they said they were there.

- [Lexie] Yeah, but the
question is who is this guy?

(Quiet suspenseful music)

- This is so cool.

- Cool?

What are you talking about?

What if they change their
minds and come after us?

- Oh, come after us?

Why would they do that?

- Well, how should I know?

- Come after us.

I wish you hadn't said that.

I'm gonna take another
run at the harbor

and check the place out again.

- What for?

- Well, if I knew that, I wouldn't go.

Have you got any scotch?

(Helicopter rotors whirring)

We've been looking at the wrong thing.

It's the boat, not the house.

(Helicopter rotors whirring)

Big sky, this is echo-whiskey-Victor.

- [Shay] Go ahead, echo-whiskey-Victor.

- Shay, could you tell
Lexie that my sixth sense

was right again?

- [Shay] Sorry?

- Tell her my hunch paid off.

She'll know what that means.

(Helicopter rotors
whirring) (Dramatic music)

Why can't you blow them up?

- Not the polaroids.

They'd just be all fuzzy pixels,

but if I had the neg shed.

- [Jimbo] What's that?

- The negative you peel of the back.

You can do great blow-ups from those.

- [Jimbo] What'd you do with them?

- [Lexie] I don't know.

I just tossed them away in
the back of the chopper.

Where are you going?

- I'll be back.

- [Chris] Hey, Lauren.

- Oh my goodness, you look dreadful.

How long since you've slept?

- I don't know.

I'm in one of those satellite games.

Been going all night.

I can't believe what's happening.

And guess who's winning?

A monster.

- Oh, dear, this is how it all begins.

- [Chris] I can't believe this.

These guys aren't so tough.

- [Lauren] Ah ha ha, are you listening?

Yes, they are.

- Well, Harry said he
wouldn't let me get

into too much trouble.

It's a buzz.

- Harry, you're playing with him?

- Yeah, who else?

- Be careful.

- What's wrong?

- Nothing.

- No, not nothing.

What?

- It's okay.

- Right, break for 20 minutes.

- Harry?

- Well, you got a mean
winning streak going there.

- I can't believe all this money.

I hate to do this.

I gotta pull out.

- What?

Tell me you're joking.

You can't walk out now.

You're on a roll.

- Look, I play Blackjack with pilots.

Half of them call it pontoon.

I feel like I'm flying without
a parachute feeding it.

- Well, I hate to see you do it.

My gut feeling is you could triple

what you're sitting on now

before you even start to get nervous.

- You're kidding.
- No.

There's a feel to every game.

Believe me, this game ain't
eating its children yet.

You've got the feel, haven't you?

(Gentle music)

Look, tell you what.

Stay for one more session.

Clean out a few more of these losers.

I'll give you the signal when to jump.

Okay?

(Gentle music)

- All right.

- [Harry] Lauren.

- We need to talk.

But you knew he was in trouble.

You knew he was losing money.

- I won money off your dad.

Sure, a lot of money,

but I won it fair and square.

- My god, fair?

How can you call that fair?

- He wanted to play, Lauren.

Don't make me out to
be the villain here.

Shooter was a gambler.

That's what he did.

I didn't make him that way.

- No, so you just bleed
him dry when he's down.

- I don't have to justify
myself to you or anybody.

- No, Harry, he wasn't just
some bag from out of town.

He was supposed to be your friend.

You could have tried to stop him.

- Others tried.

Ian Drake tried.

We could tell it wasn't
gonna do any good.

- Because...

Because you kept sucking him back in.

I mean, you could have
told him to slow down.

You could have stopped
inviting him to play.

- He still would have
found a way to lose.

Because in the end, that's
what he was, a loser.

Hadn't been to me, it would
have been to someone else.

I'm sorry about your old man, Lauren.

I liked him, I really did,

but he did it to himself.

And you've just got to
learn to live with that.

Why don't you take off?

I've got some poker to play.

(Gentle music)

- [Jimbo] So, who the
hell are these two?

- He's kind of cute.

- Yeah, isn't she?

(Quiet suspenseful music)

Do you think maybe she
did the break-ins?

(Gentle music)

- [Harry] What's it gonna be, Chris?

(Gentle suspenseful music)

- Ronnie.

- What?

- It's lissa Paige.

- Like, welcome to the planet.

It was on the news this morning.

- Murdered?

- Yeah, two days ago, they reckon.

They just found her body.

- It's her.

- Of course it's her.

Well, I better be getting back.

- Shay,

look at this.

These are the photos I
was telling you about.

Look.

- Oh my god.

- It's her, isn't it?

- Hey, look at her.

Do you think those boobs are for real?

- Shay.

- Well, of course it's lissa Paige.

No one else would look that gorgeous.

(Knocking on door)

- It's unlocked.

- I went down to the game and
they said you'd pulled out.

Congratulations.

- Thank you kindly.

- How much did you win?

- Well, I had $82,000.

- Had?

You blew it.

- Maybe I could get a job
as a pilot in Ethiopia.

I could get a lot of money there

because they're always being shot at.

Or I could retire.

Yeah, just sit on a park
bench drinking musket

out of a brown paper bag.

What do you reckon?

- Come on, it's not that bad.

- Oh, yes it is.

We got a problem with the transport.

- Something wrong with the plane?

- You could say that.

I

Lost the plane to...

(Bubbles blowing)

Ah!

- How can you lose a plane that
doesn't even belong to you?

- [Chris] I lost my head.

- I just can't believe this.

How do you bet a plane, anyway?

What do you throw into
the pot, a propeller?

- No, door keys and fuel keys.

- Oh, Chris, this is ridiculous.

- Well, that's what I reckon.

- Will you take this seriously?

I mean, out of all the
stupid stunts you pull, ah.

I just...

- Well, there must be
something we can do.

- Oh, oh, yeah, sure, great.

Oh, it's we now.

I mean, you lost the damn thing.

You work out how to get it back.

- Well, what do you
think I've been doing?

Sitting here doing nothing?

- I don't care what
happened at that table.

Harry does not own my plane.

Get down to the airfield and break in.

We're leaving.

- I already thought of that.

It's gone.

- Gone?

- Yeah, I went down to steal
it but it's not there.

- Oh, how could you be so stupid?

- Lauren, I had four queens.

I couldn't lose.

I was sitting there at
the table holding them,

and everyone was sitting
around smiling at me,

and then Harry bet the pot.

What could I do?

- You held four queens and you lost?

To what?

- Straight flush, eight high.

- Four queens beaten by a
straight flush in the same hand.

Do you know what the
odds against that are?

About 50 million to one.

You were rolled, mad dog.

(Gentle suspenseful music)

- No, this would go after this.

What's he doing?

- He's a muscly bastard, isn't he?

- [Lexie] What are they doing there?

- I think he's gonna kiss her.

- Then why hasn't she got
her arms around him?

(Gentle music)

- He had no right to bet it.

It's not legally his plane.

Do you understand?

- I understand.

I just don't care.

I've got it now, Lauren.

You don't like it...

Take me to court.

- You set him up.

Just like my father.

- That's a serious charge.

You go around saying things like that,

I hope you've got proof.

- Four queens and a straight
flush in the same hand?

- Extremely rare,

but not impossible.

- I'm not a sucker, Harry.

You and I both know what
really happened here.

- Yes, we do.

I won your plane.

- You bastard.

- [Jimbo] The question is
who's lissa's lover boy?

- Well, give me a look at him, then.

She's a babe, all right.

I can tell you who that is.

It's Terry bradshaw.

- That's Terry bradshaw?

- Yeah, the one and only.

Don't you guys know
anything about football?

- No - oh, it is, too.

The guy's got a wife and kids.

- Quick, Scotty, turn it up.

- With manslaughter and
supplying an illegal substance.

Solicitors for the
convicted drug dealer

said Mercer would vigorously
defend the charges.

Mercer claimed he had
not seen lissa Paige

any time in the past week.

- Who's Mercer?

- [Jimbo] Dunno.

Some crim.

Hey.

- They've got the wrong guy, jimbo.

- The answer has got to
be in these blow-ups.

(Gentle suspenseful music)

(Phone ringing)

(Gentle suspenseful music)

- How we looking?

- [Lauren] According to him,

possession is 10/10ths of the law.

- [Chris] Oh what a surprise.

- [Lauren] Well, I can't
see what we can do

except win it back.

- Lauren,

I know I've got no
right to offer advice.

You don't normally do
things this stupid.

- Oh, I can be stupid, too.

- Yeah, but you're not a natural.

You have to work at it.

- I'm not leaving here
without that plane,

and I'm gonna get that bastard.

Check with the casino.

You can get a dealer.

Tell them it's for Harry.

They always like to suck
up to the high rollers.

- Where are you going?

- I'm going shark hunting.

(Cards flicking)

- [Dealer] Your cards.

(Cards flicking)

You're first to speak, sir.

(Chips rattling)

How many cards, sir?

(Gentle suspenseful music)

- [Jimbo] The point is she died then.

And what's going on here?

I mean, they are fighting.

- Oh, so what, they had a fight.

Big deal.

That does not make him a murderer.

- But it doesn't make the
other guy a murderer.

I mean, why protect this guy, Scotty?

I mean, he's married and
he's half-naked on a boat

with lissa Paige.

What kind of a Saint's is that?

- Hey, all I'm saying to you is

if you take these to the cops,

then you'll ruin him.

I mean, this Mercer guy, okay, what?

He's a drug dealer, a stand-over man.

I've read about him and
he's a nasty piece of work.

I mean, if the cops
don't get him for this,

they'll get him for something else.

He's the criminal.

- Point is, he's innocent
this time, Scotty.

- We don't know that.

Just like we don't
know what's going on.

I mean, what you want to do,

you want to ruin the good guy

and want to let a criminal go free.

Is that what you want?

Is it?

- That's not fair, Scotty.

- No, but it's the truth.

Terry bradshaw is a hero.

We can't ruin him.

- We should give him the chance

to go to the cops by himself.

- Yeah, I guess.

(Chips rattling)

(Gentle suspenseful music)

- Call and raise.

- What's that?

- Registration papers for
the big sky chopper.

It's worth a lot more than the
plane you took off Chris,

but you bet that, and
we'll call it even.

If you throw in your feather.

- What?

You're crazy.

What do you want my feather for?

- Are you gonna call or not?

- Like father, like daughter.

You just don't know
when to quit, do you?

All right.

(Gentle suspenseful music)

I call.

- [Dealer] Full house.

- Yes.

- Queens over aces.

Mr. Quinn?

Three sixes.

Full house wins.

(Emotional music)

- [Director] Ah, Terry?

Can we go again, please, mate?

- [Terry] Sure.

- [Director] Thanks.

- So, Ricky, we give you this now,

and then by the time you get out,

you'll be able to play
with it, won't you?

Okay, excellent.

Look forward to that, I bet.

There you go.

- Hi, can I have an
autograph, too, please?

- [Terry] Sure, of course you can.

- Yeah, it's very impressive, Lauren.

That business with the shoulders.

You did it deliberately, didn't you?

- Yeah, apparently I do
it when I'm nervous.

- Yeah, and I guess I forgot
you were shooter's daughter.

- I guess.

- Yeah, well, I won't
make that mistake again.

- You won't get the chance.

- Oh, come on, you can't stop now.

You won your plane back.

We're even.

Time for some real poker.

- No thanks, Harry.

I got what I came for.

- Oh, don't walk away, Lauren.

You owe me the chance
to get my money back.

And that feather.

Darling, I'm talking serious money.

Come on.

You're the real thing,
just like your old man.

You know you want to do it, don't you?

- Goodbye, Harry.

(Engines humming)

- So, what are you gonna
do with the money?

- It's not much left after
you take the planes out.

Maybe just enough to get
my washing machine fixed.

Can I assume your days of
poker playing are over now?

- Cut it out.

After seeing an expert
like you at it...

- Oh, I'm warning you, mad dog.

- Yeah, okay.

Okay.

- Terry?

- Yeah.

- Hi.

I'm jimbo.

- How are ya.

- I'm a pilot from big sky.

- Oh, yeah.

- I wanted to talk to
you about lissa Paige.

- She just collapsed.

We'd had a bit of a fight.

She'd been doing coke all morning.

I really liked her, you know.

But she was...

Screwed up.

Depressed.

I tried to help her.

I really did.

- Yeah, but the point is
the cops have arrested

this guy called Mercer.

- I hope they hang that mongrel.

He's the one that's selling
her all this stuff.

- Yeah, but he wasn't
there when she died.

You were.

- Okay, look.

I'll tell you the truth.

I didn't kill her, but
I moved the body.

I panicked, okay.

I mean,

if she'd o.D.'D on my boat,

can you imagine what'd happen?

What it would do to
my career, my family?

- So, you're behind
the break-ins, then.

- Yeah, well, I just
looked at the chopper.

I mean, it wasn't hard to work out.

I just read the numbers on the side.

- So, who were those guys?

- What?

- So, these photos

could get that Mercer guy off.

(Gentle suspenseful music)

- You're not telling me
you'd turn those over

to help that piece of crap.

Listen, mate.

I am begging you.

I've got a lot of good things to do

like helping these kids.

Lissa Paige was just

one mistake in my life.

Don't crucify me for it.

Please.

(Gentle music)

I can't tell you how grateful I am.

- Do you have any copies?

- What?

- You're going to have to
hand them in to the cops.

- What do you mean?

- Well, I know he's a drug dealer

and he might be a serial killer
as far as I'm concerned,

but he's innocent.

- No, it's not.

- Oh, yeah.

(Gentle music)

- I understand my father better now.

It was so hard to walk away.

(Cards clicking)

(Emotional music)

(Stately jingle)
