Wicked Tuna: North vs. South (2014–…): Season 2, Episode 10 - Wicked End - full transcript

It's the final two days of the season, and three Southern boats -- the Fishin' Frenzy, the Reels of Fortune and the Doghouse -- are all within striking distance of the top spot. As the clock ticks down, the captains are desperate to put meat on deck. The stakes have never been higher: one pulled hook means disaster, but one last catch can mean going home a champion.

-DITA: Whoo-hoo!
-JESSIE: Let the fishing begin!

NARRATOR: On the season finale
of Wicked Tuna:

-Outer Banks...
-There he is!

Here we go! On the rod,

-a big one!
-Whoo!

NARRATOR:
With only two days left...

-We got a doubleheader.
-Yes!

NARRATOR:
In the bluefin season...

The bird was...
[makes whooshing sound]

NARRATOR: The Southern boats...

-Got him on!
-Oh, my God! Hurry up!

NARRATOR:
...battle for the top spot...

This will be 12 fish
for the season.

BRITTON: The Southern boys have
put it on 'em this year!

NARRATOR: ...and the pressure
is on to land a final giant.

Keeping our fingers crossed.

NARRATOR: Who will rise up?
And who...

Old school!

NARRATOR: ...will bottom out?

Now, that, that hurts.

-[reel unspooling]
-JARRETT: TJ! We're on!

TJ: Pa-pow!

NARRATOR:
In a highly regulated fishery

that's trying
to stay sustainable...

-BRITTON: Throw the dart!
-Need a big one!

We need a big, ol' boy!

NARRATOR: Every bluefin caught

takes a bite
out of the quota.

Yeah!

NARRATOR: And every fisherman
has to battle...

-[groans]
-...for their fair share.

[squeals and laughs]

It's gonna be a battle,
there's no doubt about it.

NARRATOR: This is
Wicked Tuna: Outer Banks.

With less than 48 hours
left to fish,

Southern boats Reels of Fortune
and Fishin' Frenzy

are neck-and-neck
in the earnings.

But Doghouse is still
within striking distance

of the top spot.

Meanwhile, Northern boats
Hot Tuna and Pinwheel,

and all-female trio Reel Action

are desperate
for a final paycheck.

CHARLIE: Got some north wind
this morning.

Looks like a pretty morning.

We got to catch us

-a tuna today, boy.
-We need it to survive.

Yeah, we got to catch us
some fish.

CHARLIE: This year,
we ran up on expense.

We burned a lot of fuel,

a lot of days we went,
we never saw a fish.

How about you, Renegade,
you ready?

We really need
a couple of more fish,

so we can make some money
for the season.

-Let's see if we can catch one.
-JAKE: Frenzy,

he's sitting
right here with us.

Ain't really
that big of a deal.

That's, that's not what
we're losing sleep over.

We're losing sleep over
if we're going to be able

to get out there
and catch another fish.

CHARLIE: Everybody's excited
about today.

JAKE: For us, the most
important thing is
making a paycheck.

It's not about
running your mouth at the dock

and telling everybody
how great you are.

MAN: Yes, sir. Let's go see
if we can catch something.

-JAKE: Yeah.
-GREG: We got to get out there
and catch some fish today.

'Cause I know Griff,
he's ready to catch 'em.
He's already left.

GREG: Griff's just a little bit
ahead of us right now.

He and I are neck-and-neck.
He's my toughest competitor.

We're going Frenzy style today.

BILLON: Winning this thing
is what it's all about.

If you're not the top boat,
you're nobody around here.

-Clear.
-NICK: I want to win
this competition

because the winner
makes the most money,

and I also want to win
because everybody wants to win.

MAN: You are clear to takeoff.

GREG: Up, up and away!

MAN: Yeah, man.

Make it count.

BRITTON: The Southern boys
have put it on 'em

-this year!
-CAINE: That's right.

BRITTON: We've been blessed
though, bud,
we'll take every one of 'em,

and thank you, Lord,
and roll with it.

It was the goal
at the beginning of the season.

It's the goal here at the end
of the season.

The one simple overriding goal,
meat on the dock.

MAN: Here we go.

CAINE: We're not far
behind these guys,

we can still pull
this thing out.

We're still in the race.

Should we redo the crimp?

We get one more fish,
it'd be really nice

to be somewhere there
close to the top,

and especially really nice
to get another paycheck.

MAN: Today's the day.

Feel it.

The north wind.

TJ: Our goal's
to come down here
and have a successful season,

especially after last year.

And this isn't
where we wanted to be.

Today could be our day,
so we just got to give it hell.

We've had major struggles.
It's been a nightmare for us.

And right now,
the nightmare continues.

MIKE: We only have two fish.
It's so important just to get
one more fish on this deck,

so the season won't be
a total bust.

TJ: Pa-pow!

The Hot Tuna's
already off the dock.

We got to get out of here!

Tyler and I both feel
today's the day.

-Let's get 'em. Come on.
-Tuna!

TYLER: I really wanted to beat
Greg this year.

But the most important thing
when we come fishing every time

is making money. And this year,
we've just been smoked.

We're the visitors and the home
team's kicking our ass.

All right, brother, I say we
untie these lines
and get out of here.

We really need one.

Everyone here does,
but especially us.

Let's get 'em, huh, Paul?

PAUL: Yeah, baby.

JAKE: Oh, man!

I don't know, boss.
I really don't know.

CHARLIE:
We're off to a slow start,

and it concerns me
because time's slipping away.

We're going to do
the best we can do,

and hopefully
before time's out,

we will have caught
one or two more fish.

GREG: There's two days left.
That's it.

-We're out of time.
-[beeping]

Some fish right here.

Four or five of 'em.

15 fathoms, 14 fathoms.

Come on, baby!

[beeping]

CHARLIE: That was a mark,
but it was a little fish.

It sure would be nice
to have another fish.

You know, we need one.

Another fish would just add

another couple grand
to each of our bank accounts.

And that's something
we really need right now.

[beeping]

[beeping]

-[reel unspooling]
-NICK: It's on!

-GREG: We're on!
-BILLON: Damn, there he is!

Whoo! Come on, baby.

GREG: Just stay on.

CHARLIE: Watch out, Renegade!

JAKE: We just hooked
a fish here.

Definitely going to be
a nice fish.

Definitely gonna be
a nice fish here.

This could be the one we've
been waiting for all year.

Hopefully, he's a stud bull.

500 or 600-pound fish would be
a good one right now.

CHARLIE: Come on, baby!

Oh, man, we finally got a bite!

NICK: Need a break?

-BILLON: Yeah.
-NICK: All right.

Slack! Real slack here, now.

-BILLON: Real slack on it.
-NICK: Turn away from him.

CHARLIE: I don't know
if he's still on here.

These things are not...

I swear. I don't know.

Is he on there?

Yes, he's on there.
Just let go of it, please.

JAKE: It is.

GREG: The fish is
a long ways away.

He's acting right now
like he's tail-wrapped.

[snaps]

ALL: No!

GREG: Damn it!
We pulled him off.

-NICK: No!
-BILLON: No bueno!

GREG:
We're running out of time.

We got to catch some fish now.

There we go, he's right there.

Grab this, grab this!

That's where
I think he's going.

Oh, come on. Please!

Please, don't do that to me!

Is he on there?

-JAKE: He's gone.
-Damn, God.

I'll tell ya, something's
broke.

JAKE: Lost him.

Got a bite and lost him, man.

Oh, man,
that was probably a good one,

'cause all the fish up here
have been better fish.

Oh, man, I'm about to vomit.

Now, that, that really hurts.

Warm up, baby.

The pressure of having
one bluefin and one paycheck

for the season came to a head
yesterday with me and Dita.

We're trolling!
We're going too fast!

-Four knots!
-I don't care what
the numbers are!

-Four knots!
-The baits are not staying

in the water, "Captain!"

TAMI: Dita and I have been
friends for 16 years.

This isn't the first time
we've butted heads,

and it's probably not gonna be
the last, either.

Try to keep that
a little closer

-while we're warming up.
-JESSIE: Yeah.

DITA: We might get mad
at each other,

and now I'm over it, almost.

I swear,
I really cannot believe

I have not twisted Tami's head

right off her shoulders
and threw that head overboard.

I cannot believe
I have not done that yet.

[laughs]

JESSIE: The lack of fish
is causing everybody
to be frustrated.

Feel like it's idled up
or something.

-Tami is doing her best.
-TAMI: I'm bumping out.

JESSIE: I don't blame anybody.

We're working our asses off.
We're doing

everything we possibly can
to get on a tuna.

[beeping]

BRITTON: Whoo!

The tuna is there.

-[beeping]
-Single fish.

We haven't had the best season,

but we haven't had
the worst either.

When it comes down to this,

we desperately need
another paycheck or two.

I've got a family to support
and a crew to pay.

[beeping]

[reel unspooling]

Hey, hey, got 'em on!
Got 'em on!

MAN: Got two on!

AUSTIN: Yeah! [laughs]

Got a doubleheader.

CAINE: Feels big, Britton.

BRITTON: If we could put
these two on the deck,

this could be super,
super extra special nice
end of the season.

-Flatline bites!
-Doubleheader flatline bite.

CAINE: Come on.

AUSTIN: That's what
I'm talking about.

[laughing]

Whoo!

You know, I got it pushed up
all the way to full drag,

and he's still taking the line
like it's nothing.
He's a big one.

[whistles]

CAINE: These fish are giving us
a run for their money,

and that only means one thing.

They're gonna bring us
some big bucks.

AUSTIN: Now she's running.

We're losin' him, bud.

CAINE: Don't lose him!

AUSTIN:
This thing is eating me alive!

He's running! He's running!

BRITTON: You're losing him!

CAINE: Got two on!

MAN: Fish is running.

MAN 2: We're losin' him, bud!

MAN: Don't lose him.

This thing's eatin' me alive.

He's runnin', he's runnin'.

MAN: Keep your hands on.

Let him take it off.

I got it, I got it, I got it.

BRITTON: The potential for
two paydays is high here,

but it makes everybody have to
focus that much more closely.

Go, Caine!

-[snaps]
-CAINE: Ah, it pulled off.

Ah, bull crap.

-Still got one on.
-Dag! He come off!

Pulled this one off.

[groans]

-BRITTON: Dang!
-CAINE: Now that fish there

could very, very possibly be...

a 10-grander. No doubt.

BRITTON:
Caine, take over the reel.

Austin, get the dart ready.

CAINE: This could be
a good one, here.

Still taking it, but this is
gonna be the real deal here.

Stay on the hook, baby girl.

BRITTON: We pulled the hook
on Caine's fish,

but we still have one fish on.

CAINE: It's a waiting game.

[whistles]
That thing is tight, boy!

-BRITTON: Watch the drag!
-Really, really need you.

[twangs]

BRITTON: Ugh. Gosh.

CAINE: It pulled off.

BRITTON: Pulling the hook
on two fish here
at the end of the season,

pretty sucky.

CAINE: Daggone!
It was a nice fish there.

Son of a gun!

Pulled two hooks.

[clicks tongue] Zero fish.

Double Debbie downer.

[beeping]

TJ: There's a mark of 'em,
right there.

[beeping]

It's just super crucial
that we put

at least one more fish
on the deck right now.

We're struggling.
We haven't had a good season.

The guys are bummed,
I'm bummed.

Come on! Give us one.
Just give us one big tuna.

So that one fish could
definitely help us financially,

and also raise our moods
a little bit.

[beeping]

Come on.

[beeping]

[beeping]

Take it. Come on!

[beeping]

[reel unspooling]

JARRETT:
TJ, we're on! We're on!

TJ: Pa-pow!

[dog barking]

Michael, get out here!

Crank these up.

Come on, Jarrett!
Reel, reel, reel!

Jarrett, reel, reel, reel!

-[barking]
-JARRETT: Oh, yeah!

He's going to the left.

[barking]

MIKE: You want a glove, bud?

Uh, yeah.

[barking]

JARRETT: Whoa!

TJ: Come on, Jarrett!

Reel, reel, reel!

Keep it tight, Jarrett.

It's shaking it's head a lot!

MIKE:
I got a swivel right here.

I'm hoping this fish
is as big as TJ.

JARRETT: We've got color!

TJ: Ah, damn!

MIKE: Yeah, he's a short.
He's a short.

TJ: If they're not at least
73 inches long,

we release them to help
sustain the species.

All right, okay. Okay.

This has been the ultimate
theme of our season.

It's just been one terrible
thing after the other.

A little excitement,
nonetheless.

It's not over yet.
We've got to keep charging.

We have to catch a fish today.

WOMAN: Oh.

Damn, it's 7:00.

TAMI: Another day's gone,
and still no bluefin.

If we could just get one more,
just one more.

Damn!

One more tuna, that means
one more paycheck.

That would be a big help
to me and my family.

And it would mean a lot
to Dita and Jessie.

JESSIE: We've only got
one bluefin,

and we've got to get
another one.

Tammy's working hard.
She's trying to do good.

But there are no guarantees
in fishing.

And that's why they call it
fishing and not catching.

[beeping]

Oh, there's a fish at 80 feet.

DITA: It would mean
everything to us

to get one last, fat paycheck.

But it's got to happen soon.

Whoa! Another fish
at 80 feet. Oh, my gosh!

Oh, oh, oh! Big red!
Big yellow!

Come on!

[beeping]

[beeping]

Bluefin!

-[snaps]
-Uh-oh!

-DITA: Oh!
-Game on! Game on!

DITA: Oh, my God!
Hurry up! Hurry up!

Whoa, it's another fish
at 80 feet.

Oh, my gosh!

Come on.

[beeping]

[snaps]

Uh-oh!

Oh, game on!

Oh, my God!
Hurry up! Hurry up!

I'm in the back,
I'm in the back.

I'm down here. You're okay.

-We got him!
-Whoo, baby!

JESSIE: Careful, careful!

TAMI: Yeah, yeah,

oh, it's spinning back!

JESSIE: Oh, God!
Watch your arms,

watch your arms,
watch your arms!

TAMI: I got it.
I don't know what happened.

-[stutters] I'm good, I'm good.
-JESSIE: Put it in gear.

When that spool started going,

I thought I was in free spool,
it was going so fast.

-JESSIE: Straight behind us.
-TAMI: Watch that hook.

Here comes the breakaway.

It has something big on.

Don't know if
he's still there or not.

We're hoping for the best.

DITA: Come on, big boys.

JESSIE: You can tell by
how much line he's taking,

it's the real deal.

It's back that way.

TAMI: Come on,
come on, come on.

DITA: Be patient.

Come on! Be a big one,
be a big one.

We need a big, ol' boy!

[speaking indistinctly]

Momma needs a big boy!

DITA: Is he still on there?

JESSIE: Out of gear.

DITA: Squid's coming up.

Broke off.

-TAMI: Broke off?
-DITA: Yep.

TAMI: Son of a bitch.

JESSIE: Lost another one.

DITA: We came so close
to getting this one,

but he chafed the line.

Broke off!

It's nobody's fault,

there's nothing
you can do about it.

And sometimes you just got to
let things go.

Yep. We're going to have to
change it all out or something.

-DITA: All right.
-TAMI: There's only
one more day.

And we just have to
keep going strong

and... and pushing each other.

We need a fish really bad.

I love ya.

BRITTON: This is our last day
of the season.

Tick, tick, tick.

I was born into
a long tradition of fishermen.

It's not what I do,
it's what I am.

I'm a fisherman.

It's just takes a particular
breed of person

to love the ups and downs

of harvesting God's creation
to feed people.

MAN:
You've got to be salty.

You've got to have salt
in your veins to be
a bluefin fisherman.

This ain't like going to work
at a bank or a flower shop

or something nice and pretty.

The pretty truth is

it sucks until your ass

puts some fish on the dock.

Think about it,

you wonder
why the hell you do this.

You do it because
you love it.

That's why you do it.

It's frustrating when you

work your ass off,
it still don't come together.

TJ: You know,
I got into tuna fishing
because my dad was into it.

I understand why he was
so passionate about it.

You only have
so much time on this Earth
to do what you love.

I don't know if there's
a lot of people out there
that can say,

you know, they still get
to chase these bluefins

and enjoy it
and do it with their family.

GREG: I'm excited today.

Who's got a better view
from their office than me?

That's as pretty as it gets.

I'm not the best fisherman
around here.

I go out, I spend the time,
I spend the money.

It doesn't happen by itself.
It's not easy.

And that's what it takes.
You got to work.

When you work harder,
it's gonna pay off.

TYLER: I'm not from anywhere.
I mean, I...

I'm from wherever
the bluefin tunas are.

I've been living on my boat
for the last four years.

I don't associate
with my family.

I just fish.

They don't approve of me
being a fisherman.

But, hey, I pay my own bills,
I pay my own way,

I do my own thing.
That's what a man does.

CHARLIE: For fishermen,
we do not remember the weeks

and the days and the months
of bad luck.

We hold on to
the little niblets
of good fishing.

You should've daggone used
that welding degree, boy.

And you're gonna be struggling,
working week to week

for the rest of your
miserable life. [laughs]

You told me
when I was starting out,

for every person
you can show me,

makin' it commercial fishin'...

Ten that can't.

I'll show you 10
that's struggling.

MAN: That's my life goal.

To be that one.

CHARLIE: ...is to be the one.
It's something to shoot for.

I'm trying to be one of them.

Some days are better
than others.

NARRATOR: On the final day
of the season, Reels of Fortune

holds a miniscule lead
over Fishin' Frenzy.

But Doghouse is not
out of the race.

That's about three times now

he's sharpened the dart head.

He's down there shaving
the dart head.

You get a bluefin
that's right there in the boat,

you got to dart it,
so you got to have extras.

They got to be sharp.
You know, you never know when
you're gonna need them.

CAINE: That's his tool.

Yeah, his tool,
he's looking after it.

This is it.
When you can see that...

that end coming,

one fish might be

the difference
in a house payment.

So you better knuckle down
and do your very best.

[beeping]

Holy cow! Look at that mark.

We had a mark.

[reel unspooling]

-CAINE: We're on! We're on!
-BRITTON: Got him on, boy!

CAINE: Hey, buddy.
Right... Right here.

I hope it's a big one.

He's taking it. Taking her out.
Look at that thing go.

AUSTIN: We had a doubleheader
yesterday,

but we lost both fish.

Got us a bite.

So, I think it would
make my dad real happy

if we could get just one more
before the season closes.

CAINE: And it's definitely
going to be a keeper,

and the way things
have been going,

it should be $3,000, $4,000,

maybe even $5,000 or $6,000.

BRITTON: You know what
this is, Caine?

-CAINE: Talk to me, Daddy!
-BRITTON: This is old school!

CAINE: Old school, baby!

Coming to you live!

It's working out all right,
right now.

Keeping our fingers crossed
on this one.

Whoo!

It's gonna be a nice one, boys.

I'm lucky enough to get her,
she's gonna be a good one.

Forward!

-Color right there.
-CAINE: Color, color.

Forward.

Ahhh!

Hold steady.

[groans]

It's a nice fish for sure.

Just trying to keep
my eye on it,

so I... When they get close,
I can throw the dart.

Forward.

CAINE: Come on.

-Throw the dart!
-CAINE: Ahhh!

BRITTON: Throw the dart!
Throw the dart!

MAN: Come on.

[screaming]

Throw the dart! Throw the dart!

-CAINE: Fish is gone.
-AUSTIN: Dang it.

CAINE: We lost him, Britton.

BRITTON: Golly!

Whoo, man alive.

I feel like somebody just
punched me in the throat.

How heart-wrenching is that?

You didn't do nothin' wrong,
Austin.

CAINE: Unbelievable.

AUSTIN: It was a really tough
call when to throw the dart.

The line was across
the fish's back.

Then when it hit the line,
the fish break off.

Just as I go to throw it,
it's boomp, boomp, boomp,

and the hook...
[makes whooshing sound]
comes flying out.

The fish just swims away.

Man, that close.

I'm telling you, man,
it's just a continuation

of hard frickin' knocks
is all that is.

Felt like it was
a good dart shot

and looked like a really good
dart shot to me.

Austin, I... I can't put
losing this fish on him.

It ain't your fault, Austin.

AUSTIN: My dad and Caine
aren't blaming me,

but I feel like
I've disappointed both of them.

What if this was
our last chance
for a paycheck this season?

I tell you, out here fishing,

the hindsight will wear
your soul thin, buddy.

-But again it's...
-Right there, you know?

$4,000 to $6,000
that we just... Ahhh!

So close.

BRITTON: It's not over
till it's over.

Get those lines in the water,
let's keep fishing.

[beeping]

TYLER: Marking 'em.

Nice mark, big one.

There's less than one day left
till the season closes.

And we're nervous.

We've only caught
two fish so far,

we haven't made much money,

and if we don't put some fish
in the boat,

this season's gonna be a bust.

PAUL: Come on, baby.

I need to catch fish.

I have my daughter
that is counting on me.

I have my house, my truck.

-TYLER: Mark, come on, baby.
-PAUL: Come on!

-[reel unspooling]
-Here we go!

On the rod, a big one!

-TYLER: Yeah!
-PAUL: Whoo! Got him on!

Right here, right here,
right here, right here.

Right here. This one.

PAUL:
Love you down in Carolina!

TYLER: Got him on, dude!

That's a lot of money
on the line.

Feels like a good tuna.

Definitely, Paul saw the bite.

PAUL: Oh, yeah.

Took about 800 feet of line.

It's gonna be a battle.

TYLER: We need this tuna.

This fish could make or break
our entire season

in North Carolina.

He's a nice one.

Little ahead.

I got swivel
coming close, Paul.

He's right here, Paul.
He's up on top.

He's right here out
behind the boat.

Nice color.

Going under the boat,
swinging out,
going away right now.

Wow, amazing, the visibility.

Out, swing him out,
swing him out. [grunts]

Take the shot! Take the shot!

-[snaps]
-Oh, no!

PAUL: Aw, we lost it! Come on!

TYLER: Pulled the hook.

[groans]
Losing that fish sucks.

-Set back out.
-PAUL: Yeah?

I'll get the...
I'll get this out.

TYLER: You get him right there,
he's so close to the boat,

couple more turns
and he's yours.

And then you know what?
[snaps] He's gone.

Pulled the hook,
see you later, bye.

We got to get set back out.
The fish are biting.

PAUL:
Yeah, we got to get set out

or we ain't gonna
catch... [bleeps]

Yeah, we got to get the line
in the water.

[beeping]

-Here they are!
-NICK: Marking 'em.

-GREG: 15 down to 25.
-NICK: We're marking!

We watched a paycheck
swim away yesterday.

I'm not gonna let that
happen today.

I'm not gonna rest easy
until we're ahead of
Reels of Fortune.

But if it's gonna happen,
it better happen soon.

It's already late afternoon.

NICK: Come on.

They're gonna go here
in a second.

[reel unspooling]

NICK: We're on! We're on!

Whoo-hoo! There he goes!

Doubleheader.
Watch that other rod!

Hurry up! Hurry up! Hurry up!

Yes!

Hopefully everything
will work out

just like we want it.

NICK: Look good right now.

GREG: Hooking two fish
at a time,

it's a blessing and a curse.

You got two fish on,

but you got double the chance
of losing 'em.

No drag on this one.

They're changing direction.

If they cross lines,
you'll cut 'em off.

-NICK: Switch sides?
-GREG: Yes.

All right, switch.

Be careful.

NICK: There you go.

GREG: What you got to do
is just take your time.

Figure out which way
these fish are going.

Go to work on one, Billon,

go ahead and bump it ahead
a little bit.

Just bump it.

Your rudder straight?

-BILLON: Yeah.
-GREG: Okay. That's good.

GREG: Now we got some weight
on them.

Yeah.

Come on, guys.

We've got to get ahead
of Reels Of Fortune.

We have to win, 'cause I'm
not a very good loser.

There's fish here,
if we catch these,

this will be 12 fish
for the season.

[kissing]

Color on that one.

You take over now.
You stay on that fish.

You got enough drag
on there to keep the hook in?

NICK: Yeah.

MAN 2:
Here's your chance, Frenzy!

Don't lose him!

These fish here,
if we catch these,

this'll be 12 fish
for the season.

[kissing]

GREG: We've got to get ahead
of Reels of Fortune.

We have to win, 'cause I'm not
a very good loser.

MAN: Color on that one.

GREG: You take over on it,
you stay on that fish.

You got enough drag on there
to keep the hook in?

-NICK: Yeah.
-Here's your chance, Frenzy!

Don't lose him!

GREG: I got him.

NICK: Hurry up!
He's kicking bad.

Don't hug it, I got him.

Come on, baby.
Oh, son of a bitch!

GREG: Okay. Got him!

One down, one to go.

Oh, we earned that one.
All right, cool!

Let me take over, Billon,
looks like he's getting
his ass whooped over here.

Yeah.

GREG: Okay, go ahead
and move 'em, if you're ready.

If you can,
crank it on the way.

[grunts]

-NICK: There he is!
-BILLON: There he is!

Tuna!

GREG: That is a pretty bend!

Be a nice way to cap it off,
with a 100-incher.

That would be sweet.

It doesn't get any better
than this.

BILLON: There's your leader.

GREG: Oh, yeah, baby, that's...
that's the one we want.

NICK: Come on, baby!
Let me get around here.

BILLON: There you go,
you're clear.

GREG: Got him!

NICK: Tail rope!
Come right here!

-GREG: You got her.
-BILLON: Oh!

NICK: There we go, we got her.

GREG: Yes! [laughs]

-That's what I'm talking about!
-NICK: Whoo!

-Nice fish, boys!
-GREG: We caught him, baby!

That's the way to do it, man.

Ahhh!

Just another day at the office.

Come on.

-Ready?
-BILLON: All right, go.

GREG: Okay. Now for number two.

BILLON:
I ain't got him very good.

GREG: Grab the tail rope.

[grunts]

All right, let's see
what we got here.

BILLON: 84!

-NICK: Whoo-hoo!
-BILLON: Nice!

-NICK: Yeah!
-GREG: All right,

now we got the big boy!

I don't know if our tape's
gonna be long enough!

-NICK: I don't know!
-BILLON: 96!

-GREG: Whoo-hoo! Yeah!
-NICK: Come on, baby!

We were neck-and-neck with
Reels of Fortune all season.

I'm feeling really confident

that this will put us
over the top.

I am stoked!

I'm gonna start heading
to the barn.

We'll find out
what these fish are worth.

NICK: All right, buddy!
Take us home!

MAN: I'm kinda away
from the pack of boats.

And I'm looking for a school
all to myself.

So hopefully we can get a bite,
you know?

CHARLIE:
It's unfortunate, but we
want to get through the bridge

before dark,
so our time is limited.

Every time I see the sun
getting lower,

I get more knots in my stomach.

I just want one more paycheck
for the season.

Boy, if we could get one more.
Whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo.

JAKE: Right there,
neck-and-neck with Frenzy
all year, you know.

It's just got right down here
to the wire.

Would be nice to win.

You know, come in and poke
our chest out at Frenzy.

[beeping]

CHARLIE: Holy mackerel!
That's a good mark!

Jig that thing, boy,
jig it now!

[beeping]

Where are you, boy?

[beeping]

[rattling]

-JAKE: There he is!
-CHARLIE: There we go!

JAKE: There it is, boss,
there it is!

Look at that bird go!

Look at him!
He's burning her down, dude!

We've just hooked
a nice fish here.

He's burning 'em down, man.

He's dragging the bird
all over the place.

It really seems like
a nice fish.

Bird was...
[makes whooshing sound]

It was coming at us, man.

I'm gonna try to stay away
from him here for a minute,

see if we can't get him to
burn up a little bit of energy.

Wear him out here
a little bit longer,

you know, take a look.
It feels pretty good,

like he's gonna be
a good enough fish.

A 400 or 500-pounder
sure would be nice right now.

All right, Jake,
start. hand-lining!

JAKE: Feel like he's gonna be
a nicer fish.

When you can feel the fish,
you can feel how he's doing,

when he's making his circles,
when he's digging,

when to hold him, when to stop,

and when you can take
some on him,

and when you need to hold him.

Bump her ahead.

Just really trying to
feel the fish to see
if he's still green.

He's still got
some kick to him.

Doing his circles.

[stutters] I think that's him,
bub, I think he's coming up.

Color, bud, there's the color!
Here you go, here he is!

I see it! I see it! I see it!

Could be our last bite
of the year.

We have to have this one.

If this one gets off,
we're done.

JAKE: He's almost here.
Get ready!

He's coming at us!
He's coming at us!

Oh, man,
he's going under the boat!

JAKE: Bump her ahead.

CHARLIE: We're runnin' out
of time here.

We need this fish
something fierce.

This fish could be
the one that makes us

the top earning boat
this season.

Color, bud, there's a color.

Man, we gotta get this one.

He's almost here.
Get ready.

He's comin' at us.

Oh, man, he's going
under the boat.

Forward, forward!

All right, man, he's clear.

CHARLIE: There he is,
right here, right here.

Watch out, Renegade.
Back up, bud.

JAKE: Better come over here,
stick him!

CHARLIE: I got it! Right there.
Got the first one in.

JAKE: Let me get
on the other side of you.

Slide him over here.

CHARLIE: Be nice.
[grunts] That's right.

There you go.

Let me take that one out.

JAKE: All right, man,
we got him! We got him.

It's good.

Thank God we got this one.

I'd like to keep fishing
and try to get another one.

But I've got to get in and get
through the bridge before dark.

Thank God we caught one.

I just, you know,
I thank the Lord.

JAKE: This is great.

This is what
we were looking for

to finish up our season with.

But it sure does suck
knowing we won't be able

to come back and catch
another one tomorrow.

75, baby!

Little fish, big check!

All right!

CHARLIE: We're really hoping
this is a high-quality fish

so we can get a great paycheck
for the end of the season.

We need the money bad,

but it'd be nice
to beat Frenzy.

NICK: Last trip of the year!
We got him.

-BILLON: We finished strong.
-NICK: Lucky today.

There's one in the corner here.

NICK: I'm so glad my wife
Chrissie and my daughter Gwyn

are here to celebrate with me.

NICK: That makes a great end
to the season.

-They're big?
-NICK: Big enough.

My girlfriend's here.
That made my day.

Last day of the season, guys.
Great job.

I think this is gonna
seal the deal.

We're gonna end up on top.

-CHARLIE: Oh, my goodness!
-DENNIS: You rock!

Hey, man, we're lucky enough
we caught a fish.

We only caught one.
Frenzy caught two.

Let's get him off
and see what we got.

-All right, let's lift him up.
-Get him up.

Even though we have more fish
than Reels Of Fortune,

they're ahead of us
in earnings,

because they've had
better quality fish

than we have all season.

Let's weigh him up.
Let's see what we got here.

BUBBA: All right.

What do we got
on this one, Bubba?

BUBBA:
You have 272 on this one.

-Whoo-hoo!
-All right!

Damn.

That's good. 205.

-Nice size,
nice marketable size.
-Yes, sir.

GREG: All right, Bubba.
Let's take a look at him.

BUBBA: All right, this one
does have fat in it,

but just not much.

Color's still
good in it, though.

So, a little bit of oil in it.

Still a good fish.

CHARLIE: Now, this is the core.

That core looks
pretty good now, doesn't it?

It does. Nice cherry core,
nice clarity. Beautiful fish.

BUBBA: Nice core. No burn.
Nice and clear.

GREG: So what do you think?

BUBBA: Uh...

$13 a pound.

-NICK: All right! Nice.
-GREG: That's all right.

-GREG: Keep that average up.
-BILLON: Take that any day.

NARRATOR:
Fishing Frenzy's first tuna

pushes them into the lead.

CHARLIE: Our fish has to be
really good quality

if we're gonna stay on top.

DENNIS: You can see
a skin fat here.

Nice fatty band of oily meat.

Well, good. What do you think?

-DENNIS: $22 a pound.
-Awesome. That's great.

That's a great price per pound.

NARRATOR: Reels of Fortune's
high-quality fish

puts them on top again.

-JAKE: Come on, Renegade.
-CHARLIE: Come on, buddy.
[whistles]

You ready for the second one?

Yeah. Let's bring her up.

GREG: Let's get him
out of here.

Nicest fish of the year,
I think.

NICK: Yes, it is.

[laughing]

GREG: This is our last and
our biggest fish of the season.

I know we're gonna
take the lead
from Reels Of Fortune now.

And the moment of truth.

Alright, what do you got
on the big one, Bubba?

The big one's got 403 pounds.

-GREG: Yeah!
-NICK: Wow.

I was a pound off.

-CHRISSIE: That's nice.
-BILLON'S GIRLFRIEND:
That's awesome.

-NICK: Yeah.
-CHRISSIE: Awesome.

BUBBA: All right,
let's look at the big one.

GREG: Yeah, let's take
a look at the big boy.

BUBBA: All right.

Big boy, it's got
the most fat in it.

Tail color's pretty good.

Take a look on the inside.

[Nick and Greg laughing]

NICK: Yeah.

That's exactly what
we like to see.

Come on, moment of truth here.
What do you got for us?

We need this one
to cap off our season.

BUBBA: I'll give you
$14 a pound.

-NICK: All right. That's good.
-BILLON: Yeah. All right.

Good way to go.
That's a big day.

A big day. Pretty work.

Boys. Good way to end up.

-NICK: Hey, man. Thank you.
-GREG: Good job, man.

GREG: Excellent.

NARRATOR: Fishin' Frenzy's

biggest tuna of the season

makes them the top-earning boat
for the second year in a row,

followed by fellow Southerners

Reels of Fortune and Doghouse.

Meanwhile, northern boats
Hot Tuna and Pinwheel

end their dismal seasons
with two fish each.

And female trio Reel Action
finished with only one fish.

Thank you, Bubba.

GREG: We were neck-and-neck

with Reels of Fortune
all season,

but I wasn't really
worried about it.

I knew we'd end up on top.

Great season,
good way to end up.

Come on, dinner's on me.
Bring the whole family.

-All right!
-Come on. Let's go!

-NICK: Drinks, too?
-GREG: Sure!

[all laughing]

BILLON: All right.

CHARLIE: Frenzy came back
and beat us there at the end,

but that's, that, that's fine.
I mean, we caught some fish.

We, uh, we made
a little bit of money.

I think it was a good season.

Whoo! Man, I can't believe it.

JAKE: Spending time
fishing with my dad

and sharing the experience
through ups and downs,

that's what's
most important in life.

-That was awesome, bud.
-Pretty work there, bud.

And that quality family time
spent on the boat,
that's priceless.

-CHARLIE: Crazy.
-JAKE: Come on!

My son Jake,
he's a great fisherman,

and he's a... he's a good man.

All right, man.

I can't tell you
how proud I am of him.

I love my boy.

-CHARLIE: All right, you ready?
-JAKE: Yeah, man.

CAINE: I've enjoyed it
this winter there, cuz.

I have enjoyed it.

We didn't catch as many fish
this year as Frenzy or Reels.

But the optimist in me says,

although you didn't
do the best,

you did the best you could.

AUSTIN: I learned a lot
this season.

But mostly, it was awesome

being on the water
with my dad every day.

BRITTON: The expectation
that I had for Austin

was just that
he simply just do the job,

and he did.

Every time that
we called on him,

he rose to the occasion.

Austin, here it is,
the end of the season.

Like last year, we flipped on
over to soft crabbin'.

You wanna join us this year?

We're probably gonna
need an extra hand.

Yeah, yeah.

I wanted to make my dad proud,

and the fact that they keep
asking me to fish with them,

I must've done something right.

TYLER: The gamble to coming
down here to the Outer Banks

definitely didn't pay off
this year.

We get to go home!

Massachusetts, here I come!

We had a really bad season
down here in Carolina.

We're gonna have to make up
for it double in Gloucester.

After having such a good year
in Gloucester,

this is really a kick
in the... [bleeps]

We'll kiss Carolina goodbye.

TAMI: It's the last day
of the fishing season.

And like the sunset,

everything has to
come to an end. And, uh...

We didn't finish out the season
like we wanted to,

but, you know,
it could be worse.

We could be in Marciano's
shoes.

He didn't make a cent.

Not the season we hoped for,
that's for sure.

That makes me that much more
hungry to return next year,

and I know I can catch 'em.

DITA: I wish we could've done
a lot better.

I mean, we all have
good seasons and bad seasons.

You know, sometimes just
the chips don't fall
into place for us.

Oh, well,
there's always next year.

Here it is, in the sunset.

TJ: We stayed to the bitter end
and we gave it hell,
and it didn't pay off.

-Hi.
-Hey, buddy. Miss you, man.

-MIKE: What's up, man?
-TJ: What are you doing?

TJ: When I'm away from home,
I miss my family.
I don't have any children,

but I have nieces and a nephew
that I love dearly.

-Pa-pow!
-[both laughing]

Where's Poppy at?
Is Poppy around?

What's going on?

TJ: We missed the kids.
We wanted to say hello.

We can't wait to get home.
We're headed out
tomorrow morning.

It's just the bridge.
It's such a nightmare
getting out of here.

It's a disaster.

Well, don't hit the bridge.

I don't plan on calling you
to tell you I hit the bridge.

If you do hit,
call your mother.

[all laughing]

The poor season down here
at the Outer Banks

has definitely motivated me
to go back to Gloucester

and kick ass.

-[girl screams]
-Whoa! Bye!

-MIKE: Bye-bye, guys!
-KIDS: Bye!

TJ: Love you!

GREG: You have no idea how hard
it is to see my boat like this.

We had a great year this year.

We caught a bunch of fish,
we ended up at the top.

Not a bad way to finish.

But after the season,
starting to run my charters,

coming in, I ran aground.

From 15 knots to a dead stop
in zero feet.

All that force
of a 26,000-pound boat
doing 15 knots

came tight on one spot.

And it punched a hole right
through the bottom of the boat.

We had to build a new strut.

The old one,
half-inch stainless, snapped.

Thank God nobody got hurt.

You're probably looking, total,
probably $40,000, $50,000.

To put that in perspective,

we earned about $46,000
in bluefin season.

It's my charter season now.

Every day I sit
in this boatyard

I'm losing $2,000 plus a day.

If you're gonna fish
for a living,

you're taking a chance
every day.

But... I can't imagine
doing anything else.

It's what I do, it's what I am.

I'm a fisherman.
