When I worked with her
the first time,

she wasn't an artist yet.

She was just a songwriter,
making hits.

So it's really cool
to see her do this for you

because she really
did do this for me.
That's amazing.

Julia Michaels is
a Grammy Award nominee.

She's a writer. She's a singer.

She has all of this under her
belt at such a young age,

and that's what I want to do.

So, what do you think
about this song?

At first, I was like, "Whoa,

that's a big song."

I know, but big song
for big voices.

When I choose a song
for really young singers,

You want to make sure that
the content of the lyrics

is age-appropriate and they
could wrap their heads around it

and it's upbeat,
but it's still emotional.

Larriah's such an old soul.

I was just so compelled
by her voice.

♪ So I'm gonna love you ♪

Whoo! Let's go!

If she's singing
like that at 15,

I can't even imagine what she's
gonna be singing like at my age.

Carter was not
what I was expecting.

That sweet boy can project
like I've never heard.

I threw my paper.
I was like, "Alright."

I'm so screwed.

I can't even sing like this,
and you guys are 14 and 15.

when you're, like,
your guys' age.

You're finding your identity.

It's such a struggle
being a teenager.

It is,
but that was mind-blowing.

I feel like it sounds a little
too sad at the beginning.

a little bit stronger.

because you project so fully.

It's not like you don't get

do that at all.

so much intention.

like, a deep place.

I want to know your story.

My biological father
left when I was 2.

He just chose not to be here
and that's on him,

and in came my stepdad.

He saw me as his own, which was

an amazing thing for him to do.

He did not have to be there
for me,

to have to come to countless
shows that I've done.

He is a role model for me,

and I've tried my hardest
to channel those emotions

and that love
that I have for my family.

Everybody knows that
I just want a daughter.

Is that weird? Like... Ha!

I mean, your singing talent
is so unbelievable.

is so rich and warm

I'm just excited
to see where Gwen takes me,

and I'm excited to see
where I take myself.

This experience has definitely
matured me

and, you know,
shown me what I can really do.

Yeah. Carter, it's interesting

because every time
you'd do something, I saw

Julia go, "Ooh!"

I was like, "Whoo!"
The way you do your style

reminds me of the earlier stuff
he was doing, you know?

Finding body language
is something

that comes over
a long period of time,

and I think the whole key to it

is to be able to, like, make
the right choices

when you're trying to show off
your voice

at the right emotional moment.

I have reason to sing
from my heart

and showcase
that emotional side.

I have a brother
who was diagnosed

with autism at the age of 2.

He teaches me so much more than
I could ever teach him.

I have always been a theater kid

ever since, like,
the fifth grade.

I definitely think theater
has prepared me

for a moment like this.

It's really given me experience

with showing stage presence,

and it really helped me connect
emotionally to a song as well.

beat better? ♪

You do not look like
your voice, okay?

Where is the person
who was singing?

I loved your voice.

The tone was so beautiful.

It was shocking to me.

I think I'm gonna go with Gwen.

My heart is broken. Carter!

It's definitely intimidating

to be one of the younger ones

because everyone here is
so insanely talented,

but that's kind of where
the acting comes in.

During the song, I gonna have
to think about my family

and how much I love them
like I'm gonna lose them.

You know, this is a battle,
but it's also a duet.

You got to be able to show
your stage presence together.

For Larriah,
she already has that emotion.

She was singing from
a real place of pain

and vulnerability.

Carter,
he has a beautiful voice.

You just don't expect that power
to come out of that body,

but he might have to dig
a Little Deeper

to find the emotion of it.

This is going to probably
be your toughest decision.

When this thing started,
I thought Larriah had the edge

because I just felt like she had
a little bit more of a grip

on the song and little bit
more control,

but then I think Carter
may have caught on to that.

When he came in
on his half of the first chorus,

it was like, "Whoa. What the
hell is this kid doing now?"

I guess if I was having to
just say a reason,

Larriah, she ended as strong
as she started.

You both were just wonderful.

Usually, I'm very judgy when it
comes to songs that I recorded,

but I was thoroughly impressed
with your take on the song.

new places to go musically

and then we get into rehearsals
and Larriah blows us away.

You have already lived
a whole life at 15 years old,

and Julia saw that in you

and saw that you were singing
from your heart.

Carter, I think you have
this incredible voice

that you can do
all this stuff with,

and you're just getting started.

To watch you perform
the way you did,

you just had
a lot more confidence

in your body language,
and I saw a big growth in that.

Vocally, you just were
so incredible today.

You have two incredible
young artists.

We know how you feel
about both of them.

Unfortunately,
you can only pick one.

My dream on the show
is to work with young artists,

and I got two of them here
that I think are so magic.
