The Odyssey (1992–1994): Season 3, Episode 13 - Time Bomb - full transcript
(ominous suspenseful music)
- [Jay] The doctor said I was in a coma.
(dramatic music)
Maybe I was, but there is a
world beyond consciousness
that they knew nothing about.
(bright upbeat music)
But when I came back,
nothing was quite the same.
And I couldn't leave
that other one behind.
My odyssey continues.
- Donna. It's good to see you.
What's this?
Handkerchiefs?
- I know they're kind of old fashioned,
but my mom always said that
linen was softer on the nose
than Kleenex.
- That's very thoughtful,
Donna. What's the occasion?
Come on in.
- She can't Mom, she's busy.
- No, I'm not.
- Yeah. Yeah, you gotta go see you later.
Are you nuts?
- I'm concerned for your mom.
It's gotta be a shock that
your dad's still alive.
- She doesn't know yet.
I haven't told her.
- You have to.
If you don't Steve will.
How long do you think he'll wait?
- It's complicated.
Once she knows our lives
will never be the same again.
I've gotta figure this out.
- [Girl] I gave her my
ice cream cone before,
and then she just ate it.
(kids chattering)
- Jay, we need your advice.
- So do all these kids.
You have to wait your turn.
- This is more important than dessert.
Fractal's created the end of everything.
- My research has led me to the core
of the source of all life.
- But in the wrong hands,
it could destroy life as we know it.
- Is it true, Fractal?
- There's something he's not telling.
- With my new design
changes, it could be a bomb.
But no one would be
foolish enough to use it.
Its explosive force is
wildly unpredictable.
It's mainly a theoretical invention.
- Then uninvent it.
- Once you know something Alpha,
you can never pretend you don't.
Show it to me.
(metal clanks)
- Great skull!
It's- it's- it's...
- Gone.
(bright music)
- It's got to be around here some place.
I merely misplaced it.
- [Alpha] How could you lose
the most dangerous weapon ever invented.
- [Fractal] I was distracted.
Damn it Alpha, since
you've come into my lab,
I seem to be unable to get a grip on
inconsequential details.
- You're blaming it on me?
- I don't get it.
Are we talking lethal weapon here or not?
- Although it's antithetical,
it's highly theoretical hypothetical
- In layman's terms.
- It's my masterpiece.
The device is so well-made,
any idiot could use it.
(suspenseful music)
- You seem preoccupied today.
- [Jay] What?
- What's on your mind?
- Nothing.
- Now I know you're concerned
about Sierra's trip,
a month is a long time.
But it'll give you a
chance to work things out
on your own mind.
- Actually, there is something on my mind.
- Okay. Shoot it.
- Suppose you had a video
camera and you lost it.
Or you thought you did.
And you collect the insurance, big time.
It's a very expensive camera.
- [Man] Yeah.
- Then a couple of
years later it shows up.
Do you have to give back
the insurance money?
- Well, I'm no insurance agent,
but I'd probably say yes.
Otherwise it sounds like fraud.
- But if I keep my mouth
shut, who's gonna know?
- They'll know.
Secrets have a way of
blowing up in your face.
(tender suspenseful music)
- It could be booby-trapped.
- It's merely a residue
from Finger's winter solstice celebration.
- Obviously somebody wanted us to find it.
Be careful!
(bright dramatic music)
- Thank God.
(package blasts)
(Medea screams)
(suspenseful music)
- Great skull.
- There once was a world so sublime,
no grownups, no rules and no crime.
Now no movements too small,
when you're up against the wall.
Who started this race against time?
- [Medea] You don't need
a handwriting expert
to know who wrote this.
- Yeah, but what does Finger want?
You know him better than anyone.
- He wants what you have.
- Then it'd have to be me.
Why is he playing games with us?
- He likes games.
- He likes to win.
- Games were always a big
part of our life together.
- He doesn't seem like the playful type.
- There are two sides to everyone.
You should have seen them in the old days
before he took power.
- I don't wanna see his baby pictures.
I wanna know his next move.
- You can figure him out.
You know him better than you think.
- We're like night and day.
- Exactly.
- [Fractal] Sublime rhyme to slime.
- [Jay] Finger is slime, so.
- [Alpha] Redundant.
- [Jay] Please attempt to
concentrate, race against time.
- That's it. It's a time bomb.
- Possibly.
I didn't devise a time bomb,
but Finger isn't genius.
- And diabolic.
- Never worries.
- It's where it will do the most harm.
- No one knows the structural weaknesses
of the tower better than Finger.
- Yeah, just gotta be
ready in front of us.
- That's right.
He wants us to find the bomb.
- [Alpha] Why?
- Because it's a game.
And it's only fun if you play along.
- Blowing up the tower is not a game.
- Oh, but it is, if you've
got nothing to lose.
- What about all the kids
who live in the tower?
This is huge.
- No, no, no. Think like Finger.
It's a game. Lots of little moves.
- No movement, too small.
(suspenseful music)
- The bomb's not here.
- But Finger's around here
somewhere. I can feel him.
(turbine clanking)
Hey guys, look at this.
I'm delighted that you like my game,
with enemies and friends are the same.
Come and see me alone
on a chair made of bone,
or your little game will be blown.
- He's gone bonkers.
Your friends and your
enemies are the same?
- Here.
Take this.
The only way to stop
Finger now is to kill him.
- We can't let him get away again.
- No! The bomb is still ticking somewhere.
It's gonna be hard to get
directions from a corpse.
We need a better plan
than mindless brutality.
Our only chance is to
convince him to stop.
- (laughs) Yeah, I'm
trying to convince the rain
to stop falling.
- Medea, wait.
- For what?
You don't wanna stand up to Finger.
I offered you steel,
and steel doesn't bend.
- I have to do it my way.
(tender somber music)
- Everyone makes fun of me.
I don't have any existential dilemmas.
(upbeat dramatic music)
(door creaks)
(tender suspenseful music)
(swords clanking)
(Brad yelling)
- No, you can't.
(tense music)
- He tricked us again.
- But why would he drag
us all the way out here?
What does he want?
- To get us away from the tower.
- Away from all the others.
(suspenseful music)
- Jay. I thought we said
goodbye on the phone.
- Yeah. I had to see you one more time.
A month is like forever.
- Oh, come on. It's not
like it's a holiday.
I'll be working. I'm gonna be really busy.
- Yeah. But I won't.
And I'll be thinking
about you all the time.
- Jay, I'll call. I promise.
Now, just go.
The limo will be here any minute.
- I'll wait.
- I really hate long goodbyes. Just go.
(limo engine revving)
You see? it's right here.
- But-
- Now come on.
Just go.
- What's he doing here?
- Is this all your luggage?
We're gonna be away for a month.
- You're going with him?
I thought you said you broke up.
- His father owns the TV station.
- Right. Then why didn't you
tell me he was going too?
- Because it's purely professional.
And it's none of your business.
- Come on Sierra, we'll be late.
- You make me sick.
And the both of you think that you own me.
You're both just the same.
(suspenseful music)
- [Brad] Medea!
- [Jay] We're too late.
(upbeat dramatic music)
(suspenseful music)
It's Finger's glove.
- [Brad] I knew it.
- She's got her.
(upbeat suspenseful music)
- [Alpha] Medea's important,
but there's a lot more at stake here.
We have to find the bomb.
- [Jay] Finger planned it that way.
Medea was our best weapon against him.
She could see right into his soul.
- And all those chances
you had to finish him off.
- I never thought that was the answer.
- Then you flopped the test.
You think Finger will
let you off the hook?
- If we have to stop him,
we have to start thinking like him.
- If you start thinking like Finger,
not only will you you'll lose Medea,
you'll lose yourself.
- It's the only way. It's
his game and his rules.
Remember the clue?
What if enemies and friends are the same?
(tense suspenseful music)
(footsteps tapping)
- It's not my first choice,
but when you're hunted like
a beast, you live like one.
Sit.
- You set this in motion, Finger.
Life was just starting to settle,
kids were just starting to be happy again.
- Smile for me, the way
you always light up.
- Then you had to come
back and wreck everything.
- Oh no.
Medea,
first time, you set eyes on
Jay, what did you call him?
That's right?
- The Wrecker.
- Ever since he showed
up, everything's changed.
- That's not his fault.
That's life, things change.
- Yeah, for the worse.
I'm the only one with a backbone,
to fight to keep things the way they were.
When we were all happy to be kids.
You remember?
- You can't stop time.
- Nah.
If you were beside me,
everything would be like it was.
You should never have left me.
I should never have let you go.
But now you're back.
- You don't lose looks that way.
- Oh really?
And in your heart you're with Jay?
Up in the tower, waffling, worrying.
He can't even pick up a
knife to save you from me.
- But he's not weak.
He feels for people.
He's even foolish enough to feel for you.
- I'm deeply moved.
(table bangs)
And how does he feel for you, Medea?
- He loves me, for myself.
Not as a reflection of his power.
- He loves you?
(airy suspenseful music)
Oh does he?
(airy suspenseful music)
- You don't love me, Steve.
Why don't you just say what you mean?
- I did.
I said, I think we should
postpone the wedding.
Not cancel it.
Look, there are issues from the past
that haven't been resolved.
- Well, I am tired of secrets, Steve.
If you have something
to tell me, let me know.
- I wish I could, but it's
not my secret to tell.
- Guess you're already here.
- Yeah, that's right.
And I won't be coming back
until you tell your mom about your dad.
- Have a nice life.
- You know, maybe you
won't see me again, Jay,
but you're gonna have to look
at your mother, every day.
(door bangs)
(tender somber music)
- Who are you?
- Don't you recognize yourself?
- I've never seen myself like this before.
- You are who you pretend to be.
Maybe next time you
ought to be more careful
when you play "Make-believe."
- Finger!
(glass shattering)
There isn't gonna be a next
time. I'm playing for keeps.
- That's the only way.
I underestimated you, Jay.
I thought you were just a wimp.
But our mutual friend, Medea was right.
We are alike.
- Medea knows the difference
between you and me.
- [Finger] It's less than you think, Jay.
- Just tell me, I'm not
gonna play your game.
What do you want?
(Finger laughs)
More than you know,
less than you can imagine.
- You're a madman.
- Madness and mercy.
It's an unbeatable combination.
- What are you saying?
You and me on the same side?
- I know it.
We need each other.
- Where's Medea?
- You see? Always thinking of others.
Jay, you can love, and I can hate.
- Give me Medea and lead me to the bomb.
- And you play fair.
You only get one turn.
Either Medea, or the bomb.
It's your choice.
(bright dramatic music)
(upbeat music)
- [Jay] Are you okay?
- You mean you choose Medea
over the wellbeing of the world?
I would have.
(tender music)
- I cannot believe you chose me
over all the kids in the tower.
- Trust me. I know what he's up to.
- You see?
Jay and I aren't so different after all.
- Yeah the prone is a vegetarian.
- So what do you say, Jay?
You and me, rule as one.
- Why would Jay need you?
- Ask him.
It's not so easy to run a world.
You start off trying to do a good.
Didn't I Medea?
- That was so long ago.
- Yeah. I thought I knew it.
Everyone else wanted to play.
I gave up my fun, to
take care of these kids.
To give these kids what they wanted.
To keep them kids.
Medea watched me change.
And now she'll watch you.
- I'll never turn into you, Finger.
- You rule alone, you become the bad guy.
Always happens.
It already has.
Because of you, kids started growing up.
- Maybe kids are ready to grow up.
What are you afraid of, Finger?
- Nothing anymore.
- Great Scott! He has the detonator.
(dramatic music)
- A great dinner, Mom.
- Macaroni and cheese?
Don't men ever say what they mean?
- Are you talking about Steve?
- I know he doesn't wanna marry me.
Why can't he just say he doesn't love me.
- Because it's not true.
- Why are you defending
Steve? Is this a guy thing?
- I know the real reason and it's not you.
Wait here.
- I hope this is better than
the lame story he gave me.
(tender suspenseful music)
- I'm gonna wreck the world, partner.
Now get back.
You tell him, Fractal.
- It's very sensitive.
A sneeze will set it off.
- [Alpha] Fractal?
- Haven't you ever been swept away
by the pursuit of excellence?
(Brad yells)
- Uh, uh, uh.
(bomb beeping)
- We've gotta stop him before
he blows off the tower.
- He won't blow off the tower.
The bomb's right here.
(Finger laughs)
- I like the way you think, Jay.
- You called it a time bomb,
but you didn't mean a bomb on a timer.
- You know me too well, Medea.
I do so miss our little amusements.
- He means a bomb to stop time.
- You're both whack.
How can you stop time?
- By pulling up the wall.
(dramatic music)
(Finger laughing)
(cutlery clanking)
(bouncy suspenseful music)
- Grown-ups will come flying in,
and our lives will
never be the same again.
- They'll shut down my laboratory.
They won't respect my research.
- I'll get no respect peering.
They'll think I got a behavioral problem.
- They'll order us around.
Tell us what to do.
From my readings, they
didn't do such a hard job
with their own world.
(Finger laughing)
- You know what this means?
They'll keep us kids forever.
'Cause they need us to look up to them.
- Civilization as we know of will end.
(Finger laughing)
(tender suspenseful music)
(dramatic music)
- Bye-bye, baby.
(tender suspenseful music)
- Oh my God.
He's alive.
You've been telling the truth all along.
(suspenseful music)
- (laughs) Baby bye-bye.
(bomb beeping)
(bright suspenseful music)
(bomb bangs)
(people coughing)
(tender music)
Grown-ups.
- Are they here yet?
- Come on, what are you waiting for?
Come on, I'll take you on.
(suspenseful music)
- [Jay] Why are they just standing there?
- Finger was wrong.
There still is a lot between us.
- Grown-ups are just as afraid of us
as we are of them.
(somber suspenseful music)
(bright airy music)
- [Jay] The doctor said I was in a coma.

- I did.
I said, I think we should
postpone the wedding.
Not cancel it.
Look, there are issues from the past
that haven't been resolved.
- Well, I am tired of secrets, Steve.
If you have something
to tell me, let me know.
- I wish I could, but it's
not my secret to tell.
- Guess you're already here.
- Yeah, that's right.
And I won't be coming back
until you tell your mom about your dad.
- Have a nice life.
- You know, maybe you
won't see me again, Jay,
but you're gonna have to look
at your mother, every day.
(door bangs)
(tender somber music)
- Who are you?
- Don't you recognize yourself?
- I've never seen myself like this before.
- You are who you pretend to be.
Maybe next time you
ought to be more careful
when you play "Make-believe."
- Finger!
(glass shattering)
There isn't gonna be a next
time. I'm playing for keeps.
- That's the only way.
I underestimated you, Jay.
I thought you were just a wimp.
But our mutual friend, Medea was right.
We are alike.
- Medea knows the difference
between you and me.
- [Finger] It's less than you think, Jay.
- Just tell me, I'm not
gonna play your game.
What do you want?
(Finger laughs)
More than you know,
less than you can imagine.
- You're a madman.
- Madness and mercy.
It's an unbeatable combination.
- What are you saying?
You and me on the same side?
- I know it.
We need each other.
- Where's Medea?
- You see? Always thinking of others.
Jay, you can love, and I can hate.
- Give me Medea and lead me to the bomb.
- And you play fair.
You only get one turn.
Either Medea, or the bomb.
It's your choice.
(bright dramatic music)
(upbeat music)
- [Jay] Are you okay?
- You mean you choose Medea
over the wellbeing of the world?
I would have.
(tender music)
- I cannot believe you chose me
over all the kids in the tower.
- Trust me. I know what he's up to.
- You see?
Jay and I aren't so different after all.
- Yeah the prone is a vegetarian.
- So what do you say, Jay?
You and me, rule as one.
- Why would Jay need you?
- Ask him.
It's not so easy to run a world.
You start off trying to do a good.
Didn't I Medea?
- That was so long ago.
- Yeah. I thought I knew it.
Everyone else wanted to play.
I gave up my fun, to
take care of these kids.
To give these kids what they wanted.
To keep them kids.
Medea watched me change.
And now she'll watch you.
- I'll never turn into you, Finger.
- You rule alone, you become the bad guy.
Always happens.
It already has.
Because of you, kids started growing up.
- Maybe kids are ready to grow up.
What are you afraid of, Finger?
- Nothing anymore.
- Great Scott! He has the detonator.
(dramatic music)
- A great dinner, Mom.
- Macaroni and cheese?
Don't men ever say what they mean?
- Are you talking about Steve?
- I know he doesn't wanna marry me.
Why can't he just say he doesn't love me.
- Because it's not true.
- Why are you defending
Steve? Is this a guy thing?
- I know the real reason and it's not you.
Wait here.
- I hope this is better than
the lame story he gave me.
(tender suspenseful music)
- I'm gonna wreck the world, partner.
Now get back.
You tell him, Fractal.
- It's very sensitive.
A sneeze will set it off.
- [Alpha] Fractal?
- Haven't you ever been swept away
by the pursuit of excellence?
(Brad yells)
- Uh, uh, uh.
(bomb beeping)
- We've gotta stop him before
he blows off the tower.
- He won't blow off the tower.
The bomb's right here.
(Finger laughs)
- I like the way you think, Jay.
- You called it a time bomb,
but you didn't mean a bomb on a timer.
- You know me too well, Medea.
I do so miss our little amusements.
- He means a bomb to stop time.
- You're both whack.
How can you stop time?
- By pulling up the wall.
(dramatic music)
(Finger laughing)
(cutlery clanking)
(bouncy suspenseful music)
- Grown-ups will come flying in,
and our lives will
never be the same again.
- They'll shut down my laboratory.
They won't respect my research.
- I'll get no respect peering.
They'll think I got a behavioral problem.
- They'll order us around.
Tell us what to do.
From my readings, they
didn't do such a hard job
with their own world.
(Finger laughing)
- You know what this means?
They'll keep us kids forever.
'Cause they need us to look up to them.
- Civilization as we know of will end.
(Finger laughing)
(tender suspenseful music)
(dramatic music)
- Bye-bye, baby.
(tender suspenseful music)
- Oh my God.
He's alive.
You've been telling the truth all along.
(suspenseful music)
- (laughs) Baby bye-bye.
(bomb beeping)
(bright suspenseful music)
(bomb bangs)
(people coughing)
(tender music)
Grown-ups.
- Are they here yet?
- Come on, what are you waiting for?
Come on, I'll take you on.
(suspenseful music)
- [Jay] Why are they just standing there?
- Finger was wrong.
There still is a lot between us.
- Grown-ups are just as afraid of us
as we are of them.
(somber suspenseful music)
(bright airy music)
