The Famous Five (1978–1979): Season 2, Episode 5 - Five Are Together Again: Part 2 - full transcript

What you want? You want my money?

TYPical.

He's losing all his money.

What day was August the 9th 1965?

It was a Thursday.

That's right. I know it
was because I was born then.

You must be a genius, Mr. Wooh.

Just a little elementary magic.

I'm sure this boy's father
would be just as quick as I am.

Dad's too busy with his inventions,
doesn't have time for tricks.

I mean, sometimes he's
working in his tower all night.

Tower?

Professor Hayling! Oh Professor,
wake up. Hurry, Professor!

Oh dear, the Professor's
valuable papers!

Professor! Oh Professor.

Jenny! What is it?

Hurry! Somebody's trying
to break into the Tower!

But that's not possible!

You must have imagined it, Jenny.

Professor, I know I heard something!

It takes three keys to get into the tower,
even if he climbed in, which I doubt,

they couldn't have got
out through the door.

And if he'd climbed
down we'd have seen him.

I didn't imagine it. I was
looking out of the window.

Anyway, how could anyone know that
your secret papers are kept up there?

What was that?

Give me that torch.

Alright, come out of there!

Professor, Professor, be careful!

Come out, I said.

It's Charlie! Jenny, it must have been
Charlie you saw climbing the Tower.

I don't mind the
circus using our field,

but I'm now having these animals roaming
about keeping us up half the night.

I shall call Mr. Tapper
to come and fetch him.

Dad, I'll take Charlie back.
I know where his cage is.

If we're up, Tapper can get up too.

But you don't understand. He
belongs to Sam, his trainer.

Charlie's a bit wild but
he's awfully clever and...

I don't care what he is,
he's no business in my garden!

Please, Charlie's escaped
before, Mr. Tapper'll be furious.

Well that's Mr Tapper's
business, not mine.

Please, Sam'll lose his act.
Please let me take Charlie back,

he hasn't done any harm.

Oh, very well. Here take this.

You lot going swimming today?
The sea should be warm enough.

Yes, why don't we? We could stop
by our cottage and get Timmy.

Don't dogs have to go into quarantine?

Don't be daft, Anne!

Well, Timmy was in the
house with your cook,

as well as Aunt Fanny and Uncle Quentin.

Dogs go into quarantine for
dogs diseases, like rabies.

Don't they Professor?

Yes, Dick's quite right. Look
at the time, I must get to work.

Enjoy yourselves!

Well somebody should say something!

Why didn't you come to our
tents last night and wake us up

when you took Charlie back?

Well, I thought you didn't want
to know, after I lost my temper.

No hard feelings.

I don't understand how
Charlie got out though.

Neither do I.

Gave me a fright I can tell you.

I really thought it was someone
trying to steal father's papers.

That'll teach you not to go blabbing
about your father's work in future.

Especially as it's secret.

I wasn't talking about
his work. I was only...

Boasting, as usual!

Leave off you two.

George keeps going on about it!

Well, nice to see
we're all friends again!

I just couldn't get back to sleep
after all that business last night.

Next time you see your friend Sam.

You might ask him to keep
his monkey properly locked up.

He's not a monkey, he's a chimpanzee!

Oh well, whatever he is.

Jenny! Jenny! Come quickly!

Oh, now what?

What's up?

What a mess!

Some of the notes for my
new invention are missing.

How can you tell?

They were here, in an
orange striped file.

Luckily I was working on most
of the papers in bed last night.

So what's left won't be
of much use to anybody.

The only other thing missing is a little
brass clock I use as a paperweight.

Oh! What a mess! It looks like a wild
animal has been let loose in here!

That's probably what it was, that
blasted chimpanzee from the circus!

Wait 'til I see that man Tapper!

No, there's nothing here.

I told yer I haven't seen
any papers or any clock.

I looked Charlie in myself last night.

Sam, I've told you time and time.

I'm afraid this time he has to go.

My new act is ready.

I'm sorry, Sam. We must find the papers,

before the Professor
decides to call the police!

This won't look good for the circus.

Now look what you've done.

Morning Charlie.

Poor Sam. What a rotten thing to happen.

We really think, he didn't
know Charlie was free.

Somebody has to let him out.

What who would do a thing like that?

If only we could find
the papers and the clock.

They could be anywhere!

Charlie didn't have anything

when we found him by
the Tower last night.

Which means he must have dumped
them somewhere near your house.

And if we can find them.

We could give them back,

then maybe Mr. Tapper would
give Charlie another chance!

There's absolutely nothing there.
We've covered every inch of our patch.

Charlie couldn't have gone far,

because it was only moments after
Jenny saw him climbing the Tower,

that Dad saw him in the shrubbery.

Oh, poor Sam, he spent all
that time training Charlie.

Wait a minute. Supposing Sam had another
reason to teach Charlie those tricks.

You mean so that Charlie could
break in places and steal things?

A perfect accident.
A monkey gets out and...

Oh no, I don't believe that!

Charlie's not a monkey,
he's a chimpanzee.

So what, it all fits and
Professor Hayling's work

would be worth a lot
to the right person.

Look, aren't you forgetting something,

it's not Sam who is interested
in the Professor's work.

It's Mr. Wooh.

But Mr Wooh would be
interested in my father's work.

He's a mathematician
as well as a memory man.

Yes, I'd hate to have to do
all that work again from memory.

I really can't thank
you enough, Mr Wooh.

Chimpanzees are notorious
thieves and fiendishly clever.

I owned one myself once. However,
it is I who should be thankful.

That the happy accident of
finding your papers fell to me,

thus giving me the
honour of nesting you.

I don't know about that.

I mean I believe that you are
no mean mathematician yourself.

I couldn't claim to be
in the same league as you.

But I hear you perform amazing
feats of memory and calculation.

Ah, but your work benefits
everybody, not just yourself.

Entertaining the public
is important work as well.

You give lectures. The
whole world oomes to you.

I expect you get more applause. It
must give you great satisfaction.

It's a living, Professor.

Would have to be Mr.
Wooh who found the papers,

it would have been nice
to cheer Sam up a bit.

At least we can tell Sam the
file's been found, come on!

Let's go find the boys.

You don't think Mr. Tapper's
given Sam the sack?

Shouldn't think so,
Charlie's still here.

Besides the circus opens
tomorrow, they need him.

That's Dad's clock, the one
that he uses for a paperweight!

But that wasn't there before,
they searched the cage.

Which means somebody put it there.

But who? And why?

Maybe somebody wants to
get Sam into more trouble.

But it wouldn't, not now
the papers have been found.

Unless. Up to now everybody's
assumed that it was Charlie

who broke into the tower room,
ransacked it and took that file.

But do you know something?

What are you getting at Julian?

Charlie can't read!

It would have to be a terrific
concidence that he pinches that one,

he just takes anything.

Which means that whoever
is framing Charlie

must know now the file
is useless on its own.

You think they'll try again?

Not a chance. I bet Dad'll sleep
with his papers underneath his pillow.

But I think I know a way to
find out who the real culprit is!

I'm very grateful, Professor.

I've recovered my property,
Mr. Tapper, I assure you,

I don't intend to take
any further action.

I'm relieved to hear that, only with
the circus opening tomorrow night,

we can do without all the bad publicity.

Please don't concern yourself
unnecessarily, Mr. Tapper.

Professor, I'm very
grateful. Thank you very much.

And you can rest assured that
chimpanzee will be kept safely under lock

and key in future.
- I'm glad to hear it.

Thank you very much.

Hey Tinker, what's up with you?

Nothing.

It's good enough to fool anyone!

Everybody's backstage, Mr.
Tapper's been talking to them.

Sam and Mr. Wash'?

Right, now you remenber
what to say, don't you?

Course I do!

Do vou think he'll leave anything out?

Don't worry. Tinker'll
tell them everything.

I say, Mr. Wooh, isn't it terrific
luck your finding Dad's missing file.

Yeah, wasn't it just!

I'm surprised your father
hasn't called the police anyway.

Perhaps you think it was
a burglar and not Charlie?

Strange that the papers were found
and not the little clock that's all.

That doesn't matter. Dad says those
papers aren't any use on their own anyway.

And the really important ones are
being taken to Kirrin Island for safety!

I suppose your father is
transferring his work there,

very wise in the circumstances.

Only a precaution, just in case,

anyone tries to get their hands on
his invention. Now that it's finished.

You really shouldn't be
discussing your father's business,

you never know who is listening.

Oh, its okay. Kirrin Island is private
property and it would take years

to search the castle ruins!

Well, I don't think you ought go to
Kirrin Island on your own, George.

It could be dangerous!

I'll have Timmy with me!

What about Rogers?

Oh, I'm not scared of him.

Anyway, it's my island, it's
my boat and I'm the best rower!

Can't argue with that!
But remember, George,

the minute you see who gets
those papers, you come back!

Timmy!

Be quiet! Timmy!

What'a going on here?

Only me, Mr. Rogers.

Hey, you can't take him,
your father expressly said.

Sorry no time to explain.

Hey George. George, come here! George,

I'm not taking responsibility for this!

They're all in the village having
supper. Mr. Tapper, Mr. Wooh and Sam.

Blast! We can't follow them all.

We could split up.

Listen!

Somebody's out there.

Uncle Quentin!

Are you alright?

Yes, I'm alright.

Oh, aren't you meant
to be in quarantine?

Cook's illness turned out
to be nothing but a virus.

And Aunt Pan, is she here?

I'm afraid she went down with it. I
seem to be immune. Now, where's George?

Look, Timmy, I can't pull
the boat with you. Get out.

Good boy, Timmy. Sit.

Good boy, stay on guard.
On guard. Good boy, Tim.

Get away!

How clever of them to send
a child, who'd suspect a child

to be carrying anything so valuable.
However they're not clever enough,

in no time. I will have
memorised all of this.

Sam!

I must say I can't turn my back for
two minutes together without you lot

getting into something.

I refuse to be held
responsible, Professor Kirrin,

she's wilful, that daughter of yours.

I agree Mr. Rogers, but right
now she could be in danger and...

This is Sam's.

Yes, he really had us fooled.

Look, there's a boat been
pulled away from here!

He must have gone back
to the island. Rogers,

please go back and call the
Police! Come on, children!

Are you alright?

Where the heck am I?

Kirrin Island!

Kirrin Island? But I was
following Mr. Wooh on the beach.

What for?

I think he's a mixed up in this.

I wanted to catch up with him for what

they've done to me and for
making Charlie, the scapegoat.

Don't worry, I know a way out of here
through the old well shaft! Come on!

Oh what a night! And what a star in
the heaven of invention I'm going to be.

When I've sold these plans,
I can develop my true genius.

Of course the beautiful pan is,
nobody can lay a finger on us.

They got out!

Now get off, you fool!

Stop them! We must stop them!

Get off, all of you. Get away!

Timmy!

So he used his assistant.

I knew it couldn't be that Mr.
Wooh I saw climbing the tower.

Yes, everyone was
convinced it was Charlie,

no one speared a thought
for Mr. Whoo's Assistant.

And that somebody was
letting Charlie out at night.

But why did Mr. Wooh bother to
bring back the file to the Professor?

Because he realised it was incomplete
when he memorised the papers,

so he brought them back to
keep suspicion off himself.

And he planted the
clock in Charlie's cage

to keep the suspicion
strong in that direction,

so that he could steal the papers later.

AA bit to clever for his own good.

I must say, he took me in completely.

That's why we had to set the trap.

And were nearly caught in it yourself.

Well they certainly saved my bacon.

Chimpanzee, you mean!

Here! That's my sandwich.

Come here!

D'you mind if we come in?

Hello, Mr Tapper.

I reckon, I owe Charlie an
apology. And you too, Sam!

No hard feelings, eh, Charlie?

But we'd appreciate it if you could
find time to look at our new act.

Mr. Tapper said...

I've been watching you
rehearse for the last few days

and what was I was going to say, was:
we need a new act to replace Mr. Wooh

when we open tomorrow night.
So if anyone has any ideas?
