The Bachelor NZ (2015–…): Season 1, Episode 13 - Episode #1.13 - full transcript
With only 4 bachelorettes remaining, it's Arthur's turn in the hot seat. With family interrogations and skeptical friends, can Arthur prove himself to the girls' nearest and dearest.
(male narrator)
Previously, on "The Bachelor.."
Matilda went on a long-awaited
second single date.
Oh, my God.
(male narrator)
And it was everything
she could have
wished for, and more.
On a scale of one to ten,
Arthur is now an eleven.
(male narrator) Alicia and
Denny were forced to fight
for Arthur's affection..
- Trying to catch me.
- It's not a bad idea.
(male narrator)
...on a date with a difference.
I'm really hoping I'm not
a third wheel on this date.
(male narrator) And when Crystal
was overcome by jealousy..
I kind of want to
punch you right now.
(male narrator) ...she left,
leaving four girls in the running.
(Crystal) I'm so glad
that I don't have to go
to another cocktail
party with you four.
Doing my head in.
(male narrator)
Tonight, the ultimate test..
- Hello, hello.
- Oh!
(male narrator)
...as Arthur fronts up
to four very different families.
Four parents, two siblings.
Great.
- Yeah.
- God.
(male narrator)
From the deep south..
Do you think she's ready
for another relationship?
(male narrator)
...to the suburbs of Auckland.
I want you to stand up there.
I'm going to throw
a couple darts at you.
(male narrator)
He will be questioned..
So you're pandering to me.
Poppy has been through
heartbreak before
'and it wasn't nice to see.'
I don't want to see her hurt.
(male narrator)
...and confronted.
What kind of ass would
do something like that?
I feel like I'm in
front of a firing squad.
(male narrator) If he survives
that, his next challenge
will be sending one girl home.
Will it be southern girl
Alicia, who has struggled
to open her heart?
(Alicia) I feel like I have
invested quite a lot in this now.
(male narrator) Laid-back
Matilda, who has only just
stepped out of the friend zone.
(Matilda) I could definitely
see him being my future husband.
(male narrator)
Free-spirited Poppy, the hippie
with the heart of gold.
(Poppy)
I don't want to go home.
I definitely want to be here.
(male narrator) Or the
youngest, of the girls, Dani
who has made her feelings
clear from the outset.
(Dani)
I'm so incredibly nervous.
I could quite possibly pass out.
Can I have a moment
with you outside?
[instrumental music]
[instrumental music]
(Arthur) I've met four incredible
women through this experience.
Women that I really
do have feelings for.
I can't believe how lucky
I am to have met them.
And now I get to
meet their families.
(Dani) So I'm sitting
on Herne Bay Beach
waiting for Art to come down.
And I really missed seeing him.
I can't wait for him
to come and see where I live.
(Arthur) I think you can
tell a lot about a person
by the way that they interact
with their loved ones.
If I want to get to
know the real woman
I think it's vital that
I get to know her family.
I guess the scary thing
about home visits is that
if it doesn't all work out,
and I don't get along with them
or they don't get along with me
you know,
it's a determining factor
in a relationship.
So there's lots
of pressure on me
to impress these families.
- Morning.
- Hello.
Welcome.
(Dani) Art walks up,
and I'm so happy to see him.
He looks amazing, as usual.
How are you feeling about today?
- Little bit nervous.
- Yep.
- Yep.
- Yeah.
It's extremely important for me
that Art gets along
with my family.
It's almost a make or break.
If my family don't approve
or don't like him
um, that could be it
for Art and I.
So who am I meeting today?
So you're meeting mom and dad.
- 'Yeah.'
- My stepmom and my stepdad.
- Yeah.
- And Sarah and Michelle.
- Okay.
- Yeah.
Four parents, two siblings.
- Right.
- Yeah.
- Easy.
- Yeah. Yeah, easy.
Four parents, not just two,
but four.
[laughs]
God.
Yeah, and they'll probably all
just want to know
everything about you.
Yeah, what's your
dad gonna be like?
Oh no, dad's chill.
Like dad..
It's gonna be
easy-peasy with dad.
- Yeah?
- Yeah.
But I am still his daughter,
so he's always gonna
want what's best
for me and stuff.
He's still protective of you.
Yeah.
- Rob? Robo.
- Robo.
Well, his name's Mark,
but everyone calls him Robo.
Everyone calls him Robo.
What shall I call him?
- I don't know.
- Sir.
No, don't.
He'll hate that.
(Arthur) I think I am
a little bit nervous.
For once the pressure's
gonna be on me
and I'm gonna be the one
answering the questions.
This is gonna be good.
Yay, I'm so excited.
(Dani) I'm just telling
him to be himself
and to kind of anticipate
something a bit different.
My family are quite
unique and out there
so I just want him
to embrace it all.
I guess it's time then?
- Yeah.
- Shall we go do it?
- Let's go do it.
- Go meet the fam.
Let's go meet the fam.
Alright, cool.
Okay, yeah, let's not kiss
in front of your parents.
Yeah, we'll get that
out the way now.
(Dani) It's just incredible
how fast and how strong
our kind of
relationship's become.
And I just couldn't imagine
any of the other girls
having a connection like ours.
[instrumental music]
You're nice and tall.
- How are you?
- Hi, Dani.
(male narrator) 22-year-old
marketing assistant Dani
left an impression
from the get-go.
- I'm quite loud.
- Right.
(Dani)
Probably the wrong thing to say
when you first meet someone.
♪ Who's that girl? ♪
(male narrator)
She made waves
at the very first group date.
Dani, would you like
to come for a ride on this kit?
Yes.
(Arthur) It was quite
nice, giving Dani a cuddle.
Feeling pretty lucky.
Feeling pretty special.
Yeah.
- Hello.
- Hi.
(male narrator)
And when Art took her
on her first single date--
Oh, my God,
this is such a beautiful day.
Yeah, it's so nice.
(male narrator) The romantic
flood gates opened..
I want to kiss you.
Go ahead.
[instrumental music]
(male narrator) ...and
they haven't ever closed.
(Dani) Kissing Art is
just great in general.
They're definitely
getting better and better.
That was our day.
And I got a rose.
Did you get the kiss?
I did.
(male narrator) But her
kiss-and-tell approach..
Basically, he just like
"You're amazing, I think
I'd get along with you
I can see myself

Just comes across
a little bit braggy.
A glass of wine was in my hand.

I finished uni,
I studied in Denudin, same as--
He went to uni coll as well.

Well, you never..
Well, he's four
years older than me.

Dani knocks over a glass

I'd say it would definitely
be one of her advantages.
So she has got a
chance, in other words?
Oh, definitely.
I really like Dani.
(Arthur) I'm just
completely honest with him.
And I kind of explained
to him that there's nothing
that these girls can do to win
apart from just be themselves.
You know, Dani has been doing
that from the very start.
And yeah, she's a lovely girl.
This is a little present
from me to you, mom.
Oh, my goodness.
Because I've missed you so much.
Oh, my goodness.
I'm going to cry again.

It is.
It was meant to be.
Yay!
It's beautiful.
She's kind of surprised me.
She is really driven
and really mature for her age.
And just a really good
person to be around.
Got a cool dad.
Yeah, the dad's a bit of a shame
but you can't win them all, eh?
I think the biggest
worry that I've had
is the fact that
you might have got
a little bit caught up in
this whole make-believe world.
The way I've kind of
approached the whole situation
is just to be completely open
about everything, really.
'I'm not going to
change who I am.'
'I am the way I am.'
Do you feel that he's being
honest and truthful with you?
Yeah, I do feel like he's
really open and honest.
I mean, because he's trying
to find someone as well
and he needs to make sure
that he's gonna be compatible
with these girls.
So I do feel like
he's been really good
at answering
any questions
or doubts I've had.
(Dani) I think my parents

for what I deserve.
And I think they're

So, what do you think of Art?
I think he's really cool.
- Yeah?
- Yeah.
- You like him?
- Yep.
(Dani)
It's good to finally
get Michelle on her own
so I can ask her
what she thinks.
Because obviously, being my
twin sister and my best friend
her opinion probably
counts the most.
What I kind of expected, but
different to your usual type
but really cool.
(Dani) While I was quite
immature, I didn't have
the best taste in guys.
So not the most
impressive bunch.
It's quite embarrassing,
actually
when I look back on it.
There's only really one word
to describe them
and it's **** holes.
Just **** heads.
So, yeah, not the nicest.
So you think we're a good fit?

I think you guys are.
- That's good.
- Yeah.
I hope everyone else does, too.
So can I ask you what your
thoughts are about Danielle?
I really like Dani.
(Arthur)
So now we're in the lounge
and I'm sitting on a chair
and next to me, all four
parents sitting on a couch
forming an interrogation panel.
When I first met Dani,
I just thought she was pretty..
I feel like I'm in
front of a firing squad.
It's a tough crowd.
I think some of them are feeling
a little bit dubious about me.
Do you see a future
with Danielle?
Do you think there's
a possibility
that you can move on with it?
I definitely do.
And actually coming here today
and just seeing your family
has made me think that
even more so, yeah.
- I do.
- That's good to know.
How will you feel
if you don't get picked?
If you come second?
- I'll be gutted.
- Yeah?
Yep, I will be.
I'll be really sad.
I feel he's got a genuine
connection with me
but it is really hard
when he goes
on dates with other girls.
Like, I just feel like
ours can't be beat.
But I don't know if it's
just because I'm in it
and I feel that way.
I don't know how he feels
about the other girls.
That would be hard, eh?
- Yeah.
- Annoying.
Yeah.
It is so hard.
It's so stressful.
(Arthur) 'I feel like I've
kind of done for myself'
what I wanted to do.
Now I'm ready to try
and find someone
to share my life with.
And do you think
that this is being
the right forum for that?
(Arthur)
Amanda locks eyes with me
very much on the front foot.
Really quite direct
with her questions
and grilling me quite intensely.
I've kind of really struggled
with the whole concept of it.
And I'm worried about
Danielle's self-worth
'because,
from where I looked at it'
'you're in a position
where you're determining'
who is to be loved
and who isn't.
And I wonder how healthy that
is for the women involved.
'You know, competing with
other women for a man'
'is very foreign for me.'
[instrumental music]
I've kind of really struggled
with the whole concept of it.
'You know, competing
with other women'
'for a man
is very foreign for me.'
(Arthur) There are
questions flying at me
from every direction.
Notably from Amanda,
Dani's stepmom
who raises quite a few concerns.
I haven't really known
how to handle that
except that, as Mark asked me,
that we do this for Danielle.
'And if that makes
Danielle happy, okay.'
'And at the end of
the day, of course'
'it's Danielle's decision.'
(Arthur)
That's really full-on.
There are questions that I think
I would like my family
to be asking someone, you know
if they were in
the same position
because, you know,
they obviously
really care about Dani.
And I wonder about you,
breaking up
with one woman a week.
- Or 20 women, boom.
- 'Yeah.'
My initial reaction was,
what kind of ass
would do something like that?
And now that I've
met you, I can see
that you've probably
struggled with this.
But it is what it is.
Yeah.
I don't know how it's
all going to end up.
But I'm only going
to choose one girl.
There's only gonna be one girl.
[Amanda laughs]
- We hope so.
- That's good.
Oh, it's so weird.
To be honest, it feels
a wee bit uncomfortable.
'Nothing has prepared me
for this.'
So it's completely new,
and it's scary.
I don't think most men
date 21 women
in their entire lives,
to be honest.
I know.
(Amanda)
'Are you a numbers man?'
'I'm glad you said
it was just dating.'
(Arthur) I completely understand
where Amanda was coming from.
And I hope that they're happy
with what I've been trying
to convey to them.
And yeah, I hope that
I've impressed them
and I hope that they like me.
You're both driven, right?
I see that.
Both want families, but families
take nurturing and caring.
So who gives that?
'Are you going to
be a house husband'
'or is Danielle gonna be?'
I don't know.
I'm so passionate
about being a father
'that I guess if it came
to that, I wouldn't mind'
'being a house husband.'
I'd like to be financially
stable and secure
before I have a family.
'So if everything is in place'
'and I was in a position'
where I could do that, then yeah
I wouldn't mind
doing that, actually.
Art could definitely and quite
possibly be the last guy
that I bring home to my family
and I would love
for that to happen.
And I think they
would love it, too.
Thanks a lot for having me.
Yeah, it was really nice.
And thanks for being
so relaxed, yeah.
Given me a bit of an
insight into Dani's life.
I've enjoyed today, actually
and one thing I have done is
I sort of looked at your picture
and I thought, "Aw, man,
not a pretty boy."
[laughs]
But to be fair, you've got abs.
You know, I've been trying
to get them all my life.
[laughs]
I'd like to have them
around the swimming pool.
You know, showing off.
And I'm like, "Oh, no."
No, no, but you know.
Got to know you.
I've been outside
and I think you're a top bloke
and good luck.
Cheers. Cheers, Robo.
(Dani)
I actually got his approval.
Well, Art got his approval.
And he said it out loud,
in front of everyone.
That meant the world to me.
I was so stoked.
Thanks, guys.
I was hoping to actually
find out some more
embarrassing stories about you.
No, I'm glad no one
embarrassed me, then.
(Amanda)
'No, we can't divulge those.'
'The next meeting.'
I'm definitely starting
to fall for him
after seeing how well
he's got along with my family.
And I just hope that
I get the opportunity
to bring him back, and for
us all to hang out again.
[instrumental music]
(Dani)
So the day's not finished.
We're heading to Ponson Beach
to do some shopping.
Woo-hoo!
I do enjoy going shopping,
and it'll be
really cute to have Art help me.
Oh, wow.
Oh, my God, this is so cool.
We walk in and Dani
is very excited.
This is just like
a kid in a candy store.
How are you feeling after today?
- I'm feeling really good
- Yeah?
- Yeah, it was really cool.
- Did you have fun?
Yeah, I did.
Did anyone grill you?
- Amanda did.
- Did she?
'Amanda grilled me pretty hard.'
Did she?
What did she say?
Oh, she was just really
worried about you.
Just obviously loves you a lot
and just doesn't want you
to get hurt.
(Amanda)
I'm not worried too much
about what Amanda said to Art.
I mean, at the end of the day,
she cares about me
and he cares about me, so
I think that whatever was said
will be fine.
What did you and dad talk about?
We talked about heaps of stuff.
I was a bit nervous when
we went outside to play darts.
- Yeah? Aw.
- Yeah.
But he was really cool.
He's really nice.
So how do you think today went?
Um, yeah, I'm stoked
with how today went.
I'm just happy that I got the
opportunity to bring you here.
I would have been so gutted
if I didn't get a rose
before home visits,
because I just feel like
my family is kind of like
the icing on the cake
to me, you know?
They're like what make me
who I am
'and I'm really proud of them.'
And I like to show my
family off, so yeah.
I'm just glad that you
got to meet them.
- Yeah.
- Yeah.
(Arthur)
Today has been great.
I feel like I've got a huge
insight into Dani's life.
I feel like I know her better.
And meeting Dani's
family was amazing.
They're really,
really cool people.
It's made me like
Dani even more.
Yeah, maybe she's the one.
[laughs]
- I've had such a good day.
- So have I.
- I don't want it to end.
- I know.
(Dani) It's gonna be a long
while until I see Art again
and I'm starting to get
a bit anxious to be apart
for that long.
I really want to be
the last girl standing
and I know that now.
And I am in this now.
I'm in it deep, and I wanna
be here until the end.
Alrighty.
We have to go.
Alrighty.
Alright.
Don't forget your bags.
Get your bags.
All my bags.
Alright.
- Okay, I'll see you.

- When I'm looking at you.
- Yeah.
See you when I'm looking at you.
Art is definitely
the perfect man for me.
I know that now, and I'm
excited to see where it goes
now I have that confirmation.
Yay, we're here.
(male narrator) Coming up..
You excited?
Yeah, nervous and excited.
I could definitely see him
being my future husband.
(male narrator)
A meet-and-greet at Matilda's..
Are you a hot plate or a grill?
Completely grill.
(male narrator) ...serves
up some tough demands.
I just want her to be happy
with what she's done.
- Yeah.
- And I don't want her hurt.
- Yeah.
- That's the way that it is.
[instrumental music]
[instrumental music]
(Matilda) Onetangi Beach
is quite important to me
because my family and I
used to spend a lot of time
on Waiheke during summer.
So it's got quite
nostalgic feelings
associated with it.
So I met Arthur there
because I wanted him
to experience that with me.
- Hi.
- Hi.
- How are you?
- Good, how are you?
Good. Good to see you.
I feel like I haven't
seen you in ages.
I know.
I haven't seen you in ages.
- How have you been?
- Really good.
(Matlida) I always get
butterflies when I see Arthur.
He sort of makes me
feel a little bit, like..
Not nervous anymore, but just
still a bit kind of jittery.
So I'm meeting your dad today.
Yeah, how are you feeling?
- You a bit nervous?
- I'm a little bit nervous.
(Matilda) My parents
divorced when I was about 13
and they don't
really speak anymore.
I'm so, so close with my dad.
He's one of my best friends.
We hang out all the time.
If dad didn't like Arthur
that would be a deal breaker.
Just a few tips with old Ken.
First, um, if he makes a
joke, just laugh.
Even if you don't find
it funny, just laugh.
How bad are his jokes?
They are funny,
but it's just like they're the same ones
you know, that I've heard
for 24 years of my life.
So, but I might find him funny.
Yeah, yeah you probably
will, actually. He's funny.
(Matilda)
Dad has never really met
any of my other boyfriends.
He met one when I brought him
'round for dinner
and it was incredibly awkward
and he didn't really like him.
So I hope that dad
really likes Art.
And my best friend Georgie
will be there, too
and you'll love her.
She's amazing.
She's really similar to me.
So, amazing obviously.
Oh, okay, cool.
I've had a very strong
connection with Matilda
from the start.
So I'm a little bit apprehensive
about meeting her family
because I really do wanna
make a good impression.
Alright, you ready?
- I'm ready.
- Okay, let's go.
(Matilda) I feel like Arthur
and I are really close.
So for dad to say that
he didn't like Arthur
it would be really hard
for me to say goodbye to him.
[instrumental music]
- Hi.
- Hi.
My heart's just like..
(male narrator)
She caught Arthur's eye early.
I was wonderin' if I
could steal Matilda.
Would you like to come
with me for a walk?
(male narrator) And was the first
ever New Zealand bachelorette
to receive a rose.
I definitely will.
Thank you.
You're welcome.
We have a really good
connection already.
Three, two, one!
[Matilda screams]
(male narrator)
And a leap of faith
on a breathtaking first date..
Whoa, we're right on top.
(male narrator) ...proved what
heights Matilda was willing
to climb to win
Arthur's affections.
Matilda, I've had such
a good time today.
(Matilda)
'So have I.'
You're just so much fun.
(Matlida)
I feel like we figured out
that we can laugh together
and are comfortable
around each other
but I think there's
a bit of a chance
of getting friend-zoned.
(male narrator) So Matilda
tried her hand at poetry..
"This tropical storm
"Makes my heart go boom for you.
Give me a rose now."
[laughs]
(male narrator) ...and won Art
over with a heartfelt haiku.
The haiku worked!
[instrumental music]
[Matilda screams]
(male narrator)
Then an horrific horse fall..
(Arthur)
I just hope she's gonna be okay
and I hope she's gonna carry on
on this whole journey.
(male narrator)
...left her down, but not out.
Aww.
- Hi.
- Hi.
How are you?
I do really want to be here
and I'm not going to go home
just because of this
bump in the road.
Because I know that we sort
of joke around and stuff
and that's fun, but I do
actually really like you
and I'm in it for the long haul.
I think I'm gonna be smiling
for the rest of the night.
(male narrator) Her connection
with Arthur deepened
on her second single date.
I'm gonna kiss you.
Good.
(Matilda) Definitely
out of the friend zone.
I don't think you kiss
your friends like that.
I can already
picture us together
and if I don't
end up with Arthur
I think I will be really
hurt and just gutted.
Yay, we're here.
You excited?
Yeah, nervous and excited.
Yeah, I'm getting
a little bit nervous, too.
Alright, you ready?
Yeah.
Let's do it.
Hello, hello.
- Hi!
- Hello.
Hi.
- Ken. How are you, Art?
- Art.
- Good, nice to meet you.
- Nice to meet you.
Hey, darling.
- Lovely to see you.
- You too.
- How are you?
- Yeah, you two look good.
(Matilda) Dad and Art
meet for the first time
and it's a little bit awkward.
[laughs]
So you're back on Waiheke.
Well, it was a bit of
a homecoming, I must confess.
Nothing's changed.
Nothing has changed.
- Really?
- Yeah.
He showed me
all the sights on the way over.
"And there's the
fruit and veg shop"
which is still where
the fruit and veg shop.
He was like, "This is
where I used to buy
my Chinese takeaway."
[laughs]
- How interesting.
- 'Yeah.'
Well, it was at one stage
practically the only
out-of-season food outlet
on the island.
So, you had Chinese takeaway--
What's an "out-of-season
food outlet"?
Food outlet
that's out of season.
[laughs]
Makes sense when
you think about it.
(Arthur)
Ken is a character.
From the very start,
he makes me feel at ease
you know, joking around.
Alright, do you guys want
to get the barbecue sorted
and we'll get the..
We're on salad.
You are on barbecue.
I'm on barbecue.
Let's go, Ken.
Let's do it.
[giggles]
Now the end one's off,
but that's alright.
Like it over an
open flame, anyway.
It's your barbecue,
Ken, I don't want to--
Well, it is--
I don't want to tread
on your toes.
Yeah.
Dad gets very protective
of anything
to do with barbecues.
He just kind of sees
that as his thing.
So seeing him share the barbecue
with Art was quite metaphorical
and sort of handing
over the tongs
and passing the baton
sort of thing.
It was really nice to see.
So, what do you think?
He's really nice.
I like him, he's cool.
Okay, good.
He's just really funny
and easy to get along with.
Yeah, yeah.
Same sense of humor as you.
Yeah, which is definitely a plus
because it's kind of
a weird sense of humor
so it's nice that
someone else has it, too.
Yeah, at least it
means he'll get along
with your dad.
Yeah, yeah, exactly.
(Matilda)
My dad would love it if I
meet someone really special
that he trusted, too,
because then I think
that would just put him at ease
and feel like I'm always
being looked after
whether my dad's
there with me or not.
It's really important
to me that him and the Ken--
- Get along.
- Yeah.
Because as you know,
Ken's my bezzie.
It's just nice to see your
friend happy, you know?
You can always tell straight
away a vibe from someone
and they're definitely
happy together.
I only just met him
and I can tell that
so that's a good sign.
Well, it looks like they're
getting along great.
(Arthur)
Ken loves his barbecue
and he hands me the tongs.
Fingers crossed
I don't let him down.
You a hot plate or a grill man?
Uh, completely grill.
- Ooo.
- But never mind.
We're doing the hot plate.
(Arthur)
Hot plate or a grill.
Who knew it was a big deal?
I thought I was doing the
right thing, but I guess not.
This date could be over
before it's even begun.
[instrumental music]
Are you a hot plate
or a grill man?
Uh, completely grill.
- Ooo.
- But never mind.
We're doing the hot plate.
(Arthur) I decide to take
the lead on the barbecue
and I don't think
Ken's that impressed.
So he takes over.
What about that one?
All going?
- I think so.
- Beautiful.
- Yeah.
- Men and their barbecues.
- It's so cute.
- Yeah.
We gotta do that,
and then I'm gonna
transfer those onto there.
Get a little bit of
browning going, okay?
Science.
And Bob's your Auntie.
Bob's my Auntie.
Cool.
Having met Ken, I can really see
where Matilda gets her
sense of humor from.
And it's really nice to see that
and get a bit of a gauge
on her social background
from meeting Georgie.
And yeah, I feel like I know
Matilda a lot better now.
Seems like dad's
completely taken over now.
Yeah.
He's pushed Art to the side.
I know.
Art had his chance for a while
but he's obviously
messed that up so..
[laughs]
(Ken)
He seems a nice guy.
I'd like to think
that he would know
and understand Matilda.
And he would like her
for the incredible person
that she is.
As a barbecue man yourself
what would you
think of the lamb?
You mean do I think it's cooked?
Yes.
Can I have a go with the tongs?
Please, sir.
Well, okay.
I'd say they're already there.
But I know you like well-done..
- So it might not be..
- So you're pandering to me.
[Matilda laughs]
Hm..
Look, I think you
can eat this one, Ken.
I'm gonna trust you
on this occasion.
God, this is a huge deal.
Yeah, we're done.
We're ready.
(Ken)
'We are done. Okay.'
They seem to be getting
on like a house on fire
which is perfect and that's
making me feel more at ease.
Can I make a toast?
- Yeah.
- Please do.
To thank you both
so much for coming.
'And thanks for cooking
the meat, it looks amazing.'
- Yeah.
- Are you okay?
No, I dropped my serviette.
- Oh, that's alright.
- Oh, no.
You know what?
It's been more than a pleasure.
It's just so lovely to,
you know, catch up with you
and really lovely to meet you.
Yeah.
And I think the both of you
look fabulous.
And I wish the both
of you the best.
- Thanks, dad.
- Thanks, Ken.
- Cheers.
- Ken's blessing.
Yeah, that's so sweet.
(Matilda) It's the first time that
Dad's really acknowledged someone
that I'm quite serious about
and so it really is
really special to me
because he doesn't
often open up like that.
That was delicious.
I thoroughly enjoyed that.
It was amazing.
Well, it was a good team effort.
Yeah, it was.
Maybe we should go
and have a bit of a chat.
- What do you think?
- Sure.
- 'Yeah. I'd like that.'
- Yep.
- Cool.
- Cheers.
(Arthur)
I'm a little bit worried
that dad is gonna grill Arthur
and ask him some hard questions.
I feel like they've
talked quite a lot.
Yeah, what else do they
have to talk about?
That sort of scares
me a little bit
because he's sort of
covered all the topics
that I think he should cover
so..
What else is there?
Yeah, let's just
keep it there, dad.
I know.
We're down to the business end
as far as you're concerned.
Yeah.
Last four.
Yeah.
I like you. I happen to
think you're a good bloke.
You cook lamb pretty well
you're intelligent, easy-going.
I would like her
to be in a situation
when this was finished
to feel happy with the outcome.
And I don't want her hurt.
That's the way that it is.
(Arthur)
Ken's very understanding.
You know, he really appreciates
the position that I'm in.
But at the same time, he is
very protective of his daughter.
And is asking some
pretty big questions.
I really like,
really like Matilda.
So we'll consider it done, then?
[laughs]
Should we shake on that?
[laughs]
I wish it was that simple.
Yes, I know it's not.
And I actually feel for you.
Because I don't know how
the other girls feel.
I know how Matilda feels
knowing that you're probably
going to not please
if not hurt, three others.
I think, for the type
of person that you are
it would sit fairly heavily.
Very, yeah.
It's very uncomfortable.
And something that I'm really
not looking forward to.
(Ken) Arthur comes
across as the real deal.
I didn't feel like I was
being mislead
or conned or anything like that.
I felt like I was
just being spoken to
by a genuine person
to a genuine person.
And that's what I like.
I think that you would
certainly be somebody
that I would quite like
to see her go out with
and see how the
relationship went.
That's what I think.
Thanks.
- Yeah, cheers.
- And good luck.
(Arthur) It's definitely
far more difficult
at the back of my mind
knowing that
I'm meeting these friends
and families
that I'm gonna letting
down not just one person
but also people that they love.
[instrumental music]
It's been a bit of a up-and-down
few weeks, you know?
Has it?
Bit of an emotional
rollercoaster?
Yeah.
It's sort of been really cool.
We've done really cool stuff,
but there hasn't really
been anyone around
to talk to
that's not part of it.
- Do you know what I mean?
- Yeah, yeah.
But what do you reckon?
What do you think of him?
- I like him, actually.
- Yeah.
You guys did get along
really well.
Oh, well. He was..
He made it quite easy, actually.
And he's, I think he's genuine.
And I say that perhaps
mildly surprised
but I think he's
actually genuine.
And I really, yeah, I like him.
Oh, good.
My dad says that
he has a gut feeling
that everything will work out
between the two of us.
Dad's a really good
judge of character
and he's got really
good intuition
with things like this,
so I hope he's right
on this occasion.
Just say..
...that you're not chosen.
'Will you be okay?'
Um, yeah.
I think I'll be really,
really disappointed.
It's just hard
because I have no idea
what he's thinking.
I have no clue, you know?
So I feel like
we're really close
and we've had an
awesome day today
and it's been really cool.
But then he may feel
exactly the same
with three other
people, you know?
So it's just
it's weird only seeing my side.
So I don't know, because I'd
say the other three girls
are all feeling
exactly the same.
- Yep. No doubt, no doubt.
- So..
And I really appreciate
your honestly
and, and you doing this today.
And I love you and thank you
so much for being amazing.
Been a pleasure.
And you don't love me anywhere
half as much as I love you.
- I love you more.
- No, I love you more!
Much more.
- Alright, let's head back.
- Alright.
- Thanks, dad.
- Good luck, sweetheart.
(Ken)
I like the looks
that they exchange.
They are the looks of people
that have got a pretty
fair idea where each other
are coming from.
And I firmly believe
there is a lot
to work with there.
Wonderful, wonderful
to have you.
- It's been a great day.
- Yeah.
- Yeah, it's been awesome.
- Absolutely great day.
- Bye, dad.
- Bye-bye, sweetheart.
I love you.
- You look after yourself.
- See you soon.
- Yeah.
- Thanks.
- See you soon.
- Thank you.
- Thanks again.
- Bye-bye, Arthur.
- It was great.
- It was really nice.
Come on, bring it in, mate.
Thanks, mate.
It was a lovely,
lovely, lovely day.
Yeah, it was great to be here.
And we're so glad that you could
come and spend the day with us.
(Ken) If the final
part of the process
is the two of them
in a relationship
then it's really important
for me to know
there are no surprises.
I've met the guy, like the guy
and if they turn out
to be as right for each other
as I think that they are
then I think it'll be fantastic.
[instrumental music]
This is where I went to school
when I was little.
- Yeah.
- It's pretty cute, eh?
It's really cute.
(Arthur)
It's really nice to see
a side of Matilda
that's a lot more relaxed
like in her own comfort zone.
She's calling the shots
on the day, rather than me.
So, yeah, it's really nice.
This is actually
where I broke my other arm
when I was six.
Yeah. fell off
that thing up there.
- Did you?
- Yeah, I did.
You just walked up that
and fell off?
[laughs]
Yeah.
Think I was trying
to maybe climb down that.
And then just took
a bit of a tumble
and I broke my right arm.
(Matilda)
I like Arthur a lot.
I definitely feel
a lot of chemistry.
We've got quite a spark
between us, I think.
I was just a really
uncoordinated child.
- Really?
- Yeah.
I was, like bad at sports.
Couldn't even ride
a two-wheeler, couldn't swim.
I really want to be
one of the last three
because I think Art's amazing
and I think we'd be
perfect together.
So I hope that he sees
the same thing that I do.
- Should we play hopscotch?
- Yeah.
[laughs]
I could definitely see him
being my future husband
if that were
to work out that way.
(Arthur)
'How do you think today went?'
I feel like it went really well.
Yeah, it was really
nice to see you and dad
getting along so well.
- Yeah.
- And he really likes you.
[laughs]
Are you surprised?
[laughs]
No.
That sounded really surprised.
But just, I don't know,
I was expecting him
to sort of like make you
work a bit harder for it.
But he sort of just seemed
to instantly warm to you.
(Matilda)
The day has been just amazing.
It couldn't have gone better
and it was my ideal setting.
And I'm just on cloud nine
that it's gone so well
and everyone loves him.
I feel like I know you
a bit better, as well.
Yeah, I hope so 'cause..
Um, it was good to show you
where I came from.
Yeah, exactly.
(Arthur) I definitely
feel closer to Matilda
and I feel like I do know her
a lot better.
Probably won't see
you for a while now.
No, not for a few days.
(Matilda) I feel like Arthur
and I are really close
and getting closer
every time I see him.
Alright.
Alright.
(Matilda) I feel like I've
been completely myself with Art
and shown him my family
and my friends.
It's still really early days

(Arthur) I've met four incredible
women through this experience.
Women that I really
do have feelings for.
I can't believe how lucky
I am to have met them.

(Dani) So I'm sitting

(Arthur) I think you can

If I want to get to

I think it's vital that
I get to know her family.
I guess the scary thing
about home visits is that
if it doesn't all work out,
and I don't get along with them
or they don't get along with me
you know,
it's a determining factor
in a relationship.
So there's lots
of pressure on me

and I'm so happy to see him.
He looks amazing, as usual.

with one woman a week.
What kind of ass would
do something like that?
[instrumental music]
Hello.
- Hello.
- Hi.
- This is Art, everyone.
- Hi.
(Arthur) I walk in there,
and there's her stepdad, her mom..
Hi, Michelle.
(Arthur)
...her twin sister..
- I'm Amanda.
- Amanda, hi.
(Arthur)
...Her stepmom..
Mark.
(Arthur)
...and her dad.
Going well, how are you?
Yeah, very well, thanks.
(Arthur)
I am kind of expecting
some difficult questions
today, yeah.
I'm hoping I'm not going
to get grilled too hard.
But I definitely think
it's a possibility.
What brought you up to Auckland?
I finished uni,
I studied in Denudin, same as--
He went to uni coll as well.
- 'Oh, really?'
- Oh, really?
Well, you never..
Well, he's four
years older than me.
Yeah, I'm 26.
(female #1)
'Right, okay.'
(Dani)
My dad looks a little bit
skeptical at this stage.
You can tell that both
my dad and my stepdad
are a bit like standoffish.
(Arthur) 'It's kind of like the
land of opportunity up here.'
- 'Yeah.'
- Yeah.
Ooh!
- That's..
- I'm sorry!
(Arthur)
'Double break.'
(Arthur)
Dani knocks over a glass
and I'm just thinking
"Thank God that wasn't me."
It's a party now.
That would have been so annoying
if it was me.
It would not be
a good first impression.
I just think it's good
for you to come out
and have a chat with me, mate.
Just me and you on our own.
Just find out who you are
where you want to go
in your life.
- Yeah?
- Sort of, man, yeah.
(Arthur)
Mark asks me outside
for a game of darts.
And I'm kind of thinking
"Uh, oh. What am I in for?"
First you gotta go
stand up there
and I'm going to throw
a couple of darts at you.
I'll miss your ear but I'll
guess I'll have a crack at it.
I'll miss you by about that.
No, I'm just joking.
Oh, ****
(Dani)
I'm a little bit nervous
only because my dad comes
across quite full-on.
So I just hope that
it's Art's type of person
and that they have
a really nice chat.
So what do you want out of life?
I want to be
comfortable financially.
'wanna have someone
to share that with'
who's like a best mate.
And I want a family.
Yeah, sweet.
(Michelle) Do you reckon
Dad's got him pinned
up against the dart board?
[laughs]
- 'Quite literally.'
- Yeah.
Is that what he meant
by playing darts?
(female #1) 'No,
I'm hoping it's going really well.'
Do you think they'll get along?
Yeah, for sure.
I'm confident.
I hope he's really grilling him.
Putting the heat on him.
These girls.
Yeah?
How are the other three?
They're all pretty good
to look at.
Yeah.
They're all fun.
- Yeah.
- You know?
Probably not as fun as Dani.
(Mark) 'So you'd say that might
be one of her advantages?'
I'd say it would definitely
be one of her advantages.
So she has got a
chance, in other words?
Oh, definitely.
I really like Dani.
(Arthur) I'm just
completely honest with him.
And I kind of explained
to him that there's nothing
that these girls can do to win
apart from just be themselves.
You know, Dani has been doing
that from the very start.
And yeah, she's a lovely girl.
This is a little present
from me to you, mom.
Oh, my goodness.
Because I've missed you so much.
Oh, my goodness.
I'm going to cry again.
Oh, beautiful.
Oh, my goodness.
Oh, thank you so much, Dani.
You're so precious.
Now I'm going to
mess up my makeup.
Oh, thank you so much
for this, sweetheart.
It's a perfect fit
on you, as well.
It is.
It was meant to be.
Yay!
It's beautiful.
She's kind of surprised me.
She is really driven
and really mature for her age.
And just a really good
person to be around.
Got a cool dad.
Yeah, the dad's a bit of a shame
but you can't win them all, eh?
I think the biggest
worry that I've had
is the fact that
you might have got
a little bit caught up in
this whole make-believe world.
The way I've kind of
approached the whole situation
is just to be completely open
about everything, really.
'I'm not going to
change who I am.'
'I am the way I am.'
Do you feel that he's being
honest and truthful with you?
Yeah, I do feel like he's
really open and honest.
I mean, because he's trying
to find someone as well
and he needs to make sure
that he's gonna be compatible
with these girls.
So I do feel like
he's been really good
at answering
any questions
or doubts I've had.
(Dani) I think my parents
have a really high expectation
for what I deserve.
And I think they're
definitely going to be able
to tell if Art's the type
of person that they think
I should be dating.
So, what do you think of Art?
I think he's really cool.
- Yeah?
- Yeah.
- You like him?
- Yep.
(Dani)
It's good to finally
get Michelle on her own
so I can ask her
what she thinks.
Because obviously, being my
twin sister and my best friend
her opinion probably
counts the most.
What I kind of expected, but
different to your usual type
but really cool.
(Dani) While I was quite
immature, I didn't have
the best taste in guys.
So not the most
impressive bunch.
It's quite embarrassing,
actually
when I look back on it.
There's only really one word
to describe them
and it's **** holes.
Just **** heads.
So, yeah, not the nicest.
So you think we're a good fit?
Yeah.
I think you guys are.
- That's good.
- Yeah.
I hope everyone else does, too.
So can I ask you what your
thoughts are about Danielle?
I really like Dani.
(Arthur)
So now we're in the lounge
and I'm sitting on a chair
and next to me, all four
parents sitting on a couch
forming an interrogation panel.
When I first met Dani,
I just thought she was pretty..
I feel like I'm in
front of a firing squad.
It's a tough crowd.
I think some of them are feeling
a little bit dubious about me.
Do you see a future
with Danielle?
Do you think there's
a possibility
that you can move on with it?
I definitely do.
And actually coming here today
and just seeing your family
has made me think that
even more so, yeah.
- I do.
- That's good to know.
How will you feel
if you don't get picked?
If you come second?
- I'll be gutted.
- Yeah?
Yep, I will be.
I'll be really sad.
I feel he's got a genuine
connection with me
but it is really hard
when he goes
on dates with other girls.
Like, I just feel like
ours can't be beat.
But I don't know if it's
just because I'm in it
and I feel that way.
I don't know how he feels
about the other girls.
That would be hard, eh?
- Yeah.
- Annoying.
Yeah.
It is so hard.
It's so stressful.
(Arthur) 'I feel like I've
kind of done for myself'
what I wanted to do.
Now I'm ready to try
and find someone
to share my life with.
And do you think
that this is being
the right forum for that?
(Arthur)
Amanda locks eyes with me
very much on the front foot.
Really quite direct
with her questions
and grilling me quite intensely.
I've kind of really struggled
with the whole concept of it.
And I'm worried about
Danielle's self-worth
'because,
from where I looked at it'
'you're in a position
where you're determining'
who is to be loved
and who isn't.
And I wonder how healthy that
is for the women involved.
'You know, competing with
other women for a man'
'is very foreign for me.'
[instrumental music]
I've kind of really struggled
with the whole concept of it.
'You know, competing
with other women'
'for a man
is very foreign for me.'
(Arthur) There are
questions flying at me
from every direction.
Notably from Amanda,
Dani's stepmom
who raises quite a few concerns.
I haven't really known
how to handle that
except that, as Mark asked me,
that we do this for Danielle.
'And if that makes
Danielle happy, okay.'
'And at the end of
the day, of course'
'it's Danielle's decision.'
(Arthur)
That's really full-on.
There are questions that I think
I would like my family
to be asking someone, you know
if they were in
the same position
because, you know,
they obviously
really care about Dani.
And I wonder about you,
breaking up
with one woman a week.
- Or 20 women, boom.
- 'Yeah.'
My initial reaction was,
what kind of ass
would do something like that?
And now that I've
met you, I can see
that you've probably
struggled with this.
But it is what it is.
Yeah.
I don't know how it's
all going to end up.
But I'm only going
to choose one girl.
There's only gonna be one girl.
[Amanda laughs]
- We hope so.
- That's good.
Oh, it's so weird.
To be honest, it feels
a wee bit uncomfortable.
'Nothing has prepared me
for this.'
So it's completely new,
and it's scary.
I don't think most men
date 21 women
in their entire lives,
to be honest.
I know.
(Amanda)
'Are you a numbers man?'
'I'm glad you said
it was just dating.'
(Arthur) I completely understand
where Amanda was coming from.
And I hope that they're happy
with what I've been trying
to convey to them.
And yeah, I hope that
I've impressed them
and I hope that they like me.
You're both driven, right?
I see that.
Both want families, but families
take nurturing and caring.
So who gives that?
'Are you going to
be a house husband'
'or is Danielle gonna be?'
I don't know.
I'm so passionate
about being a father
'that I guess if it came
to that, I wouldn't mind'
'being a house husband.'
I'd like to be financially
stable and secure
before I have a family.
'So if everything is in place'
'and I was in a position'
where I could do that, then yeah
I wouldn't mind
doing that, actually.
Art could definitely and quite
possibly be the last guy
that I bring home to my family
and I would love
for that to happen.
And I think they
would love it, too.
Thanks a lot for having me.
Yeah, it was really nice.
And thanks for being
so relaxed, yeah.
Given me a bit of an
insight into Dani's life.
I've enjoyed today, actually
and one thing I have done is
I sort of looked at your picture
and I thought, "Aw, man,
not a pretty boy."
[laughs]
But to be fair, you've got abs.
You know, I've been trying
to get them all my life.
[laughs]
I'd like to have them
around the swimming pool.
You know, showing off.
And I'm like, "Oh, no."
No, no, but you know.
Got to know you.
I've been outside
and I think you're a top bloke
and good luck.
Cheers. Cheers, Robo.
(Dani)
I actually got his approval.
Well, Art got his approval.
And he said it out loud,
in front of everyone.
That meant the world to me.
I was so stoked.
Thanks, guys.
I was hoping to actually
find out some more
embarrassing stories about you.
No, I'm glad no one
embarrassed me, then.
(Amanda)
'No, we can't divulge those.'
'The next meeting.'
I'm definitely starting
to fall for him
after seeing how well
he's got along with my family.
And I just hope that
I get the opportunity
to bring him back, and for
us all to hang out again.
[instrumental music]
(Dani)
So the day's not finished.
We're heading to Ponson Beach
to do some shopping.
Woo-hoo!
I do enjoy going shopping,
and it'll be
really cute to have Art help me.
Oh, wow.
Oh, my God, this is so cool.
We walk in and Dani
is very excited.
This is just like
a kid in a candy store.
How are you feeling after today?
- I'm feeling really good
- Yeah?
- Yeah, it was really cool.
- Did you have fun?
Yeah, I did.
Did anyone grill you?
- Amanda did.
- Did she?
'Amanda grilled me pretty hard.'
Did she?
What did she say?
Oh, she was just really
worried about you.
Just obviously loves you a lot
and just doesn't want you
to get hurt.
(Amanda)
I'm not worried too much
about what Amanda said to Art.
I mean, at the end of the day,
she cares about me
and he cares about me, so
I think that whatever was said
will be fine.
What did you and dad talk about?
We talked about heaps of stuff.
I was a bit nervous when
we went outside to play darts.
- Yeah? Aw.
- Yeah.
But he was really cool.
He's really nice.
So how do you think today went?
Um, yeah, I'm stoked
with how today went.
I'm just happy that I got the
opportunity to bring you here.
I would have been so gutted
if I didn't get a rose
before home visits,
because I just feel like
my family is kind of like
the icing on the cake
to me, you know?
They're like what make me
who I am
'and I'm really proud of them.'
And I like to show my
family off, so yeah.
I'm just glad that you
got to meet them.
- Yeah.
- Yeah.
(Arthur)
Today has been great.
I feel like I've got a huge
insight into Dani's life.
I feel like I know her better.
And meeting Dani's
family was amazing.
They're really,
really cool people.
It's made me like
Dani even more.
Yeah, maybe she's the one.
[laughs]
- I've had such a good day.
- So have I.
- I don't want it to end.
- I know.
(Dani) It's gonna be a long
while until I see Art again
and I'm starting to get
a bit anxious to be apart
for that long.
I really want to be
the last girl standing
and I know that now.
And I am in this now.
I'm in it deep, and I wanna
be here until the end.
Alrighty.
We have to go.
Alrighty.
Alright.
Don't forget your bags.
Get your bags.
All my bags.
Alright.
- Okay, I'll see you.
- Bye.
- When I'm looking at you.
- Yeah.
See you when I'm looking at you.
Art is definitely
the perfect man for me.
I know that now, and I'm
excited to see where it goes
now I have that confirmation.
Yay, we're here.
(male narrator) Coming up..
You excited?
Yeah, nervous and excited.
I could definitely see him
being my future husband.
(male narrator)
A meet-and-greet at Matilda's..
Are you a hot plate or a grill?
Completely grill.
(male narrator) ...serves
up some tough demands.
I just want her to be happy
with what she's done.
- Yeah.
- And I don't want her hurt.
- Yeah.
- That's the way that it is.
[instrumental music]
[instrumental music]
(Matilda) Onetangi Beach
is quite important to me
because my family and I
used to spend a lot of time
on Waiheke during summer.
So it's got quite
nostalgic feelings
associated with it.
So I met Arthur there
because I wanted him
to experience that with me.
- Hi.
- Hi.
- How are you?
- Good, how are you?
Good. Good to see you.
I feel like I haven't
seen you in ages.
I know.
I haven't seen you in ages.
- How have you been?
- Really good.
(Matlida) I always get
butterflies when I see Arthur.
He sort of makes me
feel a little bit, like..
Not nervous anymore, but just
still a bit kind of jittery.
So I'm meeting your dad today.
Yeah, how are you feeling?
- You a bit nervous?
- I'm a little bit nervous.
(Matilda) My parents
divorced when I was about 13
and they don't
really speak anymore.
I'm so, so close with my dad.
He's one of my best friends.
We hang out all the time.
If dad didn't like Arthur
that would be a deal breaker.
Just a few tips with old Ken.
First, um, if he makes a
joke, just laugh.
Even if you don't find
it funny, just laugh.
How bad are his jokes?
They are funny,
but it's just like they're the same ones
you know, that I've heard
for 24 years of my life.
So, but I might find him funny.
Yeah, yeah you probably
will, actually. He's funny.
(Matilda)
Dad has never really met
any of my other boyfriends.
He met one when I brought him
'round for dinner
and it was incredibly awkward
and he didn't really like him.
So I hope that dad
really likes Art.
And my best friend Georgie
will be there, too
and you'll love her.
She's amazing.
She's really similar to me.
So, amazing obviously.
Oh, okay, cool.
I've had a very strong
connection with Matilda
from the start.
So I'm a little bit apprehensive
about meeting her family
because I really do wanna
make a good impression.
Alright, you ready?
- I'm ready.
- Okay, let's go.
(Matilda) I feel like Arthur
and I are really close.
So for dad to say that
he didn't like Arthur
it would be really hard
for me to say goodbye to him.
[instrumental music]
- Hi.
- Hi.
My heart's just like..
(male narrator)
She caught Arthur's eye early.
I was wonderin' if I
could steal Matilda.
Would you like to come
with me for a walk?
(male narrator) And was the first
ever New Zealand bachelorette
to receive a rose.
I definitely will.
Thank you.
You're welcome.
We have a really good
connection already.
Three, two, one!
[Matilda screams]
(male narrator)
And a leap of faith
on a breathtaking first date..
Whoa, we're right on top.
(male narrator) ...proved what
heights Matilda was willing
to climb to win
Arthur's affections.
Matilda, I've had such
a good time today.
(Matilda)
'So have I.'
You're just so much fun.
(Matlida)
I feel like we figured out
that we can laugh together
and are comfortable
around each other
but I think there's
a bit of a chance
of getting friend-zoned.
(male narrator) So Matilda
tried her hand at poetry..
"This tropical storm
"Makes my heart go boom for you.
Give me a rose now."
[laughs]
(male narrator) ...and won Art
over with a heartfelt haiku.
The haiku worked!
[instrumental music]
[Matilda screams]
(male narrator)
Then an horrific horse fall..
(Arthur)
I just hope she's gonna be okay
and I hope she's gonna carry on
on this whole journey.
(male narrator)
...left her down, but not out.
Aww.
- Hi.
- Hi.
How are you?
I do really want to be here
and I'm not going to go home
just because of this
bump in the road.
Because I know that we sort
of joke around and stuff
and that's fun, but I do
actually really like you
and I'm in it for the long haul.
I think I'm gonna be smiling
for the rest of the night.
(male narrator) Her connection
with Arthur deepened
on her second single date.
I'm gonna kiss you.
Good.
(Matilda) Definitely
out of the friend zone.
I don't think you kiss
your friends like that.
I can already
picture us together
and if I don't
end up with Arthur
I think I will be really
hurt and just gutted.
Yay, we're here.
You excited?
Yeah, nervous and excited.
Yeah, I'm getting
a little bit nervous, too.
Alright, you ready?
Yeah.
Let's do it.
Hello, hello.
- Hi!
- Hello.
Hi.
- Ken. How are you, Art?
- Art.
- Good, nice to meet you.
- Nice to meet you.
Hey, darling.
- Lovely to see you.
- You too.
- How are you?
- Yeah, you two look good.
(Matilda) Dad and Art
meet for the first time
and it's a little bit awkward.
[laughs]
So you're back on Waiheke.
Well, it was a bit of
a homecoming, I must confess.
Nothing's changed.
Nothing has changed.
- Really?
- Yeah.
He showed me
all the sights on the way over.
"And there's the
fruit and veg shop"
which is still where
the fruit and veg shop.
He was like, "This is
where I used to buy
my Chinese takeaway."
[laughs]
- How interesting.
- 'Yeah.'
Well, it was at one stage
practically the only
out-of-season food outlet
on the island.
So, you had Chinese takeaway--
What's an "out-of-season
food outlet"?
Food outlet
that's out of season.
[laughs]
Makes sense when
you think about it.
(Arthur)
Ken is a character.
From the very start,
he makes me feel at ease
you know, joking around.
Alright, do you guys want
to get the barbecue sorted
and we'll get the..
We're on salad.
You are on barbecue.
I'm on barbecue.
Let's go, Ken.
Let's do it.
[giggles]
Now the end one's off,
but that's alright.
Like it over an
open flame, anyway.
It's your barbecue,
Ken, I don't want to--
Well, it is--
I don't want to tread
on your toes.
Yeah.
Dad gets very protective
of anything
to do with barbecues.
He just kind of sees
that as his thing.
So seeing him share the barbecue
with Art was quite metaphorical
and sort of handing
over the tongs
and passing the baton
sort of thing.
It was really nice to see.
So, what do you think?
He's really nice.
I like him, he's cool.
Okay, good.
He's just really funny
and easy to get along with.
Yeah, yeah.
Same sense of humor as you.
Yeah, which is definitely a plus
because it's kind of
a weird sense of humor
so it's nice that
someone else has it, too.
Yeah, at least it
means he'll get along
with your dad.
Yeah, yeah, exactly.
(Matilda)
My dad would love it if I
meet someone really special
that he trusted, too,
because then I think
that would just put him at ease
and feel like I'm always
being looked after
whether my dad's
there with me or not.
It's really important
to me that him and the Ken--
- Get along.
- Yeah.
Because as you know,
Ken's my bezzie.
It's just nice to see your
friend happy, you know?
You can always tell straight
away a vibe from someone
and they're definitely
happy together.
I only just met him
and I can tell that
so that's a good sign.
Well, it looks like they're
getting along great.
(Arthur)
Ken loves his barbecue
and he hands me the tongs.
Fingers crossed
I don't let him down.
You a hot plate or a grill man?
Uh, completely grill.
- Ooo.
- But never mind.
We're doing the hot plate.
(Arthur)
Hot plate or a grill.
Who knew it was a big deal?
I thought I was doing the
right thing, but I guess not.
This date could be over
before it's even begun.
[instrumental music]
Are you a hot plate
or a grill man?
Uh, completely grill.
- Ooo.
- But never mind.
We're doing the hot plate.
(Arthur) I decide to take
the lead on the barbecue
and I don't think
Ken's that impressed.
So he takes over.
What about that one?
All going?
- I think so.
- Beautiful.
- Yeah.
- Men and their barbecues.
- It's so cute.
- Yeah.
We gotta do that,
and then I'm gonna
transfer those onto there.
Get a little bit of
browning going, okay?
Science.
And Bob's your Auntie.
Bob's my Auntie.
Cool.
Having met Ken, I can really see
where Matilda gets her
sense of humor from.
And it's really nice to see that
and get a bit of a gauge
on her social background
from meeting Georgie.
And yeah, I feel like I know
Matilda a lot better now.
Seems like dad's
completely taken over now.
Yeah.
He's pushed Art to the side.
I know.
Art had his chance for a while
but he's obviously
messed that up so..
[laughs]
(Ken)
He seems a nice guy.
I'd like to think
that he would know
and understand Matilda.
And he would like her
for the incredible person
that she is.
As a barbecue man yourself
what would you
think of the lamb?
You mean do I think it's cooked?
Yes.
Can I have a go with the tongs?
Please, sir.
Well, okay.
I'd say they're already there.
But I know you like well-done..
- So it might not be..
- So you're pandering to me.
[Matilda laughs]
Hm..
Look, I think you
can eat this one, Ken.
I'm gonna trust you
on this occasion.
God, this is a huge deal.
Yeah, we're done.
We're ready.
(Ken)
'We are done. Okay.'
They seem to be getting
on like a house on fire
which is perfect and that's
making me feel more at ease.
Can I make a toast?
- Yeah.
- Please do.
To thank you both
so much for coming.
'And thanks for cooking
the meat, it looks amazing.'
- Yeah.
- Are you okay?
No, I dropped my serviette.
- Oh, that's alright.
- Oh, no.
You know what?
It's been more than a pleasure.
It's just so lovely to,
you know, catch up with you
and really lovely to meet you.
Yeah.
And I think the both of you
look fabulous.
And I wish the both
of you the best.
- Thanks, dad.
- Thanks, Ken.
- Cheers.
- Ken's blessing.
Yeah, that's so sweet.
(Matilda) It's the first time that
Dad's really acknowledged someone
that I'm quite serious about
and so it really is
really special to me
because he doesn't
often open up like that.
That was delicious.
I thoroughly enjoyed that.
It was amazing.
Well, it was a good team effort.
Yeah, it was.
Maybe we should go
and have a bit of a chat.
- What do you think?
- Sure.
- 'Yeah. I'd like that.'
- Yep.
- Cool.
- Cheers.
(Arthur)
I'm a little bit worried
that dad is gonna grill Arthur
and ask him some hard questions.
I feel like they've
talked quite a lot.
Yeah, what else do they
have to talk about?
That sort of scares
me a little bit
because he's sort of
covered all the topics
that I think he should cover
so..
What else is there?
Yeah, let's just
keep it there, dad.
I know.
We're down to the business end
as far as you're concerned.
Yeah.
Last four.
Yeah.
I like you. I happen to
think you're a good bloke.
You cook lamb pretty well
you're intelligent, easy-going.
I would like her
to be in a situation
when this was finished
to feel happy with the outcome.
And I don't want her hurt.
That's the way that it is.
(Arthur)
Ken's very understanding.
You know, he really appreciates
the position that I'm in.
But at the same time, he is
very protective of his daughter.
And is asking some
pretty big questions.
I really like,
really like Matilda.
So we'll consider it done, then?
[laughs]
Should we shake on that?
[laughs]
I wish it was that simple.
Yes, I know it's not.
And I actually feel for you.
Because I don't know how
the other girls feel.
I know how Matilda feels
knowing that you're probably
going to not please
if not hurt, three others.
I think, for the type
of person that you are
it would sit fairly heavily.
Very, yeah.
It's very uncomfortable.
And something that I'm really
not looking forward to.
(Ken) Arthur comes
across as the real deal.
I didn't feel like I was
being mislead
or conned or anything like that.
I felt like I was
just being spoken to
by a genuine person
to a genuine person.
And that's what I like.
I think that you would
certainly be somebody
that I would quite like
to see her go out with
and see how the
relationship went.
That's what I think.
Thanks.
- Yeah, cheers.
- And good luck.
(Arthur) It's definitely
far more difficult
at the back of my mind
knowing that
I'm meeting these friends
and families
that I'm gonna letting
down not just one person
but also people that they love.
[instrumental music]
It's been a bit of a up-and-down
few weeks, you know?
Has it?
Bit of an emotional
rollercoaster?
Yeah.
It's sort of been really cool.
We've done really cool stuff,
but there hasn't really
been anyone around
to talk to
that's not part of it.
- Do you know what I mean?
- Yeah, yeah.
But what do you reckon?
What do you think of him?
- I like him, actually.
- Yeah.
You guys did get along
really well.
Oh, well. He was..
He made it quite easy, actually.
And he's, I think he's genuine.
And I say that perhaps
mildly surprised
but I think he's
actually genuine.
And I really, yeah, I like him.
Oh, good.
My dad says that
he has a gut feeling
that everything will work out
between the two of us.
Dad's a really good
judge of character
and he's got really
good intuition
with things like this,
so I hope he's right
on this occasion.
Just say..
...that you're not chosen.
'Will you be okay?'
Um, yeah.
I think I'll be really,
really disappointed.
It's just hard
because I have no idea
what he's thinking.
I have no clue, you know?
So I feel like
we're really close
and we've had an
awesome day today
and it's been really cool.
But then he may feel
exactly the same
with three other
people, you know?
So it's just
it's weird only seeing my side.
So I don't know, because I'd
say the other three girls
are all feeling
exactly the same.
- Yep. No doubt, no doubt.
- So..
And I really appreciate
your honestly
and, and you doing this today.
And I love you and thank you
so much for being amazing.
Been a pleasure.
And you don't love me anywhere
half as much as I love you.
- I love you more.
- No, I love you more!
Much more.
- Alright, let's head back.
- Alright.
- Thanks, dad.
- Good luck, sweetheart.
(Ken)
I like the looks
that they exchange.
They are the looks of people
that have got a pretty
fair idea where each other
are coming from.
And I firmly believe
there is a lot
to work with there.
Wonderful, wonderful
to have you.
- It's been a great day.
- Yeah.
- Yeah, it's been awesome.
- Absolutely great day.
- Bye, dad.
- Bye-bye, sweetheart.
I love you.
- You look after yourself.
- See you soon.
- Yeah.
- Thanks.
- See you soon.
- Thank you.
- Thanks again.
- Bye-bye, Arthur.
- It was great.
- It was really nice.
Come on, bring it in, mate.
Thanks, mate.
It was a lovely,
lovely, lovely day.
Yeah, it was great to be here.
And we're so glad that you could
come and spend the day with us.
(Ken) If the final
part of the process
is the two of them
in a relationship
then it's really important
for me to know
there are no surprises.
I've met the guy, like the guy
and if they turn out
to be as right for each other
as I think that they are
then I think it'll be fantastic.
[instrumental music]
This is where I went to school
when I was little.
- Yeah.
- It's pretty cute, eh?
It's really cute.
(Arthur)
It's really nice to see
a side of Matilda
that's a lot more relaxed
like in her own comfort zone.
She's calling the shots
on the day, rather than me.
So, yeah, it's really nice.
This is actually
where I broke my other arm
when I was six.
Yeah. fell off
that thing up there.
- Did you?
- Yeah, I did.
You just walked up that
and fell off?
[laughs]
Yeah.
Think I was trying
to maybe climb down that.
And then just took
a bit of a tumble
and I broke my right arm.
(Matilda)
I like Arthur a lot.
I definitely feel
a lot of chemistry.
We've got quite a spark
between us, I think.
I was just a really
uncoordinated child.
- Really?
- Yeah.
I was, like bad at sports.
Couldn't even ride
a two-wheeler, couldn't swim.
I really want to be
one of the last three
because I think Art's amazing
and I think we'd be
perfect together.
So I hope that he sees
the same thing that I do.
- Should we play hopscotch?
- Yeah.
[laughs]
I could definitely see him
being my future husband
if that were
to work out that way.
(Arthur)
'How do you think today went?'
I feel like it went really well.
Yeah, it was really
nice to see you and dad
getting along so well.
- Yeah.
- And he really likes you.
[laughs]
Are you surprised?
[laughs]
No.
That sounded really surprised.
But just, I don't know,
I was expecting him
to sort of like make you
work a bit harder for it.
But he sort of just seemed
to instantly warm to you.
(Matilda)
The day has been just amazing.
It couldn't have gone better
and it was my ideal setting.
And I'm just on cloud nine
that it's gone so well
and everyone loves him.
I feel like I know you
a bit better, as well.
Yeah, I hope so 'cause..
Um, it was good to show you
where I came from.
Yeah, exactly.
(Arthur) I definitely
feel closer to Matilda
and I feel like I do know her
a lot better.
Probably won't see
you for a while now.
No, not for a few days.
(Matilda) I feel like Arthur
and I are really close
and getting closer
every time I see him.
Alright.
Alright.
(Matilda) I feel like I've
been completely myself with Art
and shown him my family
and my friends.
It's still really early days
but I can see myself
falling in love with Arthur.
(male narrator) Tomorrow
night, on "The Bachelor.."
- Come here!
- Hi.
(male narrator)
...the final two home visits
take Arthur
from Central Auckland..
Mommy.
(male narrator)
...to the deep south.
(Alicia) I do come
from humble beginnings
and I would like him to see that
and see where I come from.
(male narrator)
But previous partners..
Do you think she's ready
for another relationship?
(male narrator)
...and protective parents..
What does your mom think
about this whole process?
I'm not gonna lie.
She didn't want me to do it.
(male narrator) ...threaten
to cut romance short.
(Poppy)
If they don't get on
definitely red flags
will be raised.
And maybe he's not
the right one for me.
(male narrator) Then,
an emotional Rose Ceremony..
(Alicia) We know that it's
getting down to the wire now
and very soon he is going
to choose that one girl.
(male narrator)
...that leaves Arthur
with his toughest decision yet.
Can I have a moment
with you outside?
[instrumental music]
