Spring Tide (2016–…): Season 1, Episode 2 - Episode #1.2 - full transcript

Olivia is totally engrossed in the Beach Case, but doesn't have any luck finding Tom Stilton. She goes to Nordkoster island, instead, to visit the scene of the murder. When she comes to the beach at Hasslevikarna bay, a man appears with a rolling suitcase. Who is he and why does he behave so strangely on the deserted beach? Stilton finds out through Situation Stockholm that Olivia is looking for him, but he is completely uninterested in being in contact. He has other problems. His friend has survived the assault, but Stilton and the rest of Stockholm's homeless live under the constant threat of becoming the next victim. Meanwhile, the police investigation of the attacks is dragging, partly due to the fact that the lead investigator, Rune Forss, an old enemy of Stilton's, is not very engaged.

This murder was committed
in late summer, 1990.

A pregnant young woman
was buried on this beach

and left there
to be drowned by the tide.

I want you to look into it
as a cold-case exercise.

It's a calculated and brutal murder,
committed...

Did you know my dad worked on
the beach case?

No.

- I'd like to talk to Tom Stilton.
- Why?

Because I have a few questions
on one of his cases.

Stilton has left the force.

A group is systematically
assaulting homeless people

and posting videos of the assaults.

- Where does this lead?
- I haven't a clue.

Olivia, it's only an exercise.

A sadistic killer is at large
and no one's lifting a finger.

SPRING TIDE

- Hello. Where you in bed?
- No.

- We were going to Tynningö.
- What?

To paint the house.
Don't tell me you forgot!

No, I didn't forget, but...
I can't go today.

- What do you mean, can't?
- I have to go to the west coast.

- Really? Just like that?
- I'm sorry.

What will you do on the west coast?

I'm going to visit a crime scene
on Nordkoster.

- That murder on the beach again?
- Yes.

What?
- Nothing.

I just think it's strange
you have to work with that case.

- Why? It was a terrible crime.
- I know, it was terrible.

And it's terribly long ago.

And this smells terrible.

Listen, Mum...

Tom Stilton.
- Yes, what about him?

- Do you know him?
- Yes, he worked with your dad.

You met him when you were little.

- Did you see each other socially?
- Occasionally, at one time.

- Why do you ask?
- He's no longer with the force.

- He seems to have disappeared.
- Something happened with him.

I think it was something bad.

Did he start drinking?

I think Arne mentioned that
he spent time in psychiatric care.

I've got to go.
I don't want to miss the ferry.

But how can somebody
just disappear?

Maybe he went off the grid.

- What do you mean, grid?
- The grid of society.

People can drop out of sight,
you know. Bye.

- Bye.
- Keep in touch.

Hello.

Hi, can I help you?

I'm not sure.

I'm looking for a man, Tom Stilton.
Have you come across him?

- Yes, he sells our magazine.
- Great!

- Do you know where I can find him?
- No, he's homeless.

- Can't he be reached in some way?
- No.

- Okay, does he come here regularly?
- He comes to pick up magazines.

Could you ask him to call me
when he comes in?

My name is Olivia Rönning.

Have you ever met Jelle?

Jelle? Is that what he goes by?

Yeah. He's different.

- What do you mean?
- Just different.

Vagrants!

Why do we end up with the crap cases?

- The attacks were vicious.
- Of course.

- The next one might be fatal.
- At least then we'd have a murder case.

- Where is the latest victim, Benseman?
- In South.

Why don't you clean up over there?

How long have you been homeless?

Four years?

Prior to that,
I understand you were a librarian.

We watched a video
of that incident in the park.

It looks like two people
attacked you. Is that correct?

Two young men.

Do you think you'd recognize them?

Was anyone else in the park?

Was there?

Who?

Other homeless people?

- Was that productive?
- Not really.

- So what do we do next?
- What do you think?

We ought to contact the others
who were there.

Why bother? Addicts and drunks
are useless as witnesses.

We both no that.

If we're spending more time on this,
we should put it into something else.

Like on bowling?

Hi, Jelle!
Nasty cough, are you sick?

- Sleeping in that rotten lean-to again?
- No, in the Grand Hotel.

The Grand Hotel?

It's a joke, Pärt.
Jelle hates personal questions.

- Why?
- You tell me.

He's from the islands.
Maybe that's their way.

I heard his dad was a seal hunter.

That wouldn't surprise me.
He stinks like rotten herring.

You can only afford four.

100 kronor left over.
What can you do with that?

Buy fish cakes.

Listen, a girl was here.
She'd like to get in touch with you.

Linn Magnusson speaking. Hello?

Are you going there
because of what your dad wrote?

- Partly.
- What's the other part?

I'm obsessed, remember?

Where is Nordkoster, anyway?

It's a west-coast island off Strömstad.

Have you thought that the killer
might still be there?

- Are you worried?
- About you all the time.

- I'm not going to interrogate anyone.
- Just be careful, all right?

Or poor Elvis will have to spend
all nine lives alone with me.

The cat food is in the cupboard
over the fridge...

and keep the windows closed,
he likes walking on the sills.

I know. This isn't my first time.
We're this close, Elvis and me.

- Hey, you can't take that!
- Why not?

- It's hideous. Look at it!
- You gave it to me.

Well, you've ruined it.
Look at the fuzz-balls here!

- Will this one do?
- Yes, that's okay.

- By the way, Jakob says hi.
- So you saw him again?

He came to Coctail to see me.

- Is it okay if he stays over?
- If you change the sheets this time!

...one of the controversial
violent videos...

They're talking about those attacks
on the homeless.

Our expert is social psychologist
and well-known debater Eva Carlsén.

- Welcome.
- Thank you.

The internet clips are shocking.
What kind of people would do that?

- We would.
- Shut up.

We don't know who was behind
these specific attacks.

But it boils down to children
who have been abused,

who have grown up without love...

Children?
...over time feel violated, worthless.

So they attack people they consider...

- She's full of shit.
- Shut up.

...in this case, the homeless.

Can it be stopped?

That's a political issue. It's about
where a society places its resources.

I can only describe what happens,
why it happens and the consequences.

- Such as these disturbing videos.
- Yes, among other things.

Thank you, Eva. More on this story...

Found her?

Yes.

- Are you Olivia?
- Yes. - Hi. I'm Betty Nordeman. Welcome.

- Thanks.
- Is this your luggage?

Was the sea rough?
The smaller boats are like that.

I bought some land up north
and set up some cottages.

- When was that?
- In the summer of 1990.

The year that woman was murdered
here in Hasslevikarna.

Are you of those "crime tourists"?

No, we're studying the case
at the Police College...

so I thought I'd come and see the place.

So you're going to be a policewoman?

That's the plan,
but for now I'm just a student.

Each to her own.

That beach murder is something
we'll never forget. It was terrible.

It hung over us like a cloud for years.

Were you here when it happened?

- Yes, where else?
- Maybe that was a silly question.

The island was invaded.
Police and helicopters everywhere.

They questioned everyone on the island.
I told them what I suspected.

What was that?

Racists, satanists, terrorists...
Had to be one of those "ists".

Cyclists?

Right. Stockholm humor.

A beer, please.

Here are my cottages.

Do you remember who was staying
at the time of the murder?

Over there, two drug addicts,
unfortunately.

I kicked them out.

- What were their names?
- I don't know.

Then there was that slut
from Stockholm in No. 10.

She made those poor lobster-fishing boys
on the jetty dizzy.

- Then the police interviewed her.
- Was she a suspect?

I don't know. They questioned her here,

then she had to go to Strömstad
with Gunnar.

- Gunnar...?
- Wernemyr. From the police.

He's retired now.

- Does he live on the island?
- Yes, in the village.

Do you remember her name,
the slut?

Of course. It was the same
as Kennedy's wife.

Okay, and what's that?

You don't know the name
of Kennedy's wife?

No.

Jackie.

- Jackie what?
- Kennedy.

- No, I mean the slut.
- I have no idea.

This is your cottage.

The key's inside.

The little boy who saw
the murder on the beach...

That was the Gardman boy, Ove.
They lived in those woods.

He's not here now?
- No, he travels the world. He's a...

What's it called? Marine biologist.

Oh, black nail polish!

What a find! Look! Look!

I called the hospital.

I told them
I was Benseman's sister.

- They put me through to the head nurse.
- What did she say?

That he's "responding well to treatment".

I asked:
"What does it mean in Swedish"?

"He's feeling a bit better".
That's good, no?

Benseman's a good man.

What?
- I don't think...

I've heard you say anything
personal about anybody, ever.

He doesn't talk so bloody much.

What the hell?
Stilton, how are you?

Toothache.

Pull them. See you!

- Do you have toothache?
- Nop.

Who was that man?
- Minken.

I'm taking off.

- Where are you going?
- To the opera.

Listen, Jelle...

Would you walk me home?

Why?

It's creepy going through the woods,
with the attacks and all that.

So will you?

Thanks for keeping me company.

Come in.

Come in, the weather's rotten.

I'm being evicted on Monday.

Where am I supposed to go?

- Can't you move it?
- How?

Both tires are blown. And the caravan'd
probably fall apart if you towed it.

How big is the place you kip in?

My lean-to?

Well, it's...

Planning on moving in?

Scared you, didn't I?

You must do something about that
before it gets to your lungs.

Don't you care about your health?
Do you still have those episodes?

Have you eaten?

Hello? Earth calling...

Have you had anything to eat?

- Yes. Crispbread. Want some?
- Thanks.

Oh, I have a present for you.

I found it yesterday, look.

It works with a prepaid card.

I know you don't like phones.

But now our friends
are getting beaten up...

could you use it, please?

Please?

Want a drink?

Shit...

You're welcome to kip here tonight.

On the bench seat.

Know what Pärt says?

He says you're a seal hunter's son?
Is that true?

No.

Grandpa was a seal hunter.

And your dad?

Jelle?

Sorry, I didn't mean to startle you.

I saw the lights on and I need help.
May I use your phone?

My battery's dead and I need to call
a taxi boat. It's just a brief call.

- Sure.
- Thanks. It will only take a minute.

Hello, I need a ride into Strömstad,
I'm on Nordkoster.

Yes. The west-side landing.
Dan Nilsson.

Great. Thank you.

Thank you very much.

I saw you over at Hasslevikarna
earlier today.

Really?
What were you doing there?

I was on a walk and got lost.
Why were you there?

I need to go,
my taxi's on its way.

Okay. Bye.

So you'd like to know more
about Jackie Berglund.

Berglund? Is that her surname?
- Yes.

- Why did you interview her?
- She was an...

escort.

Go ahead and say it.
She was a luxury whore.

Yes, that's another word for it.

She was a guest on a yacht
with two Norwegian men...

On the night of the murder,
they were moored at the marina.

At the same time,
a witness claimed she had seen

Berglund walking alone on the path

leading to the beach at Hasslevikarna.

She denied it,
but the matter was never fully settled.

- Why not?
- The CID took over.

- They focused on other aspects.
- Like the earring, perhaps?

Is that familiar?
- No...

There was a coat on the beach.
Who did it belong to?

You'd have to ask
the chief investigator.

Tom Stilton.

Yes, he knows more than anyone.

What did you buy?

What will you do with those?
Do you have a kitchen?

No.

You eat cold fish cakes?

Jelle...

Come on.

Come on!

When did you leave this morning?

Okay. Did you feed him?

Sure, let's talk more tomorrow.

It needs to simmer a bit longer.

- Would you like some wine?
- I'd love some.

- How did the painting go?
- Fine, thank you.

What are we having?

- Garlic chicken special.
- What makes it special?

The ingredients not in the recipe.

What's this book?
- Some old book of your dad's.

Cheers.

Eva Carlsén...
I saw her on TV the other day.

She wrote that years ago.
Escort services or something.

Strange, I met an old cop
on Nordkoster...

and one of the people he interviewed
was an escort.

Maybe the victim was one too.

Maybe.
But they must have explored that.

Yes. Although he felt
they had let her go to soon.

Jackie Berglund is her name.
Maybe Eva knows her.

- Maybe that's why Dad bought her book.
- What are you driving at?

- Maybe I can talk to her.
- About what?

About Jackie Berglund. Where she lives,
what she does now...

- What would you do if you knew?
- Go and see her.

I don't believe this!
What are you thinking of?

What I'm thinking of? I'm thinking of
doing well in my assignment.

Oh, no, you're not.
You think you can solve the case.

No, I don't.

Your father wouldn't have liked this,
just so you know.

That's cruel.
Don't drag him into this.

Isn't it why you're doing this,
to prove something?

Prove something? To whom?

To Dad?
Well, he's dead, Mum.

You weren't here when he died.
Are you trying to make up for that?

Olivia.

- Thanks for dinner.
- Olivia, don't go!

Beach?

Hot fish cakes.

Where did you get all those scars?

I was a handful as a kid.

Did they beat you?

- For being a handful?
- Let's not talk about it.

My dad beat me with a bunch of keys.
He was a drunk, and so was my mum.

When I was a pest,
he whacked me with his keys.

That's what scarred me.

The keys?
- No...

That he did it. But what happened
with Gran, that's what crippled me.

I was 13 and we went to stay with her
on her farm. My parents and me.

They drank and fought.
Gran went out.

She knew those keys would swing again,
that they'd take it out on me.

By the time they whipped out the keys,
I could run away. They were too wasted.

And I was quick on my feet.

I found Gran,
I found her in the barn...

swinging by a rope from a beam.

I tried to get Mum and Dad,
but they were too drunk.

So I went back and cut her down.

I put her on the floor and sat with her
for hours, in the dark, crying.

I loved Gran.

That's what crippled me.

So, what was your childhood like?

What's this?

A seal harpoon.

- Did they beat you with one?
- No, they never beat me.

You're good at drawing.

I'm going to put it up. I can look
at it when I wake up and feel happy...

thinking about that. That you
weren't beaten with a seal harpoon...

Vera...

You don't beat kids
just because they're a handful.

Will you stay?

There's not much room.

Bloody disgusting!

We don't know a thing,
unless we want to.

Why are you upset?

- An innocent person was murdered.
- That's your opinion.

- And what's yours?
- I solved a problem.

Jelle?
