Spring Tide (2016–…): Season 1, Episode 1 - Episode #1.1 - full transcript

1990. Under the glow of a full moon, a sadistic murder is committed on Nordkoster island - a young pregnant woman is buried in the sand, so that she slowly drowns as the tide rises. 25 years later, the case remains unsolved. Olivia Rönning is assigned the case to work on, as cold-case training at the Police Academy. Olivia becomes obsessed with the murder when she discovers that her father, who died several years ago, worked on the original investigation. She soon realises that she has to find the lead investigator, detective Tom Stilton. There's only one problem - he has disappeared off the face of the earth. Tom Stilton is homeless now and does not want to be reminded of his old life or an old, unsolved case - he has a hard enough time just surviving. Horrifying videos start showing up online, in which homeless people are brutally assaulted, and one of Stilton's friends is attacked.

Hail Mary, full of grace,
the Lord is with thee.

Blessed art thou among women, and
blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with
thee. Blessed art thou among women...

Take me!

SPRING TIDE

This brutal murder was committed
on a night in the late summer of 1990.

There are many unsolved cases...

but only one where the victim's identity
remains unknown after 25 years.

- How far gone was she?
- She was heavily pregnant.

- How long was she buried?
- Long enough to be drowned by the tide.

It's an unusually gruesome murder.

This is about being drowned by the tide.

Is the difference
between high and low tide big?

Yes, but only in one place.
At Hasslevikarna on Nordkoster.

And only at one point in time.

When the sun and moon
align exactly with earth.

It's called the spring tide.

I'm giving you this case over the summer
as a cold-case exercise.

What could have been achieved
with modern police techniques?

DNA, profiling, etc, etc.

Pick up a case file each
on your way out. Thank you.

Gruesome murder on Nordkoster

Police reticent: No new clues
the woman had Rohypnol in her body.

Police remain unable
to identify the woman...

killed on Nordkoster last Friday...

nor have they any leads
on the perpetrator.

One of the investigators,
Arne Rönning, spoke to us.

It's a calculated and brutal murder,
committed...

Dad?

Dad?

I can't sleep.

Hi, sweetie. Come here.

- Can't you sleep either?
- No, I can't.

- What are you doing?
- I don't know. Thinking...

- About her?
- Yes.

Who is she?

I'm afraid I don't know.

Olivia! Hello, darling.
What are you doing?

Looking for something.

For what?
That's just Dad's old papers.

We're studying a case of his.
I want to see if he'd kept something.

Why?

- I saw him in a news clip today.
- Dad?

Yes, in the library. It was an old clip,
but he looked good.

What was it about?

The case, this really sick murder
of a young woman.

Worst I've ever heard of.
On Nordkoster.

- The beach case?
- Yes.

Why dig into that?

It's just an exercise,
but it's really exciting.

Think I could find anything
about it here?

Please leave things tidy.

Washing Dad's car
may be a better idea.

Chief Inspector Tom Stilton, CID,
head of the investigation.

- How many jumped you?
- Two.

- Think it was the same guys?
- As last night? No idea.

Hi. How many?

Hello.
- Jelle! Comb your hair with a grenade?

Fucking rough sleeper!

A HOLY MESS OF TREASURES

...Assault on a homeless person...

- Here's the new issue...brutally beaten...
- Thanks a lot.

She is being treated at Södersjukhuset...

and is in a stable condition...
- Here.

...are no life-threatening.
The police have no leads...

- Hello, Olivia!
- Pardon...

Did you know my dad worked
on the beach case?

- No.
- No?

I found a box at Mum's crammed
with papers from the investigation.

- That he kept at home?
- Yes. What?

Nothing.

He'd noted some questions
that looked interesting.

I wonder if I could access
the actual murder investigation.

Where can I find it?

Central Archives in Gothenburg,
I'd imagine, but you can't see it.

- Why not?
- The case is still active.

- Outsiders can't access that material.
- What do I do? Who can I talk to?

- No idea, Olivia.
- CID Cold Case Unit, perhaps?

- Who heads that team?
- Verner Brost.

- Now I know. Thanks.
- Olivia...

- Yes.
- It's only an exercise.

1. Coat? 2. DNA? 3. The boy? 4. Earring?
5. What have we missed on Nordkoster?

I asked him
if he'd swallowed an antelope!

Well, he looks like a crocodile!

You need good insulation!

I'll call you back.

- What the hell do you want?
- Hello.

Hello.

I'm Sven Bomark
from the local council.

Unfortunately,
this caravan has to be moved.

"Moved"?

We need access to this land.

- What for?
- A jogging track.

But I can't move it.
I live here.

Maybe we can help with the move.
I'll look into it.

It has to be gone by the end
of the month because...

Dropouts don't need to conform,
conformists need to drop out!

Situation Stockholm!
Hello, Miss.

- Anything by you today?
- Yes, in my own words. - Thanks.

Situation Stockholm!

- Hi, Benseman! How is it?
- Hi! Not bad.

- How many have you sold?
- Well, 22 copies.

Wow! So that's enough for today, eh?

Vera... Don't try it on.

My place.

Yeah, I know. But I need the dough.

- I feel rotten. What a shitty day!
- Isn't it always?

Sure, but I just need an hour,
then you can have it back.

Please, please, please,
Bense-bamse-bumseman.

Thanks! Want a hug?

- Good luck.
- Thanks!

Buy Sweden's hottest magazine,
Situation Stockholm.

You don't want to miss this!

- I've no money!
- What? Me neither.

- Hello, darling!
- Hi!

- Hi. Are you going like that?
- What?

Forgot we're going out tonight?

- Absolutely not.
- You did.

Well, maybe.
But you have to see this.

What is it?

An unsolved murder.
Want to hear about it?

- No, not if it's gory.
- It's not. - Yeah.

A pregnant young woman,
buried on a beach, drowned by the tide.

The investigators have nothing,
no motive, no murder, not even a name!

Get it? And this, "coat". Whose coat?
"Earring". Whose?

Maybe some unknown sect
wanted to sacrifice...

the fetus to some moon good...

And when they cut out the fetus...

they find little worms inside it
transmitting signals to Jupiter...

- Then a UFO comes...
- Lennie, shall we go? - Yes.

- Is Jakob coming?
- I hope so.

Why should I move my caravan?
It's my home!

They are a bunch of fucking idiots!

It's not about the bloody jogging track.

It's about the people
walking their furry rats.

They think I lower the tone
in their flashy area.

I don't fit into their tidy reality.
They don't give a shit about us!

- Vera, it could be... I'm just saying...
- No! No!

Jelle, are you coming?

Come on, Jelle!

Vera, Vera...

She's like a snow plough,
she ploughs on and doesn't listen.

She's right, though.
If you don't fit in, they want you gone.

It's true. We're at their mercy.

Homeless equals outcast.

"Done is the day, darkness will prey
On stars and cats and whores."

"Filled up with tarts, riff-raff and farts,
The jailhouses sleep and ignore."

It's still like that today.

Let's do it.

Weren't you going to quit that stuff?

- I know. I will...
- When? - Well... I will!

- Hey!
- Fuck! Shit!

- Why are you waiting? Do it!
- No, no, no!

Shit!

I'm calling the cops!

What the...

Come on!

Oh, shit!

Benseman?

Oh, shit! Benseman?

There, there...

Try to breathe.

Good, that's it.

There, there...

A gang is systematically assaulting
homeless people...

and posting videos
of the assaults online.

These images from the 4th film,
posted on the website "Trashkick"...

show an assault in central Stockholm...

- How is he?
- I don't know.

He's got serious internal injuries.
His spleen is knackered.

- The doctors worked on him all night.
- Will he live?

- What do I know? They think so.
- Look what I got. Tear-gas spray!

Dumb.

Why did we leave the park?

If we'd stayed,
I'd have stopped that shit!

Remember how I beat the shit out...

of those guys
who tried to steal my phone?

Two hammered 12-year-old dwarves!

Yeah, but you'd have helped.
You're not useless.

I feel for you, Pärt.

But Benseman is tough.
He'll make it, I promise you that.

- Verner Brost?
- Yes.

Hi! Olivia Rönning.

- I am at the Police College.
- I see.

Are you working on
the Nordkoster beach case?

No.

- Why not?
- We reached an impasse.

What does that mean, "impasse"?

There's no new forensic evidence,
no new witness statements...

Nothing was overlooked in the original
investigation as far as we know.

No?

- Whose was the coat found on the beach?
- I can't say.

Can't or won't?

- I don't know all the details of the case.
- Okay.

Do you think a religious sect
could be involved?

- No.
- No, neither do I.

Tom Stilton was in charge.
Where can I find him?

- He's left the force.
- He was? Is he still in Stockholm?

I don't know. Ask Mette Olsäter.

- Who's she?
- You don't know who Olsäter is?

- No. Should I?
- Yes.

Excuse me, do you where I can find
Mette Olsäter?

She's CID, in there.

- Do you have an appointment?
- No. Do I need one?

No, I'm sure you'll be fine.

Thanks!

Yes!

- Mette Olsäter?
- Yes, what do you want?

- May I come in?
- What for?

Olivia Rönning
from the Police College...

Rönning?
- Yes.

- Arne's daughter?
- Yep.

- Come in.
- Thanks.

- So how's the Police College these days?
- Fine.

- What are you after?
- I'm looking for Tom Stilton.

Why?

I'm doing a project on a case he ran
and have a few questions.

- Stilton has left the force.
- So I heard.

I thought I could ask him
a few questions, even so.

Do you know where he is?

- No.
- No idea?

- No, sorry.
- Okay. Thanks anyway!

You've got something on your chin.

Hi! How are you doing?
This is Benseman's spot.

- Yes, but he won't be here for a while.
- No.

- Here...
- Thanks!

- You need that.
- So do you. - I'll be fine. Take care.

NILS FERLIN
SONGS FOR A DANSE MACABRE

So I'm officially in love with Jakob,
I think...

It wasn't easy at first.
Seems he's afraid of germs.

I had a cold
and he couldn't handle that.

He saw some gunk in my eye
and it all got a bit emotional.

I had to nag him...

You're not listening.

- Of course I am.
- You're not.

- What color was his bedroom?
- White? I don't know.

"White"?
I didn't even say what color it was.

But listen to this...
she was drugged, the woman on the beach.

What's so special about this case?

My dad was part of the investigation.

- No wonder you're obsessed with it.
- I'm not obsessed.

Yes, you're obsessed. Aren't you?

- It's quite cool, you know.
- What?

He was puzzling over it.
And now you are.

You're thinking the same thoughts.
You inhabit the same world of thoughts.

- Didn't you think of that?
- No, not like that.

A bit cool?

- Yes, it's cool.
- It is.

So did you get laid?

You're joking.
No time to shower this morning!

- You're gross!
- I have to tell you...

That's why I don't listen.

I'll film you.

- How many hits?
- Shed loads. Most ever.

Adam, Barbie is broken!

She's not broken. Bring me the head
and I'll put it back on, okay... What?

I love that line: "Bring me the head,
and I'll put it back on."

You're really weird sometimes.

Come here, Elvis. Time for dinner.

Here you go. Mmm...

No? Not good enough?

You're so picky.

No result found for "Tom Stilton".

I hope this gives you an idea...

of what the National Forensic
Center does...

and why some colleagues call us
"the garage of Death".

DNA analysis takes time,
and so it should.

It could send someone to jail.

Any questions?

How advanced was DNA technology
in Sweden in 1990? Was it used?

We first used it in 1991.

Before then we had sometimes send
samples to the UK, mostly in rape cases.

We thank Marianne Borglund,
for this interesting lecture.

And now I'd like to wish you all
a nice summer.

See you in the autumn!

- Lunch?
- No, I have to get back to Linköping.

Excuse me.
Weren't you married to Tom Stilton?

Yes. Why?

I'm looking for him.
He ran the case we discussed today.

Do you know where he is?

No we're not in touch.

- No? Is he in town?
- No idea.

- Did you get hold of Verner Brost?
- Yes. The beach case hit an "impasse".

- It's crazy.
- Why? - Because no one cares.

A sadistic murderer is walking free
and no one is lifting a finger.

Give me the kite.

- Antonio!
- I told you you would lose.

He's sleeping. Run!

What do you want me do do with it?

If I'm not back by the 1st of July...

give it to Lluviso.

- What do you want him to do?
- He'll know.

Has something happened?

Yes.

Want to talk about it?

- Know why I like you, Dan?
- No.

Because you never take anything
for granted.

Neither do you.

Thanks for the rum.

Dan, my friend...

For luck my friend.

Thank you.

I wish I'd stayed in the park.

I went back yesterday. I found this.
It belongs to you, I think.

Bense-bamse...

- Why are you here?
- What's it look like?

You can't be here now.
Visiting hours are over.

I'm here all the same.

I've got to go. See you soon.

Hang in there.
Everything will be fine.

She's over here.
I don't know how she got in.

Stop. Stop!

Let me go, arsehole!

I'll report you to the
European Court of Human Rights!

Thanks a lot, you bastard!
Thank you so much. Fuck you!

What's up?

Isse has found a new space in Arsta.
We're starting the cages again.

- But listen, we can't...
- Shh!

- Where does this lead?
- No idea.

5. What have we missed on Nordkoster?
