A security guard hears ghostly whispers while investigating a break-in at an old hospital building. A firefighter unknowingly summons an evil entity while playing around with a spirit board.

I couldn't even wrap my mind
around it.

Hundreds of fatalities,
thousands of crashes...

[ glass shatters ]

...For no reason whatsoever.

It was a black shadow.

It did not want me there.

I saw it continuing to move
forward towards me.

I was [bleep] terrified.

I feel...A presence.

It's just my imagination.



And there was a boy
just standing in the door

Looking at me.

You could see it plain as day.

I thought it was pretty creepy.

Scares me to death.

You don't want to go around
telling people

That you saw a ghost.

♪♪

Boy: Hello.

[ siren wailing, engine revs ]

Woman: Oh, my god!
Man: 911.

Please state your emergency.
Woman: I think it's a ghost!

[ creature snarls ]

♪♪



[ gunshot ]

[ screams ]

♪♪

♪♪

♪♪

[ ringing ]

[ indistinct radio chatter ]

Dispatcher:
Units on scene. Backup and fire
are on their way.

Copy that.

[ siren wails ]

Responding to
the remote 911 call

Is police officer john hulton.

That evening I was working
on the outskirts of the city.

We received a 911 call for a car
that struck a tree.

Narrator:
Faced with poor road conditions,

The officer approaches
the crash site with due caution.

Our rule when we show up
to something like that,

Especially for the first
on scene, is safety,

And keep in mind
it was pretty slick that night.

Dispatcher:
Ems reports two victims --
driver and passenger.

Narrator: The officer joins
the ems crew already on site.

His job now is
to secure the area.

As the police, when you're
on scene, that's your scene.

You're in charge
of what's going on there.

You sort of take a wide look at
what's going on and sort of say,

"is it safe
to approach this vehicle?

Is there a fire happening?
Is there wires down?"

Narrator: He learns
the driver has survived

And is being transported
to hospital.

♪♪

But the passenger,
pronounced dead on the scene,

Is still in the car.

Hulton:
I'm getting close to the car,

Trying to figure out
what's going on.

♪♪

♪♪

Boy:
Mommy! Help me!

Hulton:
I could see in the back seat
of the vehicle a very young boy,

And I'd put him around
7 years old, around that time

'cause I had kids that age.

♪♪

Narrator: Officer hulton is
suddenly overcome

By a series of stark images
and an uneasy feeling.

♪♪

I think this situation
hit closer to home.

I can't even explain the
feelings that go through you.

I have an 8-year-old at home.

Narrator:
Arriving home, he tries to put
the disturbing experience

Out of his mind as he prepares
himself for a few days off.

[ footsteps approaching ]

Hulton:
When I'm home, I hear footsteps.

I feel something.

I feel like
I'm not there alone.

Boy: Mommy!

♪♪

I'm just thinking that
"it's just my imagination."

♪♪

Narrator:
Following the incident, my wife
went away up to her parents

For a christmas visit,
and so left the dog and I alone.

♪♪

Narrator: With his wife and son
away for the night,

Officer hulton tries to catch up
on some much-needed sleep.

[ growls ]

So, somewhere close
to 4:00 in the morning...

♪♪

[ dog barking ]

♪♪

...The dog was acting up.

The dog was barking down
the hall,

And that's what woke me up.

♪♪

And I got out of bed...

[ barking continues ]

♪♪

...And I walked down the hall.

♪♪

[ barking continues ]

I know the house is locked.

[ barking continues ]

♪♪

I have an alarm system,
so nobody's in the house

That's got in the house
that shouldn't be there.

♪♪

[ barking continues ]

Narrator:
But someone is most definitely
up on the second floor...

♪♪

...Where he is confronted

By some type of unexplained
electrical glitch.

♪♪

[ switch clicking ]

♪♪

I figured it was just one
of those situations

Where my psyche
is playing games with me.

[ screaming in distance ]

As I looked down the hallway,

I can see him.

♪♪

It was the boy that I saw
from the accident.

As I head down the hallway...

...He's not there anymore.

♪♪

Scares me to death.

Narrator: Days before christmas,
police officer john hulton

Responds
to a horrific car crash --

The result of the tragic death
of a young boy...

♪♪

...Who later appears to him
at his house.

[ screaming in distance ]

♪♪

My emotions are high right now,

And part of me thinks
that it's psychological.

So there's a little skepticism
in my brain.

It's hard to talk to one
of your police officers.

You don't want to go around
telling people

That you saw a ghost
'cause they will judge you.

♪♪

Narrator:
Puzzled by what he's seen,

The officer searches
the rest of the house...

♪♪

...And finds no further trace
of the boy.

Unable to go back to sleep,

He heads to the kitchen to get
an early start on the day...

- Morning.
- Morning.

...Where he finds his friend

And overnight guest,
perry bloom,

Also unable to sleep.

Bloom: Me and a friend of mine
were helping

John do trim
in his kitchen that weekend,

So it was kind of
an all-day event,

And just went late
into the night.

Can't sleep?
No.

Gotta tell you
something, man.

Just saw
the weirdest thing.

Woke me up.
Can't sleep.

What?
What'd you see?

♪♪

I was sleeping
in the living room

And I woke up
out of a dead sleep.

I almost feel, like, a deep pit
in your stomach kind of anxiety.

Kind of just had the feeling
something was looking at me.

♪♪

And there was a boy
just standing in the door

Looking at me.

It was definitely around
a 7 year old,

Blond hair, white shirt on.

You could see it plain as day.

♪♪

♪♪

By the time my mind
could figure out

What it was looking at,
it was gone.

He was all pale and shirt
was glowing and...

Harry had no idea that
I had seen this in the house.

He described the boy that I saw
from the accident to a t.

It changed everything
'cause he gave it credence.

He put the link there.

I started putting
the puzzle together.

Am I the last person he saw?

First person he saw
after the accident?

After he went to after life?
I don't know.

I have no idea
how he attached to me.

With someone who has just died,
there's usually a great

Emotional turbulence
and a state of confusion,

And there standing
in front of you

Is a police officer
who we've all been taught

From a very early age
that we can trust,

That we are safe with.

♪♪

So it's entirely reasonable
that the spirit

Would choose to associate itself
with that police officer

And perhaps follow them home.

Where else do you go?

Narrator: But with his family
set to return,

The officer's main goal
is to make the house safe

By figuring out
what the dead boy wants.

So, I was like --
I yelled out, and I'm like,

"what are you doing here?"
hey, I know you're here.

What do you want?

Narrator:
In this case, the officer felt
actual tangible energy transfer

When the victim died.

You could easily bring
in something

That's dark,
negative, and evil.

Narrator: Has the officer
unknowingly brought something

Dangerous into his house?

It scares me to death thinking

That something's gonna happen
to me or my family members.

Boy: Help me!

That's the fear I feel.

Narrator: Does the dead boy
intend to harm his family?

♪♪

The dog started
growling really bad.

[ dog growling ]

♪♪

♪♪

The boy was gonna go
in my son's room.

♪♪

And it's a great fear
because you're afraid to --

What would happen or, you know,
what could happen?

Not all attachments
are negative,

But all of them
seem to be very frightening

To those
that experience them.

Hulton:
As I head down the hallway,

The door's still shut
to my son's room.

The fear for me was that
I was going to see something

I didn't want to see.

And there's nobody else
in the room.

And all of a sudden I go,
"oh, my god,

I'm having
mental-health issues

'cause I'm not really
seeing a ghost.

This is something that's
gone wrong in my brain."

That's what you think.

It was just my mind
playing tricks on me.

♪♪

Narrator:
He decides to go back to bed
and clear his troubled mind.

♪♪

[ sighs ]

♪♪

Boy: Mommy!

Narrator: But someone or
something won't let him sleep.

♪♪

I look down from my bed,
I see him again.

♪♪

What do you want?

♪♪

[ exhales sharply ]

Narrator:
When police officer john hulton

Responds to a fatal car crash...

♪♪

...He's confronted
by the ghost of the dead boy

Stalking him through his house.

He dismisses the sightings
as hallucinations brought on

By the stress of the accident

Until his friend and overnight
guest sees the same dead boy.

♪♪

And with the ghost disappearing
into his son's room,

He's reminded
of what is now at stake --

The very safety of his family.

I'm thinking,
"why did he end up at my house?"

♪♪

And then I go,
"what's gonna happen?"

It scares me to death
thinking something's

Gonna happen to me
or my family members.

I don't know,
but that's the fear I feel.

♪♪

Narrator: He still doesn't know
what the dead boy wants

Or what he's capable of.

♪♪

A few days later, his neighbor
brian turns up at his door.

There's something
I have to tell you.

Brian says to me,
"I have to tell you a story."

And I said,
"what's going on, brian?"

He goes, "you remember
roughly a few days ago?"

Narrator: Brian tells the
officer about letting himself

In through the back door

To drop off a batch of
freshly-baked christmas cookies.

♪♪

There was a little boy --
blond hair, white shirt.

You saw him?

Blond hair
and a white shirt.

♪♪

And then the boy was gone.

♪♪

And he said, "I just got this
really bad feeling through --

Just really bad."

Brian had no idea that
I had seen this in the house.

He is not a believer
in the supernatural.

This is what kept playing
over and over in my mind

Is when brian sees the boy
in front of him,

I think, "is something
bad gonna happen?"

Well, he says the next morning
he's getting ready for work.

He said, "I wasn't feeling
really well."

Narrator: Brian decides
to return to his bedroom

To lay down for a while.

As he's walking up the stairs,

He hears footsteps behind him,

And he stops, looks around,
doesn't see anybody.

♪♪

So he continues up the stairs...

♪♪

...And he hears
three more steps --

Dut, dut, dut --
to the landing.

He says, "I feel like
I'm not there alone."

He said, "john, the hair on
the back of my neck stood up."

Narrator:
Suddenly, brian is gripped

By an intense tightness
in his chest.

♪♪

Stop.

Turn around.

He saw the boy.

No.

Basically, he told me
to go to the hospital.

♪♪

So, he said, "I just thought
I should go to the hospital."

He saved my life.

What?

He was having a heart attack.

He went right from the emergency
room to a quadruple bypass.

I would have just sat there
and read the newspaper.

Who knows what
would have happened.

And he says that he probably
would have just went

Upstairs, sat down,
and read the paper

And he probably
would have died right there.

He said,
"but because of that..."

And whatever reason he thought
he should go to the hospital,

And it saved his life.

He truly believes that this was
like an angel

Sent to him to save him.

This isn't an older person
that's ready to die.

This is a child that has
no real concept of death,

Has no idea what it is.

So when the poor child
found itself in this state,

Out of the body in the middle
of this horrific car crash,

It went straight to the officer.

Those who die with great fear,
with great pain, with confusion,

Those that are
in a state of shock

Often seem to be earth bound.

They don't know how to get to
where they're going next,

And sometimes they need help.

While this is extremely sad,

It's also heartening to see the
child knew who it could trust.

Narrator: Officer hulton returns
to the scene of the crash,

The last place
the boy was alive,

Hoping to release his spirit.

Hulton:
I've never had any experiences
in the paranormal

Before this occurrence.

Knowing what I know now,
maybe he's in limbo somewhere.

He doesn't know where he is.

I want to be able to help him.

Police tend to be
pretty skeptical people.

I would have never thought
it really existed

Until you have
an experience like this.

♪♪

But now that there's true
support to what I saw,

It really makes you think that
there's a lot more out there

Than, you know,
one wants to believe.

Dispatch to car 5,
accident on highway us 17.

Narrator:
Working a patrol nearby,

Police officer joseph warner
responds to the 911 call.

Dispatcher:
Single-vehicle collision.

Victim's unknown.

This was a very busy night
for us.

There were a lot
of motorists on the road.

10-4.
Two minutes away.

-Fire and ems dispatched.
- Copy that.

Narrator: Officer warner is
the first on the scene

With paramedics
not far behind.

♪♪

As I approached the vehicle...

♪♪

...I observed the driver,
who was a white male,

Sitting in the driver seat.

Sir?
Sir?

Sir?

I realized
he was already deceased.

It was one of
my first fatalities

That I actually worked
by myself,

So it was a lot to take in.

♪♪

At that point,
he grabbed my hand.

He was trying to say something.

Help is on the way.

Help is on the way.

I was talking to him, telling
him that it would be okay.

Stay with me.

[ groans ]

His arm went limp.

Something happened,
I'm not sure what.

Something medically happened.

Sir?

Sir?

This does not look good.

And they pronounced him
dead at the scene.

I was pretty emotional
at that point.

♪♪

Narrator: Once the paramedics
removed the body,

It's the officer's job
to safeguard the scene

And document any evidence.

Every time that there's
a traffic fatality,

It's considered a crime scene
until we can determine

That it wasn't a crime.

You want to preserve
any evidence,

Make sure a crime
hasn't occurred.

That would equal looking
for tire marks, any witnesses,

Anything to try to piece it
together immediately

Because all that fresh evidence
eventually goes away.

According to the witnesses,
it was driving straight,

Going the speed limit,

And then just veered to the left
and into the tree.

I was taking photographs
of the vehicle.

I had just passed
the driver's door.

I was in the process of taking
a picture of the tree

That the vehicle hit.

♪♪

Right before I took the photo,
I got really anxious,

I got nauseous,
I felt uncomfortable.

♪♪

I didn't know what was going on.

I've never experienced
anything like that

Before previously
as a police officer.

Narrator: As the officer
continues to study the scene,

He's puzzled
by the eyewitness reports

Stating there was
no oncoming traffic.

So what caused the vehicle
to suddenly drive off the road?

[ camera shutter clicks ]

When you're investigating
a traffic accident,

You need to take photographs
of as many aspects of the scene

To include the vehicle,
the roadway,

Any evidence
including skid marks.

It just didn't make sense to me.

[ indistinct radio chatter ]

Dispatcher:
Car 5, can you read me?

Officer warner.

We have another crash
on us 17, marker 22.

Copy that.

Narrator: Before the officer
can further ponder

The cause of the accident,
he's called to another crash.

I received a 911 call
about another vehicle

That ran off the road.

Narrator:
An area that's very close by.

If you draw a straight line

I would say it's about 15 miles
from the other accident.

Narrator: Once again,
officer warner is the first

To arrive on the scene.

As I was approaching it,
I was trying to get myself back

In the mind-set
as a police officer

'cause I was still
kind of emotional.

Narrator:
The accident scene in eerily
similar to the one he just left.

Mind-set I had was,
"not another one."

The one that I just finished up
with was a pretty bad one.

So to have two in one night
to work on

Is not the most ideal situation
for a police officer.

I approached the vehicle
and I saw the driver.

♪♪

I realized
he was already deceased.

This is officer warner on scene
of the motor-vehicle accident.

One fatality.

Dispatcher: Copy.

♪♪

I just had that anxious feeling.

Narrator:
As paramedics remove the body,

The officer repeats
the same protocol

As for the previous crash.

♪♪

I was getting ready
to take some photographs.

Narrator:
Most striking is the fact
both victims have lost control

Of their vehicle
for no apparent reason,

And then they were killed
by crashing into a tree.

This is way beyond the norm.

I took about 60 photographs
that night of that accident.

You're looking for any evidence
that could show up in a photo

'cause if a crime did occur

It would be pertinent
to show in court.

♪♪

Narrator: After gathering all
the physical evidence he can,

The officer is drawn
to what sounds like someone

In the nearby woods.

Warner: I believe that there is
some type of energy

In that area that was not good.

I just wanted
to get out of there.

♪♪

And I just so happened to look
over for the same area

Where the vehicle hit the tree,
and I saw what I thought

Was a person
on the other side of the trees.

♪♪

Who's there?!

It's coming closer,
getting bigger

And bigger and bigger.

I did feel like
it meant me some harm,

And I also felt
that it did not want me there.

[ creature growling ]

Narrator: While police officer
joseph warner patrols

The back roads of a small town
in the eastern us,

He's called to respond
to two fatal accidents

With eerie similarities.

Both accidents occurred
on the same stretch of highway,

Involved drivers

That were seemingly forced
off the road for no reason,

And both victims died
by crashing into a tree.

Worse still, something menacing
is stalking him from dark woods.

It was a black shadow...

On the other side of the trees.

[ creature growling ]

I could definitely
see a head, shoulders,

Feet, legs, everything.

It started walking towards me,

Getting bigger
and bigger and bigger.

It definitely scare the crap
out of me.

I also felt that it did not
want me there.

I couldn't even wrap my mind
around it --

Where it came from
or what it was.

I try to rationalize it,
and I just assumed

It was just because
of the night and the stress.

Narrator:
He reports to headquarters...

This is officer warner.

...But keeps his strange
experiences to himself.

Warner: I didn't want to
publicize it too much

'cause if it gets around --

It's like high school,
you know -- you get made fun of.

♪♪

Later that night,
I had to download the photos

Onto our server
for the police department.

So I started going through
all the photographs.

I took about 60 photographs
that night of that accident.

The pictures were coming across
the screen pretty quickly,

And one grabbed my eye.

♪♪

This photo was of
the impact area

Of where the second vehicle
struck the tree.

Within a second of looking
at this photo,

I picked out a face
looking directly at me.

I saw eyeglasses, I saw a nose,
the outline of the head,

And it looked like
it was looking down on me

While I was taking the photo.

It immediately reminded me
of the driver

'cause it had
the same facial features

That the driver
had when I looked at him.

Narrator: But there's something
else in the photo.

Warner: I saw a distinct
black figure to the right,

But it has the same features
of a body --

The head, the body,
the shoulders, the legs.

In my opinion,
that black-figure mass

That I caught in that photo
is the same figure

I saw go
through the trees.

Narrator: He's suddenly overcome
by the same strange feelings

From the crash sites.

Warner: I immediately got
the same uneasy feeling

Where I got that cold air,
I got anxiety, nauseous.

Just super uncomfortable.

The feeling that I had
that night

Was in the exact same spot from
when I took that photograph.

I didn't know
what I caught or what I saw.

I was dumbfounded.

Hey.
What's up?

Would you take
a look at this?

Yeah, sure.

I called one of the other
police officers over.

I showed them the photo,
and immediately,

They saw the same thing
that I saw.

Weird.

Man: It must have completely
freaked you out.

To this day it still does.

Estep:
The black mass is a fairly
ubiquitous visual phenomenon

In the paranormal realm.

Their motives usually
are not good.

One of the possibilities
in this case

Is that the entities
involved are elemental.

Rather than being human spirits,

These could be spirits of the
trees that line the roadside.

These could be spirits
protecting this

Particular stretch of ground.

Warner:
I try to rationalize it.

I looked at every single photo
I took that night.

No other picture
had anything in it.

If there was light that would
have manipulated the photos

In any way, with how fast
I was taking the photos,

It should have been
in multiple photographs,

Not just one
random photograph.

Narrator:
But what rational explanation

Could possibly account
for the photo?

Just kept thinking about
the photo

And I kept thinking about,
you know, what was there

'cause it just didn't
make sense to me.

♪♪

It's believed by some
that photographs

Are a means of communication
between our realm

And the spirit realm.

The eye may not be able
to see those entities,

But the camera seems to be
somehow able to detect them

If the circumstances are right

And they give us a window
into that next realm.

Narrator:
With two fatal accidents
on the same stretch of road,

The presence of a terrifying
shadow lurking in the woods,

And a face of a dead man
appearing from a solid tree,

Officer warner makes
a horrifying connection.

Warner:
All these crashes have something
to do with this energy

Or this black mass
that I saw and I felt.

I would take a significant
amount of energy

To drive a vehicle
off the road.

♪♪

It's also possible that
something was deliberately

Distracting the drivers
and forcing them to crash.

Narrator:
Concerned that a dangerous
entity is haunting the area

And that more lives
are at stake,

The officer returns
to the first crash site

Looking for a clue to try
to explain the unexplainable.

Warner: When I returned back
to the scene

Of the accident...

♪♪

...I immediately got
that anxiety feeling again.

What we find in cases
of negative entities

Is that they tend to
give precursor warning signs

To tell people that
they don't want them in there.

So the entity was actually
trying to get him to leave.

Warner:
It was completely quiet.

You could hear a pin drop
at this point.

♪♪

I believe that there is some
type of energy in that tree.

Narrator: What's unclear is why
the entity has claimed two lives

And how many more might follow?

Warner: I saw what I thought
was a person.

[ creature snarls ]

Hello?

Who's there?!

I think it was on the other side
of the trees.

I could see bits and pieces
of it, not the whole thing.

And looking more closely,
it was a black shadow.

I didn't know where it came from
or what it was.

Narrator: With two dead bodies
in less than 24 hours,

How far will the entity
go to protect its land?

When I saw it continuing
to move forward towards me,

I was [bleep] terrified.

Narrator: While investigating
two fatal accidents

On the same stretch
of road, police officer

Joseph warner is shocked by the
similarities between cases...

Hello?
Who's there?!

...And a sinister
territorial presence.

When photos later confirm
something unnatural

Is lurking in the forest,
he returns to the crash site.

Warner:
When I looked at the photograph,

I still had trouble
putting my mind around it.

I was dumbfounded.

Narrator:
As he nears the tree line,

He comes face to face
with a dark mass.

And it was just me
and this figure.

I believe it was the same black
mass that I saw in the photo.

♪♪

Whatever this was
was definitely aware of me.

♪♪

It was walking straight
towards me.

It definitely had some kind
of interest in me.

It started walking towards me

And getting bigger
and bigger and bigger.

At this point, I actually saw it
go through two sets of trees,

And when it came
in front of the trees...

[ growling ]

...I couldn't see the trees
behind it anymore.

I think this is where it lived.

I was completely terrified.

I don't know what it wanted,
but I don't think it liked me.

Knudsen:
We've got something that seems
to be very territorial

And very negative.

Negative entities
seem to be able, on the whole,

To be able to manipulate
their environment,

Including moving
extremely heavy objects

To frighten the perceiver

Into feeling like
they're out of control.

Police!
I'm not here to hurt you!

Warner: It was just
absolutely horrifying.

[ creature growling ]

I am convinced that I was
dealing with something

That was not good.

I wanted to avoid the area
at all costs.

As I was driving away,

I actually put my lights
and sirens on,

And I drove as fast
as I could away from that scene.

This particular stretch
of highway,

It could be protected
by the spirits of the land.

Drivers report being driven,

Some cases actually
pulled off the highway.

Elemental spirits are a
manifestation of nature itself,

Protecting the environment
from what it sees

As hostile intruders.

Us.

[ creature growls ]

Aah!

[ glass shatters ]

Warner:
And when I left the scene,

I felt like I didn't belong
there and I needed to leave.

I just went back to the office

And just stayed by myself
for a while.

It just didn't make sense to me.

♪♪

So I started going back
through all the photographs.

Narrator: What suddenly stirred
this ancient entity

Into deadly action,
and why has it turned so evil?

When I look at the photo,

I still get the same
nauseous anxiety

Feeling when I focus
on that black figure.

♪♪

This is the complete opposite
logic of what I was ever taught.

Narrator: The officer finds
the answers to his questions

In a set of municipal plans

For an ongoing highway
redevelopment project.

One of the big things
that they were doing

Was they were removing the trees
in the middle of the roadway.

That's where a lot
of the fatalities would occur.

I believe that there is some
type of energy in that tree.

It comes out
in certain situations.

It's definitely protecting
its territory

And causing
very severe car accidents,

Some of them being fatalities.

♪♪

When the natural environment
is changed,

Spirits don't seem to like it,

And they will make
their displeasure known.

The drive's something
that's dark, negative, and evil.

Negative entities are
really all about dominance.

There's often a willingness
to drive out anybody

Who may interfere
with the relationship

That it had built
with that territory.

One of the nicknames I use
for the area

Is the bermuda triangle.

Since then, I never did
any traffic enforcement

Above the 25-mile marker.

I avoided mile markers 25
through 33

'cause every time
I drove through there

To make sure no one
was broken down...

♪♪

...I just had
that anxious feeling

Of I just want
to get out of there.

If you've got a distraction
that's going on in your space,

Not only can you
injure yourself,

But you can injure
the people around you.

So whenever we get paranormal
activity like this in a vehicle,

It's always of concern.

Warner:
This experience made me look
at things in different ways.

It opened me up to
the paranormal world itself.

So it makes more sense to me now
than it did all those years ago.

But to this day...

It still bothers me.
