Woman: Oh, my god,
we're in africa.

...The 40-day challenge began

as four teams stepped on
to the blistering plains

of south africa.

Woman #2:
It's third-degree burns.

Narrator: ...Where banishment

is the ancient law
of the land...

You either got to step up
or you got to step out.

Narrator: ...And surviving
devastating heat...

Man: Oh, my god. Ow!



Narrator: ...Among the world's
most vicious predators...

Jon: What the [bleep] was that?

Those damn crocs, man.

...Made weakness
the ultimate liability.

We're gonna banish you.

Narrator: In that time,

seven have fallen victim
to africa's brutal demands.

My primitive survival problems
leaving right now.

All of them.

Narrator: And the remaining five

set their sights on the finish.

Once part of a team of six,

gwen, jon, sarah and suzanne

have seen their two most
experienced hunters go down.



It's almost the end,
and we're still losing people.

It's... it's scary.

Narrator: And their food
reserves disappear.

Suzanne: Oh, my gosh.

Gwen: That's all there is to eat
right now. That is it.

Narrator: But hope that teamwork
and innovation...

...Bring the protein
they desperately need.

In order for us
to succeed as a team,

we do need good chemistry.

Narrator: And after 20 days
of solo survival...

Bulent: I'm tired,
I've got nothing left.

- Ow.
- That's a snake.

that was the last thing
that I was expecting.

I did have a concern
that nobody might be here.

I was mentally ready for that

because I'm doing
the challenge alone anyway.

But it's great that survivalists
lasted this long.

We don't have to boil
our water here.

So drink up.

what I've been drinking.

It's been a long journey.

sarah: He's kind of a [bleep]

when it comes to making up
nicknames

for people, especially people

that he doesn't necessarily
hold in high regard.

Bulent: They both selfish.

I found seth.

Day 24, he tapped out.

[ sighs ]

so I continued and things
turned out well.

I came into the challenge

with thinking I wouldn't eat
anything for, like, 18, 19 days.

Then I had food on day five.

I was like, "wow."

day six came and
a 35-pound catfish.

I've never caught a catfish
in my life that big.

I had two terrapins.

I ate at least
50 pounds of meat.

At least.

Suzanne: The last thing
you want is somebody saying,

"I've given it my all

and every time I do, I succeed"
because that's a crock.

We all know that's a crock.

I almost caught those big-ass
catfish with my hands.

Suzanne:
But it is also nice to know

that we have another hunter.

Now that ryan tapped,

um, yeah, I'm actually...
I'm excited.

Right now
I'm on day 20 being alone,

and if it's okay with you guys,
I'm gonna continue alone.

I'll be close. I won't be far.

So we'll be still a group.
I'll just sleep somewhere else.

But every time
I catch something,

I have no problem sharing
with you guys

whatever I catch.

Gwen: Right now, every one of us

are pretty much
running on fumes.

Letting him into our area

will increase our odds
of dropping something tomorrow.

I hope we can get some protein
for extraction day.

Bulent: I do have a bow.
You guys have a blind?

There's blinds all
over the place here.

We've got, like, four
or five blind set up

all over the place.

Sarah: You want
to tour the area?

Sure. That would be great.

Hell yeah. Let's do it.

They welcome you with open
arms because I'm the schnitzel.

And I think at this point
of the challenge,

great survivalists,
that's what's left.

But they look worn out.

Their eyes are still good.

They don't have
that thousand-yard stare,

but they're not looking
optimum leaders.

Suzanne:
We're making a crossbow.

Bulent: Oh, wow.
This is beautiful.

Did you guys figure out
the trigger mechanism?

Yeah, yeah. They have a...
It's gonna be...

It's cool. You'll love it. Nice.

You guys dig this out?

Gwen: We did.
And it starts flowing?

Yeah. Wow.

You can see all the moisture
on the ground.

It's drinkable
right from the source.

You don't have to boil it.

That's great. Yeah.

As far as hunting blinds go,

this is blind number one
right behind you.

Blind number two is down
at this other tree

on the opposite side of it.

And look down like as far
as you can see,

that's where the third blind is.

It's just a bunch...
It's like a reed hut.

Basically, you can sit inside,
cannot miss it.

Bulent: I'm gonna go walk
around, look for a spot.

I'm thinking this would do.
It is naturally enclosed.

It got somewhat of a shade.

They're right there.

They're about 100 yards away.

So far away, but close enough.

I want to do everything alone.

I don't want to ask
the group for help.

It is a lot of work,

but somehow I will
make it happen somehow.

Gwen: He's made it known
that he wants to be on his own,

so we now have one more kind of
added to our group,

but he's wanting to be
by himself, which is cool.

Yeah, I mean,
I'm kind of... I get it

because he's done so far,

he might as well
finish it by himself.

For your own personal goal.

I don't think adding
another person at this point

is gonna affect
the dynamic of our camp,

unless you bring
a bunch of drama.

Because we don't want
to do drama.

A kill's imperative now.

We have to be able to get food
for extraction.

Sarah: He's an industrious
little [bleep] isn't he?

- Yeah.
- Yeah, he's been working hard.

I think I'm set for the night.

I'm happy. I'm happy with
the accomplishment of today.

This boma took quite
a bit of work.

It's good enough for tonight.

I can always
beef it up tomorrow.

Hopefully we'll have a kill
tomorrow morning for breakfast.

share my neighbors,

Gwen: Alright, it is
the morning of day 32.

I'm going out this morning

for my first time out
in the blind.

I've waited for this
the whole time I've been here,

like trying to figure out
a way to do this.

So we built a crossbow.

It works great.

Now, the next step
is to get a kill.

I want that first kill bad.

So did we come up
with a schedule?

My opinion on this matter

is we have to let him
go down to those lower blinds.

Mm-hmm.

We can stay up here
and hunt up here.

We know the area up here.

We know what the system
of the animals is up here.

And anything we flush down
from here will go down to him.

Right.

Sarah, thanks for being willing
to go into one of the blinds.

Yeah.

With ryan out of commission,

I definitely feel more of a draw
to step up as hunter.

And the size and tension

of ryan's bow
is something I can manage.

So hopefully I can help my team.

I'm a little nervous, you know.

I still haven't
taken any kind of big game

with the bow before.

Or any kind of game.

Yeah.

Bulent:
Day 32 and I'm ready to go

to morning hunt.

I do want to coordinate
with the rest of the group

to see
if we can have a group hunt.

As far as the schedule,
I'll go hunting twice a day.

Every [bleep] day.
I got no problem with that.

Just tell me which one...

Which blind
you guys want to take.

I'll take the other one
because my entire existence

here is to kill [bleep]

gwen: You drop into
that lower blind

down in the ravine.

It's not that far.
Drop into that one.

And anything that
we don't get up here

will flush down to you.

Winds are blowing,

so smells will run down to him

it'll walk right by your blind.

I got you.

Narrator: As game animals
descend from the east,

sarah and gwen will have good
shots from the upper blinds

or their scent will funnel
the animals downwind

to the lower blind.

I think that's
a great plan, guys.

Yeah. We just need a kill.

Yeah.

Gwen: I'm going out this morning
for my first time

using the crossbow
that we built.

To take a concept in my head

and to be able to turn it
into a functional weapon

and then getting it, you know,
tested out in the field

is really neat, neat process.

So I'm super excited
to go out and hunt today.

The wind is blowing
and it's been coming up.

It's not gonna smell
my scent coming down this way.

Bulent will be down
at the next blind.

If it smells me,
it will run down to him.

Hope the game come in.
[ chuckles ]

Bulent: This is the first time
I came to this blind

and not much of a blind left.

I don't know if it's
the animals or the wind.

Not much of a shade,

but it does make
a good enough blind to hunt.

♪♪

Sarah: I have not killed
anything with a bow,

but at the same time,
I am a rifle hunter.

I know shot placement.
I know animal behavior.

The only part
that's been missing is a bow.

Suzanne: The primary thing that
I need to do before extraction

is make sure that there
are shoes for my feet

and the rest
of my family's feet.

It's very important
for people to feel valued

and to feel like
they're contributing.

And I'm not a hunter,
but we all need shoes

and that is top priority
in my brain.

And I'm fairly certain
it is on everybody's.

I'm making my shoes using
some of the impala hide

and the duct-tape mats,

which are now an insert to give
an extra layer in the shoe,

as well as the fishing line

that I'm using
for threading, basically.

Want this on the outside.

The hard part's
coming around the corner,

but I could go down the sides

and I'm gonna add
a strap back here

to keep it
from this heel coming out.

Jon: So today, we have bulent
and sarah and gwen

getting into blinds.

You know, I'm not much of a
hunter, I'm more of a gatherer.

I've been out here over a month
living like a feral animal.

I am weak,
I am slow, I'm skinny.

But nonetheless, here I am,
taking care of firewood.

And keeping everybody hydrated
is super important.

We have some impala
coming in now.

♪♪

The impala start
coming down over the hill.

And I get my crossbow

and I'm hoping they come
within distance

so that I can shoot one.

And they take the higher trail

that's about 40 yards away
from me,

which is too far of a shot,

and they head down
towards bulent.

♪♪

They're on the move.
There's a bunch of them there.

Bulent's in the little blind.

So hopefully within
the next half-hour to an hour,

he will get a kill.

Bulent: Holy [bleep]

I hear the animals coming down.

Got to get close.

they're coming
from the upper blind.

I can hear and see impala,
but they're out of my range.

It's too far.

Impala came by
and didn't have a shot.

Unfortunately, it looks
like we didn't get anything.

So were you able to see
my hand signs

I was giving you

from where I was sitting
at this morning?

Could you see anything
I was doing?

Bulent: No.

So when I was doing
like "impala coming down,"

you couldn't see
my hand signs like that?

I just see a bunch
of impala coming.

Yeah.

Didn't come down all the way.

Was only one that came down
but was...

I didn't get a shot.

Huh.

It was kind of strange.

There was probably 100 impala

that came over that ridge
this morning.

I hunt to provide
food year-round

for my family in alaska.

Bulent's a strong hunter,

but seems like
it was a super easy shot.

I hope when I moved that
they would push them down

and get them down to
to move to you

because they were
heading that way.

But I guess they didn't
go down to drink right there.

So hopefully they'll be back.

I'm just gonna pass

One sister is the tribal leader

who just tells people
what to do.

But for me to respect
somebody in this survival,

you have to give me something.

I'm thinking maybe tomorrow

one of you guys take this one,

I'll take the one on the bottom.

Gwen: And we just have to
figure out schedules.

I was even thinking,

I'll take the bottom one
in the morning

and then we switch
in the afternoon.

How do you guys want to do it?

Like, if you want to go down
to that blind

down in the ravine at 8:00 a.M.
And hunt until about 11:00.

I just woke up
in the middle of the night.

There's hyenas.

They are vicious predators,

and they are super
strong animals.

Imagine a german shepherd
on steroids.

That's what they look like.

Might not be able
to get to any sleep tonight.

There are about 25 yards
from the boma.

They are definitely close.

They're hungry as well.

[ yawns ]

talk about sleep deprivation.

I think I'm gonna
join you over there

to get in the shade.

Gwen: It's day 33.

Bulent is down at the blind

and I need to be quiet

so that we don't spook off
any animals.

Wasn't much sleep last night.
Because of the hyenas.

So I'm just trying to rest

so I can continue to hunt
for the next several days.

Hey, guys, the whole herd
is moving down the ridge,

but I don't see bulent
down at the blind.

Jon: Really?

Sarah: Wait, he said he was...
He said he was

gonna be down there
this morning.

He's supposed
to be there at 8:00.

The herd is on the move,
but I don't see him

moving at all in response
to the herd coming down.

So I don't know
what is going on.

[bleep]

suzanne: Can you see
if there's a fire

over in his?

It's just smoke.

Sarah: Alright. I'll go over
there and check.

Man.

Yo, bulent.

Knock, knock.

Are you not hunting

You're just gonna sleep?

so that I can go down
in the blind.

And we thought you were

and the entire impala herd

already just came
through the cut.

So we're down there looking,
thinking you were in the blind

watching the impala go by

and wondering why
you weren't taking a shot.

And then we find out
that you're up here sleeping.

It's extremely important
this happens, okay?

Sarah came to my boma,
started yelling and screaming

why I wasn't
where I was supposed to be.

There wasn't even
one common courtesy

that one would show
to their neighbors,

like, "hey, how are you?
Are you feeling alright?

You were supposed to be out
there and you weren't there.

I'm worried. Are you okay?"
none of that [bleep]

she comes start barking
and yelling

that there was no communication,
blah, blah, blah.

So that just shows
their level of courtesy

and understanding
to a fellow survivalist.

That's their problem, not mine.

Apparently, he didn't feel
like hunting this morning.

Suzanne: At all? At all.

And instead of informing us

so that one of us could
take over that duty,

he just slept.

Jon: I'm not entirely surprised,
honestly.

He made it quite clear
when he got here

that he was doing his own thing.

You know, he's not here
to work with the team.

We did miss a hunt. That sucks.

It is not good
for our survival as a team

to have missed a hunt.

The guy's selfish.

Yeah, you can have a discussion
with him and tell him

that he needs to let us know

if he's not going
to go hunting because...

But he doesn't give a [bleep]

he has shown his true colors.

Hit a damn branch.

Got so tantalizingly close.

That is the epitome
of frustrating.

Right freaking there.

When I draw that bow back,
I start to shake.

That's not a good sign.

So I can tell that
I'm getting weak

and that makes it
more difficult to aim.

So I'm thinking about
converting this into a crossbow,

but it's more like a rifle

and that's what I'm more
confident shooting with.

Bulent: Huh.

Last couple of nights,

something always comes
around boma.

I hear them stepping
on the dead leaves,

making that crunchy noise.

[ whispering indistinctly ]

I'm gonna wait to see
if it gets close.

I don't know if I hit him.

Maybe we made a kill.

[ speaks indistinctly ]

I'm gonna try to see
if I can find my arrow.

If it got blood on it,
we did hit him.

He was right here.

There's my arrow.

Nope, no blood.

At least I give it a shot.

I'm happy with it.

Suzanne: Gwen here getting ready

to go hunting with a crossbow.

She's so excited.
Hunting in africa

been a life-long dream.

Well, happy hunting.

It's gonna be
just a little wide,

so I was going
to put a panel here

and then basically like a strap,

a static strap.

I just don't want it
to come off your heel

while you're walking.

Yeah, I don't care
if it moves a little bit.

Suzanne is finishing up
my shoes right now.

She's doing me a huge favor
right now

because I'm not really
too keen on shoe making.

And having shoes on
this extraction is gonna make

our trip much easier
and much faster,

which is the name of the game.

for some firewood.

I would just like
to get a jump on it for tonight.

With looking for firewood,

it's kind of... you're
kind of exploring anyway.

Always get firewood,
but you never know.

There may be a buffalo
thorn bush up here,

maybe some mopane leaves.

If we could find mopane honey
up here,

that'll be [bleep] amazing.

But I haven't really
ever seen any evidence of it.

Looking around in places you
haven't really looked so far.

he's a barehanded killer.

He had every opportunity
to prove himself

and totally dropped the ball.

We got to set it aside.

For survival sake,

we set it aside.

One of the advantages
to this blind here

is I'm so much higher up
and the wind comes

and it drops down
at my back mostly

and it drops down
into this canyon.

So just our presence here
is causing the animals

to go down to our next hunter.

So that works very well
in our favor.

Bulent: Day 35.
I got five days left.

Sun barely came up.

I'm headed to the blind

to wait for the animals
to come in

so I can get some breakfast
for me and everybody else.

So they shut the [bleep] up
for a minute and stop whining

and bitching about everything
on the planet.

Today, I'm going to bring water

because it was brutal
without water.

Gwen: I'll bet you he's not
even in that [bleep] blind.

I looked down the draw
and there's six impala

that are right
outside of his blind,

literally right outside of it.

It's never done this before.

Way more impala
start pouring in.

And there's no movement
in that blind.

At this point, I know bulent is
not in that blind.

There's no way. There's
too many animals down there.

There's probably 15,
20 animals down there by now.

Gwen: Do you think

you're heading
down there to hunt now?

Mm-hmm. They're gone.

There's a [bleep] ton
of animals down there.

They're all there. Seriously?

They've been down there
for, like, two [bleep] hours.

Impala, everything was within...

You could have reached out
and slit their throats.

Everything is down there.

Probably 30 animals.

And you guys didn't get nothing?

of the tribe.

She barks orders,
doesn't do much.

It's about pointing finger,

accusing somebody
of your own failure.

I've been trying.

They got to bitch at everything.

And every animal in the valley

is down there
right outside of his blind,

literally could step out,

take the animal
and go like this.

Everything.

I mean, it would have been
the easiest shot ever.

Sarah: So this is
the second time

that we've missed out
on a hunting opportunity.

because there were
so many animals down there,

1,000% guaranteed shot.

Any one of you could have
got anything down there.

It's sickening because
it would have been an easy kill.

We would have had food
for the rest of the time

we were here easily.

Any one of those that you hit,

would have got us
through the rest of the week.

I know we all know that one
of our options is banishment.

Is he causing us more grief

still going strong.

I still got more energy
than all of them combined.

They want somebody
to make a kill for them.

And when the things doesn't go
their way, they start bitching.

This cooperation between me
and their group is not working.

I don't need stress.

Neither raise my blood pressure

because they just keep bitching

and instead of doing something.
