Naked and Afraid: Last One Standing (2023–…): Season 1, Episode 1 - Porcupines, Moose and Bears: Oh My! - full transcript

All-stars Laura Zerra and Steven Hall must battle hostile porcupines, moose and bears in the below-freezing temperatures of Alaska's boreal forest.

[Cheeny] This is different.

[Steven] This is something
we've never done before.

[Jeff] I came here to win.

[Steven] I wanna win.

[Dan] This is a
whole new challenge.

[Wes] The game just
got a little tougher.

You gotta watch your back
for not just animals this time

but for the other survivalists.

[Waz] Run!

Yeah!

[exclaiming]

[Narrator] For a decade,

they conquered the most
punishing environments on Earth...

[man] Ow!

Oh, [bleep]!

My God!

[Narrator] Mastering
extreme survival.

[shouting] Look at that!

[screaming] Yeah!

[shouting] Caiman!

[Narrator] Now, for
the first time ever,

twelve of Naked and Afraid's
most skilled survivalists

will compete head-to-head

for 45 days in the
South African bush...

[cheering and laughing]

[Narrator] To crown
the best of the best...

[shouting] Yeah!

[Narrator] And win $100,000.

This is what I live for.

[Narrator] To win, they
must compete for resources

in six unique environments...

Go! Go!

[Steven] We've
never done this before.

[Stacey] We have no
idea what to expect.

[Narrator] Pass a series
of primitive survival tests.

[Gary] I'm the first one done.

Good luck, ladies and gentlemen.

[laughing]

[Sarah] We need to find the bow.

[Narrator] And out strategize
each other at every turn.

[Amber] Oh, I see
something, I see something!

[Waz] Now it's just a race who
can make a ladder fast enough.

[Jeff] I will do anything
to win this challenge.

[Narrator] Failure
means elimination.

No body's ever been eliminated
from a Naked and Afraid.

I know I've got a big
target on my back.

[Narrator] As pressure mounts...

You wanna tell me what happened?

This is a competition.

You think about
you and no one else.

[Narrator] And tensions rise.

If this was a normal life,
this would start a war.

- I don't trust ya.
- Oh.

You understand that, right?
That makes sense to you.

- Cut his nuts off.
- [Sarah] Thank you.

Competition every day,
don't bitch about [bleep] losing.

[Narrator] Only one
will reach the end.

[crying]

[Dan] This is hard.

The strong survive,
the weak die.

[sighing] Oh.

[Narrator] Who
will be eliminated?

Who will break?

This challenge is so real.

[Narrator] And who will
be the last one standing?

The Oribi Gorge, South Africa.

A volatile chasm of
unpredictable weather

with radical temperature swings

and violent electrical storms.

This punishing terrain
has been carefully chosen

to test competitors' whole
arsenal of survival skills.

This is a competition, this
is what I've been waiting for!

This time there's
only one winner.

[Steven] When you wave a
$100,000 carrot in front of somebody,

attitudes and
reflections change.

[Narrator] They have different
strategies but share one common goal.

I'm gonna win this challenge.

[Narrator] Every
competitor has been given

a primitive survival
rating, or PSR.

Calculated by experts,

the PSR measures each
survivalist's range of skills

based on their performance
in previous challenges.

[Steven] I am the king.

Nobody's completed as many
Naked and Afraid challenges as me.

Nobody's been in as
many environments.

I've never lost.

I got the biggest crown

and I plan on keeping it.

[dramatic music playing]

[Amber] I wanna
win that $100,000

and I'm gonna work
my butt off to get it.

Being ex-military, I am
incredibly competitive.

This is what we call dinner.

[screaming]

I have 148 days in the wild.

Yeah!

- [woman] No way.
- This is thriving right here.

I am motivated, dedicated,

ready to go out there and
grab that bull by the horns

and not look back.

[Dan] I have no idea
what we're getting into.

Absolutely no clue.

In every challenge I've
gone into, I've prepared.

Being a scientist, I love
preparation, knowledge, research.

I'm kind of a
jack of all trades,

I think, when it comes to
my skill sets and my abilities.

That kind of diverse skill set

is exactly what's gonna
be needed out here.

[Sarah] I live survival
every day of my life.

This is a constant
state of being for me.

I'm always down for a
little friendly competition.

but the stakes here are so high

that there's no room
for being friendly.

I'm coming in confident.

I'm not just good at one
thing, I'm good at everything.

At the end of this challenge there's
only gonna be one person standing,

and what's unfortunate
for everyone else

is that one person left standing
will be this guy right here.

[Gwen] I was a police
officer for many years.

One of the skills that I
learned was reading people.

Very good about sitting back,

watching how other
people handle situations.

The ability to read people is gonna
definitely aid me in this challenge immensely.

Let's do this.

[Stacey] It's dangerous
to underestimate me.

I deserve to be here
because I earned it.

I'm the wildcard.

You know what the wildcard is?

The joker!

People think I'm a loose canon

that's just stumbling
through these challenges.

Being underestimated like
that might work to my advantage

to end up being the
last one standing.

They'll be surprised when
they see me on day 45.

They all wanna take me
out because they know

I've done so many
of these challenges

I have a huge target on my back.

I'm Matt friggin'
Wright, the savage.

[whispering] I'm
dangerous when I'm hungry.

I've done things that
are near impossible.

If anyone wants to
win this competition

they're gonna have
to come through me.

[cheering] Yeah! Ooh.

A challenge like this, it's
gonna bring out the weasels.

People have
misunderstood me for years

because of my cutthroat attitude

[cheering]

[woman] I hate it.

The Naked and Afraid challenge

should've been a
competition from the get go.

[shouting] Yes!

It is neighbors not roommates
and now everybody's on board.

Let's go.

[Narrator] In the end, there
can be only one winner,

but for the first 21
days of the challenge,

to prove they're the
best of Naked and Afraid,

each person must
survive working as a pair.

- Oh, hey.
- [Wes] There you are.

- I'm Amber.
- Hey, Amber, I'm Wes.

- What?
- [Gary] Who's that? Oh.

- What?
- Gary.

[both laughing]

We meet again.

We meet again, naked.

Don't chop any
trees down, please.

[Gary] Looks like it's
me and Waz, again.

Hopefully it goes a
little better this time.

Last time I was with Waz
I had to leave on day two.

Some of the sap got in my eyes

The sap is poisonous.

[breathing heavily]
I'm in big trouble.

He needs to run to the hospital,

see if they can't
get him sorted out

so that there's no
permanent long term damage.

Whether it was a
competition or not,

I don't wanna have
to leave like that again.

Let's check out what's
in these bags here.

- Oh, geez, that feels light.
- They're really light.

[laughing nervously]

- Oh, oh, shoot!
- Oh, no.

This is new.

We have empty bags starting?

Yeah, this is new.

The basic foundation of
surviving is food, water, fire, shelter,

but I don't have a knife.

I don't have a ferro rod.

[Sarah] Day one.

[Steven] So this is us
right here, obviously.

I assume so.

Got the gorge, got the river.

- Is there anything on the back?
- Ooh.

- Oh.
- Oh, wow.

[Stacey] To become
the last one standing

you must survive 45 days
in this African wilderness.

[Gwen] You begin this
challenge with nothing.

Yeah, we found that out.

Every seven days you will
migrate to a new survival location

- to test the limits of your skill and endurance.
- Ohh.

All right, we're nomads.

For the first 21 days you and
your partner must survive together.

- Okay.
- Your fates are connected.

If either partner chooses
to tap out of the challenge

- both... [gasps]
- Holy [bleep].

Both will be eliminated.

Oh, [bleep].

- Oh, oh.
- [laughing]

You are definitely not
chopping any trees down, Gary.

- [laughing] Oh, my gosh!
- I know, right?

- I'm not tapping.
- I won't either.

I've never voluntarily
tapped anywhere.

[Wes] Me either.

Oh, my God.

- Okay.
- All right.

Well holy crap.

[laughing] I didn't
see that coming, baby.

Let's just get down this trail
and then see what we find.

There's gotta be something else
there because this isn't enough.

Right.

I don't trust anybody

and now I have to trust Stacey,

a woman I've
never survived with,

a stranger, with everything.

It's...

And that's
[chuckling] pretty wild.

This-a-way.

- Let's do it.
- Yeah.

[Matt] This is gonna
be quite the challenge.

and if you wanna
make it to the top

you have to jump some hurdles.

Hurdle number one?

Survive 21 days
partnered up with Gwen.

- We gotta find water first and foremost.
- [Steven] We gotta find water,

we gotta get a fire going,

we gotta find some good canopy.

- Yeah.
- We need our tools.

[Steven] Usually, we have the
essential things that we need,

and we have a map.

All right, let's do it.

If we don't get these
tools, we will not survive.

[Narrator] With just
five hours until sunset,

all pairs must establish camp

before the arrival of nightfall's
hypothermic conditions.

[Wes] Okay, this is different.

Find some items,

-ferro rod and something
to cut with -[Amber] Ahh.

- would be excellent.
- [Amber] Yeah.

[Amber] I wanna make sure we're
prepared with the basic essentials first

because it is so cold.

It's just not the weather
you would expect for Africa

and I don't wanna risk
getting hypothermia out here.

[Narrator] As cold
air from the Atlantic

collides with warm air
from the Indian Ocean

updrafts from the sheer
stone walls of the gorge

generate some of the most
violent weather systems in Africa.

Here temperatures can spike
at over 100 degrees Fahrenheit

and plunge to near freezing
within a matter of hours.

If you see dry tinder
go ahead and pick it up.

- [Amber] Good call.
- [Wes] Let's start jamming our bag with dry stuff

- when it's available.
- Yeah.

[Wes] It's a competition

but it's also a
survival challenge.

You gotta survive
through the night.

[Jeff] Obviously we have
nothing, no supplies, right?

[Stacey] Right. We'll probably
need a knife and a pot.

[Jeff] Yeah.

[Stacey] I feel a little nervous

about being partnered with Jeff.

He's pretty well
known to be cutthroat,

not willing to share.

Hey, Jeff, do you have
any interest in anything

that you'd be willing
to trade for hooks?

We definitely are trying to
hold on to every hook we have.

We are not here
to give handouts.

Naked and Afraid XL
is not a welfare program.

[Stacey] Our fate's
being intertwined,

We'll be together
for the next 21 days,

so we'll see how that goes.

[Steven] Oh.

- I see another map.
- [Sarah] Thank the gods.

- All right.
- What do we got on this?

- Wow.
- This looks interesting.

So these must be the
different groups maybe?

Or no, these are...

[both] These are items!

Oh, [bleep]!

There probably sitting
out there right now.

[Matt] All right, it says, "You
will need to work together

and use your survival skills
to earn the resources cached

in the environment around you."

[Narrator] Throughout
their 45 days,

survivalists will be led by a
series of topographical maps.

Overlaid with
environmental landmarks,

each seven day map reveals
the location of survival items

cached in the surrounding area.

A machete, pot and fire starter

are available to all teams.

But a limited supply
of advanced items,

such as bows, pelts,
and scavenged kills,

will give the survivalists
with the skill to find them

an advantage in the competition.

-[Steven] First
priority, -[Sarah] Yeah.

[Steven] pot and a fire starter.

There's no point
in getting a bow

if we can't cook
whatever we kill.

[Sarah] Yeah.

Ooh, here we go.

- This could be useful.
- [Steven] Nice.

Is that a femur?

[Sarah] Yep, it's,
like, kudu or eland.

[Jeff] It shows
the pot on our left

up here somewhere.

If we do find this pot,

the next question is
what do we go after next?

So, I think we'd have
to go after one of these

advanced survival
items they call it.

- [Stacey] Yeah.
- [Jeff] Okay.

[Dan] So, this is a map
of our whole vicinity.

[Cheeny] Yeah.

So we gotta get down here.

- [Cheeny] Up there.
- [Dan] Oh, you're right.

Elevation's going up.

- Look at the contour lines.
- [Dan] Okay.

[Cheeny] So if we follow
that trail up, we'll find our pot.

I've been teaching land
navigation for 12 years.

I was a SERE
specialist for eight years.

SERE specialist is an
expert in survival, evasion,

resistance and escape.

I'm one of the few women that have
made it through SERE specialist training.

So, when I open up the
map and I see contour lines,

I see a compass
rose and a scale,

I just breathe a little easier

knowing that I'm gonna be
able to navigate this terrain.

- Going up so the pot should be...
- [Dan] Here.

Over here somewhere,
like, 100-feet.

Let's go over here.

[Dan] Well, the
trail's right there,

it might be up
and in just a bit.

[Cheeny] What is
that? Oh, there it is.

- [Dan] You got it?
- [Cheeny] Yeah, you gotta be, like, up high to see it.

It's down in the bush.

[Dan] Over [bleep] there.

Hey, nice!

- The saw back.
- [Cheeny] Oh, right on.

Oh, there's something inside.

[items clattering in pot]

- [Dan] Oh, yes.
- [Cheeny] Perfect.

[Dan] Cheeny seems solid,

someone who gets [bleep] done,

someone who is athletic,
strong, and smart as [bleep].

Cheeny can help
me get to day 21.

-Really need to figure out
some personal protection, -Yes.

shelter, fire.

[Dan] All right.

[Cheeny] With the way
that the day is going,

I don't care about items.

I want a shelter over my
head and I want a fire ripping.

This challenge is
the last one standing.

We're trying to see
who's the best survivalist.

- Here's a pot in here.
- [Matt] Nice.

[Matt] We've got a way
to boil water. That's huge.

We've got a knife.

All right, so, I know
it's late in the day,

but right now one
of our best strategies

might just be think
a few steps ahead

and just see if we can obtain
any items that are close by.

[Gwen] I don't mind
looking around the area here,

but we're definitely
gonna have to figure out

what we're doing
for shelter tonight.

We got the basics to be able to
start fire, to be able to boil water,

and to be able
to build a shelter,

but Matt wants
his bow, basically,

is what it comes down to.

-So this one that we're
heading to says, -Yeah, there's...

"Use your bushcraft skills

- to reach a hunting asset above you."
- Mmm-hmm.

[Matt] Could be a
weapon, could be a bow.

It looks like somewhere
around about 450

- there's gonna be a trail or a large tree.
- [Gwen] Yeah.

[Matt] For me, a bow
doesn't just give me an item,

it gives me inspiration, it
gives me the possibility to thrive,

to get leather, to get meat.

Nothing's gonna keep
me from getting my bow.

- [Matt] Gonna have to look around pretty hard.
- It shouldn't be far.

[Steven] I'm gonna
walk down there

- and start getting stupid amount of that grass.
- [Sarah] Okay,

I'm gonna start weaving.

[Steven] Priority
number one is shelter,

and Sarah and I are
both on the same page.

It's essential to have some sort of
barrier between you and the elements.

[Sarah] I'm essentially making
[chuckling] a human-sized inverted nest,

and that involves weaving a lot of
sticks through a lot of other sticks

so that we have more space to
put other debris over the top of this.

And eventually, that's
going to, again, buildup,

help keep the heat in,
help keep the water out.

[Matt] I'll tell
you what's tricky

about hunting for an
object and not an animal.

-The object's not
leaving tracks, -[chuckles]

it's not leaving scent rubs.

It's gonna make
it pretty difficult

to be in the exact
spot to spot that thing.

It's gonna be right
at the bottom of...

- I mean, look...
- Oh, very similar

- because this is the tree that way.
- There's that one there.

I mean, this tree right here is looking
just like that image on the picture.

What am I looking at?

That appears to be about a 60
inch longbow with a quiver on top.

How do I know this? That's what
I asked for Christmas every year.

- Found the bow?
- Yep.

This is a bit of a
predicament right here.

This is a Euphorbia tree. This is
a highly poisonous species of tree.

[Narrator] Known for its
corrosive white tree sap,

contact with the toxic
latex of the Euphorbia

would require immediate
medical attention

and removal from the challenge.

[Matt] You can't climb it,
you can't just chop it down.

I think I'm gonna
have to build a ladder

to be able to climb that
without touching the tree.

-We're gonna have to make
a lot of rope -Some cordage.

and a five or six rung ladder.

That's so close but yet so far.

[Jeff shouting] Yeah, baby! Woo!

- Hey, Gwen, you hear those people?
- I do.

Oh, yes! Oh, yes!

And there's a fire
starter in there.

- No, shut up.
- Yeah.

- We got it. [laughs]
- We can do this! Yes!

[Jeff] Woo!

- [Matt] So, yeah.
- They definitely found something.

Somebody's hollering it.

[Matt] Day one and I'm
already hearing voices.

[Jeff]

There's Jeff.

And it's been rumored that
thunder actually covers his ears

when Jeff yells.

The man is loud.

- I know what we're not doing.
- Here.

-We're not gonna yell every
time we find something -Right?

-because when yelling notify
-Then we'll notify everybody else.

not just the animals but also
the other people that are out here.

Yes.

- 56, 57.
- Did you find it?

[Jeff] Not yet.

Sixty-ish.

So, it should be
basically in your area here.

What the [bleep] is it?

It'd be easier if I knew
what I was looking for.

So, it says, "Search the area to
find an advanced survival tool."

It could be up or it could
be down. I think I'm way off.

I hear a guy and a girl.

I definitely hear
somebody's pot.

Let's go check it out.

Jeff, think we've gone too far.

[Gwen] Hey.

Hey! Who's that?

[Gwen] Matt and Gwen.

- [Stacey] Hey!
- [groans softly]

[Jeff] Holy [bleep],
what's up, guys?

- [Matt] Oh, we got Stacey and Jeff?
- [Gwen] Wow.

[Jeff] Yo, what's up?

[Gwen] So, what have
you guys found so far?

- We've just found a pot. Yeah, and the machete.
- The pot and machete?

So, let's see if our
maps match up.

So, oh, survival strategy.
Don't let him see all of our map.

-I want to see if they're the
same -Oh, you want this?

because then we're going
after the same assets.

- I have a feeling we're all...
- I think it is.

-We're all going after
the same assets -It is.

because they're identical.

It is alarming to know that we're
all here, very close proximity,

competing for the same
resources, the same items.

Well, I just found this bow

but I'm not about to tell them
the details that it's stuck in a tree.

Well, we won't tell you
what we found yet then.

-[chuckles] -You're
keeping that a secret, huh?

- Covert ops.
- Oh, [bleep].

- Already, Matt?
- Let's just say there's not everything's there.

- Oh, are we going there already, huh?
- You know, no, no.

You can't trust Jeff. I've
learned it and I'll stand by it.

-All right, well, -[Gwen] Okay.

- this'll be fun.
- [Matt] Yeah.

[Jeff] Matt wasn't
trusting me right off the bat

but that's to be expected.

I know there's a
target on my back.

That was interesting. You think
they got that advanced survival item?

- I bet Matt went straight for the bow on that side.
- You think?

Yeah.

[Jeff] I respect Matt.

He's good at what
he does and so am I.

In a competition with
$100,000 on the line,

if you think that
there is any part of me

that does not expect to be the last
person standing you are absolutely wrong.

I'm here to win.

[Matt] That bow is a first come
first serve. Time is of the essence.

In a challenge like this it's
gonna bring out the weasels.

Well, I'm not afraid
to skin a weasel.

[Matt] Do you want to possibly
get that bow out of the tree?

[Gwen] We're late in the day,
the wind right now is coming.

[Matt] Yeah, we're kind
of on the darker side.

[Gwen] Feel like it's getting
dark. It's gonna be a wet night.

Having tools as a survivalist,
they're niceties not necessities.

Trying to knock that ladder out

is going to burn
up a lot of time

and it's going to
be detrimental to us

getting a shelter built,
getting water boiled,

so it's super important that we match
our basics first and then play the game.

[Matt] It looks like we got a
little bit of bush crafting tomorrow.

[Gwen] I'm up for it.

That little ruse
that I pulled on Jeff,

it's buying some time for Gwen
and I to be able to get this bow,

but there's some big
storm clouds coming in.

So, priority number
one is shelter.

[thunder rumbling]

- [Cheeny] The rain's moving in.
- Wind kinda comes from here.

[Dan] I mean, this will
be just, like, a straight wall.

I was gonna get more support
beams to go from here that way.

- [Cheeny speaking] -Yeah.
- This is gonna be perfect.

[Cheeny] Cold weather
is my Achilles heel.

I've got Raynaud's,
the circulatory condition

that affects your
hands and feet.

So, I get cold a lot
faster than other people.

This is a nonstop
battle at night.

It's [bleep] ridiculous.

My last three outer
toes have been numbed.

My hands will actually
make these claws

and they'll lock up, and
then I can't use them.

And that could even be
grounds for a med tap out here.

I didn't come all this
way to be med tapped.

This is the support beam?

[Dan] Yeah, kinda just like
grid them across the top.

With the brutal temperatures
and the rain that's coming in,

if we get caught in a rain

and my partner taps
out, taking me out, too,

like, it's crucially important
to make yourself comfortable,

even if we're only gonna
be here for a little bit.

- [Dan] Doing really good.
- [Cheeny] Yeah, yeah.

[water splashing]

[Waz] We're lucky it's pretty
close walk back to camp.

Gonna take a quick
walk on the way back.

There are two bow and arrows
marked down on the map.

One near me, and one all
the way up the other end.

Gonna take a quick walk
and see if I can't spot it.

Looking for a tree.

Every tree looks like the tree.

But on the map, it does say,

"Use your bushcraft skills".

To... ooh, hang on.

Hang on, hang on.

Yes.

Right there. That's
what I'm after.

I mean, I'm assuming it's a
bow. A bow and some arrows.

I can't climb up the tree,
obviously, that's a poisonous tree.

Highly toxic.

I'm gonna walk back up I'm
gonna have a chat with Gary,

and come up with something

that is able to get
us up there 20 feet.

Oh, it smells like smoke.

I have some news.

- Huh?
- I found a bow and arrow.

- You did?
- It is up a tree.

[Waz] 20 feet in the air.

[Gary] I can climb that tree.

- [Waz] Cannot climb that tree.
- How do you know?

[Waz] Because the tree
is extremely poisonous

and you cannot climb the tree.

Yeah, but is it spiny?

[Waz sighs]

Survival for me is
about risk mitigation.

And survival for Gary
is a little bit different.

But now that my
fate is tied to him,

uh, that makes it, uh,

it makes it worrisome,
to say the least.

We can make a
pretty simple ladder,

and then, guess what? I'll
let you climb up the ladder.

-[laughs] -I just won't let
you climb up the tree, Gary.

I'm not risking it.

[Gary] I'm more into
the gamble than Waz is.

And I definitely think my
tree climbing might serve

to give me an advantage
in this challenge.

There's probably
three teams going for it

- at sunup tomorrow.
- [laughs]

[Waz] "Get out of the way!"

I don't know how many
people have found this one.

I know I have.

So, my plan is to go
first thing in the morning

see if Gary and I can't
get this out of the tree

before anyone gets a
chance ever to get back there.

- [Waz] Good job, buddy.
- Yeah.

[Wes] Oh, the weather
looks like it's coming in.

That's not a good scenario.

[Amber] Yeah, it's getting
dark. Can you see that?

[Wes] Yeah.

[Amber] We have seven days, so
natural canopy would be huge for us

because it's less work
to prevent the rain.

- [Wes] Agreed.
- Anything with the thickest canopy

- is honestly underneath there.
- Let's do that.

It's so beneficial to have a shelter
that's already pre-staged for you,

so you don't have to work hours
and hours to build this shelter,

especially if we're only gonna
be here for six to seven days.

Keep going. Get that
combustion... there it is.

Think we would've, uh, definitely
made the wrong choice by

going for other items.

I would agree.

Imagine if we got
back here at dusk.

[clicks tongue] Gotta be close.

[Stacey] This is a tough one.

[Jeff] I think it's worth
trying to get this one for sure.

[Stacey] Aw, hell.
It's starting to rain.

I mean, now that we know it's in
this general area, do you think...

you know, we should split
up and maybe I should go

start looking for
another, and...

[Stacey] No.

He's all over the [bleep]
map. He wants the caches.

He's really, like,
all about winning.

[sighs] I know
we're really close,

but feeling tired.

- Okay.
- And, like, I wanna start working

because I'm getting cold.

- Okay.
- So let's find a place to build shelter.

[Jeff] Yeah.

- [Stacey] We've got enough for the night, I think.
- Yeah.

[Jeff] We've been
searching all afternoon

for advanced survival items

and we haven't
found anything yet.

It's, it's frustrating.

Tomorrow morning, that's
the time we're gonna maximize.

We're gonna take
what we learn tonight

and we're gonna go out
and see what we can find.

[Gwen] There's
hard-working Matt,

bringing in some rain cover.

[Matt] Just trying.

Our shelter is pure garbage

because we didn't
have time to build it.

[Gwen] We're kinda using
our map to patch the roof.

It's not doing a ton of good, but it's
something. It's better than nothing.

This is not what a night in
Africa was supposed to be like.

[Dan] That firewood's awesome.

[chuckling] Think we're gonna
be pretty comfortable, actually.

[Cheeny] Our shelter kicks
ass, our firewood's awesome...

We gotta get this fire going.

[groans] Oh, boy.

[sighs]

[Dan] [bleep]. I'll see if I can
go gather some more kindling.

Argh! What the [bleep]?

It's raining, it's too
cold, I've got Raynaud's.

That's bad. It can
get to a point where

the medics are like,
"You're out." I can't risk that.

So we really have
to get a fire going.

Oh, come on.

[Dan] Put it on top.

[Cheeny groans] Oh, boy.

Naked and frustrated.

[Dan] God damn it.

- [Dan coughs]
- [Cheeny groans]

- [Dan] Ah, [bleep].
- No, no, no.

[Cheeny] God damn it!

[Dan speaking]

[Cheeny speaking]

[Dan speaking]

Whoo!

[Cheeny] Dan came
in with the dry leaves,

and eventually we got
everything to take off.

Thank God, because I
would've been in serious [bleep]

if I couldn't stay warm.

[Dan] Take that,
rainstorm. Whoo!

- [Dan] Grass time.
- Grass time.

- [Dan] My God, we got a lot of grass.
- We do.

[Dan speaking]

[Cheeny speaking]

[Dan] It's really nice.

Got your firewood, a nice bed.

We're doing good.

- [Cheeny speaking]
- Yeah.

[thunderclap]

It's, like, so cold. You can
see our breath out there.

Yeah, it's, uh,
it's really rough.

I don't think we're
sleeping at all tonight.

'Cause all we can do is,
is, you know, fuel this fire

and then battle the rain.

[thunderclap]

[Matt] It's been raining like
a son of a bitch. It's cold rain.

Both of us have literally been
shut down to where we, um...

we can't, we can't
really function very good.

Amazon... or, I mean, [bleep], I
don't even know where I am right now.

[bleep] Africa.

But, uh...

[exhales]

[Matt groans]

- [Matt] That was a hell of a night.
- [Gwen] Yeah, it was.

[Gwen speaking]

My whole body just aches.

My head's splitting.

I wake up in the morning,
my head is splitting in half.

It's the most awful headache
I have ever experienced

in my entire life.

There's things that
have to be done.

I think I definitely need to
improve on our shelter today.

[Matt] Yeah, let's
waterproof this enough to...

that we can get a restful night.

So early in the game that, uh...

no rest now could
mean you don't make it,

you know, later down the line.

Screws up the whole plan today.

- [Gwen] I guess.
- We were gonna make it up there and get that bow.

There's a bow
up there in a tree.

And I was hoping to
start building a ladder,

but my survival
is not just myself,

but also with my partner.

I need to make sure it's not
another night like last night.

So, priority number
one is that shelter.

[Steven] Hardest
night in the books.

- [Sarah] Yeah, first night always sucks.
- Ten bucks.

Should probably go
on an excursion today.

- Yep.
- Find some stuff that's gonna

benefit our situation here.

- [Sarah] I'd say go for the nearest one.
- Yeah.

- [Steven] Do you wanna go for this guy?
- Yeah.

[Steven reading] "To reach
the hunting asset above you..."

- That's weirdly specific.
- Yeah.

Yesterday, we certainly prioritized
having shelter, fire, and water.

We've got our bases pretty
much covered at this point.

We can reprioritize to
getting those caches.

Because there's a lot
of options on this map

that help us further our
chances in the challenge.

[Steven] Let's hydrate up.
You wanna do wheels up

- in, like, 10 or 15?
- Yeah.

[Wes] It's the number one thing
you do in survival, gather firewood.

[Amber] This morning, we really
need to focus on getting firewood

because last night was so cold

and rainy.

This should do pretty good.

Hypothermia could
happen out here.

Which would be horrible,
to leave a challenge

in South Africa for hypothermia.

It was bad.

[animal snorting]

- What the [bleep] was that?
- I don't know.

[Wes] Now let's just go slow.

[animal snorts]

- [Wes] Oh, hold on.
- Nope. Nope.

[Amber] What is here?

Oh, my gosh.

[animal snorting]

- [Wes] Hey, now. Hey, now.
- [snorting]

[Wes] Yeah, it was
definitely huffing ass.

Sounded like it could've
been a springbok.

[Amber] We don't have a bow.

- [Amber laughs]
- Yeah, right?

- We're like, "Ahh!"
- Oh, but I've got this wicked machete.

[Amber] You know, you could
do a lot with that machete, man.

You know, its South Africa.
There's animals to hunt.

And I had extreme success

in South Africa last time.

- [Klipspringer bleats]
- [man] Good job, Wes.

We're eating Klipspringer, cuz.

Right now, we have a machete.

And that's really
not gonna cut it.

[Amber] We need to find the bow.

- [Amber] Should we just suck it up and go?
- I'd say yeah.

[Amber] I just started
shooting right-handed,

- so either left or right, I'm an ambidextrous shooter.
- Cool.

I'm looking forward to
actually getting a bow

and going out there and hunting.

Gonna put my skills to the test

to be the last one standing.

- [Stacey] So we're going up?
- Yeah, we're going up in elevation.

[Stacey] This is the least
friendly trail on the planet.

[sighs]

Last night was awful.

That stupid shelter
we have right now has

no roof over our heads.

And Jeff wants to go out
there and find the caches now

before we secure
any sort of shelter,

which is really stupid.

Because I'm thinking it's
gonna be raining again tonight.

One pinky. Another pinky,

so two pinky widths...

from the intersection.

Most people probably don't
know, but I was a cartographer

right out of college,
and so, I know maps.

So, two pinky widths

is about 200 feet.

Yesterday we learned
a lot about the map,

we learned a little bit
about how to pace out

and measure distances.

So, for me, I feel like I
already have an advantage

to find and acquire these items.

So, 33 paces plus...
let me get a little more.

[Waz] You wanna head down and
I can show you this bow and arrow,

- and we can come up with a plan?
- Yeah.

- All right, bud.
- Yeah, let's...

I wanna try and get on it before any
other teams start heading that way.

- Yeah.
- Need to snatch that thing out of the sky.

[Waz] There are two bow and
arrows marked down on the map.

I don't know how many people
have found the one I found yesterday.

But that's our bow.
We just need to get it.

Here we go. Right there.

[Gary] Oh. Wow.

[Waz] Just, uh, you're
gonna have to bet 20 feet.

[Gary] I'm six foot, so it only
needs to lean about there.

- And then you got the length of the machete, so...
- Yeah.

It doesn't need to be that long.

[Waz] Yeah. Okay,
well, just stand on it

- and just whack that string.
- Yeah.

The bow looks like it's
tied on with one strap.

So, the plan is to cut
the tree down tall enough

with a Y at the top

to hug the tree that
the bow and arrow is in,

and to have Waz
hold it at the bottom

and I climb up and I go
get that bow and arrow.

- This one?
- No, that's the poisonous one.

[Waz] Maybe this one here?
It's got a Y at the top that'll hold it.

- [Gary] That's a poisonous one.
- Oh, [bleep], it is.

- [Waz] All the good ones are poisonous ones.
- [laughs]

[Gary] That Y right there.

- Damn.
- That's not the one.

[Gary] Damn.

Well, that just figures.

[laughs]

[Amber] Who is that
laughing over there?

- [Wes] Is that you, Waz?
- [Gary] Who's that?

[Waz] We got a couple of
naked people over here, Gary.

[Amber] Hey, Gary.

Is your guys' area over here?

[Waz] It's up,
just up a tiny bit.

So you guys are
here for the bow, then.

- [Waz] Um, yeah.
- [Gary] Yeah.

- [Waz] Yep.
- [Amber] Okay.

[Amber] And where's the
bow? At the top, I'm assuming?

[Gary] So, it's like...

[Waz] It's pretty high up a
tree, it's about 20 feet up a tree.

[Gary] So, yeah.

Oh, my gosh.

- [Waz] Wanna go look at that one?
- Huh?

[Waz] Sorry, we'll let you guys
through if you wanna go through.

- [Wes] All right, guys.
- [Waz] All right, guys, good luck.

- [Wes] To you as well.
- Thanks.

These interactions are a little
awkward, because, you know,

I've been a crutch to a lot of
people in these challenges.

[chuckling] And now we're
competing against each other.

We're playing a game.

When you play poker, you don't
play with your cards facing outwards.

[laughs] It's really that
simple, really, right?

[Wes] Did just see
them right there.

[Amber] Yeah, let's go look
over here and see if it's down here.

[Waz] That's not a
poisonous one right there, is it?

The one that's
going up like this?

[Gary] No, it's not.

We have a clock on us now,
so we need to do it quickly.

With Amber and Wes
walking along the path

towards where the
bow and arrow is,

now it's just a race who can
make a ladder fast enough.

[Wes speaking]

[Gary] Let's go. We wanna
be the ones that own it.

[Amber] Look for a 20-foot tree.

Oh, I see something,
I see something!

- [Wes] I see 'em!
- [Amber] I see it, I see it!

Build a ladder.
Do some climbing.

[Amber] Mmm-hmm.

[Waz exhales] Come on, my guy.

Yeah, it's all right. Good.

[Waz] Jesus.

[Waz chopping]

[Wes] We're building a ladder.

We're leaning up there.

[Amber] We're running a
little bit of a time crunch,

because Gary and Waz are around
the bend building their stuff right now.

I'm trying to think of a
possibly different style ladder

that might be more effective.

Like, one trunk
with notches cut out?

[Waz] It's ready.

[Gary] Oh, yeah, baby.

As soon as we've
got this ready to go,

- we've got that bow in hand.
- [Gary] Gotcha.

- [Wes] See it back there?
- [Amber] Uh-huh.

[Amber] Let's do that.

[chanting] Hercules!
Hercules! Hercules!

- [Amber] All right.
- [Wes] Be careful.

- [Gary] Yeah.
- [Wes] Be careful.

[Waz] Let's see if this does it.

[Gary] Ah.

- [Waz] I think I might like that.
- [Gary] Yeah.

[Gary] You're gonna be my...

- [Waz] Yeah, I'll hold it.
- [Gary] Watch my footsteps, all right?

[Waz] Oh, yeah.

- [Gary] Ready. One, two, three.
- One, two, three.

[Gary] Oh! Oh, okay.

- [Waz] Here?
- [Gary] Yeah.

- [Gary] You got a good grip?
- [Waz] Yep, I'm good.

- [Gary] Are you good?
- [Waz] Yep.

[Gary laughs]

Hey, Waz, I got it, dude.

[Waz] All right, pass it down.

All right, that's mine.
See you later, Gary.

- [Gary laughs] Dude.
- [Waz] Yeah.

[Gary grunts] All right.

- Yeah!
- Look at that. Good job, buddy.

Nice. I love it.

- [Waz] This is a big win for us, Gary.
- [Gary] We're doing it, bro.

- [Wes] Well, damn it.
- [Amber] Okay.

[Wes] If we were
fresher this morning,

- we could've been out earlier this morning.
- [Amber] Yeah.

- [Wes] You know.
- [Amber] Exactly.

- Ooh.
- What did Santa bring you?

- [Waz] Two bows.
- So they're like bows for a team.

[Waz] Oh, that is awesome.

- [Gary] Yeah, yeah.
- Those will get the big meals in your belly.

Currency is absolutely
key in competition.

So, knowing you have a
bow as a team to hunt with

and knowing you have
a bow to barter with,

that's the world
we're living in.

[Steven] All right, it's
supposed to be next to a...

- [Sarah] Euphorbia tree.
- Yeah.

[Sarah] Does this look
right according to your map?

[Steven] That looks like a big-ass
euphorbia tree right there, right?

[Sarah] Right there?

Yeah.

- [Sarah] That has a Y branch on it.
- Yeah.

[Sarah] And there's
scuff marks on here

where it's just a little
less shiny from the rain.

I think someone beat us to it.

[Steven groans] That sucks.

Check that one off the list.

Can't win 'em all.
You wanna check out

the, uh, other situation?

[Steven] Advanced
survival tools?

[Sarah] Advanced
survival tools, yeah.

[Steven] Scoot up,

- and take it all the way there.
- All the way over there?

- [Steven] Yep.
- All right.

This map determines what
we're gonna have to survive.

And if we don't get there
first, somebody else will.

So that adds that extra level

of challenge and anxiety.

Because if you don't
have tools in survival...

you really can't survive.

[Stacey] How'd you
determine distance?

There was a scale on
the map, a 500-foot scale.

So I broke it down
by pinky widths.

And it should be

ten feet on the
other side of this tree.

- [Jeff] You doing okay?
- [Stacey] Just tired.

- [Jeff] What's that?
- [Stacey] I don't know.

Look at this.

Oh my gosh, Stacey.

Oh, this is huge.

Oh my God.

We just found a freakin pelt.

Look at this.

- This is amazing.
- Wow.

Guess which two are
sleeping good tonight.

[laughs] Hell yeah.

- Check this out.
- All right, let me in there.

- Yay!
- We got clothes, baby.

This is an oryx hide.

A massive, massive creature.

This is going to be
incredible for warmth,

for shoes,

um, rain-proof
material for our shelter.

I mean, this is the biggest find
I could have hoped for out here.

That's really nice 'cause I've
been freezing my ass off all night.

There's another
survival item up here.

We're already one for one
this morning. Why stop now?

58, 59, 60, 61, 62.

- So any time in the next 20 feet or so.
- Okay.

I see something tied
to that tree right there.

Oh, found it! Found it!

Yes.

[laughs] Baby.

We freaking nailed that.

Heavy, too.

- [bleep]
- Nice.

[laughs]

Yeah.

The fact that we
have nice knives now,

um, right before we start
building shelter today,

it's a huge win.

Even though, yes, we've been
prioritizing searching for items

over building
shelter, it paid off.

Early bird gets the
mother frickin worm.

- Two catches, one morning.
- Yes.

Jeff, he's a smart guy
and he made it happen.

- Two for two.
- Now let's go work on our shelter.

We put in huge effort
to go look for the caches.

And now I'm ready
to go back to camp.

I know it's getting cold.
I want to get back, too.

But we now have a
hide that acts as shelter.

So do we want to potentially
try to find something else?

What do you think?

I mean, we already
found two this morning.

All these are probably
going to be gone today.

I'll go back and
work on the shelter.

Okay.

And if you want to go look
for another item, go for it.

Okay, cool.

It's important that we get all the
resources we can from the environment.

After day 21, we don't know
what this challenge looks like.

- Good luck.
- Thank you.

[Jeff] Every item in mine and
Stacey's possession right now

is going to help us long term.

And I've got the
long-term mind right now.

[Wes] Ooh.

[Amber] That's cold.

[Wes] Yes, ma'am, it is.

[Amber] We were really excited
this morning to go and get the bow.

We should be coming on it.
We went down an elevation.

But there is a second
bow on the map,

so we've decided why
not go towards that bow?

But we're walking out miles
to see if the item still exists.

The risk could be detrimental.

- Oh.
- Oh.

- And I caught myself.
- Good catch, good catch.

It's worth a shot.

I don't want to miss an opportunity
to upgrade our survival tools.

[laughs]

Yeah.

Oh, Jesus.

Sounds like Jeff.

This is what I live for.

Whoo!

Yeah, that's Jeff.

I wonder what they got.

[Jeff] You hear
that, sons of bitches?

That's an obnoxious man.

That's Jeff.

Yeah, baby! That's
what I'm talking about.

Whoo!

Okay.

No fricken way.

Are these more knives?

Are you kidding me?

Stacey and I have more knives
than we have hands at the moment.

[laughs] And that
feels great, baby.

I am clearly above the game
when it comes to this navigation.

And I'm going to continue on.

I'm going to work my way

up here to the
blood trail location.

[Jeff reading]

[Narrator] Pound for pound
the strongest cats in Africa,

leopards drag
their prey into trees,

leaving a trail of blood behind.

Survivalists will need
to use their tracking skills

in order to locate an
impala kill hidden at the end.

I'm going after the blood trail

and I'm going to try
to get us some dinner.

[Jeff] This is what
I live for right now.

He probably found
the other survival item,

which sucks.

We hear Jeff
scream, "I live for this!"

That line.

Well, if they got the
other two survival items,

I just, it would be a waste
of our energy to go, but...

[Wes] With all the screaming
over there, I can only assume.

[Amber] I know him.
He'll rub it in our face

and then be like, I
have three hatchets.

I'd be like, good for you, dude.

I don't trust him as a
human already from Peru.

[Jeff] She treats you
two like her children.

I am so grateful for your
truth and your honesty.

Of course eventually,
she will be put in her place.

And she will realize
that she's not queen bee.

He will never change.
I don't want to see him.

- Jeff, at the very least, is on the warpath.
- Yeah.

[Sarah] We hear Jeff yell that
he found one of the caches.

So we're making a beeline to the next
nearest cache to see what we can find.

What, you want to do this guy?

- Yeah.
- Trail through hunting grounds.

I don't know what
his tracking skills are

but I can guarantee
they're not as good as I am.

Yeah.

[Sarah] I am a very skilled
tracker. That's one of my main fortes.

Now it's game on.

Track a blood trail
through hunting grounds.

So we'll go to this one, now.

You know, I wouldn't doubt
if that's, like, a dead carcass.

Let's go look. Let's find out.

[Gary] Knowing you have a bow
as a team to hunt with, it's so huge.

But we're just
kind of going, like,

let's just go look for everything
and see what that delivers.

Maybe some meat. That
would be, like, icing on the cake.

[Jeff] I hiked in
approximately 400 feet

and this should be the general
location where the blood trail starts.

Not should be, I know this is the general
location where the blood trail starts.

The problem is, it's been raining
non-stop since we got here.

And if there were a blood trail,

it could be gone.

Something has
trampled through here.

I think I'm going to be
able to track this animal

regardless of whether
or not there's a blood trail.

If this animal was
killed by a leopard,

it's going to have been drug off

and there's going to be marks
in the dirt that I can follow.

So that's exactly
what I'm doing now.

I see something there.

I wonder if that was Jeff.

Let's watch him
without saying anything.

Oh my God.

What? What the [bleep]?

Holy [bleep]!

- I feel like this is the area.
- Maybe we keep... -Shh.

- Okay, well...
- Yeah.

I think we should just
go barge in on their party.

- Yeah?
- Yeah. Let's go see what they're up to.

We could hear you
clear across the valley.

- Yeah.
- You've been having some fun this morning.

- You find some cool [bleep]?
- Yeah.

- We found some good stuff, too.
- Yeah.

- Bow and arrow.
- Nice. Okay.

You guys happened
to come upon me

when I'm trying
to find some meat.

The blood trail started back
here approximately 20 yards.

I don't know where the
blood trail is right now.

But there's meat
in this general area.

- He just said there's meat in the general area.
- Yeah.

Start looking.

[Jeff] Tracking a blood
trail is freaken difficult.

Especially through
this environment.

So I'm not expecting it to be more than,
you know, 20 yards off trail or something.

There, right there. There's
an entire impala in this tree.

Whoo!

Yeah!

Whoo!

No way.

Yeah!

No way.

Are you kidding me?

[laughs]

- Good job, babe.
- Oh my God.

[laughing]

There, right there. There's
an entire impala in this tree.

Whoo!

We found the impala right in
the tree. Killed by a leopard.

150 pounds of meat.

Whoo!

Out of all the caches,
this is the biggest score.

And we're the ones that got it.

Let's eat!

[Sarah] Hi, Gary.

[Steven] Got the
whole crew over here.

We start celebrating
and immediately,

the other folks
in close proximity

decide to come in and
see what's going on.

And at that point, we're kind of like,
oh, crap. You know, what do we do?

Well let's get this guy out of here
and get it skinned up and quartered out.

I've done six of these and
it's never been a competition.

It's been about people
working together

to accomplish a common goal.

- Holy cow!
- That's enough for all of us.

So how do we want to do
this? What do you guys think?

[Steven] This is
different, you know?

This is a competition challenge.

We've got to play the game.

So we can all eat.

Do you think it's fair we,
you know, split the meat?

100%.

There's no way we're
going to be able to eat this.

It'll be returned.
It'll be returned.

[Steven] Me and Sarah could
have just taken that whole thing.

But we've all got
to survive out here.

And we've all got to do it together
at this point in this challenge.

It might not be
the best strategy.

It might be my coffin nail.

But we'll see. We'll see.

- Like it was made...
- [laughs]

Yeah, baby.

You didn't make that mark.

I did not make that mark.
That is from a leopard.

Oh, wow, yeah. That's
two punctures, huh?

- Yeah. Upper teeth, lower teeth.
- Wow.

[Sarah] That's a leopard kill.

[Waz] It really does
make you think, you know?

We're not just walking
out here by ourselves.

You don't want to
end up like this guy.

Yeah.

Uh, do we want to quarter it
here and we'll each carry parts?

Do you want me to go back and
get the fire roaring? I'll get firewood.

Yeah. That'd be fantastic.

I thought I'd be butchering an
impala in the rain with you guys.

It's an honor.

[Sarah] My biggest concern
about this competition is my peers

who've had more time out
in the wilderness than I have.

But to find an entire
impala carcass,

I definitely think that I
have a chance to win this.

We should bring some
over to Amber and Wes, too.

If we just split it half half, those
three camps and our three camps.

Yeah, that sounds good.

This is really an awesome
start to this challenge for me.

- Enjoy your dinner.
- All right. Take care, guys.

Look at this.

Africa rich, baby.

[Sarah] You think he's actually going
to give that meat to the other teams?

Yeah.

Holy [bleep].

This always happens
to me. Holy [bleep].

He's been treasure
hunting master.

Oh, technically Steven and
Sarah were the first to come upon it

but we basically found
it at the same time.

Way to go, man.

Cut some of this
off for those guys.

Jeff being diplomatic
is a new thing.

I don't know if this is a
ploy to sabotage others.

Butchering up this impala with
these awesome survival knives.

This is, like, my
best friend right now.

Um, so this'll be
our share, here.

And then I've got a
bunch of steaks here

that I cut off for
both of those groups.

- What do you think?
- Yeah. Pretty even Steven.

- Do you think that's nice?
- Yeah.

I just want to shake this
cold. This is not good.

I could have never done
frozen. I don't know how you did it.

I don't think it was this cold.

What?

This is unpleasant
weather at best.

Actually, it's a little scary.

Been trying to stay alive.

I don't remember
being this cold.

- Oh yeah?
- No.

This is the coldest
I've ever been.

Both Amber and I are shivering.

And we really need to get warm.

We need this for
tonight, for sure.

Hey, guys.

Is this Sarah?

Where you at?

We're over here.

Hi, I'm Amber.

Nice to meet you. I'm Sarah.

Oh my God, look
at all that meat.

Are you guys in the
mood for sharing?

Oh, 100%. We're actually
coming to you for that purpose.

What?

I couldn't believe
what they brought us.

Let me leave this leg
here with you guys.

This is huge,
gamechanger for us.

- See you, guys. Have a good one.
- Thanks, guys.

If we get anything
in the future,

Sarah and Steven will be the
first ones that we share with.

This meat will give us meat
sweats and we'll get warmed up.

Gives you a good attitude
adjustment when it's a rough day.

[Matt] How you doing?

I'm better now than
I was this morning.

I hear voices.

Yeah.

Come up here, we've
got a present for you guys.

What do you think? Should we take a little
jaunt up there and see what's going on?

Yeah.

- Well, howdy, you.
- Hi.

Are you guys in
the mood for steaks?

Well, come on back.

Oh, I'm assuming you must
have done the blood trail.

Yes, sir.

Technically, Steven and
Sarah spotted this impala

but we all decided to
share it amongst all groups.

Wow, that's awesome.

So I'd like to give you
one leg for bone broth

and then...

- Oh, God dang. That's a bunch, buddy.
- Yeah.

Jeff gave out a gift. I
think it's a power move.

Jeff wants to have people on
his side to aid him in his survival,

because he's worried that he doesn't have
the skills to really make it on his own.

Hold on. We've got to
document, Jeff's sharing.

[laughing]

Jeff is sharing.

Document. What is the
day? What is the date?

[laughing]

New challenge,
Matt. New challenge.

Right now, everybody's
working together.

Everybody's sharing
and collaborating.

But this is still
last one standing.

There's going to be one winner
of this entire thing and 11 losers.

So I may be playing nice now,

but I'm not afraid to
play the game, either.

Other team was nice
enough to share with us.

So we've got to figure out
how we're going to preserve this.

Thank you Steven and Sarah.

Primal eating, right
here. Straight off the bone.

- Look at that.
- Yeah.

Oh my gosh.

The broth looks amazing.

Look at all that fat on
top of the water. I love it.

Delicioso.

Day two and we're eating impala.

Between your
skills and that Matt,

we got put right on
the money out there.

- Yeah.
- You know.

We're meat rich

and me and Sarah are not going
to be able to eat an entire impala

in seven days. Everybody's
going to benefit from this.

Karma's real.

Got a meat chandelier.

- [laughs] Meat chandelier.
- It's fricken amazing.

And we stole it from a leopard.

Actually, we are going to
have to be careful tonight.

Sleep with our
heads on a swivel.

[bleep]

Holy [bleep]. Hey! Hey!

- Get!
- Get!

This leopard is pissed.

Holy [bleep].

Hey! Hey! Get! [screams]

- Get! Get!
- Go on, get!

That was a little much.

We'll, uh, keep our ears
open and our eyes peeled

as much as we can while
were sleeping tonight.

And just sleep light.

- African animals are crazy.
- Yeah.

- Oh, gosh.
- It's raining.

- The wind is blowing.
- Temperature keeps dropping.

That was a long night.

It was really cold. Like, I woke
up several times shaking and then

the rain was coming in from
the side, I was like, oh my gosh.

Yeah.

Mmm-hmm.

All I feel is this cold wind.

And then there are
not enough leaves

to create the roof we
need to prevent the rain.

I am not going through
another cold night.

This challenge is a lot
different 'cause we're nomadic.

So setting up our shelter, you don't
want to invest a whole lot of time in it

if you're moving away
from it in just a few days.

There's a bow still
on this challenge

that hasn't been
taken out of a tree, yet.

I've been trying to get
my partner up and running.

But also, I've got to grab that
bow before, obviously, Jeff can.

What's a naked man got to
do if there's an item in a tree?

But this tree,
you can't touch it.

It's highly poisonous.

So I've got to make a
sling ladder with the slope.

Try to make it
around 18 feet long.

It can be done.

Fabricate some
bushcraft, shall we?

Even though we have
these items out here,

you've got to have the
survival skills to get them.

It's going to require making
some cordage, making some poles.

I'm going to try to collect some
materials on the way back down.

So now, all around me is
this mother-in-law's tongue.

Nice long fibers in a plant.

Once they're broken up,
can be made into nice rope.

I need to collect as
much of this as I can,

but to make a structural ladder

is not going to be easy.

I've got to get on the ball.

Jeff is determined to
get every item he can.

And I need a little time
to get some cordage built,

gameplan assembled.

So I holler out to Jeff.

Hey, Jeff!

[Jeff] Yeah?

I just want to let you
know I found the bow.

[Stacey] Awesome.

[Jeff] Yeah, way to go, buddy.

Not a lie. I found it.

I didn't tell him
all the details.

But hey, strategy, right?

I don't want him figuring
out he's got to build a ladder.

That's frustrating.

Definitely going to
grab more firewood.

I might take one of the bows
down to Amber and Wes.

Like, Amber's pretty good
with the bow and arrow.

I think Wes is, too.

- Wes is good?
- Yeah.

- He hunts.
- That's cool.

I think it's a wise investment
to lend our bow and arrows.

If they're out and about today
and they carry it with them,

they might be able
to get some food, so...

If they decide to use it today,

that's more
chances for us to eat.

- I'm cool with it.
- Hopefully they're over there.

[Wes] Hello, friendly neighbors.

Hey, what's going on, Wes?

Good morning.

Look at you. You're
out with the bow.

I'm actually bringing
this to deliver to you guys.

As a bit of a loan for
whatever you want to do with it.

We've got two and we're not...

both not gonna be using
it at the same time, so...

- Helping out would be the way to go.
- [Amber] Waz, you're so...

[Waz] My philosophy in relation to
getting to be that last man standing

is that I'll do everything
that I can to get that money,

but I'm not going to compromise
who I am as a person to do it.

This is, uh, Gary's, so
if ever he wants it back.

[Wes] It's a loaner 'til then.

- And if we precure anything, we will bring it over...
- [Waz] Yeah.

- to your camp.
- [Waz] Perfect, for sure.

- All right, guys.
- [Wes] Thanks.

- [Amber] Thank you so much, Waz.
- Of course.

- [Wes] Thanks.
- Absolutely.

[Amber] Wow, this is
the best present ever.

So I just got us...

- Some cordage?
- a huge amount of cordage.

[Matt] We're gonna
have to make a lot of rope.

- I'm up for it if you are.
- I'm up for it.

[Gwen speaking]

- [Gwen speaking]
- [Matt speaking]

This thing has been
going on for two days now,

and it's getting worse.

[Matt] You feeling the whole
gamut? Headache and everything?

Until something's
vastly wrong...

I don't know what it is
but something's not right.

So I'm gonna get the medics
to come in here and check.

For Gwen to say that
she needs to see a medic,

that's a big deal.

She is one of the toughest
woman I have ever met.

But right now, she's wincing
in pain, she's struggling,

and it's concerning.

[Jarryd speaking]

[Gwen] Not good or
you wouldn't be here.

Head hurts.

My joints ache.

[Jarryd speaking]

As a former paramedic, I know
that that's super dangerous.

Heart attack levels.

So that's kinda scary.

[Matt] High blood
pressure is serious.

- I mean, that's stroke.
- [Gwen] Yeah.

On this challenge, if
Gwen taps now on her own,

we both go.

It's a whole different
ball game here.

[Gwen] Hey, this is just
the hell we live in now.

[Lorraine speaking]

[Gwen] That's not okay.

[Jarryd] In the last 24 hours, Gwen
started with body aches, headaches,

which then progressed
into high blood pressure.

I've never had high
blood pressure in my life.

Never.

[Narrator] Infections, cold
weather, and dehydration

are factors that can elevate
blood pressure levels,

raising the risk of
cardiac arrest or stroke.

But medics are unable
to perform blood tests

in order to
diagnose in the field.

[Jarryd] It could
be from infections,

so double boil water
if you guys get water.

Yeah, you know,
and just take it easy.

We'll come monitoring and see

if we can get the blood pressure a
bit down and the symptoms subside.

Yeah, then I'll see
you guys soon, yeah.

Okay, all right, perfect.

[Matt] I'm definitely worried.

Right now, the best I can do is ensure
that I help Gwen as much as I can.

There's a bow in a
tree calling my name,

but it either doesn't do any
good if you have to leave.

So right now, it's operation
"Get Gwen Better."

Whatever's going
on, we gotta fix it.

[Wes] Gonna take a walk to the
area where we heard that bush buck.

- In case we happen upon something.
- [Amber] Yeah.

This bow really takes
us to the next level.

[distant] Hello?

[Amber speaking]

Hello?

- Is this Jeff?
- [Jeff] Yes?

- Is that Amber?
- Hi, Jeff.

There's Jeff.

I hear his voice, I'm
like, "Oh, my God."

Holy [bleep], I was just
coming to find you guys.

[Amber] Knowing who Jeff is and what
my experience with him personally was,

I don't trust him.

Congratulations.

You have a bow.

- Well, actually, we're borrowing it.
- Right.

'Cause it's Gary's.

- There was two of them in the bundle.
- If they want it back.

- Okay.
- And there it was.

It was like both of us aren't
gonna go hunting at the same time.

So the other tree
has two in there too.

Oh.

Wes and Gary found two bows.

It was a pack of two.

So we now have two
sets of survival knives.

We don't need four knives.

So the smart move
is to trade them away

for a bow.

The trading game
is about to begin.

I want to talk to Gary
since that's his bow.

- And obviously just offer up a trade.
- Yep.

Gary, would you like two
knives for you and your partner

in exchange for the bow?

[Amber] Jeff immediately
went to "I should go find Gary

and do a barter with
him and get that bow."

Points right at the bow
that Waz just gave us.

Okay.

Unbelievable.

Clearly, he has not changed.

[Jeff] Waz, Gary.

- Yeah, man.
- Yeah, buddy?

[Waz] Come to steal our [bleep]?

[Jeff] Came to talk business.

- [Waz] Okay.
- [Gary] Okay.

[Waz] That's Jeff.

I'm not really in the
Jeff mood right now,

but I invite him
in, we have a chat.

- I heard you guys found two bows.
- [Waz] Mmm-hmm.

We have an
additional set of knives.

The rational thought was there.

[Waz] What, you
want one of the bows?

My issue with what
you're saying right now

if you've got three knives,
[bleep] hand some knives out.

We had an extra bow, so we
just gave it to them down there.

Okay, no, I see where
you're coming from.

[Waz] I get it, like you want
something in return for that.

What you're gonna
get in return for that

is a bunch of people that
are sharing everything.

So, no, I don't want
your [bleep] knife.

Like... 'Cause
that's not who I am.

If there's a way that he can get an
advantage, he's gonna get an advantage.

And I don't hold it against him,
it's the type of person that he is.

I just don't want to be that type
of person so I choose not to be.

I understand what
you're saying, Waz,

and it's very admirable.

I'm looking at
the item situation

through a competitive lens.

I view these items as currency.

And I believe that these items
should be on the trading block.

- Okay.
- I just want to keep them for trading purposes.

- [Waz] I understand that.
- Okay.

I mean, think about it. If
we go with Waz's strategy,

there's no incentive on even
going out and finding these items first

if you know that you can just
borrow one from all your competitors.

So when they have to
chop down a ton of trees,

with that crappy machete, they'll be
begging at our feet to make a trade.

- All right, fellas.
- All right, buddy.

[Gary] See you, Jeff.

- [Gary] Take care.
- [Jeff] Thanks a lot.

[Waz] I'm happy to do the
challenge without one of Jeff's knives.

- And then [bleep] Jeff 'cause I'm done with that [bleep].
- [Gary laughs]

[Waz] You're done.

I like you as long as
you can't [bleep] me over.

Not what I want
to be doing all day.

I need to collect more firewood.

And Jeff is off adventuring.

Sucky situation right now.

- [Jeff] Hey there, partner.
- [Stacey] Hey, you're back.

And guess what?

The bows were
found in a set of two.

Oh, so there's four?

- So there's a total of four.
- Uh-huh.

Matt said he found his bow.

So Matt has two bows.

No need to have two.

- So I'm thinking, we see if they'd like to trade.
- Mmm-hmm.

[Stacey] That's a good idea.

How you feeling?

[Gwen speaking]

[Matt] Nothing makes
a person feel better

than good old-fashioned broth.

Gwen is not doing good.

I do not want anything
bad to happen to her.

but also if Gwen
taps now on her own,

then she's taking me with her.

And that is horrifying.

I got bone marrow in there.

That's the good stuff.
That's like medicine.

My job's to make sure that
Gwen's strong as possible.

[Gwen] Matt's
magical bone broth.

That's what we're doing.

[Matt] There's some
fats, a lot of minerals.

And out here, we're
losing a lot, so...

Super handy.

Magic.

[Jeff calling]

- [Gwen] We're over here.
- [Matt] We're here.

[Jeff] You down there?

[Gwen] Keep coming.

Down this way.

- [Jeff] Yip, yip.
- [Gwen] Jeff approaches.

Doesn't know that
we don't have the bow.

So, shhh.

- Good to see you guys.
- Good to see you too.

Are we the only ones that
have made it to your camp?

- [Mike] No one's visited yet.
- [Gwen] You are our first visitors.

- You're our first visitors.
- Oh, my gosh.

- Nice to see you, buddy.
- Thanks.

[Jeff] Matt and I, we've been
competing head to head for years.

If we can work together now,

it only benefits both of us.

So, um, I heard you
got a couple bows.

Yeah.

- That I have a couple bows?
- Yeah.

- Yeah. Uh-huh.
- That there are a couple bows.

And it just so happens, we
have a couple set of knives.

- Each.
- Oh. I got...

- So you got four knives?
- Yes.

So we were thinking
about a straight trade.

Two knives for one extra bow.

Jeff is wanting to
trade for these bows

that we don't have.

- That's what they look like, that's the bigger one.
- Bigger one and smaller one?

- And then...
- I'm a trained hostage negotiator.

I've learned how to
read people very well.

I see Matt's face.
Matt's like, "Oh, crap."

And in that split second, I
know I have to divert Jeff.

So initiate bluff strategy 101.

How about we
talk it over tonight,

- make our game plan and then we'll come see you tomorrow?
- Yeah.

I think that sounds good.

All right, well, yous
have a good night.

- [Stacey] See you in the morning.
- See you.

[Matt] Jeff, he didn't
even look for the bows.

And that's a big break because
any time we can have right now

to get this bow out of
the tree is time we need.

[Gary speaking]

[Waz speaking]

[Gary speaking]

It's not raining like it
did the last two nights,

but no cloud cover,
and the stars...

There's a bit of
chill in the air.

[Dan grunts]

[Cheeny] Yeah, it's cold.

It's brutally cold.

It's gotta be colder
tonight than any other night.

It's the type of cold that
could take someone like Wes

or someone with
lesser body fat out

in a second without
a proper shelter.

[Amber speaking]

[Gwen speaking]

[Matt yawns]

[Gwen speaking]

These are items!

- Oh, [bleep].
- [Narrator] For this competition,

the PSR, or primitive
survival rating,

weighs an individual's survival
skills and items collected

to determine the likelihood of
becoming the last one standing.

- Yay!
- We got clothes, baby.

- [Narrator] Intent on finding caches...
- This is what I live for!

[Narrator] ...Jeff
navigated his way

to three of the
advanced survival items.

- Africa rich, baby!
- [Narrator] The stockpile of assets

raises his PSR from 9.4 to 9.6.

- [Gwen] Here's a pot in here.
- [Matt] Nice.

[Narrator] Gwen has failed to
find her footing in the competition.

It hurts, joints ache.

[Narrator] And her fading
health puts her challenge at risk.

[Lorraine speaking]

[Narrator] As a
result, her PSR drops

from 8.2 to 7.9.

Oh!

[Narrator] Focusing
on survival assets first,

Amber was a step behind
in retrieving the bows.

[Wes] God damn it.

[Narrator] The combination
of being empty-handed

and struggling with the elements

decreases her
PSR from 9.2 to 8.9.

I just want to shake this cold.

This is not good.

[Narrator] to see all the
survivalist PSR ratings,

[Jeff] That was a rough night. I'm
sure there were a lot of suffering people.

And we found this hide.

- It's like our waterproof...
- Mmm-hmm.

all-natural African bedding.

- It's a luxury, for sure.
- Mmm-hmm.

[Steven speaking]

[Sarah speaking]

[Wes] It's morning, day four.

Uh, really tough night.

Really tough night.

Amber is really
hurting on this one.

I am really struggling.

I did not expect
Africa to be this cold.

I'm having trouble
talk... talking,

and just can't stop...

[stammering] Shaking.

[Narrator] Shivering and slurred
speech are signs of hypothermia

which can affect heart and
nervous system functions.

I don't even think I got
this cold in Louisiana.

Hey, camp to medic.

Uh, Amber is shivering, she
really can't stop, she feels cold.

[Matt] It was a long night,

and very cold.

But the most concerning
part about it is,

Gwen over here,
she's struggling.

[Gwen] Yesterday, my
blood pressure was super high

like 160 over 100.

I know those are stroke levels.

I definitely don't want
that to happen out here.

- [Rudi] Morning.
- Hey, yeah, morning.

Amber cannot stop shivering.

She even feels cold.

[Rudi] Well, let me measure
your temperature quickly.

- Lift you arm, like that.
- [Amber] Okay.

Uh.

[Amber sniffles]

Okay, so your temperature is 34.

[Amber laughs]

[Wes] 93 something?

That's dangerous.

[Rudi] In a normal situation,

I can warm you up, but
that's your core temperature,

so I'm gonna have to tap you.

Okay.

So she's tapped out?

Don't warm her up or anything?

[Rudi] That's a
core temperature.

It's not a surface temperature
so I'm gonna have to tap her.

- [Wes] All right.
- [Rudi] All right.

I'm sorry, Wes.

It's okay.

They can't help that.

You know.

There's no choice.

[Wes] I mean when a
challenge like this will take out

somebody like Amber
whose done 60 days...

This is horrible.

[Wes] ...I mean, that
shows you the level

of just misery that's
going on around here.

[Rudi speaking]

[Wes] Amber's
getting med tapped.

And that's a lot different
from a voluntary tap out.

A voluntary tap out from Amber
would've meant that I go home too.

And so there's a
huge difference there.

A med tap means that I can stay.

- [Amber speaking]
- All right, sweetie.

No, no, no. Stop being sorry.

I don't want to
hear that anymore.

Okay? Just go get
yourself taken care of.

[crying] You're going
to do great on your...

[Wes] All right,
you get out of here.

- You got get somewhere warm.
- [laughs]

[Amber] I feel absolutely
horrible right now

that I have to leave
my partner, Wes,

because I know it's
gonna be hard on him.

But he is such a strong
survivalist and he's a bad ass.

A sad story having to
leave this competition.

Coming out here, I thought I
had the skills, the knowledge

being prepared for this challenge,
but the weather took me out.

I did not expect that.

- [Jarryd] Morning, guys.
- [Gwen] Morning, morning.

- [Matt] Morning.
- [Jarryd] Morning.

- How are you today?
- [Gwen] I don't know.

Chest stills hurts and
just not feeling well.

- [Jarryd] Just not feeling well, hey? Okay.
- [Gwen] Nah

We're gonna read you your blood
pressure like we mentioned yesterday.

- [Gwen] All right.
- I mean, we don't want to play games out here.

[Lorraine speaking]

- [Lorraine speaking] -[Jarryd]
- Still high. Okay, so that's...

Way too high. Your blood
pressure's fluctuating way too much.

[Matt] High blood
pressure is serious.

[Gwen] Yeah.

Unfortunately, Gwen, we're
gonna have to medically tap you.

Blood pressure's the issue.
Could be a multitude of things.

So we need to pull
Gwen from the challenge

for specialist consultation.

It's gonna put you at a
risk of all heart issues

and all of those
types of things.

[Gwen] I'm in total
agreeance with you there.

- I'm not willing to risk any more of this.
- [Jarryd] To risk any of this.

I was a firefighter, a
paramedic, and a police officer.

I've seen many people with
strokes and heart attacks

and it's extremely scary.

- Sorry, bud.
- Hey, you know what?

I hate to see you go, but...

You're tough.

Mentally, I'm still
here, I want to be here.

But my body's like,
"Nah, sorry. You're done."

Now go kick Jeff's ass.

[Gwen laughs]

Matt's a super capable
survivalist, even on his own.

I think Matt's very capable
of being the last one standing.

[Narrator] After only
four days in South Africa,

two survivalists
succumb to the challenge.

[Wes] So here I am alone.

Being down to a team of one
is going to have a huge impact.

My challenge just
got infinitely harder.

[Narrator] Now
with 10 remaining,

which one will
have what it takes.

[Matt] Here I am, solo.

There's a savage side
of me that thrives alone.

I have to try to do
what's never been done.

To see the invisible,
do the impossible,

and be that last one standing.
