Naked and Afraid (2013–…): Season 15, Episode 8 - Opposites Don't Attract - full transcript
[nathan] holy moly.
That's the mother lode up there.
Oh, my god.
[molly] you're gonna climb?
Yeah. I'm just gonna climb it.
Go big or go home.
That's what I always say.
[tense music playing]
[nathan grunts]
Oh, my god.
I dropped my machete.
Ouch.
[molly] be careful.
[bleep].
[nathan shouts]
Ouch. Ouch.
[birds chirping]
[nathan] here we go.
Yeah!
I'm in the middle of nowhere.
I have nothing but ocean
And open coastline around me.
I can see that there are
a lot of coconut trees,
Some bamboo,
and a thick carpet of jungle
This is a pretty lush
environment.
I've never been
to colombia before.
The humidity with the heat
is tough.
This environment
is very different
From the high desert
And mountainous region
of utah where I live,
But overall it's gonna be
an incredible experience.
[groans]
[narrator] off the caribbea
coast of northern colombia
Lies the san salvador river
basin.
The dense tropical terrain
Combines four distinct
landscapes,
Beaches, mangroves,
Rivers, and jungle.
With midday temperatures
Reaching into the 90s,
The thick vegetation
and swampy waters
Provide cover
For some of south america's
deadliest wildlife.
Jaguars prowl the jungle,
Taking down prey
with their stealth and spee
Which can reach up
to 50 miles per hour.
While 12-foot caiman
Can lurk beneath
the murky river water
For more than an hour,
Waiting to drown their victims
Before they eat them.
A lot of people are survivalists
With a beer in their hand,
But this is the real thing.
I guess this is it.
Being naked for me
is not a problem.
As anyone who has ever lived
with me knows,
I walk around naked a lot,
So I'm not gonna have
any problem with it.
[molly] hey, I'm comfortabl
being naked
In front of a stranger.
It also helps that that stranger
Is also going to be naked.
[chuckles]
I'm going to meet my partner.
I'm hoping that
they're as excited to meet me
As I am to meet them,
And that we get rolling here.
[clicks tongue] do I have
anything in my teeth?
I am pretty nervous.
I hope that she is cool
and helpful
And we'll get along just fine.
I don't really believe
In conforming to traditional
gender rules.
When it comes to survival tasks,
I think both parties pulling
equal weight in whatever way
Is the best combination.
And, hopefully, that's
something that we'd agree on
Hey, yo.
What's up?
I'm nathan.
Nathan. I'm molly.
- Nice to meet you, molly.
- Oh, bring it in.
- Bring it in.
- [laughter]
Well...
How are you feeling about this?
I'm a little bit awkward.
- I just...
- Yeah.
I'm trying to maintain
eye contact.
Yeah. [laughs]
I'm excited to see
what your skillset is.
I'm an outdoor educator
and wilderness guide.
The outdoors is my happy place.
I've experienced
as an outdoor educator
Teaching wilderness surviva
And wilderness trekking skills.
Then went on to become
a wilderness first responder
Over the last couple years,
I've gotten more into
primitive survival
As a way to be
better prepared going out
On adventures.
I'm excited to test my skill
Under different circumstance
than I'm used to.
With this challenge,
I'm trying to prove to myself
That I can handle
whatever comes at me
And be able to take it on
with grace and succeed.
[narrator]
molly's wilderness emt skill
Will be an asset in the jungle,
But her lack of experience
in a tropical climate
Could make it difficult for her.
She starts with
a primitive survival rating
Or psr, of 6.7.
I'm a great fire starter,
Shelter builder, forging.
Okay.
- Yeah.
- I...
Mostly hunting,
shelter-building.
I've been practicing
primitive survival
Since I was about
five years old.
My brother and I would go
deep into the woods
And build shelters
And pretend that
we're living off of the land
Now, I raise my own land,
Chickens and grow all of my
vegetables and fruit
At my homestead.
Oh, look at this.
I consider myself
more of a lone wolf
Than a team player.
I know that I would have
no problem making it 21 day
Without my partner.
I'm always looking
for an opportunity
To push myself further
Than anyone else will go,
And this is the perfect
opportunity for me to do that.
[narrator]
nathan is comfortable
Living off the land
But his lone wolf mentality
Could make working
with a partner difficult.
He starts with a psr of 6.9
Feels like this is the start
of a good partnership.
I think so.
Let's get through these
21 days 'cause I ain't...
- I'm not tapping if you don't.
- All right.
- No tap pact.
- No tap pact.
Okay. Good. [laughs]
Awesome.
I can see our stuff over here.
Let's check out what we got.
[narrator] molly and nathan
have each brought
A survival item.
I have my awesome machete.
Nice.
I got my fire starter.
I have the same one.
- Do you really?
- Yeah.
- That's awesome.
- [laughter]
[narrator] and been given
a pot to boil water.
I've got the map in here
as well.
So here,
we are at our meet point.
Looks like we've got
a water source right here.
Yup. So that'll be camp.
Some dangers,
Fer-de-lance, caiman,
Corral snakes, and jaguars.
I'm gonna try to hunt
some caimans though.
- Amazing.
- I'm gonna be...
I'm gonna be exploring
some of the...
Some of the danger zones.
[chuckles]
Cool. I love it.
It looks like it's pretty
dense through here.
- Yeah.
- So let's see if we can walk
Along the beach
and then cut in, yup.
Cool. All right.
- All right.
- Shall we?
- Yeah. Let's.
- Let's go.
Just met my partner molly.
She seems super cool.
I think that her fire skills
From her survival
wilderness teaching
Will probably come in
pretty handy.
And I know that she'll be able
to tend fire
And keep everything going
while I go out and explore.
I'm pretty excited.
Seems like a good fit.
And I couldn't have asked
for anything better.
[tense music playing]
[nathan]
look at all this vine.
[molly]
I know. Such good cordage.
[nathan] I know how to make
cordage out of bamboo as well.
[molly] oh, excellent.
[nathan] looks like
we got some coconuts here.
Let's collect them
'cause we don't know
When we're gonna get water
going tonight.
We might not start a fire so...
That's a good point.
Already feeling good
about this partnership.
I think we're gonna balance
each other really well.
I think his hunting skills
will be awesome.
Nice, nathan.
And he's got this
super technique
For getting coconuts down
From higher palm trees.
Excellent.
Whew.
Nice work
grabbing those coconuts.
- Grab some cordage?
- Yeah. I grab some cordage,
- Some vines.
- They'll come in handy.
Well, this is gonna be nice.
At least, we'll have something
to drink tonight.
- Totally.
- Mwah.
Well, let's continue on.
This is a good start.
[waves crashes]
[nathan] we should be careful
with the rocks
And the current.
[molly] it does look like
we lose the beach to walk on.
- So we'll take a...
- Yeah, so we might need.
- More rugged...
- To cut in over here.
- All right.
- Looks like we climb up here.
Scramble up here.
We gotta head into the jungle.
We can find some water
up there for sure.
- Yeah. Definitely.
- Fresh water.
[tense music playing]
[nathan] keep an eye out
for snakes.
This is snake city right here.
[molly] yeah.
Big hiding spots.
[nathan] oh, look at that.
Snake skin.
Let's see.
Uh, looks like a snake belly.
Yeah.
Sort of looks like the sign
of a fer-de-lance.
Oh.
[narrator] the fer-de-lance
is the deadliest snake
In south america,
Killing more humans
than any other reptile.
With their oversized fangs,
They can inject 16 times
the lethal dose
Of hemotoxic venom,
Which attacks red blood cells,
Causing muscle
and skin tissue to die.
[nathan] necrosis is not good.
- [molly] no.
- Hemotoxic venom...
Melts away your muscles.
[tense music playing]
[monkey grunts]
[nathan] it is hot.
[molly] sweltering.
It sure feels like
we've been walking a while.
[nathan]
weighted down with coconuts
Exhausted from this
multi-mile hike,
Sweat is just dripping
down my body.
Damn, I'm getting torched.
The only thing I can think about
Is finding a permanent camp spot
And starting to figure out
the fire
And the water situation.
Oh, yeah. Look at that.
We got water.
[molly] we got the river.
[nathan] we got the river.
[molly] awesome.
[nathan] this looks like
caiman country.
[molly] yeah, it does.
Around dark,
caiman will probably
Be active in this area.
- Awesome.
- We'll have to come back.
Yeah.
[nathan] I think
this is the water source.
[molly]
yeah. I think you're right.
We'll probably wanna make camp
A little ways from here.
Yeah, 'cause it could rise up
if rains come
And torrential downpour.
Let's explore around here
and see...
Yeah. Yeah. Let's try
to find an open...
More open space.
Okay. Let's keep going.
[molly] okay.
[tense music playing]
[nathan] ooh, look at that.
That's a freshly-burrowed
little mud hole.
[molly] yeah.
[nathan] I wonder
what makes these holes,
- Little rodents?
- [molly] I'm thinking crabs,
Honestly.
[nathan] wow, that'd be
a nice-size crab.
[molly] yeah.
[narrator] blue land crabs
burrow underground
And eat leaves and fruit
that they collect
Next to their holes.
The male's defining feature
is his dimorphic claw,
Which can grow to nearly
twice the size of the other
[molly] whoa.
- It's a crazy...
- Oh, that's clay, look.
[molly] yeah, this is clay.
[nathan] oh, we could
potentially use this
To cover our bodies
from mosquitoes.
[molly] hell, yeah.
- Woo.
- A little spa day.
- Oh... [laughs] yeah.
- Spa day.
Let's go.
[chuckles]
I'm pulling this out of my skin,
All the toxins.
Smells a little rank.
[molly chuckles]
[chuckles]
Now that it's all over my body?
[chuckles]
[tense music playing]
[nathan] oh, this looks
pretty open.
[molly]
yeah, this looks great.
This definitely feels
a safer distance away...
- Yeah, from the water.
- From the water.
So maybe this is our spot.
- And it's already flat.
- Yeah.
Tonight I'll try to make
hammocks out of bamboo
And we could hang in the trees
And then really get down
On a serious structure tomorrow.
- Tomorrow? Yeah.
- [nathan] and let...
I think that today
we should focus
On fire and sterilize water.
Sterilize water. Yeah.
We've got to get a fire built
And some type of shelter out.
So I think
this is a good way to go.
It's like our spot.
Looks like home.
A home sweet home.
[chuckles]
[thuds]
Now, that's some thick bamboo.
Our insertion hike took so long
That we don't have many hour
of daylight left,
So I decide that I'm going
to fashion a hammock
Out of bamboo.
And we brought some cordage
from the beach
And my thought is that
we could suspend the bamboo
Between two trees
and hopefully be raised
From the ground
for our sleep tonight.
Wow, good job
with all the firewood.
Yeah, did a... Did a haul.
- Big haul.
- Nice.
So, what's the best way
for us to get this done?
I think that the hammock
making is a one-man job
Because you have to have
blade, so...
[molly] right, you have...
To be able to cut it.
All right. I will...
Oh, you know what,
stripping the leaves off
Of the cordage
and then roping it up
So it's super tidy
and ready to be used.
Mmm-hmm.
Essentially, what I'm gonna do
Is making incisions right here
And all the way down
Eight times and it will spread
Into a hammock.
[pounding]
All right.
I need to be gentle now.
This is the rough frame
of the hammock.
- Dope.
- That should work.
And then we'll tie cordage
on the...
Each side and put it
between two trees,
And this will be the body
of it right here.
[screeching]
[nathan] this might work.
Yeah.
This might just work.
[molly chuckles]
- [nathan] let me try to...
- Should we test it?
[nathan]
yeah, let me try to test it.
Okay.
Here goes nothing.
It's awfully high for comfort.
- [chuckles]
- yeah.
[chuckles] no.
- [nathan chuckles]
- shoot.
[nathan] um...
If this hammock plan
doesn't work,
We can definitely throw together
A debris shelter.
There's a lot of stuff around.
Are you talking about
making a little, like...
- Yeah.
- Yeah, I mean,
That would work. It...
Just for coverage for tonight...
[nathan] yeah. Mmm-hmm.
If it didn't pan out.
Let's use the rest
of our cordage
To try to reinforce this one
since it's already made.
We're, like, 10 minutes away
from this being done
If we just use all the rest
of the cordage on it.
And then at least
one of us has some...
And then I can just,
like, honestly, like,
Right here will be fine for me.
- Are you sure?
- For the night, yes.
- Okay.
- 100%.
If you wanna start
making the fire,
- I could finish doing the...
- Okay.
So let's just try that.
Bamboo hammocks,
It is a really cool idea.
But it might have been bette
To focus on a more permanent
structure.
But we have to just go with that
Because we're running out
of daylight,
We need to get the fire goin
To boil our water
And ward off potential
predators.
Okay. Here we go.
Yeah, that stick lit.
Keep putting little sticks
on it.
As long as them sticks light
we're in business.
Ooh, look at that.
Make it roar.
[molly] dragon breath.
[nathan] I am beyond gratefu
To have a fire on day one.
We're gonna crack some coconuts,
Drink some water,
finish the hammock,
And try to catch some z's
And hit it hard tomorrow.
I'm trying to get
a lot done tomorrow.
We are about to crack open
our first two coconuts.
- Celebratory coconuts.
- Coconut.
[laughs] thank you,
coconut tree.
- Thank you nathan...
- Woo-hoo!
For being a coconut tree
climber.
A palm tree climber.
Monkey man.
Monkey man. [laughs]
We'll definitely
need to figure out
A better shelter situation
tomorrow.
We're in a tropical environment
Where it's sure to rain.
But I'm feeling
really good about, um,
Our situation thus far.
- Cheers.
- Cheers. [laughs]
[tense music playing]
[nathan]
this is the bamboo hammock.
Okay.
Sitting on it.
- [nathan] it seems sturdy.
- Opening it.
Seems pretty sturdy.
- [nathan laughs]
- honestly.
Okay.
So now the part...
[nathan] oh, I could spread it
so you could get on it easier.
Yes.
[molly grunts softly]
- Feet up here.
- [nathan] yeah.
[molly] ooh, okay.
Hopefully you're not gonna
spike your back.
Not too bad.
- [molly screams]
- oh.
[nathan]
this is the bamboo hammock.
Not too bad.
- Oh.
- [molly screams]
- Oh, no.
- [laughter]
- [nathan] are you okay?
- Wait, wait. It looks like
It just slid out.
Shoot.
I know.
Might just have to...
- Roughneck it?
- Cowboy camp it.
Oh, my god.
[laughter]
So much for the hammock idea.
I know. [laughs]
[leopard snarls]
What is that?
[tense music playing]
[molly] I'm just starting
to hear some sounds
Over in the brush over there.
[molly speaking]
[leopard snarls]
[molly speaking]
Well, night one...
Really not getting any sleep.
[laughs]
- All night.
- It's a long night.
Keep hearing something
in the bushes over there.
And we're sleeping
on the ground,
Tending fire.
Oh, there it is again.
[foreboding music playing]
I have the machete ready
for action,
Just in case...
Just in case.
[nathan] ready for whatever
comes our way.
And sleep ain't it.
No, I don't think sleep
is coming in till tomorrow.
Hopefully. [laughs]
[suspenseful music playing]
[birds chirping]
[insect buzzing]
This water honestly tastes
surprisingly good.
When you're this dehydrated
water gets you high.
- [molly] mmm-hmm.
- It feels so good.
Despite being exhausted,
We have some pretty high
energy plans for today.
We have to make a shelter
Because we both slept
on the ground
And it was not ideal.
So we're going
to be making a, uh,
Elevated platform using y,
Um, sticks that we pound
into the ground
As the support.
Hello.
Woo.
- Living dangerously.
- [molly] yeah.
And then bamboo shoots
and then bamboo this way.
And, uh, we'll see how it goes.
It's gonna take a lot of energy
Because the bamboo is massive.
That is a solid... Solid peg.
[molly] that's a solid y.
[nathan] that is not going
to break apart.
[tense music playing]
[nathan] we can use the
crab holes to our advantage
Instead of digging,
we can just do this.
[pounding]
Just going down the crab hole.
There we go.
So I built a, uh,
large fence on my homestead
That covers...
That surrounds an acre,
And what you do instead
of packing it as you go
You drive it in
as far as possible
And then you put rocks
on the inside next to it.
And then you put dirt
because it creates
A really secure like connection.
[molly] cool.
So this is as far in
as its going?
For sure.
I'll give it a whack.
[tongue clicks] shoot.
Splitting.
Would you mind
reinforce all of this
By that split with, um,
With the cordage that we have?
Sure.
That's pretty, pretty easy.
The crabs did most
of the work for us.
[tense music playing]
[birds chirping]
Oh. My hands are getting
tired of this choppin'
I tell you what...
Tag out.
Wanna bevel this?
Yup.
[nathan]
once we get this peg in
We get to have our coconuts.
Wew!
[nathan] would you mind
doing it on a raised thing
Because the tip is just
eating dirt and dulls it.
Oh, yeah.
And we have...
I'm just super, super,
super, super, like...
- Because this is rolling off?
- I want my blade to be sharp
If I jump on top of a caiman
And then the tip is not sharp.
It's not gonna pierce its skull
And I'm gonna have a real,
Real disaster on my hands.
[molly] I feel like
this is rolling,
I can cut my finger off.
[nathan] here I can do it.
No, no, no, I'm good.
[nathan] just like I said
I'm gonna take over
If it keeps hitting the dirt
Because I can't stress enough
how important it is
To keep the tip
from being dulled.
I am extremely particular
About the order
in which I do things
And the manner
in which I do things
Because I try to be
as scientific, and unbiased,
And unemotional about the things
That I'm doing as possible.
[sighs]
If I know better I know better,
If they know better,
then they know better.
And if they can show me that
Then I will accept it.
But if they can't,
Then it's going to be my way.
Let's go cut down some bamboo.
Perfect.
You can actually tend
the fire and the water
For the first half
And then when I do some I can...
And then get tired
I'll come back and...
- Okay. Trade up?
- [nathan] we'll switch.
Cool.
Nathan has a lot of opinions
About how things need to go
Based on his experience
on his homestead,
Having worked
in the outdoor industry
I'm definitely no stranger
to mansplaining,
But it's getting
a little irksome.
His need to strong arm
the situation,
[grunts]
[molly] teamwork
makes the dream work
And I feel like we could
accelerate the process
A bit better
if we were on the same page.
Yow.
Sub. Time out.
Um, wait until I get
a couple more
- And then can you chop 'em?
- Yes.
Just after this next pot boils.
Yeah. So it's on
and the fire's stoked.
And I need to do something
other than that.
What's that?
So I've pretty much been
tending to the fire
And you've been
over exerting yourself.
- I'm not overexerting myself.
- [molly] and I wanna...
- Talk about...
- We have a time...
Team work is the dream work.
I know. I know.
And...
[nathan]
and that's why you can...
- We should communicate and...
- [nathan] listen.
That's why I'm communicating
to you...
Divide our labor better.
This is why I'm communicating
to you right now.
I need to get two more of these
And you can chop it up,
It's gonna be 20 more minutes.
So I'm just going
to let you know that
And that's how it is, okay?
[molly] your way
or the highway, okay.
I didn't come here
to just keep the fire going,
It's not all of the skills
that I have
And it's starting
to get pretty frustrating.
[tense music playing]
[nathan grunts]
Oh, [bleep].
[bleep].
[bleep] giant thorns.
[grunts]
I do extremely dangerous
And challenging activities
on a daily basis
And if someone wants
to come along
I am the captain
and they are the first mate
And there's no other way
to do it
Because until someone
can prove to me
That they can do the task
that I'm attempting
In a more efficient way
I'm not going to allow them
to do it before me.
Honestly...
This is my second
to last one I've done
All the work already.
If she wants to help
she can chop
20 minutes isn't gonna kill her.
It would take her
a couple hours to do this.
[sighs]
[tense music playing]
Thank you for waiting
30 minutes.
Here are the, uh...
It's the measuring stick
and the machete tapped in.
Okay.
Take a load off.
Yes, indeed.
[tense music playing]
[pounding]
I definitely feel like natha
Is trying to dominate
the situation.
I also think he has
a personality type
That cannot deviate
from what his vision is.
I'm not gonna sit out there
And argue with him
And expend energy in that way.
I'm not trying to create
a rift this early,
But I'm not feeling like
I've got a true team player,
Um, and a partner right now.
[bleep].
[molly] oh, wow,
that really cut, huh?
That was the bamboo.
I'm chopping bamboo,
Of course, I'm being extra
careful with a machete
For safety purposes
but also, uh,
So as not to dull the blade.
And the bamboo on one
As I pull it away slices my toe.
And so now,
I've got an open wound
On the bottom of my foot.
Probably the worst place
For what we're doing out here.
Hey, is there any
of that water left?
- There is.
- [molly] okay.
I'm about to fill up another.
I'm actually just
gonna use a little
To clean out my toe,
That, uh, a piece of bamboo
- Cut my toe.
- Oh.
So I need to irrigate that out.
I'm gonna go fill this up
and get more water.
[molly] okay.
[nathan] let me know
if you need anything.
[molly] okay. Thanks.
Dang.
Blood trail.
I really hope
that doesn't get infected.
This is literally why
I wanted to do it.
Oh my god, are you kidding me?
Oh.
[tense music playing]
[molly] I've done some
primitive wrapping of wounds
Before definitely my training
As a wilderness first responder
Where you're taught
to improvise what you have
On you and what's around yo
in the field.
To make splints
out of bark or sticks,
To keep things clean
and properly dressed,
And avoid infection
at all costs.
Feels pretty good...
For now.
[tense music playing]
Is the toe okay?
Um, it's a pretty
deep cut, but...
- Ooh.
- I was able to irrigate it
And wrap it.
So it's feeling good right now.
I'm glad to hear that.
[molly] shall we start
laying these across?
[nathan] I think so, yeah.
Would you do that
super secure tie that you do?
Yes.
[molly] it hasn't been grea
working together today,
But I think we've kind of
leveled out
To a point where we're able
to get this piece done.
So I guess we'll do
the big ones on that side,
And then move
to the smaller ones as we go,
So it stays regular
instead of being bumpy.
Yeah, that makes sense.
I still want to work
together with nathan.
I think if we can move
through this,
We can still have
a very successful partnership
And a very successful challenge.
But I definitely need us
to get on the same page.
[nathan] would you like
your last coconut?
I'm about to crack mine.
Sure. Thank you.
I think more coconuts tomorrow
Is a pretty big priority
Because if we could get, like,
Five to ten more, I think that,
That would be a life changer...
- Yeah.
- Right now.
[molly] calories, hydration,
electrolytes.
And then we can bring back
all the big ones
And probably try to ration
ourselves to one each a day.
Yeah. I think so.
Well, looks like we're going
to the beach tomorrow.
- Beach day.
- Beach day!
[tense music playing]
[molly] the end of day two.
Check out our cool
new enclosure tonight,
- So we can hopefully get...
- Yeah. We got...
We're gonna get
12 hours of sleep.
We're stylin'.
Yeah. We're getting
12 hours of sleep tonight.
We've been pretty productive
And we need to just chill out.
All right. Big plans,
But big sleeps tonight.
- Buenas noches.
- Buenas noches.
[tense music playing]
Oh [bleep].
[foreboding music playing]
- [molly] whoa!
- Well, it's a little tiny
- Bit of protein.
- [molly] we got a meal.
It's not a lot,
but it's not nothing.
[molly] hey, it's something.
Not a bad start to the morning.
[molly] not at all.
Even though its legs
are eating me.
After our little blowup
yesterday,
Molly and I have been
getting along really well.
My strategy
for conflict resolution
Might not be the healthiest
But I'm just pretending
it didn't happen
And I'm trying to just
focus on the biggest,
Most dire problems,
which are calories, shelter.
That's all I really care about,
And I think that
she also cares about that.
So here's a very small,
But not inconsequential meal
of frog legs.
[molly] nice. Getting
a little bit of protein
Will help us through
today's excursion.
It might seem crazy to go back
To the original insertion beach,
But I know that
there were more resources
Than I could carry originally,
So we hope to come back
with a bounty of fruits
And useful materials.
Oh, that's really good,
it tastes like chicken.
Mmm-hmm.
[nathan] that was a good gram
or two of protein.
Mmm-hmm.
Now, that breakfast
is all wrapped up...
[molly] mmm-hmm.
Time for a pilgrimage of sorts.
Yeah, back to the beginning.
Our humble beginnings.
[tense music playing]
[nathan] slow and steady.
Yeah.
I'm a little bit anxious
About the hike
to the beach today
Because we probably
should be working
On getting a roof
on our shelter,
But hopefully,
We can collect some resources
That will help fuel us
for the next several days,
So that we can focus
and prioritize the shelter.
[tense music playing]
[nathan] that just sounded
like a caiman
Moving in the water.
[tense music playing]
[nathan] oh, my god.
[tense music playing]
That just sounded like
a caiman moving in the water.
[suspenseful music playing]
[nathan] oh, yeah,
that was a caiman.
[molly] it was.
It was a little
baby caiman. Well...
[molly] scampering back up
to its den.
We know they're in here, then.
And I know they have
a den up there.
Leave that for another day.
Now I know there's caiman
for sure in there,
Just as I suspected.
[tense music playing]
[bird screeches]
I can't wait
to get in that water.
This feels amazing.
We make it to the beach
And the first thing I do
Is go straight into the ocean.
And nathan's preparing
to climb a coconut tree
To get some of the coconuts
down for us.
[grunts]
[molly] nice.
[nathan] ouch.
[panting]
That was a lot easier
on day one,
I'll tell you that.
Would you like to open your own?
Sure.
- Oh.
- Ooh.
It's still good, still good.
Cheers.
Cheers.
To giant coconuts.
Oh, yeah.
Molly and I are feasting
on coconut
And it is incredible.
Every part of me is happy
That we made this
extreme pilgrimage.
All of my doubts
about whether or not
It was a good idea
just evaporated.
Look at that.
Plums, I don't know
their scientific name.
Got the goodies. Icaco.
As if this day
couldn't get better.
When we were contemplating
this journey,
I was hoping
to at least breakeven
With our calorie deficit,
But this has turned into
Literally a cornucopia.
Yum.
Bountiful beach harvest.
Icaco and a whole gang
of coconut.
We are absolutely killing it.
This is feeling really,
really good.
These icaco will help fuel us
for the hike back.
Good job. High five.
Whoa.
[nathan] oh, there's a crab
right there.
[molly] oh, get it.
Having a lot of rest today
is very important
Because we've been burning
the candle at both ends
And we need to just relax
and recuperate
Because this is a marathon,
not a sprint.
[suspenseful music playing]
- Yes!
- [molly] did you get it?
- Yes!
- [molly] oh!
[bleep] yeah!
- Yes!
- Breakfast.
First crab. We can eat crab...
[molly] oh, yeah.
We can cook them up.
- [molly] yes!
- Could you believe
That I snuck up on him?
Did you see how slow I went?
- Amazing.
- Oh, my god.
- Yes.
- First crab on the board.
[molly] yeah.
[bleep] yes!
- Mmm-hmm.
- This is amazing.
So good.
The air feels moist.
Mmm-hmm.
I'm thinking, like,
We could cut down
a bunch of banana leaves
For the platform.
I know that we need
the rest today,
But I am a little anxious
about the weather
That could be moving towards us.
We're gonna collect
some banana leaves
And kind of layer
And lay them down
over the platform.
And if need be, we would
attempt to hunker down
Underneath the platform itself.
[nathan] isn't that a nice
amount of paneling?
- [molly] yeah, it's great.
- I think that that, plus that,
I think that we might be
able to stay dry.
Which would be crucial.
Do your worst, colombia,
do your worst.
[dramatic music playing]
[monkey chirping]
This is the beginning
of our setup
Of our coverage shelter.
And put all this on top of it,
Hopefully help it drain.
This is all the firewood
for the night.
Molly and I are going to be
On the opposite side of that,
Just with barely
any space for us.
It's gonna be a wild night,
I feel the rain coming, and...
[sighs] I wish we could
just have a day to chill,
But it is a challenge,
And that's why they call it
a challenge.
[thunder rumbling]
- Yup.
- Uh-oh.
[thunder rumbling]
[nathan] oh, yeah.
[nathan speaking]
Yeah.
- Get under there?
- Yeah.
Oh, my god!
The storm has hit
and we are under our shelter.
We have a fire,
But it is leaking on our butts.
So we're not dry,
but at least...
- Not entirely.
- Our fire is still going...
Yeah.
- So that's...
- We got...
The most important thing
right now,
And we're just hoping
that it holds.
We've got hope in that.
It's gonna be a long night.
It's gonna be a long night.
[thunder rumbling]
[tense music playing]
We did have rain last night
And we ended up on the ground,
under the platform.
Let's just use a touch
of this to get it humming.
I just need to step away
from it for a second
Because it's making me feel
really sick.
It's warm and dry,
But we've had the fire
pretty far underneath there
To preserve it.
The smoke was kind of
hanging back in the area
That we were camped under,
And I just feel like
It's making me feel ill today.
So I really would like
to finish getting the roof
Up on the shelter.
I'm gonna go back over
to that clearing
And see if I can grab the bamboo
That we already have down there,
And bring it back up here,
So we can start
shaping things out.
Modifying the current platform
to include a roof structure.
Before you get too far
along with that,
Consider for a second
that I was up all night
Tending the fire
because during the rain,
It has to be fed all the time,
you know?
If we build a roof
for a shelter,
We can't put the fire
under the platform,
So we need to build a new
fire protection structure.
If we have the fire
in a separate structure,
We're going to have to be
getting up to feed it,
As opposed to laying down
and feeding it.
Essentially, we'll be
making it more difficult
To tend the fire.
You basically have to choose
either getting up
Every time to feed the fire
or some smoke inhalation,
Which your body will adapt to.
It's... I just...
That's not something
that I really want to chance
With my asthma, so...
Yeah. But I've been the one
tending to the fire at night
For every night so far.
So I'm telling you,
I'm not okay with doing that
every night
And you making it more
difficult for me to do that,
Just because
you're telling me, like,
You're taking a stand
on your principle of health,
I understand that,
and I respect that.
But, this structure functions,
And you can go ahead
And process that one
all you like,
But I'm not going
to help you do something
That makes it harder
for me to survive.
Yeah.
And if we have to stay
under here again tonight,
That's fine.
But we need to get off
the ground
With a roof over our heads.
I'm just really concerned
that we're, like,
Heading into day five
And we still don't have,
like, our full structure.
I know,
but it's fully up to you.
If you wanna go at the machete
At that stuff all day long,
then be my guest,
I'm not gonna stop you.
But I'm just bringing up,
Like, my concerns
because I have also been,
Like, putting myself
with sleep exhaustion,
Physical stuff through equal
Or more rigorous things
than you have.
So I'm in the same boat
as you...
[molly] mmm-hmm.
But I just think that besides
the smoke inhalation,
The structure
didn't leak at all,
And it maintained the fire,
So I would prefer
to just focus on calories,
So I just... I just wanna
voice my concerns,
But go ahead and process away.
Yeah. I know. I just wanna
keep making progress.
Sounds good.
[molly] I don't know
why nathan is okay
With the way
that the shelter is,
And what he's saying about
the fire doesn't make sense
[sighs]
I'm trying to just maintain
Some level of partnership
When we disagree on things
But I also recognize that
Nathan is a personality typ
That there's probably not
A whole lot of reasoning with.
And knowing that,
I feel like I'm just trying
to navigate around it.
You want to tend fire
while I go walk
On a caiman run?
Okay.
I'm going to focus
on getting calories
Because the structure met
All of my criteria last night.
So I'm very, very confident
In another night
in that structure
Even if it is torrential
downpours
And thunderstorms again.
Okay. I'm out to scout
the caiman.
[molly] all right. Good luck.
Thank you.
Nathan has all these
grand plans of hunting caima
And runs off with the machete.
So now, there's not
a lot I could do
To make progress on the shelter
And that's frustrating for sure.
[suspenseful music playing]
Oh, limes.
Not many calories
but I'll take it.
Also, win already.
I am just masterful
at hunting and gathering.
Oh, my gosh. Fish.
I think that molly
is just out of her element.
For me to teach molly
to perceive the environment
In the way that I am
that is allowing me
To be so hyper-successful
in my gathering of calories,
It would take at least
five years of training.
Big old fish
But that means there's caiman
in here for sure
Because if there's
those big fish,
It's feeding on fish I bet.
It's not something
that you learn overnight.
It's like a...
It's an awareness
And presence of mind
that one in a hundred,
If not, one in a thousand have.
This is the area at night
Where the caiman will be.
Cool.
[suspenseful music playing]
Is that a little fruit
right there?
Oh, my god. These are dates.
[scoffs]
Dates are a very high
calorie food
So that would be
a score of the century
If these are dates.
This had been a pretty
Fruitful endeavor... [laughs]
I got to stop
with these dad jokes.
[suspenseful music playing]
- [molly] what are those?
- Found some interesting stuff.
[molly] yeah?
[nathan] no caiman
unfortunately but...
I found these weird
date-like things.
They look like dates.
But they smell, kind of, weird
and ants were eating them
So that means there's sugar
in them like, but...
Oh, yeah. It, kind of, smell
like, uh, cucumber.
- Yeah. Right?
- Yeah.
And the best thing of all,
I found...
Drum roll, limes.
Amazing. Oh, my gosh.
- [nathan] isn't that cool?
- Can we eat one now?
[nathan] of course.
There's... There's plenty.
Too bad there's not that many
calories in it but...
[molly] I know, but it'll...
Just like the flavor,
- You know...
- [nathan] yeah.
[molly] will help.
Hmm. The fragrance.
Isn't it crazy
how much things smell?
[molly] I know.
Especially when you're hungry.
That's what I mean.
It's like, it heightens your...
[molly] yeah. All your senses.
Hmm.
[nathan] we should probably
start gathering firewood
For the night because
we're gonna need a lot,
Or it's gonna be
a really cold night.
You can hear the thunder.
- Yeah.
- I really hope
It doesn't visit us
but just based on the sky,
It looks like it's going to.
[thunder rumbles]
- [nathan speaking]
- [molly speaking]
[nathan speaking]
Wish us luck, um...
It kind of helps... [laughs]
Yeah... [laughs]
This is not very, uh, fun
But, uh, that's not
what we signed up for.
[nathan] holy [bleep]
The rain put us in our shelter
Really early yesterday night,
Like, two or three hours
before sunset.
So we've been in our shelter
For about 15 hours.
The sun's finally
about to arrive.
I think, thank god
because I am tired
Of laying down the shelter,
Just waiting, and waiting,
and waiting.
Luckily, I got some pretty
decent sleep but...
Oh. Sure hope this rain stops.
It's just so miserable.
[dramatic music playing]
[blowing]
So what is your plan
for the shelter?
I'm gonna throw
a couple more planks
On the edge here
And then just a-frame above it
And, kind of, fill in
with leaves and branches
And stuff like that.
[nathan] got you.
[molly] it was another nigh
on the ground
Under the platform
And so after a few days
Of trying to make progress
on the shelter together,
I'm just deciding
to build my own
At the other end temporarily
And hopefully, we can later
Work together on the more
permanent structure.
So in making, um,
your own shelter,
It's going to create
a couple logistical issues.
Um, one of them being
We're gonna have to maintain
two fires,
Which is going to make
the firewood even more scarce.
I'm thinking I might just
Make it more insulated
With plant material
And not have the fire.
You don't think that's gonna
create a bug problem?
I think, like, temporarily,
it's fine.
Every time I do try
To bring in a plan
Towards making progress on this,
Nathan has some reason
why we shouldn't
Be focusing on that right now.
I'm over his micromanaging
So I am just going
to respectfully
Do it on my own.
I was thinking about
going to start
Gathering materials
in a little bit.
Got the fire going,
Freshwater.
Let's just get
one piece of bamboo
And switch other piece...
We can get a piece
of bamboo switch...
Okay. So you wanna build
the shelter now?
I wanna get all
of the materials here first
And then once
everything is here,
Then we can start
to construct the roof,
- Okay?
- Okay.
Last time that
she tried to do something
With the blade and the bamboo,
She cut herself
so I am 99.9% sure
That if I delegate the task
Of finishing the shelter to her
While I hunt,
which is what I wanna do,
That she is going
to probably end up
Hurting herself again
And not making it
through the 21 days.
So I'm helping molly
with the structure.
[chuckles]
Off with a bang.
[dramatic music playing]
[nathan] it's your turn now
if you wanna
Finish the chopping.
Suddenly, it's nathan's idea
To start gathering materials
to finish the roof
On our platform to make it
a more substantial shelter.
I'm finding a pattern of where
He has to make the idea
Sound like it's coming from him.
So I'm just, kind of,
placating at this point.
So I just think it's funny
And frustrating
at the same time,
But what are you gonna do?
I'm just gonna keep my head up
And keep moving.
I'm not gonna be
able to really do
much more of this tonight
Because we have to gather
A significant amount of firewood
Just to make it
through the night
Because the sky is graying
And it looks like
it might rain again so...
All right.
I'm gonna grab some materials
To just do my own thing
At the other end for the night.
Are you gonna split them?
No. Just lash a couple poles
And just a-frame up from there.
Make sure to keep
the, uh, pot boiling
Because I'm about
to go on a caiman walk.
Yeah. Sure.
Because we need to have water.
You know, water is
a real big priority.
Like, your shelter
and everything is, like,
Important to you but we have
to, like, stay team-minded,
- You know...
- Yeah. I hear you.
I can boil the water.
Working on my temporary
shelter for the night,
Got a later start than expected
Since we're apparently
not on schedule
To get the structure
up again today,
But trying to make
some headway right now.
- How'd it go?
- No caiman.
[nathan speaking]
Yeah. But I'm trying
not to modify
The, uh, bamboo that we have
For the other.
I'm just doing
what I can right now.
[molly] yeah.
Are we planning to...
Finish the structure tomorrow?
I mean, we're gonna work on it.
I don't know. It just...
It takes longer than I think
That you imagine,
just like you thought
It was gonna be done today.
Like, I knew
it wasn't gonna happen.
[molly] okay.
But I just wanna be able
To plan for if
I should work on my own thing
- Or if we're gonna get...
- Well, I mean,
If you wanna just continuously
work on your own thing
Then we're just going
to start working
On our own stuff, period.
Because you are wasting
calories right now
For nothing
that has to do with team.
This is all for you.
And it's not even a good plan.
It's not gonna work. Period.
- Just not.
- [molly] I'm just...
I know you're frustrated.
I know but...
No, no, no.
Because I'm working
for both of us right now.
I've worked for both of us
this entire time.
If you're gonna start
- Doing stuff on your own...
- Dude...
And not working for the team...
[molly] can you listen?
I've been working
For the team as well.
Your idea is always
the right idea.
I mean, but look at yours.
Okay. So I have less time
Than I thought I was going to...
Yes. So that's what
I'm saying. So if your plan
Doesn't work, it doesn't work.
I'm not gonna...
I'm not gonna indulge
your fantasy anymore.
- If you want...
- Indulge my fantasy?
You had a fantasy
that this would work.
- It doesn't work. So...
- Okay.
I knew it wasn't going to work.
- Nathan...
- And you didn't...
- You are...
- There we are.
Nathan, everything
that I bring up,
You undermined and condescend.
In what way?
I have brought up
that I would like
To make more progress
on our shelter
For the entire time
that we've been here.
We're a week in.
- We're a week in.
- We are six days in
- Right now and we spent...
- And I'm coming...
The whole day of day six
working on it.
Can you let me finish, please?
You just don't make any sense.
- Dude.
- You literally...
You are condescending me
As I'm trying to explain to you.
So I feel like you are
consistently undermining
When I bring up an idea.
Give me some other examples.
Every other time
I brought up that we need
To fill out our shelter.
What day? When I was just
gathering all the food?
Come on...
I've been trying to get you
to come to the table
- And it's impossible.
- I already did.
Look at the bamboo.
See, I didn't wanna
do that today.
I did it because
you asked for it.
So don't ask like I'm not
coming to the table. No, no.
I'm not going to act
like I'm in the wrong here.
If you think in some fantasy
in your mind that
You have done more than half
the work thus far,
It is unbelievable to me.
- Dude.
- I am sorry
- But I am doing more...
- I'm trying to affix your...
- No.
- Every time I tried to do
- Something for us...
- Explain what?
All you said is the shelter
And we've been working
on the shelter.
We haven't really.
- We've done that.
- It's been you domineering
- Every part of this.
- Well, this is the thing.
Because I have gotten
95% of the calories.
- Okay.
- So I have gotten...
Because you were like, okay,
I need you to stay here
And tend to the fire.
I tend to the fire
more than you.
- You are delusional.
- During the day...
During the day...
You are delusional. No.
I am 50/50 on the fire.
I get more water than you.
I literally do everything
more than you.
You need to step it up
or you need to listen.
Those are your only choices.
Or we can continue
the challenge completely apart
And that is perfectly
fine with me.
You are not rationally
Thinking about any of this.
And you're about to have
a really rude wakeup call
If you don't change your tone.
- You are delusional.
- During the day...
No, you are delusional.
No. I am 50/50 on the fire.
I get more water than you.
I literally do everything
more than you.
You need to step it up
or you need to listen.
Those are your only choices.
Or we can continue
the challenge completely apart
And that is perfectly fine
with me.
You are not rationally
Thinking about any of this.
And you're about to have
a really rude wakeup call
If you don't change your tone.
I appreciate you
sharing it with me.
No, you don't.
You're... Well, you better.
You better appreciate it
And you better change your tone
Or it's over from now on.
You are wrong
about all of the things
That you have said,
except for the fact
That I am calling
most of the shots
Because I am more
competent, period.
Do not diminish what I've done
- Because I have done...
- I'm not diminishing
- What you've done.
- More than anyone
In this challenge has ever done
In the first week, period.
- Okay.
- No. No.
- Not okay.
- What?
If you wanna continue
gaining the benefit
Of getting 50%
of what I have gotten,
Then you better
change your tone.
I don't care
if I come off condescending
Slightly at points.
It's because my ideas
at this point,
Unfortunately, have been better.
I'm not going to pretend
that they haven't.
You're out of your element
and it's obvious.
Dude, you don't have to be rude.
- No. You are being rude.
- I'm not being rude.
You're biting the hand
that feeds.
- Yes, you are.
- Dude.
You are biting the hand
that feeds.
[eerie music playing]
Anyway, so I'm gonna try
to get some rest.
[foreboding music playing]
[molly]
I had a pretty negative
Encounter with nathan.
And it's really made me question
Whether I wanna continue
with this challenge.
I kind of feel like
I'm moving in slow motion.
I'm like tired from not sleeping
And emotionally drained.
I don't really know
what I wanna do.
And I feel like
I'm kind of wandering.
My ability to perform
Wilderness survival
Shouldn't be contingent on
My dealing with
A toxic personality
like nathan's.
And so I think that's what
I'm struggling with right now.
Cordage.
I'm pulling down
some vining plants
To use the vine as cordage
To weave a fishing basket
That I'm going to attempt
to create today.
I want doing a task like this,
Creating something,
Going out
and exploring to, like,
Take my mind off things.
But it hasn't really.
It's almost noon.
It's been like
Four and a half hours.
I have to assume molly
is not coming back though.
I'm not sure if she tapped,
Not sure if she's left her
fire starter for me.
Right now,
I'm pretty frustrated.
What the serious [bleep]?
[dramatic music playing]
So what's going on?
Um, I'm just doing
My own thing right now.
Got you.
All right.
Well, let's just continue
doing that.
I'll do my own thing,
you do your own thing.
I kind of wanna find a more
Off-the-path location.
It's difficult to separate
The toxic situation
here with nathan,
From the reasons
why I wanted to be here
Because even if we do go
our separate ways,
We're still in the same area
Sometimes
the best survival skill
Is to remove yourself
from a toxic situation.
Nice, flesh already developed.
I feel relieved.
I'm doing my own thing.
But I'm also a bit anxious
Because I don't know
If I'm going to have
to maintain this fire
For the rest of the challeng
without any fire starter,
So it puts
a lot of pressure on me
Because if the fire goes out,
I'm going to be between
a rock and a hard space.
[molly] right now,
I'm giving serious consideration
To whether or not I wanna tap.
And it's not an easy decisio
to make at all
But everything
in my body right now
Is telling me to go.
I'm just trying to give tha
A consideration that it's due.
I didn't anticipate
that this would be
My most challenging point
of this,
But here we are.
Here is my new
temporary shelter.
I'm staying out here
for the night,
On a bed of iroko leaves,
Which is actually quite
comfortable I should say.
More comfortable than the dirt.
This is where I'm going to do
A lot of thinking
about my next steps.
I just still pretty shaken.
[dramatic music playing]
As difficult a decision
as this has been to make,
I feel like...
I feel like staying true
to myself
And understanding
that I'm allowed
To give myself grace,
Even in situations like this,
To act on my inner knowing
Is really important.
What's going on, molly?
Hey.
I wanna tap out.
Okay. If that's
your final decision,
I'll get a car
and we'll get you out of here.
Okay. Yeah.
That's what I'd like.
I'm sad to leave.
I'm disappointed in
Not finishing what I set out to.
I'm a strong person
with strong skills
But everyone reaches
their breaking point
And this fight with nathan
made me reach mine.
- Hey, nathan.
- Yes?
I wanna let you know
that your partner molly
Has decided to tap today.
I don't know if you wanna say
any last words to her
Before she heads out.
I sincerely doubt that
she wants to hear from me,
To be perfectly honest with you.
I'm not going to say
that I was wrong
About the things that I said,
It's the way that I said them
that was wrong
And I don't think
that that's an apology
That she's going to wanna hear.
I mean, I guess saying sorry
couldn't hurt.
- Hey, molly.
- Hey.
Heard that you're tapping.
I just wanted to say
before you go
That I'm really sorry
for overreacting
And it wasn't right of me
at all.
And when I feel criticized,
I overreact often and pop off
and it's not right,
And it's something
that I have to work on,
And I just want to say that
I'm genuinely sorry for that.
And you didn't deserve that.
Thank you.
I appreciate that apology.
- Fire starter?
- Thank you.
I appreciate it.
Definitely.
And good luck.
Enjoy getting back to the city.
Mmm-hmm.
- Bye.
- Bye.
I'm surprised that
he came with the apology.
I would like to believe
that that was sincere.
Aside from the conflict
with nathan,
I feel I was very capable
Of enduring the elements,
Enduring
the physical discomforts.
I wasn't necessarily
afforded the chance
To really realize
all of my skills
But that's for another time.
This has been
a hard decision to make
But knowing my self-worth
Is more important
than this challenge.
And I'm worth more
Than how I was treated
And I think it does take
a strong person
To walk away
from a situation like this.
[narrator] after eight days
molly exits the challenge.
Her psr drops
From 6.7 to 5.9.
Ready to get to work
on improving my shelter.
Going to build the fire
awning right here
That will connect with my...
The bed of the shelter.
And it will be large enough
such that
Before I finish the roof
for the shelter,
If rain comes,
I'll be able to just sleep
Under the fire awning
with the fire.
Now that molly's gone,
it's just way easier for me
To get down to business
And to work on the improvements
That I need to work on.
I have a really strong game plan
For the next 12 days.
My plans for today are to build
A new fire protection structure.
Ten more to go.
Possibly tomorrow, I am going
to go back to the beach
And I'm gonna climb the trees
and get some more coconuts.
It's gonna be really,
really trying day
But the upside of that
is I'm going to have
Coconuts until about day 15, 16,
At which time I'm just goin
to fast out the rest of it.
I think it's gonna be
a good 12 days
But we'll see
what colombia throws at me.
I'm pretty well set up
right now.
Once I get my coconuts tomorrow,
There's nothing stopping me
from getting to day 21.
[dramatic music playing]
Here goes nothing.
I'm feeling good.
Now that molly's gone,
I just have to feed
one person, myself.
So I am going to go back
to the beach
And I'm gonna climb the tree
and get some more coconuts.
This is gonna be treacherous
But the caloric gain from it
Is going to be well worth it.
Oh my gosh.
Jobo fruit.
Oh, yeah, there's so many.
Fudge yes.
God, I love it.
I'm gonna fuel up
on some jobo fruit.
Give me some energy.
Based on my research,
these jobo fruit
Taste like a mixture
between a lime and a mango.
They're a little bit bitter
And some of them are fermented.
Bugs.
There are plenty.
This is huge.
Looking for the firmer ones
That haven't been scavenged
by bugs yet.
Should be good for now.
And that's how
you get ticks 101.
But it's also how you get
a bag full of jobo fruit.
I'm gonna snack on these
on the journey.
It's gonna give me glycogen
to get up those trees.
[dramatic music playing]
Almost just walked face
first into a spider web.
Wow, that jobo fruit
really pumped me up.
I can feel just energy
coursing through my veins.
Right when I get to the beach,
my first priority
Is gonna be looking
for coconuts on the ground.
I hear the ocean roaring,
so I must be close.
It's the first view
of the ocean I've had
In about six days.
Sure does look beautiful.
This is my first time doing
the insertion hike solo.
Means that I can go
on my own pace
But it also means
I have to take the burden
All onto myself
to get everything back
And makes me
a little bittersweet
About the whole situation.
And I'm glad I apologized
but part of me
Wishes she was here right now.
[dramatic music playing]
Right up here is the first
moderately sized coconut tree
That I could see
myself climbing.
I'm gonna go scout
and see if I can traverse
The landscape up to it,
but it looks pretty rough
And there's not a path
of any sort, so...
Here goes nothing.
[tense music playing]
Looks like a sprouted coconut.
Oh, my god, these are all
sprouted coconuts.
[narrator] coconut sprouts
contain an edible
Sponge like flesh
that is rich in carbohydrate
And slightly sweet.
Oh, my god, if this is... Ow!
Something just bit me.
If this is what I think it is,
Then I'm going to have
an abundance,
But they might be too far.
Ouch.
Ouch. [bleep] wasp.
Ow.
God. [bleep]
Okay, there's a wasp hive
that lives on this coconut.
Ouch, that hurt,
But I've already gotten
like five or six stings,
So I'm not gonna quit now.
I'm gonna see
what's in that coconut.
Mama didn't raise a quitter.
No pain no gain.
Get the...
[tense music playing]
Ah.
Damn you.
[grunts]
Looks like I win this round.
No bueno.
That wasn't worth it.
It doesn't look like
much is here.
I'm gonna go check the next tree
And see what dangers await me.
Holy moly.
That's the mother lode up there.
Oh, joy rhapsody.
Yes.
Now I have to decide if I wanna
Make all my climbing
into one coconut tree,
Because that's about 15 coconuts
But it's very treacherous
and difficult.
Oh, man, that's high.
If I fall from this tree,
I'm definitely gonna
be auto tapped
With some serious injury,
But if I climb up this one tree,
It saves me climbing
a dozen more
To find the same thing,
so go big or go home,
That's what I always say.
[tense music playing]
[panting]
Oh, god.
Oh, my god.
I dropped my machete.
[bleep]
Ouch.
[grunts]
Oh, god.
[whimsical music playing]
[nathan] molly has discovere
that covering her body
With ash seems
to be working against bugs.
So I'm gonna get all greased up.
- [molly] ashy.
- Do I look pretty?
[molly] yeah.
- [nathan] nice.
- We're stylin',
Because ash is really
our friend right now.
- Yes, it is.
- [laughs]
It honestly
is making it so the bugs
Are completely gone,
which is, like...
- Yeah.
- [molly] yes.
[nathan] if you're having
bug problems, I feel...
[both] bad for you son.
Got 99 problems but...
- Bugs ain't one.
- Insect ain't one.
[laughter]
- Hit me.
- Hit me.
[tense music playing]
Oh, my god.
I dropped my machete.
[bleep]
Ouch.
[panting]
Oh, man.
That got me real bad.
I had to slide all the way down.
I was too tired to climb.
Ouch. That's real pain
right there.
Man, I don't know if I can climb
Anymore today, that's awful.
Now I got to find the machete
Before I leave or I'm screwed.
The worst part is,
I don't know where it went.
That's the price you pay
for going big.
Ouch!
Ouch!
And ouch!
Where the [bleep] is my machete?
Oh, here it is. Yes.
Had to [bleep] trip on it.
Thank god not all is lost.
Oh, wow.
Ouch.
Well, that was a stupid idea.
[dramatic music playing]
Ouch.
Ouch!
Oh, my god, there's
a giant coconut right there.
I might go back
with some coconuts after all.
I have to see.
Water.
Bringing back these coconuts
it's gonna be hard,
Both my feet
are completely torn.
Every step I take
chafes between my legs
And my chest is raw.
Anything that touches it
is agony
Literally, like, agony.
[grunts]
Oh, god,
I need to get back so bad.
[dramatic music playing]
Yeah, it's like rotten.
Oh, that's disappointing.
I just hacked through
this coconut
And it took me 20 minutes
and a lot of energy
To hack through it
and it's really bad.
Back at square one.
Oh, man, what a day.
I hope that I can get
some sleep tonight
Despite the pain.
It must be,
I don't know,
3:00 am or something.
My rub burn
from that coconut tree
Is just agonizingly painfully.
It just kept me up all night.
Oh, I just need some sleep.
But I can't get comfortable
Because I can't move my legs,
But come hell or high water,
I'm gonna get through it.
I'm gonna tough it out.
What else can I do?
Ahh.
[tense music playing]
[nathan] [blows air]
Please just light on fire.
Ouch!
God, kneeling down
and getting up
Has been so bad on my scabs,
It's just tearing them so much.
[grunts]
God, I'm in so much pain
right now.
[sighs]
Today has been the hardest
day for me by far.
Fire has been really hard
to start,
And the thing that's making it
the hardest
Is I have these really,
really bad rashes
On the side of my legs.
They're really, really severe.
Every time I move,
it's straight up agony.
Oh, my god, ow...
[sighs]
[groaning]
[bleep] it hurts, man.
Okay.
I'm gonna go get some water.
Ow!
I can do this.
I'm doing it.
Doing it right now.
Despite all the pain.
Oh, man, my balls hurt.
This is awful.
Oh, my god, this is rough.
And my water looks grosser
and grosser every day.
Something as simple
as going to get water
Just takes a lot of willpowe
and determination,
Because every step I take
splits my scabs
Will open wide and
to bend over for the water,
Just makes it even worse,
So it's really hard
doing just basic tasks.
[thunder rumbles]
[nathan]
the wood is incredibly wet.
I've been tending it
for the last hour.
I can't get it
a bigger flame than that.
Every time that I bend over
it's agonizingly painful.
I have to keep bending over
to blow into it.
So if it rains,
I'm not gonna have a fire
for a few days,
Because I'm out of dry wood
after tonight.
[thunder rumbling]
This is awful.
There's no way
I can even boil water
On a flame like this.
[tense music playing]
That rainstorm came out
of literally nowhere.
If it wasn't hard before.
Ah.
[coughs]
Dammit.
[bleep] fire.
Oh, my god.
[tense music playing]
Dammit.
It's day 11 today,
I'm in huge pain.
My biggest worry today
Is that my wounds get infected.
They have developed
a slight odor.
But there's nothing else
I can do.
I just have to be patient
and let my body heal itself.
And I really hope
that it doesn't take too long.
I should have been working
on my shelter.
I could have spent my time
better and I didn't.
I just don't wanna deal
with this right now.
Come on, rain,
don't do me like that.
My whole shelter is wet.
I'm gonna get infected
With all the mud in my shelter.
I'm coming out.
I'm done.
I'm tapping.
I can't take it anymore.
My butt hurts.
My thigh is hurt.
This rainstorm is crazy.
If this rainstorm didn't come,
I think I probably
would have made it,
Because tomorrow I would have
reinforced everything,
But that's probably me
destroying myself.
I wanna get out of here.
Okay.
Is that your final decision?
- We'll get you out of here.
- It's my final decision.
I was talking a big game,
Trying to convince myself
that I'd make it,
But I've reached my limit.
And that's it.
I can't believe it.
I can't believe it.
I still have energy
to keep going,
It just, like,
I just don't want to.
Eleven days out here
was plenty for me.
I shouldn't have climbed
that palm tree.
I shouldn't have injured myself.
It was all a risk
that didn't need to be taken
I should have been working
on my shelter.
I should have been preparin
for a crazy storm like this
But the truth is I didn't.
My biggest regret
is being stubborn
And stuck in my ways.
[narrator] after 11 days,
Nathan's decision to tap ou
Drops his psr from 6.9
To 5.7.
[nathan] I've learned a lot
I need to be a nicer person
that's for sure.
I have no one to blame
but myself.
You think you're tough
enough until you're not.
And that's the truth of it.
That's the mother lode up there.
Oh, my god.
[molly] you're gonna climb?
Yeah. I'm just gonna climb it.
Go big or go home.
That's what I always say.
[tense music playing]
[nathan grunts]
Oh, my god.
I dropped my machete.
Ouch.
[molly] be careful.
[bleep].
[nathan shouts]
Ouch. Ouch.
[birds chirping]
[nathan] here we go.
Yeah!
I'm in the middle of nowhere.
I have nothing but ocean
And open coastline around me.
I can see that there are
a lot of coconut trees,
Some bamboo,
and a thick carpet of jungle
This is a pretty lush
environment.
I've never been
to colombia before.
The humidity with the heat
is tough.
This environment
is very different
From the high desert
And mountainous region
of utah where I live,
But overall it's gonna be
an incredible experience.
[groans]
[narrator] off the caribbea
coast of northern colombia
Lies the san salvador river
basin.
The dense tropical terrain
Combines four distinct
landscapes,
Beaches, mangroves,
Rivers, and jungle.
With midday temperatures
Reaching into the 90s,
The thick vegetation
and swampy waters
Provide cover
For some of south america's
deadliest wildlife.
Jaguars prowl the jungle,
Taking down prey
with their stealth and spee
Which can reach up
to 50 miles per hour.
While 12-foot caiman
Can lurk beneath
the murky river water
For more than an hour,
Waiting to drown their victims
Before they eat them.
A lot of people are survivalists
With a beer in their hand,
But this is the real thing.
I guess this is it.
Being naked for me
is not a problem.
As anyone who has ever lived
with me knows,
I walk around naked a lot,
So I'm not gonna have
any problem with it.
[molly] hey, I'm comfortabl
being naked
In front of a stranger.
It also helps that that stranger
Is also going to be naked.
[chuckles]
I'm going to meet my partner.
I'm hoping that
they're as excited to meet me
As I am to meet them,
And that we get rolling here.
[clicks tongue] do I have
anything in my teeth?
I am pretty nervous.
I hope that she is cool
and helpful
And we'll get along just fine.
I don't really believe
In conforming to traditional
gender rules.
When it comes to survival tasks,
I think both parties pulling
equal weight in whatever way
Is the best combination.
And, hopefully, that's
something that we'd agree on
Hey, yo.
What's up?
I'm nathan.
Nathan. I'm molly.
- Nice to meet you, molly.
- Oh, bring it in.
- Bring it in.
- [laughter]
Well...
How are you feeling about this?
I'm a little bit awkward.
- I just...
- Yeah.
I'm trying to maintain
eye contact.
Yeah. [laughs]
I'm excited to see
what your skillset is.
I'm an outdoor educator
and wilderness guide.
The outdoors is my happy place.
I've experienced
as an outdoor educator
Teaching wilderness surviva
And wilderness trekking skills.
Then went on to become
a wilderness first responder
Over the last couple years,
I've gotten more into
primitive survival
As a way to be
better prepared going out
On adventures.
I'm excited to test my skill
Under different circumstance
than I'm used to.
With this challenge,
I'm trying to prove to myself
That I can handle
whatever comes at me
And be able to take it on
with grace and succeed.
[narrator]
molly's wilderness emt skill
Will be an asset in the jungle,
But her lack of experience
in a tropical climate
Could make it difficult for her.
She starts with
a primitive survival rating
Or psr, of 6.7.
I'm a great fire starter,
Shelter builder, forging.
Okay.
- Yeah.
- I...
Mostly hunting,
shelter-building.
I've been practicing
primitive survival
Since I was about
five years old.
My brother and I would go
deep into the woods
And build shelters
And pretend that
we're living off of the land
Now, I raise my own land,
Chickens and grow all of my
vegetables and fruit
At my homestead.
Oh, look at this.
I consider myself
more of a lone wolf
Than a team player.
I know that I would have
no problem making it 21 day
Without my partner.
I'm always looking
for an opportunity
To push myself further
Than anyone else will go,
And this is the perfect
opportunity for me to do that.
[narrator]
nathan is comfortable
Living off the land
But his lone wolf mentality
Could make working
with a partner difficult.
He starts with a psr of 6.9
Feels like this is the start
of a good partnership.
I think so.
Let's get through these
21 days 'cause I ain't...
- I'm not tapping if you don't.
- All right.
- No tap pact.
- No tap pact.
Okay. Good. [laughs]
Awesome.
I can see our stuff over here.
Let's check out what we got.
[narrator] molly and nathan
have each brought
A survival item.
I have my awesome machete.
Nice.
I got my fire starter.
I have the same one.
- Do you really?
- Yeah.
- That's awesome.
- [laughter]
[narrator] and been given
a pot to boil water.
I've got the map in here
as well.
So here,
we are at our meet point.
Looks like we've got
a water source right here.
Yup. So that'll be camp.
Some dangers,
Fer-de-lance, caiman,
Corral snakes, and jaguars.
I'm gonna try to hunt
some caimans though.
- Amazing.
- I'm gonna be...
I'm gonna be exploring
some of the...
Some of the danger zones.
[chuckles]
Cool. I love it.
It looks like it's pretty
dense through here.
- Yeah.
- So let's see if we can walk
Along the beach
and then cut in, yup.
Cool. All right.
- All right.
- Shall we?
- Yeah. Let's.
- Let's go.
Just met my partner molly.
She seems super cool.
I think that her fire skills
From her survival
wilderness teaching
Will probably come in
pretty handy.
And I know that she'll be able
to tend fire
And keep everything going
while I go out and explore.
I'm pretty excited.
Seems like a good fit.
And I couldn't have asked
for anything better.
[tense music playing]
[nathan]
look at all this vine.
[molly]
I know. Such good cordage.
[nathan] I know how to make
cordage out of bamboo as well.
[molly] oh, excellent.
[nathan] looks like
we got some coconuts here.
Let's collect them
'cause we don't know
When we're gonna get water
going tonight.
We might not start a fire so...
That's a good point.
Already feeling good
about this partnership.
I think we're gonna balance
each other really well.
I think his hunting skills
will be awesome.
Nice, nathan.
And he's got this
super technique
For getting coconuts down
From higher palm trees.
Excellent.
Whew.
Nice work
grabbing those coconuts.
- Grab some cordage?
- Yeah. I grab some cordage,
- Some vines.
- They'll come in handy.
Well, this is gonna be nice.
At least, we'll have something
to drink tonight.
- Totally.
- Mwah.
Well, let's continue on.
This is a good start.
[waves crashes]
[nathan] we should be careful
with the rocks
And the current.
[molly] it does look like
we lose the beach to walk on.
- So we'll take a...
- Yeah, so we might need.
- More rugged...
- To cut in over here.
- All right.
- Looks like we climb up here.
Scramble up here.
We gotta head into the jungle.
We can find some water
up there for sure.
- Yeah. Definitely.
- Fresh water.
[tense music playing]
[nathan] keep an eye out
for snakes.
This is snake city right here.
[molly] yeah.
Big hiding spots.
[nathan] oh, look at that.
Snake skin.
Let's see.
Uh, looks like a snake belly.
Yeah.
Sort of looks like the sign
of a fer-de-lance.
Oh.
[narrator] the fer-de-lance
is the deadliest snake
In south america,
Killing more humans
than any other reptile.
With their oversized fangs,
They can inject 16 times
the lethal dose
Of hemotoxic venom,
Which attacks red blood cells,
Causing muscle
and skin tissue to die.
[nathan] necrosis is not good.
- [molly] no.
- Hemotoxic venom...
Melts away your muscles.
[tense music playing]
[monkey grunts]
[nathan] it is hot.
[molly] sweltering.
It sure feels like
we've been walking a while.
[nathan]
weighted down with coconuts
Exhausted from this
multi-mile hike,
Sweat is just dripping
down my body.
Damn, I'm getting torched.
The only thing I can think about
Is finding a permanent camp spot
And starting to figure out
the fire
And the water situation.
Oh, yeah. Look at that.
We got water.
[molly] we got the river.
[nathan] we got the river.
[molly] awesome.
[nathan] this looks like
caiman country.
[molly] yeah, it does.
Around dark,
caiman will probably
Be active in this area.
- Awesome.
- We'll have to come back.
Yeah.
[nathan] I think
this is the water source.
[molly]
yeah. I think you're right.
We'll probably wanna make camp
A little ways from here.
Yeah, 'cause it could rise up
if rains come
And torrential downpour.
Let's explore around here
and see...
Yeah. Yeah. Let's try
to find an open...
More open space.
Okay. Let's keep going.
[molly] okay.
[tense music playing]
[nathan] ooh, look at that.
That's a freshly-burrowed
little mud hole.
[molly] yeah.
[nathan] I wonder
what makes these holes,
- Little rodents?
- [molly] I'm thinking crabs,
Honestly.
[nathan] wow, that'd be
a nice-size crab.
[molly] yeah.
[narrator] blue land crabs
burrow underground
And eat leaves and fruit
that they collect
Next to their holes.
The male's defining feature
is his dimorphic claw,
Which can grow to nearly
twice the size of the other
[molly] whoa.
- It's a crazy...
- Oh, that's clay, look.
[molly] yeah, this is clay.
[nathan] oh, we could
potentially use this
To cover our bodies
from mosquitoes.
[molly] hell, yeah.
- Woo.
- A little spa day.
- Oh... [laughs] yeah.
- Spa day.
Let's go.
[chuckles]
I'm pulling this out of my skin,
All the toxins.
Smells a little rank.
[molly chuckles]
[chuckles]
Now that it's all over my body?
[chuckles]
[tense music playing]
[nathan] oh, this looks
pretty open.
[molly]
yeah, this looks great.
This definitely feels
a safer distance away...
- Yeah, from the water.
- From the water.
So maybe this is our spot.
- And it's already flat.
- Yeah.
Tonight I'll try to make
hammocks out of bamboo
And we could hang in the trees
And then really get down
On a serious structure tomorrow.
- Tomorrow? Yeah.
- [nathan] and let...
I think that today
we should focus
On fire and sterilize water.
Sterilize water. Yeah.
We've got to get a fire built
And some type of shelter out.
So I think
this is a good way to go.
It's like our spot.
Looks like home.
A home sweet home.
[chuckles]
[thuds]
Now, that's some thick bamboo.
Our insertion hike took so long
That we don't have many hour
of daylight left,
So I decide that I'm going
to fashion a hammock
Out of bamboo.
And we brought some cordage
from the beach
And my thought is that
we could suspend the bamboo
Between two trees
and hopefully be raised
From the ground
for our sleep tonight.
Wow, good job
with all the firewood.
Yeah, did a... Did a haul.
- Big haul.
- Nice.
So, what's the best way
for us to get this done?
I think that the hammock
making is a one-man job
Because you have to have
blade, so...
[molly] right, you have...
To be able to cut it.
All right. I will...
Oh, you know what,
stripping the leaves off
Of the cordage
and then roping it up
So it's super tidy
and ready to be used.
Mmm-hmm.
Essentially, what I'm gonna do
Is making incisions right here
And all the way down
Eight times and it will spread
Into a hammock.
[pounding]
All right.
I need to be gentle now.
This is the rough frame
of the hammock.
- Dope.
- That should work.
And then we'll tie cordage
on the...
Each side and put it
between two trees,
And this will be the body
of it right here.
[screeching]
[nathan] this might work.
Yeah.
This might just work.
[molly chuckles]
- [nathan] let me try to...
- Should we test it?
[nathan]
yeah, let me try to test it.
Okay.
Here goes nothing.
It's awfully high for comfort.
- [chuckles]
- yeah.
[chuckles] no.
- [nathan chuckles]
- shoot.
[nathan] um...
If this hammock plan
doesn't work,
We can definitely throw together
A debris shelter.
There's a lot of stuff around.
Are you talking about
making a little, like...
- Yeah.
- Yeah, I mean,
That would work. It...
Just for coverage for tonight...
[nathan] yeah. Mmm-hmm.
If it didn't pan out.
Let's use the rest
of our cordage
To try to reinforce this one
since it's already made.
We're, like, 10 minutes away
from this being done
If we just use all the rest
of the cordage on it.
And then at least
one of us has some...
And then I can just,
like, honestly, like,
Right here will be fine for me.
- Are you sure?
- For the night, yes.
- Okay.
- 100%.
If you wanna start
making the fire,
- I could finish doing the...
- Okay.
So let's just try that.
Bamboo hammocks,
It is a really cool idea.
But it might have been bette
To focus on a more permanent
structure.
But we have to just go with that
Because we're running out
of daylight,
We need to get the fire goin
To boil our water
And ward off potential
predators.
Okay. Here we go.
Yeah, that stick lit.
Keep putting little sticks
on it.
As long as them sticks light
we're in business.
Ooh, look at that.
Make it roar.
[molly] dragon breath.
[nathan] I am beyond gratefu
To have a fire on day one.
We're gonna crack some coconuts,
Drink some water,
finish the hammock,
And try to catch some z's
And hit it hard tomorrow.
I'm trying to get
a lot done tomorrow.
We are about to crack open
our first two coconuts.
- Celebratory coconuts.
- Coconut.
[laughs] thank you,
coconut tree.
- Thank you nathan...
- Woo-hoo!
For being a coconut tree
climber.
A palm tree climber.
Monkey man.
Monkey man. [laughs]
We'll definitely
need to figure out
A better shelter situation
tomorrow.
We're in a tropical environment
Where it's sure to rain.
But I'm feeling
really good about, um,
Our situation thus far.
- Cheers.
- Cheers. [laughs]
[tense music playing]
[nathan]
this is the bamboo hammock.
Okay.
Sitting on it.
- [nathan] it seems sturdy.
- Opening it.
Seems pretty sturdy.
- [nathan laughs]
- honestly.
Okay.
So now the part...
[nathan] oh, I could spread it
so you could get on it easier.
Yes.
[molly grunts softly]
- Feet up here.
- [nathan] yeah.
[molly] ooh, okay.
Hopefully you're not gonna
spike your back.
Not too bad.
- [molly screams]
- oh.
[nathan]
this is the bamboo hammock.
Not too bad.
- Oh.
- [molly screams]
- Oh, no.
- [laughter]
- [nathan] are you okay?
- Wait, wait. It looks like
It just slid out.
Shoot.
I know.
Might just have to...
- Roughneck it?
- Cowboy camp it.
Oh, my god.
[laughter]
So much for the hammock idea.
I know. [laughs]
[leopard snarls]
What is that?
[tense music playing]
[molly] I'm just starting
to hear some sounds
Over in the brush over there.
[molly speaking]
[leopard snarls]
[molly speaking]
Well, night one...
Really not getting any sleep.
[laughs]
- All night.
- It's a long night.
Keep hearing something
in the bushes over there.
And we're sleeping
on the ground,
Tending fire.
Oh, there it is again.
[foreboding music playing]
I have the machete ready
for action,
Just in case...
Just in case.
[nathan] ready for whatever
comes our way.
And sleep ain't it.
No, I don't think sleep
is coming in till tomorrow.
Hopefully. [laughs]
[suspenseful music playing]
[birds chirping]
[insect buzzing]
This water honestly tastes
surprisingly good.
When you're this dehydrated
water gets you high.
- [molly] mmm-hmm.
- It feels so good.
Despite being exhausted,
We have some pretty high
energy plans for today.
We have to make a shelter
Because we both slept
on the ground
And it was not ideal.
So we're going
to be making a, uh,
Elevated platform using y,
Um, sticks that we pound
into the ground
As the support.
Hello.
Woo.
- Living dangerously.
- [molly] yeah.
And then bamboo shoots
and then bamboo this way.
And, uh, we'll see how it goes.
It's gonna take a lot of energy
Because the bamboo is massive.
That is a solid... Solid peg.
[molly] that's a solid y.
[nathan] that is not going
to break apart.
[tense music playing]
[nathan] we can use the
crab holes to our advantage
Instead of digging,
we can just do this.
[pounding]
Just going down the crab hole.
There we go.
So I built a, uh,
large fence on my homestead
That covers...
That surrounds an acre,
And what you do instead
of packing it as you go
You drive it in
as far as possible
And then you put rocks
on the inside next to it.
And then you put dirt
because it creates
A really secure like connection.
[molly] cool.
So this is as far in
as its going?
For sure.
I'll give it a whack.
[tongue clicks] shoot.
Splitting.
Would you mind
reinforce all of this
By that split with, um,
With the cordage that we have?
Sure.
That's pretty, pretty easy.
The crabs did most
of the work for us.
[tense music playing]
[birds chirping]
Oh. My hands are getting
tired of this choppin'
I tell you what...
Tag out.
Wanna bevel this?
Yup.
[nathan]
once we get this peg in
We get to have our coconuts.
Wew!
[nathan] would you mind
doing it on a raised thing
Because the tip is just
eating dirt and dulls it.
Oh, yeah.
And we have...
I'm just super, super,
super, super, like...
- Because this is rolling off?
- I want my blade to be sharp
If I jump on top of a caiman
And then the tip is not sharp.
It's not gonna pierce its skull
And I'm gonna have a real,
Real disaster on my hands.
[molly] I feel like
this is rolling,
I can cut my finger off.
[nathan] here I can do it.
No, no, no, I'm good.
[nathan] just like I said
I'm gonna take over
If it keeps hitting the dirt
Because I can't stress enough
how important it is
To keep the tip
from being dulled.
I am extremely particular
About the order
in which I do things
And the manner
in which I do things
Because I try to be
as scientific, and unbiased,
And unemotional about the things
That I'm doing as possible.
[sighs]
If I know better I know better,
If they know better,
then they know better.
And if they can show me that
Then I will accept it.
But if they can't,
Then it's going to be my way.
Let's go cut down some bamboo.
Perfect.
You can actually tend
the fire and the water
For the first half
And then when I do some I can...
And then get tired
I'll come back and...
- Okay. Trade up?
- [nathan] we'll switch.
Cool.
Nathan has a lot of opinions
About how things need to go
Based on his experience
on his homestead,
Having worked
in the outdoor industry
I'm definitely no stranger
to mansplaining,
But it's getting
a little irksome.
His need to strong arm
the situation,
[grunts]
[molly] teamwork
makes the dream work
And I feel like we could
accelerate the process
A bit better
if we were on the same page.
Yow.
Sub. Time out.
Um, wait until I get
a couple more
- And then can you chop 'em?
- Yes.
Just after this next pot boils.
Yeah. So it's on
and the fire's stoked.
And I need to do something
other than that.
What's that?
So I've pretty much been
tending to the fire
And you've been
over exerting yourself.
- I'm not overexerting myself.
- [molly] and I wanna...
- Talk about...
- We have a time...
Team work is the dream work.
I know. I know.
And...
[nathan]
and that's why you can...
- We should communicate and...
- [nathan] listen.
That's why I'm communicating
to you...
Divide our labor better.
This is why I'm communicating
to you right now.
I need to get two more of these
And you can chop it up,
It's gonna be 20 more minutes.
So I'm just going
to let you know that
And that's how it is, okay?
[molly] your way
or the highway, okay.
I didn't come here
to just keep the fire going,
It's not all of the skills
that I have
And it's starting
to get pretty frustrating.
[tense music playing]
[nathan grunts]
Oh, [bleep].
[bleep].
[bleep] giant thorns.
[grunts]
I do extremely dangerous
And challenging activities
on a daily basis
And if someone wants
to come along
I am the captain
and they are the first mate
And there's no other way
to do it
Because until someone
can prove to me
That they can do the task
that I'm attempting
In a more efficient way
I'm not going to allow them
to do it before me.
Honestly...
This is my second
to last one I've done
All the work already.
If she wants to help
she can chop
20 minutes isn't gonna kill her.
It would take her
a couple hours to do this.
[sighs]
[tense music playing]
Thank you for waiting
30 minutes.
Here are the, uh...
It's the measuring stick
and the machete tapped in.
Okay.
Take a load off.
Yes, indeed.
[tense music playing]
[pounding]
I definitely feel like natha
Is trying to dominate
the situation.
I also think he has
a personality type
That cannot deviate
from what his vision is.
I'm not gonna sit out there
And argue with him
And expend energy in that way.
I'm not trying to create
a rift this early,
But I'm not feeling like
I've got a true team player,
Um, and a partner right now.
[bleep].
[molly] oh, wow,
that really cut, huh?
That was the bamboo.
I'm chopping bamboo,
Of course, I'm being extra
careful with a machete
For safety purposes
but also, uh,
So as not to dull the blade.
And the bamboo on one
As I pull it away slices my toe.
And so now,
I've got an open wound
On the bottom of my foot.
Probably the worst place
For what we're doing out here.
Hey, is there any
of that water left?
- There is.
- [molly] okay.
I'm about to fill up another.
I'm actually just
gonna use a little
To clean out my toe,
That, uh, a piece of bamboo
- Cut my toe.
- Oh.
So I need to irrigate that out.
I'm gonna go fill this up
and get more water.
[molly] okay.
[nathan] let me know
if you need anything.
[molly] okay. Thanks.
Dang.
Blood trail.
I really hope
that doesn't get infected.
This is literally why
I wanted to do it.
Oh my god, are you kidding me?
Oh.
[tense music playing]
[molly] I've done some
primitive wrapping of wounds
Before definitely my training
As a wilderness first responder
Where you're taught
to improvise what you have
On you and what's around yo
in the field.
To make splints
out of bark or sticks,
To keep things clean
and properly dressed,
And avoid infection
at all costs.
Feels pretty good...
For now.
[tense music playing]
Is the toe okay?
Um, it's a pretty
deep cut, but...
- Ooh.
- I was able to irrigate it
And wrap it.
So it's feeling good right now.
I'm glad to hear that.
[molly] shall we start
laying these across?
[nathan] I think so, yeah.
Would you do that
super secure tie that you do?
Yes.
[molly] it hasn't been grea
working together today,
But I think we've kind of
leveled out
To a point where we're able
to get this piece done.
So I guess we'll do
the big ones on that side,
And then move
to the smaller ones as we go,
So it stays regular
instead of being bumpy.
Yeah, that makes sense.
I still want to work
together with nathan.
I think if we can move
through this,
We can still have
a very successful partnership
And a very successful challenge.
But I definitely need us
to get on the same page.
[nathan] would you like
your last coconut?
I'm about to crack mine.
Sure. Thank you.
I think more coconuts tomorrow
Is a pretty big priority
Because if we could get, like,
Five to ten more, I think that,
That would be a life changer...
- Yeah.
- Right now.
[molly] calories, hydration,
electrolytes.
And then we can bring back
all the big ones
And probably try to ration
ourselves to one each a day.
Yeah. I think so.
Well, looks like we're going
to the beach tomorrow.
- Beach day.
- Beach day!
[tense music playing]
[molly] the end of day two.
Check out our cool
new enclosure tonight,
- So we can hopefully get...
- Yeah. We got...
We're gonna get
12 hours of sleep.
We're stylin'.
Yeah. We're getting
12 hours of sleep tonight.
We've been pretty productive
And we need to just chill out.
All right. Big plans,
But big sleeps tonight.
- Buenas noches.
- Buenas noches.
[tense music playing]
Oh [bleep].
[foreboding music playing]
- [molly] whoa!
- Well, it's a little tiny
- Bit of protein.
- [molly] we got a meal.
It's not a lot,
but it's not nothing.
[molly] hey, it's something.
Not a bad start to the morning.
[molly] not at all.
Even though its legs
are eating me.
After our little blowup
yesterday,
Molly and I have been
getting along really well.
My strategy
for conflict resolution
Might not be the healthiest
But I'm just pretending
it didn't happen
And I'm trying to just
focus on the biggest,
Most dire problems,
which are calories, shelter.
That's all I really care about,
And I think that
she also cares about that.
So here's a very small,
But not inconsequential meal
of frog legs.
[molly] nice. Getting
a little bit of protein
Will help us through
today's excursion.
It might seem crazy to go back
To the original insertion beach,
But I know that
there were more resources
Than I could carry originally,
So we hope to come back
with a bounty of fruits
And useful materials.
Oh, that's really good,
it tastes like chicken.
Mmm-hmm.
[nathan] that was a good gram
or two of protein.
Mmm-hmm.
Now, that breakfast
is all wrapped up...
[molly] mmm-hmm.
Time for a pilgrimage of sorts.
Yeah, back to the beginning.
Our humble beginnings.
[tense music playing]
[nathan] slow and steady.
Yeah.
I'm a little bit anxious
About the hike
to the beach today
Because we probably
should be working
On getting a roof
on our shelter,
But hopefully,
We can collect some resources
That will help fuel us
for the next several days,
So that we can focus
and prioritize the shelter.
[tense music playing]
[nathan] that just sounded
like a caiman
Moving in the water.
[tense music playing]
[nathan] oh, my god.
[tense music playing]
That just sounded like
a caiman moving in the water.
[suspenseful music playing]
[nathan] oh, yeah,
that was a caiman.
[molly] it was.
It was a little
baby caiman. Well...
[molly] scampering back up
to its den.
We know they're in here, then.
And I know they have
a den up there.
Leave that for another day.
Now I know there's caiman
for sure in there,
Just as I suspected.
[tense music playing]
[bird screeches]
I can't wait
to get in that water.
This feels amazing.
We make it to the beach
And the first thing I do
Is go straight into the ocean.
And nathan's preparing
to climb a coconut tree
To get some of the coconuts
down for us.
[grunts]
[molly] nice.
[nathan] ouch.
[panting]
That was a lot easier
on day one,
I'll tell you that.
Would you like to open your own?
Sure.
- Oh.
- Ooh.
It's still good, still good.
Cheers.
Cheers.
To giant coconuts.
Oh, yeah.
Molly and I are feasting
on coconut
And it is incredible.
Every part of me is happy
That we made this
extreme pilgrimage.
All of my doubts
about whether or not
It was a good idea
just evaporated.
Look at that.
Plums, I don't know
their scientific name.
Got the goodies. Icaco.
As if this day
couldn't get better.
When we were contemplating
this journey,
I was hoping
to at least breakeven
With our calorie deficit,
But this has turned into
Literally a cornucopia.
Yum.
Bountiful beach harvest.
Icaco and a whole gang
of coconut.
We are absolutely killing it.
This is feeling really,
really good.
These icaco will help fuel us
for the hike back.
Good job. High five.
Whoa.
[nathan] oh, there's a crab
right there.
[molly] oh, get it.
Having a lot of rest today
is very important
Because we've been burning
the candle at both ends
And we need to just relax
and recuperate
Because this is a marathon,
not a sprint.
[suspenseful music playing]
- Yes!
- [molly] did you get it?
- Yes!
- [molly] oh!
[bleep] yeah!
- Yes!
- Breakfast.
First crab. We can eat crab...
[molly] oh, yeah.
We can cook them up.
- [molly] yes!
- Could you believe
That I snuck up on him?
Did you see how slow I went?
- Amazing.
- Oh, my god.
- Yes.
- First crab on the board.
[molly] yeah.
[bleep] yes!
- Mmm-hmm.
- This is amazing.
So good.
The air feels moist.
Mmm-hmm.
I'm thinking, like,
We could cut down
a bunch of banana leaves
For the platform.
I know that we need
the rest today,
But I am a little anxious
about the weather
That could be moving towards us.
We're gonna collect
some banana leaves
And kind of layer
And lay them down
over the platform.
And if need be, we would
attempt to hunker down
Underneath the platform itself.
[nathan] isn't that a nice
amount of paneling?
- [molly] yeah, it's great.
- I think that that, plus that,
I think that we might be
able to stay dry.
Which would be crucial.
Do your worst, colombia,
do your worst.
[dramatic music playing]
[monkey chirping]
This is the beginning
of our setup
Of our coverage shelter.
And put all this on top of it,
Hopefully help it drain.
This is all the firewood
for the night.
Molly and I are going to be
On the opposite side of that,
Just with barely
any space for us.
It's gonna be a wild night,
I feel the rain coming, and...
[sighs] I wish we could
just have a day to chill,
But it is a challenge,
And that's why they call it
a challenge.
[thunder rumbling]
- Yup.
- Uh-oh.
[thunder rumbling]
[nathan] oh, yeah.
[nathan speaking]
Yeah.
- Get under there?
- Yeah.
Oh, my god!
The storm has hit
and we are under our shelter.
We have a fire,
But it is leaking on our butts.
So we're not dry,
but at least...
- Not entirely.
- Our fire is still going...
Yeah.
- So that's...
- We got...
The most important thing
right now,
And we're just hoping
that it holds.
We've got hope in that.
It's gonna be a long night.
It's gonna be a long night.
[thunder rumbling]
[tense music playing]
We did have rain last night
And we ended up on the ground,
under the platform.
Let's just use a touch
of this to get it humming.
I just need to step away
from it for a second
Because it's making me feel
really sick.
It's warm and dry,
But we've had the fire
pretty far underneath there
To preserve it.
The smoke was kind of
hanging back in the area
That we were camped under,
And I just feel like
It's making me feel ill today.
So I really would like
to finish getting the roof
Up on the shelter.
I'm gonna go back over
to that clearing
And see if I can grab the bamboo
That we already have down there,
And bring it back up here,
So we can start
shaping things out.
Modifying the current platform
to include a roof structure.
Before you get too far
along with that,
Consider for a second
that I was up all night
Tending the fire
because during the rain,
It has to be fed all the time,
you know?
If we build a roof
for a shelter,
We can't put the fire
under the platform,
So we need to build a new
fire protection structure.
If we have the fire
in a separate structure,
We're going to have to be
getting up to feed it,
As opposed to laying down
and feeding it.
Essentially, we'll be
making it more difficult
To tend the fire.
You basically have to choose
either getting up
Every time to feed the fire
or some smoke inhalation,
Which your body will adapt to.
It's... I just...
That's not something
that I really want to chance
With my asthma, so...
Yeah. But I've been the one
tending to the fire at night
For every night so far.
So I'm telling you,
I'm not okay with doing that
every night
And you making it more
difficult for me to do that,
Just because
you're telling me, like,
You're taking a stand
on your principle of health,
I understand that,
and I respect that.
But, this structure functions,
And you can go ahead
And process that one
all you like,
But I'm not going
to help you do something
That makes it harder
for me to survive.
Yeah.
And if we have to stay
under here again tonight,
That's fine.
But we need to get off
the ground
With a roof over our heads.
I'm just really concerned
that we're, like,
Heading into day five
And we still don't have,
like, our full structure.
I know,
but it's fully up to you.
If you wanna go at the machete
At that stuff all day long,
then be my guest,
I'm not gonna stop you.
But I'm just bringing up,
Like, my concerns
because I have also been,
Like, putting myself
with sleep exhaustion,
Physical stuff through equal
Or more rigorous things
than you have.
So I'm in the same boat
as you...
[molly] mmm-hmm.
But I just think that besides
the smoke inhalation,
The structure
didn't leak at all,
And it maintained the fire,
So I would prefer
to just focus on calories,
So I just... I just wanna
voice my concerns,
But go ahead and process away.
Yeah. I know. I just wanna
keep making progress.
Sounds good.
[molly] I don't know
why nathan is okay
With the way
that the shelter is,
And what he's saying about
the fire doesn't make sense
[sighs]
I'm trying to just maintain
Some level of partnership
When we disagree on things
But I also recognize that
Nathan is a personality typ
That there's probably not
A whole lot of reasoning with.
And knowing that,
I feel like I'm just trying
to navigate around it.
You want to tend fire
while I go walk
On a caiman run?
Okay.
I'm going to focus
on getting calories
Because the structure met
All of my criteria last night.
So I'm very, very confident
In another night
in that structure
Even if it is torrential
downpours
And thunderstorms again.
Okay. I'm out to scout
the caiman.
[molly] all right. Good luck.
Thank you.
Nathan has all these
grand plans of hunting caima
And runs off with the machete.
So now, there's not
a lot I could do
To make progress on the shelter
And that's frustrating for sure.
[suspenseful music playing]
Oh, limes.
Not many calories
but I'll take it.
Also, win already.
I am just masterful
at hunting and gathering.
Oh, my gosh. Fish.
I think that molly
is just out of her element.
For me to teach molly
to perceive the environment
In the way that I am
that is allowing me
To be so hyper-successful
in my gathering of calories,
It would take at least
five years of training.
Big old fish
But that means there's caiman
in here for sure
Because if there's
those big fish,
It's feeding on fish I bet.
It's not something
that you learn overnight.
It's like a...
It's an awareness
And presence of mind
that one in a hundred,
If not, one in a thousand have.
This is the area at night
Where the caiman will be.
Cool.
[suspenseful music playing]
Is that a little fruit
right there?
Oh, my god. These are dates.
[scoffs]
Dates are a very high
calorie food
So that would be
a score of the century
If these are dates.
This had been a pretty
Fruitful endeavor... [laughs]
I got to stop
with these dad jokes.
[suspenseful music playing]
- [molly] what are those?
- Found some interesting stuff.
[molly] yeah?
[nathan] no caiman
unfortunately but...
I found these weird
date-like things.
They look like dates.
But they smell, kind of, weird
and ants were eating them
So that means there's sugar
in them like, but...
Oh, yeah. It, kind of, smell
like, uh, cucumber.
- Yeah. Right?
- Yeah.
And the best thing of all,
I found...
Drum roll, limes.
Amazing. Oh, my gosh.
- [nathan] isn't that cool?
- Can we eat one now?
[nathan] of course.
There's... There's plenty.
Too bad there's not that many
calories in it but...
[molly] I know, but it'll...
Just like the flavor,
- You know...
- [nathan] yeah.
[molly] will help.
Hmm. The fragrance.
Isn't it crazy
how much things smell?
[molly] I know.
Especially when you're hungry.
That's what I mean.
It's like, it heightens your...
[molly] yeah. All your senses.
Hmm.
[nathan] we should probably
start gathering firewood
For the night because
we're gonna need a lot,
Or it's gonna be
a really cold night.
You can hear the thunder.
- Yeah.
- I really hope
It doesn't visit us
but just based on the sky,
It looks like it's going to.
[thunder rumbles]
- [nathan speaking]
- [molly speaking]
[nathan speaking]
Wish us luck, um...
It kind of helps... [laughs]
Yeah... [laughs]
This is not very, uh, fun
But, uh, that's not
what we signed up for.
[nathan] holy [bleep]
The rain put us in our shelter
Really early yesterday night,
Like, two or three hours
before sunset.
So we've been in our shelter
For about 15 hours.
The sun's finally
about to arrive.
I think, thank god
because I am tired
Of laying down the shelter,
Just waiting, and waiting,
and waiting.
Luckily, I got some pretty
decent sleep but...
Oh. Sure hope this rain stops.
It's just so miserable.
[dramatic music playing]
[blowing]
So what is your plan
for the shelter?
I'm gonna throw
a couple more planks
On the edge here
And then just a-frame above it
And, kind of, fill in
with leaves and branches
And stuff like that.
[nathan] got you.
[molly] it was another nigh
on the ground
Under the platform
And so after a few days
Of trying to make progress
on the shelter together,
I'm just deciding
to build my own
At the other end temporarily
And hopefully, we can later
Work together on the more
permanent structure.
So in making, um,
your own shelter,
It's going to create
a couple logistical issues.
Um, one of them being
We're gonna have to maintain
two fires,
Which is going to make
the firewood even more scarce.
I'm thinking I might just
Make it more insulated
With plant material
And not have the fire.
You don't think that's gonna
create a bug problem?
I think, like, temporarily,
it's fine.
Every time I do try
To bring in a plan
Towards making progress on this,
Nathan has some reason
why we shouldn't
Be focusing on that right now.
I'm over his micromanaging
So I am just going
to respectfully
Do it on my own.
I was thinking about
going to start
Gathering materials
in a little bit.
Got the fire going,
Freshwater.
Let's just get
one piece of bamboo
And switch other piece...
We can get a piece
of bamboo switch...
Okay. So you wanna build
the shelter now?
I wanna get all
of the materials here first
And then once
everything is here,
Then we can start
to construct the roof,
- Okay?
- Okay.
Last time that
she tried to do something
With the blade and the bamboo,
She cut herself
so I am 99.9% sure
That if I delegate the task
Of finishing the shelter to her
While I hunt,
which is what I wanna do,
That she is going
to probably end up
Hurting herself again
And not making it
through the 21 days.
So I'm helping molly
with the structure.
[chuckles]
Off with a bang.
[dramatic music playing]
[nathan] it's your turn now
if you wanna
Finish the chopping.
Suddenly, it's nathan's idea
To start gathering materials
to finish the roof
On our platform to make it
a more substantial shelter.
I'm finding a pattern of where
He has to make the idea
Sound like it's coming from him.
So I'm just, kind of,
placating at this point.
So I just think it's funny
And frustrating
at the same time,
But what are you gonna do?
I'm just gonna keep my head up
And keep moving.
I'm not gonna be
able to really do
much more of this tonight
Because we have to gather
A significant amount of firewood
Just to make it
through the night
Because the sky is graying
And it looks like
it might rain again so...
All right.
I'm gonna grab some materials
To just do my own thing
At the other end for the night.
Are you gonna split them?
No. Just lash a couple poles
And just a-frame up from there.
Make sure to keep
the, uh, pot boiling
Because I'm about
to go on a caiman walk.
Yeah. Sure.
Because we need to have water.
You know, water is
a real big priority.
Like, your shelter
and everything is, like,
Important to you but we have
to, like, stay team-minded,
- You know...
- Yeah. I hear you.
I can boil the water.
Working on my temporary
shelter for the night,
Got a later start than expected
Since we're apparently
not on schedule
To get the structure
up again today,
But trying to make
some headway right now.
- How'd it go?
- No caiman.
[nathan speaking]
Yeah. But I'm trying
not to modify
The, uh, bamboo that we have
For the other.
I'm just doing
what I can right now.
[molly] yeah.
Are we planning to...
Finish the structure tomorrow?
I mean, we're gonna work on it.
I don't know. It just...
It takes longer than I think
That you imagine,
just like you thought
It was gonna be done today.
Like, I knew
it wasn't gonna happen.
[molly] okay.
But I just wanna be able
To plan for if
I should work on my own thing
- Or if we're gonna get...
- Well, I mean,
If you wanna just continuously
work on your own thing
Then we're just going
to start working
On our own stuff, period.
Because you are wasting
calories right now
For nothing
that has to do with team.
This is all for you.
And it's not even a good plan.
It's not gonna work. Period.
- Just not.
- [molly] I'm just...
I know you're frustrated.
I know but...
No, no, no.
Because I'm working
for both of us right now.
I've worked for both of us
this entire time.
If you're gonna start
- Doing stuff on your own...
- Dude...
And not working for the team...
[molly] can you listen?
I've been working
For the team as well.
Your idea is always
the right idea.
I mean, but look at yours.
Okay. So I have less time
Than I thought I was going to...
Yes. So that's what
I'm saying. So if your plan
Doesn't work, it doesn't work.
I'm not gonna...
I'm not gonna indulge
your fantasy anymore.
- If you want...
- Indulge my fantasy?
You had a fantasy
that this would work.
- It doesn't work. So...
- Okay.
I knew it wasn't going to work.
- Nathan...
- And you didn't...
- You are...
- There we are.
Nathan, everything
that I bring up,
You undermined and condescend.
In what way?
I have brought up
that I would like
To make more progress
on our shelter
For the entire time
that we've been here.
We're a week in.
- We're a week in.
- We are six days in
- Right now and we spent...
- And I'm coming...
The whole day of day six
working on it.
Can you let me finish, please?
You just don't make any sense.
- Dude.
- You literally...
You are condescending me
As I'm trying to explain to you.
So I feel like you are
consistently undermining
When I bring up an idea.
Give me some other examples.
Every other time
I brought up that we need
To fill out our shelter.
What day? When I was just
gathering all the food?
Come on...
I've been trying to get you
to come to the table
- And it's impossible.
- I already did.
Look at the bamboo.
See, I didn't wanna
do that today.
I did it because
you asked for it.
So don't ask like I'm not
coming to the table. No, no.
I'm not going to act
like I'm in the wrong here.
If you think in some fantasy
in your mind that
You have done more than half
the work thus far,
It is unbelievable to me.
- Dude.
- I am sorry
- But I am doing more...
- I'm trying to affix your...
- No.
- Every time I tried to do
- Something for us...
- Explain what?
All you said is the shelter
And we've been working
on the shelter.
We haven't really.
- We've done that.
- It's been you domineering
- Every part of this.
- Well, this is the thing.
Because I have gotten
95% of the calories.
- Okay.
- So I have gotten...
Because you were like, okay,
I need you to stay here
And tend to the fire.
I tend to the fire
more than you.
- You are delusional.
- During the day...
During the day...
You are delusional. No.
I am 50/50 on the fire.
I get more water than you.
I literally do everything
more than you.
You need to step it up
or you need to listen.
Those are your only choices.
Or we can continue
the challenge completely apart
And that is perfectly
fine with me.
You are not rationally
Thinking about any of this.
And you're about to have
a really rude wakeup call
If you don't change your tone.
- You are delusional.
- During the day...
No, you are delusional.
No. I am 50/50 on the fire.
I get more water than you.
I literally do everything
more than you.
You need to step it up
or you need to listen.
Those are your only choices.
Or we can continue
the challenge completely apart
And that is perfectly fine
with me.
You are not rationally
Thinking about any of this.
And you're about to have
a really rude wakeup call
If you don't change your tone.
I appreciate you
sharing it with me.
No, you don't.
You're... Well, you better.
You better appreciate it
And you better change your tone
Or it's over from now on.
You are wrong
about all of the things
That you have said,
except for the fact
That I am calling
most of the shots
Because I am more
competent, period.
Do not diminish what I've done
- Because I have done...
- I'm not diminishing
- What you've done.
- More than anyone
In this challenge has ever done
In the first week, period.
- Okay.
- No. No.
- Not okay.
- What?
If you wanna continue
gaining the benefit
Of getting 50%
of what I have gotten,
Then you better
change your tone.
I don't care
if I come off condescending
Slightly at points.
It's because my ideas
at this point,
Unfortunately, have been better.
I'm not going to pretend
that they haven't.
You're out of your element
and it's obvious.
Dude, you don't have to be rude.
- No. You are being rude.
- I'm not being rude.
You're biting the hand
that feeds.
- Yes, you are.
- Dude.
You are biting the hand
that feeds.
[eerie music playing]
Anyway, so I'm gonna try
to get some rest.
[foreboding music playing]
[molly]
I had a pretty negative
Encounter with nathan.
And it's really made me question
Whether I wanna continue
with this challenge.
I kind of feel like
I'm moving in slow motion.
I'm like tired from not sleeping
And emotionally drained.
I don't really know
what I wanna do.
And I feel like
I'm kind of wandering.
My ability to perform
Wilderness survival
Shouldn't be contingent on
My dealing with
A toxic personality
like nathan's.
And so I think that's what
I'm struggling with right now.
Cordage.
I'm pulling down
some vining plants
To use the vine as cordage
To weave a fishing basket
That I'm going to attempt
to create today.
I want doing a task like this,
Creating something,
Going out
and exploring to, like,
Take my mind off things.
But it hasn't really.
It's almost noon.
It's been like
Four and a half hours.
I have to assume molly
is not coming back though.
I'm not sure if she tapped,
Not sure if she's left her
fire starter for me.
Right now,
I'm pretty frustrated.
What the serious [bleep]?
[dramatic music playing]
So what's going on?
Um, I'm just doing
My own thing right now.
Got you.
All right.
Well, let's just continue
doing that.
I'll do my own thing,
you do your own thing.
I kind of wanna find a more
Off-the-path location.
It's difficult to separate
The toxic situation
here with nathan,
From the reasons
why I wanted to be here
Because even if we do go
our separate ways,
We're still in the same area
Sometimes
the best survival skill
Is to remove yourself
from a toxic situation.
Nice, flesh already developed.
I feel relieved.
I'm doing my own thing.
But I'm also a bit anxious
Because I don't know
If I'm going to have
to maintain this fire
For the rest of the challeng
without any fire starter,
So it puts
a lot of pressure on me
Because if the fire goes out,
I'm going to be between
a rock and a hard space.
[molly] right now,
I'm giving serious consideration
To whether or not I wanna tap.
And it's not an easy decisio
to make at all
But everything
in my body right now
Is telling me to go.
I'm just trying to give tha
A consideration that it's due.
I didn't anticipate
that this would be
My most challenging point
of this,
But here we are.
Here is my new
temporary shelter.
I'm staying out here
for the night,
On a bed of iroko leaves,
Which is actually quite
comfortable I should say.
More comfortable than the dirt.
This is where I'm going to do
A lot of thinking
about my next steps.
I just still pretty shaken.
[dramatic music playing]
As difficult a decision
as this has been to make,
I feel like...
I feel like staying true
to myself
And understanding
that I'm allowed
To give myself grace,
Even in situations like this,
To act on my inner knowing
Is really important.
What's going on, molly?
Hey.
I wanna tap out.
Okay. If that's
your final decision,
I'll get a car
and we'll get you out of here.
Okay. Yeah.
That's what I'd like.
I'm sad to leave.
I'm disappointed in
Not finishing what I set out to.
I'm a strong person
with strong skills
But everyone reaches
their breaking point
And this fight with nathan
made me reach mine.
- Hey, nathan.
- Yes?
I wanna let you know
that your partner molly
Has decided to tap today.
I don't know if you wanna say
any last words to her
Before she heads out.
I sincerely doubt that
she wants to hear from me,
To be perfectly honest with you.
I'm not going to say
that I was wrong
About the things that I said,
It's the way that I said them
that was wrong
And I don't think
that that's an apology
That she's going to wanna hear.
I mean, I guess saying sorry
couldn't hurt.
- Hey, molly.
- Hey.
Heard that you're tapping.
I just wanted to say
before you go
That I'm really sorry
for overreacting
And it wasn't right of me
at all.
And when I feel criticized,
I overreact often and pop off
and it's not right,
And it's something
that I have to work on,
And I just want to say that
I'm genuinely sorry for that.
And you didn't deserve that.
Thank you.
I appreciate that apology.
- Fire starter?
- Thank you.
I appreciate it.
Definitely.
And good luck.
Enjoy getting back to the city.
Mmm-hmm.
- Bye.
- Bye.
I'm surprised that
he came with the apology.
I would like to believe
that that was sincere.
Aside from the conflict
with nathan,
I feel I was very capable
Of enduring the elements,
Enduring
the physical discomforts.
I wasn't necessarily
afforded the chance
To really realize
all of my skills
But that's for another time.
This has been
a hard decision to make
But knowing my self-worth
Is more important
than this challenge.
And I'm worth more
Than how I was treated
And I think it does take
a strong person
To walk away
from a situation like this.
[narrator] after eight days
molly exits the challenge.
Her psr drops
From 6.7 to 5.9.
Ready to get to work
on improving my shelter.
Going to build the fire
awning right here
That will connect with my...
The bed of the shelter.
And it will be large enough
such that
Before I finish the roof
for the shelter,
If rain comes,
I'll be able to just sleep
Under the fire awning
with the fire.
Now that molly's gone,
it's just way easier for me
To get down to business
And to work on the improvements
That I need to work on.
I have a really strong game plan
For the next 12 days.
My plans for today are to build
A new fire protection structure.
Ten more to go.
Possibly tomorrow, I am going
to go back to the beach
And I'm gonna climb the trees
and get some more coconuts.
It's gonna be really,
really trying day
But the upside of that
is I'm going to have
Coconuts until about day 15, 16,
At which time I'm just goin
to fast out the rest of it.
I think it's gonna be
a good 12 days
But we'll see
what colombia throws at me.
I'm pretty well set up
right now.
Once I get my coconuts tomorrow,
There's nothing stopping me
from getting to day 21.
[dramatic music playing]
Here goes nothing.
I'm feeling good.
Now that molly's gone,
I just have to feed
one person, myself.
So I am going to go back
to the beach
And I'm gonna climb the tree
and get some more coconuts.
This is gonna be treacherous
But the caloric gain from it
Is going to be well worth it.
Oh my gosh.
Jobo fruit.
Oh, yeah, there's so many.
Fudge yes.
God, I love it.
I'm gonna fuel up
on some jobo fruit.
Give me some energy.
Based on my research,
these jobo fruit
Taste like a mixture
between a lime and a mango.
They're a little bit bitter
And some of them are fermented.
Bugs.
There are plenty.
This is huge.
Looking for the firmer ones
That haven't been scavenged
by bugs yet.
Should be good for now.
And that's how
you get ticks 101.
But it's also how you get
a bag full of jobo fruit.
I'm gonna snack on these
on the journey.
It's gonna give me glycogen
to get up those trees.
[dramatic music playing]
Almost just walked face
first into a spider web.
Wow, that jobo fruit
really pumped me up.
I can feel just energy
coursing through my veins.
Right when I get to the beach,
my first priority
Is gonna be looking
for coconuts on the ground.
I hear the ocean roaring,
so I must be close.
It's the first view
of the ocean I've had
In about six days.
Sure does look beautiful.
This is my first time doing
the insertion hike solo.
Means that I can go
on my own pace
But it also means
I have to take the burden
All onto myself
to get everything back
And makes me
a little bittersweet
About the whole situation.
And I'm glad I apologized
but part of me
Wishes she was here right now.
[dramatic music playing]
Right up here is the first
moderately sized coconut tree
That I could see
myself climbing.
I'm gonna go scout
and see if I can traverse
The landscape up to it,
but it looks pretty rough
And there's not a path
of any sort, so...
Here goes nothing.
[tense music playing]
Looks like a sprouted coconut.
Oh, my god, these are all
sprouted coconuts.
[narrator] coconut sprouts
contain an edible
Sponge like flesh
that is rich in carbohydrate
And slightly sweet.
Oh, my god, if this is... Ow!
Something just bit me.
If this is what I think it is,
Then I'm going to have
an abundance,
But they might be too far.
Ouch.
Ouch. [bleep] wasp.
Ow.
God. [bleep]
Okay, there's a wasp hive
that lives on this coconut.
Ouch, that hurt,
But I've already gotten
like five or six stings,
So I'm not gonna quit now.
I'm gonna see
what's in that coconut.
Mama didn't raise a quitter.
No pain no gain.
Get the...
[tense music playing]
Ah.
Damn you.
[grunts]
Looks like I win this round.
No bueno.
That wasn't worth it.
It doesn't look like
much is here.
I'm gonna go check the next tree
And see what dangers await me.
Holy moly.
That's the mother lode up there.
Oh, joy rhapsody.
Yes.
Now I have to decide if I wanna
Make all my climbing
into one coconut tree,
Because that's about 15 coconuts
But it's very treacherous
and difficult.
Oh, man, that's high.
If I fall from this tree,
I'm definitely gonna
be auto tapped
With some serious injury,
But if I climb up this one tree,
It saves me climbing
a dozen more
To find the same thing,
so go big or go home,
That's what I always say.
[tense music playing]
[panting]
Oh, god.
Oh, my god.
I dropped my machete.
[bleep]
Ouch.
[grunts]
Oh, god.
[whimsical music playing]
[nathan] molly has discovere
that covering her body
With ash seems
to be working against bugs.
So I'm gonna get all greased up.
- [molly] ashy.
- Do I look pretty?
[molly] yeah.
- [nathan] nice.
- We're stylin',
Because ash is really
our friend right now.
- Yes, it is.
- [laughs]
It honestly
is making it so the bugs
Are completely gone,
which is, like...
- Yeah.
- [molly] yes.
[nathan] if you're having
bug problems, I feel...
[both] bad for you son.
Got 99 problems but...
- Bugs ain't one.
- Insect ain't one.
[laughter]
- Hit me.
- Hit me.
[tense music playing]
Oh, my god.
I dropped my machete.
[bleep]
Ouch.
[panting]
Oh, man.
That got me real bad.
I had to slide all the way down.
I was too tired to climb.
Ouch. That's real pain
right there.
Man, I don't know if I can climb
Anymore today, that's awful.
Now I got to find the machete
Before I leave or I'm screwed.
The worst part is,
I don't know where it went.
That's the price you pay
for going big.
Ouch!
Ouch!
And ouch!
Where the [bleep] is my machete?
Oh, here it is. Yes.
Had to [bleep] trip on it.
Thank god not all is lost.
Oh, wow.
Ouch.
Well, that was a stupid idea.
[dramatic music playing]
Ouch.
Ouch!
Oh, my god, there's
a giant coconut right there.
I might go back
with some coconuts after all.
I have to see.
Water.
Bringing back these coconuts
it's gonna be hard,
Both my feet
are completely torn.
Every step I take
chafes between my legs
And my chest is raw.
Anything that touches it
is agony
Literally, like, agony.
[grunts]
Oh, god,
I need to get back so bad.
[dramatic music playing]
Yeah, it's like rotten.
Oh, that's disappointing.
I just hacked through
this coconut
And it took me 20 minutes
and a lot of energy
To hack through it
and it's really bad.
Back at square one.
Oh, man, what a day.
I hope that I can get
some sleep tonight
Despite the pain.
It must be,
I don't know,
3:00 am or something.
My rub burn
from that coconut tree
Is just agonizingly painfully.
It just kept me up all night.
Oh, I just need some sleep.
But I can't get comfortable
Because I can't move my legs,
But come hell or high water,
I'm gonna get through it.
I'm gonna tough it out.
What else can I do?
Ahh.
[tense music playing]
[nathan] [blows air]
Please just light on fire.
Ouch!
God, kneeling down
and getting up
Has been so bad on my scabs,
It's just tearing them so much.
[grunts]
God, I'm in so much pain
right now.
[sighs]
Today has been the hardest
day for me by far.
Fire has been really hard
to start,
And the thing that's making it
the hardest
Is I have these really,
really bad rashes
On the side of my legs.
They're really, really severe.
Every time I move,
it's straight up agony.
Oh, my god, ow...
[sighs]
[groaning]
[bleep] it hurts, man.
Okay.
I'm gonna go get some water.
Ow!
I can do this.
I'm doing it.
Doing it right now.
Despite all the pain.
Oh, man, my balls hurt.
This is awful.
Oh, my god, this is rough.
And my water looks grosser
and grosser every day.
Something as simple
as going to get water
Just takes a lot of willpowe
and determination,
Because every step I take
splits my scabs
Will open wide and
to bend over for the water,
Just makes it even worse,
So it's really hard
doing just basic tasks.
[thunder rumbles]
[nathan]
the wood is incredibly wet.
I've been tending it
for the last hour.
I can't get it
a bigger flame than that.
Every time that I bend over
it's agonizingly painful.
I have to keep bending over
to blow into it.
So if it rains,
I'm not gonna have a fire
for a few days,
Because I'm out of dry wood
after tonight.
[thunder rumbling]
This is awful.
There's no way
I can even boil water
On a flame like this.
[tense music playing]
That rainstorm came out
of literally nowhere.
If it wasn't hard before.
Ah.
[coughs]
Dammit.
[bleep] fire.
Oh, my god.
[tense music playing]
Dammit.
It's day 11 today,
I'm in huge pain.
My biggest worry today
Is that my wounds get infected.
They have developed
a slight odor.
But there's nothing else
I can do.
I just have to be patient
and let my body heal itself.
And I really hope
that it doesn't take too long.
I should have been working
on my shelter.
I could have spent my time
better and I didn't.
I just don't wanna deal
with this right now.
Come on, rain,
don't do me like that.
My whole shelter is wet.
I'm gonna get infected
With all the mud in my shelter.
I'm coming out.
I'm done.
I'm tapping.
I can't take it anymore.
My butt hurts.
My thigh is hurt.
This rainstorm is crazy.
If this rainstorm didn't come,
I think I probably
would have made it,
Because tomorrow I would have
reinforced everything,
But that's probably me
destroying myself.
I wanna get out of here.
Okay.
Is that your final decision?
- We'll get you out of here.
- It's my final decision.
I was talking a big game,
Trying to convince myself
that I'd make it,
But I've reached my limit.
And that's it.
I can't believe it.
I can't believe it.
I still have energy
to keep going,
It just, like,
I just don't want to.
Eleven days out here
was plenty for me.
I shouldn't have climbed
that palm tree.
I shouldn't have injured myself.
It was all a risk
that didn't need to be taken
I should have been working
on my shelter.
I should have been preparin
for a crazy storm like this
But the truth is I didn't.
My biggest regret
is being stubborn
And stuck in my ways.
[narrator] after 11 days,
Nathan's decision to tap ou
Drops his psr from 6.9
To 5.7.
[nathan] I've learned a lot
I need to be a nicer person
that's for sure.
I have no one to blame
but myself.
You think you're tough
enough until you're not.
And that's the truth of it.
