Naked and Afraid (2013–…): Season 15, Episode 4 - Sibling Survival - full transcript

Fire!

My name is warrick.

I'm from east london,
south africa.

I guess I've been preparing to do
this challenge since I was a teenager,

When I first started hunting
and going for camps in the bush.

I'm definitely gonna be the first
south african to complete the show.

My brother, shaun,

Recently did this
challenge also in zambia.

He had a great
experience in the bush,

But unfortunately,
he didn't make it.

[woman] shaun?

Medic! Medic! I
need you here now.

- [medic] mr. Shaun?
- [woman] shaun fell and hit his head on a rock.

[medic] shaun? Shaun?

Open your eyes for me, mate.

[warrick] he got
medically removed.

He did sound a bit
disappointed in himself

And it kinda made
me feel a bit awful.

I'm feeling a lot better now,

And I've been trying to give
warrick all the advice that I can.

I know warrick can do this.

I'm proud of you, my brother.

My brother means
everything to me.

I've got warrick's
name on my shoulder,

- And he's got my name on his shoulder.
- Yeah.

The only thing I'm worried about

Is that my brother's got
a bigger one than I do.

Warrick!

[warrick] I'm definitely gon try my
best to finish this for my brother, shaun,

And for myself.

I'm ready.

The nerves are
kinda setting in now.

I've never been to this country

And it's totally different.

I know it's gonna be
super hard and tough,

But if you want
something really bad,

And if you put your
mind to it, you can do it.

Just seeing these hippos
is pretty intimidating.

Luckily, they are
a bit far away,

But I can imagine
when they're very close,

It's super scary.

Oh, my gosh.

Wow.

My first hippo sighting.

One of the most dangerous
animals in the zambezi river.

And he just went under.

Hopefully, he's not
coming for my boat.

My name is kat. I am 40
years old and from louisiana.

I am definitely not a barefoot,

Pregnant in the
kitchen kind of woman.

I kind of like a little bit of
danger and challenge in my life.

The toughest to date that I've
done is doing the mongol derby,

A 1,000-kilometer horse rac
across the steppe of mongoli

To have that to draw on

Definitely will be a big boo
in my confidence and morale

When things get tough.

Pedicure day!

I live on a little farm with
my fiance and my son.

I have 20 dogs, 20 cats.

Don't judge me.

I have chickens and five horses.

I'm fully expecting
this challenge to be

One of the hardest
things I've done in my life.

If I didn't think it was gonna
be hard, I wouldn't be here.

[warrick] the zambezi
river is a pretty lethal river.

There's a lot of dangers her

Just gotta be super
careful out here.

I've got a fiancee at home,

And we've just had
a newborn baby.

I'm gonna miss her
so much, little babette.

When I get back, you're
gonna have grown so much.

Some people may
think I'm a little bit bad

For leaving my fiancee at
home alone with the baby

But she was one of
my biggest encouragers.

We are super confident that
warrick's gonna ace this challenge.

[warrick] my family
means everything to me,

And I definitely want
to make them proud.

I would say I'm
feeling pretty nervous,

But excited at the same time.

Naked and afraid, here I co!

It looks like we're
getting close.

My biggest concern is
swimming in the water.

Hopefully, a crocodile
doesn't come up

And pull me down and drown m

I'm not so concerned
about shallow areas,

But hippos can hold their
breath for up to five minutes,

So you have no idea
that they're there.

Same with crocodiles. They can
hold their breath for even longer.

I'm just gonna have to
push through my fear.

Well, it looks like
I'm on an island.

I've never really been nake
in front of people before.

This could probably be
a little awkward at first.

I'll just try not to look down.

Zambia, I hope
you're ready for me.

Man, this place is beautiful!

It's gonna be my home
for the next 21 days.

It's been a couple years
since me and my fiancee met

So I haven't seen any other
naked women since then.

So, it's gonna be a
little bit weird for me.

Off to meet my partner!

I'm feeling pretty cool.

Feels quite free
being naked, actually.

It kinda feels like...

We're on a deserted islan

This looks like
fresh elephant dung.

Definitely gonna
have to be careful.

This is probably an
elephant highway.

-Hi! -Hello! Nice to meet you.

- Nice to meet you. I'm kat.
- I'm warrick.

[awkward mumbling]

[kat] so excited!

- I think we're a bit underdressed!
- [warrick] yeah, yeah.

[chuckles]

Um, [clears throat] and
where are you from?

I'm from louisiana,
which is very swampy.

- [warrick] okay.
- It's a lot different than this. It's really wet.

Uh, I've heard about louisiana.

Is that where all the
cottonmouth snakes are?

- [kat] yes!
- Okay.

- A lot of things that bite down there.
- [warrick] yeah, yeah.

- [kat] and you?
- I'm from south africa.

Wow! You might have a
little, hopefully, knowledge

- Of this area.
- A little bit, I guess. Yeah.

You have a lot of skill?

[warrick] um, yeah, with
hunting and stuff, I guess.

Wow, yes!

Yeah. I'm a bow maker,
so I make longbows.

That's exciting.

My partner's from south africa.

He brings a good vibe.

And what would you
say your skills are?

- I'm good at shelter making.
- [warrick] okay.

- I'm decent with fires. I can make some traps.
- [warrick] okay.

Ever done anything
like this before?

This will be a first for me.

Okay. That's awesome, man.

- And you?
- [warrick] this is my first time doing the challenge,

Um, but my brother
has done it before,

- So I'm doing it now after him.
- Wow!

- He got medically tapped, so...
- Oh, no!

But me coming here is also

Trying to get that, um...

Make everyone proud back home.

- [kat] I gotcha.
- Yeah, yeah.

Oh, man. That's
the worst way to go.

- [warrick] yeah, on day three.
- [kat] wow, what happened?

[warrick] his blood sugar
was a bit low and he fell over,

And then he hit the back
of his head on a rock.

Well, let's make sure
that doesn't happen.

- We're gonna eat good so we're not gonna pass out.
- Yep. Yeah, yeah.

I was kinda surprised to find out
that his brother medically tapped out.

Hopefully, he's gained
a little bit of knowledge,

Uh, that he can help us
out with this challenge.

Well, are you ready
to see what we have?

- Yeah, let's go have a look.
- [kat] okay.

So, I brought a machete.

[warrick] here's what I got.

[kat] awesome!

- Did you make this bow?
- Yes.

- [kat] really?
- Yeah.

I've been making bows
since I was three years old.

I've been doing it as a
full-time job for eight years.

We're gonna eat really well.

[warrick] I see we've
got some extras.

[narrator] to ensure
they'r safe from predators,

The team has been
given a fire starter.

They also receive
a pot to boil water.

[warrick] okay, so
I've got the map.

[kat] looks like there's
a... Quite a few islands.

[warrick] we're gonna
do a bit of island-hopping.

We're gonna have to swim
through the zambezi a bit, yeah?

Maybe try to get to this island.

- [kat] that might be our best bet right now.
- [warrick] yeah.

[kat] I am a little concerned
about the river crossings.

Worried about the crocs,

- Especially in the deeper areas.
- Yeah.

So, maybe we need to go ahead and get
started while we still have some daylight.

[warrick] let's go for it.

[narrator] based on
their skills and experience,

Warrick enters the challeng with a
primitive survival rating, or psr, of 6.7.

Kat begins with a 6.4.

They have been dropped
off on a series of islands

In the middle of
the zambezi river,

One of africa's longest
and most lethal waterways.

In these waters,

Aggressive hippos
fight for territory.

Lurking beneath
is the nile crocodile,

An ambush predator capable of lying
in wait for its pre for up to two hours.

When ready to strike,

It uses its powerful tail to
propel itself out of the water.

From the island where
they have been dropped off,

Warrick and kat will head north

To another island
with more resources,

But the journey will requir two
river crossings with strong currents.

[kat] I think we need to just be careful
when we move and watch for snakes.

- [warrick] yeah.
- [kat] they have a lot of really poisonous ones.

[narrator] some of nature's most
venomous snakes inhabit these islands,

Like the green mamba,

Whose bite can cause paralys
and even death within minute

Along with the snakes,

An aggressive herd of territorial
elephants cla these islands as their home

[elephant trumpeting]

Weighing up to six tons,

These mammoth beasts consume
up to 330 pounds of food each day,

Uprooting trees and destroying
anything that gets in their way.

[warrick] there's quite
a lot of elephant around.

- There's all this dung here.
- [kat] yeah.

These elephant highways
make it a little better traveling.

[warrick] definitely, eh?

Otherwise, we'd have to be
going through thick stuff like that.

[kat] thank you, elephants.

- [warrick laughs] just don't charge us.
- [kat laughs]

[warrick] I feel kinda
relieved about my partner.

She seems like she's
an outdoors person.

I think, too, we're
gonna get along.

[kat] wonder if there
are any warthogs here.

[warrick] I don't know if
there'll be warthogs here

'cause it's kinda
like an island.

I haven't seen any antelope
or anything that I normally hunt,

So I was expecting
to be on the mainland.

- I see... See some feathers there.
- [kat] yes.

[warrick] that looks
like a guinea fowl.

We'll definitely be having to
go for birds and guinea fowl,

Which is quite difficult,

- So maybe... -[kat]
they're pretty good eating.

[warrick] yes, they're
very good eating.

[elephants trumpeting]

- [kat] see some water up ahead.
- [warrick] yeah.

I'm sure we'll be able
to find some, like...

Fishes in these little pools.

- [kat] oh, yes!
- [warrick] 'cause they'll be a bit safer, you know?

You can still see
the bottom here.

There's some fish. Check it.

- [kat] oh, yes!
- [warrick] look at them all coming here.

[kat] hundreds, looks like.

- This might be the sweet spot later.
- [warrick] yep.

Are you skilled with, like,
weaving baskets and...

- [kat] I'm actually pretty decent.
- [warrick] okay, awesome.

- [kat] I think we can catch some fish.
- [warrick] yeah.

[kat] my grandmother
was part choctaw indian,

And she showed me plants
to eat and some traps to make

And things that she
learned from her ancestors.

[warrick] you see
there's also snails.

[kat] are they good to eat?

[warrick] I've never eaten them,
but I know they are edible, so...

[warrick] see, there's
hippo tracks here.

[kat] does it look like
kind of a small one?

[warrick] um, no.

[kat] good to know.

Hippos just kill you for fun.

- They don't even want to eat you.
- [warrick] yeah.

I was thinking we cross
to that little island just here.

- [kat] then head straight over?
- [warrick] yeah.

There is some fish. Small fish.

- [kat] I'm just gonna go nice and slow here.
- [warrick] okay.

[kat] it's moving pretty fast!

[warrick] you can feel that
water trying to take your feet, eh?

[kat] yep!

[warrick] do you need a hand?

- [kat] got it.
- [warrick] okay.

- [kat] give you a hand.
- [warrick] all right.

- That's good.
- [kat] you got it?

Okay, one more section.

Holy crap!

- Maybe it'll be a little more shallow than back there.
- [warrick] maybe.

- I think that's deeper, though.
- Great.

[warrick] okay, let's go.

- [kat] here we go.
- [warrick] yep.

[kat] let's do it!

I'm so worried about falling

- And going down to where the crocodiles are!
- [warrick] yeah.

[kat] moving pretty fast!

[warrick] yeah, so it's gonna
get a little bit deeper here now.

- You can feel the water trying to take your feet, eh?
- [kat] yep.

I'm just gonna stay here where I can
keep myself pushed against these rocks.

Warrick!

[kat] I'm just gonna stay here
where I can keep myself pushed...

- [warrick] yeah.
- [kat] ...Against these rock

Warrick!

- [warrick] okay?
- [kat] good.

- [warrick] okay.
- [kat] thank you!

[warrick] maybe we try to
go around that rock there.

Thank goodness we
didn't cut our feet on a rock.

[kat] yeah, I was thinking that.

Good job!

- Done!
- [warrick laughs] yes!

So, that means we're on the
island that we want to be on.

- Okay.
- So, I think we just gotta walk a little bit more

- And find a place where we can build our shelter.
- Okay.

It's pretty strong out there

I was pretty worried
about getting swept away...

Into the crocodile
and hippo land,

But my partner was amazing

And held onto me,

So, he saved the day.

[warrick] see how big
these elephants' foot are?

- Check it out.
- [kat] they're huge! Wow.

[warrick] I was
thinking, with our shelter,

Let's definitely be, like,
close enough to water,

- But...
- [kat] okay.

- [warrick] ...Also definitely off the elephant highways.
- [kat] right,

And maybe up a little higher so it'll be hard
for something in the water to come up to us.

- Yeah.
- Especially at night.

[warrick] yeah.

What do you think about here?

- Like, over in there?
- [warrick] like, in here.

Doesn't look like the
elephants cross here too much.

I'd say let's go for it, and then
we'll see how the night goes...

- Okay.
- And if we feel it's a little dangerous,

- Then we'll just move tomorrow.
- [warrick] yeah, yeah.

- [kat] okay.
- [warrick] maybe, um, we get the fire started.

- We can boil some water.
- [kat] okay.

[warrick] do you want this here?

[kat] sure, perfect.

[warrick] there we go.

[cheers]

[warrick] nice one!

- I'm gonna go get some water quick, okay?
- [kat] perfect.

When we're filling up
with water and stuff,

Just gotta be careful.

There is for certain,
uh, big crocs here.

Okay, so here's some water.

- [kat] awesome!
- [warrick] I'll heat this.

[kat] how big do we
wanna make our shelter?

[warrick] so, do you
see, like, how these...

These branches of this tree
just, like, wrap around us?

We can kinda maybe just...

Close it off in front of us.

This type of shelter
that we're building here

Is called a boma.

We're gonna be kinda surrounded

By all these thornbushes
and branches.

[kat] nighttime is
coming pretty quickly,

And our shelter is
coming along really nicely,

But I am pretty concerned.

Um, there's a lot of elephants.

A lot of evidence around her
there's some elephant dung.

I'm hoping just every night we can
just add to it and make it stronger,

And the elephants
leave us alone.

I don't know. That
feels pretty hot.

[warrick] uh, like, I could
just pour a small sip here.

I have been, uh, worried that I
might be overworking myself a bit,

But I've still got, uh,
quite a bit of energy,

Um, but I am also trying
to conserve my energy.

My brother did warn me
before coming out here

Just to try not to overwork
yourself too much.

The cause of my
brother tapping out

Was that he overworked
himself in the heat

And it led to low blood suga

So, I am definitely
keeping that in mind.

[kat] first night! So excited!

- And I'm already hungry.
- [both laughing]

- Yeah.
- [kat] food tomorrow for sure.

Okay, so we have elephants.

[whispers] the
elephants are very close.

[crackling]

Do you hear that?

How do you know it won't
come in here with the fire?

[warrick speaking]

[warrick coughs]

- I think I got maybe an hour of sleep total.
- Yeah.

I'm not elephant savvy.

They were literally right there.

They could just push over
this tree and stomp on us.

[warrick] yeah. While
this boils, I'm gonna go see

If I can find some food.

[kat] and I could go ahead and at
least get started on the fish basket.

[warrick] yep.

[warrick] I'm keeping a
good eye out for elephant

It does make you
feel a bit vulnerable.

I eat quite a lot.

Um, probably six meals a day

I'd say the longest
I've gone without food is

Just, uh, one day.

We're gonna have to try to find
food just to keep us in the game

[kat] this is gonna be
part of my fish basket.

Nasty little things.

My grandmother actually
did teach me a lot about traps.

And I would love
to see it actually

Work for us and bring in food.

[warrick] too many
branches in the way.

That was close.

It's difficult to get these
tiny little birds with my bow

Because they're like that
big and they never stay still,

Left and right, one
branch to the next.

Oh!

Damn!

I brought my bow because I
thought there was gonna be

Black warthogs and big
game that I could shoot.

But on a smaller island
with only bird life and fish life,

It's extremely
difficult to get food.

[elephants trumpeting]

- [kat] day three.
- [warrick] oh.

[kat speaks]

[warrick] yeah.

Today is day three,

And it's the day that my brother
got, uh, medically pulled out

So, very tough for me because I
really wanted to, uh, finish the 21 days.

[kat] it's important to me that
warrick watches his energy levels.

I know he's feeling
pretty weak right now.

And I don't want
warrick to leave.

I really don't want to
do this challenge alone.

I'm hoping to keep
positive thinking today

And hopefully prevent him
thinking about his brother.

[warrick] my partner
is pretty awesome.

Kat made a brilliant fish trap.

Definitely teamwork is
gonna be a crucial part

Of making it through
this challenge.

- [kat] I think it's good. What do you think?
- [warrick] I think it's good.

[kat] let me go right in there.

[warrick] I got a bit
of a headache today.

- [warrick] I'm hungry. Very hungry.
- [kat sighs]

- Let's go shoot some birds.
- [warrick chuckles]

- They move fast, eh.
- [kat exhales]

[bleep]

[warrick] they're so small.

For anyone, even the
best archers in the world,

To hit a tiny little bird is
kind of gonna be a lucky shot.

[kat] I'm quite
concerned about him.

He went on four treks yesterday,

And I had trouble making
a couple short ones.

So, we're just running
on empty right now.

[kat whispers] warrick.
I'm gonna go sit right here.

[kat] hey.

Warrick.

Warrick.

[kat] warrick.

Warrick.

You okay?

[warrick] I'm feeling
a bit faint, so...

Think I'll have a little rest.

[kat] I know warrick is
having a really hard tim

And [exhales] just
mentally drained right now.

And I am, too.

I know he's just trying
to push through today.

I'm concerned about
his health, though.

'cause he eats
6,000 calories a day.

I'm like 1,500.

People wonder
sometimes if this is real.

It's pretty darn real.

[warrick] with the lack of food,
my energy levels are rock bottom.

When I stand up, I get dizzy.

You know, not
getting enough food

Plays, uh, mental
challenge with your brain.

Kind of makes you feel down

And miss home and miss
your wife and miss your baby.

So the most important
thing is finding food.

[kat] I'm gonna just have
a look for some mussels.

That would be an amazing find.

I really don't want
to get to far out there

Where it drops off and
the crocodiles might be.

Found a mussel.

[clicks tongue]

Caught more.

[exhales]

[exclaims]

Second one.

I think this is gonna
help warrick a lot.

- [kat] hey.
- [warrick] hello.

[kat] got the water.
Did find something else.

[warrick] whoa.

- [warrick] jeepers! What a good find?
- [kat] it's good.

-[kat] I'm super... -[warrick]
that's like the best find so far.

[warrick] bless you.

Seeing kat pull those
mussels out of her bag,

Um, feels so awesome,
knowing that we have food.

And that we can go back ther
and look for more at a later stage.

[kat] end of day
three, I'm really excited.

Warrick is still with me.

We're just gonna try to
watch each other's back.

So, we can help each
other make it to the end.

[warrick] chewy.

Zero flavor.

Mmm.

[elephants trumpeting]

[warrick] it's day four now

And I've past, uh, my brothe

So I feel like I'm on my way now

To accomplishing this challenge.

[kat] let's go and
check this fish trap.

We're still really hungry.

Once we get food,
we're gonna be great.

Nothing.

We are so hungry that we are
starting to freaking lose our minds.

Okay, so, let's go explore
some new grounds.

Do you think if we go up here, we
can follow those elephant footprints?

[kat] feeling...

My energy drop today, for sure.

I already had to sit down once.

[warrick] sounds
like there's elephant

Up ahead.

Shh.

[warrick whispers] you
don't wanna get too close...

Because if that thing chases
you and wants to kill you, it will.

And when you try to run
around all these bushes

It will just run straight
over everything.

Just stay still.

You see how they
run over everything?

Imagine if it wanted
to come this way, like...

These trees can't save you.

[blows air]

- [exhales]
- that was exciting.

- Made my heart beat...
- [warrick exhales]

Really hard.

[warrick] today,
we wanna go fishing,

And I'll definitely try
avoiding the elephants.

Let's have a look.

Unfortunately,
there's nothing in here.

I really want fish
for dinner tonight.

Did you catch anything?

- [warrick] no, no.
- No?

Okay.

[kat clears throat] what if we
take the trap across the river?

[warrick] what do you think?

Something's not working and you
just have to try to be creative and...

- Come up with something else.
- Yeah.

We are going to cross the river

Where we saw tons of
fish on our insertion walk.

I know there's fish in there.

We've been having pretty
rotten luck catching any food.

The river is pretty fast-flowing

And can knock you off your feet.

I know it's a risk but a good
chance for us to get some food today.

Cross here on these rocks.

[kat] crossing the river was
very sketchy the first time

And I actually fell on one spot.

And warrick saved me and he doesn't
have the energy to save me again.

[warrick] so it's very important
that we get a meal today.

I've never gone so
long with so little food.

I don't know if my body
is gonna be able to make it

It is definitely a concern
when crossing the river

Because there's crocs
just right here in front of us.

Guess these rocks are sharp, eh.

Almost there, though.

[warrick] I'm already
seeing the fish.

- [kat] yeah?
- [warrick] there, the fish are there.

[kat] yes.

There was another place that
had bigger ones, not far from here.

It was like this shallow.

- [warrick] oh, yeah?
- And there were bigger ones.

- [warrick] do you wanna go check it?
- [kat] I can.

[kat] I'm looking for the very
shallow clear water we saw on day one.

There were lots of fish.

I just don't wanna use all
my energy walking around

Starting to feel weak.

Like even just lifting
your arm is, like,

Quite a mission.

That is a...

Hippo.

This is what I
was talking about.

But birds may have
had the same idea...

As me.

Really disappointing.

But maybe we'll catch some fish

Where the fish basket is now.

[exhales]

Well...

[warrick] being
here and suffering,

It almost seems like, "what
the hell am I doing here?"

You know.

I'm sure my brother is at home

Hoping that I keep on
staying longer and longer

And what's keeping me here
is I don't wanna be a failure.

Um...

I think that's the main thing.

[kat] I just have to
find my way back.

It's kind of easy to
get turned around here.

Hey, warrick! Where are you?

Warrick!

Warrick!

I'm just worried.

I'm worried I'm
getting lost right now.

Warrick!

[elephants trumpeting]

[kat] I'm worried I'm
getting lost right now.

Hey, warrick!

Warrick!

[warrick] yeah.

- [kat] hey!
- [warrick] well, there you are.

[kat] got turned around.

- Did you get lost?
- Yes.

[exhales] lack of food has
definitely affected me today.

I got a fright.

How long was I gone for?

- [warrick] long, very, very long.
- Yeah.

I just kept walking in circles.

[warrick] I've just see a whole
bunch of them swim past.

Are we gonna leave this
fish trap here overnight?

[kat] I feel like a lot
better location here.

[warrick] okay.

The location is pretty
far away from our shelter.

- [kat] now I hope it works.
- [warrick] yeah.

[warrick] I hope we have
energy to come back and check it.

[kat] is that where we
went out, right there?

- [warrick] yeah, the first day.
- [kat] yeah.

[warrick] I think walk with
your feet facing that way.

It helps with the
resistance of the water.

[warrick] whoa.

[kat] thank you.

[both exhale]

[kat speaks]

[warrick chuckles]

[warrick] you would have floated

Straight into the main
channel of the zambezi

- [warrick] with all the crocs and hippos.
- [kat] yep.

[kat] crocodile food for sure.

I hope this pays off.

[warrick] I have literally no
fuel in my petrol tank anymore.

[kat] it is a lot of
energy to expend.

Was that a wise decision?

I don't know but
it was worth a try.

[warrick] it was very tiring.

So, people, starvation is real.

We are so hungry and our
bodies had so little calories

That we get lost, we
forget what we're doing.

This challenge is so hard.

It's not just because
you're hungry.

It's because of what the lack
of nutrients does to your brain.

Sitting here wondering, like,
how things are going at home

With my fiance and
our newborn baby.

I miss them so much...

That I actually, I'm having
thoughts of coming home.

[warrick speaks]

[kat speaks]

[kat] yeah, he said
he misses his family...

And his baby and I get that.

It just pisses me off.

[exhales]

We'll see.

[kat sobs]

I got my family at home.

[kat sobs]

I miss them a lot...

But...

I'm gonna push through this.

I'm absolutely terrified of staying here
overnight by myself with the elephants

Like it's a huge fear of min but I'm
just gonna push through till the end.

I know I can do it.

I know I'm staying, so
I'm marking my day six.

It's all right here.

[warrick] hi, there.

[kat] so what are you feeling?

[warrick] I'll see what I'm
thinking at the end of the day.

[kat] fair enough.

He's gonna do what
he wants I can't tell him.

I'm not his mom.

You know.

I can't force him.

One of the main things that's stopping
me from saying, "yes, I wanna go"

Is...

[clears throat] leaving
you here by yourself.

Definitely would suck

- Without you here.
- [warrick] yeah.

[warrick] I'm gonna do my be and
just try to get some foo in our bellies

Just to give us more energy

If you want
something really bad,

If you put your mind
to it, you can do it.

[kat] and there were like...

Literally just four birds.

Right down up in here.

- [kat] you got it?
- [warrick] kat, we got a bird!

[kat] what? I might cry.

[warrick] do you see my arrow?

You've got it through the
head. I'm pretty sure it's dead.

Through the one eye,

And it literally came
out the other eye.

- So, kat...
- Oh, my god.

How do you feel about dinner?

[kat] I'm so excited.

- [warrick] we can have a drumstick each.
- Yes.

[kat] so we are finally
gonna eat good tonight.

[warrick] yes!

Pretty much one of the hardest
animals to shoot, I would say.

It's tiny, eh?

It's a excellent shot.

Probably the best
shot I've ever seen.

I've never been so
happy to see a dead bird.

[warrick laughs]

Go time. Barbecue bird.

[warrick harvey] we have
literally been starving.

You might have seen us eat

One or two things here or there,

But I promise you,
like, that much food.

[kat sibley] that may not
seem like a lot of meat

To anyone else.

But to warrick and
I, it's our mini feast.

No one knows starving
until they go five days

- Without food.
- [warrick] yeah.

There's your drumstick.

[kat] ♪ drumstick ♪

I pulled off the meat.

But you eat everything.
You eat the bones.

Mmm. This is the best
bird I've ever eaten.

- In my life.
- [kat] mmm.

[kat whispering]

[warrick whispering]

[kat whispering]

[bird screeching]

[wings flapping]

- [kat] go.
- [warrick] got that.

[kat shouts]

[bleep] what the [bleep]!

[bird screeching]

[wings flapping]

[kat] go. Go. Go.

Go. Where's it at?

What the [bleep]!

You all are not gonna
believe this. [exhales deeply]

[breathing heavily] guinea
fowl came and roosted.

Right above our boma.

[breathless] and, well,

Warrick took a shot...

And...

Got it!

[exclaims] whoo-hoo!
Oh, my gosh, warrick!

- [excitedly] look at that.
- [exclaims] yes!

- We are eating tonight!
- So [bleep] hungry.

[kat exclaims] damn, warrick,
that was [bleep] amazing.

[laughs heartily]

- [kat] amazing.
- [warrick chuckles] game changer.

Two birds. One day.

Tonight is the first
time in six days

That we are
actually gonna be full.

[kat] dinner.

On the barbecue, we've
got drumsticks and it's back.

It is incredible.

- Mmm!
- Smells so good.

[warrick speaking]

- [kat] um, all yours.
- [warrick] mmm.

What a difference
a meal can make.

I shot two birds today.

And I feel like a
different person.

I felt like tapping out today.

I was this close to leaving.

But after eating
those two birds,

I'm feeling positive again.

[elephants trumpeting]

[warrick] the
skin's the best, eh?

Actually, my favorite
piece was the ass [bleep].

[kat chuckles softly]

He literally ate the ass [bleep]

I'm so excited that
warrick's staying.

Such a relief.

I wanted to leave.

But there was a part of
me that was feeling bad

And maybe thinking that
it's the wrong decision.

I'm gonna take it
one day at a time.

It's a fight between hunger
and staying here for kat.

And for my brother.

What I am learning
about myself is

I do have a bit of a sense
of honor for other people.

- [elephant trumpeting]
- [kat] and there he is.

On the other side
of the zambezi river.

[whispering] crazy.

[elephant trumpeting]

[kat whispering] mr. Elephant,
can you please bring

Our fish basket
back across the river?

That would be amazing.

[warrick] I ate my last
bit of guinea fowl last night

And now I'm back
to hunger pains.

Today we want to get more birds.

It's gonna spend less
energy missioning very far

And we're gonna try
shooting them with the bow.

Because eating those
birds made us so happ

And we want to stay
like that every day

[birds chirping]

I really want to go
get my fish trap today,

But just do not have the
energy to go over there

And check it.

[suspenseful music playing]

[drums beating]

[bleep]

Everything that I shot,

They've been very
rare opportunities.

And for, like, a guinea
fow to come land

In a tree above
us again, that was

Like a one in a million chance.

[birds chirping]

[kat] another day in paradise.

[whispers] I'm starving.

I'm looking for
mussels and snails.

And there's some tiny
snails, but not worth eating.

It'd be like ant-sized
meat. [chuckles softly]

Might as well let them grow up.

You know what I was thinking?

I can just put my fish basket
right here and catch crabs.

If I go get it back.

I really need to go get it back.

But it's across the river.

[exhales heavily]

But I need warrick with
me because I freaking drown

Almost every time I go in there.

[exhales heavily]

Do you want to try to go
get that fish trap tomorrow?

- [breathes heavily]
- [kat] you think you can?

Oh, I don't know.

I think I'm gonna
waste my energy.

I get that. [exhales]

Well, you wanna get it
and then bring it back, yeah?

I think I'm gonna
go get it tomorrow.

But I think I can do it even
if you're feeling too drained.

[warrick] kat wants to go back,

Far back,

Um, and waste a lot of
energy to get a fish basket.

I think it's a waste of time

She seems very
enthusiastic about it.

I don't want to kill her dreams.

I'm feeling like I
physically could go get it

But it's across the
river. [exhales sharply]

And maybe it's
empty, but I just feel

Like there might be fish
swimming around in that.

It'd take a lot of
work and I would love

To see it actually
bring in food.

[drum beating]

[warrick] I wonder how
much weight we've lost now.

[kat] I was
wondering that myself.

You've definitely lost weight.

- [kat] you can tell?
- [warrick] yeah.

Do you really want to
get the, uh, fish basket?

Because it is quite far.

I've been thinking about that.

[clears throat]

I really think that the
risk of going to get it,

- Crossing the river might outweigh the benefit.
- [warrick] yeah.

So, why don't we just...

- Leave the fish basket.
- Yeah.

[warrick speaking]

[kat] mmm-hmm.

Elephants are really
close to our boma.

Really, really close.

[whispering] wow.

[elephant growls]

[kat] you can hear
them cracking the trees.

They just walk over
trees like it's nothing.

They are huge.

Eight of them.

- [warrick] gorgeous. [bleep]
- [kat gasps] holy [bleep]

[suspenseful music playing]

[kat] we might have company...

- In the boma tonight.
- We've got company.

[sinister music playing]

- [kat speaking]
- [warrick speaking]

[kat panicking] guys.

There's an elephant.

Really close by.

[crunching]

[elephant trumpeting]

[whispers]

[elephant trumpeting]

[whispers] scared out
of my mind. Oh, my god.

[thumping]

[warrick speaking]

[crunching]

[elephant trumpeting]

[kat speaking]

[elephant grunting]

[branches cracking]

You don't know real fear
until you're lying there

On the ground and
there's an elephant

20 yards outside of your boma.

Or six elephants.

And the only thing
that's protecting you

Is a little bitty fire and
a few branches.[scoffs]

[sniffles] it's ridiculous
if you think about it.

[birds screeching]

[whispers under breath] ow.

I think we need to move.

What do you think?

[kat] there were
elephants all night long.

And it's been hard finding food.

I'm kind of tired of this place.

[warrick] we haven't been
to the end of the island yet

Where there's
another food source.

- Maybe we go check it out.
- Yeah.

Hopefully, there's
more food there

And a little less
elephants. [chuckles softly]

[warrick] yeah.

Because that's our extraction.

So, right now, we're there.

If we can get to here,

Then extraction
day will be shorter.

- That'll make extraction day a lot easier.
- [warrick] yeah.

We are moving to
the northeastern tip

Of the island.

[warrick] if we can
go tomorrow, like,

- Break things up, eh?
- [kat] yeah, absolutely. Just help our minds.

[kat] today's day 12
and we are moving.

We're just ready
for a new start.

Let's do it.

[warrick] we want
to stick to the route

And then get to the point.

So, we just want to
make sure that we've got

Visual of the
water at all times.

[narrator] to reach
the north shore

And the promise
of better resources,

Kat and warrick
will need to journey

Through a popular grazing sp

For the island's
herd of elephants.

[warrick] our energy
levels are feeling very low.

Short breath but, uh,
walking very slowly.

[kat] getting thirsty.

You wanna rest for a minute?

[warrick] yeah.
Here, sit on the sand.

- [kat] rest about five minutes.
- [warrick] okay.

Just tell me when you're
ready because I don't know time.

Ready if you are.

Ah...

[eerie sound]

- [kat] warrick.
- Huh?

- [kat] you okay?
- Sorry. I almost fainted.

[kat] I'm really worried
about warrick passing out.

I hope moving isn't a bad idea.

[warrick exhales deeply]

The only thing that's
keeping me going right now

Is my brother and knowing
what it means for him

For me to finish.

[kat] it looks like
we've reached

The most northeast
part of the island.

[warrick] yes.

[kat] so now we need to find...

[warrick] ...A place
that's out of the wind.

[kat] absolutely.

[warrick] kat, what
about in here?

[kat] let's check it out.

Do you think the
wind will blow in there?

It'll be out of the
way of the elephants.

- [warrick] yeah.
- [kat] and hippos.

[warrick] so you just
have to clear a little hollow

- And it is already here.
- [kat] let's check.

[warrick] we could sweep
all these twigs away.

- [kat] I like it.
- [warrick] yeah.

[kat] this might be home.

We just have to clear out inside

And make sure we
have a good windbreak

And I think it'll work.

Fire.

[kat] we'll just got
the fire started.

This is gonna be for windbreak.

[kat speaking]

[warrick groans]

[warrick speaking]

[kat speaking]

[kat speaking]

Pretty cold morning.

[kat] holy freak,
it's cold out here.

I didn't sleep very much.

- [warrick] yeah.
- [kat] that trek, it took a lot out of me.

[warrick] hopefully, there's
more food in the area.

There, on the far rock there.

Seems to be
something lying down.

It could be a croc.

These crocs, they
like to come out

And sit on rocks
or sit on the banks

And just bask in the sun a bit,

Especially after
a long, cold night.

This croc's about
five feet long.

It would be a good meal.

I'm very happy that we've,
uh, found this new location

And we've moved here.

If I could kill a croc,
that would mean

Challenge is done and dusted

I think I'm gonna get in here

And see if I can
get up behind him,

'cause he's facing that
way and just maybe

Grab him on the tail.

[bleep]

[warrick] a crocodile
would be a nice kill.

I know they are dangerous,

But I don't have
any fear for them.

I actually want to get close

But I think that's, like,
part of the starvation

Affecting my brain. [laugh]

[kat] if this works,
it'll be a miracle.

It'll be the best thing
[sighs] of this challenge.

He's definitely closer
than I thought he would get

If he gets to it,

He's gonna have to
have really fast reflexes

So that croc doesn't bite hi

Oh.

He turned.

Uh, slid into the river.

Holy [bleep].

[gasps] holy [blee.

[kat] warrick!

Oh, [bleep].

Croc saw warrick
and slid into the river.

Holy [bleep].

[warrick speaking]

[kat] I'm impressed.

Awesome attempt.

[warrick] clever,
clever little dude.

I exerted quite a lot of energy

Trying to get a crocodile.

But it was worth a try anyway.

If I can get a croc,

That would be 21 days.

No problem.

Whew.

[elephant trumpeting]

[warrick] hey, kat.

[kat] hey. You got
pretty close to the croc.

I saw one fish in here.

Maybe there's more if
you wanna go in there

And see if you see more fish.

[warrick] yeah.

[kat] I'm feeling
really hungry today.

[warrick] hey, here's a fish.

[kat sighs] I probably need
to make another fish trap.

[warrick] yeah.

[kat] I want fish.

We have a good
idea for a fish trap.

Number two, yay, get
to build another one.

Look at all the fish.
They're taunting me.

You see them?

The fish that we're seeing,

We're seeing very small fish

And they may just be too small

And get through the fish trap.

So we'll see how it goes.

This move didn't
provide the food

We were hoping for, but...

You make plans
and it doesn't work out

And you have to
come up with a backup.

Otherwise, you're
not gonna make it.

Survival is all about
adapting to your environment

Learning as you
go, and not give up.

So I'm gonna untie
these later and make a "u."

But it's gonna be smaller.
What do you think?

[warrick] good.

[kat] there's a lot
of little fish right here.

Maybe you could come
sit with your bow and arrow

And if you see a
big one, murder it.

[warrick] so close.

[kat] the challenge
is proving to myself

That I have grit.

When I decide I
wanna do something,

I'm gonna keep going after I

But now I really am
ready to eat. [chuckles]

[kat] as time goes on,

This challenge gets
more and more difficult

And it just seems to
go on and on and on.

Heck, yeah.

[gasps] I just caught a frog
and I'm not opening my hand.

I never thought I'd be so
happy that we're eating frog.

- Tastes like chicken.
- Mmm.

- You have it.
- You can have it.

I always try to give warric
a little bit more of the foo

Just because he needs
more and he's struggling.

But, um, he's hanging in there.

Quite tasty.

- Right?
- It tastes like a bird leg.

My mind is all focused
on finishing the challenge

And I, I know I will 'cause I'm

Not going to tap out at this
point, that would be stupid.

Even though, like, physicall
I'm feeling very drained.

It might feel good for
you to get in the water

And just kind of float around.
It's a little deeper there.

[warrick] I respect kat
and these past couple of day

She has been helping me through.

Every day it has been a
huge struggle just to stay

[kat] all right, someone's
been eating all the muscles.

Warrick's really
struggling today.

I was hoping he'd feel good
enough to help me do this

But I don't think he is.

I'm going to have to try
to get food for both of us.

I'm going to be so
excited I might scream

If I get a fish in
my fish basket

Because so far I've
been having terrible luck.

There's a crab in here.

But no fish.

Show me your little crab.

This is the one he roasted.

He's going to
eat it shell and all.

I'm trying everything
I kno as far as food

To get him through
to extraction with me.

[warrick] when you get more
and more desperate for food

Actually I don't mind
what we eat now.

These are termites
in the firewood

And they got a bit
of protein in them

So we're going to eat them.

Getting them all off.

And they falling
into the pot lid.

[kat] there's a
lot of dirt in here.

[warrick] right, let me
just put the water in.

So the dirt would sink
and the termites float.

That's how desperate we are.

[kat] I'll eat
anything right now.

A lot of dirt in there.

What I would not
give for fish right now.

And nada.

- There's nothing in here.
- Yeah?

And we decided to
move it to the river.

We're close to the bank
where it's slow moving

And we've seen
some crab activity.

You all right?

[narrator] nineteen
days into the challenge,

Kat and warrick have each
consumed barely 1,200 calori

And warrick has burned
nearly 60,000 calories.

Anemia is setting in
and their motor skills

Are now compromised
from the lack of nutrition.

[kat] he's fighting
really hard to stay.

But he's struggling big time.

He's having trouble
even pulling his bow back

Right now. He's just...
Just has no energy.

I hope he can push through.

But, I don't know.

Doing all right?

[warrick] like death.

[sighs]

My body's just finished.

[kat] why don't you
just go lay down.

[clears throat]

[sniffs]

This just in, an
all-inclusive resort

On the island of paradise.

Want to lose that last 5 pounds?

Come on over.

Pristine water
straight from the river.

I'll just give you the
[bleep] for a couple days

And you'll lose those 5
pounds like that. Guaranteed.

What else do we offer, warrick?

We offer starvation. Hard beds.

Dirty body. Yes, very nice.

Come on over. We
got a deal for you.

Warrick?

His eyes are rolled
back in his head.

- Warrick?
- I'm just dizzy.

Warrick, you just passed out.

Okay.

[narrator] to ensure
he's not in any danger,

The producers call in the
medic to check on warrick.

- [glen] warrick?
- [warrick] uh-huh.

I think I was just dizzy.

[glen speaking]

[warrick moans weakly]

[glen] try to sit up.

So you've probably got
a bit of heat exhaustion.

You are a little bit dehydrated.

Your vital signs and
everything else are okay.

[kat] I'll get you some water.

He's been doing worse
and worse every day.

He has like, turned
around his mindset.

He wants this really bad.
And I want it bad for him.

So, we'll see.

[warrick] I drank
the pot of water.

And I do feel a little
bit more hydrated now.

So, yeah, we'll see.

Hopefully tomorrow
I'll have more energy.

[kat yawns]

I can't believe it's
been 20 days already.

Today, our goal is
to save our energy.

We have a pretty big walk
tomorrow for extraction.

Finally caught a
fish in the fish trap!

Yay! It's officially
a fish trap.

Caught a fish on the last day.

It's little. I don't care.

I'm so happy. I feel validated
that the fish trap works.

Fish head.

Fish brain.

Fish skull.

It is evening of day 20.

We are ready to get
the hell out of here.

[chuckles] let us know
how you really feel, warrick.

It is day 21.

And I am so excited.

When I get home, I'm gonna
enjoy everything so much more.

My family.

Food.

Map-wise, we're at
the tip of this island.

We need to head northeast

- To extraction.
- Extraction.

[warrick] goodbye, boma.

[kat] nice not knowing you.

[narrator] after 21
days and malnourished,

Warrick and kat must again enter the
untamed waters of the zambezi river.

Once across, they will need to
traverse their third and final island.

A mile and a half trek
over thorn-covered terrain,

Avoiding the constant
threa of roaming elephants.

At the end of the island, they will
need to make one final river crossing

Through swift-moving waters
before reaching their extraction point.

See? This is where
we're gonna cross.

[kat] let's do it.

[high-five]

[kat] watch for crocs.

[warrick] the zambezi
river is not the kind of river

You wanna be
facing on zero energy.

It'll sweep you
right off your feet

And you can end up in the deep,
deep waters with crocs and hippos.

Now, we're getting a bit rocky.

[kat] ow.

[warrick] how do you feel?

[kat] my legs are feeling
pretty weak right now.

- Like jelly.
- [warrick] so weak. So weak.

[kat groans]

I definitely feel like
I'm getting weaker.

[warrick] yeah, me too.

I don't wanna fall over or
be incapable of finishing.

[kat] there's a lot of
downed vines and trees here.

- [warrick] yeah.
- [kat] definitely where the elephants travel.

[warrick] yeah, the
elephants love it here.

[elephant cries]

[kat groans] ah!

- [warrick] a bit thorny, right?
- [kat] yeah.

I've had enough of this island.

[warrick] yeah.

I hear the rapids.

Go through here.

[kat groans]

It's quite a strong
little flow, eh?

[kat] it is.

That's a long crossing.

And it looks fast.

[water rushes]

[kat] it's slippery. Feel it?

- [warrick] here, let me go a bit forward.
- [kat] thank you.

[warrick] feel the ground.

Slowly.

[warrick exhales]

[kat] be really careful.

[hippo grunts]

[warrick] be careful here.

[kat] okay, I'll stay
on this side of you.

[crocodile hisses]

Good teamwork.

[warrick] that's
our last crossing.

[kat yawns]

A bit dizzy.

Oh, okay.

[exhales]

Seeing stars a bit.

[exhales]

[kat] if we need a
break, just let me know.

[warrick] no, it's
just, uh, feeling faint.

I just, uh, can't
wait to... To finish.

[kat] let's head
down to the beach.

[warrick] this
looks like the area.

I see something.

- Where?
- Look.

[kat gasps]

What's that?

[kat] it's a boat!

- [warrick] whoo!
- [kat] woo-hoo!

Yes!

We rocked it! Whoo!

[breathing heavily] that was
definitely an experience of a lifetime.

Whoo!

There was a lot of
times I wanted to tap out,

But, uh, kat was positive
the whole way through.

She helped me a
lot to get to the end.

I'm really happy you stayed.

Getting through those water
crossings would have been...

- [warrick] yeah.
- Really challenging by myself.

People look at me
sometimes and I don't look like

I may be able to
survive in a situation.

But I always prove people wrong

And I do feel like I did again.

[narrator] after 21 days, kat
endured the rigors of the challenge,

Losing a total of 22 pounds

Her primitive survival
ratin jumps from 6.4 to 7.5.

[shaun speaking]

[warrick] it's your brother.

So we finally finished. Had me worried,
it was the longest time of my life.

[warrick cries]

[kat] he crushed
it. He did amazing.

[shaun speaking]

Absolutely, we were partners. It
was the only way we got through.

[shaun speaking]

[warrick] cheers, eh?

[warrick] bye.

- Think he's pretty proud of you.
- [exhales] yeah.

- Feels good, huh?
- Yeah.

[narrator] severely weakened
warrick willed his way to the finish line.

He completes the challenge
shedding 36 pounds.

His psr climbs
from a 6.7 to a 7.7.

[warrick] my family was behind
me all the way and supporting me.

So I feel very proud of
myself for sticking it out.

Especially being the first south
african to complete this challenge.

Even though I suffered
so much through this,

I'd love for my brother to
get a chance to come bac

So he can feel what it feels
like to finish the challenge.

We pushed our
bodies to the limit.

I wouldn't have been able to
physically stay there one more day.

[kat] I did not think
warric was gonna make it.

But he just kept digging
deeper and deeper

And we definitely helped
each other push through.

I wanna stand on here
like titanic.

- [warrick] yes!
- [kat] whoo!

We rocked it!
