Naked and Afraid (2013–…): Season 15, Episode 3 - Brother's Keeper - full transcript

A transgender Air Force vet and a South African farmer tackle the deadly bush of Zambia, where territorial elephants, baboons and crocodiles threaten their every move; when disaster strikes, a sibling seeks redemption.

Warthog.

We gotta watch out for the tusk.

Kill you in a heartbeat.

People like me don't get
chosen for things like this.

I am trans and I don't care
who knows it.

What defines me is
not how I look or how I act.

It's what I do in my life.

And the things that I do in my
life are [bleep] epic.

I'm a bow hunter. I've been
hunting my entire life.

I was in the airforce
for 12 years and

During that time, I
went overseas 12 times.

I've done a week at a time
alone, by myself in the woods

With nothing but a knife.

So, yes. I am absolutely
prepared for this.

I was born male but, in my mind,
growing up, I've always been female.

Transitioning is the hardest
thing I've ever done but so worth it.

The one thing I am aware
of from my partner is that,

He or she is gonna see a
different and more unique body

Than they've probably ever seen.

So, for my partner, this is gonna
be an experience of a lifetime.

My name is shaun and
I'm from south africa.

I'm a farmer and a
professional hunter.

I'm always outdoors,
usually with my brother.

The bush to me is my church.
It's where I feel most comfortable.

I would say I'm a
little bit conservative.

I don't often take my
clothes off around everybody.

I'm feeling very nervous
meeting a total stranger naked.

It's a bit awkward. I'm about
to go and meet my partner.

But, um, that partner of mine
is also gonna be naked, so,

I think we're gonna be on
the same... On the same page.

[terra] things on the outside
aren't what they are supposed to be

At this point in my
transgender transition.

I do have breasts and I do
have the male genitalia still.

Here we go.

When it comes to my partner, they're
either gonna accept everything or

They're gonna go off the deep end
and we're gonna see some bad [bleep].

[terra] hi.

- I'm terra.
- I'm shaun.

- How are you?
- I'm fine.

Do you have any questions?

Not at the moment.

So, obviously you can
see that I'm not the same as

Every other girl that
has been on the show.

- You're unique. Yeah.
- Little unique.

What are your thoughts on this?

Um...

It is a bit of a shock to me.

And we're all
unique and special.

I'm open-minded and we're
gonna do this together. Yeah.

Don't worry. I've got your back.

Thank you.

I appreciate that and
I've got your back too.

- Great.
- Hearing that is a big thing to me.

- We're gonna do this. We're gonna be okay.
- Yeah.

- I'm excited.
- Me too.

I'm a hell of a lot more surprised
than I thought I was gonna be.

He looked at me like I was a normal
person. That was exactly what I needed.

A great surprise and
I'm pretty happy so far.

Good.

- Nice to meet you.
- Nice to meet you.

Finally.

- We will be okay.
- Yeah.

Terra is awesome.

For someone as unique
as that to have the courage

To come out. She's a
hero in my eyes already.

You have any skills or anything
you need to bring to table first off?

I'm a farmer and a
professional hunter.

I'm from south africa.

Oh! So you're not very far away.

No.

And, what do
you do for a living?

I'm an archery tech. I
actually make weapons.

Oh really? I see you
got one of your bows.

This is handmade by me

And I cannot stress how happy
I am to see this bow with me.

Pretty cool.

Well hopefully we can
get some... Some meat.

What do you mean hopeful?
No. We are gonna get meat.

We're gonna get some, eh? Right.

- I brought my machete.
- Nice. We're gonna need that.

[narrator] shaun and terra
have also been given a pot

To stay hydrated in the
intense zambian heat

And a firestarter to
ward off predators.

All right. So, this
is where we are.

- [shaun] yeah.
- [terra] there's extraction.

You think we should
build something here?

[shaun] there's the water.

There's a bit of food
sources around it too?

[terra] yup. And if
we go across here,

Looks like we're gonna
have some open land here.

[shaun] yeah. It's quite open
land. Dangerous animals too, yeah?

Gotta keep our eyes open.

- [terra] yeah.
- [shaun] be careful.

- Let's get going.
- Let's go.

[narrator] based on their
skills and experience,

Shaun enters the challenge with a
primitive survival rating or psr of 7.5.

Terra begins
with a psr of 7.6.

They will have to survive
21 days in pia manzi, zambia.

This area of dense
brush and grasslands

In the heart of southern africa,

Is traversed by
the lwangua river.

The deep water camouflages one of
the one of the largest concentrations

Of crocodiles in africa.

These man-eaters are some of
the most cunning on the continent

Learning their prey's
behavior before they strike.

Large troops of baboons, leopards,
and elephants also patrol the territory.

Weighing up to 26,000 pounds,
elephants are capable of crushing a human

With their trunk.

[terra] what were you
expecting for a partner?

[shaun] a partner like you
that knows how to hunt.

Because I love
taking people hunting.

Guiding them, and teaching
them about the bush.

And yourself?

-The main reason I... -sorry, I
just need to tell you something.

- I got a hearing problem.
- Okay.

So if I don't hear you,
I've got hearing aids.

- Okay.
- I lip read a lot.

- Okay.
- So if I don't hear you, I would...

Do you want me to speak up?

- Yes, please.
- Okay.

- Okay. Thank you.
- Gotcha.

What were you expecting?

It's not what I was expecting.
It's what I was not hoping for.

[shaun] all right.

[terra] four years ago, I decided to
go ahead and come out as transgender

And there are many, many people
in this world that would look at me and

Right off the bat be like, "oh [bleep]
I don't wanna be with this person."

Yeah. So that's what
you were not hoping for.

Yeah.

A bigot.

You know, a homophobe and when you came
up to me, originally and you hugged me...

That turned everything in the world
around for me. You have no idea.

- Really?
- Yeah.

- So, you do get it.
- Yeah.

Great.

[shaun] I'm 50 percent
deaf in both of my ears.

When I was a kid, I
was bullied quite a lot

And I used to have
a big mop of red hair.

Lots of freckles and a big
old fashioned hearing aid.

So I've been through that.

And if everybody was the same,
the world would be a boring place.

[terra] exactly.

My focus out here is to make sure that my
kids know that no matter what you look like,

Or who you love,

Any challenge can be overcome.

And these 21 days
will prove that to them.

[shaun] I'm doing
this to push myself,

Too learn more about
myself, to grow as a person.

[terra] god, I'm glad I
got you as a partner.

[shaun chuckles] me, too.

And you can see
how flattened it is here.

A lot of elephants been
walking through here.

[terra] you think this is a bedding
area or just a walking area?

[shaun] I think
it's a bedding area.

You can see they've
been lying down here.

[terra] that's what
I'm thinking too.

-You know, up in the hills,
we get a... -[elephant shouts]

[terra] shh... Shh...

Look at that.

Here we go.

This looks like a boo elephant.

If we are... Gotta keep an eye.

They get quite aggressive.

[roaring]

[shaun] we're going
up high, yeah?

[terra] oh, the
terrain is changing.

[shaun] yeah. No
sign of water at all yet.

[terra] no. Not yet.

[shaun] how are your
feet getting on these rocks?

[terra] I'm not gonna tell
you these rocks are fun.

[shaun] yeah, I
know. It's quite jagged.

[terra] this trip is just
torture. It's uphill, on rocks,

Through elephant territory.

I am getting tired and I am
hoping we find water soon.

[shaun] I think the river will be down there.
You can see there's some big green trees.

I think the water is
there in that valley.

I wanna get there.

[terra] I can hear the water.
It's definitely running this way.

[shaun] I think we get over
here and we'll be able to see.

Oh, wow! This is stunning.

This is like an oasis.

[terra] this is perfect.

[shaun] this water
is crystal clear, man.

[terra] how can we
ask for anything else?

[shaun] quite lucky, huh?

Crocodile.

[shaun] let's go and
have a look, yeah?

[terra] potential food source
depending on how big it is.

You can see by
the size of the...

- Of the tracks.
- It's...

The tail.

[shaun] that's quite a... That's
gotta be about an eight-foot croc.

- And we've to be...
- Yes.

Oh, wow. There's actually
crocodiles everywhere.

That's quite dangerous,
to get over there.

[terra] I think I could actually
have a shot from this bank

To that bank.

[shaun speaking]

And, be careful, yeah.

Okay.

[shaun] crocodiles are
one of the only species

That have been documented
to prey on humans.

And you can call it a maneater.
Very sneaky, very dangerous.

You gotta be very careful.
You gotta keep a good eye.

[cameraman whispers] miss, can you
go for that way without making any noise?

'cause that guy right there

Has absolutely no problem taking
anything off your body that they want.

[terra sighs]

[terra] I'm disappointed.

[cameraman] at least our creek has
crocodiles so we do have a good food source.

[shaun] yeah.

But, you gotta be very careful.

It's getting late
so we need a fire.

I'm gonna get some
water, get re-hydrated

And then, start
building our shelter.

[terra] we need to
seriously hydrate.

[shaun] yeah.

Just put this in the sun like
this to dry out any moisture.

[terra] I see a bunch
of elephant dung.

[shaun] oh yeah?

Nice dung. Quite dry.

- [shaun] okay.
- [terra] beautiful.

Oh, that's great.

Hours into this challenge,
we have water, we have fire...

[shaun] fire...

[terra] we have crocodiles.

How much more could we ask for?

Give me high five.

We got limited time because
we only found our spot quite late.

So the priority is
to get a shelter.

[terra] all right.

- [shaun] we need to get out of the sun.
- [terra] yup.

[shaun speaking]

Otherwise it's another
dangerous thing for me.

[terra] I know that we need a shelter
and we don't have a lot of time left

And I need to get
something done.

[shaun] sun's going down,
the temperature is dropping.

[terra] and we've only
got about an hour left.

So I've got a rock wall.
I'll start cutting poles and

Digging them into the ground

To put up walls going
around the rock wall.

[shaun] so you're just
putting up a basic fence

And then all this
acacia hooks on.

It's just gonna go
all around it, so...

Just trying to make
it as thick as possible.

That's gonna be
our little doorway.

Even breathing hard takes
all your water out of your body.

And I'm breathing hard.

[shaun] we need a lot of firewood
'cause we're gonna need fire

Throughout the night.

Very important to keep warm.

And to keep the
dangerous stuff away.

They don't really like coming
around fire and smoke.

I think this is gonna
work for tonight.

[birds chirping]

[terra speaks]

You too. [chuckles]

You just seem like
a good person, so...

I'm really happy about that.

[shaun] yeah.

And if you have
any questions, ask.

[shaun] you think you're
born with this, um...

Yeah.

- It's always been there.
- It must've been quite tough.

After I came out
online, on social media,

- Yeah.
- I lost over 200 people within a couple of days.

Really, huh? That's crazy.

So, the people I thought were
my friends and my family left.

My mother still calls
me by my old name.

Yeah?

She still calls me luke.

You're courageous for finally
doing what feels right for yourself.

It doesn't matter what
other people think.

I've been very, very scared about
who I was gonna be partnered up with.

Yeah, I can imagine.

[terra] how's sleeping
going for you?

[shaun] not good at all.

Oh my god, it's like
a [bleeping] freezer.

[shaun] yeah. It's cold.

I'm shivering my ass off.

Oh, we're half-frozen.

I hate our tiny boma.

We haven't got
[bleep] for sleep.

It's cold and windy and [bleep].

It's gonna be a long night.

[shaun] yeah.

I don't wanna have a
night like this every night.

We gotta fix this [bleep].

Yeah. We're gotta
make a plan tomorrow.

[terra] sun's finally coming up.

That sucks.

I think I got maybe ten
minutes of sleep last night.

[shaun] yeah.

And we gotta be
prepared for much colder.

I think I'm gonna
go look for a shelter.

Okay.

Yesterday we made a
temporary boma for the night

Because we were running
out of time and it was worthless.

So, today's priority is
getting a new shelter built.

[shaun] you see those
rocks there? Lean there.

- So it's almost like... You ready?
- Yup.

[terra] I like that.

We just need to add on to that
and make a burner around it.

- [terra] I like that.
- I like that too.

[shaun] we're gonna
build a fire inside here.

Got a rock wall that's
at a 35 degree angle

So it perfectly was gonna
reflect the heat back on us.

Coming up the front, the
back, to keep the wind out at night.

Let's tie this to the
wall nice and thick,

Double them up and I
think that would do the job.

This boma should be a hell of
a lot better than the last night's.

[terra] the sand feels
like it's 192 degrees.

Dude, you're getting so red.

Come sit in the shade
for a few minutes.

[shaun] I'm all right.

Do you want me to
grab anything else?

Yes, please. I need
some more leaves there.

If you see any firewood,
start getting firewood too.

Quite tough out here.

Been working hard since
yesterday and today in the sun.

We need to slow down
but we can't really slow down

Because we need
to get shelter done,

Need to get firewood.
There's lots of work to be done.

[terra] when I'm working, the thing
I'm worried about is the mid-day heat.

It's noon. It's a 1,000 degrees.

And I'm feeling it.

Oh, my god!

[sighs]

[terra] I don't know
what's going on.

Suddenly, I just
got this headache.

- [shaun] what is it?
- [terra] I don't know.

It feels like I'm
burning right here.

Never had anything like this.

Have you had heatstroke
or sunstroke before?

No.

Do you want me to pour some
water on you to cool you down?

Yeah.

Okay, I'm gonna pour. I'm
gonna pour it on your head.

[terra exhales]

[terra] oh [bleep]!

I'm gonna get
more. Okay. Hold on.

No more. No more.

- No more?
- Feels like I'm freezing now.

I'm gonna stand this up
so it just keeps the heat.

[sniffles]

- [terra] I'm not tapping.
- [shaun] no, we don't need to.

Just need a break. Need rest.

My partner might have
had a bit of sunstroke

Or dehydration.

Not a lot of shade and it's
very hot and lack of sleep.

I'm right here if you
need anything, okay?

[terra] okay.

Thank you.

[shaun] this is africa.
We need a shelter.

We can't be in the wild bush
without it. I have to get it done.

It's been tough for me
to do this all on my own.

I didn't want to push
myself this much.

It feels like I run a
marathon the last two days.

I'm gonna keep
out the sun, yeah?

Sitting here in the cool
water, cooling down.

Got an umbrella on my head.

My partner is
feeling a migraine.

So I'm being a team player and
I'm doing a lot of work by myself.

Terra, how are you doing?

[terra] better.

I got some boiling water,
cooling in there for you.

You look better.

- Thank you.
- Cool.

[terra] that man, he's literally
been doing everything today.

If it wasn't for him, I
mean, look at all this.

Look at the firewood. He is
probably the most selfless person.

I couldn't have asked
for a better partner.

At all.

Okay, I'm gonna close up.

Boma's better than
it was last night.

Hopefully, I will be
able to sleep tonight.

[fire crackling]

[terra] we got our fire going.

And now the rock wall is warmer.

I mean, it's not the taj
mahal or ramada but...

It's better than what we
had last night for sure.

Much better.

[shaun clears throat]

[terra] I slept good.

- Did you?
- Yup.

- What about you?
- Didn't get too much sleep.

Feeling a bit weak this morning.

Feel a bit light-headed.

Why don't you go back
to sleep when I leave?

- [shaun] are you gonna head out?
- [terra] yeah.

- [shaun] find some food.
- [terra] that's the plan.

[shaun] I wanted to go hunting with my
partner but I'm feeling a bit light-headed

And weak.

- Be back in a little while.
- [shaun] yeah.

- Good luck.
- Thanks.

Yesterday, all the work I did,
pushed my body quite a bit.

I just hope things get better
because this is a team spirit thing.

[terra] shaun needs to
take care of himself today.

He's been busting
his tail the whole time.

I want him to heal up
for a day, rest for a day.

So, before it gets stupid hot, I
need to find something to eat.

That is the goal for today.

[exhales] that's weird.

Looking through the shrubs and the trees
over here, I saw bedding areas down there.

And I see all of this
down grass here.

Gonna make my way back
down that way towards that river

And then back over, and uh...

Best case scenario,
I get something.

Worst case scenario, I get
exercise and lose energy.

[producer] shaun?

Medics, come and
get ice on him okay?

Medic. Medic, I
need you here now.

- [man] is that shaun?
- Shaun fell and hit his head on a rock.

[man] I need you to sit up.

Good job.

Start making my way back to camp

And come up with
a better game plan.

[terra] oh, no!

[medic] shaun? Shaun?

Open your eyes for me, mate.

When I open my
eyes, it's yellow.

[medic] okay.

And a little spot.

[medic] if you look around, do
we look normal or are we blurry?

- Blurry.
- Blurry. Okay.

Shaun? Shaun?

[terra] shaun, are you okay?

[medic] shaun? Shaun?

Shaun? Shaun?

Shaun, mate, open
your eyes for me.

Shaun?

[medic speaking]

[terra] shaun, he
burned himself out.

I feel like if I had been
able to work harder,

He would've been fine.

So, I blame me for that.

I mean, we actually
had a bond going

And for me, that's hard to find.

One, two, three.

[terra] I'm not worried about
being out here by myself,

I'm worried about him.

[narrator] shaun is
taken to the medical tent

Where he is given iv fluids,

And assessed for a head injury.

Squeeze my fingers with both
your hands tight as you can.

Good.

You had a little bit of a
fall over after you collapsed.

So, unfortunately,
we had to tap you.

Sorry, mate.

[medic] at this stage,
he is improving.

I suspect he has had
low sugar with dehydration

And that's what caused
him to fall in the first place.

Umm, obviously, probably got a
slight concussion from that as well.

[narrator] his exit from the challenge
on day three drops his psr to 6.5.

[shaun] I know I made
the right decision,

But it's very tough
for me because...

I really wanted to
finish the 21 days.

And I hope terra
makes it to the end.

It's day three and
I'm officially alone.

[sighs]

[baboon barking]

[terra] oh, we
finally have animals.

I have major baboon activity
right next to me in this tree.

[baboons barking]

Like, three feet away from me.

[bleep]

- [baboon shrieking]
- [terra grunts] get!

Go.

Go away!

[gibbering]

[baboon gibbering]

[bleep]

More baboons.

There's 15 baboons
up there at least.

They're all sitting right there on
those rocks, just staring at me.

There's another one.

Oh, my heart is pounding.

We are up to about
23 baboons right now.

It could be a bad thing

Because I would hate to
have a troop of baboons

Come down and hurt me.

Especially that big
one, oh, my god.

He's bigger than me.

I've got four arrows on me, and
the best I can do is get two shots off,

If I could even get 'em
out of my bag fast enough.

[narrator reading] armed
with four-inch canines,

Baboons will aggressively
defend their territory

Making up to 30 different
sounds to communicate.

When a baboon yells out, they
could be alerting that I'm here,

And they could be alerting, that something
else is near that I don't want near.

Baboons could be saying
that leopards are in the area.

Go away!

Get.

Get away, go!

[birds chirping]

Over there is a whole set of
cat prints close to my boma.

And, uh, that kinda... Kinda
makes me worried just a little bit.

This is a real threat

From the rocks above.

I'm definitely gonna need a lot more
protection than I can get from this boma.

I don't wanna be attacked, they have
giant fangs and piercing a skull on a human

Would be absolutely
nothing for the cat.

Sucks, but it's just too easy
for a cat or baboon or something

To jump in from the ledge above.

So, I'm gonna have to
move back to the first boma.

That seems to be
the only logical option.

All right.

Still gonna get more of
this thorny stuff just for

Right here and then I
will sort the lane holes.

The plan now is to keep the thorns and
everything that I have around my boma.

And put some more thorny
stuff just to wrap around the edge,

And provide more protection
from the predators that are out here.

Having just enough palm fronds to go across
this whole thing, it's a hell of a feat.

Barricade for wind
blocking is up. [exhales]

Coming along.

I have nobody around me
that will help me with that.

There is no one to
pull from for support.

I'm gonna have to do
as usual and go it alone.

It's a lot of work.

Man, I wish I had a partner.

I cannot go too many more days
in this challenge without eating.

I've got to, got to
figure out something.

[sighs]

This is the toughest thing
I've ever done in my life,

But I'm a different breed, I
do tough things all the time.

[exhales]

Wow, pile of elephant dung.

Elephant poop has a
high nutritional value.

Elephants are not able to digest
seeds that have shells on them,

So it is completely
and perfectly edible.

That is all I got out
of all those nuts.

I know it's probably only a couple
of calories, but better than nothing.

Worth it to me.

[wind blowing]

How long do I starve, before
I finally say that's enough.

When do I call it quits?

When I'm medically tapped
because I face plant into a rock?

Just tired of being by myself.

I'm getting dinner. Another thing
that is changing is this facial hair.

Holy, crap. It hasn't
been there for four years.

During this challenge, I'm not
taking my female hormones.

So my body is going back
to being more masculine

But I cannot focus on
being pretty little terrabella.

If I'm trying to be as strong as I
possibly can in a primitive environment.

There's a crocodile down there.
He's just chilling on the beach.

Medium mike is what I
think I'm gonna call him.

I'm pretty excited about this. What
I need most is protein right now.

Medium mike is a large,
large chunk of protein.

[bleep]

Right now, he's doing everything
he can to protect himself,

I need to wait till
he is back on land.

Whoa!

[sighs]

Dizzy.

I haven't seen mike in days.

There's no sign of
him anywhere. Not yet.

Medium mike is
going up on shore.

I think he's in the best place possible
for me to get a shot off right now.

[yells, groans]

[terra] I'm dirty. I'm gross.

I want to describe how I think I smell right
now. I smell like a zombie's ass[bleep]

If an onion farm and
porta potty had a baby...

And it took a [bleep],

That's how I smell.

None of this is making into air.

I just ripped my nipple off.

Do you copy? We
need a medic down here.

The string came forward,
hit my bag, hit my nipple.

[terra groans]

[medic speaking]

Oww!

[medic] more than 50% of the
nipple detached from the breast.

[terra] it's an
awful big needle.

[narrator] terra has
lacerated half her nipple.

After cleaning the wound,
she receives five stitches.

God!

[terra groaning]

My entire left
[bleep] is on fire.

I felt every stitch, I felt every
poke and it was horrible.

I want to go out and
get this crocodile,

But how can I do that if I
can't even pull my bow back.

I hate just sitting around doing nothing,
but I've gotta be smart about this.

Get some water
and call it a night.

My body is still going through a lot
of healing with my left breast being

Sore and hurting. I
cannot shoot my bow.

I'm not confident that I
can even get a shot off.

[sighing in despair] I have to do
everything in my power to find food.

I need to eat, god!
Do I need to eat.

When everything is reverting back
because the hormones are wearing off,

It starts to feel like you have no control
over anything else going on around you.

I don't quit things,
never been just a quitter.

But if I don't eat
something, I'm done.

I have nothing left.

Wondering what that stuff is right
there, it almost looks like it's moving.

No way, no [bleep] way.

It's a mussel.

There's two!

Three times.

In another 30 seconds, a
minute, this should be good to go.

This feels like a good win because
I've been out here busting my ass.

Feels awesome because
I'm hungry, I need to eat.

I could eat one or two
thousand more of those.

My left breast does still hurt inside
but my nipple doesn't hurt at all.

My body is weak, so I need
as much protein as I can get.

I'm going to attempt...

To take a shot.

The arrow just bounced right off of
him, probably didn't even leave a scratch.

It's a bummer.

Hopefully, mike will have a good future,
good luck, mike, in everything you do

In all your future endeavors.

I wish you the best.

[sighing]

You [bleep].

It's my last day
on this challenge.

I'm ready for...
Ready for extraction.

Let's do this, let's go,
let's get out of here.

I'm so happy to be putting
this fire out for the last time.

It's time to go get the
extraction hike done.

I know it's gonna be hard and I
do not have that many calories

To do this with, but the benefits
of walking out here as terra

Is, I think I'm showing
that I'm still fighting.

Being able to hold
your head high,

Even when you are being beated
down all the time, that's pride.

I need to...

Follow the river up and then cut to
the right. [sighs] it's a long way to go.

[narrator] as the
sun begins to crest,

Terra will head out on a six-mile
hike over slippery boulders

And across the
croc infested river.

She will have to navigate through
dense leopard hunting ground.

All the while staying on the
lookout for deadly puff adders

That are responsible for most
snake bite deaths in africa.

Until she finally
reaches a dirt road.

I need to get on it.

[grunts]

[sighs]

[bleep] there's
crocodile on the beach.

I gotta stay away from them.

[sighing]

It's hell on my feet right
now. Every step hurts.

[groans]

I'm getting a little thirsty.

[sighing] it's a dog print.

Possibly hyena.

You got four toes and then you
do have claws so that's a dog.

Um...

Whew!

Little light-headed.

I'm gonna make it.

I'm gonna make it,
I'm gonna make it.

I think I'm in pretty
good ways now.

Looks like I need to
start going into the woods.

I'm pretty dehydrated at this point, these
rocks are a lot more jagged than the others.

And then the thorns themselves

Are just chewing my feet up.

I see a clearing up ahead.

God willing that's
my extraction.

This is no road.

I see more dirt
and grass and trees.

I don't know... I don't
know how much more I got.

God... [groans]

I'm thinking about everything
that I just went through,

I wanted a challenge, that
if I spoke to anyone else...

There's no way in hell
they could have taken it on.

I wanted tough. I'm
feeling the burn on my feet,

I'm feeling the pain in my legs.

But at this moment,
I'm happy to be in pain.

For god's sakes...

Where is this [bleep] road?

Oh, my god, is this a road?

Oh, my god, it's a road.

[sobbing]

I just did 21
days, eating alone.

I'm so tired, and I'm
so proud of myself.

I literally have no
words right now.

[sniffles]

I did not think I would
be this proud of myself.

I am trans, and not having to worry and
not having to deal with external people,

In social aspects in this whole
21-day journey, clarified things for me.

I'm a survivalist.

I just... I can't even
believe I actually did it.

I'm not a gender, I'm not
a label, I'm just a human.

It's empowering.

[narrator] terra lost 27 pounds.

Her psr goes from 7.6 to 8.2.

I'm going through my
own transitional journey.

And I know now that if I just stick with it
there's nothing I cannot do in this world.

Nothing!

My journey isn't over.

Oh, my god, this is amazing.
