Two survivalists Bulent Gurcan and Sara Burkett are back for redemption in the Mexican jungle but torrential downpours, competing survival styles and a machete accident threaten to send them home early again.

for my redemption.

I'm super-excited, a little
nervous, but here we go.

Bulent: Death is the only
thing that will stop me this time.

Narrator: Deep in the
jungles of southern Mexico,

two survivalists will
get a second chance

to complete their
21-day challenge.

But can they survive in
an area so threatening

even the Spanish
couldn't conquer it?

Sara: It's a tough place to
survive in, but I can do this.

Bulent: It's a lot deadlier than
any place I've been in my life.



Nothing will stop me this time.

have been begging for
redemption ever since.

I've been dying for
a second chance.

I regretted that decision the
moment I stepped in that boat.

will complete that 21 days.

Narrator: Now in the unforgiving
jungles of tres lagunas,

Sara, a mom from Tennessee;

and Bulent, a border-patrol
agent from Washington;

have been chosen to once again

try to complete the survival
challenge of their lives.

Ever since I was medically
tapped in Panama,

I've been thinking
about this redemption.

I think it's gonna
be hot, humid, nasty.

Narrator: In these jungles,
deadly jaguars roam forests

overgrown with thorny,
vicious vegetation,

and stealthy crocodiles patrol
the lagoons with the ability

to swim three times
faster than humans.

Sudden downpours can dump

more than 5 inches
of rain overnight,

leaving the air saturated with
an army of bloodsucking insects.

Last time I was
in the challenge,

I went to Colombia.

My back is hurting.

[ Groans ]

I pushed myself too hard.

My lower back gave up, and I
had to tip out on the 11th day.

I failed not because
I wasn't good enough

or I wasn't prepared enough --

I believe it was something
out of my control.

I've been a
survivalist all my life,

trapping and hunting,
structure building.

It's been a tough year, and I
keep going with that failure,

and it's time to end it.

Last year on my
challenge in Panama...

[ Gasps ] Oh!

...i was on a hike, and I
tripped, and my walking stick

went straight into my eye,
causing a corneal abrasion,

and I had just had
retina-reattachment surgery

the year before.

So I had to be
medically tapped for it.

Both of my boys
are special need.

And the reason I did

the challenge the first
time was for my children --

To show them that no
matter what life throws at them,

they can persevere.

I feel like I let them down,

and I really want to prove
to them that I can do it.

There's a lot of
misconceptions about me

'cause of my blond hair.

People just think
I'm girly-girly.

But I can swing an ax
better than your brother.

This time, I'm ready
to make my 21 days,

and I'm gonna kick
ass here in the jungle.

My nightmare partner

would be somebody
that's a millennial

that thinks they know everything
by watching YouTube channels.

Narrator: Bulent possesses
strong survival skills,

but his gruff personality
could cause friction

with a partner during
the course of 21 days.

He begins with the same
primitive survival rating

that he was given at the
end of his last challenge -- 6.3.

Sara: What I'm looking
for in my partner is nobody

that's so alpha male that
he has a huge ego going on,

thinks he can
dominate the jungle.

Narrator: Sara's strength lies

in her resourcefulness
and resilience,

but the demanding
conditions of the jungle

will test her
primitive skill set.

This your first
time in the jungle?

No, I actually was in Panama
on a challenge before this.

Oh, wonderful.

I went to Colombia. Really?

Yeah. I was there for 11 days.

But when I tapped out,
my back was killing me.

No, I felt like I
quit, but I didn't.

Mm.i mean, I had an eye injury

and had to be medically tapped.

Oh, I'm sorry. But I'm back.

We're back. Right. We're back.

Excited? Hot dang. Yeah.

Sara and Bulent have
been given a firestarter,

and they each brought
a personal item --

Cordage and a machete.

Wow. I also have the map.

Awesome.

Now, I'm guessing that
that right there, that tree,

is this tree. Is this big guy.

Okay. Yeah.

Looks like we have some
hills we're gonna have to cross

to get over to our
fresh water source.

Ooh. We will deal
with some snakes.

And it seems like crocodiles
and jaguars everywhere.

I think we should go
through the mountains or hills

or whatever to
get to this water.

severely tested in the humid,

energy-sapping Mexican jungle,

where temperatures
soar into the 90s.

Hiding in the underbrush

are over 60 species
of coral snakes...

That possess the most lethal
venom in the western hemisphere.

Besides getting hurt
on your last challenge,

what was the hardest part?

Putting up with my partner.

Oh. [ Laughs ]

Not what I kind of
want to hear, but, yeah.

That's okay.

See, you have to be realistic.

You can't get along
with everybody.

You can try.

Sara: I am a big team player.

Even if we don't get along,

I still will have his
back no matter what.

I just hope we get along.

high up in the jungle canopy,

Sara and Bulent will be watched
by intimidating howler monkeys,

whose cries are the
loudest of all land animals --

What are your thoughts on
drinking this water straight?

It's, quite frankly,
never a good idea.

And we did have
one hell of a hike.

We lost a lot of water.

So, right now,
I'm quite thirsty.

Sara: I do feel dehydrated,

and I'm extremely
sensitive to the heat.

I got thirsty, and I decided
to drink out of the river.

I really think it's
not a smart idea,

but the water did taste good.

It doesn't smell weird.

All right, so, what do you think

of this natural area over here?

What I'm thinking -- this arch,

I think we should be able to

That's what I was

I mean, it's simple. It's...

lean our sticks up

and go with a
lean-to for tonight?

This is a good location.
It's by the river. It's flat.

start cutting the branches.

Bulent: My partner seems cool.

She's also a lot
younger than me.

So there's definitely a
life-experience gap in there.

Sara: My first impression
of Bulent is, he's very nice,

knowledgeable.

I think we're opposites,

but I think we're gonna
get along really good.

God, that's a good knife.

This knife is
super-very-well-made.

It got a nice weight to it.

You want a sharp blade.
You want a balanced blade.

If you can't control
the knife 100%,

it will cut you.

And when it cuts you,
it's not gonna be pretty.

In an environment like that,

you're looking at about
2, 3 days for infection.

On the fifth day, god help you.

The plan is to cut
down some tree limbs

and start stacking them
to make us a shelter.

♪♪

I'm getting tired.

Sara: I did a stupid
rookie mistake

and let this come
back on my foot.

The question is, are you

go rinse it off in the water.

Bulent: In her last challenge,
my partner cut herself.

She cut herself
on day 1 already.

Still bleeding, but
I think it'll be okay.

So, the first
night, I anticipate,

will be pretty chilly.

We have our shelter done,

but I am very
sensitive to the cold.

Without fire out here,
it's gonna be miserable.

We have a beautiful fire going,

but we're starting to
hear howler monkeys a lot.

The jungle's
coming alive tonight.

Bulent: No sleep at all.

The night is way too long.

So, we made it.

These howler monkeys,
they screamed for hours.

Where are you headed?

I'm gonna take
off, go look for food.

I'm walking slow on purpose,

trying to be more
conservative this time.

Last time, I pushed
myself too hard.

Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow!

[Bleep] Ow!

They're getting me.

I'm not saying I'm not
gonna make a mistake.

I just don't want to
make the same mistakes

that I did last time.

I'm just weaving
the vines in and out

so that there's no holes.

Fish will go into
it 'cause they think

it's a natural habitat
of water for them.

Narrator: Sara is making a fish
trap using Mexican coral vines,

which are sturdy and flexible.

Her design requires
two separate baskets.

Sara: I'm making a large one
and a smaller one that fits inside,

creating a funnel to
kind of guide the fish in.

The fish will go
through the hole,

and they won't come back
through because the hole's too small.

They don't think they
can get through it.

We're gonna catch
a fish. I'll tell you that.

[ Howling softly ]

Bulent: I hear the
monkeys in the distance.

I don't see any tracks, any
sign of animals, anything.

[ Monkey bellowing ]

This forest.

No wonder the Spaniards
couldn't conquer the jungle.

There's nothing to eat in it.

It's finished.

♪♪

♪♪

All right. I hope it works.

♪♪

Bulent: No sleep.

I saw two lightnings earlier.

♪♪

Yeah. Rain is coming.

[ Thunder crashing ]

♪♪

Yeah, it's raining.

The worst thing it could
possibly do right now.

It sucks.

All right, so, last
night sucked.

I was cold all night.

We do have a fire, but we
went through almost all the wood,

like I knew we would.

So, tonight, I'm
gonna triple that.

All right. The main priority
right now is firewood.

So I'm going to go and try
to find as much as possible.

Okay. if you'll
just keep it alive.

Firewood's my big
thing, I have to have it.

My partner seems to be
obsessed about this fire.

I wish he would help
me get the firewood.

That would mean a lot to me.

When you don't have
fire, it gets you down.

That is an unnecessary,
unproductive emotion.

Sara: Having done
this challenge before,

I know how miserable
the nights can get.

[ Thunder crashes ]

Small trips.

It should be common
sense to help your partner.

Bulent: Obviously, it is
not like this is Siberia,

it's 20-below.

I think that constant
need of getting firewood

is a complete unnecessary
waste of energy.

Hopefully it keeps going,
and the rain doesn't put it out.

It's gonna be a
long rest of the night.

Last night just sucked.

No matter what we did,
we still got soaking wet.

I may have a nervous

It's the one thing I want in
this challenge, is this fire.

A nervous breakdown

is not gonna bring
you back the fire.

And then how
would that be useful?

The one thing I want,
you could help me out with.

I know we have a firestarter,
but if it just pours rain,

and we have no tinder,
then we're screwed.

I just need to take

I don't find her as
strong as she should be.

His approach and my approach

He knows how
important it is to me,

so he should care a little bit.

Sara: I'm not feeling as
emotional right now about Bulent

not helping me get firewood.

I just get aggravated
at certain things.

And when I get too
aggravated, I cry like a little baby.

Bulent: So, she
panics like crazy.

Factors in the equation
of the challenge --

The hunger, the thirst,

tiredness, the
mental instability.

No. Nada. Zilch.

♪♪

Bulent: At this point,

there's always two
aspects to survival --

Psychological and physiological.

I'm looking for
snails right now.

My strength is the
psychological part.

However, the
physiological one is the one

that is slowing me down
because lack of food.

[ Monkey bellowing ]

Sara: I really,
really want protein.

♪♪

No, there's no fish.

I'm just gonna retie
it and throw it back in.

Very disappointing.

[ Monkey bellowing ]

I found two more.

Guess what.

I've got nine snails.

I don't eat freshwater snails.

So, why would you
not eat the snails?

'Cause I do not eat
freshwater snails.

That's not the reason.
That isthe reason.

The snails carry parasites.

Okay.

Well, I feel bad
for the parasites.

They're about to get consumed.

Narrator: Snails can contain
a parasite called rat lungworm

that can burrow into the brain,

causing serious
infections like meningitis.

There's a lot of things
that carry parasites.

If you cook them long enough,

I think it will somewhat
diminish that parasite effect.

But we'll see. It's brain worm.

I got too much brain anyway.

I need some of that.

95% of the people

that actually get the
parasite from the snails die.

Cha-ching!

I like that.

5% survival. Perfect.

My kind of thing.

See, we don't look at life
and death the same way,

that there's
normal cycle of life.

Death is a normal cycle of life,

but I plan on going
home to my children.

Mm.

I would go 21 days without
food before I eat the snails.

Bulent: If you think about it,

I eat over 3,000 calories a day.

Doesn't even make 100 calories.

So as far as nutrition-wise,

no, it doesn't really make
that much of a difference.

But psychologically, it helps.

Sara: It's extremely
aggravating that every time

I check my fish basket,
there's nothing there.

Very disappointing.

So I'm going to bust up these
snails to use them as bait.

Bulent: I don't know why the
fish basket is not functioning,

but hopefully
with different bait,

it'll work, and
we'll get some fish.

So, before you put that back..

Yeah, I was just seeing
if I see tracks down there.

He's probably watching us
somewhere on top of a tree.

So that just tells me there's
food here somewhere.

So we'll set up a snare.

We need sticks to
put around the side

so they won't go around it.

Narrator: To build their
snare trap, Bulent and Sara

first insert sticks
into the ground

to guide the animal toward it.

Bulent: I'm just happy
I brought my cordage.

Narrator: Using his cordage,
Bulent anchors one end to a tree

and forms a loop
on the other end

with a slipknot.

Setting up the loop
between two sticks,

the loop will tighten
when an animal steps in.

Once animal says,
"there's nowhere else to go,"

his head gets through
here and gets snapped.

The more he pulls,
the more he chokes.

[ Insects buzzing ]

Ow.

We just got hit by a
million mosquitoes.

...the more mosquito
babies got to drink our blood.

It's amazing how
little of a creature

noise in the jungle.

This is their jungle.

They're just trying to survive
in the conditions they're in.

energy trying to find food in here,

and we were unsuccessful.

We're both hungry.
We haven't pretty much

had no more than 100
calories the entire time.

before the extraction day.

excellent source of energy.

but without knowing it,

tired and hungry,

so I can't wait
to get out of here.

And we have to go 'round
about these to our extraction point.

That's a long hike.

Narrator: Sara and Bulent
face an exhausting 4-mile trek

along thorny terrain,

crawling with fighting fire
ants, stinging scorpions,

and with deadly
Jaguar tracking them.

Bulent: Right now, I'm just
concentrated on getting there

without stepping on
something horrible.

Narrator: They will then
need to cross a lagoon,

avoiding crocodiles,
whose bite force is stronger

than a great white shark,

and then search for the access
road, where they'll be rescued.

[ Breathes sharply ]

There's a lot of pricklies,
so watch your feet.

♪♪

[ Gasps ]

[ Breathing heavily ]

Yeah, I just stepped
on something big.

Sara: Knowing
that my ride is just

on the other side
of this lagoon,

that's a lot of
motivation for me.

think it is? 150 meters.

There's still
swimming right there.

crocodiles in there.

And, plus, I'm not a
long-distance swimmer.

It's not gonna be easy.

Bulent: The last
challenge, I've failed,

and it sucked tremendously.

I'm not gonna quit.

Death is the only thing
that will stop me this time.

Maybe we could hold on to one
of those logs and float across.

about the swim for safety issues.

If any of us get a
