[upbeat music]

- Welcome to My Design Rules,

the interior design reality
show that follows the journey

of three competing design duos

as they transform three empty
cluster homes at the eye

of Africa, Gulf and
residential estate outside

of Johannesburg, South Africa
into lavish living spaces.

The goal to have
the judges rule them

to be the best new
interior design talent

in South Africa
unlocking a bright career

and R100,000 cash prize.

Last time we introduced you

to our three dynamic design
duos and their mentors.

And so now the competition
can begin in earnest.

But before we can reveal

which room they'll be
tackling first let's recap

to get you up to speed.

Last time on My Design Rules
we met our three design duos

that will battle it out in
the name of great design.

They are team House and Leisure.

- We've known each
other for six years

and since we've known each
other that long I believe

that we're gonna
be like the bomb

in this competition,
we're gonna kill it.

- Team VISI.

- So we are definitely
going to be the best duo.

- Yeah.

- And team Habitat

- We are super
duper over the moon.

- Stars, sun.

- The galaxy, excited.

- The three white box homes
that they'll be transforming

are located at the stone
quarter development

in the magnificent
eye of Africa, Gulf

and residential estate in
the south of Johannesburg.

The design duos drew keys
from a hat to determine

which of the units they would
be decorating before getting

to view their empty
canvas for the first time.

Each design duo will benefit
from the expert advice

and experience of
magazine editor mentors

who will guide them
on their journey.

Now it's time to get things
started with the brief

on their first challenge.

- The competition
is about to start.

- And we have no words.

- Terereree.

- This is our first
challenge we don't know

what to expect we're about
to get our first briefing

and it's so nerve-wracking.

- We're gonna bring that
razzle dazzle, we're ready

to get in there, get through

the walls, build some
walls, tear down some.

- Tear down a lot of walls.

- And bring in some chandeliers.

- Welcome to your
first challenge.

Over the next 14 weeks
you'll be decorating one room

or space every two weeks to
ultimately create a dream home.

Your first challenge is to
turn a white space into a room

that will have your friends
queuing out the door to visit.

It's the guest bedroom, you
have two weeks, good luck.

- Do you want a guest room

that's impressive,
invites the guests?

- Says check in man, enjoy.

- Our design duos
have an overall cash
budget of R300, 000.

That's over and above

the many generously
sponsored products.

That means it's really
dedicated to decor elements.

It's the first challenge
for our design duos

and that means the
outcome will reveal

the front runners
in the competition.

Key to their success is meeting

with their mentors to
discuss their vision.

[upbeat music]

- Meeting with Tiaan for the
guest room, we actually worried

that are we prepared
enough first of all

because we haven't
seen him in a while

and will he actually
like what do we have.

- Yes.

- So for an over
arching kind of mood

for the guest bedroom,
what are you going for?

What's the mood of the room?

- Okay colorwise we
introduced a bit of peach,

a lighter version of peach
just to warm the room up

since it's on the darker
side of the house.

And then behind the bed we have
like an artifact in emerald.

- I mean in terms of the
furniture I see that you've kind

of kept it quite like
light in terms of

the treatment and the wood,
what's the thinking there?

- Well the furniture
we actually looked

at the more neutral stuff
because we're trying

to keep it very calm
and almost feminine.

- So last time
you guys mentioned

that you want to collaborate
with some artists

for some original
artwork in the room

- So in regards to artists
we've got Tatenda Chidora

who actually volunteered to
give us exhibition prints

and then we tried Vusi
Beauchamp which we have here

on the screen and
unfortunately he's in Durban

so we couldn't have
him on board for now.

And then at the end
Tshepo nominated someone.

[Tshepo and Banele laughing ]

- So much pleasure.

[ Tshepo and Banele laughing]

- And Tiaan actually
really likes it,

we thought he wouldn't
like it but he agreed

with everything that
we came up with.

- I was actually so
impressed that he loved it.

- 'Cause we weren't prepared.

[Tshepo and Banele laughing]

[upbeat music]

- We are now having a
little meeting about

what we're planning to do
with the guest bedroom.

- What we are trying to do is
like do a modern jungle inside

the bedroom like
a concrete jungle.

- Our first idea was wallpaper
and we love this wallpaper.

It's very exciting,
it's very vibrant.

- But we also need
to consider the fact

that we don't make it too much.

Take the wallpaper and see
how everything is gonna look.

- This is too
bright, can you see.

We are applying our paint
to test it out and see

if it will work with our ideas
and to our shock and horror.

- The paint is wrong.

- I love the wallpaper and
I'm very glad they had a liter

of paint here because
once we started painting,

we realized it's too bright.

It's the wrong color.

- So what do you
think about this one?

- It's dark but it's nice.

- Mpho and I have decided to
create an imaginary client

for our entire house to
give us more direction

and just to focus us, okay.

- Doing this has impressed
me endlessly instead

of just fixing this home you
created a character, a person

who's going to live
here tell me about him.

- So this is a photographer
named Travis Stuurman.

He's more formal and
simple guy so we want

to make this house to.

- Real.

- Be like him instead
of to represent him.

[upbeat music]

- So busy shopping
for lights and.

- Minus one.

- Minus yeah, minus our mentor,

she's not feeling
well in hospital.

We'll be still standing strong
we had Farrah to help us

who was sent by Amanda

- I'm a bit nervous to
go shopping with Sphero ,

I don't know if she can
manage the budget with you.

- Just let me spend what
I need to explain then

the budget will
manage just fine.

- Thank goodness you
haven't got the pen.

- OMGG, I see this
light and it's the one.

I gotta have it, no I gotta
have it for real guys.

This is it.

- 80, 000, for a lamp,
Abiah no, we can't.

- Brad is the budget.

B for bread or budget,
no too expensive

so this slide as soon as
I saw it I went, OMG no.

- Declined.

- Brad you're not making
this very easy for me,

but like if we have to choose
something today, this maybe

this is alternative,
this one right here.

- How's the budget looking Brad?

- It suits my budget.

- I think this for
a second option

is a very good idea, we
can play with the shapes

and sizes, bring
the jungle theme in.

- Fabulous, I love it
so this is the one.

- The lights that we
picked are quite nice,

they fit our jungle theme.

- Absolutely.

- Right now while we're shopping

- It's going down.

- It's going down.

- And I'm talking breaking down

the wall kind of down my nerves.

- An en suite for
our guest room.

- Sure.

- So we managed to convince
him to smash that wall down.

- We were not letting
it go, something had

to go down and it
happened to be that wall.

- Yes, if they're not
knocking it down now, Abiah

would be leaving
shopping with his hand.

- And now we're
gonna get my hammer

and I would bash it down.

[Abiah and Brad laughing]

Probably now I've been
doing the cell black tango

which is not good
for team Habitat.

- Talk about a smashing start
after the break we find out

if team Habitat's
decision to break

through the wall was a
success or if it left a hole

in their design, stay tuned.

[upbeat music]

Welcome back to My Design
Rules, it's time now

to add some personality
to the rooms

with interesting furnishing
pieces and accessories.

Team House and Leisure
have chosen to go

with a custom wall mural
in the guest bedroom

and are seeking the
advice of South Africa's

leading paint technique
expert, Claire Bond.

Team house and leisure
is at Plascon Spaces

for some paint advice.

- Claire is showing us
how to actually mix up

the paints like there are
different brushes for mixing,

there's a brush for application

and then there's also a
brush to mix everything.

- Blended.

- Yes basically blending, yeah.

- Okay James, now we're going

to start creating
our ink faded effect.

- The most important
thing is to wet

that section of wall first
with your piece of cloth.

The paint dries really
fast so you need dampness

to make the effect look blotchy.

And you apply it left to right.

- And we are so
excited getting advice

from Claire with how to go
about with our technique

and it's going quite well.

- Okay here we are, we finished
our first layer, alright?

Now we move quickly
onto the second color.

You just drag it a bit and
then you get a lovely effect

so you get that light and dark.

- So you can just see I
move the brush in and out

and you just gently blend
it like this with your brush

and then your
technique is finished.

- I'm worried that since
you have to do our feature

or you get it right or
not, it freaks me out.

- Yes.

- We have decided to call one
of our favorite designers.

I'm very inspired by
him, Leonardo Designs.

I absolutely love your
dodecahedron piece.

- Thank you.

- But we're thinking
of editing it slightly

just to fit in our room.

- What did you have in mind?

- So we were thinking
of something like this

which has more of a
tapered shape to it.

- What we can do is look at
creating more vertical facets

to the table which I think
would look very, very nice.

- So I was thinking
that we should go

with a gold rich pearl
finish so that we get

that more inspired gold
shape, diamond mixed

with a little bit of gold there.

- A great color to work with
so the next step we're going

to go to the cutting phase
and then thereafter we'll go

to welding and then you'll
see the finished product.

So you're looking at
about three weeks.

- Three weeks?

- It should take
about three weeks

but I can see Lesego is
very concerned about it,

so we'll try and push it
and get it out in a week.

- We are walking the dogs
trying to meet a deadline.

- Yeah and stick to the
budget, you know, we had

to visit the guys who are
making our collaboration.

Oh, yes, yes, yes.

Guys no this is unbelievable.

Wow, you've taken
a zebralicious,

if we don't win the challenge
I swear am gonna object

to the panel and my
objection your honor.

- Thank you.

Wow, wow, wow.

In the time that
you had I'm actually

so surprised you
could have done it.

- How long did it take you?

- It takes me like a one week
working day night to come

with like this piece I was
working with my brother

And I thank the guys I
work with for their support

to come with this
like marvelous piece.

- I would start with saying
thank you for like working

with us and making
something so amazing.

Like it's something so
new and it's like, wow.

Brad I think you should
try sit down so we can see

the effect I mean
a whole baby girl.

- Hello.

- Wow it's like,
welcome to the jungle.

Well please hold your
flowers, you are the queen.

[upbeat music]

- So now we're at Oriental
plaza, we are shopping

for our curtains and
Radha is showing us

the different fabrics they
have and what we can do

with so many options
to pick from.

- Radha do you have organza?

- Yes we have organza but
why you want to use organza?

- Not really my
grandmaster uses that.

- You know youngsters
should be looking

at something like
this here with linen

that's in fashion now.

- And you know that Radha
actually took you serious

when you're talking
about organza.

- I was serious.

- I was thinking to myself.

Oh, this is lovely.

- That is beautiful.

- So this is going to be
like the main curtain so.

- That's your main
curtain and you want

to put a sheer
curtain behind this?

- Oh yes, definitely.

- Because these are all
the sheer curtains here.

- The style we're looking for

is actually adding
eyelets to curtains.

- The main curtain.

- Yes, only because I've
actually looked into that style

for a long time but and it's
still classic I must say.

- Now I'm serious getting
into like shopping mode,

he's turning me to a bridal
joke like finale what the hell?

- I'm trying to get
you ready for marriage.

- Team VISI is back
at Leonardo Design

to see their
collaboration complete.

- It's so beautiful .

- And I'm also excited that
Frank can actually pull this

with such a noticed period.

- Your ideas come out
so beautifully with
the straight facet

coming down, yeah, it's
really worked out well.

And the color the gold
has worked out perfectly.

- Perfectly.

- We finally have our
beautiful golden diamond.

- And someone thinks that is
going to be on her fingers

which is not a wedding ring,
this is a table by the way so.

- Okay.

[upbeat music]

- We're shopping
for artificial grass

and it's not for the outside.

- It's always been
on the inside.

[Abiah and Brad laughing]

How is you, I look okay.

[dog barking]

- We are trying to
negotiate a discount.

- You know and voice
is wa-wa-wa-wa.

Whats up, but you know
patches are gonna shame,

can hit on both.

- How can I help you guys?

- Well, we are looking
to find flooring

for our guest bedroom.

- Yeah.

- We walked in here and
we thought this is it,

like this is it.

- This is it, okay well this
is actually our putting green

so you know if you put this
in the bedroom just make sure

that you buy a putter
as well so you can.

- Absolutely and that's a
multi-functional bedroom.

- Yes.

- Where they can patch
and then get into bed.

- And all sorts
of other patches.

- Okay guys this is
be the golf green

that you saw in the showroom

and then you were asking
about the longer grass.

- Longer grass.

- Here you can see
the longer grass.

- Yeah.

- Okay.

- That looks like real grass.

- Like the real thing.

- Sure.

- And here on the wall
behind you you can see

there's some samples
that you can find

with you and then
you can go and play.

- And actually see.

- How it will fit into
your dicho scheme.

So you're welcome to use some.

- Okay, I'm gonna, that one.

- Yeah.

- Yeah, there's a huge,
massive variety of grass, yeah.

- Ginormous, but I swear the one

that we got is the
holden one, it's the.

- Winner

- It is.

- It is.

- Grass on the
guest bedroom floor,

it seems our design duos are
certainly not holding back.

And so I hope the grass
is indeed always greener.

It's so exciting to see progress
so after the break I pop in

to see how the designs
are coming along.

[upbeat music]

Welcome back to My Design Rules.

The halfway mark in the
competition should be the point

where our design duos are
halfway through the challenge.

But is this a case of

the glass being half
full or half empty?

[upbeat music]

- It's a halfway mark and it
feels like we just started.

- Oh my, it really does, it
feels like we've just started.

- Yeah.

- My love.

- There's a lot of
challenges going on.

- Everything is happening
at the same time.

- So we are a bit worried
about the time frame.

- Yeah.

- Are we gonna finish on time?

Are we gonna have everything
done nicely and correctly?

That's the biggest
fear that we have now.

- Most of our stuff
have already arrived

and it's looking
promising that we're going

to be done on time.

We're quite
confident about that.

- Yes, and it's so exciting
to see everything just like.

- Come together.

- Come together yeah,
it's really exciting.

- But you know what?

That mural it's still
giving me heart attacks.

- And he's just on
my back through heart

and not giving me
rest to actually work

on the mural, you
ruined my confidence.

- I'm sorry.

[upbeat music]

- This is our room do you know?

- It looks quite cool
I like the colors

but I mean halfway
done and you guys are,

just got basically
paint on the wall.

- Yeah, so basically everything
was, we were quite stressing

about the paint we first
selected the wrong paint

and now we have the
correct one which I think.

- But.

- It turned out to be.

- What's the but.

- It's beautiful but it's
taking forever to go on.

- Yeah.

- So we still need another
final coat of paint.

We still need to
paint our ceiling

and corners off and order and.

- And we also need to
put wallpaper today.

- Exactly.

- Okay, you guys have got
you halfway got a week

to finish all of the
stuff and a lot seems

like it still needs to be
done at every point along

the way you've had delays.

So are you guys going
to be finished in time?

- Yeah we are going to
be finished on time.

Look at this it comes with
a lifetime of achievement

and experience if you place
your projects according

to time and spec
everything will be done

and you're looking forward
to the final product.

- Well guys I want to be
honest with you it seems

like you're very reliant
on your suppliers I suggest

you roll up your
sleeves and start doing

some of the painting
yourselves otherwise you guys

aren't going to be done
all right, so good luck.

- It's about time we
started doing that Lesego.

- Let's do this.

- Yep.

[upbeat music]

- Let's see what they've got.

It's a Banele.

How's it going?

- Good, how are you?

- I'm very good, it's
nice to see you guys.

- Nice to see you too.

- So what's in the boot here?

- We've got a job paint
chair that we just collected.

- Oh wow.

- I'm very excited for it.

- It looks awesome but listen
what I'm very surprised

about is there seems
to be a third member

of your team, so
what's going on here?

- This is Nicole,
she drives us around.

- So why do you
guys need a driver?

- Because none of us can drive.

- At all.

- Well listen, you guys
have been warned about this

from the beginning
from one of the judges.

How has this
impacted the project?

- Financially it's been a strike

because we actually hadn't
planned to have someone extra

to actually help us with the
driving but we really needed

that because we couldn't
get around with that.

- Ever since she came on
board it's making life

so simple because we can go
to like more than one place

at the same time whereas
with public transport

you can't do that, it's
such a bad ass, yes.

- And they're paying you, right?

- Yeah.

- Right, let's turn our
attention to what's going on

in there I mean,
what's happening?

How are you guys doing,
how are you feeling?

- Like honestly I'm a bit
stressed about the wall art

that we still have to do,
the few layers that we did,

it's not looking
as I hoped it will.

- Only because he doesn't
trust the process,

he's hoping that instantly
the artwork is done.

But now it's like
layers and layers

and layers before it is done.

- I think that's the problem.

I'm imagining the end
before we even get there.

- And he also doesn't
trust the artist.

- I do trust the artist,
please come down.

- Has he been a
nightmare to work with

or everything you could have
expected from a partner?

- No, I think we work
very well like in regards

to we understand what needs
to be done, we're able

to delegate tasks to each other.

I deal with a lot of admin and.

- I deal a lot with the
creative side of the project.

- Well I'm glad you
guys are giggling now

but you guys need to
get a lot done still

so I'll help you carry your
box you don't have to pay me.

- Thank you I appreciate it.

- Lets roll.

- I'd like to take
a photo of you two.

Man shouldn't you be working I
come and check up on you once

and you guys are standing
outside looking like she models.

- Sure I know it looks
like we just chin chilling

but it's none of that.

We're waiting for
the contractors.

- Our dream team.

- Well, looks like your
dream team has arrived.

- Yay.

[dog barking]

- Dream team girls.

- Hi.

[upbeat music]

- So Brad you've
brought in your nieces

to be your specialist
contractors

to finish off your chandeliers
but what still needs

to be done, what has been done,

where's the drama in
this guest bedroom?

- Sure the drama is
wall-to-wall I mean ceiling

to the every way there's
drama because we started out

with banging out the wall
which is quite dramatic

to create an en suite
taste bedroom experience.

Yeah so we're still waiting
for painting to be done, door

to be finished, carpets
to be be put in,

so halfway mark we
are a bit stressed.

- It seems like a lot
still needs to get done.

- Sure and the more you say

that the more I get
there's not enough time.

Yeah our furniture is arriving
so hopefully we'll be able

to pull it off together
and should be jungle fever

like jungle fever water walls,
chandeliers, grass, zebras.

- Well the million
dollar question

is will you guys
be done in time?

- All I can say is for
my nerves I hope so.

[upbeat music]

The paint effects is
quite hard actually only

because I'm working
with tones of green

so it's getting it
consistently like dark green

and fading it so
that's quite hard.

What do you think Tshepo?

- I'm stressed, I love my friend

but I wish we had a specialist.

[upbeat music]

- We have very little time
left and we've been trying

to push the wallpaper to get in

and now our corners is not dry.

So if the wallpaper and the
wet corners touch it's going

to make ugliness on
top of our wallpaper

Pretty defeated,
pretty defeated.

- Wow, so our design
viewers have 99 problems

but time management
seems to be the big one

with the deadline looming
for this challenge,

the outcome is anybody's guess.

- Will it be triumph or tragedy

when the judges make
their house score.

To see how that unfolds tune
in for more on My Design Rules.

[upbeat music]
