McLeod's Daughters (2001–2009): Season 1, Episode 20 - Lover Come Back - full transcript

Claire sells Loverboy to Nick. Tess is tired of Alex' lack of romance. Jodi is so obsessed with the memory of Alberto that she is shirking her work, and when Becky reproaches her, Meg threatens that she and Jodi will leave if Claire doesn't fire Becky.

- [Narrator] Previously

- [Alberto] Your nose is perfect.

- The washing.

- Thanks, hun, you shouldn't have.

- No, I didn't.

- [Alex] What, you didn't do the washing?

- Didn't wanna kill the romance.

(cows mooing)
(energetic music)

- Sorry, Lover Boy.
(cow moos)

One of you boys have to go.

Up you go.

Come on.
- Go on.

- [Claire] In your own time, go on.

Come on.

Come on.
- Go on!

- Don't be scared.

There you go, get up there.

(suspension creaking)

Oh, man.

I hope he doesn't stuff the suspension.

Harry'll charge me for sure.

- I will admit that Alex is
handsome and strong and sexy.

But, expecting me to do his
washing and making cups of tea,

like, hello?

(relaxed rock music)

- [Claire] He's a country boy.

- [Tess] So is Nick and I bet
he wouldn't act like that.

- Hm, how do you know?

(clanking)
(cow mooing)

- Whoa!

He's doin' the Macarena back there?

Sure we should be selling
Nick a maniac bull?

- He's not a maniac.

And we want this sale.

(cow mooing)

With the money, I can start
building the new yards

for the Quarter Horse training.

If this one arrives today.

- It's like we're an old,
married couple already.

You know, I don't want to change him,

but there's got to be more
than this, doesn't there?

I mean, sometimes I just want to talk,

you know, just like lie in bed and--

- Tayler'll have some
ideas about the yards.

Yeah, I'll call him.

- You haven't heard a thing I've said.

- Sure I have.

You don't know what you want, Tess.

(cow mooing)

(hammer thudding)

- You know, she doesn't
know what she wants,

that's her problem.

We were having a great time, you know.

Things were starting to heat
up and then all of a sudden,

hands off, get away, we have to talk.

- Right.

- So I backed off.

Yeah, well, let's go riding.

Nah, but she wants to talk.

Alright then, well let's go shooting.

But no, she wants to talk.

- You thought about talkin' to her?

- Talk, talk, talk.

That not what she wants, Nick.

She's playing games, here.

That's what's going on.

- Not the usual ones.

Tess is more complex than that, Alex.

- Oh right, yeah.

Relationship advice from the hermit.

- Suit yourself, do nothing.

- Yeah, yeah, let her stew.

She's not going anywhere.

- You sure, eh?

- What do you know about it?

- Oh, I know enough.

- Good morning.

- Good morning.

Sleep okay?

(moaning)
(smooching)

- [Angela] Unusually.

- Angela, this is my brother, Alex.

- Hi.
- How you doing?

- Well, I have to get back to town so,

I'll see you in a week?

- Can't wait.

- You drive carefully.

- Okay.

Just a bump on my head.

- You should get it checked out, Tess.

You can't work if you're concussed.

- Nah, I can't, mate.

I've got a lot of translation to do.

- Oh, and of course, this is
the most important thing, huh?

I'll give you a hand.

(tender music)

- He's a bit flighty.

Could be nerves.

But if you can't draft him,

he'll need a good
temperament to get very far.

- Sweet potato.

- Sorry, Becky, I forgot
you don't like sweet potato.

- Or Brussels sprouts, and I
really love curried sausage.

- You can always cook your own meals.

- Can you pass the gherkins?

- You can get them yourself.

- And on top of it all,

I find out if Blaze is
pregnant, any moment now.

She's a bit jumpy.

- [Tess] Yeah.

- [Claire] It could it's time.

- Tess, can you please ask

- You know where you can put them?

- Okay, stop.

- Because I know it's not true.

- Well that's great,
you see love is great.

Now, you've got to ask yourself why again.

If you're so sure that Alberto loves you,

then why does it matter what Becky says?

- He does love me.

None of you understand!

- Well done, Tess.

So, um, what are you so upset about?

- I'm not.

- Why do they get so upset?

I'm only trying to help.

- Becky said you got some seeds.

What are you planting?

- You're not listening
to me at all, are you?

- Course, it's entirely up to you.

Your pick, they're your choice.

- Good, then you don't have a
problem with me planting hemp.

- Hemp?

As in marijuana?

- Hemp, as in minus marijuana, no THC.

Or very little, less than 1%.

- Is it even legal?

- Well it is, if you're
granted a trial license.

I put my proposal in and the
health commission gave me one.

- Hm, sounds complicated.

- Simplest crop in the world to grow.

Soil here's perfect,
it's practically a weed.

- Hmm, and what are you gonna do with it?

- Sell it, there's a big
market for industrial hemp.

all sorts of things.

Nothing can go wrong.

- With farming, something
always goes wrong.

- It's only dead, what's the problem?

- Because I get it if you

- So go out on a limb, for once.

to be in love, isn't it?

- It is, just so long

as it doesn't stop you
concentrating on other things.

- [Jodi] Like what?

- Like work.

- Oh, okay.

Here's work, really boring.

And here's Alberto.

(whistles)

I nearly faint just thinking about him.

- Maybe you'd feel better
if you did the dishes.

- Ah, yeah, no worries, but I need music.

Italian composers are so--

- Let me guess, amazing?

- Yeah.

(giggling)

(speaking in foreign language)

Alberto.

(speaking in foreign language)

- Alex called again, today.

Are you gonna call him?

- No.

- Is that dealing with people?

- We're not talking about me.

- Why not?

- Because we're talking about you.

Why won't you deal with
Becky and Meg and Jodi?

- Why again?

What are you, a counselor,
a farmer, or a lover?

- Why can't I be all three?

(thunder rumbling)

What was that?

- Thunder.

Told you it was gonna rain.

- No, it's probably just
an electrical storm.

It won't actually rain.

(rain pattering)

It's just a light sprinkle.

It's perfect, it's um,
it's good for the seeds.

(thunder rumbling)
(rain pattering)

(gentle music)

- Well, looks like the rain's
washed the top layer off.

- All my seeds.

Go on, get out!

Get outta here you stupid birds, go!

(birds squawking)

Shoo!

Shoo!

- You gotta get those trusses up today.

Maybe even get the roof up.

Then, you can go home for a while.

- Talking got me nowhere, Nick.

- Yeah, what'd you talk about?

- You know, just the
weather, last night's rain.

(Nick giggling)

Well, she hung up on me.

- Yeah surprise, surprise.

- Oh fine, well you tell me then, Nick,

what would you say to her?

- I don't know.

- Come on, put your money
where your mouth is.

Nick, just tell me, what would you say?

- Okay, okay!

Tess, I think you are the strongest,

most exotic creature I've ever seen.

(tender music)

To be with you would be perfect.

(laughing)

- Does Angela actually fall
for that sort of bilge?

- No, she likes me for my bum.

- Oh, get away!

- Let's get this shed up.

(laughing)

- I thought Jodi was coming with us?

- She's busy with the washing.

- Really?

- She does her fair share.

She's just a bit distracted with Alberto.

Tess, I know you think
I'm being hard on Becky,

but she sets a bad example for Jodi.

It's the age difference.

Becky's had more life experience.

There are some things Jodi
needs to be protected from.

Tess, you know what I'm talking about.

- Yeah what, like her reputation?

- It's not just that.

- You've got a lover, Meg.

And I've been known to sleep with Alex.

- It's Becky's attitude.

She's, I mean, I know
she's had a tough time,

but she's got such a cynical outlook.

I want Jodi to have her dreams.

And to keep them a bit longer.

- Hey there.

Jodi out of bed yet?

- Becky, maybe you and I should talk.

- I think Claire can sort it out.

Let her choose.

- Lover Boy's gone walkabout again.

And trashed Nick's shed on the way out.

- That bull's trying to tell us something.

- [Claire] Well, we're
not taking him back,

we need the money.

- What does Nick say about that?

- Well, Nick's furious.

We offered to help with the
shed, calm him down a bit.

- We'll all help.

- No, I'll take Tess with me
to Wilgul, and I'd like you

and Jodi to finish shoveling
out the grain silo.

With Becky.

- The three of us?

Together?

- Yeah.

Come on, we'll take the Merc.

- Better get Jodi.

- There is no real reason.

It is silly.

and a bit of scaffold.
