Everybody showing their teeth or, like,
trying to do their best.

Like, I'm gonna die trying. Period.

Sienna, congratulations again on your win.

[Heidi] Yes! This really is happening!

Okay, designers, we have
a special guest with us.

Please welcome the Chief Design Officer

of Champion North America,
Ned Munroe.

Hi, Ned.

I'm so excited to be here.

Well, we're excited to have you here.

I love what everyone is wearing.

[Tim] Yeah.



As you may have deduced,
for your next assignment,

you will be working in collaboration
with iconic brand, Champion,

to create a two-look
activewear collection.

[applauding]

Activewear is not only for the gym.

It has become a streetwear staple.

And, as a reminder,
'accessible' never means

boring or watered-down.

Since 1919,
Champion has created activewear

that allows people to express themselves.

We're all about
the power of the individual

and creating a canvas
for people to be themselves

and play by their own rules.

I'm a Champion fan.
I have so many pieces of Champion.

So, this is a really exciting opportunity.

[Ciara] This is a huge opportunity.

Champion is a global brand.

To have the eyes of the world
on Ciara Cheyenne,

it would be life-changing.

As always, one look should be

a high-fashion interpretation
of activewear,

and one look should be
an accessible version.

We have provided you
with our pioneered reverse-weave fabric

as well as our trims and logos

for you to use in your designs.

The winner of this assignment
will not only have their look

immediately available
in the Making the Cut Store...

well, Ned, I'll let you do the honors.

They will also create a collab capsule
collection with Champion

so bad.

You know, as a streetwear designer,

collaborating with Champion
could change my life.

Champion has created collabs
with so many amazing designers and brands.

Rick Owens, Off White, and Coach,
to name just a few.

One of you is going to be next.

Now for a little business.

You will have two days
for this assignment.

There will be seamstresses working
with you. Their work will be at night.

You will be creating tech packs
for the seamstresses

that will communicate
what you want them to do.

We also have a textile printer,
or fabric printer,

so you can create
your own custom textiles.

Los Angeles inspiration.

How good is this?

[Yannik] Look, I found exact color
I want to use. Kind of this mint.

[Jeanette] This is amazing!

Some of the girls, they're very stylish,

even though, you know, they're here
and they're working out,

and that's what I like.

You want to look comfortable,

but, at the same time,
you want to be stylish

and be ready for Instagram, because you
know you need that picture. [laughing]

[Markantoine] I know that Champion is
a leisure and athletic brand,

but, for me, Champion is my childhood.

So, the 90s and everything...
so I decided to go full-on 90s.

I got inspired by this famous sweater
that Kurt Cobain has

with red and back stripes.

So, for my runway look, I decided
to pay a little homage to him.

For my accessible look,

I'm gonna do a deconstructed hoodie.

I'll do activewear grunge,

and I think it's gonna be
fantastic on the runway.

[Curtis] Cute. Go sports!

[Gabriella] This is all for...

[Rafael] Do you watch sports like this?

Not so much. Do you?

I'm not too.

Isn't soccer huge in your country?

[Gabriella] What I'm gravitating towards

is doing some sort of après-ski look.

I don't think that
Champion does skiwear per se,

so I think that this is, like,

a fun, new element to the brand
that could be super interesting.

[Rafael] When I was younger, I am dancer.

And in Brazil we have a tradition to dance
in the middle of the football.

After the show,
we always used comfortable sweatshirts.

I always, uh, was Champion.

I need to do something
comfortable but cool.

- Hey.

What's up? Here we go!

[Georgia] I really want to utilize
Champion fabrics in my designs.

Going in there was awesome.

I think I'm gonna go black and white.

It's good when you make a decision.

You're like, "Yes! I'm going with it."

Just the adrenaline of going around,
buzzing around, getting your fabrics.

It was wild.

Sorry. No, go for it, darling.
[giggling]

I'm really interested in the, like,
cross patterns of everything.

It's like very plaid...
Just all the grids and stripes.

I'm trying to think how to, like,

weave these logos and these, like,
elastic bands we've been given together

and maybe try to create my own pattern.

The quietness of no one, like,
actually playing a sport

and just sitting in the stands...
It's definitely inspiring.

Nothing is really set in stone right now.

I kinda just like to jot down all my ideas

and see what really speaks to me.

After yesterday's elimination,

I don't want to be up there again
in the bottom.

Both were not really cohesive.

They came from two different worlds.

You clearly had some fit issues
with the side of the pants.

Right.

[Ciara] I really just need to
focus on working hard

and pushing out the best designs
that I'm capable of doing.

[indistinct chatter]

[Georgia] Hello.

- [Curtis] Taking all the goodies?
- [Georgia] Yeah.

[Curtis] I want everything.
I'm making a lot.

[Georgia] You're going to town.

[Curtis] Well, I'm doing, like, um, plaid.

[Georgia] Oh, wow. Do your thing, honey.
This is a competition.

Are you cutting a pattern already?

Yeah.

[Markantoine] Oh, my God,
you're already cutting.

Yeah, I'm cutting.

Shit. I'm still shopping.

[Curtis] I'm going for, like,
construction worker activewear.

Homage to my father and my brother
and my grandfather.

Aww.

[Curtis] When I saw the Champion logo,
the first thing I thought of was my dad.

He's a carpenter, and he would wear
Champion sweaters to work,

so I feel like this is
the perfect opportunity

to dedicate something to him.

My concept is
I'm weaving my own plaid,

using the logos to create
a new, classic pattern for Champion.

And then I'm gonna photograph it and print
that on to some fabric and use that.

But it's gonna take a while.

My name is Curtis Cassell.
I'm a 32-year-old designer

living in Brooklyn, New York,
and my label is called Queera.

I started Queera a few years ago.

I worked with a huge gay staff

at a restaurant space
that did a lot of weddings.

We would always talk about
what other weddings would look like,

and I could not believe
the options were literally binary...

A black suit, a white dress.

And so it just became my mission

to mix and match grayscale of genders
that fit between that.

My first famous celebrity client
was Billy Porter,

which was huge because he's
the queer fashion icon right now.

It was just really surreal.

One of the articles called me a gender-
neutral designer, and I was mortified.

I was like, "I'm gender empowering!"
I'm extreme masc, extreme fem.

There's nothing neutral about me,
you know?

My brand isn't about defining your gender

as much as it is about
your own gender identity.

We're creating themwear,
a whole new genre of clothing.

I want that queer kid in Nebraska
to go to prom in one of my dresses.

Like, that's what's so important to me.

Right now I feel the pressure,
not only because I won the last one,

it's totally because activewear,
I've never done before.

This kind of fabric,

I've never worked on before.

But the fleece side,

it looks just so nice!

[Georgia] Yeah, love.

I actually have a lot of ideas
going on right now,

and this is my normal design process.

So, I'm starting off with
the runway high fashion look.

The top is going to be
a hot pink turtleneck,

and I believe
I'm going to do a skirt with that.

I'm not 100%, but it's in my mind, so I
just have to execute it and stay focused.

I'm dying out here...
Not dying, but I'm dying.

I'm adding color to the white fabrics,

and I'm taking away colors
from the already colored fabrics.

I'm a fan of white,

so I hope it's not going too green.

Experimenting.

I'm not used to working in shoes.

- Oh, do you work barefoot?
- I'm usually barefoot.

- Really?
- The only reason I'm wearing shoes now

is 'cause I get some smelly feet.

- Nice.
- It's for you guys, not for me.

When I want to throw the competition,

I'll take off my shoes
just to distract everyone.

I was thinking about, like,
shorts in leopard.

- Because for my...
- Depends on how much you wanna win it.

Think about it. I need to hurry.
I still didn't cut shit.

I just don't know, like,
in the first assignment on the runway,

they went for
something princessy for the winner.

Don't get me wrong, Sienna's work...
It's beautiful. But, for me, is it 2021?

Is it 2022? Is it the next of fashion?
I don't think so.

I want to show to the judges
that my clothing are the future,

the next of fashion.

[Georgia] This is so cool.

[Georgia] Wow, that's amazing.

My husband always makes fun of me,
because even if we're gonna go

hiking, kayaking, or camping...

I need to look cute.

So, I'm making this
fashionable activewear coat.

I'm doing it for me.
I'm doing it for all my friends

that I know they need it too.

So, Champion, you're welcome.

- [Jeanette] It looks good. I love it.
- [Rafael] Wow.

[Georgia] It's amazing!

I want to make a bodysuit
out of this and a jacket.

That's what I want to do. I just don't
know if they're gonna love it or hate it.

[Georgia] Looks like a labor of love

[Rafael] Because sports makes
our hearts...

that would be amazing.

the last second to do this.

[Ciara] Because of all of my
different ideas,

I didn't realize how many pattern pieces
I need to go into this tech pack.

Where did I put the pattern?

I'm gonna cry.

- [Georgia] Yeah.

I think I've bit off
a little bit more than I can chew.

It's an amazing day. Gorgeous.

So, I'm just going to have fun.

Oh my God, this is amazing.
I mean, how cool is this?

[Ciara] In the morning I like to
start my day with prayer,

because I have a lot of
moments that I doubt myself.

But when that does happen,
I have to remind myself,

"Okay, Ciara, you've come this far.
You have to keep going."

- [Gabriella] I'm scared.

[Yannik] I'm scared too.

Oh, my gosh! How did I forget

Okay. It's okay. You know, I have
time today. It's gonna get done.

Everything's gonna be great.

For the runway look, I'm crafting
a physical 3D textile of the plaid,

and I think it's gonna be
some sort of vest-dress-jacket.

I don't know. Now I need
to figure out how I'm sewing this.

How's your accessible look going?

[Rafael] Ah, good. Just some finishing.

- Oh yeah? Good!
- Yeah.

- And now I need to create runway look.
- Right.

For runway I have fabrics,
but maybe I will work with nets.

We have nets in the football. The volley...
We have a net in the tennis.

Sexy but activewear,
because I don't... can't forget this.

- [Yannik] And you? You happy?
- Yeah.

- This... this is so nice.
- This is great, I know. I like it.

For this collaboration
with Champion for "activewear,"

I don't see a lot of activewear
in the room. So, right now, I'm good.

Nah.

The coat took a long time.
That's all what I did yesterday.

Now I'm working on my runway look.

Any leftover fabrics
that you guys don't want...

- if you can give it to me...
- [Georgia] Okay.

To make bubbles.

What is this?

- [Jeanette] It's gonna be the top.
- It's a top?

Yeah. [chuckles]

When we went to the Canyon,
I saw this dry flower,

and the flower just had a bunch
of like little bubbles, bubbles, bubbles.

So, I'm making an art piece with texture.

It looks like the flower.
Even though this is a collaboration

with Champion,
I don't want to lose myself.

I love making art pieces.
I just speak from my heart.

I think I'm a very sensitive person,
but at the same time I'm very strong.

So, whatever I'm giving you
is because I feel that in my heart.

- How is everybody?
- [all] Hi!

You may never see me
dress this casually again.

- [laughing]
- I decided to Champion it up.

- [all chuckle]
- Can't wait to see what you're doing.

- How is Curtis?
- I'm out of my comfort zone for sure,

but I printed this fabric.

This is staggering.

I took hours to weave this yesterday
with all of these logos,

and then we printed it
onto a mesh for the jacket.

And then I did
a head to toe bodysuit as well.

[Tim] Wow! I'm crazy about it.
I'll just be blunt.

Okay, cool, cool.

- So, tell me about the runway look.
- I want to do the same sort of plaid

- but have it physically 3D.
- Oh, my God!

And it will have the same finishings
to look like a track jacket.

I'm just really worried about time.

I'm just wondering if
you could do the arms in something else.

I might. My other idea was
to do this as a vest.

- You know?
- A vest could work.

- Gabby, hi.

Growing up, I always got my brother's,
like, ugly hand-me-downs,

so this is kind of like my dream idea of,
like, what I would wear spring skiing

and kind of like the whole
Après-ski lifestyle.

- Got it.
- And then these pants are for

the men's look. Supposed to kind of
simulate, like, a snowboard pant.

What's high-end runway about this?

It looks very accessible to me.

Okay.

- It's a matter of turning up the volume.
- Bringing it up a level, yeah.

What do you think about a long scarf?

Like one that would drag behind?

- Like, I could train...
- You just need some drama.

- Okay. I need to figure that out.
- What goes with this top?

Because other than the pallets
and the fact that it's Champion fabric,

what's the tie in between these two looks?

Okay, so I was thinking about
making these pants...

- The pants you're wearing?
- Yes. In this color.

You could connect it doing the pant
and this darker color.

- Darker? Okay.
- I would.

I'm going to do
a very deconstructed underwear.

Ah.

Everything is going to be
in white, greenish, mintish...

How are you using them?

I'm not sure. It's still super wet,
and I'm not sure if I can use it.

- Keep your eye on the clock.
- Yeah.

Can't wait to see this.

Me too. I hope they understand it.

Well, this is a different look
than the last assignment.

I'm having so much fun with playing
those logos and trims...

- So, you're enjoying it, though?
- Yeah, I'm enjoying it.

- Playing around with it is so much fun.
- Okay.

[Tim] What I love about the accessible
look is it's still very runway.

- You didn't dumb it down.
- No.

- I can't dumb things down.
- Well, you did here.

[laughing] Okay.

For me, the dress is so very basic.
You need more drama.

Okay.

- Wow, this is the accessible look?
- Yeah, I've put this heart...

- Good heavens!
- Is like a fighter girl from the boxer.

Yeah, and I see, literally, a champion.

- Yeah, a champion.
- Yeah.

Here's your challenge,
and it's a big one...

Mm-hmm?

Your runway look has to be more of a wow

and more interesting
than the accessible look.

- Yeah.
- And this is a tough act to follow.

- Yeah.
- Sierra, tell me what you're doing.

This is a turtleneck long sleeve dress
to wear with, like, sneakers,

and I feel like it's very active.

- Good God, this is the accessible look?
- Yes.

- Sorry for that reaction.
- [both laughing]

It's a beautiful color,
but this fabric is very unforgiving

- if the fit isn't right.
- Right.

For me, the more accessible look is,
by far, the more interesting

- and the more, in a way, elevated.
- Mm-hmm.

And this looks playful,
but it doesn't look high end.

Mm-hmm.

You need to figure out
how to bring it up, how to raise it.

Mm-hmm.

The pressure is hitting me.
I'm getting anxiety, to be honest.

For me, the first time I heard about
Champion was in the 90s when I was a kid,

and I said, "Oh, maybe there's
something a little grunge."

Maybe skate also
because it's more of my aesthetic.

So, for my runway look,
I chose to go with this

that I'm going to play with it under it.

Maybe I wanna do a pair
of shorts to put over this one

and make it, like, more drama,
like, over the top grunge.

- I just don't know for the delivered.
- I don't know either. It's a lot of look.

- I want to win.
- Win!

I want to win so bad.
I think I'm going to show...

Show them who I am
and what can I bring to Champion.

Well, I can't wait
to see this on the runway.

is right up my alley.

It's something that I...
I've been waiting for forever.

When I was young growing up in Montreal,

I started drawing dresses for my friends.

It was there, I think,
I wanted to do fashion.

The workshop is literally
the house of the dogs,

because all we have is dogs here.

I have my brand Markantoine since 2015.

It's denimwear,
skatewear, very conceptual.

I have to tell a story every time.

Like sustainable underwear.

I'm also a teacher.

Welcome to fashion school everybody.

In 2019 I had a very big trauma from,
like, being beat up.

It was gay bashing.

I got 4 fractures in the face,
two concussions.

It was super tough.

Messed up with my company too because I
cannot do anything for a couple of months.

I didn't know if I'm going to
make it as a designer, but now I'm here,

and I'm ready to take over the world.

Alright, I have to tell you I am wowed.

I'm so excited for the show.

because nothing is finished.

Tim told me it possibly could have
a fit issue because of the fabric.

it's gonna take to make these alterations.

to change the whole design.

The fitting was not good,
so I scrapped it.

Basically, I just cut the dress in half
and saved the bottom half.

I have to recut a whole new top.
I'm feeling lots of pressure.

I feel my life like a dream,
because I am from Brazil.

I never imagined I'd be in LA
in the Making the Cut.

I feel confident,
but in the same time I feel afraid,

because, oh my God,
everybody is so talented.

so I'm gonna try and get that done.

[Markantoine] Styling the makeup
and the hair tell a story,

and it's so important
to have a storyline in fashion.

- I want like dark and red under the eyes.

[Markantoine] Something very punk-ish,
like grungy.

Do you wanna see Urban Decay
gloss or a matte lip, or...?

Yeah, let's do like a pink gloss.

And then everything is
going nice and clean and slick.

[Curtis] Do you guys know
how much time we have?

[Yannik] One hour, 10 minutes.

Okay, I don't have time for
it to be perfectly long though.

[stylist] I told her to punch it more.
Like super grunge dirt.

Yeah.

[stylist] Perversion mascara,
which I freaking love.

This mascara lengthens and volumizes.

So, I was picturing, like, center part,
and then there's like braids that sorta...

- Love it.
- You know what I mean?

Like very boxer, you know?

Okay. You want it like the wet look?

That'll help to hold it a little more.

Yeah. If you suggest so. Yeah, yeah.

- The One United leave-in for sure.
- [Curtis] Uh-huh.

To give it that wet look that will
help us to hold the braids.

- [Curtis] Cool.

[Ciara] Right now, I'm very concerned
with my accessible look.

[sighs] I do not want it to be gathered.

There were some
fit issues with the first assignment.

I hope that I don't get called out
on that again.

And then it's more of a "wow" factor.
Okay, so maybe I'm going to do that.

Nothing a Sharpie won't fix. [chuckles]

I just realized I'm like a little
too ambitious.

I'm very anxious to see how our designers
put their own spin on activewear.

[Nicole] Yeah, absolutely.

So what's great is
Champion is known for heritage mesh.

It looks like he did a lot of research.

- [Ned] The earrings are also great.
- [Nicole] They're beyond.

[Heidi] I mean, for me, it starts
at the earrings, you know?

Yeah.

[Jeremy] And I think this is a great
transition to a wearable version.

I'm just so happy to see
an accessible look that has drama.

Yeah, buyers want to consume
something excited.

- [Tim] Exactly.
- [Heidi] I love it.

[Jeremy] And any cool girl
would want to wear that.

that I'm like... It's like almost there.

as the first look, right?

it's a little washed out.

I appreciate the color palette,

a skiing outfit.

[Jeremy] Which is interesting,

but it doesn't seem like

To me, this looks like
an avant garde version

if she was doing

But it's very her. She is all about

a few that really just nailed it.

his accessible work.

I wrote down, "It's the new warm up
or the new track suit." I loved it.

[Heidi] A lot going on, but it all
worked together beautifully.

Absolutely nailed it, to me.

I feel like Curtis
like nailed the bodywear aspect

of connection to activewear.

For me, the silhouettes are too boring.

The runway look is
not very exciting anyway.

This could have been the accessible look.

[Nicole] This could have been
the accessible look.

And it would have been an exciting look.

It's like that's why I go back to
where Raphael really gave you some...

- And wow moment.

And then the second one is
kind of dull and it's a little sad.

The color she chose for the second one...

She seems to do that each time
for accessible look...

Right? I mean, but to me who was
super snoozy is Jeanette.

She tried to be very avant garde.
But because it was that

- gray and black, it was kind of sad.

[Heidi] The second look, that's like,
'wait, what is active about that?'

It looks like a secretary in an
elevator that I wouldn't pay attention to.

- But she is talented.
- I know, and that's what's heartbreaking.

she made fabric out of flower.

I mean the girl is talented,
but she just came up flat this time.

- Her flower did not rise tonight.

we're looking for a fashion designer
and an entrepreneur.

about the two looks
that you sent down the runway.

My brand is conceptual skatewear.
I decided for this assignment

to pay an homage to Kurt Cobain.

I saw him with this famous sweater that he
was wearing. Black and red stripe on it.

- Oh, yeah, of course.
- I know that sweater.

So I decided to start with
this sweater and make it like

- my brand and Champion at the same time.
- The first piece was my favorite.

You captured Champion,
and I thought it was interesting.

The second piece was like almost there,

but overall I thought
you did an amazing job.

I think the first look
was perfectly styled.

It looked cool
To me, that was your accessible look.

I needed something more
for the runway look.

I also love the first look,
the use of the logo taping.

You definitely
did your homework for Champion.

I loved it too. I love the plaid
with a little stripe with a big stripe.

I thought you did a great job.

Are you still nervous?

- I stopped shaking.

the first look,

and for the second look I want to create
something really special.

To find your heart because
sports really makes our hearts beat.

I loved it. I love how edgy
your first look was, how sexy she was.

I would wear that. The earrings...

- Just you have a really great imagination.
- The mesh was fun,

sexy, dramatic. It was
everything we want for a runway look,

and it still captured
the DNA of the brand.

And I think you did a great
throughline to your accessible look.

I loved your accessible look. I think
your customers are going to like it.

I think the Champion customers will
like it. You really checked all the boxes.

So tell us about
the looks that you showed us.

Well, it was when we came in the other day
and I saw the Champion on your sweater.

It reminded me of like
watching my dad get ready for work.

He's a carpenter.
So, even though I'm incredibly athletic,

my initial response
wasn't, like, sportswear.

It was like carpentry,
like Ohio boys four-wheeling.

So, my first thought was
to create like a flannel or like a plaid.

- Yeah, well, it worked.
- You killed.

- So, good job.
- [Curtis] Thank you.

I got nervous coming up here
after the winner.

This can't be good.

[Heidi] Well, Curtis,

Ned wants to tell you something
very exciting.

So, loved your jumpsuit.

I loved the print,

- how you connected it to activewear.
- Thank you.

We would like to partner
with you on producing that look.

[Curtis] This collaboration with Champion
is a really cool opportunity

on a challenge that was, you know,
love letter to my dad.

Like that was... that was amazing.

So, I do a lot of art pieces.

And for this assignment, I said to myself,

"What do you think Champion needs?"

Well, I would love to have a sport coat.

So, the runway look,
I saw this one single flower.

It was dry, but she survived the wind.
This flower really inspire.

Also me using your materials
and be able to fight with the materials

and see what I can do.

Well, I love hearing you talk about it.
To be honest with you, I did not like it.

I respect your artistic creative flair,

but I just didn't respond
personally to your runway piece.

[Ned] What I was missing is a little more
connection to Champion's heritage.

Yeah, maybe this time I screw...
I screwed up, but...

I don't think it was a screw up.

Listen, I think that you
really leaned into your brand.

You know, I do think that leaning
into the Champion brand a little bit more

- would have helped this assignment.
- Okay.

But I don't think you lost yourself.

- I mean, I could definitely see you.

Those were my two
least favorite looks on the runway today.

The first girl walks out in a... I mean,
a beautiful constructed art piece, yes.

But I couldn't find Champion anywhere
in that. Then the second look comes out.

It was a boring dress with
a boring coat over it, to be frank.

Obviously, I'm sorry to disappoint you.

Obviously I have the passion
and I have the hard work to be here.

But if you guys give me the opportunity
to show you what I can do,

- you guys are not going to regret it.
- Nicole, have you changed your mind?

- Jeremy, have you changed your mind?

Oh yes, I have.

[Heidi] Wow.

[Heidi] So the majority wins.

So for my first runway
high fashion look, I wanted to do

the power mesh turtleneck
with the open back.

For the 2nd accessible look...

Well, to be completely honest with you,

I started off with a dress,
and then after fitting it with my model,

the fit wasn't that great.
And it literally was down to the wire,

the last second,
sewing before the runway show.

Thank you for being very honest
and explaining everything

'cause there was definitely fit issues.

When I think about the runway look,
I don't get any fantasy from it.

To me, it is very accessible.
And for sure for the accessible look,

they're almost identical, right?

- Right.
- It was... It was disappointing.

For the second look,
I wasn't necessarily loving the colors.

You know, they're not popping
on the runway. It's just not hitting

in the way that I would want it to

in order to get to the end
of this competition.

They did look very similar.
That's where you fell a little short.

I just wish there was
a little bit more imagination,

especially in the very first look

where you guys have
the freedom to really go.

I understand.
