MacGyver (1985–1992): Season 3, Episode 13 - Thin Ice - full transcript

MacGyver returns to Minnesota to help his old hockey coach take his high school team to the state championships. The toughest part will be dealing with the violent temper of their star player.

The raider's zone.

They have the man advantage,
they're applying the pressure.

It's Henderson behind the net,
looking for somebody to pass to.

Fires it back to the point.

Wilson with the shot.

Garrett makes the save!

The puck is knocked
into the corner.

Henderson there, digging for it.

Gets it back to the point again,

And again it's weasel
Wilson winding up with a shot!

He shoots, he scores!

Weasel Wilson
has given the hawks

A six to five lead.

The power play paid off

For the waverly hawks.

They now have a one-goal lead.

It's Morrison,
winning the draw.

Morrison takes the
puck to the blue line.

Randor, trailing on the play.

Like most kids growing
up in Minnesota,

I could skate
before I could walk.

So, when my old coach

sent a call for help,

I jumped at the chance

to come home and coach his team

through the state
championship playoffs.

Let's go, raiders! Come on!

The raiders had fought

through a hard season
to find themselves

in this best of three final

against the waverly hawks.

All I had to do was
keep 'em on track.

The hockey was the easy part.

The hard part was
the team's key player,

Number 17, Derek Kirby.

He was the team's biggest asset,

and my biggest problem.

And, as usual,

Right there at home
in the penalty box.

Kirby, still in the penalty box,

now only has a few
seconds remaining...

Kirby dashing onto the ice,

and skating over to his wing,

Indicating he wants to pass.

Kirby has the puck, and
then passes off himself.

Kirby, skating to the blue line.

Takes the pass.

Kirby heading for the end goal.

Turn around, wrap around!

Wrap it!

And he shoots, he scores!

Yeah!

Yeah, I won!

Raiders goal scored

By number 17, Derek Kirby.

Back only four weeks
after the incident in Finland

That led to his expulsion
from team u.S.A.

He's back!

That's the way to
show 'em, Derek!

You talk about winners...

All right, we can do this.

We can do it!

Leaving the ice
for just a moment,

Let's meet a familiar
face I spotted in the crowd.

One of the top NHL player
agents, Bret Thompson.

Bret, is there anybody
down there on ice level

who can play in the NHL,
has the potential to play?

Well, that kid Kirby seems
to know where to put the puck.

He might be just
the kind of material

the mustangs are looking for.

He's a good one,
that's for sure.

Bret Thompson,
thank you for joining us.

I know you're
gonna be a busy man

over the next couple of days.

Kirby and Henderson on the...

Hey, what do you say?

Hey, watch his back,
watch your back!

Action along the boards...

Get off of him!

To apply the pressure...

Keep your head

in the game, Kirby!

Could win it for the team

Here in the Minnesota
state championship series.

It's a best-of-three.

The play goes behind the net.

The raiders lose possession.

The hawks have it!

Henderson, with the puck,

passing to Wilson

in the slot.

Kirby digs into
Wilson and gets...

- No!

17-white, tripping.

and now Henderson retaliates

with a shove to the back

Of Kirby... this is serious.

Sit down, all of you!

Stay put.

On the bench, on the bench!

On the bench, as a fight

breaks out on the ice.

Pushing and shoving...

Break it up!

Go ahead! That kid's a pistol.

That, he is.

Okay, Kirby, that's it.

You're out of here!

Me?!

What about him, huh?

You have a lot of
trouble finishing a game,

don't you, Mr. Olympic?

Key player Derek Kirby

has been ejected
from this contest

in an instant replay

of the exact infraction

That got him expelled
from team u.S.A.

what a blow to the
raiders this will be,

With the score tied and
less then 30 seconds to play.

Replacement coach
MacGyver doesn't appear happy.

Raider penalty, number 17,

Kirby, on game misconduct.

The hawks
draw the foul play once again

with the score tied at 6 all.

Kirby makes his way
to the dressing room.

As the play continues now,

Henderson gets
it back to the point,

Across to Wilson,
back to Henderson.

Henderson winds
up with the shot.

Henderson shoots, he scores!

Go hawks, go! Go hawks, go!

All right!

Seven-six, hawks.

Hawks are number one, Kirby.

Forget it, kid.

These jokers don't know
what the game's all about.

Some refs will throw
you out of the game,

just for breaking a fingernail.

Yeah, and some will do it

when you try to get away
with a dangerous stunt

like Derek did.

Mr. Thompson, this is MacGyver.

He's coaching the raiders

for turk donner

while turk's laid up.

Bret here is a, uh,

he's a player's rep,

In case you didn't know that.

He's trying to set up my boy

for the mustangs.

From the way Derek

Played tonight...

I'd say he's just
the kind of material

they're looking for.

Yeah, well mustang material

Is not what I'm looking for.

You didn't get away
with banging heads

for team u.S.A.,

you're not gonna
get away with it

Playing for the raiders.

Now, you try something
like that again,

I'll can you myself.

State finals or not.

Practice, 2:00 sharp.

Be there.

Who in the hell
does he think he is,

Coming in here mouthing
off to you like that...

Telling you what to do?

Come on, pop.

MacGyver's just
thinking of the team.

Oh, MacGyver, MacGyver...

Don't worry about it.

If I can get the mustang coaches

to fly down for the next game,

and you play the
way you did tonight,

well... you can

Kiss this little hick
town goodbye forever.

All right, Bret.

- We lost.
- I know.

Where did you get this?

I have my connections.

The doctor said no excitement.

Doctor's been saying
that for six weeks.

I just wish she'd let the boys

Come in and see me.

Will you take it easy?

Your health comes first.

No, the championship
comes first.

That's why you're
here, MacGyver,

and I appreciate it.

Hey, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

We're down to a two-game season.

We got to win both.

Right, and Derek's
our only chance.

You're the coach now,

you got to do
something with him.

How about canning
him for starters?

You know, for
every goal he scored,

He spent four to six
minutes in the penalty box.

What'd you ever see in this kid

To make you think he
was olympic material?

I saw the next gretzky,

maybe better.

He's got that fire inside him,

That certain something that
can make him a champion.

That same something

you took to the
Olympics in 1960?

Oh, I see a little bit of me

in the kid,

but I also see a whole
lot of you, MacGyver.

He has what you had

when I coached
you in high school.

All he needs is someone

to clear a path for him,

to show him the way, and
you can do that, MacGyver,

I know you can.

This means more to you

Than just winning a
championship, doesn't it?

Oh, folks around here

could use something to
stand up and be proud of.

And you can give it
to them, MacGyver,

but it starts with Derek Kirby.

You got to turn him around.

Derek's not here.

I came to talk to you.

Yeah, so talk.

Talk all you want, I don't care.

I want you to keep Thompson

and the mustangs
away from Derek.

You got to be kidding.

What for?

So your son can play

the right brand of hockey.

I don't want to see the
team lose the championship

just so Derek can showboat
his way into a contract

With those goons.

You got it figured out
pretty good, don't you?

I want to show you
something, MacGyver,

About the right brand of hockey.

This trophy here.

He won that when he was 14.

Most valuable player.

97 goals, 112 assists.

And guess what?

He won it without
you holding his hand,

so what do you think
about that, hotshot?

I think an olympic medal

Might have looked good in here.

Yeah, I thought about that.

I did, I thought about that...

until they put an olympic torch

in my son's hands,

and then burnt him with it.

Mr. Kirby, don't you think

Derek had just a
little to do with that?

Why?

'Cause my boy plays
hard-nose hockey?

'Cause my kid plays to win?

No, because he ignores

Basic rules of hockey.

And he doesn't give a thought

about the team or teamwork.

Derek has nothing
resembling olympic spirit.

Don't you tell me about
olympic spirit, MacGyver.

I've seen my boy
cry twice in his life.

Once, when his mama died,

and the other time

Was when he got off
that plane from Finland.

I ain't ever gonna see
him hurt that way again.

I'm gonna do
everything in my power,

everything I can,

to see he gets something
decent in this life.

And it's hockey, man,

I mean it's professional hockey.

That's the only way
he's going to get it.

Get what?

A big paycheck for being
a hit-man on skates?

That's all the mustangs
are looking for.

At least it's a chance

For something
better than this, right?

Let me tell you
something, MacGyver.

You get in the way of that,

and so help me, i'm...

Don't say it, Mr. Kirby.

Please... don't say it.

Thanks for your time.

Aim low, hard,
and on net, and...

Nice shot!

Sure you don't need a soap
box to shoot from, Kirby?

You got something to say,

then say it, Chester.

Your hot-dogging
for the mustangs

cost us the game.

Hey! Can it, you guys!

Why don't you shut your face?

Make me do it!

You want to try me now?

Yeah.

Come on, let's do it!

Show me!

Hey, hey, hey, guys.

Hey!

Come on, cool it, would you?

Knock it off.

Oh, man.

Come on!

Back off.

Knock it off, both of you!

Now, we win as a team,
and we lose as a team.

That's the way it
works, you got it?!

All right, set up
for the fish hook.

We'll run it as a team.

All right, set it up!

Run the
boards, Morrison...

That's it!

Now, move it!

Now, bring it out, malachuk.

Set it!

Pass it, Kirby, pass it!

Watch the interference.

Get it to him!

All right.

That's working together.

Okay... again.

Esposito's
got it at center ice.

Into the corner to Sanderson,

to orr, coming down the slot,

he shoots... Off the pipe.

It's out front.

Lanny MacDonald shoots, scores!

- Oh!

Unbelievable, off the face mask.

Great shot.

You got any more quarters?

No, you've totally
cleaned me out.

Come on.

You really love
hockey, don't you?

Yeah.

I love it a lot.

So what got you turned on to it?

Well, growing up in Minnesota,

it's kind of hard not to,

but right there,

That's what did it for me.

It's turk donner's gold medal.

Squaw valley, 1960.

Turk and his team
beat the Czechs.

I was eight years old,

And I can still remember
him bringing home that medal.

I couldn't wait to
get into high school

to play for him.

Yeah.

Coach donner's the reason
I made it onto team u.S.A.

No, your ability

To play the game of hockey
is what got you on the team.

The question is,

how did you get yourself
kicked off the team?

Ooh, no secret there.

The whole country saw it.

That steamroller on team
Finland took me into the boards,

and I gave it back to him.

End of story.

That's not what
I'm talking about.

I want to know what
went on in your head.

Derek, you have got the talent.

You've got the speed,
you've got the instinct.

You know that.

You don't have to
bang heads to win.

You know what it's like
to be chosen from 400

of the best players
in the country?

I wish I did.

They only picked 32 of us.

God, my dad was proud.

I got a letter
from the governor,

Congratulating me as an
"ambassador of sportsmanship."

Dad borrowed money from the bank

To throw me this
big send-off party.

Filled this place
to the rafters.

And then I blew my
chance at the Olympics

by playing the
only hockey I know.

I got to go for that NHL
contract, MacGyver.

I can't let my dad down again.

That's great!

Go for the NHL

But Derek, make a team
pick you for the right reasons.

Make 'em pick
you for your abilities

as a hockey
player, not a fighter.

It's all I can do, MacGyver.

Hockey's in my blood.

I understand that.

Just take the blood
out of your hockey.

Doesn't it say something to you

when the only team

to show any
interest in you at all

is a team with a
fairly bad reputation?

You can do better
than that, Derek.

Derek.

Let's go, buddy.

Got work to do.

I got to go.

Why don't you save your coaching

for the ice, MacGyver?

Welcome to
kerrisdale arena for game two

Of the Minnesota state
college championship.

Face off is just minutes
away here on klma.

620 am radio, your
voice of hockey.

In the exciting,
high-scoring game,

one of the series
the hawks scored

in the final seconds to beat

the raiders seven to six.

That was just after raiders'
star Derek Kirby was ejected

from the game for an
intent to injure penalty.

Kirby's a key factor
in keeping the hawks

From walking off
with the championship.

The former team u.S.A.
Player has cranked out a record

180 minutes of
penalties this season,

and yet, still leads
in goals with 55.

You know, if Kirby had
stuck around in game one,

It might have been
a different story.

- The puck is dropped

To get game two

in this best of three
series underway.

Raiders take possession
and pass it through center ice

and down the right side.

The all important second game,

and Kirby has come to
play in this one, you can tell.

He really wants the
puck at every opportunity.

Kirby takes it past
to the blue line.

Now hits from the end court.

This could be the fastest
wraparound move from Kirby.

And then he scores!

his lightning speed in game two

to give the raiders an
early one nothing lead!

As I said, Kirby
has come to play,

and he used that move
where he goes around the net,

and then tucks it in the short

Side.

Oh, what a beauty that
was from Derek Kirby

to give the raiders
a one nothing lead

In this all-important
second game of the series.

That's the lift, the
psychological lift,

That the raiders
were looking for.

The raiders' replacement
coach, MacGyver, seems

to have really worked
wonders with his star center,

or is Kirby trying to
earn his ticket to the NHL

by impressing those
two mustang coaches...

That are sitting with
his dad in the stands?

And now, the raiders
come out of their own zone.

They've got a two
on two situation

as they hit the blue line

and shoot the puck in.

Kirby has the puck.

He drives toward the end
boards, stops, turns around,

comes back to the point.

Now he's picking up speed,

Striving towards the net.

Kirby taking a vicious
whack from Wilson. Kirby...

Call it, ref!

14, hawks... cross check and

let's go.

Taking a dive on the play.

What's interesting
here is that Kirby...

Don't just lie there...
Get after him, son!

This is most unlike Kirby.

Maybe he's hurt, maybe
he's really shaken up.

No!

Kirby is back on his skates.

The clock is stopped
with two minutes

and eight seconds remaining
in the second period.

The score... still raiders,
three, hawks, one.

Two of those raiders goals
coming from Derek Kirby,

who surprisingly enough, has yet

To receive a single
penalty in this game.

Way to go, MacGyver!

14, hawks... two minutes.

Cross checking.

Hawk's
penalty... number 14,

Wilson, cross-checking,
two minutes.

Kirby is happy.

Raiders have...

And this is a key face-off
just inside the hawk's blue line.

- Kirby and the raiders are set...

If they lose the face-off,

the hawks get possession.

They play it behind
their own net.

Up the center right
right to the stick of Kirby.

Kirby at his own blue line.

He wheels, passes to himself.

What a great move
by Derek Kirby!

A bit of a showboating
move, but it certainly worked,

As Kirby passes to malachuk.

Maluchuk... but
something's happened.

He's got a man
over behind the net.

Malachuk plays him
around the boards.

The raiders still
have possession.

Back to Kirby at the point.

Kirby, wheeling and dealing
just inside the blue line.

- Set it up.
- Looking for somebody

To pass to.

The raiders have them
at advantage. They're on...

Let's go, boy!

They lead

by a three to one score.

Kirby still looking for
somebody to pass to...

Watch him now... he's
gonna make his move.

But he's not passing.

He's hanging onto the puck.

Kirby is looking
into the stands at

the players and at the scouts.

Kirby, what are you doing?

I can't believe it.

He's showboating for
the fans and the pros.

He fakes the shot,
moves in towards the net.

He's got an open Lane,
but again, he won't shoot,

and he won't pass. He's...

Stop the hotdogging!

Deep move by Kirby

to get by the defense man.

And he still won't
pass the puck.

He's got players
open all over the ice.

Henderson moves in.

Oh. He gets the puck away from

Kirby. It's a two

on one...

It's Baxter and Henderson.

Henderson took the
puck, plays it to Baxter.

Baxter shoots! He scores!

Oh, boy!

A bad move on the part of Kirby.

He held onto the
puck far too long, and it

Cost the raiders.

Henderson... checked it free.

Damn it, no!

He and Baxter
went in on a two...

Turk, I told you, no hockey.

No excitement.

Now wait a minute, doc.

Are you telling me

that I'm getting out
of here in a week,

and I can't even listen
to a game on the radio?

'cause if that's what
you're telling me,

you may as well pull
the plug right now.

'Cause the first
thing I'm gonna do

when I get out of here
is find a hockey game,

and I don't care if it's
peewees on a pond!

You are a real big
pain, you know that?

'Course I know that.

What's the score?

We're up by one.

Pull up a bed,
doc, and sit down.

How's Kirby doing?

Well, he'd be in the
dressing room about now,

and if I were MacGyver,
I'd be saying to him,

"Why didn't you
follow the play, Kirby?

Johnson was wide open!"

Why didn't you
follow the play, Kirby?

Johnson was wide open.

I lost it, all right?

No, it's not all right.

They scored because you
didn't follow through on the play.

The play we set up as a team.

Now you want to
play for the mustangs,

that's fine with
me, but you wait

until you're on their team!

You got it?

I got it.

I'm sorry.

Okay, two minutes, raiders.

All right, we've got
20 minutes left to do it.

Let's go!

Now, ladies and gentlemen

for the third
period, your raiders!

You can go, raiders, you can go.

You can go, raiders...

What do you call
that out there, boy?

Just let me play.

Well, you'd better
start playing,

And I mean I want to see
some hard and fast action.

I didn't haul those
mustang coaches down here

to watch you try out
for the ice capades.

Look,

we can't win with
me in the penalty box.

Who cares if you win?

You're making

a fool out of me

and your old man.

Now I want to see some
of the hard-nose hockey

That's gonna prove
you're mustang material.

You got 20 minutes
to go out there

and bash some heads.

Hey, let's go.

Get on the ice.

You're off limits, Thompson.

The third
period about to get underway

here at the kerrisdale arena.

The raiders

continue to lead the hawks

by a score of three to two,

but in the best of three
championship series,

They trail one
game to nothing...

The raiders with the draw.

They get it back to malachuk.

Malachuk, across to Johnson,
Johnson ahead to Kirby.

Kirby spots randar
on the right side...

Randar with a break!

He shoots!

It's wide on the
Mark. Kirby goes

up to the boards

to retrieve the puck

and is hit heavily by Henderson.

There's no love lost
between these two players.

But once again, Kirby
refuses to retaliate.

He backs away.

That's unusual
for the feisty Kirby.

Bust him one, son!

Most times, he'd sooner fight.

Let him have it!

He seems a little confused.

Unsure of himself.

Kirby moving in to the hot zone.

He's tripped Henderson.

Kirby, no!

if ever there was one.

Kirby against Henderson.

Henderson moves
in to shove Kirby.

Now the gloves are off, the
helmets are down on the ice,

these two are going at it...

- All right...
- There's no love lost

Between Kirby and Henderson.

On the bench. Stay on the bench!

Henderson
and Kirby going at it.

Henderson is making a couple

of sharp lefts at
Kirby, and now...

Come on, Derek...

Against Henderson.

He's had enough...

Enough.

Enough.

Kirby shocks Henderson.

Better call the paramedics.

He's still in a coma.

Have his parents been notified?

His mother's arriving
in the morning.

Will he be all right?

The blow to the head
caused a skull fracture,

and there's some
hemorrhaging around the brain.

Depending on how long it
takes him to come around,

well, he could be disabled.

Disabled?

Oh...

I'm gonna check in on turk,
let him know what's happening.

You all right?

Uh, yeah.

I'm sorry, Eddie.

Nobody was supposed to get hurt.

Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey! Stop!

What are you doing?

Take it easy out there.

Hey, son, you...

You can't let what
happened to Eddie get to you.

I mean, that, that
was an accident.

His head is mush!

They can't just
bang out the dents

And give him a new paint job.

He's as good as
dead, and it's my fault.

Come on now; Hey, come on.

Did you tell Eddie
to, uh, pick a fight?

Did you tell him that?

Did you tell Eddie

To take off his helmet?

No.

No, well, then, don't
eat yourself up over it.

Ah... I know
you're hurting, son.

I mean, I can see that.

But punishing
yourself isn't going to,

isn't going to change anything,

right?

He's tough...

Like me.

Hey, Walt, Derek.

Hey, Bret!

Well, break out the champagne.

You are in.

Congratulations, kid.

Welcome to the mustangs
and the big leagues.

The coaches went for him?

Are you kidding?
They ate him up!

Way to go, kid.

I knew you'd come through.

So, when does he start, Bret?

Your first game is
in Philly tomorrow.

The owners can't wait to see
you take a notch out of the fliers.

Look here... What do
you think, huh? Huh?

- Whoa!
- Tomorrow?

Well, you guys move
fast, I got to tell you. Whoo!

What about the raiders
and the state finals?

What, do you want
to go on the ice

and risk an injury?

Blow a six-figure deal
over a lousy state trophy?

Come on, it's only
one more game.

Look, kid, I had to
nail them to their seats

after the second period
to get them to stay.

If you hadn't come through
with the goods in the third,

you'd be history;
Now, don't push it.

Wait a minute.

Are you saying that if I hadn't
have put Eddie in the hospital,

the mustangs wouldn't
have anything to do with me?

You're starting to sound
like that MacGyver.

It's my question; Answer me.

What is this?

I bust my butt to get
you on an n.H.L. Team.

Now you want to
play 20 questions?

Either you're in or you're out.

Look, don't worry

about it, Bret; You got
yourself a deal, man.

The hell he does!

I don't want your blood money.

Get out of here.

Have it your way, kid.

Hey, come on, Bret.

No, no, no, I've wasted
enough time here already.

The name can
come off this Jersey

just as easy as it
went on, you know.

Come on, give us another chance.

Are you nuts?!

Do you realize
what you just did?!

Something I should have done
when I got back from Finland.

What the hell are you
talking about, Derek?!

I'm quitting.

Oh, Derek...!

The mustangs, the
raiders... The whole works.

Come on!

I can't do this anymore.

You can't just up and
throw it all away, son.

I mean, you wanted
this your whole life.

No! You wanted it!

Me? I wanted it?

I had you in a half Nelson
since you were eight years old?

You didn't want
any of this stuff?

You didn't want the
medals, the championships,

all these beautiful trophies?

You didn't want
any of this stuff,

- is that it?
- No!

What kind of trophy
do I get if Eddie dies?

I'm finished.

No more.

I'm finished, too!

You hear me?

Finished with all of it!

You're late.

I know. Sorry.

Listen, Kirby's in
the dressing room.

He says he's quitting.

Take over.

Okay, let's go.

So, when the going gets tough,

the tough quit,
is that it, Derek?

I've had it, MacGyver.

I don't know who to play
the game for anymore.

If I play the way you
and turk want me to,

my dad's all over me

and I lose a contract
with the mustangs.

If I play the way
they want me to,

I practically kill Eddie.

I'm finished.

It just isn't fun anymore.

So, what happens now?

I don't know.

Finish college.

Get a job someplace, I guess.

And wonder for
the rest of your life

whether you could
have made it or not?

What do you suppose Eddie's
wondering about these days?

Quitting is not going to
change what happened to Eddie.

And maybe if you got out
there and showed people

the way the game is
supposed to be played,

that kind of thing
wouldn't happen.

Look, MacGyver, you
don't have a clue how I feel.

I know how you're going to feel

about ten or 15
years down the line.

What is this, another pep talk?

Trust me, it's no pep talk.

When I got out of high school,

I could taste the Olympics,
and a pro career in hockey.

And then I managed
to get myself busted up.

How?

Playing hard, playing stupid.

The point is, my
injuries were bad enough

that I convinced myself
that it just wasn't worth it.

And I quit.

And now every time
I lace up my skates

and go out on that
ice, I got to wonder

Whether I could
have made it or not.

And you know something, Derek?

I'll never find out.

You don't get many
second chances, Derek.

Don't make the
same mistake I did.

Because if you quit, that's it.

You'll always wonder.

- Let's go, set it up.
- All right.

Go!

Right to me, George.

Coming to you, Derek.

That's it! Next three.

Move!

Come on, let's go!

Stay on him, stay on him.

Eddie, next three.

- Pass to the wing! To the wing!
- I got him, I got him!

Whew!

It's going around.

Right to me.

Look...

I've been pretty
mixed up lately.

I was trying to please
everybody, and...

I forgot what was
best for the team.

I let you guys down.

I'm sorry.

I won't blame you if
you don't want me back...

but we got

a pretty good shot at winning

that state championship
tomorrow night.

I just hope you'll
let me be a part of it.

Is this you talking, Derek,

or are you just trying to set up

another dog and pony
show for your dad?

He's, uh...

He's out of the picture.

For good.

All right!

Let's run it again.

Next three up.

Here we go!

All right.

Let's do it.

That old compressor again, huh?

Why don't you let me
give you a hand there.

I think I've had enough
help from you, MacGyver.

Now, there's your problem.

The spring.

Oh, that's terrific.

I'll order a new one,

It'll only take a
month to get here.

Oh, maybe not.

You know, when
something's broken,

the easiest thing to
do is just throw it away

or forget about it.

But if you just... step back,

take a look at what you got,

sometimes you find
a totally different way

Of making it work.

Try that.

Seems like you got a knack

For fixing things, MacGyver.

Well, there is one thing

I'd really like to be
able to fix, Mr. Kirby...

The split between
you and your son.

Yeah, well,

- he didn't come home last night.

That doesn't surprise me.

He's not quitting.

He's going to play tonight.

Tonight?

All right.

Well, let me tell you

About the last 12
years, Mr. MacGyver.

The long drives on icy roads

To games and practices.

Watching your eight-year-old

take a frozen puck to the face.

And holding his hand
while they sewed up his chin.

And the, the hockey
clinics every summer.

Every summer,
1500 bucks a throw.

You think I went
through that whole thing

just to see that kid

Rot in a stinking
little town here?

That boy has a gift.

God-given talent, MacGyver.

And it could earn
him a good living.

And he's throwing it away.

I mean, you're worried
about one game.

I'm worried about the
rest of my son's life.

The rest of your son's life...

Starts with tonight's game.

Yes, Mr. Kirby,

Derek has talent.

He's got a lot of talent.

But right now,
he needs a father.

There always seems
to be a way to fix things.

All right, listen up.

Uh...

I consider myself pretty lucky

to have worked out with you
guys for these last few weeks.

You've made me feel
like part of the team,

I appreciate that.

It's been an honor.

But right now,

I think it's important
that we remember

who got you here
in the first place.

Turk donner.

When I played for turk
back in high school...

He used to read this at
the top of every season.

It's the olympic oath.

I think he'd appreciate it

if I read it now.

"In the name of all competitors,

"I promise that
we will take part

"In these games, respecting...

"Respecting and abiding

"by the rules that govern them

"in the true spirit
of sportsmanship,

"for the glory of the sport

and the honor of the team."

Let's play some hockey.

State college

Hockey championship,
please welcome your raiders!

MacGyver!

Are they ready or what?

Turk, what are you
doing out of the hospital?

I told 'em I'd crawl here

on my hands and knees

if they didn't spring
me loose for the game.

You ready for this?

Don't worry.

Somebody's always
got battery cables

in case I need a jump-start.

Hey, I've got good news
about the Henderson boy.

Doctor says he's out of a coma.

He's gonna be just fine.

Oh, that's great.

That's terrific.

MacGyver, this is Tony Ellis,

director of player
personnel for team usa.

- MacGyver.
- Ah, the coach

Has told me a lot about you.

Same here. I guess we've both

had our moments
with Derek Kirby.

I, uh, lobbied him a little.

He agreed to give
Derek a second look.

If I like what I
see, I'll recommend

The coaches give
him another shot.

Gentlemen, you care to join me?

We've got a
championship game to play.

Radio announcer:
We're into the final minute

of the third period

here in the third
and deciding game

of the college championship
series at the kerrisdale arena,

and a huge goal by weasel Wilson

for the hawks has given
them a four-three lead.

Their fans can sense victory,

as Kirby is taken in
along the boards hard.

Kirby has undergone a
lot of rough treatment from

these hawk players,
especially in the third period.

They realize his importance

To this raider team. The
raiders try to gain control.

Less than 20 seconds to play.

It could be the last
chance for the raiders.

The hawks would appear
to have a lock on this one.

Brandar bringing it
down the right side.

Brandar to poline, and now
the hawk fans begin to chant.

Only five seconds to play.

Kirby, moving in.

He passes into the front.

Five seconds, and
Johnson ties the score!

Chester Johnson!
Chester Johnson has sent

This game into overtime.

P.A. announcer:
Raider goal scored

by number five, Chester Johnson.

In the last five seconds,

Kirby passing to Chester Johnson

and Johnson, with
deadly accuracy,

Picking his spot.

We are going into overtime
for only the third time

In the history of this
championship series.

The face-off at center ice.

The raiders win the face-off
and move into the hawk zone.

Maybe they can end it quickly.

No, the hawks break it up

And come back.

The hawks moving
into the raider zone now.

A chance for them

To wrap it up in overtime.

Kirby steals the puck
and slams into the board

behind the hawks' bench.

Kirby, thrown to the ice.

Get up! Get up!

Come on, get up!

It's tied at four.

We're in overtime.

Kirby is back on his skates.

He appears a little
shaken on the play.

Kirby taking a
pass from Morrison

as he crosses the blue line.

The pass goes to malachuk.

Malachuk fires it
around the board

as the raiders have
it behind the net,

they're trying to win

This game in overtime.

Kirby calling for it.

Kirby has the puck.

Kirby, back out
to the blue line.

The defenseman comes
on to try and block the shot.

Kirby fakes the shot.
The defenseman

Goes around. Kirby moving in.

He's holding on,
holding onto the puck.

Is he holding on too long?

Kirby makes the pass. Johnson

is moving into the slot.

Johnson has the puck,
block the drive and tee it up.

Johnson with the shot.

He scores!

Yes!

Raider goal

Scored by number
five, Chester Johnson.

Derek Kirby,

a great team effort!

Way to go, coach.

Excuse me, gentlemen.

I have an important
call to make.

To team usa.
