MacGyver (1985–1992): Season 2, Episode 5 - Final Approach - full transcript

Mac is not amused when Peter fixes the Phoenix Foundation flight simulator to crash just before he actually takes a bunch of probation trouble youths camping by airplane, without any budget. Their regular counselor takes reinforcements as an insult and splits; Mac wins some respect by his ingenious bush cooking skills. The pilot who was to return the party a few days later gets a heart-attack, so they crash in the wilderness. The rebellious ruffians (boys and one disputed girl) prove quite a handful to get out of trouble -most of which they keep creating- even with macgyverisms, but a serious grudge between gang leaders and a medical emergency really push Mac's resourcefulness to the limit, but at least now they all pull together...

MacGyver: Flying a
small plane can be fun.

It can also be
kind of frightening.

Now, I've always felt the
best way to confront a fear

of the ocean is
to dive right in.

So it seemed like the smart way

to deal with the fear
of flying light planes

was to take the train or a bu.

Now, it's possible
the carburetor froze up

in this ice storm I
was flying through,

but that didn't explain
why I wasn't getting

A decent throttle response.

Nor was there any indication
as to why the controls felt

Like they were stuck in cemen.

It did not look good
for the home team.

( Buzzer blaring )

Computer: I'm sorry,
but you have crashed.

( Knocking )

Thornton: Hey, Mac!

You got a minute?

( Sighs )

What's the matter, Mac?

Little simulator get to you?

I'd rather fly a t-38 any day.

( Laughs ): Well, I
have a small confession.

I had them rig
it so you'd crash.

Worse possible weather,

total engine malfunction,
frozen controls.

You never had a chance.

It was just a little joke.

Besides, it builds character.

I mean, the worst thing
happened, and you survived.

I remember things
like this, Thornton.

Oh, come on, Mac, relax.

All of this would never
happen in a real plane.

Why do I feel all
this has a point?

I don't...

You want me to fly a plane

just like that, don't you?

No, absolutely not!

I would never
ask you to do that.

You only have to ride in one.

Mac, you remember
that pilot program

Phoenix set up with the
national youth authority?

The one based on our
gang violence research?

Oh, yeah, the street
kids sort of roughing it

out in the wilderness.

Yeah, that's right, as a
part of their probation.

Well, it's finally happening.

Oh, good. How's it going?

Put it out, Ramon.

Look, take a chill
pill, Cavanaugh.

It ain't like i'm smokin'
crack or nothin', all right?

We're in a fire area...

But I guess you
didn't read the sign.

I read it.

The problem is they've
got a social scientist

heading the field test...

A guy with a doctor's
degree but no street savvy.

The powers-that-be insisted.
It was out of my hands.

As I recall, I really
wanted that job.

Yeah, I know. Guess what?

No, are you serious?

When do I leave?

Tomorrow.

But there's, uh, one
other small thing.

Uh, we've really
extended the funds on this,

so there's very
little money involved.

I mean, like, none.

Pete, when has that
ever stopped me?

I'm dying to do
this. You know that.

Great. Listen, I'll even
throw in the old bonus.

No, don't bother.

No, I want to.

Whatever you want,
you just name it.

I mean anything.

The Colorado river kayak race.

You and me shooting the rapids.

That's the bonus I want.

Yeah.

Yeah, I like that.

( Sighs )

I'm not asking
you a second time.

Good.

Stay out of it, Luther.

The man said no smokin'.

( Grunts )

Stop it!

( Shouts )

Come on!

Break it up! Break
it up! Break it up!

( Shouts )

That's it!

You're all going back

to four walls when this is over!

You blew it!

You're going to need eyes

in the back of your head.

Yeah, right.

MacGyver: You sure you
got enough runway, there?

( Chuckles ): Relax, MacGyver.

I've made this landing
dozens of times.

Believe me, you're safer up here

than you're going
to be down there

with those cutthroats.

Boy, they ought to put
'em all away... Permanently.

You know these kids?

I had to fly 'em up here.

You're really walking
into a hornet's nest.

That's it! I can't
eat this zoid food.

Fine. Starve. It's your choice.

Listen, dipstick, this
was not my choice!

This whole thing is
lame! You know what?

Find yourself
another Guinea pig.

( Sniffing )

Girl: Whoa! What's that smell?

It's like chocolate
cake... Or brownies.

Come on, let's check it out.

Ramon: I wonder who's makin' it.

Luther: Who cares?
I just want to eat it.

MacGyver: First impressions
are very important,

and with this group,
I knew it'd be critical,

So I decided to make
a grand entrance...

Through their noses.

Girl: There it is.

Someone's cooking down there.

Brownies, anyone?

I'll take that as a yes.

Who are you?

Girl: Yeah.

Who are you?

Name's MacGyver.
Pete Thornton sent me.

He's "the man" in
the fancy disguise.

Cavanaugh numero dos.

Hasta luego, ese.

We don't buy.

He sent you to bail
me out, didn't he?

Well, I think of it more
as a collaboration.

Hey, you want to run this show?!

Fine! You don't need me.

I'll send the pilot
back for you on Friday.

Hey, Tom, I'm here to help.

Who said I needed any, huh?

Obviously, Thornton thinks
that you can do a better job.

No, I think he thought
we'd work together on it.

Yeah, right.

Keep baking those
brownies, MacGyver.

See how far it gets you.

( Crickets chirping )

You make a nice fire, MacGyver.

Looks like your girlfriend wants

to cruise with Mr. Wonder bread.

How's it going, Gina?

Okay.

Even better since you got here.

She's not my girl.

Not anymore.

So, what's on your mind?

Really want to know?

Mm-hmm.

Wood.

Fire's getting low.

That's okay.

I like a challenge.

That's why I'm in a gang.

Yeah? Is that the only reason?

It's just the way it is.

I was born into it
just like my sister was.

Is your sister still
running with a gang?

Let's just say she's
on a long vacation...

About five years,

Maybe less with good behavior.

Time to die, ese.

All right, can it!

You two want to fight,
you put on gloves,

but it doesn't happen here!

What a tough guy!

What are you going
to do next, spank us?

No, actually, you'd like that,

wouldn't you, Gina?

Why don't you
shut up, you idiot?

Time out!

Oh, it's going to
be a long two days.

And, boy, was it.

Felt like two weeks.

Dealing with these kids
was a little like putting out

a forest fire.

You'd think you
had it under control,

and then another spark
would set it off again.

I can't help feeling that
more time alone with them

might've made a difference.

Hey, Mr. Pilot,
you gonna let me fly

The plane this time, huh?

- Come on...
- Sit back in your seat, punk!

I won't put up with this again.

Just fly the plane, Carl.

Try to just enjoy the scenery
outside the window, huh?

Sit down! Now!

No, my man.

The no smoking and seat
belt signs are turned off, no?

- Come on...
- ( Humming )

Stop it, stop it this second!

Sit back down in that seat
and put your seat belt back on!

( Groans )

( Screaming )

Gina: What's wrong?

What's happening?

Luther: Hey, man,
what's with the pilot?!

Gina: Do something!

Come on!

What's wrong?

Come on!

Are we going to crash?!

Luther: Hey, no, man, no!

Ramon: Hey,
get it up, get it up!

Don't hit it, man!

( Screaming )

Hey, what's happenin', man?

Come on!

Come on, MacGyver, do somethin'!

Hey, man, are we gonna crash?

Come on, man!

Look out for the trees!

Hang on, everybody!

( All exclaim )

Gina: We're on fire!

MacGyver: The radio's burning.

Everybody all right?

You okay?

- Yeah.
- Guys?

Ramon?

Nothing wrong with me, man.

Hands off.

What happened to him?

I don't know.

I think he had a
coronary... A heart attack.

Is he dead?

Yeah.

Let me outta here.

Let me out!

Oh!

Nitroglycerin.

This is your fault, sucker!

Like always.

Oh, you just had to be so damn

cool, Ramon,
freak out the pilot.

You're history, pal.

Hey! You guys wanna
just shut it down?

The pilot had a
serious heart condition.

He shouldn't have been
flying in the first place.

That doesn't excuse the
fact of what went down.

Now he put us here

And he's gonna pay the price...

Like he should've
done a long time ago.

Somebody wanna fill me in?

Nothing to fill in.

The man's got a problem.

We've all got problems.

That's life, whitebread.

So what now?

How are we gonna
get outta here, man?

Well, first we're going to try
and find some food and shelter.

And then hope a search
party starts looking for us.

That ain't good enough, man.

I got places to be.

Yeah, see, MacGyver?

It ain't safe for him out here.

He needs his gang.

I lead my gang... because
I earned their respect...

The hard way.

Doggone it! Guys!

Why don't you save
your energy, huh?

Look, it's going to get
cold out here tonight,

Real cold.

What do you say we pitch a tent?

Parachute into a tent.

Pretty slick,
MacGyver. I like it.

Oh, Gina, please
spare us your sap.

He hasn't saved us yet.

I don't see you coming up
with any ideas, scum wad.

Shut up!

( Laughter )

They used to be a thing.

Ain't love blind, man?

Not if you give it
a chance... man.

Hey, Luther.

What do you say
we earn our dinner?

Have you ever had
fresh mountain trout

With wild mushrooms
and pine nuts?

Outrageous.

We both know nothing's
going to happen, Gina,

so why don't we cut the act?

Whoa, come here.

Wanna level with me?

All this has to do with
someone else, doesn't it?

Gina: He made a choice.

Tommy's gang won, and I lost.

He couldn't have both.

Why not?

It just doesn't work

that way, MacGyver.

We're enemies.

I don't wanna talk
about it anymore.

Okay.

Wanna fill me in

On what's goin' down
between Ramon and Luther?

Find someone else
to be your squeak.

I'm sick and
tired of bein' used.

Hey!

Do you really think
that's what I'm doing?

Really?

Ramon wasted Luther's
little brother about a year ago.

The kid was all he had

unless you wanna
count his drunk mother.

It messed him up pretty bad.

Why didn't Ramon go to jail?

'Cause there weren't
any eyewitnesses, bud.

Don't you get it?

But everybody knows he did it.

How do you think he got
to become El pachuco,

Leader of his gang, huh?

Beats the brownies, man.

Look, who cares about food?

What's this guy doin' to
get us rescued? Nothin'!

And what're you doin', Tommy?

Let's hear some of your ideas.

Take it easy, Gina.

Hey, don't ever
stand up for me, okay!

I don't need it,
and I don't want it!

You got that?

You okay?

Yeah, man, never felt better.

Glad to hear it.

( Rattling )

Nobody move!

( Rattling )

( Quietly ): Freeze, Luther.

Don't move a muscle.

Everyone stay frozen.

I'll be right back.

What the hell you doin', man?

Where're you goin'?

What the hell are
you doin', man?

Snake crawled in for warmth.

That's why it's
going to crawl out.

( Loud thud )

Well, that takes
care of finding lunch.

Ooh.

Come on, Tommy, time to wake up.

All right, folks. I got
a choice to make.

Either I trust you all
and I go look for him,

Or I stay here.

I want your word that nothing
will happen while I'm gone.

Hey, don't be
lookin' at me, man.

Look at him.

I'm lookin' at both of ya.

All right. Nothing'll happen.

You gonna believe
what he tells ya?

That's right.

Tommy?

( Snarling )

MacGyver!

( Snarling )

( Snarling )

( Snarling )

All right, hold still.

She's just protecting her food.

Don't look her in the eye.

( Snarling )

there's a time to
be Daniel Boone

and a time to be a plumber.

This one called for the latte.

I knew that mountain lion

Wouldn't leave its meal
behind for just any old thing...

Except maybe a cold shower.

( Screeching )

You bet.

Hey, listen, I'm
sorry about that.

I know you coulda
handled that on your own,

but I wanted to test
a theory and, uh...

No hard feelings?

No.

All right, let's go.

You all right?

Why'd you come out here, Tommy?

I want the truth.

Ready for this?

I was gonna get
us all rescued...

Be a big hero.

I'm an idiot sometimes.

No, that took guts.

I even think

Gina'd appreciate that.

Maybe once... Before
she joined her gang.

Before you joined yours.

The gang was all that I had.

Better than gettin'
beat up by the old man.

It's too bad you let the
gangs get in your way.

Where is he?

I don't know.

I wouldn't do it, Luther.

Don't be gettin'
into this, girl.

It ain't your business.

Where'd you find him?

Having lunch with
a mountain lion.

It's a long story.

Where's Luther and Ramon?

They're around somewhere.

Yeah? How long they been gone?

A while.

What's the matter, Gina?

Tell me.

Luther's goin' after him.

Time to make it even, ese.

Don't do it, Luther!

He killed my brother!

What do you think'll
happen to you?

I don't care, man.

You do care!

You're too smart not to.

Where you feel it?

My chest.

For how long?

Since the crash.

I warned you to
stay out of this.

Hey, hey, she didn't
tell him nothin', Luther.

MacGyver figured
it out on his own.

Look, you don't wanna
be jivin' me, sucker.

I'm not.

I don't need nobody's help, man.

Humor me, okay?

( Sighs )

What's his problem?

He's got all the symptoms
of internal injuries,

and if that's true...

What?

We don't have time to
wait for a search party.

Listen, underneath
the dash in the plane,

there's a whole
bunch of rubber tubing.

It's connected to the
oil pressure Gauge.

Bring me a couple
of two-foot lengths.

And grab the radio headset, too.

Okay.

I really hope he's
gonna be okay.

Yeah.

Thanks.

For what?

You know... Luther.

It was no strain.

MacGyver told me
the reason you left

was to get us all saved.

MacGyver says a lot of stuff.

Yeah, I know, but I
think this one was true.

Uh, Gina?

Look, maybe we could
try to be friends again.

Yeah, I'd like that.

Did you kill Luther's brother?

Maybe I did. Maybe I didn't.

I think you didn't.

What's all this jazz for?

I'm gonna make a little
homemade stethoscope.

It'll help pinpoint the damage.

Thornton: I don't like it.

They were due back
yesterday afternoon.

This just isn't like Mac.

We'll start with a broad
sweep of the northwest sector

and then go from there.

This is control center
to chopper unit 44.

His bowel sounds
are almost gone.

I think he's got a
punctured spleen.

What do you think?

I think Ramon's going to die

if we don't get him
to a hospital fast.

Justice!

Not in my book.

We're going to
get him out of here.

How?

In that.

What?

You've gotta be kidding.

We're gonna need
a hollowed out log

About three foot long
and smooth on the bottom.

The lighter the load the better.

And hopefully a head wind to
counteract the front-end weight.

What're you sayin', MacGyver?

We're gonna build
ourselves a front ski

where that tire used to be.

Sorta like a snow plane.

Can't wait to see how
you're gonna make snow.

We're not.

We're gonna make mud.

But it's going to take

all of us to pull this one off.

Yeah? Well, you
can count me out.

Uh-huh.

Listen, why don't
you start clearin'

all the brush and rocks.

Got it.

Gina, find me some
branches about six-foot long

and as straight as possible.

Okay.

( Distant hammering )

How are these?

Perfect.

I got the field as
clean as I could get it.

Good job.

Can I borrow your earrings?

Earrings, huh?

Yeah.

Are you building one of those
things that surveyors use?

It's called a theodolite.

A what?

It's a sighting tool.

I have a friend
that works in the city

- Uses something like this.
- You know how to work one?

Yeah, I could figure it out.

This is primitive, though.

It's caveman time.

More like George
Washington's time.

Okay, look, here's my compass.

Think you can give me 300 yards
due west, straight as an arrow?

Uh, sure, if you
give me some help.

All right, here's
your first lesson.

The average walking
pace is about one yard.

Oh, so then, uh, 300
paces and we got it?

You got it.

You heard the man...

300 paces across the Meadow.

Hurry up.

I'll sight ya up. Go.

Aye, aye, captain.

Relax.

One, two, three,

four, five, six,

Seven, eight,
nine, ten, 11, 12...

What's taking the rescue
party so long, man?

I'm getting bored
laying around here.

We can't wait
for a rescue party.

How do you feel about
another plane ride?

What do I got to lose?

You know, you're a
fool trying to save him.

You know, you think you got
everybody pegged, don't ya?

Well, maybe you don't.

I went to school with a
kid named Andy jarrett...

Hey, I don't wanna hear this!

Just shut up and listen!

He was a junior
safecracker, real smart.

Kept bragging how he
could break into anything

if he really wanted to.

Well, things started
disappearing from lockers.

Everybody knew it was Andy,
but nobody could prove it.

Then one day I opened up
mine and my knife is gone.

I knew who did it.

So I waited until after
school, and I busted his nose.

Yeah? But you got
your knife back, right?

That's right.

When I got home, it
was sitting on my desk

right where I left it.

You sure you got your
facts straight, Luther?

Think about it.

You're gonna die.

I wanna know what
went down that night,

why you killed him.

I didn't do it.

I came around the alley

And I saw your brother
buying crack from some junkie.

The junkie took his money
and planted the steel.

And then he saw me and flew.

He left your brother
there in the street.

You're lying, man.

No, man.

I lied then.

My friend Lorenzo was with me.

He backed me up.

That's... that's how I
became a pachuco, man.

How I got my respect.

It was my only chance.

No.

If you get outta here,

You find Lorenzo
and you ask him.

You're lying.

Believe it, man.

Pilot ( Over radio ):
I'm over the airstrip.

Looks like they're long gone.

Let's retrace their
original flight plan.

Affirmative.

I know I am responsible
for the program.

We're doing everything
we can to locate them.

Look, my best
friend is out there.

Get the forest
service on the line.

See what they've come up with.

You got your 300
yards, MacGyver.

Okay, now we dig.

We need a foot-deep trough

straight down that
line you just surveyed.

You got it.

Looks like you're gonna
be slinging some mud.

Great.

Luther: I wanna know
what went down that night,

why you killed him.

Ramon: I didn't do it.

Luther: You're lying, man.

Ramon: I lied then.

My friend Lorenzo was with me.

He backed me up.

Ramon: That's how I
became a pachuco, man.

Luther: No.

Ramon: It was my only chance.

Luther: You're lying.

Ramon: Believe
it, man. Believe it.

( Grunts )

The remainder of their flight
plan is over civilization, sir.

That means they went down
way off course, doesn't it?

There's a thousand square miles

Of rough wilderness out there.

I'm sorry, it's
not very hopeful.

You don't know MacGyver.

( Grunting )

All right, start
letting it down.

MacGyver: All right, easy.

Keep it coming.

Okay, now hold it.

Now forward.

A little more.

Pivot. Pivot!

Put it down.

Gina: Down?

Yeah.

( Panting )

It's gonna work, MacGyver.

( Panting )

It's got to.

Gina: You're gonna
be okay, Ramon.

Thank you.

I'll send the search plane back

the minute we land, all right?

Take it easy, MacGyver.

I'll do my best.

I've been a real...

You're gonna be
just fine, Ramon.

If we don't crash.

- Oh...
- Come on.

- Go.
- Please...

Come on.

( Cheering )

( Sighs )

You did it, man.

Primo.

Now all I gotta do
is find an airport,

Get them to lay down
some foam... and land.

That's all.

If you can do what you just did,

you could land this
thing on the moon.

Yo!

How was your flight?

Aw, I've been on worse.

Hey, how is he?

Ramon's gonna make it.

Thornton: Looks to me
like they're all gonna make it.

Nice going, Mac.

No, Pete, I had
help on this one.

Thornton: So what's the secret?

I guess you could say

They found something
worth going for.
